Rejuvenate

and go beyond

Healthy Andrew Munaweera

Why it’s the Time To Renew and Restore It’s the 21st century and it’s time to rejuvenate. Why?

Because the health threats from our modern lifestyle reduce the health and functioning of our complex and sensitive digestive system. What are these potent lifestyles threats that can compromise our health? • Constant stress from work, family and finan cial pressures • Rushed eating • Eating at irregular times • Suboptimal or poor food choices • Not enough sleep or poor quality sleep • Spending too much time using electronic gadgets such as tablets, smartphones, com puters, televisions and e-readers • Exposure to environmental pollutants which accumulate in the nervous system tissue and body fat tissue over time • Presence of aggressive, dangerous and drugresistant microbiological predators caused by the overuse and misuse of antibiotics. These microorganisms can create extreme illness or even death. These health threats exert unwanted effects on our highly complex, active and sensitive digestive system. The human digestive system, or gut for short, consists of the mouth, the esophagus, the stomach, and the small and large intestines. Consider these amazing facts about your digestive system: • Length: 27 feet long (in an adult human) • Weight of the bacteria in your digestive tract: 3.5 pounds • Number of bacteria in your digestive tract: 100 trillion — or 10x the number of cells in your body • Surface area of your digestive tract: the size of a tennis court (if you laid it out completely) So how do you maintain and restore digestive health to protect yourself from our 21st century lifestyle threats? Simple…with a complete Rejuvenation System—one that leverages the power of probiotics.

Rejuvenation

Rejuvenation means to restore to an original or new state; to make young or youthful again. True rejuvenation starts at the core where all health, healing and vitality begins – the human gastrointestinal system, or gut. More specifically, gut rejuvenation starts by focusing on enhancing the balance and quantity of probiotic bacteria along the entire length of your digestive tract.

Probiotics

and effective in published human clinical trials (look for Lactobacillus bulgaricus, LB-51 strain; Lactobacillus acidophilus, NAS strain; and, Bifidobacterium bifidum, Malyoth strain)

Rejuvenation: Go Beyond Healthy

5. Clearly stated potency through a printed expiry date

Because of the complexity and power of the digestive system, rejuvenation is the only answer to truly improve gut health, gut function and move beyond just being healthy. By combining ancient healing knowledge with modern scientific research, gut rejuvenation uses a unique and powerful probiotic system of friendly bacteria to gently transform the health and functioning of your entire digestive system. The results are immediate and noticeable.

The Key to Rejuvenation: A Powerful Probiotic System

Only a complete and specialized probiotic system is powerful enough to rejuvenate your incredibly complex gut and protect it from your lifestyle. To understand why, you need to understand the difference between a probiotic rejuvenation system and conventional probiotics.

Conventional Probiotics

Why probiotics?

Because you need gut care that goes beyond simply managing and fixing. You may have, or could have, real issues in need of resolution. If any of the above mentioned threats pertain to you, you can benefit from rejuvenation and starting with the gastrointestinal tract is your answer.

The Rejuvenation Solution

1. Select super strains of microorganisms proven safe

There are good bacteria and bad bacteria in your digestive tract. Probiotics are the good, friendly bacteria. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines probiotics as “Live bacteria that may confer a health benefit on the host.” The quantity and quality of this microflora balance within your gut can either make you vital and alive or sick and dead. That’s why gut rejuvenation is so important – it quickly and powerfully enhances the quantity and quality of your friendly bacteria.

Conventional probiotic products work fine for general health maintenance. Much research has been done over the past 50 years — and especially in the last 20 years – on probiotics in many forms (capsules, cultured milk products, powders and drinks) and using many different types of probiotics (Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus rhamnosus and, Bifidobacterium longum, to name just a few). You can recognize conventional probiotic products because they’ll usually contain multiple strains of bacteria on the label in specific “mixtures.” The better quality probiotic products will be found in the refrigerator.

To rejuvenation solution starts with the rejuvenation of your digestive tract. Rejuvenation happens by shifting the quality and the quantity of the friendly bacteria living throughout the entire length of your digestive system. Let me introduce you to the concepts of rejuvenation and probiotics so you can better understand the importance of why you need to rejuvenate your digestive system with a probiotic system.

contain. The use of five core technologies allows us to differentiate a probiotic rejuvenation system from conventional probiotic supplements. Here’s what to look for:

In contrast, a probiotic rejuvenation system moves beyond these conventional probiotics because a probiotic rejuvenation system contains powerful technology designed to deliver the most potent probiotic microorganisms directly to target areas in your digestive tract. So how do you spot an authentic probiotic rejuvenation system?Easy…for what they contain and what they don’t

press maximum probiotic properties

3. The use of an effective delivery system to help the bacteria survive passage through the harsh environments of hydrochloric acid and bile

4. Refrigeration during manufacture, distribution and storage

for each strain of probiotic used

6. Protective packaging made of dark glass bottles and

metal lids to maintain potency through protection of heat, moisture and damaging UV light

And, finally, here’s what an authentic probiotic rejuvenation system doesn’t contain: of microorganisms expressed by weight only 1. Potency (in milligrams, mg)

2. Two or more species listed on the label without potency expressed in colony forming unit (cfu) activity

3. Gas-producing fructooligosaccharides (FOS – a type of indigestible, fermentable prebiotic)

4. The claim of shelf-stability

Go to your local Loblaws Natural Value Department to learn more about using a Probiotic Rejuvenation System to enhance your digestive health and move beyond being just healthy.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO US!

THE PASSION OF BALANCED LIVING

Founder/Publisher Olivier Felicio Editor Nancy Ripton Art Director Scott Jordan West Coast Entertainment Director Bonnie Siegler Junior Designer Tamara Kelly Editorial Assistant Maya Akbay PRODUCTION Production Manager Erin Booth

It’s hard to believe that this fall Viva is celebrating its 10th anniversary. A lot has changed since we first started bringing natural wellness information into your home. First, people are more aware of supplements, natural health and wellness. Ten years ago natural health was a niche market, now looking for natural ways to boost your health is mainstream. Another big change is that Viva wants to make it easier than ever for you to access the healthy products and supplements you see in our magazine and online at vivamagonline.com. To celebrate Viva’s 10th anniversary we’ve created myVIVAstore.com where you can find all the natural products that the editors and experts at Viva know work. It’s also where you may want to stock up on items to keep your family healthy this year. When it comes to health, we often fall a little short of ideal. We tend to treat colds once we already have the sniffles or a cough, or wait until we’re bowled over by the flu to stock up on vitamin C. Likewise, we often wait until the coldest winter months to think about flu prevention. In reality, fall is the ideal time to think about your family’s immunity. A good health routine now can set the stage for a healthful year. Back to school should also mean back to health living. To help you get started turn to “Natural Immunity Boosters” (page 78) and learn how simple changes in your routine, and a few supplements, can make for a healthier year. It’s also likely that you’re leaving a more restful summer for a sleep deprived, all-out lifestyle. Lack of sleep is one of the major reasons for illness, as sleep takes the same toll on your immunity as excessive stress. It’s not just chronic sleep loss we should worry about. After just 24 hours without sleep, detrimental changes in our immunity have already started. To find out more about the impact of sleep deprivation, and learn how to have a more restful year, turn to “Sleepless in Canada” (page 74). This issue is packed with ways to keep your whole family in optimal health this year – including your family pet (page 108). I challenge you to make a few healthy changes this fall and make this your healthiest year ever! We look forward to bringing you more trusted information in the many years to come. Viva balanced, healthy living!

This issue we decided to go behind the scenes with food photographer Steve Krug and see what it takes to make Viva’s recipes look so delicious. First of all there is prep – a lot of it. There’s a reason your table setting may not look so fabulous at home. For every one plate used, there are at least a dozen more that don’t make the cut. And when the team can’t find the right hue? They paint, like in the case of the bright red noodle bowl seen here filled with noodles. There’s a lot of cooking and a lot of prep that goes into each shot. Please turn to page 91 to see the results. Then experiment at home and have some fun in your own kitchen. HOW DO YOU DEFINE BALANCED LIVING?

Meditate, rest, clear my head and make time for my friends. That’s how I find balanced living. It’s a big challenge though. Balance is something I struggle with. I love to sing and I love what I do so I’m a bit of a workaholic. I have to avoid overbooking myself and try to take time to smell the roses. Balanced Living means making time for the people who love you the most. I used to have it backwards and think I should make time for the people I have to see. No! Spend the time with the people you want to see and that helps bring balance into my life.

Get the Look FALL BEAUTY REFRESH

Summer’s harsh climate can wreck havoc on your skin and hair. Steal these celebrity beauty secrets for recharging your look as you head into fall. BY BONNIE SIEGLER

THE NATURAL WAY

Improve the health and strength of your hair (and nails) with these natural capsules that combine the power of L-cystine, bamboo and biotin. The formula provides your body with the vital nutrient support it needs. Biotin maintains lustrous hair while ensuring strong nail growth from the base of the nail.

TINA FEY

THE NATURAL WAY

Nature’s Bounty Hair & Nails (60 capsules, $8.99)

Celebrities aren’t immune to breaking nails. To keep her nails strong and healthy, Fey follows the advice of her manicurist Ashlie Johnson. Fey applies Chanel’s Base Protectrice Protective Base Coat three times a week. It’s enriched with camellia oil to keep nails from breaking and it also helps strengthen the whole nail bed.

Get strong and healthy nails with this nail oil containing neem leaf and anthyllis that provides healthy nail growth to make sure you never break or chip a nail. The chamomile extract soothes and softens the cuticles.

