I heard a recent analogy comparing global warming to cigarette smoking. For fifty years, scientists knew about the toxicity and health hazards of smoking cigarettes. However, they were able to convince the public that they weren’t really that bad in order to make a sale. Our climate situation is dire; yet certain politicians are still convincing people that global warming is a hoax and that it isn’t necessary for us to make drastic changes. Greenland’s ice loss doubled between 1996 and 2005, and the rate of change is 147 billion metric tons per year. In 2012 the Arctic summer sea ice shrank to the lowest extent on record. Carbon dioxide levels are at their highest in 650,000 years. And despite what you may think after the past year’s eastern winter weather patterns, the earth’s temperature is on its way up. Nine of the 10 warmest years on record have occurred since 2000, with 2014 the warmest on record. If you look at the numbers it’s obvious that there is a major change in our climate, but so many people are still holding back from making a change. One of the reasons we may be so willing to block out global warming is that accepting the numbers means accepting one gigantic, overwhelming problem. Many people feel that making a small change won’t make an impact – and they’d be right. One person making the decision to recycle or use eco-friendly cleaning products won’t make an impact. Much like one person deciding to give up smoking won’t change lung cancer rates. We need to change our collective thinking. One person won’t make a difference on their own; we need to believe that we’re not on our own and know that we aren’t the only ones making an effort to save our environment. Much like you don’t want to be the one person left smoking when everyone else has healthy lungs, you don’t want to be the one person left doing nothing to save our environment when everyone else is doing their part to make a change. While one person on his own can’t make a change, change is impossible without that one person making a change. We need to believe that change starts with the individual and that if enough individuals make a change we will see a positive impact on our climate.

BEHIND THE SCENES The slight actor bounced into the Mari Vanna restaurant looking somewhat edgy, as do most of the characters she’s played over the years. Taryn Manning’s blonde hair was tucked under a baseball cap, and she wore leggings, a tee, high-top sneakers and no makeup. The edge is where the similarities end. Much unlike her character Tiffany “Pennsatucky” Doggett on Orange is the New Black, Manning is full of energy and has an infectious smile. The Mari Vanna is the ideal location for Viva’s Earth issue cover shoot. The restaurant could double for a Russian country house, complete with a grove of olive trees on the patio and interior design details that have paid attention to every detail, including old photos of Soviet cosmonauts. Manning’s glam team goes into overdrive on this hot, sunny Los Angeles day, readying the star for the photo shoot, while wardrobe is approved or rejected. “I love this orange dress,” exclaims Manning of what would become the cover choice. “It’s a really nice cut and fits me so well. Yes, I do like the colour orange,” says Manning. It really is the new black.

FROM TOP LEFT CLOCKWISE: MANNING GETS A SKATER LESSON; TEA TIME TOUCH-UPS; CENTRAL ROAST TREATS WERE ON HAND TO KEEP EVERYONE ENERGIZED THROUGHOUT THE LONG SHOOT.

“It’s a balance of work and social life. It’s good to exercise and have time with friends and family, but also to be a hard worker. I like to keep the flow going. Also love is a big part of stability in life; if you don’t have love you can’t implement a sense of steadiness or grounding in your everyday life. Solitude, reading, being alone – learning how to be alone and loving yourself – are also essential to leading a balanced life.”

VIVA AMBASSADOR EMMA NEEDLEMAN STONE

How long have you read Viva? I’ve been a faithful reader since the spring of 2013. What's your favourite section in Viva? My favourite section is the health and beauty section because I’m passionate about making my own natural beauty products. What's your favourite natural product? I have two: beef tallow as an ingredient in skincare products, and Seventh Generation Geranium Blossoms and Vanilla Laundry Detergent. Do you have any healthy tips to share? My best stay healthy tip is to include probiotics in your diet, either through a supplement or fermented foods like kombucha, kefir, sauerkraut and kimchi. I eat these daily and increase the dose when I am feeling illness brewing. I have successfully staved off colds and flu for the last two winters. What is something that you do to help save the environment? I don’t use any chemicals in my house that are harmful to the environment. I make my own skincare products, only use natural Castile soaps for body care, and use vinegar and baking soda for cleaning. I also use natural sulphate-free and biodegradable laundry detergent. HELP FOR YOUR HAIR

I panicked...

My hair was thinning Maya was shocked by the change in the appearance of her hair. Fullness and volume were replaced by thinness and lifeless hair. ‘‘I had to do something about it’’ Model image

T

he hair I found in my brush, in the shower and on my cardigan was unfamiliar to me. I didn’t even recognize my own hair. How could this happen?”

Had to do something “I found out my mother experienced the same problems. When she was quite young, her hair changed. It lost the appearance of fullness and vibrancy. It was never the same. She felt helpless and resigned to her fate. Much of my personality is in my hair, and I did not want to have the same problem. I

had heard about the importance of nutrition for healthy hair, so I decided to focus on the inside rather than on the outside.”

My hair feels fuller “I started to take Hair Volume to improve the health of my hair. I have now used Hair Volume for 2 months and I am really satisfied with the product. My hair feels full and healthy and even my nails feel stronger. This is proof to me that proper nutrition on the inside helps you look your best on the outside. I highly recommend it.” Maya N., Sweden

Test Yourself Yes No 1. Do you find more hair in the shower drain ?

Did you know? ▷ Copper helps support melanin production, the pigment that preserves the natural colour of your hair. ▷ Procyanidin B2 extracted from apples has been shown to be a hair growth promoting factor.

2. Does your hair look dull and fragile ? 3. Does your hair break easily ? 4. Do you notice more grey hairs ? 5. Do you see more hair in your brush ? If you answered “YES” to 2 or more questions, you may benefit from the Hair Volume supplement.

Your Hair Tablet Hair VolumeTM is a Swedish hair tablet that nourishes your hair from the inside to make it healthy and beautiful. Unlike other tablets on the market, it contains procyanidin B2, in addition to copper and other important hair, nail and skin nutrients. HEALTHY SKIN HIT LIST Follow these six must-have steps for the beautiful, glowing skin: 1. Eat your fruits and veggies; their antioxidants are vital to preventing free radical damage. 2. Don’t smoke. It produces free radicals that age and dry the skin out. 3. Exercise boosts circulation that brings oxygen to your cells and gives your skin a healthy glow. 4. Avoid extreme temperatures. Hot and cold extremes can rupture small capillaries under the skin. 5. Exfoliate to remove dead, dull skin. 6. Get your beauty sleep. Toxins are released when we slumber and tissue is renewed. HEALTHY TREAT TO TRY:

Gabriel Organics Seaweed Calming Cleanser The calming effects of seaweed and papaya provide a gentle cleanse and light exfoliation, while maintaining your skin’s natural moisture and pH balance. (180mL, $22.50) 32

NATURE’S SUN PROTECTORS Protecting sensitive skin from burning is always a challenge – especially if you love being outdoors and want to get some of the sun’s vitamin D benefits. Start your layers of protection from the inside by eating protecting foods. Carotenoids protect plants and animals from excess sunshine and help molecules reflect UV rays. Eating them can decrease your risk of a burn. Carotenoids are found in foods like eggs, salmon, trout, dark green leafy vegetables, and yellow and orange fruit and veggies like carrots and peppers. DO-IT-YOURSELF SUNSCREEN:

Combining Shea butter, avocado, jojoba, SAM-e and castor oil, marigold, St. John’s wort and walnut husk can make an all-natural sunscreen. EARTH ISSUE FALL 2014 2015 / VIVAMAGONLINE.COM

FINDING BALANCE WITH THE SUN We yearn for our skin to have a sun-kissed glow, but are warned that the sun is harmful, ages us and can even cause cancer. While we need to exercise caution, there are so many health benefits – mentally and physically – that the sun provides. Vitamin D supports the immune system and bone health. The sun also kills bad bacteria, helps fight depression and can give your overall health a boost. To get the benefits while reducing the negative side effects of the sun follow these simple rules: • Protect your skin with a broad-spectrum, natural sunscreen made without harsh toxic chemicals such as oxybenzone, which can penetrate into the skin.

• Limit sun exposure during peek hours (10am to 4pm) and aim to keep overall, direct sun exposure to no more an hour a day. • Darker complexions can handle more time in the sun since they have more melatonin in their skin, which is our body’s natural sun block. TRY: Aubrey Organics Natural Sun Green Tea Sunscreen SPF

30+ is made with the powerful antioxidant organic matcha green tea to help prevent free radical damage and aging of the skin. It also has moisturizing oils of jojoba and sunflower. BEAUTY TERMINOLOGY BEESWAX Made from the honeycomb of bees, beeswax is an amazing natural moisturizer. It locks in moisture and protects your skin from damaging environmental factors by creating a long-lasting protective coating against the elements. In addition to being a natural moisturizer, beeswax is a powerful anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, anti-allergenic and a germicidal antioxidant.

HEMP SEED OIL Extracted from the hemp plant, this seed oil is high in healthy omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. It’s also rich in vitamins A and E. It is often used as an ingredient in soaps, body oils, creams and other personal care products to give them a natural moisture boost. Because of its moisturizing benefits, hemp oil can also be rubbed directly on the body to treat cracked, dry skin. If you use skin care products containing hemp seed oil on a regular basis it has been proven to have great anti-aging benefits. Hemp seed oil can also help prevent acne, psoriasis and eczema.

