VISUAL EVENTS

The summer season’s exhibition programme at VISUAL explores ways in which the visual arts can use the language of spectacle and theatrical staging to affect feeling. The season considers the craft of creating art for an audience, and how art forms can cross each other’s boundaries in order to reach audiences in new and expanded ways. VISUAL presents a major survey of new film works by American artist Daria Martin; a new performance piece by visual artist Yvonne McGuiness working with Carlow Youth Theatre; work from an early pioneer of stage craft, Bauhaus designer and visual artist Oskar Schlemmer; an engagement space for costume design and dress up inspired by Schlemmer’s Triadic Ballet; and Carlow’s annual open submission in collaboration with Carlow Arts Festival, ART WORKS – which also gives a nod to the season’s theme.

VISUAL ART

F Main Gallery 7th June – 3rd September Image: A Hunger Artist, production still HD film / 15 minutes / 2017 Photograph: Thierry Bal, courtesy the artist and Maureen Paley, London A Hunger Artist is a co commission by VISUAL Carlow, Site Gallery Shefield, Schering Stiftung Berlin. It has been supported by the Welcome Trust, the Arts Council England, St John’s College, and the Ruskin School of Art, Oxford University, where Daria Martin is a Professor. The artist is represented by Maureen Paley, London.

Daria Martin A Hunger Artist & other new works 2012–2017 VISUAL is delighted to present the world premiere of Daria Martin’s new work A Hunger Artist (HD Film). Inspired by Franz Kafka’s short story ‘A Hunger Artist’ (1922): a fasting artist performs in a cage for an admiring public but, perpetually underestimated, he doesn’t live up to his potential until he falls out of fashion and then, left to his own devices without audience or manager, he dies. A robust panther takes up the Artist’s place in a vacant cage…. This major survey show also includes Martin’s latest trilogy of 16mm films, Theatre of the Tender (2016); At The Threshold (2015); and Sensorium Tests (2012). Inspired by the artist’s research into a heightened form of physical sensitivity called mirror touch synaesthesia, these latest works explore the dynamics of actor – spectator, and the transfer of emotion and feeling between people. Daria Martin (born 1973) is an American artist and filmmaker based in London since 2002 and working primarily in 16mm film. Her work has been exhibited at the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, The New Museum, New York, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, and the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art. This exhibition was made possible with the support of the Carlow County Council Arts Office.

Commissioned by VISUAL in response to the season’s themes, the work explores how the languages of visual arts, theatre and spectacle can combine to communicate with and affect both participants and audiences. Carlow on Camera – Irish Film Institute Carlow on Camera presents an exciting, programme of films about Carlow which are preserved in the IFI Irish Film Archive. Dating from the 1930s to the present day the programme creates a vibrant social history of the county and a colourful kaleidoscope of years gone by. It includes Activities of www, made by PP Fr Jackie Moran (1935 – ’58); Radharc’s documentary about Pattern Day in St Mullins (1966); Gael Linn’s Amharc Éireann newsreels of the county (1960s); Journeys down the Barrow (1960s) and the elegiac What Remains (2013) co-directed by Carlow filmmaker Tadhg O’ Sullivan and Pat Collins. The programme highlight will be the Irish modern-day première of the recently re-discovered silent boarding-school drama Some Say Chance, directed by Carlovian Michael Farrell in 1935 and accompanied by internationally renowned cellist Kate Ellis.

Roger Gregg & Crazy Dog Audio Theatre Co. present

The Rapture of Hugo Ball A dark comedy by Creative Explorations staged as a radio show with live music and sound effects. A satire tracing a performance-artist’s unsuccessful struggle to gain recognition and acclaim in an independent world, the protagonist finds himself thwarted at every turn by an arts culture rife with the rivalry of competing egos, choked by academic jargon and administered by indifferent bureaucratic gatekeepers. Though set in the realm of performance art, the tale equally applies to all the creative arts wherein the individual artist has to struggle to establish a viable career.

World Premiere Mend and Make Do presents

Between Your Love and Mine – A Requiem Written by Leonard Cohen and arranged for theatre by John MacKenna. Last summer, writer John MacKenna began work on a requiem for theatre, in memory of young friends and in honour of those who mourn them. The requiem was inspired, in particular, by Leonard’s hope-filled lines: Behold the gates of mercy, in arbitrary space, and none of us deserving the cruelty or the grace, o solitude of longing where love has been confined, come healing of the body, come healing of the mind. In late October 2016, just two weeks before his death, the singer approved the final draft of Between Your Love and Mine which will be premiered at VISUAL Carlow. Musical director for the requiem is Aisling Carter and it features the voices of Eric Butler, Katie Jacques and Shane Sullivan. The band features Aisling Carter on keyboard, Lucy Deegan on cello and Annie-Rose Deegan on violin. Spoken word is by Angela Keogh and John MacKenna, who also directs the requiem. Extra date added due to popular demand. Thursday night performance will be attended by President Michael D Higgins.

Mary Coughlan and her Musicians A celebration of Mary’s 30 plus years in the music business.

VISUAL is delighted to be hosting the 13th Carlow African Film Festival during this summer season.

Mary Coughlan’s music career has been a roller coaster, one hell of a ride, and this Live & Kicking concert will reflect that, featuring all the songs that are close to Mary’s heart and life.

CAFF provides an annual platform to celebrate the beauty and diversity of Africa through film, honour excellence in African Film making and promote cultural integration in Ireland.

Often described as the greatest female vocalist and interpreter of songs that Ireland has ever produced. Mary Coughlan proudly stands alongside, the iconic giants of jazz on both sides of the Atlantic, Billie Holiday and Edith Piaf. Mary Coughlan is the only singer these shores have produced to rival the greatest of European cabaret and American jazz club blues because of one thing: her unique voice.

This very special festival will feature great movies, storytelling and much, much more.

It’s a treasure trove of wonders where old books flock together and their stories hop from the pages. Peter and John work at the new arrivals desk. Great heaps of books have to be sorted and categorized and sometimes sent to the dreaded shredder. The two friends do their very best to make sure every book gets a new life and that none of the magic is lost. Step inside this unusual shop, swap a book and and maybe even take a little of the magic home with you. Please bring a gently used book to swap! Duration 40 min

Gearóid Farrelly Home Truths Comedian Gearóid Farrelly takes his brand of chatty stand-up comedy on the road this autumn.

The world premiere of The Mental, the third play in John MacKenna’s Barrow Trilogy – following Corner Boys and Lucinda Sly is set in St Joseph’s psychiatric hospital in 1990, it’s the story of John Salter, a man who has been in psychiatric care for forty years for “attempting to do a good deed.” But times are changing and patients are moving into community houses – something John Salter is resisting. “If I go, who’ll get the crows up in the morning and who’ll get them into their nests at night?” he asks. The Mental is a warm and gentle story of one man’s journey through a life that might have followed a different path. Directed by Angela Keogh.