DREW BARRYMORE

THE NATURAL WAY

Dr. Hauschka Neem nail oil (30ml, $41.96)

As a working mom with two small children, Barrymore knows about the effects of sleep deprivation and its impact on beauty. “I use Flower Glisten Up Highlighter Chubby in Gold Coaster on my cheekbones and blend with my fingers for an impeccable shine,” says Barrymore. “It makes me look alive when I’ve had too little sleep.”

The rejuvenating properties of this face cream protect and lift the skin to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. When used twice daily, algae extracts tighten the skin, as the rye seeds boost firmness. Also contains shea butter, antioxidant CoQ10 and watermelon extract.

JULIANNA MARGULIES

THE NATURAL WAY

To make her makeup last throughout the day The Good Wife star likes to prep her skin beforehand with L’Oréal Paris Magic Lumi Light Infusing Primer. It helps anchor colour and keeps everything in place for hours on end.

Aubrey Organics Lumessence Lift Face Cream (1oz, $33.50)

Create the perfect canvas to make your foundation last longer, smooth skin and fill in fine lines. Made with pomegranate, red and white tea, sea kelp, and vitamin C and E, this age-defying, crueltyfree antioxidant primer is also free of gluten, parabens, and artificial colours. MARIAH CAREY

Colourist Kyle White says bleaches and ammonias along with summer wind and sun dry out Carey’s hair by early fall. To keep her locks healthy, White mixes a few drops of rosewater into the dye when he applies it to Carey’s long locks. “Rose oils moisturize the scalp to help prevent dryness and breakage,” says White.

nder eye circles may well be one of the greatest beauty struggles of all time. Before you put finger to face and try to cover them up, take a few minutes to ponder what’s at the root of your circles. Chances are you can lighten them up – or even eliminate them. And, if all else fails, we have secrets for the perfect cover up.

THE ROOT OF YOUR DARK SHADOWS Once you know what’s causing your dark under eye circles, finding a solution will be much easier. Here are the most common causes of dark shadows: TOO LITTLE SLEEP No one knows for sure why sleep loss triggers under dark under-eye shadows. Theories say the shortfall in shut-eye can suck the colour from the skin’s surface, making it easier for the purple shades to burst through pale skin. Aim to get at least seven hours of sleep a night and always remove makeup before you go to bed. If you doze with your head propped up, you’ll keep fluids from backing up around the eyes and reduce puffiness, which can in turn reduce the appearance of dark circles. ALLERGIES Do you suffer through weeks of sniffles each allergy season? Allergies can do more than make your nose stuffy. Allergies can also create dark circles around the eyes as part of an immune system reaction. If you think you may have allergies, speak with your doctor to confirm your suspicions. DIETARY CHANGES Your diet can have a huge impact on under eye circles. Vitamin K, antioxidants including vitamin C and A, as well as B12 supplements keep blood vessels healthy and reduce the appearance of under eye circles. Your under eye circles may be the first sign that your diet is lacking these nutrients. Eat at least five servings of fruits and vegetables a day. Search out citrus fruits such as oranges and grapefruit, plus red bell peppers, strawberries, broccoli, and kiwi for a vitamin C boost. Vitamin A calls for root vegetables and greens, like squash, carrots, pumpkins, and collards. Get your B Vitamins by eating foods such as walnuts, wild salmon, yogurt, spinach and oysters. When it comes to vitamin K, you’ll find it in sweet potatoes, brown rice, oatmeal, 36

VIVAMAGONLINE.COM / FALL 2014

TIPS and milk. Beyond the food you eat, you can call your local dietician for advice on possible supplements. DEHYDRATION Step away from the saltshaker. Too much salt causes water retention which lets blood vessels peek through the skin. You also need to be sure to drink enough water – at least eight glasses a day, more if you sweat a lot. When you’re dehydrated, the body holds onto the fluids you do have, making you puffier. SMOKING The chemicals in cigarettes glue themselves to the blood’s hemoglobin every time you light up. Hemoglobin is the blood’s taxi service carrying oxygen to all body tissues. When the cigarette chemicals take a ride instead, they bump the oxygen off the trip, causing your blood vessels to appear bluer. GENETICS Sadly, you can’t change darkness that you inherit. If you were born with dark circles embedded in your DNA there is little you can do to change them. People with darker skin tones often struggle more with dark circles because they have added browns and golds in their skin tones. When these tones are laid over blue veins, they can create a purple hue under the eye areas. The structure of your face can also enhance the appearance of dark under eye circles, causing the eye bones to case a natural dark shadow underneath. AGING & SUN EXPOSURE As you age, your skin thins, revealing more blue veins underneath. Sun damage can speed up this thinning. Ideally you should stay out of the sun during the peak burn hours of 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.. Always wear sunglasses that are marked for both UVA and UVB sun protection, and use an eye cream that has an SPF.

THE PERFECT COVER-UP

While some of the above reasons can be corrected, in many cases hiding dark circles is your only option. Follow these eight tips for the best under eye coverage ever and watch your dark circles disappear.

1. Always Moisturize First Concealer needs to be applied to a non-flakey surface in order to look smooth. The best creams have a retinol base to help thicken the skin. Also look for caffeine, which helps constrict blood vessels redirecting blood away from the area, and Vitamin K to help heal broken blood vessels. 2. Avoid Using Foundation Under Eyes Foundation is too dark. Your ideal brightening colour is a shade lighter than your actual skin and foundation colour. Also, the foundation formula is not creamy enough to keep the under eye area smooth and it can appear cakey. 3. Only Dab the Dark Spots Only dab concealer over the darkest area of your skin. If you cover the entire under eye you will create white cast-like raccoon eyes because the brighter shade is used to bring a recessed dark area forward. When applied to a section of the skin that isn’t recessed, it will make that area pop out looking either puffy or white.

4. Find the Right Colour Match Despite what many women are told about some faces needing peach concealer and some needing yellow concealer, it’s actually not true. All concealers for under eyes should be peach based. Yellow hues won’t hide blue tones. The yellow concealers made by cosmetic companies are designed to cover red blemishes on the skin, not the blues and purples found under the eye. The lightest skin tones, like Nicole Kidman, will need pale peach concealers. Medium skin tones, such as Penelope Cruz, will need a medium peach. For darker natural skin tones, or when you get a tan, the under eye area will turn more purple Viva_Ad_Suro_OT.pdf

suro

than blue. In this case your concealer should have a touch of yellow, but is should still be a peach base. If it’s too yellow, the under eye area will look green or ashy. Medium Dark skin tones, such as Halle Berry, would wear a medium yellowbased peach. Darker skin tones, such as Oprah Winfrey, need a strong dark peach to orange. In fact, most darker skin tones such as East Indian and African American ethnicities, use a dark rich orange concealer – even darker than a pumpkin. Don’t be afraid to layer concealer colours. Some women may need to use two concealers – a peach- or orange-based hue to counter the blue vein shades and a yellow-based concealer to match your facial skin and finish the look. 1

2014-08-08

5. Get Highlights For stubborn darkness in spots, use a highlighting light reflecting wand. This is a much more translucent creamy concealer that has a pearlescent shine that reflects light away from the dark areas. They come in tubes like lip gloss or in a long circular pen-sized container with a synthetic lip brush attached to the end where the cream comes out. 6. Ready Set To set the concealer, look for finely ground setting powders that you can barely feel between your fingers; look for package phrases such as “secret brightening powder.” These will set the concealer with no visible lines. Test them on the knuckles of your fin-

gers to spot if they make the lines stand out or fade away. Concealer needs to be set with a translucent powder to stay in place and last through the day. 7. Pass on Mascara Skip mascara on bottom lashes; it creates shadows drawing attention to the concern you want to hide 8. Pass on Purple Avoid purple eye shadows, which will reflect purple back down into the lower eye area. Anything red near the eyes will also make the purple circles more noticeable so steer clear of burgundy eye shadow too. The best hues are golds, golden taupes, bronze and peach. VM

BEAUTY TERMINOLOGY BAMBOO Bamboo has been increasingly used for cosmetics and personal care, especially for hair and nail products for its hydrating, nourishing and soothing properties. These properties help to provide nails with resistance to tearing and peeling, along with the use of bamboo in products such as lip balm and mascara.

SEA KELP Studies show that those who have diets rich in kelp have lower rates of ovarian, endometrial and breast cancers. It’s also an excellent source of vitamins and minerals, helping with metabolism and energy levels as well as regulating thyroid hormones. The properties of sea kelp hydrate the skin and protect it from the sun.

PEANUT OIL Peanut oil contains resveratrol, a polyphenol antioxidant that has been found to have protective function against cancers, heart disease, degenerative nerve disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and viral/ fungal infections. It contains high levels of vitamin E that protects the skin from harmful oxygen-free radicals.

SHEA BUTTER Shea butter is used for moisturizing purposes for skin and hair due of the African tree Vitellaria paradoxa, shea butter is effective in treating skin conditions including: scars, eczema, burns, rashes and acne as well as containing some sun and UV protection properties.

SMILE PROTECTING DRINKS Soft drinks and sweetened juices can do more than just add unwanted calories and sugar – they can ruin your smile. New research published in the Journal of Dentistry found that high acidity drinks such as soft drinks, some juice and sports drinks can cause lifelong damage to teeth. Dental errosion occurs within the first 30 seconds of an acid attack and is irreversible. If high acidity drinks are consumed, brushing your teeth even 30 minutes later can’t prevent damage. LET’S HOPE MOM BREASTFED Yet another study is out to tout the benefits of breastfeeding. This time the benefits are reflected on health later in life. According to researcher in the Proceedings of the Royal Society of Biological Sciences young adults who were breastfed for at least three months have a significantly lower risk of chronic inflammation associated with cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. The study also shows that birth weight has implications for children’s health decades later. Researchers looked at the effects of both birth weight and breastfeeding on levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), a biomarker associated with inflammation. Chronic inflammation increases the risk of both cardiovascular and metabolic disease. CRP levels were 20 to 30 per cent lower in individuals who were not breastfed. They were also lower in babies with a birth weight above six pounds.