BURDOCK ROOT EXTRACT Burdock root extract is a hardy perennial that is native to Europe. The plant has large leaves and purple flowers and its root is used for both cosmetic and medicinal purposes, including the promotion of healthy hair. Burdock root extract contains mucilage, tannins, inulin, vitamin A and essential fatty acids to help nourish and smooth hair follicles. It also provides nourishment to the scalp and can help prevent hair loss. Burdock root extract can help with dandruff, itchy scalp and redness.

JOJOBA OIL Also known as Simmondsia Chinensis, jojoba oil is known for its power to help skin cells reserve and retain their moisture. It’s extremely gentle and can be used on all skin types. Jojoba oil effectively penetrates the skin and lips to improve flexibility and helps to rebalance the skin and enriches the skin with sebum oil, which is almost identical to the sebum oil produced by human skin.

THE GREEN EFFECT No more paving paradise to put up a parking lot. It’s time to bring back our green space. A recent study from the University of Exeter has proven that living in an urban area with very little green space increases anxiety and depression rates. The study followed 12,000 people for over 18 years. Research found that when people moved to greener urban areas they showed less signs of depression and their life satisfaction was higher. The positive effects on mental health were immediate. When they moved to an area dominated by high rises, their life satisfaction diminished.

H E ALTH NEWS WHAT ARE THE BEST DOWNTOWNS IN AMERICA?

CARING COMPANY NBTY, Inc., a leader in vitamins and nutritional supplements, has announced the formation of a Scientific Advisory Council. The Council is comprised of some of the most respected medical and nutrition experts in the field and will provide guidance to the company as it looks to become the most recognized global leader in wellness products. “Maintaining our high-quality standards, whether we are talking about the ingredients, the manufacturing processes or the scientific data that supports each of our products, is of the utmost importance to us,” said Dr. Susan Hazels Mitmesser, Director of Nutrition Research at NBTY.

GREEN BABIES ARE BIGGER BABIES Living near green space breeds bigger babies. A 2014 study published in Occupational and Environmental Medicine looked at almost 40,000 births. The study found that an increase of surrounding greenery near the home was associated with a significant increase in birth weight. This is especially significant as it lowers the risk of having a low birth weight baby.

The results may surprise you. Livability.com has named the top 10 best downtowns in the United States. They looked for areas with new construction, vibrant arts scenes and walkable streets. The editors also took affordability into account, which may have knocked cities like New York and Chicago out of the running. Here’s a list at their top 10 Best Downtowns for 2015 1. Q: DO MOMS AND DADS NEED THE MMR VACCINE? A: I’ve been hearing the word “nervous” a lot lately. It keeps falling from the mouths of my families in clinic and landing on the floor with a silent thud. We have a right to be nervous about the measles. The measles is one of the most infectious diseases on the planet. In the last year, 400 people worldwide have died from complications resulting from the measles and the number of infected people in North America is climbing. Although California has received a lot of recent attention, the measles are spreading out of the sunshine state and into other U.S. states, Canada and Mexico. The threat of someone bringing the disease home is leaving many families fearful. The good news, of course, is that measles is a vaccine-preventable disease. Two doses of the vaccine shield us from measles with remarkable effectiveness. The vaccine is safe and readily available. And best of all? Getting the vaccine gives us confidence that we have done the best we can to protect our kids and ourselves. So, let’s change nervous to protected. Prepared. Ready. For this outbreak and outbreaks to come. Let’s make sure that the whole family has a shield of protection, including moms and dads. Here’s how to determine if you need to get the MMR vaccine as an adult: • All adults born after 1957 should be vaccinated against measles. • You should get the MMR if you have no written record of being vaccinated with at least one dose of the vaccine. Note: A vague memory of getting vaccinated, a conversation with your mom about getting vaccinated as a kid, or assuming you are vaccinated since you went to public school does not constitute as a written record. • If you are not sure if you have received the MMR in the past, you may ask your doctor for a blood test to confirm protection. Or, you may choose to get another vaccine, as there is no harm in receiving a potentially “extra” dose. • A second dose of the MMR vaccine (given 28 days after the first dose) is recommended for adults who may be at increased risk of contracting disease. Specifically, those who work in healthcare, are in secondary education, or travel internationally should have a second dose. • If you are currently pregnant or will be pregnant in the next four weeks you cannot get the vaccine. Adults with certain medical conditions, who are taking certain medications, or who are allergic to a component of the vaccine cannot get vaccinated. Ask your doc for more details. VM

s the days get longer and the birds start chirping, allergy sufferers brace themselves. However, there are simple natural remedies that can be very effective for allergy relief. Bear in mind that different people seem to benefit from different remedies, so try more than one natural solution to see which works best for you. Natural treatments are used to support and improve adrenal function, the immune system and digestion. For seasonal allergy sufferers, beginning natural therapies one to two months before the season starts can help reduce the severity of symptoms.

4. Use a Neti Pot for cleansing the sinuses. A little douse of salt-

NUTRITION MATTERS Good health can help ease allergy symptoms, and good health starts with nutrition. Diet plays an important role in your overall health, and allergies are no exception. A recent study from Greece found that following the Mediterranean diet, rich in fruits and vegetables, had a protective effect for children with asthma and allergies. A German study, published in Allergy, found that participants who ate foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids were less likely to suffer allergy symptoms than those who didn’t regularly eat these foods. Omega-3s help fight inflammation and can be found in cold-water fish, walnuts and flaxseed oil, as well as grass-fed meat and eggs. Spices can also be helpful additions to your diet. To help keep airways clear when pollen counts are high, add a dash of horseradish, chili peppers or hot mustard to your food for temporary congestion relief. Increase your consumption of onions, which are high in quercetin, a bioflavonoid, which can help minimize the occurrence of watery or itchy eyes, asthma and hay fever.

Quercetin Quercetin helps stabilize mast cells and prevents them from releasing histamine. It is also a natural antioxidant. Quercetin is found naturally in onions, apples, parsley, tea, tomatoes, broccoli, lettuce and wine. Dose: 500 to 1,000 mg 2 or 3 times per day.

LIFESTYLE REMEDIES Small lifestyle changes can go a long way towards keeping allergy symptoms under control. Here are five easy changes you can make to reduce your seasonal allergy attacks: 1. Avoid using window fans because they can pull pollen indoors. 2. Drive with windows closed to avoid allergens. 3. Limit outdoor time when ragweed pollen counts are highest.

water can rinse away those prickly pollen grains and help treat allergies and other forms of sinus congestion. 5. Consider buying a HEPA air filter, which removes particles in the air by forcing them through screens containing microscopic pores. SUPPLEMENTS THAT CAN HELP Supplements are a natural alternative to medicine and can help reduce the impact allergies have on your life. Here are six to try:

Stinging Nettle Stinging nettle (Urtica dioica) is known to act as a natural antihistamine. It inhibits the body’s ability to produce histamine. Dose: 1 to 2 capsules every 2 to 4 hours as needed. Butterbur Butterbur (Petasites hybridus) is derived from a common weed in Europe. It is another alternative to antihistamines. A Swiss study, published in the British Journal of Medicine, found that butterbur was as effective as the drug cetirizine, the active ingredient in Reactine, without the common sedative side effects. A word of caution however, butterbur is in the same family as ragweed, so it could worsen allergy symptoms in some cases. Dose: 1 tablet of butterbur extract (containing 8 mg of petasin) 4 times a day. Probiotics Probiotics can influence the immune system and potentially correct the root cause of allergic reactions. They build up the body’s levels of a substance called secretory IgA, an immune system EARTH ISSUE 2015 / VIVAMAGONLINE.COM

antibody in your lungs and gut whose primary job is to coat bacteria or other potentially bad proteins or substances like bacteria, viruses, food or environmental allergens to prevent them from adhering to the epithelial cells that line the gut and airways. Dose: 10 to 15 billion CFUs per capsule daily. Vitamin C with bioflavonoids Vitamin C prevents the formation of histamine in the body. Allergens can cause certain cells in the body to produce histamine, which are responsible for common seasonal complaints like tearing, excess mucus and a runny nose. Bioflavinoids enhance the activity of vitamin C in the body and help stabilize mast cells, which secrete the histamine linked to allergic reactions. Dose: Depending on bowel tolerance, one can easily take 1,000 to 3,000 mg per day.