Meet Our Expert: Steve Ozanich, a mindbody writer and health-consultant, penned The Great Pain Deception based on his own experience, the work of pioneering pain-physician John E. Sarno, MD, and 10 years of intensive research. Over the years, Ozanich has helped to heal thousands of people, and his book has recently caught the attention of two filmmakers, magazines, world-renowned marketing experts, clinical pain scientists, and several celebrities; including an Oscar winner. The Great Pain Deception was twice honoured in the International Book Awards (IBA) as Runner-up in both Best New Health Book of 2012, and Health Alternative Medicine. In addition to being a mindbody health consultant, the Ohiobased Ozanich is a health blogger with JenningsWire, health lecturer, engineer, certified personal fitness trainer, acoustic guitar player, and golf swing coach.

Q. COULD YOU HAVE TMS? A. Tension Myoneural Syndrome (TMS) is the most common disorder you’ve never heard of. Everyone has experienced it to varying degrees; it’s universal. TMS is a mindbody syndrome that was first discovered by Dr. John Sarno in the 1970s. The basic concept behind TMS is that repressed emotions reveal themselves through the body with things such as chronic and acute back pain, hand and foot pain, knee and shoulder pain, chronic fatigue syndrome, irritable bowel and fibromyalgia, as well as, the skin and immune system. People often get upset and feel insulted when told about TMS, because they only hear, “it’s all in your head.” However, that’s not true. No one is saying that. It’s a very real mindbody disorder that often gets blamed on defects in the physical body. Personally I threw Dr. Sarno’s book across the room when I first read it. Now I’m so happy I opened my mind to it later on. I’m free of pain for the first time that I can remember. The pain is very real, however, it’s rooted in the unconscious mind. The mindbody connection is immensely powerful and responsible for almost everything physical that we get, not counting injuries of course. However, medical systems are set up to only treat the body; ignoring the cause of the symptoms altogether. Thus, epidemics are rampant because we’re looking at the wrong things in healing. The body is the effect not the cause of pain. The cause is the emotions that the sufferer never realizes she’s repressing. With TMS, the pain exists to protect you from experiencing a difficult and painful mental state. The brain creates the symptom to distract you from anger and anxiety so that you’ll be forced to obsess on your body. It’s diverting your awareness away from the true cause of your pain. Your brain is actually doing you a favour by reducing blood flow to an area to create a painful sit56

VIVAMAGONLINE.COM / FALL 2014

uation, so that you don’t have to think about emotions that are too sad, too powerful, or too threatening. For example, instead of feeling extreme anxiety you feel back pain. For some reason, the knowledge of what is truly happening begins to heal people. It’s as though the covert action of the brain is uncovered, ruining its strategy of deceit—and healing begins. The typical TMS sufferer is a type T personality (T for tension) is a perfectionist with higher levels of anxiety, and often depression in their life. They’re usually gentle and nice people who place high demands on themselves to please others. If you think you may be suffering from TMS, the first thing to do is to get a physical exam to rule out anything life-threatening. Then, you need to reject the current diagnosis and all the abnormalities as seen on the imaging, and accept that your pain is initiated by your mind. Sometimes just accepting this and understanding that you can be healed through your thoughts is enough to make the pain go away. However often it takes more hard mental work. On occasion, TMS sufferers will need counseling to try to understand why they repress at such high levels, and to link the symptoms to their emotions. Overall, “belief” is the most important thing. If you believe your body is broken then the chronic symptoms linger because that’s exactly what your brain wants you to believe! If you believe your body is healthy then healing often begins immediately. The problem is that we’re constantly being told by doctors that our body is flawed, when it rarely ever is. We are far stronger than we think, and the abnormalities seen on MRIs and x-rays mean little to nothing; they’re simply there from normal aging. The proof is in the fact that virtually everyone heals from TMS despite the dire medical diagnoses. VM

Keeping your

VA-JAY-JAY Healthy HOW TO KEEP YOUR VAGINA IN TOP HEALTH – THE NATURAL WAY BY DR. KAROL WOJEWNIK

rey’s Anatomy may have first introduced us to the Va-jay-jay euphemism, but it was Oprah who made the term a household phrase and landed it in the Webster’s Dictionary. Whatever you call it, va-jay-jay or vagina, it’s important that you feel comfortable enough to talk about its health and common issue’s that can occur. Here’s a short cut to the vagina university and how you can graduate with a good knowledge of its overall health, plus some natural solutions for keeping it in good health.

It is also important that your sexual partner maintains good genital hygiene, as it is very common for the partner to introduce the bad bacteria that cause UTI’s. Drinking cranberry juice (unsweetened) or taking cranberry extract is also excellent for prevention of UTI’s, and for shortening their duration if they do occur. Cranberries contain compounds that hinder the attachment of bacteria to the inner lining of the genito-urinary tract.

NATURAL SOLUTIONS FOR URINARY TRACK INFECTIONS Vaginal hygiene is extremely important when it comes to reducing the risk of urinary track infections (UTI’s). Make sure the soap you choose is made from natural sources, and that it does not contain parabens. I do not recommend lavages since they wash out the good probiotic flora, making it more favourable for a yeast infection to occur. When you wipe after going to the washroom, it’s important to wipe away from the vagina and not towards it. Wiping back to front may introduce bacteria normally present in the colon that can cause UTIs.

YEAST INFECTIONS 101 Yeast infections are caused by a specific yeast called candida albicans. Although it’s a normal inhabitant of the vagina, candida is usually kept under control by the presence of good bacterial flora such as lactobacilli. However, when healthy flora is hindered through diet, environment, detergent use, antibiotics or a weakened immune system candida has room to multiply and flourish. Yeast infections can arise as a result. Candidiasis, or a yeast infection, is usually characterized by a white gelatinous discharge, inflammation of the walls of the vagina and vulva, and burning or itching. This irritation to the vaginal

walls and the cervix make both more susceptible to infections, including the papilloma virus (the cause of most cervical cancers). Candida also makes an unfriendly environment for sperm, which can lead to infertility problems. TREATING A YEAST INFECTION There are many effective anti-fungal medications for candidiasis. Unfortunately the oral ones have a negative impact on the liver. The local suppository medications are very effective and are minimally absorbed into the bloodstream, making them less toxic to internal organs. The problem with these medications, however, is that they also kill the good bacteria such as the lactobacilli. This is problematic because the lactobacilli help maintain a healthy pH in the vagina. Killing off the lactobacilli also leaves room for candida to return once the treatment is completed, creating a vicious cycle of yeast infections and treatment. There are, however, natural solutions for dealing with candidiasis. Simply soaking a tampon in kefir or sour milk and using it as a suppository will provide a healthy dose of good bacteria, making less room for candida to thrive. It may not be as effective as anti-fungals for a full-blown infection, however, applying this therapy prophylactically will substantially decrease the chances of getting the infection in the first place. It is also great right after anti-fungal treatment for the replenishment of the healthy vaginal flora. THE BIG C With regards to vaginal health and the cervix the major concern is cervical cancer. Cancer usually occurs due to an infection with papilloma virus. The papilloma virus is sexually transmitted, and the risk of such an infection increases when one has intimate contact with multiple sexual partners, when practicing unprotected sex with a partner of unknown sexual history, and when smoking cigarettes. Smoking has a direct effect on cervical cancer through carcinogens, but it also makes the cervix more favourable for the papilloma virus as well as for the virus to cause cancerous changes.

With the advent of the Papanicolaou (Pap smear) test, the rate of cervical cancer had dropped dramatically in developed countries. Most women should get their first Pap smear test at 21, or one to two years after first having intercourse (whichever comes first). The test should be performed once every three years if there are no negative changes found on the previous tests. This can be increased to once every five years if three tests in sequence come back negative. If the test comes back positive, medical measures should be undertaken (the nature of which depends on the severity of the changes), and the Pap smear should be done every year thereafter for at least five years. Although the test in not recommended for someone that has never been sexually active, there is a slight chance that the person may acquire cancerous changes due to cigarette smoke or random chance. In this case I recommend doing the first test at the age of 25, and then every five years thereafter. Cancers of the outer vagina (the part of the vagina visible on the outside) usually occur later in life. Therefore it is important to examine the vagina on a regular basis, especially as we age. Any suspicious growth or hardened area on the surface or under the skin should be examined by a gynaecologist. Also any change in pigmentation of the vagina or the surrounding skin should also be examined, as this could be the first sign of melanoma. VAGINAL DRYNESS Dryness of the vagina during menopause or post menopause can be problematic for women with regards to general comfort as well as during sexual intercourse. This dryness is a result of the natural drop in estrogen during this time period. Vaginal dryness can be resolved by using natural lubricants and estrogen creams (avoid products with a long list of chemical names that are difficult to pronounce). Estrogen creams get absorbed through the skin and though the mucosal surfaces of the vagina, however this absorption happens to such a small extent that it poses minimal risk with regards to negative estrogen exposure. Simply put, estrogen creams cannot be compared to hormonal replacement therapy. VM

Sexual HEALING

SOMETIMES THE LAST THING YOU WANT TO DO IS GET DOWN AND DIRTY. HERE’S HOW TO GET BACK IN THE MOOD. BY KAVITA SABHARWAL

L

ow libido and erectile dysfunction can affect personal relationships and cause frustration for everyone involved. However, treating sexual dysfunction can be as easy as taking herbs that help with the symptoms you are experiencing, or taking a supplement that contains the ingredients to treat several symptoms at once. Here’s how to get back under those sheets and learn to look forward to sex again.

FEMALE LIBIDO BOOSTERS Women who suffer from low libido are often dealing with an underlying sexual arousal disorder. If you experience a decreased blood flow, lack of lubrication, or a delay or absence of orgasm after experiencing sexual excitement you may suffer from a low libido. In addition, outside issues such as stress, relationship troubles, being raised with strict sexual taboos, fear of contracting a sexually transmitted disease, negative personal feelings including 60

guilt, anger or low self-esteem, fatigue or depression can reduce your libido. Experiencing genital pain after stimulation or during sex, involuntary vaginal spasms that cause issues with penetration, the inability to stay excited and avoiding sexual activity can also signal a low libido. Certain herbs may improve sexual arousal in women. First, there is Panax Ginseng, which helps prevent vaginal atrophy, improves strength and longevity and helps with vaginal lubrication. Maca helps women with hormonal issues and helps improve sexual stamina while relieving stress. Other herbs that can help alleviate symptoms of low libido include Di Huang, which increases the production of sexual hormones while increasing female energy and stamina; Noni, which balances female sex hormones while increasing feelings of relaxation and well being; and Horny Goat Weed, which balances hormones while restoring sexual excitement, relieving fatigue and even helps with menopausal discomfort.

MALE LIBIDO BOOSTERS Although many won’t admit it, erectile dysfunction is extremely common in men. In fact, studies have noted that about 35 per cent of men ages 40 to 70 experience moderate to severe erectile dysfunction, while 15 per cent of men between those ages have milder cases of the disorder. That equals 50 per cent of men that experience this disorder in their lifetime! Erectile dysfunction due to age is attributed to a decline in testosterone production over time, causing andropause, or male menopause. Several stressors that make it impossible to focus on sex, such as work-related stress or relationship problems, can also cause a loss of libido. Symptoms of erectile dysfunction include the inability to obtain a full erection, maintain an erection during sex, or experience an erection at all. A lack of morning erections is also associated with a decrease in libido.

TRY HerbaMAX For Women Enhances the libido, helps women experience an orgasm, balances female hormonal activity, reduces stress and anxiety, increases stamina and energy and helps to maintain arousal during sexual activity. Another benefit of this supplement is that it has positive effects for post-menopausal women. HerbaMAX is Health Canada-approved and has no recorded negative side effects. MATTERS OF THE

HEART HEART ATTACKS DON’T ALWAYS LOOK THE SAME – ESPECIALLY FOR MEN AND WOMEN. HERE’S HOW TO RECOGNIZE THE SIGNS BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE. BY KERRIE LEE BROWN

My Story… It all started on Christmas morning in 2012. I felt a heavy tightness across my chest that I had never felt before. It felt like someone was tightening a belt around my breasts and holding on for dear life. The feeling lasted for two weeks and even though it was foreign, I shrugged it off as holiday stress. A few weeks later, upon my family’s return from Florida, I started having heart-racing episodes three or four times a week, along with shortness of breath. At the same time, I was starting to get headaches more often than usual. Then, one morning at work, I had a panic attack standing in line at my office cafeteria. 62

of Collagen? Generate It. Don’t Eat It! BioSil Advanced Collagen Generator ™

Clinical Trial Results

• Reduces Fine Lines and Wrinkles • Increases Skin Elasticity • Thickens and Strengthens Hair • Strengthens Nails By now you know. Adding body collagen directly reduces wrinkles, increases skin elasticity, and adds vital moisture to your skin. Indirectly, collagen thickens and strengthens your hair. You may also know that collagen production slows by 1% per year after the age of 21. Can you gain it back? Yes. But not by eating collagen. You see, collagen is a protein. When you ingest it, your body breaks it down, like any other protein, and uses it as food. When you want the real beauty benefits of collagen, you have to generate it.

BioSil™ generates collagen by activating the collagen producing cells in your body known as fibroblasts. It is clinically proven to increase collagen formation. In fact, in the clinical trial the women taking BioSil™ reduced wrinkles by 30%, increased skin elasticity by 89% and thickened and strengthened their hair by 13% compared to women not taking BioSil™. So when you want genuine visible results from collagen, generate it, don’t eat it. Experience the beautiful difference for yourself!

Dr. Marita Schauch, BSc ND debunks myths about collagen

MATTERS OF THE

HEART

WHY SECONDS MATTER I am incredibly lucky that I’m okay even though I took weeks to respond to my heart attack. Looking back it was foolish to ignore the signs but I never dreamed that I could be having a heart attack. About half of all sudden cardiac deaths happen outside a hospital, meaning that a lot of people don’t act on early warning signs. A study in the Journal of Cardiovascular Nursing found that most men wait six hours before calling 911 when experiencing heart attack symptoms – this is often too late. Hershberg says that the faster you get to the hospital the better. Once you’re there, doctors can begin treatments like clotdissolving drugs or angioplasty in order to restore blood flow to the heart muscle and limit damage. “If you get to the hospital in a few minutes rather than a few hours, you are more likely to have a better outcome with less complications – and you are less likely to die,” says Hershberg. IS STRESS A FACTOR? Although it is difficult to diagnose stress as the sole cause of heart attacks – it is thought to be one of the major contributing factors to many health problems. 66

When stressed, the heart changes how it uses fuel for energy. This can play a major role in the development of heart disease. For women, when their heart is stressed it becomes much less efficient at metabolizing fat. However, when a male heart is stressed, it starts using more sugar as fuel. These changes in the heart can also affect how fat is stored and used in other parts of the body.

My Story: Over a Year Later As an active career-loving woman, wife and mom, it was extremely hard for me to admit that I needed to slow down and take care of myself. After my heart attack, my perspective on health has changed. Although I always considered myself a healthy person, I’m eating better, drinking more water, and have switched to decaf coffee. I’ve also started to see a naturopathic doctor and cardiologist regularly, combining traditional and non-traditional medicines such as herbal remedies and beta-blockers. I go to regular reflexology and massage appointments. I’ve also found out a lot more about my condition. For instance, in PSVT, there is a short circuit that bypasses this desired pathway and enables the heart to beat excessively fast. To treat this, cardiologists are able to locate and remove this alternate pathway and prevent this bypass from occurring. As a result, I am considering a Radiofrequency Ablation procedure that should eliminate the problem altogether. Today I feel rejuvenated physically and mentally. And I also know that it’s important to always listen to your body – no matter how healthy you think you are. VM

SYMPTOMS OF A HEART ATTACK “Men tend to experience the classic symptoms we associate with heart attacks: crushing chest pain often described as an elephant sitting on the chest that often radiates down the left arm,” says Dr. Melissa Hershberg, a Toronto-based doctor. “Other symptoms can be associated with the pain such as nausea, fatigue, heart palpitations and shortness of breath.” In some cases they feel an uneasy discomfort or pressure rather than pain. Chest pain or discomfort can come on fast or slow – and can last from a few minutes up to a few hours. In a study published in the American Journal of Critical Care, men generally reported more severe chest pain than women. They were also more likely to say their symptoms were brought on by exertion. However, another study found that 10 percent of men experienced no chest pain at all. In fact, experts say diabetics can have heart attacks without feeling pain. Women tend to experience less intense symptoms and the presentation often varies. “For instance, women can present with overwhelming fatigue or nausea, shortness of breath or dizziness – or chest pain that can be anywhere from central, left-sided, right-sided or even abdominal,” says Hershberg. “Sometimes no chest pain is present.” The pain can be in one or both arms, neck, jaw, back or stomach. These types of pain are often dismissed as indigestion, heartburn or even a pulled muscle Why the difference in the sexes? Studies confirm that heart disease in women can differ from men in that it doesn’t often involve an obvious blockage in one of the big arteries. Instead, plaque develops throughout the smaller arteries to the heart, cutting off blood flow more slowly resulting in more subtle symptoms.

DEBATE

HOW TO MAKE THE BEST CHOICES WHEN IT COMES TO YOUR FAMILY’S ORAL HEALTH. BY DR. TARRA ELLIOT

W

ith so many toothpastes promising everything from whiter teeth to cavity prevention it can be overwhelming to decide which brand is best for you and your family. Here’s what you need to know before you make your next toothpaste purchase. AVOID UNNECESSARY INGREDIENTS Regardless of what your toothpaste promises on the label, it’s important to read all ingredients before making your purchase. Too many toothpastes – even ones that claim to be natural – are packed with unnecessary ingredients that you don’t need and that could even be harmful to your teeth and your overall health. One of the most unnecessary ingredients in toothpaste is Triclosan. Triclosan is an antibacterial chemical present in many soaps, sanitizers and some toothpastes. Some states in the U.S. have started to ban the chemical and many companies are starting to exclude it from their products due to it potential negative side effects. Not only can taking too many antibacterial chemicals build up bacterial resistance, experts are unsure 68

VIVAMAGONLINE.COM / FALL 2014

of the long-term effects of using antibacterial agents such as Triclosan. Studies have linked Tricolsan to cancer cell growth and Tricolsan has been found to disrupt development in animals. While the amount of Tricolsan in toothpaste isn’t likely significant enough to be cancer causing, it’s good to limit Triclosan wherever possible as the negative effects are likely cumulative and there is no proven benefit for oral care. If you are looking for antibacterial effects from your toothpaste opt for natural ingredients instead such as oregano or tea tree oil, which offer the benefits without any risk. Most traditional toothpastes also contain sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), a sudsing agent used in toothpaste, soap and shampoo to make the products foam and disperse the ingredients. While it’s not proven to be dangerous, it has been linked to negative oral side effects such as burning sensation, desquamative or “peeling” gums and canker sores, particularly in people who are prone to them. It is tough to find any toothpaste without SLS, even natural toothpastes. However, SLS has a long history of safe use and checking the label will ensure that it is used only at the levels needed to deliver its intended purpose and be safe.