New Roots Quercetin A natural anti-inflammatory and antihistamine, quercetin helps relieve seasonal allergies and asthma. (90 capsules, $43)

Webber Naturals Probiotic 30 Billion Contains eight strains of friendly bacteria to support healthy intestinal flora and boost immune function. (30 capsules, $17.99)

Salus Nettle Juice Nettle Juice is a nutritive tonic and helps to relieve seasonal allergy symptoms. It contains quercetin, a powerful antioxidant that helps to stabilize mast cells and prevents them from releasing histamine. It’s also a diuretic. (200mL, $16.79)

Now Omega-3 This highly researched 18:12 ratio of EPA/DHA is a great way to maintain and support cardiovascular health while naturally providing allergy relief. It’s a sustainable mixed fish source that has been tested for impurities and toxins. (200 capsules, $15.99)

Sisu Ester-C Supreme Supports a healthy immune system and improves white blood cell function. It also helps reduce histamine release in the body, thereby naturally alleviating allergy symptoms. Ester-C is enhanced with quercetin and bioflavonoids for additional allergy relief. (120 capsules, $37.99)

Purica Grape Seed This powerful antioxidant helps eliminate free radicals and supports healthy collagen. It can be helpful in reducing allergy symptoms, particularly when taken in conjunction with vitamin C. (120 capsules, $19.95)

CLEAN GREEN Using the wrong cleaning products can make your allergy symptoms worse. Avoid anything with strong noxious odours, such as ammonia, and products that produce particulates, including air fresheners and ozone generators. Aerosol spray cleaners can also trigger allergy symptoms, and one study found that weekly use of cleaning sprays was linked to increases in rates of asthma, asthma-medication use and wheezing. More frequent use of these cleaners was associated with greater risk of worsening symptoms. A great option for allergy prevention is to use eco-friendly cleaning products (see page 86) and to vacuum with cyclonic vacuums or vacuums with HEPA filters. Also, try using a mop that will pick up and retain dust rather than stirring it into the air. Wash bedding (including mattress pads) and kids' stuffed animals regularly in hot water to keep allergen accumulation low. VM

WHAT IS AN ALLERGY?

An allergy is an overaggressive immune response that is triggered by eating certain foods, touching certain substances, or inhaling an irritant like pollen, dust or animal dander. Allergies to pollen, spores, mold and dust (also called hay fever or allergic rhinitis) affect the respiratory system and are usually the most difficult to control.

EPA/DHA Fish Oils Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), the components of omega-3, are natural anti-inflammatories. A recent German study found that a high content of omega-3 fatty acids in the diet was associated with a decreased risk of hay fever. Dose: 2,000 to 6,000 mg EPA/DHA daily with meals.

Want the Real Beauty Benefits

of Collagen? Generate It. Don’t Eat It! BioSil Advanced Collagen Generator ™

Clinical Trial Results

• Reduces Fine Lines and Wrinkles • Increases Skin Elasticity • Thickens and Strengthens Hair • Strengthens Nails By now you know. Adding body collagen directly reduces wrinkles, increases skin elasticity, and adds vital moisture to your skin. Indirectly, collagen thickens and strengthens your hair. You may also know that collagen production slows by 1% per year after the age of 21. Can you gain it back? Yes. But not by eating collagen. You see, collagen is a protein. When you ingest it, your body breaks it down, like any other protein, and uses it as food. When you want the real beauty benefits of collagen, you have to generate it.

BioSil™ generates collagen by activating the collagen producing cells in your body known as fibroblasts. It is clinically proven to increase collagen formation. In fact, in the clinical trial the women taking BioSil™ reduced wrinkles by 30%, increased skin elasticity by 89% and thickened and strengthened their hair by 13% compared to women not taking BioSil™. So when you want genuine visible results from collagen, generate it, don’t eat it. Experience the beautiful difference for yourself!

Dr. Marita Schauch, BSc ND debunks myths about collagen

“creams,” beauty industry promises and plastic surgery to show you how and why building and generating collagen is an essential component to true health and beauty in her newest book Collagen: Myths & Misconceptions.

ALLERGY

MANAGEMENT HELPING YOUR CHILD MANAGE FOOD ALLERGIES BY NANCY RIPTON

L

etting go is never easy, but for parents with an anaphylactic child relinquishing their role as a protector can be terrifying. Preteens and teenagers are at the highest risk of any age group of dying from anaphylaxis. Not only are they in charge of their allergies for the first time; during puberty the brain undergoes a re-ordering that leads to poor decision-making and risky behaviour. Here’s how to put your child in control of their allergies and keep them safe. COMMUNICATION IS KEY Teaching your child to make safe food choices should start as soon as they’re old enough to understand what an allergy is. “I’ve always spoken to Nicholas as if he was an older child when it comes to his allergies,” says Karen Jones, a Toronto-based mother of 15-year-old Nicholas. Now that he’s going out for lunch solo, she’s confident he will ask the right food questions. “Open lines of communication are key,” says Kyle Dine, the program coordinator for WhyRiskIt.ca. It’s never too early to talk with your child about the key concepts of staying safe. If you talk about allergies often, it will become second nature for your child to make safe food choices when the onus is passed on to him. ALWAYS CARRY AN AUTO-INJECTOR “My biggest fear is that Nicholas will forget his EpiPen,” says Jones. “Before he leaves for school each morning I ask if he has it with him; half the time the answer is no.” According to a study published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology only 61 percent of teenagers carry an auto-injector with them at all times. A combination of forgetfulness and wanting to fit in make always having an EpiPen or Twinject a challenge. “At this age children learn best by making mistakes,” says Jones. “But we can’t take that approach.” Even though parents want to relinquish control, they need to continue to remind their child to bring an auto-injector until their child is consistent in having it with them every time they leave the house. “Have a consistent spot for your child to carry their auto-injector,” says Dine. “Make it a routine to check for

the auto-injector before leaving the house.” Your child should also have a back up in their school locker and alert teachers and friends of the location of any auto-injector. DINING OUT In middle school children start eating out with their friends and going to homes where parents and peers may not be familiar with their allergy. “Children need to feel confident telling people about their allergies and asking if food is safe to eat,” says Dr. David Hummel, a Toronto-based immunology expert. “Always, always ask,” says Jones. “Nicholas will even ask me sometimes.” Your child should be comfortable calling ahead to restaurants to ask for their allergy policy, questioning wait staff about menu items, and asking staff to wash their hands and wipe down pans before preparing their meal. When they start taking school trips, your child needs to be a part of calling the hotel, airline and supervisors to go over any precautions in advance. A child with allergies must avoid taking food from others and always read food labels, looking for any alternative names of potential allergens. Above all, have a rule that you can’t eat any food if you forget your EpiPen. DATING Experts say you should start talking about sensitive issues two years before you think you’ll need to – yes, that means talking about kissing with your nine-year-old. “Kissing can be a huge issue,” says Dine. Proteins can stay in the saliva for a few hours after eating so anyone with an allergy has to ask what their partner has had to eat that day before going in for a smooch. VM

WHY RISK IT?

WhyRiskIt.ca is an allergy website by teens for teens. It was started two years ago to help preteens and teens deal with the social pressures of dealing with allergies. There are videos, podcasts and a reaction registry where kids can log their experiences or read what their peers are going through.

The Pregnancy Vitamins

SUPPLEMENTING WITH THESE NUTRIENTS CAN BOOST THE HEALTH OF YOUR BABY AND MAKE FOR A SAFER DELIVERY. BY NANCY RIPTON

W

hen it comes to pregnancy you don’t need a lot of added vitamins – and too much of certain vitamins can even cause problems. For example, high levels of vitamin A have been linked to birth defects. Your best bet is to look for a quality prenatal vitamin and to always talk to your doctor about what vitamins best suit your needs. It’s best to start taking these vitamins before you become pregnant. Unsure of what to look for? Here are a few must-have vitamins for any woman thinking of getting pregnant. Make sure your multi-vitamin has sufficient amounts or supplement on their own. FOLIC ACID Folic acid, a B vitamin, reduces the chance of a baby having a neural tube defect, like spina bifida, where the spine or brain does not form the right way. Your multi-vitamin should con-

54

tain 400 to 800 micrograms of folic acid. A 2015 study by the March of Dimes Foundation found that sufficient intake of folic acid during pregnancy saves about 1,300 babies every year from neural tube defects. In fact, since folic acid fortification went into effect in 1998 the percentage of babies born with neural tube defects has declined by 35 percent. IRON Iron can help prevent anemia – low red blood cell count. It's important to take the vitamin dose prescribed by your doctor, so talk to a physician prior to supplementing with iron. A 2014 study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology found that adequate iron intake can also reduce the risk of autism. Iron is crucial to early brain development, contributing to neurotransmitter production, myelination and immune function. All three of these pathways

have been associated with autism. Iron is even more important if you’re an older mom. The University of California study found that low iron intake was associated with a five-fold greater risk of autism if the child’s mother was 35 or older at the time of the child’s birth. IODINE Iodine is critical for a woman’s healthy thyroid function during pregnancy. Iodine deficiency is relatively common and can have a negative impact on the development of the baby’s brain, can stunt physical growth and cause deafness. A 2014 study in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that IQs are reduced by a few points in babies born to women without sufficient iodine. Iodine supplementation should start prior to pregnancy, and pregnant women should take around 250 micrograms of iodine per day and continue while they are breastfeeding. CALCIUM Calcium is also important for a pregnant woman. It can help prevent her from losing her own bone density as the baby uses calcium for its own bone growth. Low calcium levels are also linked to increased

levels of lead in the blood, which can be harmful to a developing baby. A study in the American Journal of Epidemiology found that women with the lowest levels of calcium had the highest levels of lead in their body.