Anti-tartar toothpastes may contain sodium pyrophosphates that are also linked to the above side effects. Whitening toothpastes contain abrasive chemicals that can actually harm teeth and should be avoided for every day use. They are meant to remove extrinsic or surface stains caused by recent red wine, coffee, tobacco or other staining food item consumption through an abrasive action. Over time, this will wear down your tooth enamel, and may cause your teeth to become more sensitive by decreasing the protective barrier around your teeth. They are fine to use once or twice a week, but you should choose a more basic toothpaste with minimal added chemicals for every day use. DO YOU NEED FLUORIDE? There is a lot of debate surrounding fluoride and there are pros and cons to both sides. On one hand, there are benefits to using some fluoride – especially in children. Fluoride makes developing teeth more resistant to tooth decay and is proven to reduce the risk of cavities. Therefore, pregnant women and children under the age of 16 are advised to have some fluoride to strengthen developing teeth and toothpaste is often the easiest form. The amount of fluoride in toothpaste is optimized to provide cavity prevention. However, strict adherence to recommendations of not swallowing and using it in small amounts should be followed to prevent the harmful effects that fluoride is often known for. This is the opposite side of the debate: too much fluoride can actually have a negative impact on the chemical structure of your teeth, resulting in white spots or, in extreme cases, brown mottled enamel. Ingestion of large quantities of fluoride can also cause brittle bones. However, with the small amount present in toothpastes, the systemic risk is minimal to none if instructions are followed. This is why it is important for children to learn to spit before using fluoride-enhanced products so they are not swallowing them. It is important to remember that fluoride is present in most tap water so drinking water and getting regular fluoride treatments at your dental visits may be sufficient for some people. Once teeth have fully developed (about age 16), fluoride is not necessary if you have exemplary oral hygiene and visit your 70

BRUSHING BASICS ❱ Brush two or three times a day, for two minutes each time. ❱ Electric toothbrushes are often more effective than a manual toothbrush and many come with a timer and pressure gauge. ❱ Floss every night, preferably before you brush. ❱ The evening clean is the most important to rid the buildup from the day and also because saliva acts as a natural buffering agent and saliva production decreases at night. ❱ Visit your dentist every six months, or if you are prone to gum issues or cavities every three to four months.

dentist on a regular basis. However, if you have a diet high in demineralizing agents such as acidic drinks and sugar, or you are prone to cavities, fluoride is advised to promote remineralization and to keep your enamel strong. In addition, as gums start to recede and roots are exposed, fluoride will help prevent this softer area of the tooth from demineralizing and lessen the risk of cavities and reduce root or tooth sensitivity. JUST BRUSH The primary benefit of brushing your teeth comes from the mechanical action of removing plaque and disrupting the bacterial colonies, not the actual toothpaste. Proper brushing technique can actually supersede the need for any type of toothpaste. However, most people like the breath freshening quality of toothpastes and fluoride does offer many benefits. Other than that, you don’t need a lot of extras. Simple and natural are your best options. VM

ancy O’Dell has a mile long to-do list and it’s not even 9:00 a.m. yet. “I have a list that’s at number 72 of things to do – I kid you not,” says the Entertainment Tonight co-anchor, wife and mom of three. “Actually the list is a way for me to have peace of mind that I won’t forget something I need to do.” Balancing her co-hosting duties with her family responsibilities – soccer games, tennis lessons, getting dinner on the table – doesn’t leave O’Dell with much time to relax. Luckily she thrives on the chaos. “Friends tease me that I wouldn’t know what to do if I didn’t feel I was busy, busy, busy all the time – and that’s pretty much true,” says O’Dell. “I’ve always pushed myself,” reflects the South Carolina native who was a straight-A student throughout school. However the busy working mom has learned how to slow down a little and pamper herself along the way. “I’ve learned to go to bed on my daughter’s schedule, but she needs more sleep than I do so I get up at 4:30 a.m. and that’s my `me time.’ O’Dell relishes her 45-minute early morning treadmill runs and quick time to catch up on work. “Then I’ll have my morning cup of coffee with my husband and we catch up on things. At 6:30 a.m. I’m in the shower getting ready for work.” PUTTING HEALTH FIRST High cholesterol runs in O’Dell’s family. The 48-year-old works to keep her levels in check by eating early-morning oatmeal, exercising and taking supplements such as red yeast rice, flaxseed, fish oil, pre-natal vitamins (even though her youngest Ashby is six), and fibre supplements. Growing up on southern fried foods O’Dell admits she still indulges in the occasional French fry and fried chicken. She also cheats a little in an attempt to get fried taste with a healthy twist. “I’ll dip chicken in egg whites and then coat it in corn flakes to re-create fried chicken,” she says. “I also found that if you take olive oil and sear chicken breasts in it they taste pretty good.” When it comes to snacking her favourite healthy treats include: almonds, sliced peeled apples, avocadoes and Usana bars. “Fortunately I’m not a big sweet eater,” says O’Dell.

IT’S THE LITTLE THINGS THAT COUNT To keep her toned tummy flat, O’Dell fits in extra fitness whenever she can. “The other day I’m on the floor playing board games with the family. I found myself lying with my head back and thought: `Well, it’s not my turn, why not do some crunches?’” It’s the extra little efforts that pay off in a major way. “I accidentally left my heart-rate monitor on after doing some running and my daughter wanted to play outside. So we went outside and I actually burned more calories playing tag with her than working out with my trainer.” Kids and an active life keep you fit. Ultimately, O’Dell says that balancing career and family help empower her as a woman. “Somehow I manage. It’s crazy difficult and I struggle sometimes with that. However I have to say I’m a very content, loving and one happy woman.” VM

SLEEPLESS IN CANADA WE’RE A SLEEP DEPRIVED NATION. THE AVERAGE CANADIAN GETS CLOSE TO 90 MINUTES LESS SLEEP THAN 50 YEARS AGO. HERE’S WHY IT’S IMPACTING OUR HEALTH AND HOW TO GET MORE ZZZZ’S. BY NANCY RIPTON

n today’s busy society, it’s almost a badge of honour to claim that you get too little sleep. In fact, the average person sleeps 60 to 90 minutes less than they did 50 years ago. Thirtyfive to 40 percent of the North American adult population has problems with falling asleep or with daytime sleepiness. “It’s a big problem,” says Lawrence Epstein, MD, regional director for the Harvard-affiliated Sleep Health Centers and author of The Harvard Medical School Guide to a Good Night’s Sleep. “People don’t think sleep is important because we can get by with less, but we’re putting our health at risk.” THE POWERS OF A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP “We spend roughly a third of our life asleep–obviously it has a crucial function,” says Epstein. Sleep has important roles in repair, restoration and memory. “Lack of sleep hinders cognitive function,” says Epstein. A recent study found that going for 24 hours without sleep had the same negative impact on performance as a blood alcohol of 0.1 (0.08 is legally drunk in the United States). 74

VIVAMAGONLINE.COM / FALL 2014

Sleep deprivation has a similar effect on physical performance. Not only does it reduce energy levels and motivation to be active, but lack of sleep has a huge impact on performance. A study at Stanford University looked at players on their varsity basketball team. Researchers split the players into two teams. One team received extra sleep and one had their sleep curtailed. The players who received more sleep had faster sprint times. Their shooting accuracy also improved greatly, with free throw percentage increasing by nine percent and three-point field goal percentage increasing by 9.2 percent. Studies have proven that sleep is essential to both mental and physical performance, but what’s even more interesting is that our brains never get used to sleep deprivation. “The less sleep we get at night and the longer we go without sleep the worse our performance becomes,” says Epstein. The effects of sleep deprivation are cumulative–they never plateau. However, when you ask someone if they are sleep deprived, initially they will say yes. But as they become more and more chronically sleep deprived,

they will start to say that they’re not sleepy. Their performance is impaired but after a while they no longer realize the negative effect sleep is having on their mind and their body. “We are not good judges of how we’re being affected by lack of sleep,” says Epstein. SLEEP AND YOUR HEALTH Sleep is also essential for good health–both long and short term. A new study conducted by the Erasmus University Rotterdam in the Netherlands and the University of Surrey in the United Kingdom found that depriving your body of sleep takes the same toll on your immune system as stress. “Sleep helps sustain the functioning of the immune system,” says lead researcher Katrin Ackermann. Without it you are at an increased risk for a host of ailments including diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease. But it’s not just chronic sleep loss you have to worry about. Ever wonder why you’re more likely to get the flu after a busy session at work or a trip with lots of late nights? Ackermann’s study found that after just 24 hours with no sleep, detrimental changes in the body were already starting to occur. Granulocytes are a type of white blood cells that play an essential role in immunity. When we don’t get enough sleep, granulocyte counts jump during the night, indicating a direct immune response by the body. “Granulocytes react immediately to sleep deprivation and just one night of sleep loss can affect the immune system,” says Ackermann. Future studies need to be done in order to understand the full implications of the increase in granulocyte count resulting from sleep deprivation, but increased granulocyte counts have been shown to increase the risk of cardiovascular mortality. WHY LESS SLEEP CAN EQUAL MORE WEIGHT Research has shown that people who habitually sleep less than six hours per night are much more likely to be overweight, while those who sleep eight hours are least likely. Why? When you sleep, your body secretes hormones that help control appetite, energy metabolism, and glucose processing. Sleeping too little sleep (or sleeping at irregular times) upsets the balance of these hormones. A recent study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that poor sleep can increase cortisol levels. Disruption of cortisol has proven to be a large factor in weight gain, particularly around the midsection. (It also increases blood pressure levels.) Poor sleep increases insulin secretion. “After just one or two days of no sleep, the body is unable to properly metabolize glucose,” says Ackermann. Insulin is a hormone that regulates glucose processing and promotes fat storage; higher levels of insulin are associated with weight gain and also increase the risk factor for diabetes. Insufficient sleep is also associated with lower levels of leptin (a hormone that alerts the brain that it has had enough food) and higher levels of ghrelin (a biochemical that stimulates appetite). As a result, poor sleep may result in food cravings even after you have eaten an adequate number of calories. When you’re tired, you will be more likely to eat unhealthy foods to help satisfy that your cravings or give you a quick energy boost.

SEX AND THE SLEEP DEPRIVED If you still need another reason to get your zzz’s, how about the impact it will have on your sex life? A recent study of college students found that adequate sleep increased sexual desire and physiological desires,” says Paul Loprinzi, Ph.D., an assistant professor at Bellarmine University in Louisville, KY. Adequate sleep and exercise can also increase blood flow to the erotic organs. HOW MUCH SLEEP DO YOU NEED? According to the National Sleep Association, most people need seven to nine hours of sleep a night. That being said, quality of sleep is a factor, as is genetics. “Individuals vary greatly in the amount of sleep that they need,” says Ackermann. Most people need 7.5 to eight hours a night. Some need nine to 10 and a lucky few can get by on as little as four to five hours per night. However, Epstein warns that more people probably think they can get by on five hours a night than actually can. ARE YOU GETTING ENOUGH SLEEP? “If you’re waking up and are refreshed and ready for the day, I think that’s the best sign that you have had a good and sufficient night’s sleep,” says Ackermann. “If you feel tired during the day and have problems concentrating at work or school, this could be a sign that you did not get enough rest.” Since people often underestimate the amount of sleep they need, Epstein suggests giving yourself a little test the next time you have some time off. “Next time you’re on vacation for a week, go to bed each night and sleep as long as can,” says Epstein. At first you will find that you sleep a lot–your body is playing catch up. But by the end of the week, you’ll be waking up earlier and feeling alert and refreshed. Whatever you sleep on the last night of your vacation is how much sleep you need.” DO SLEEP NEEDS CHANGE? As newborns, we sleep almost all the time. Throughout childhood, the amount of sleep we need drops off. There’s another bump during adolescence, when a lot of growth and development occurs during sleep, but after that sleeps needs pretty much stay the same. “We continue to have same sleep needs even as we get older,” says Epstein. The only difference is that it gets harder for some people to get in a continuous block of sleep. “It can take longer to get the same amount of sleep.” TAKING BACK THE NIGHT If you have one or two nights without much sleep, it can actually take you more than a few good nights of good sleep to catch up. A recent study demonstrated that following one night of sleep deprivation the levels of granulocytes had still not returned to baseline levels after one night of recovery sleep. “Instead an extended sleep period of 10 hours was required,” says Ackermann. This result suggests that it is not sufficient merely to gain back the hours of sleep that have been missed by having a good night’s sleep. You may need some extra zzz’s. That doesn’t necessarily mean sleeping in until 10:00 am. “You don’t need to recover all your sleep in single block,” says Epstein. If you’re having trouble sleeping at night, an afternoon siesta can help you catch up. A BETTER NIGHT’S SLEEP The first step to making sure you’re well rested is to make sleep a priority. “You have to realize sleep’s importance in terms of good functioning and healthy living, and make time for it,” says Epstein. There are a few other basics that will help you awake more rested: 1 | Eat well and exercise People with a healthy lifestyle, tend to have better sleep. A recent study published in Mental Health and Physical Activity found that 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity a week provides a 65 percent improvement in quality of sleep. People also said they felt less sleepy during the day, compared to those with less physical activity. Experts aren’t sure why but it may have something to do with the temperature down regulation theory. “Core body temperature drops slightly when we go to sleep,” says Loprinzi, a lead researcher on the study. Exercise appears to prime the body for a temperature drop at nighttime by increasing certain hormone levels associated with core body temperature. Healthy eating is also a key factor in quality of sleep. Research presented at the Annual Meeting of the Society for the Study of Ingestive Behavior (SSIB) found that eating a diet high in fat reduces sleep quality by reducing orexin sensitivity. 2 | Create good sleep habits When it comes to feeling well rested and energetic, good sleep habits are essential. This includes going to bed in an area that is conducive to good sleep. “Your sleep environment should be dark, quiet, and a comfortable temperature,” says Epstein. Look for sleep saboteurs such as medications, caffeine and alcohol that can rob you of a good night’s sleep. Even if you don’t think it affects you, avoid caffeine and alcohol for at least four hours before

you go to bed. Caffeine is a stimulant and its effects last for four to seven hours. That cup of coffee with dinner could keep you up at night. And even though alcohol initially acts as a mild sedative, as alcohol levels drop in your system it actually stimulates parts of the brain that cause arousal leading to awakenings and sleep problems later in the evening. “A glass of wine with dinner is fine, but after that alcohol is not great for sleep. Lastly, aim to make it to bed at the same time each night and wake at the same time each morning. “The body thrives on consistency and regularity,” says Epstein. Our body is programmed on a circadian rhythm, which is based on exposure to light. The same way your body can be thrown off when you travel to a different time zone, it can be thrown off if you go to sleep at 10:00 pm one night and 2:00 am another. “You need to take advantage of your body’s inherent pattern,” says Epstein. 3 | Try Natural Solutions A. Magnesium plays an important role in muscle relaxation and the deactivation of adrenaline. It is also vital for the function of GABA receptors – a calming neurotransmitter that the brain requires to switch off and relax. Insufficient magnesium makes it very difficult to get a good night’s rest. B. Melatonin can be helpful, given the correct dosage, method and if it is taken at the right time of day. However, since it is a hormone you should speak with a naturopath first to make sure you are actually deficient and that you are getting the correct dose. Even better is 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP), a precursor to serotonin. Optimal levels of serotonin produce a calming effect on people and make it easier to sleep while boosting dream recall. C. Reishi mushroom is a fungus that boosts the immune system, helps manage stress and can help with insomnia and other sleep issues. It is ideal for battling chronic fatigue syndrome. 4 | Seek help If all else fails seek help. There may be an easy way to fix what’s keeping you up at night. VM

NATURAL IMMUNITY BOOSTERS BACK TO SCHOOL DOESN’T HAVE TO MEAN BACK TO THE DOCTOR. HERE’S HOW TO KEEP YOUR FAMILY HEALTHY THIS YEAR.

BY DR. JOYCE JOHNSON, ND

ow that your kids are back at school and spending more time indoors the amount of disease-producing organisms (including bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites) they’ll be exposed to will increase dramatically. That doesn't mean your child will get sick though. A strong immune system will provide your child with the natural defenses she needs to ward off disease. A weakened immune system, however, makes your child more susceptible to colds, flu and other problems. Here’s how to boost your child’s immunity naturally and keep her a healthy start this school year.

GET SUFFICIENT SLEEP Your child's body regenerates, repairs and renews itself while sleeping. Insufficient rest increases the chance of illness. Infants under six months of age need up to 20 hours of sleep per day. While toddlers need up 11 to 15 hours of daily sleep. School aged children should aim for 10 to 12 hours a night. Poor sleep quality and insufficient sleep hampers the production of interleukin-1, a protein produced by certain cells to help prevent germs from entering the body through the skin.

GIVE YOUR BABY A HEALTHY START If you still have infants, breastfeeding now can help ward off illness later in life. Research shows that breast fed babies experience fewer infections than formula fed babies. The nutrients in breast milk are vital in building your baby's immunity and protecting against disease for life.

LAUGH TOGETHER Studies shown that laughter can boost immune system function by increasing antibody-producing cells and helping T-cells perform more effectively. Laughter has also been shown to reduce the levels of stress hormones while increasing feel-good hormones such as endorphins.

EAT A HEALTHY DIET, RICH IN NATURAL FOODS Ensure your child’s diet has a variety of whole foods (preferably organic) including fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts, seeds, beans and whole grains. Nutritional deficiencies make it easier for your child to be susceptible to viruses and bacteria.

AVOID CIGARETTE SMOKE Cigarette smoke has roughly 4,000 different chemicals that can weaken the immune system. Children exposed to secondhand smoke are more prone to ear infections, coughs, colds, bronchitis and other respiratory problems.