Adult Essentials Gummies Pure Source Omega-3 Omega-3 fatty acids are essential for brain development and they also help ward off post-partum depression. However, it can be difficult for some pregnant women to deal with the fishy after taste of some supplements. These gelatin-based gummies taste great are a great source of DHA and EPA. 054.VIVA Preggers.indd 55

OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS You won’t find these in a multi-vitamin, however omega-3 fatty acids are considered brain food and supplementing with them will boost the DHA levels in your newborn and in your breast milk. It will also ensure that your DHA levels remain high, helping to ward off depression after giving birth. It has been suggested that omega-3 supplementation during pregnancy may increase birth weight and length of baby. DHA is important in the growth and development of the infant’s brain and has shown positive effects in preventing respiratory illness during the first year of life. Omega-3 fatty acids are also being studied for their potential effects in reducing the risk of preterm births. Supplementing with omega-3 fatty acids can reduce the risk of miscarriage in women with an autoimmune disorder called antiphospholipid syndrome. VM

KNOWLEDGE IS POWER WHEN IT COMES TO YOUR HEALTH. HERE ARE NATUROPATHIC DOCTOR MARITA SCHAUCH’S LESSONS FOR LIVING THE GOOD LIFE. BY BONNIE SIEGLER

Balance, for me, is being passionate about what I do – and I love my job,” says Dr. Marita Schauch, a graduate of the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine. The Vancouver Island-based doctor has also been associated with Toronto’s Preferred Nutrition as a woman’s health expert and educator since 2010. “A lot of my clients say: `Oh you must eat perfectly.’ I’m not perfect,” says the 37-year-old. “I try to eat as cleanly as I can, but my husband and I enjoy going out for dinner and I enjoy a glass of wine once in awhile. I actually drink coffee – organic, without cream and sugar.” Here are a few of her secrets for looking and feeling your best.

PREVENTATIVE MEDICINE “Sometimes people are looking for that magic pill, but if you look at the body holistically, there are a lot of things we can do preventatively to make sure hormones stay in check and that you live life to the fullest,” says Schauch. Eating properly by cutting out refined sugars, not drinking too much alcohol or too much coffee is a huge part of living optimally. In her own kitchen, nutritional staples include lots of fresh greens such as kale and chard, blueberries either fresh or frozen, organic chicken and fresh salmon. She eats very little dairy because she finds it to be inflammatory from a digestive perspective. Coconut, almond, hemp or cashew milk are good alternatives. “Rotate your dairy alternatives,” says Schauch. Variety is the key to optimal health. Drinking more water to stay hydrated is another simple lifestyle change that can go a long way to improving your overall health. Start off your day with a cup of warm lemon water – it’s great for liver health and digestion, plus it boosts your metabolism,” says Schauch. Another huge factor in Schauch’s lifestyle is to get moving. “I find huge balance in taking my dog out for a walk when I get home from work. It might not be an hour, but 10 to 15 minutes of moving and getting out, taking time for yourself is really important for stress reduction. There’s a new tagline: sitting is the new smoking. We are so sedentary and it’s leading to obesity, type-2 diabetes and heart disease. I think getting my blood going is important for my mental and emotional aspect, plus overall balance.” To add to her list of positive lifestyle changes is being more conscientious about environmental toxins such as those found in plastics or beauty products such as shampoo and deodorant. “Switch to more natural products. Get a glass water bottle or mason jar,” says Schauch. SLOWING DOWN THE AGING PROCESS “One of the biggest things that accelerates aging is inflammation,” says the author of Collagen Myths and Misconceptions and Making Sense of Women’s Health. Living a healthy, balanced life and reducing stress will boost collagen naturally. Collagen is responsible for keeping your skin elastic and reducing fine lines, however it’s also an important component for your joints, tendons, ligaments, cartilage and maintaining flexibility in all your blood vessels. So whether it’s yoga, meditation, deep breathing, acupuncture, massage, exercise – anything you can do to reduce that stress response is important. THE POWER TO CHANGE “Knowledge is power, so the more information and education I can give my patients, the more they’re apt to make positive changes to their health,” says Schauch. “I’m not saying to throw everything in your house out, but making small, little changes day-by-day can lessen the insult on the body.” VM EARTH ISSUE 2015 / VIVAMAGONLINE.COM

LIVING OUT LOUD FOR FITNESS MODEL BUNNY AZZOPARDI, FITNESS HAS BEEN THE KEY TO EMPOWERMENT AND LIVING OUT HER DREAMS. BY BONNIE SIEGLER • PHOTO BY PAUL BUCETA

I

f you put all of Bunny Azzopardi’s accomplishments back-to-back, they might tower over the 5-foot-4 fitness model and entrepreneur. The wife and mother of three young boys lives in Mississauga, ON where she began her fitness odyssey four years ago, placing first in all three categories of her first competition. Now at 44, the fitness celebrity recalls her motivation to enter that first Fitness Star competition. “My oldest son – now 17 – was competing in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. While he was training, I had someone telling me I should compete,” says Azzopardi. Although she admits to being shy, she decided to give it a try. “I thought it was a good way to train along with him and support each other.” SHE’S A SURVIVOR High energy, passion and fitness have been the key to Azzopardi’s amazing results, while also giving her a sense of empowerment. “It’s not necessarily in the way I look, but what I’ve accomplished in my life,” she says. “It’s about how hard I’ve worked to look the way I look. The strength of myself comes from within.” Working in this field has benefited and boosted her self- esteem. “Right up until my last competition, I still didn’t like getting on stage. I now have the confidence within myself to know that I can do it if I really want to. I can do whatever I set my mind to. I enjoy fitness modeling because it’s for me. I’m doing something solely for me.” She admits to a “colourful, difficult childhood.” Her challenging early years have had a silver lining though. “That’s where my competitive nature comes from. I had to learn to be a fighter, a survivor.” HANGING UP HER TRAINING SHOES Azzopardi’s last competition was in September 2014, however she continues to train five days a week because she enjoys feeling fit and healthy. “One day is legs, then chest and back, legs again, shoulders and arms,” she says of her weekly workout routine that also includes 20 minutes of daily cardio. She also continues to eat well. Her nutritional staples include: jars of protein powder, spinach, egg whites and chicken. She also supplements with Vitamin C, omega-3 fatty acids and daily calcium. In spite of mostly healthy living, she does cop to having some junk food in the house. “I have kids and I’m not the type of mom who says oh, we can’t have this in the house,” says Azzopardi. Her main guilty pleasure is Nutella. “People tag me on Facebook every time they see something Nutella,” she laughs. “And I’m say: ‘Not now, I’m training.’” What does the future hold in store for her? “I tell everybody that I’m living out loud and doing this for me,” says Azzopardi. “I never thought I’d be doing what I’m doing now. I just got signed with the women’s version of Muscle Pharm Fitness.” Anything is possible. She’s determined and ready to take on the world. VM 58

Desperate? There’s a better way to cool the burn down there… You know the feeling, it’s a vaginal infection with a burn so intense you’ll do just about anything to get relief, not to mention all the other uncomfortable symptoms that come along with it. But it’s just one of those (many) things that women have to deal with every once in awhile, right? Not so much... what you may not know is that vaginal infections are caused by having too much bad bacteria down there. VagiCare is a probiotic that naturally restores good bacteria and treats and prevents vaginal infections naturally, without any questionable ingredients. And it’s even refrigerated, making it THAT much cooler!

Music is an outlet for me,” says Taryn Manning. “I’m able to get out my feelings and emotions, whether happy or sad. It’s a projective way for me to express myself; it’s all mine, not someone else’s words. My lyrics are pretty honest.” In addition to a solo career that saw the debut of the music video “All the Way” earlier this year, Manning is also part of the electronic pop duo Boomkat with her brother Kellin. The siblings released their debut album Boomkatalog. One in 2003 and their second album A Million Trillion Stars came out six years later. “I’ve been a part of so many musically driven films and I don’t think that’s by accident,” says Manning of her roles in films such as 8 Mile and Hustle & Flow. In addition to singing, she also likes to spin tunes as a DJ and has her own clothing line Born Uniqorn (temporarily on hold due to time constraints), which she released in 2005 with her BFF Tara Jane. The message behind the line is to be true to yourself and to be unique – hence the quirky spelling. Yet in spite of all these accomplishments, the 36-year-old is best recognized for her role as the terrifyingly twisted, meth head 64

turned born-again Christian Tiffany “Pennsatucky” Doggett in Netflix’s breakout hit Orange Is The New Black. “People will grab me now—they’ll actually grab me—and be like, ‘Heeeeyyy!’ It’s scary; I’m just, like, walking, I’ll be grabbed from behind, and it’s this scary, huge man, that’s like, ‘You!’” (In reference to Pennsatucky.) She even gets mail from prisoners. “I thought I would get a lot of hate mail with the religious stuff and racism that my character displays; but I haven’t so that’s a good thing.” HUMBLE BEGINNINGS Manning is the first to point out that “growing up wasn’t easy.” The Tucson, Arizona raised star said that her challenges “shaped me into who I am now. There were a lot of hardships, but also a lot of beauty.” She reminisces that her first job was at age 13 because she had to help out her family. “I had to lie and say I was 15 to get it.” She grew up in a mobile home and admits, “Sometimes I miss the sound of rain falling on our tin mobile home.” She says that in spite of humble beginnings her mother was a great influence on her and she grew up very well educated. “My mom made the most out of what we had,” says Manning.

EVEN THOUGH MY LIFE IS SO UNIQUE AND HECTIC, THERE’S ALWAYS A PLAN.

Manning’s mom also instilled an appreciation for good nutrition and healthy living. “I learned the benefits of wheat grass, carob instead of chocolate, acupuncture, meditation and living a holistic lifestyle, which I’m so grateful for today,” she says. In fact, Manning just returned from the Optimum Health Institute clinic for a mind, body and spirit cleanse. Adopting a holistic lifestyle, Manning has embraced meditation to help centre herself in this crazy world. “I do a lot of guided meditations, mostly at night,” she says. “Not TM, but some chanting, breathing and meditation. It helps clear my mind and it lowers any stress levels that might have built up. It helps me deal with the uncertainly of life better.” HEALTHY ON THE RUN Manning’s constant travel for work leaves little time for home cooking. When she is at home in her Hollywood kitchen, she makes lots of salads, fresh vegetable juice and keeps burritos in the freezer due to her penchant for Mexican food. “I don’t eat chicken or red meats; just a little bit of fish. It’s a combination of moral and health reasons,” she says. “I love making a salad full of greens, garbanzo beans, half a can of tuna, shaved Parmesan, cherry tomatoes and I mix that all up in a giant bowl. “I’ve got to say I’m not really happy with the way fruits and vegetables are grown though.” To help supplement for produce that may not be as nutrient rich as it was decades ago, Manning takes supplements including a multi-vitamin and vitamin D. She admits that her exercise routine is anything but regular. “Does running through an airport with my DJ stuff, backpack and bag count as constant exercise?” she asks earnestly. 66

“Seriously, my legs have become stronger from all of that.” The actor also walks her dog Penguin every morning. In terms of traditional exercise Manning does yoga and a ballet barre workout whenever possible. Growing up moving and grooving to music, it’s no surprise that barre classes are her favourite form of exercise. “It hits almost every area of the body,” says Manning. “It just feels really good to get back in there and stretch. SURVIVAL SKILLS In addition to everything else on her plate, Manning is starring in Lifetime’s Cleveland Abduction, which premieres April 25th. It’s based on Michelle Knight’s best-selling memoir of the Cleveland kidnappings; Manning plays Knight. “It was amazing to portray such a strong survivor,” says Manning. In spite of everything that happened to her she just didn’t give up. Manning continues to be motivated to do more and to shape her future, in part by her family and friends and in part by a life-long survival mode. “There’s probably some ego thrown in there too,” she admits. “It’s all fun though. It’s an amazing business I’m in and there are not a lot of us who actually get to make it. I think I’ve been severely typecast in Hollywood as an edgy type of woman and there certainly isn’t an innocence about me. I’ve lived a life of independence for a long time. I’ve not done anything terribly bad, but I’m not naïve at all.” She pauses and there’s complete silence for a full minute. Then she smiles and everything is right with the world. “I think gratefulness keeps me going and the odds of what I do keep me going. There are a lot of reasons why I keep going.” VM

INGREDIENTS: • 3 medium red beets • 3 medium golden beets • 3 medium striped beets • 4 cups baby arugula • 3⁄4 cup pomegranate seeds • 1⁄2 tsp. sea salt • 1⁄2 tsp. fresh cracked black pepper GOAT CHEESE CROUTONS: • 8 oz. fine herb goat cheese or regular goat cheese • 1 cup panko bread crumbs • 3 eggs, beaten • 1⁄3 cup all-purpose flour • 2 cup vegetable oil, for frying

ALMONDS: • 1 cup almonds • 1⁄3 cup brown sugar • 1⁄4 cup water • 3⁄4 tsp. sea salt • 1⁄2 tsp. cinnamon VINAIGRETTE: • 1 tsp. lemon juice • 1 tsp. lime juice • 1 tsp. orange juice • 1 tsp. whole grain mustard • 1 tsp. chopped shallot • 1 tsp. honey • 1⁄4 cup grapeseed oil • 1 tsp. sea salt • 1⁄2 tsp. freshly cracked black pepper

DIRECTIONS: 1. Trim beet stems and steam until barely fork tender, approximately 30 to 45 minutes. 2. Peel beets once they cool down enough to handle. Slice each beet into six wedges and set aside. 3. For the vinaigrette blend all ingredients except the oil, and whisk in a non-reactive bowl. Once ingredients are incorporated slowly drizzle in the oil while mixing until emulsified, set aside. 4. For the almonds, line a small baking tray with parchment paper. Combine sugar, water, cinnamon and salt in a frying pan and bring to a boil. Stir in almonds and cook until the sugar and water reaches the consistency of a thick syrup. Remove to a baking tray lined with parchment paper and allow to set. 5. Place the flour, egg and panko into separate bowls. Roll the goat cheese into balls the size of marbles. Dredge each ball individually in the flour, egg and then panko. Freeze for at least 30 minutes. Remove from the freezer, and coat with egg and panko again and freeze until you are ready to fry. 6. Heat the oil in a pot on low-medium heat, test the oil by sprinkling some panko. Fry croutons gently until golden brown, remove with a slotted spoon to paper towel. 7. To plate the salad, toss the beets and arugula separately with the vinaigrette and season with salt and pepper. Gently lay down the arugula in the bowl and layer with equal portions of the beets, almonds, pomegranate and goat cheese croutons. Drizzle each salad with extra vinaigrette if desired..

INGREDIENTS: • 2 x 8 oz. 1-inch grassfed striploin steaks • 1 tbsp. sea salt • 2 tsp. fresh cracked black pepper • 1 tbsp. vegetable oil • 2 tsp. unsalted butter

BUTTER: • 1⁄2 cup unsalted butter, room temperature • 2 tsp. chopped rosemary • 2 tsp. chopped thyme • 1 green onion stalk, finely sliced • 1⁄3 tsp. sea salt • 1⁄3 tsp. fresh cracked black pepper

ASPARAGUS: • 1 lb. thick green asparagus spears • 1 tsp. lemon zest • 1 tbsp. fresh lemon juice • 1 tbsp. olive oil • 2 tsp. salt • 1 tsp. fresh cracked black pepper

DIRECTIONS: 1. In a small mixing bowl combine ingredients for compound butter and place aside. 2. Remove steaks from the fridge approximately one hour prior to cooking to allow them to get close to room temperature. Pre-heat oven to 400 degree Fahrenheit. 3. Line two rimmed baking trays with parchment paper. 4. Heat a large frying pan on medium-high heat and add oil. The pan should be lightly smoking prior to adding the steaks. 5. Season steaks on both sides with salt and pepper and lay down in pan. Cook for approximately two minutes on one side and flip steak. After one minute add in two teaspoons of butter and spoon butter over steak for 30 seconds. 6. Transfer steaks to one baking tray and pour excess juice and butter over it. Place in oven for five minutes or until a thermometer reads 125 degrees Fahrenheit. 7. Remove from the oven and allow to rest on a plate, again pouring juice from baking tray over the steak. 8. While steak is in oven, bring a large pot of water to boil and add salt. Have a bowl of ice and cold water near by. 9. Add asparagus to the boiling water for 10 seconds (blanching); then remove to ice water for one minute (shocking). Remove asparagus from ice water and shake off excess water. Toss in lemon juice, zest, oil, salt and pepper. Bake on a baking tray for approximately three to five minutes. 10. Serve steak with compound butter and asparagus. (Note let steak rest for at least five minutes prior to adding butter and serving.).

OCCUPATION: Actor WHAT’S YOUR SECRET FOOD VICE? It’s not such a wellkept secret; I have a giant sweet tooth. WHAT IS YOUR NUMBER ONE COMFORT FOOD? My mom’s spaghetti. WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST FOOD CHALLENGE? I feel hungry very often throughout the day. I try not to leave the house without an apple or almonds or some other healthy snack; otherwise it’s too easy for me to succumb to a pastry. When I eat meals, I try to be mindful of what will keep me feeling full and energetic. WHAT KEEPS YOU EATING A BALANCED DIET? Over the past few years, I’ve become interested in nutrition and how food can act as both fuel and medicine. I feel more focused and energetic at work when I’m eating well. This is especially a huge motivator when I’m playing a surgeon in a fast-paced show like Remedy. DO YOU HAVE ANY FOOD DISLIKES? I can’t handle extremely spicy foods. WHAT MUST YOU ALWAYS HAVE IN YOUR FRIDGE? Coconut water, almond milk, kale, carrots, Greek yogurt, lemons, eggs and dark chocolate. WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR GO-TO MEALS? I use quinoa a lot, and fancy it up with different vegetables and flavours. Grilled chicken and salmon are also staples. WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE SUMMER DISHES? I make a refreshing salad with watermelon and mint. Also, my home

is in Vancouver, B.C. where there is an abundance of delicious sushi. WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE MEAL TO MAKE FOR GUESTS? My friends and I typically do pot luck get-togethers. F

or the last hundred years or so, the world of architecture and décor has celebrated technologies and materials that made building homes easier, faster and cheaper to build. Advances in glass manufacturing, for example, made the picture window possible, and improved insulation materials have led to more energy efficient houses. New types of plastics and synthetic textiles have changed a generation of housewares. These days, though, there seems to be a renewed focus on décor that reflects the natural world, and in using ancient materials in new ways. Perhaps that’s because there’s increasing evidence of a connection between the mental and physical health of individuals and the health of the planet. Simply put, we feel better when we’re more connected to nature, and when we spend more time outdoors. Maybe that’s why, in this uber-connected, high-tech world, we’re seeing so much building design and home décor that’s inspired by nature. Homeowners often need practical advice about how to incorporate natural elements into interior décor. The first rule is to use a light touch. Too many rustic elements can overload a room and lead to a kitschy look. I love working with clients to create a balance between organic and industrial materials, so that both are shown off to their best advantage. Here are a few ways to bring the outdoors into your home. BE A COLLECTOR Start small, perhaps by placing a bundle of interesting tree branches in an elegant vase, or featuring found objects, such as a bird’s nest (fallen only, of course), stones collected at the beach, or drift-wood on a console table or display unit.