IMMUNITY BOOSTING SUPPLEMENTS Omega-3 Fatty Acids Supplementing your child’s diet with omega-3 fatty acids will establish healthy cell membranes that prevent inflammation. Omega-3 fatty acids also boost resistance to toxins and reduce the risk of being attacked by pathogens. Vitamin E Sufficient dietary vitamin E ensures that fatty acids are maintained at optimal efficiency once they are absorbed into cells. Vitamin E also has anti-inflammatory effects and increases resistance to infection. Vitamin A Vitamin A is an immune booster because white blood cells, T-lymphocytes, and every cell in the mucosal barriers of the respiratory, digestive and urinary tracts require vitamin A. Zinc Zinc stimulates immune function, prevents infections and acts as a cofactor in many enzyme reactions, including

the creation of antioxidants. Insufficient zinc can also impair taste buds and result in your child being a picky eater and eating a less healthy diet. Vitamin C has anti-inflammatory effects, antioxidant activity and rounds out the immune system. Probiotics The presence of good bacteria inhibits the colonization of pathogenic bacteria and reduces over-stimulation of the immune system. In 1994 the World Health Organization deemed probiotics to be the next-most important immune defense system, when commonly prescribed antibiotics are rendered useless by antibiotic resistance. Vitamin D Vitamin D stimulates the immune system and disease-fighting cells. Research has demonstrated that Vitamin D deficiency predisposes children to respiratory infections. VM

Defy Gravity JUST BECAUSE THE TEMPERATURE’S DROPPING DOESN’T MEAN IT’S TIME FOR YOUR BODY TO GO INTO HIDING. TRY THESE FIVE BUTT-LIFTING MOVES CREATED BY MAUREEN HAGAN, VICE PRESIDENT OF OPERATIONS AT GOODLIFE FITNESS. THE WORKOUT ISOLATES THE GLUTES FIRST TO PREEXHAUST THE TARGETED MUSCLES. “IF YOU DO COMPLEX MOVES LIKE SQUATS OR LUNGES FIRST YOU LIMIT YOUR GLUTE WORK BECAUSE THE SURROUNDING MUSCLES BECOME FATIGUED FIRST,” SAYS HAGAN. SHE FINISHES THE WORKOUT BY INTEGRATING THE GLUTES INTO FULL-BODY MOVEMENTS TO OVERLOAD THE MUSCLE AND TARGET IT FROM ALL ANGLES. TRY IT TWO OR THREE TIMES A WEEK AND WATCH YOUR GLUTES TRANSFORM. BY NANCY RIPTON

Defy Gravity

GLUTE BRIDGE Why it’s important: It’s a great way to turn on the glute muscles. Because this move works only one body part, you can really focus on the glutes and feel the specific muscles working. Plus, elevating your legs increases the intensity by forcing you to work against gravity. How to: Lie on your back with your arms alongside your torso, palms facing downward. Place your heels hip-width apart on a stability ball. Your legs are straight. With your shoulders relaxed and your stomach contracting inward, squeeze your glutes. Then, maintaining a neutral spine, lift your hips off the floor for two counts. Pause when there is a straight line from your toes to your neck. After a few seconds, slowly lower your butt to the floor on the count of four. Repeat for two sets of 15 repetitions. BENT-KNEE KICK Why it’s important: To define the glutes at the hip and give separation between the cheek and the thigh. How to: With knees hip-width apart on a mat, place your forearms on the mat with your elbows shoulder-width apart and fingers touching. Focus your eyes downward between your forearms and pull your shoulder blades gently inward toward the spine. With your right foot flexed and knee bent, lift your right leg until the knee is in line with the hips. Squeeze your glutes and push the right heel toward the ceiling. Go as high as possible without arching back your back. Hold for a few seconds then lower to parallel for the count of four. Repeat for eight to 12 repetitions and switch sides. Do three sets.

Hagan. “Do this move toward the end of your workout and you will push yourself to get results.” How to: Stand on a step or low bench with your feet hip-distance apart and hands on hips. Take a long step back with your right foot until your toe finds the floor. With your body tall, lower your hips straight down until your right shin is level with the ground. Hold for a few seconds, then push up through left heel to return to the start position. Repeat on the opposite side and continue to alternate sides for 20 lunges. Take a 30 second break and repeat. SIDE SQUAT WITH RESISTANCE Why it’s important: It targets the saddlebag area and gets rid of all the jiggly parts on the side of our upper thighs. How to: Wrap a resistance band around your shins and stand with your feet just wider than hip-distance. Your feet are turned out in the 10:00 and 2:00 position and there should be some tension in the band before you start. With your hands on hips, take a big step to the right by dragging your foot along the floor (double your starting stance). Shift your body weight into your heels, and slowly sit back into a squatting position. Go as low as you comfortably can and hold for a few seconds before straightening legs. Slide your right foot over to return to the start position. Repeat on the other side and continue back and forth for 30 repetitions. VM

CARDIO IS KEY The secret to killer glutes is to lose weight by doing two or three cardio workouts a week. Focus on

LUNGE AND LIFT Why it’s important: To work both butt cheeks at the same time – one as a stabilizer and one as a mover. This is crucial for preventing knee pain and boosting overall strength. It eliminates the “shuffle” stride that comes with aging. How to: Stand with feet hip-distance apart and hands on hips. Take a long stride back with the right leg. Bend your front knee bent slightly (about 30 degrees) and keep your back leg straight with the heel off ground. Lean forward slightly from the hips to get into starting position. Push up through the front foot to straighten the left leg as you lift the right foot off the floor. Lift as high as possible, keeping your back in a straight line. Hold right leg up for a few seconds, then slowly lower. Repeat for 10 times, then switch sides. Do two sets on each leg. POWER LUNGE Why it’s important: Weight-bearing exercises are needed to overload the glute muscle. “People get results with a personal trainer because they are forced to overload their muscles,” says 82

aerobic activities like incline treadmill, inline skating, and stairclimbing that really target the tush.

GOOD

ho says life can’t get better after 40? At 46 Kristin Chenoweth is an Emmy and Tony winner who transitions effortlessly between stage, television, film and singing performances. Some high notes include singing for President Obama, entertaining England’s Royal Family and, most recently, singing to the SRO theatre company at Carnegie Hall. Chenoweth is reveling in a career that began at the age of 12 when she performed “Four Feet Eleven” (a song made famous by contemporary Christian singer Evie) at a Southern Baptist Convention. Ironically the actor is the same height as those belted out in her breakout lyrics. “Some people freak out when they hear I’m only 4-foot-11,” says Chenoweth. Tiny has always described the small-boned starlet who currently weighs just 89 pounds. “When I’m on Broadway I should be around 95 pounds, however when I’m doing TV or film this weight is ideal for me.” On more than one occasion, people have not taken Chenoweth seriously because of her small stature. The actor holds a Master’s Degree in opera performance and can talk anyone’s ear of when it comes to current events, but there will always be people who assume she’s a blonde ditz. “I get ‘Oh she’s blonde, she has an interesting speaking voice, but she has no brain,” says Chenoweth. “I like proving people wrong.” HEALTH ISSUES ALONG THE WAY Adopted when she was just five days old, Chenoweth was raised in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. She learned from her parents that the key to longevity is keeping a healthy mind, being kind to yourself and accepting who you are and where you’re at. It also means seeking help when you need it. Chenoweth has been plagued with migraine headaches for years. “About seven years ago I thought I would have to retire because spotlights and flashing lights are everywhere in my business and being on stage can trigger a migraine.” Then her dermatologist suggested Botox. “At first I said: ‘No way. I make a living through my facial expressions.” Then my doctor said I wouldn’t have a living if I couldn’t get over my weekly migraines.” Now twice yearly injections provide substantial relief. “I haven’t had a full-blown headache since Botox.” 86

Chenoweth also suffers from Meniere’s Disease, an inner ear disorder that affects balance and hearing. It causes extra liquid or congestion that gravitates to the inner ear and can cause vertigo. Flying exacerbates the problem (and can also cause migraines) so Chenoweth tries to say grounded whenever possible. “When I have to sing somewhere I drive or take the train whenever I can.” The actor also avoids salt. “I follow a low-sodium diet because it helps manage Meniere’s Disease,” says Chenoweth. The actor loves to snack on potato chips and found that Terra low sodium chips are a great alternative. She has researched other foods so that she can avoid hidden sodium. “Would you think white rice had a lot of sodium in it? It does,” notes Chenoweth. Other big foods to avoid include Chinese food and soups. Additionally, she shuns caffeine, chocolate and alcohol – most of the time. “If I want a Snickers, I’ll have a mini Snickers. I’ll try and stop there. Everything in moderation, however I still want to live life.” Chenoweth tries to eat natural foods without added chemicals whenever possible. Using my body as a singer, as a dancer, I have to be healthy – I must! ” ALWAYS LOOK ON THE BRIGHT SIDE The petite diva who has parlayed her innate strength, resounding singing voice and acting abilities into a powerhouse career has proven that her staying power is a result of finding the upside in even the most stressful moments. “Managing it all is a constant challenge,” she admits. “Even good things and good stress can be stressful. I just try to remember to take deep breaths.”

Chenoweth also believes hugging her Maltese Madeline Kahn helps reduce stress. “I love her to death,” she says. “There’s almost nothing better than hugging her.” Also, every evening, Chenoweth soaks in a hot bath sprinkled with eucalyptus oil for stress reduction. “That’s my quiet time and the soothing scent and time spent there goes through my entire body. It gives me a chance to unwind and have a few moments to myself, which I think we all need. Then we can hear what we need to hear. I can always tell when I haven’t had enough alone time because things get jumbled up in my brain. Reflection and quiet time also help my creativity to think about what I want to do.”

self-involved, I’m constantly reminding myself of the gifts that I’ve been given.” When Chenoweth was injured on the set of The Good Wife a few years ago and it resulted in relinquishing her role, the actor asked herself why me. “My mom said: ‘Why not you? Things happen to you just like everyone else.’” Equality is so important to Chenoweth. One of my dreams is to see a world where tolerance and acceptance are commonplace,” she says. “We’re getting there.” IT’S ABOUT A SONG In addition to her on-screen performances, including the upcoming The Boy Next Door with Jennifer Lopez, Chenoweth continues to tour. She performs her most memorable songs and Broadway tunes including music from Wicked where she originated the role of Glinda The Good Witch, Glee and Promises, Promises. Her own musical preferences run the gamut from classical to opera. “I think listening to music is an important part of life,” says Chenoweth. “Even if it’s in the car, I enjoy it because it’s time for myself – that pleases me.” Melody and song are so much a part of Chenoweth’s life that she formed a charity partnership with the Broken Arrow Performing Arts Center with an aim to bring the world of visual and performing arts to Broken Arrow. “They named a theater after me,” she says incredulously. “I have a Master Class there now to raise funds for kids to play in a band.” Having accomplished so much in her lifetime, Kristin says she still has one ultimate goal. “I want to do a live album.” Something tells us, she’ll have no problem reaching any goal she sets her mind to. VM

REFLECTION AND QUIET BOOST CREATIVITY.