DISPLAY LIVE-EDGE FURNITURE Another easy way to bring a natural vibe to any room is to add a piece of wood furniture that has a live or unfinished edge. There were lots of examples of live-edge furniture at the Interior Design Show held in January 2015 in Toronto – a sure sign that it’s having a moment. Some of the prettiest came from Artemano, which specializes in natural and rustic décor and furniture. If a full-size dining or console table with a live edge doesn’t suit your budget or taste, start small with a bowl or platter with an unfinished edge on a sleek coffee table or countertop. GO FLORAL Flowers are a time-honoured way of bringing the outdoors in, and you can never go wrong with a silver bowl brimming with colourful blooms. I also like using succulents because they have a sculptural quality. For an unexpected contrast, place them in an antique biscuit barrel or vintage cookie tin. Even adding a few plants to a kitchen shelf using an affordable planting system can strengthen the connection between indoors and out. Life-like floral patterns are now blossoming on textiles. In the bedroom, you can mix and match them in the spring and summer with stripes or solids for a fresh, outdoorsy look. VISIT THE PARK If you’re still stuck on how to bring natural motifs indoors, take a walk through your local park. Be inspired by the myriad greens of trees and leaves, the subtly shifting blue of the sky, and the fluid shapes of rocks and stones. After all, when it comes to design, Mother Nature rarely gets it wrong. VM EARTH ISSUE 2015 / VIVAMAGONLINE.COM

Don’t Clean Your Home

WITHOUT THEM

EVERYONE CAN BENEFIT FROM USING GREEN HOUSEHOLD CLEANING PRODUCTS, HERE’S HOW TO CHOOSE YOURS WISELY. BY NANCY RIPTON

ccording to Stats Canada, the number of Canadian households using eco-friendly household cleaning products has grown dramatically over the past decade. While cleaning green may cost a little more money, the pay off is worth it. “As our awareness goes up on issues such as global warming, people want to find ways to lessen their impact on the environment and slow down the depletion of natural resources,” says Desiree Armstrong, Marketing Manager for Aspen Clean. “People want to be environmentally conscious and buy green for their home.” Biodegradable packaging is also gaining popularity. The move away from traditional cleaning products also has to do with their impact on our health. The chemicals in traditional household cleaning products linger in the air and we breathe them in. A 2014 study by the European Lung Foundation found that cleaning products are the second leading cause of asthma. The main offender is ammonium, but 133 unique volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have been detected in common household cleaning products. Chemicals in cleaning products can also enter our bodies by absorption through the skin or ingestion of residues left on dishes and cutlery. Plus, when cleaning products are flushed down the drain, they can have a serious impact on aquatic ecosystems. Much like the packaged food you buy from the grocery store, you need to be wary of cleaning products that label themselves as “green.” Look beyond the front label to the list of ingredients. In Canada, it’s not a legal obligation for manufacturers of cleaning products to label or list hazards. Some cleaning companies are claiming to be using green cleaning ingredients when they are in fact not. Research the products beyond the surface to be sure you’re getting the best for you and your family. CLEANING PRODUCT WATCH LIST In general, you should avoid any cleaning product that has the word “danger” or “poison” on the label. “If you read ‘May Be Fatal,’ it’s probably something you want to keep out of your home,” says Armstrong. When it comes down to ingredients to avoid, the list is lengthy. However, here are a few of the main chemicals and ingredients to steer clear of: SYNTHETIC FRAGRANCES: Almost all of the chemicals in fragrances are synthetic compounds derived from petroleum. “These can alter your skin’s surface tension and allow more chemicals 86

to be absorbed through your skin,” says Armstrong. Synthetic fragrances can also cause allergies and asthma. SLS AND SLES: These are foaming agents. You can often find both of these in dish soaps, liquid laundry detergents, shampoos and bubble baths. SLS is a skin, eye and respiratory tract irritant that Environment Canada has categorized as inherently toxic to aquatic organisms, flagging them for further assessment. To make SLS less irritating, it is often ethoxylated (by adding ethylene oxide), resulting in the modified compound of SLES. SLES is also a concern because it is contaminated with 1,4-dioxane, which may cause cancer. DYES: Dyes are unnecessary and only used to attract customers. “Why does a cleaner have to be blue or green for you to want to use it?” questions Armstrong. Natural colours should be a selling point instead. FORMALDEHYDE (ALSO KNOWN AS FORMALIN): When many of us hear formaldehyde we flash back to grade school and the poor frogs floating in a jar in science class. We also remember the stench. “Do you want to wipe your counters with that?” asks Armstrong. Formaldehyde has been classified as a known human carcinogen. It also causes asthma and allergies. BLEACH AND AMMONIA: These chemicals are extremely dangerous, especially when they are mixed together with other cleaning products. They can produce toxic and even fatal fumes. WHAT TO LOOK FOR INSTEAD Now that we’ve pointed out everything to be wary of, what’s left to clean your home with? Armstrong has complied a list of natural ingredients and how they work to keep your home clean – and healthy to live in. VINEGAR: It cuts grease, removes mildew and fights odours. Plus it can get rid of stains and wax build up. CITRUS: Fights bacteria, cuts through oil and deodorizes. ESSENTIAL OILS: Leaves behind a pleasant smell, cuts grease, deodorizes and disinfects. Certain oils can also have aromatherapy benefits. Lavender, for example, calms the nervous system. NATURAL BASED ALCOHOLS: A strong disinfectant. BAKING SODA: Great for scouring and also a deodorizer. WATER: Works charms in all its wonderful simplicity. If you haven’t already gone green with your cleaning products, now’s the time to start. Here are five products that deserve a place on your cleaning shelf.

THE PET POOP PROBLEM HOW TO BEST REDUCE YOUR PET’S CARBON PAW PRINT.

T

BY NATASHA BAGULEY

here are environmental concerns with almost every decision we make in life and dealing with our pet’s waste is no exception. According to DoodyFree, an eco-friendly pet waste disposal company in London, Ontario, a 75-pound dog generates over 500 pounds of waste per year. A 2014 survey conducted by the Canadian Animal Health Institute concluded there are roughly 6.4 million dogs and seven million cats living in Canadian homes. This all adds up to one big poopy problem! WHAT TO DO WITH YOUR PET’S DOODY? Let’s begin by looking at the options. First, leaving it on the ground to return to nature is not an option, not even in wooded areas. When it rains, dangerous bacteria can make its way into storm drains and into waterways. And while using a plastic grocery-type bag is a slight improvement because the waste is actu-

88

ally being removed, everyone now knows we don’t need more plastic bags in landfills. Ecofriendly dog owners have moved to biodegradable bags. They are inexpensive and can be purchased almost anywhere pet products are sold. They are much better than regular plastic bags, however the problem with these popular biodegradable bags is that well-intentioned pet owners are led to believe they are the perfect environmental solution. In reality, they may not break down quite as well as anticipated. According to the David Suzuki Foundation: “In most landfills conditions prevent organic material from decomposing. Furthermore, poop in landfills leads to water contamination and methane gas production.” Some American landfills were excavated as a part of Dr. William Rathje’s Garbage Project. Many organic materials that people expect to easily and quickly decompose were found mummified

VIVAMAGONLINE.COM / EARTH ISSUE 2015

VIVA PetHealth_no ad.indd 88

2015-04-10 2:04 PM

in the heart of landfills – including decade old newspapers, hot dogs and a full head of lettuce. If the conditions aren’t perfect for decomposition, these biodegradable dog waste bags could sit in landfills for years. A better option would be to keep this waste out of the landfill completely, which leaves two choices – compost or flush it.

According to the Sea Otter Alliance in California, “Even though lots of animals, including birds, have toxoplasma, only cats shed toxoplasma eggs in their poop.” They recommend bagging cat feces instead of flushing or composting. “We do know that the only way to prevent sea otters from being infected is to reduce cat poop in the environment.”

COMPOSTING YOUR PET’S WASTE A backyard composter is a great solution for dealing with pet waste, although it does require some work and may not be for everyone. First off you need enough space to be able to pick an appropriate spot away from food sources. Water needs to be added frequently and digester powder can be added weekly to accelerate the breaking down process. Any compost generated cannot be used near edible plants. If done properly though, it is probably the best solution for the environment. If done incorrectly, dangerous pathogens may not be killed and you could end up with one smelly mess. If you like the idea of composting, but prefer to leave it in the hands of professionals, there are companies that will pick up your poop and compost it. Companies like DoodyFree can either pick it up right off your lawn or provide bags and a bin that is picked up weekly for a very reasonable fee.

ECO-FRIENDLY CAT LITTER Although you can’t flush or compost the cat litter, you can use a more environmentally friendly version. Popular clay-based litters are not biodegradable and also produce a potentially hazardous dust. Instead, look for litter made from recycled or renewable plant resources like corn, beet pulp, pine, wheat, walnut shell or recycled newspaper. Many of these are available in clumping options. It may take a bit of experimenting to find out what works best for you and what your cat will prefer, but the environmental benefits are worth the effort.

FLUSH IT! You might be surprised to learn many municipalities recommend flushing dog poop. It is then properly processed, and there are no concerns about bacteria being released into the environment. Innovate products are being designed to help with this process including flushable waste bags. Flush Puppies are 100 per cent certified compostable bags made of Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA), a water soluble, eco-friendly alternative to plastic. Much like toilet paper, they break down in water. They are reportedly safe for both sewers and most septic systems and are most appropriate for smaller to mid-size dogs. You can also buy Clean Paws Doodie Bags – the first dog waste bag made from at least 50 per cent recycled plastic. OPTIONS FOR YOUR CAT The same rules do not apply to cat waste disposal, which is a bit trickier. Cat feces can carry toxoplasmosis parasites, the reason pregnant women are told to avoid cleaning litter boxes. It therefore shouldn’t be flushed or composted. Sewage treatment processes may not kill the parasite, which is often resistant to chlorine, and it will eventually make its way into waterways. Deaths of sea otters have been linked to waste run-off carrying toxoplasmosis.

OTHER PETS Are there any environmental concerns with other pets such as rabbits, birds and hamsters? Not really. There are plenty of environmentally friendly options in bedding used to line cages, including wood shavings, recycled newspaper and natural corncob products. Plus, rabbit poop doesn’t have any of the complications associated with dog and cat feces and actually makes excellent garden compost. VM

TRY THESE!

Flush Puppies Doodie Bags These flushable doodie bags are certified compostable by the Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI). They provide an eco-concious option for picking up after your dog. You can flush bags down the toilet or toss them in the trash. (60 bags, $8.99USD)

Eco-light Light Weight Clumping Cat Litter New eco-light™ LightWeight Clumping Cat Litter is half the weight of traditional scooping litters, and provides powerful, long lasting odour control. It’s also biodegradable, compostable, dust free and is made with recycled materials. (6kg, $11.99)

f you’re like me, you were first introduced to Mädchen Amick as Shelley Johnson in David Lynch’s cult classic Twin Peaks. Amick, whose German name means “young woman” made viewers come to love her sensually innocent character. Since then, the mom of two has worked on a myriad of projects, and currently stars as sexy Wendy Beauchamp in Lifetime’s supernatural drama Witches of East End. In it, her fabled enchantress can shift between human and cat form, often putting her character in troublesome predicaments along the way. Amick enjoys her alter ego’s unearthly ways and admits she believes in magic. “There is a huge universe out there,” says Amick. “I’m not arrogant enough to say there’s one certain way of thinking about the supernatural, the universe and beyond. I’m certainly open to the idea that there’s magic in the world and there’s a lot we don’t know.” FOOD AFFECTS EVERYTHING One thing that Amick does know is that healthy eating and regular exercise add balance to her life and keep her looking and feeling her best. “I don’t drive myself crazy if I have a treat,” says the actor. “Sometimes that donut is too good to pass up.” Most of the time though, Amick sticks to healthy foods and follows a diet that includes almost no dairy, refined sugar or refined wheat products. “I’m lactose intolerant so unfortunately I cannot eat ice cream,” says Amick “So sad. I’ll have the frozen coconut milk ice cream instead and I eat hard cheese such as Parmesan, which is high in protein but low in fat. I’m not a chocolate person, thankfully.” Amick is also a vegetarian. “I’ve had no meat since I was a teenager,” she says. However, that was it in terms of dietary

restrictions growing up. Raised in Reno, Nevada, Amick admits that nutritional awareness was lacking in her household. After modeling and a subsequent move to Santa Barbara, California, the 5-foot-6 beauty began her health odyssey with natural and organic eating. “It was like a light bulb went off in my head,” she recalls. “All of a sudden I began to take complete responsibility for what I was putting in my body and how that affected everything.” LOOKING GREAT NAKED It’s not enough just to eat right, however, Amick makes fitness a priority. “I like to look good, but it’s also about being strong and being able to get through the rigorous schedule of filming that makes regular exercise important to me,” says the former Elite model. “Then there’s also the added pressure of being naked on set – as Wendy is quite a lot.” A yoga devotee for the past 20 years, Amick maintains her weight at 120 pounds, as opposed to her former 110 pounds when modeling. “I like to have more muscle on me so I’m happy where I’m at right now,” she says. In addition to her regular downward dogs, Amick stays in shape by alternating cycling, kickboxing and running workouts. TROPICAL BLISS Of course the last ingredient to a balanced life is down time. Amick credits her dad, who played music for military bases, for instilling a love of travel. “I have a soft spot in my heart for tropical locations,” says Amick who likes to head there to unwind. “Hawaii brings back really good memories of travelling with my dad – he was the leader of the Bobby McGee Band. Now, if I ever have downtime, I love to go to Kauai to and relax.” VM EARTH ISSUE 2015 / VIVAMAGONLINE.COM

VIVA READERS SHARE THEIR SECRETS TO ATTAINING OPTIMAL HEALTH, NATURALLY

BRITTANY NEELY (CENTRE WITH HER TWO CHILDREN) AGE: 39 OCCUPATION: Teacher HEALTH ISSUE: Fatigue and colds SYMPTOMS: As a working mother with two young children (and many high school freshmen) I occasionally wear down and become fatigued which leaves me susceptible to the colds that frequent the campus and those brought home by my young ones. HEALTH RECOMMENDATIONS: A life-long vegetarian, my diet of fresh locally grown produce helps keep my energy up. If I feel really tired, a nap will always help. The best thing I have found is to nap when your little kids are napping. No distractions, and everyone wakes up feeling refreshed. In addition, I drink copious amounts of spring water and juices for hydration. I also exercise and practice yoga – both of which energize me. THE RESULTS: When I do get a cold, I feel it’s not as severe as if I didn’t do all of the above natural things to keep my body in optimum running order. Not only do I enjoy eating a vegetarian diet and doing regular yoga, but it really does help with my stamina and overall well being. This helps me have the energy and focus to play with my children.

DEBBIE WASSON (CENTRE WITH HUSBAND AND DAUGHTER) AGE: Withheld OCCUPATION: Law firm administrator HEALTH ISSUE: Maintaining healthy weight for stamina SYMPTOMS: I travel often for my work – sometimes four days a week. I need to maintain a healthy weight so that I don’t get sluggish or exhausted with my schedule. HEALTH RECOMMENDATION: To assure I meet my activity goals each day, I use a Fitbit step-monitoring device. This helps me stay active and ensures that I take enough steps to burn the calories I have consumed that day. I also make sure I eat a good amount of fresh foods, and foods that are low in sugar. I find if I have a lot of sugar I experience a slump late afternoon. Before putting an item in my cart at the grocery store, I check the package for grams of sugar and carbohydrates per serving. If the per serving number of sugar grams is higher than 10, I leave it. THE RESULTS: I am able to maintain a healthy weight and also keep my strength and stamina in check so that I don’t experience an energy drain later in the day. This also helps keep my insulin levels constant.

PLEASE CONSULT YOUR HEALTH-CARE PRACTITIONER FOR ANY HEALTH CONCERNS.

STEVE VALENTINE (WITH VIVA COVER GIRL ELISABETH RÖHM) AGE: 49 OCCUPATION: Publicist for the Valentine Group, Los Angeles HEALTH ISSUE: Fatigue, stress, numbness in extremities, and sporadic high blood pressure SYMPTOMS: As a top PR guy in Los Angeles, handling celebrity events and balancing luxury hospitality brands, I’ve had issues of numbness in the extremities, headaches and general malaise intermittently. HEALTH RECOMMENDATIONS: After consulting with my doctor to confirm that there were no major cardiovascular issues going on, I went back to my background as a Gold Medal ballroom dancer. Movement heals me and dance has always been my avocation as a participant, teacher and competitor. I simply have to make time to exercise to keep the blood going, to relieve the mind’s preoccupation with over stimulation at the job and to enjoy the release and endorphins that come with the physical activity. THE RESULTS: Dancing, whether taking the Sweaty Sundays aerobics and jazz class or prepping a new ballroom routine for a showcase gives me more energy and a clear mind so I can focus on my daily hectic routines. Exercise also lowers my blood pressure so that my headaches go away, as does the numbness.

DEBI OLCESE AGE: 57 OCCUPATION: Business owner HEALTH ISSUE: Rheumatoid arthritis with systemic lupus SYMPTOMS: Fatigued, sore joints and trouble focusing. I get fuzzy brain. HEALTH RECOMMENDATIONS: If I sweat every day, I feel better. If I do not exercise, I hurt more. I try to run or bike every day. My doctor uses the mantra: use it or lose it! I also do not eat meat and stay clear of caffeine and sugar. THE RESULTS: So far I have been able to hold off some of the pain with regular exercise. I feel so much better when I’m moving. If I miss a day of working out my joints are so stiff I can hardly move. Photo credit Elisabeth Caren

ELECTRIC AVENUE

IN ADDITION TO BEING AN ACCOMPLISHED ACTOR AND PRODUCER (THE BLING RING, LIVING WITH ED) RACHELLE CARSONBEGLEY IS A LONG TIME GREEN ADVOCATE. HERE’S WHY SHE FAVOURS AN ELECTRIC CAR AS HER PREFERRED MODE OF TRANSPORTATION.

BY BONNIE SIEGLER

RACHELLE CARSON-BEGLEY WITH HER HUSBAND ED BEGLEY JR. EN ROUTE TO THE 2015 OSCARS.

Q. WHAT CARS HAVE YOU DRIVEN IN THE PAST?

Q. WHAT ARE SOME HIDDEN BENEFITS OF DRIVING

A. My favourite all-time car was the General Motors EV1. It was fast and it handled like a Porsche. Unfortunately, GM recalled it, crushing an incredible project. Not a good period for the American automotive industry. Around the same time, 2001, I bought my first Prius. That car is still running.

A LEAF?

Q. WHY DID YOU SWITCH TO THE NISSAN LEAF? A. Actually, the LEAF is Ed’s (husband Ed Begley Jr.) car, but I try to drive it any chance I get. I still own a 2010 Prius for longer hauls, but when Ed isn’t driving the LEAF, I drive it. It’s baby blue and drives like a dream. It’s amazing driving a 100 per cent electric car. Q. HOW MUCH MONEY DO YOU SAVE DRIVING THE

LEAF? A. Considering we usually charge the car at our friend Bill Nye “The Science Guy’s” house, driving is practically free. His house is entirely run on solar power. Ed and I are building a new lead platinum house for ourselves that will be entirely powered by solar power. It will be completed this June. However, there are so many places now that cater to electric vehicles that it has become very easy to charge the car when needed. Q. WHERE DO YOU DRIVE MOSTLY? A. Living in the Los Angeles area one drives almost everywhere. Unfortunately we still don’t have the most convenient transit system. I do believe that it is changing and it’s getting better. Most of our driving is within the 84-mile of range of the LEAF. (The electric car can go for 84 miles – or 135 kilometers – on a single charge.)

94

A. The LEAF is an all-electric automobile. It qualifies for a white sticker that gets you is a carpool lane, regardless of how many people are in your car. It is fabulous to spend less time stuck in traffic. The LEAF is also fast and compact so it’s easier to get on and off the freeway and park quickly. Q. HOW DO YOU FEEL THE LEAF IMPACTS THE

ENVIRONMENT? A. Everything has an impact on the environment, but the LEAF certainly has less impact than a car that has carbon dioxide bursting from its tail pipe – not to mention the consistently changing price of gasoline. I feel empowered driving a car that is certainly a step in the right direction when it comes to helping clean up the air and getting us off a very imperfect power source. I am certain that there is still a better solution and I have faith that one day we will find it. Q. HOW DO ECO-FRIENDLY CARS HOLD UP? A. Prior to owning the LEAF we owned an all-electric Toyota RAV4 EV. We enjoyed driving that car for 13 years and it wasn’t in the shop for a single day. So far, we have had the same incredible luck with our LEAF. There are so many great choices now for all-electric and hybrid cars. It has been my experience having had three Prius hybrid cars and now three electric cars that they are way below the average car when it comes to needing repairs. I would also like to mention, as far as reliability, they are above and beyond. VM

Lisbon Portugal

BIG ON CHARM, THIS EUROPEAN CAPITAL IS A LAID-BACK AND RELAXING CHOICE FOR YOUR NEXT HOLIDAY DESTINATION. BY BONNIE SIEGLER

L

isbon offers all the delights of world-class shopping, extraordinary cuisine, museums and nightlife, with half the fuss of other major European capitals such as Rome or Paris. Spread across seven steep hillsides that overlook the Rio

Tejo, the real adventure is in wandering the narrow cobblestone lanes of the city’s curvy tree-lined streets. Here’s a quick look at what to do and where to stay when you visit this charmed city.

WHERE TO STAY The Bairro Alto Hotel is located in the hilltop bohemian district of Bairro Alto, just a few blocks from Lisbon’s fashionable and lively Chiado district. This five-star funky boutique hotel has the friendliest staff and the best rooftop terrace in town – a great place to sip cocktails at sunset with panoramic views of the city and Tagus River. Within walking distance are galleries, boutiques and restaurants, plus a lively square out front where local musicians and performers gather to entertain the public.

THE TOP FIVE THINGS TO DO ON YOUR NEXT TRIP TO LISBON

1. Discover the Castelo de Sao Jorge, a towering castle dramatically sitting above Lisbon. It’s worth the crowded trolley ride and walk up.

VIVA Travel Feature.indd 96

2015-04-10 2:09 PM

5. Take the 20-minute trip outside of town to the quaint Portuguese town of Sintra, once a retreat for Portuguese royalty looking for serenity away from the city. Lord Byron described the town’s lush greenery as a “glorious Eden.” Atop a hill, the eighth century Moorish castle, a holdover from Arab rule, is where most tourists flock. From the outside, it looks rather drab – after all, it is a military fortress. Once inside, however, you’ll understand its grandiose appeal with Moorish tiling, artwork, and even a bit of creativity in the kitchen. Also visit the cheerfully coloured Palace, a former summer residence of the Portuguese royal family.

4. Bring back something made with cork – a placemat, purse or even a pair of earrings. Cork is Portugal’s number one exported good.

3. Enjoy lunch at a patio restaurant in one of the many backstreet cobblestone lanes.

2. Visit the Museu Calouste Gulbenkian. The Museum showcases an ambitious collection of Western and Eastern art, gorgeous Persian carpets, Qing porcelain, the Rene Lalique jewelry collection and masterpieces from Rembrandt, Van Dyck and Rubens. EARTH ISSUE 2015 / VIVAMAGONLINE.COM

YOUR HOROSCOPE BY LOUIS ROBERT

Taurus (Apr. 20 - May 20) Spring always gives you a nice boost, however this year you may feel as if you’re attached to a rocket! Home repairs and renovations, gardening, celebrating new family members (by marriage or birth) will all have you doing a whirling dervish; but seriously, aren’t you having a lot of fun?

Gemini

(May 21 - Jun 21)

People behind the scenes may be gunning for you now so if you can elude them by taking a trip, then do so. Or maybe this trip is for the usual type of escape to a place of hidden, exotic delights. It’s best to take leisure time now as there won’t be any for you this summer – you’ll be too busy

Cancer (June 21-July 22) At times you are stubborn and headstrong (like Taurus); now, you’re feeling more cooperative in your dealings with others. At least be more flexible when it comes to your boss or others that hold power over you. Rebelling will only give you another bellyache so give others what they want now if you want to keep the peace.

Leo (July 23-Aug. 22) Quit complaining about your workload. Firstly, we’re all working harder now. Secondly, it’s been far worse for you in the past. Now, like Aries, you can see the fruits of your labours and the kudos are nice ego strokes, right? So don’t ruin it with your “royally selfish” demeanor or someone will take you down a peg. Humility will bring greater rewards.

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Someone enters your life now and, like a breath of fresh air, helps you to feel better about yourself. Now is a good time for a rest or holiday, or maybe even a big change in your life. Romance? Yes, it’s very possible, or at least a new kindred spirit helps reduce your worrying ways. New activities are a great idea too.

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct.23) Librans love to decorate their home and you’re itching to spruce up everything now! Slow down and enjoy the process, because if you don’t you’ll probably spend far too much. Late spring may bring a new romance or friend to help decorate the digs. Isn’t that nicer than doing it alone? A new relationship is a great excuse to pamper yourself at the spa and rejuvenate.

Scorpio (Oct. 24-Nov. 21) You have been very busy dealing with troubles or responsibilities these past two years and some may have taken advantage of your vulnerable period. Those who deceived or undermined you may regret it now. Your strength and energy are rebuilding quickly thanks to Mars and you will not retreat from any dispute. Try to be instructional and not vindictive. 98

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You often think fast on your feet and are good at outrunning most troubles, if not able to shoot them down like a video game wizard. You are so busy that you may feel you’re in a video game now. If so, look for those hidden “power-ups” or bonuses that extend your energy. Enjoy any down time now while you can before life gets very demanding in late May.

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) To be an earth sign this spring is golden. Firm up all plans now, whether work, home or play related and all should go smoothly more often than not this year. You’re at the very best time for creating new beginnings or getting the “bugs” out of nearly any endeavour. Yes, you do have a small supply of “magic pesticide” now so clean up and clear out anything that is pestering you..

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Is it laziness or conscious avoidance of duties you should undertake that is the wrench in your leisure time? Regardless, conflicts will arise now, demanding to be resolved. You can continue to sweep them under the carpet, however eventually you’ll trip over that mountain of procrastination. Stubbornly refusing to see the trees while in the forest will leave you lost in the woods.

Pisces (Feb. 19-Mar. 20) By now you may be wishing the world could stop spinning and give you time to catch your breath. It is a busy year so far but that’s a good thing right? Right! So don’t let fears or delusions of doom bring you down. Stay positive; keep on your pathway and April showers will definitely bring May flowers for you Fishes.

Aries (Mar. 21 - Apr. 19) Seeds of new beginnings in late winter will bear early fruit this April. Your work pace may increase but at least you can see the rewards for your efforts. Think about exactly what you’re doing, as you may not realize you are laying new foundations and structures in your life. Live more consciously.