NATURAL REMEDIES Sustaining multiple dancing injuries over the span of her busy career, Chenoweth has been a fan of Tiger Balm for treating slipped discs. “On Broadway, we call it instant warm-up and it really helps.” She also supplements with a probiotic and Earth Made multi-vitamin at night. “My doctor suggested taking these at night so I wouldn’t experience an upset stomach. It seems to be working,” she says. Other alternative therapies include acupuncture and physical therapy. “It’s the simple things in life that can help more than prescriptions.”

SPIRITUAL HEALING The self- described “happy, loyal musician” was raised in the Baptist church. “One of life’s most important lessons is to learn and continue to learn to be grateful and thankful for what we have in life. In an industry where it’s very self-promotional and

PRODUCED BY: NANCY RIPTON • PHOTOGRAPHY BY: STEVE KRUG FOOD STYLING BY: LASHA ANDRUSHKO • PROP STYLING BY: CATHERINE DOHERTY

In our busy world of working late, kid’s hockey games and dance classes, and squeezing in a little time at the gym eating healthy can often lose out. Take out or pre-made foods are an easier fit in a busy life. However, if processed foods takeover mealtime, our health will pay the price. The key is to find healthy meals that are easy to make. We’ve rounded up four of our favourite all-natural meals. Whether it’s a slow cooker favourite that can cook while you’re at work, or a meal in minutes each of these dinners are high in nutrients and low on time spent in the kitchen. TIME-SAVING TIP: To save day of prep time chop veggies the night before.

Occupation: Television host and news anchor. What’s your secret food vice? Chocolate chip cookies – especially my mother-in-law’s homemade ones. What is your number one comfort food? Vegetarian chili. What is your biggest food challenge? Staying away from salty foods. After a long day nothing beats salty treats like chips. What keeps you eating a balanced diet? My biggest motivator for eating well is knowing how it makes me feel. When I eat clean I think better, sleep better and have less bloating. Any dislikes? I’m vegetarian and haven’t eaten meat since I was 16. I do, however, eat fish and seafood. What must you always have in your fridge? My favourite go-to snack is vanilla Greek yogurt. It’s filling, delicious and nutritious. What are some of your go-to meals? My favourite breakfast food is oatmeal. I like protein-packed salads for lunch and I’ll eat Caprese salad anytime, anywhere. Strangest food you’ve tried? Raw eel. What’s your favourite winter dish? Mom’s veggie won ton soup. What is your favourite meal to make for guests in your home? Baked salmon with fresh dill and steamed asparagus.

What is your favourite ingredient to cook with and why? I love baby spinach. I use it in salads and smoothies. I’m also having a love affair with avocado. I eat it with just about everything – sandwiches, salads and dips. What have you been busy with over the last year? Having a baby and hosting The Social. Marquesa is almost five months old now and I went back to work when she was three months. It’s been a busy few months adjusting to being a working mom, but I’m loving every second of it!

TO MAKE IT TO THE TOP, EVERYTHING ABOUT YOUR TRAINING, NUTRITION AND LIFESTYLE HAS TO BE OPTIMAL. HERE’S A LOOK AT CANADIAN SPEED SKATER VALÉRIE MALTAIS’ TRAINING REGIME AND HOW BIO-K+ PROBIOTICS HELPED HER GET A HANDLE ON HER DIGESTIVE ISSUES.

n Canada, it’s nothing for young kids to don hockey or figure skates as soon as they can walk. However, strapping on speed skates at age six is quite rare. In fact, the average age for Olympians to start speed skating is 12. However, Valérie Maltais knew early what sport was right for her. “I was so afraid being on those long blades at first,” recalls Maltais (now 24) of her first experience on speed skates. “I had competed in figure skating before then, but racing was completely different.” What made the La Baie, Quebec native want to make the switch to speed skating so early? “I remember telling my mother that I was more interested in racing on ice than dancing on the ice.” Since that initial lace up at age six, Maltais has accumulated a long list of accolades. The first big one was in 2009 at the Short Track World Junior Championships where she won a bronze in the 500 meters and silver in the women’s team relay. Her first big gold game at age 22, when Maltais won the 1,000-meter event at the 2012 World Cup in Montreal (a city she now calls home). Maltais has competed for Team Canada in both the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver and the 2014 Sochi Games; she won her first Olympic medal in the latter – a silver in the women’s team relay and she took sixth place in the 1,000 meter solo event, also setting a new Olympic record in the heats. Maltais has been named Speed Skating Canada’s Female Short Track Athlete of the Year for the past three years. “You have to think as a team,” says Maltais of her success. “We girls know what to do and what we need to do.” GOLD-MEDAL TRAINING Getting to the top of the short track speed skating world requires a rigorous training regime. Six days a week Maltais begins her day with a 30-minute warm up of running and stretching and then takes to the ice for two hours. She takes a break for lunch and then returns to the ice for another two- or three-hour afternoon session. “It’s a pretty intense workout,” admits the fivefoot-four athlete. This summer she decided to mix things up a bit and added inline speed skating to her routine. “It was fun being outside instead of being in an indoor ice rink all summer. I loved the energy of being in the sun,” says Maltais. GETTING HER HEALTH IN CHECK To maintain an elite level in her sport, Maltais had to address her digestive problems and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) symptoms. She now takes Bio-K+ probiotics as a daily supplement and has had such amazing results that she became a spokesperson for the company in 2012. “I was taking another brand of probiotic

/

P R O F I L E

before Bio-K+, and when I switched to Bio-K+ I could feel the difference right away,” says Maltais. “I had always been slightly lactose intolerant, and suffered from bloating and had symptoms of IBS.” Since starting to take Bio-K+ probiotics, Maltais’ symptoms have disappeared. “My overall health is just so much better and my life is more manageable now.” Maltais can even have small amounts of milk or ice cream. “Just not too much,” she adds. “I usually drink almond or soy milk, but when I’m traveling I don’t want to be real picky so I will have a little regular milk. When on the road, Maltais takes a Bio-K+ probiotic capsule. When she’s at home, however, she prefers the fermented soy probiotic. “I like the liquid type that looks like yogurt,” says Maltais. Two years ago, Maltais also began eating gluten free after tracking her food intake and noticing that she felt more energized, less bloated, and had better digestion when she omitted gluten from her diet. “I’m not celiac, however I do control my gluten because my body is sensitive to it.” Maltais also supplements with vitamin B-12, iron and vitamin D. PERFECT BALANCE Maltais says she feels challenged on a regular basis to have her mind, body and spirit in perfect harmony at all times. “Living a balanced lifestyle is hard to achieve 100 per cent of the time,” says Maltais. “When I’m training two times a day, I sometimes lose my motivation in the afternoon. Yet somehow I have to achieve my training properly and ensure I’m making decisions in terms of my sport.” Maltais has to focus on her personal decisions as well. “Drinking a glass of wine at night with dinner helps me unwind a bit,” she says. “Everything in moderation.” VM FALL 2014 / VIVAMAGONLINE.COM

isten to your space and see it with fresh eyes this fall. Experiment with adding a bit of personality and colour here and there. Worry more about how you love it and how it feels, than how it compares to a magazine. Your accessories and your home should reflect your personality. Recently, I was at a client’s to discuss design plans for the new entryway of her home. While walking through the living room she stopped me, picked up a small flower arrangement off a bookshelf and slid it to the other side. She asked: “Does it look better here or over there?” The truth is we can fixate on our home accessories. The retail environment mixed with design television shows focus strongly on the importance of accessorizing, layering and staying current. Long gone are the days of vintage living rooms. Today’s homeowners are progressive and savvy when updating their spaces. However they often get caught up with the little things instead of focusing on the big picture. Here are 10 tips to help update your space with budget conscious accessories that make a big impact.

CHOOSING THE BEST FOOD FOR YOUR PET WITH SO MANY PET FOODS ALL CLAIMING TO BE THE BEST AND HEALTHIEST OPTION FOR YOUR PET, CHOOSING THE RIGHT ONE CAN BE OVERWHELMING. HERE’S WHY YOU SHOULD BUY NATURAL PET FOOD AND WHY JUST LOOKING FOR THE WORD “NATURAL” ISN’T ENOUGH. BY NATASHA BAGULEY

108

efore heading out to examine your options, you need to assess the specific needs of your pet. “The first step is to talk to your veterinarian,” says Dr. Berney Pukay, an Ottawa-based veterinarian and Ontario's representative on the council of the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association. “Ask what you should be feeding this particular cat or this particular dog.” Questions you should as include: How old is your pet? How active is your pet? Does your pet have any health issues like skin allergies or kidney concerns? Is your pet at an ideal weight? Are there any specific breed concerns? A Chihuahua puppy, for example, has very different needs than a senior Great Dane. WHAT TO LOOK FOR Once you’ve established your pet’s needs, look at the products that are available. There are a lot of foods out there with labels that say “natural”

on them. Just like with human foods, however, you have to take the word with a grain of salt and look at a detailed ingredient list. Dog Food Advisor (www.dogfoodadvisor. com) is a website that has reviews on 750 dog foods (with more added all the time). Individual ingredients are examined and foods are rated using a five-star system. Top rated foods typically contain quality meat products as the first ingredients – chicken or turkey meal, fish, or deboned chicken. Also look for steel cut oats and recognizable ingredients like sweet potato, carrots, spinach, blueberries and other fruits and veggies. WHAT TO AVOID Just as you want to avoid the processed and unnatural foods in your own diet, you should do the same for your cat or dog. Avoid too many fillers, empty calories and unnecessary preservatives. Dog Food Advisor’s lowest rated foods

generally list corn as the primary ingredient, have a lower meat content or meat by products (slaughterhouse waste) and contain unnecessary additives like colouring (because face it, your pet really doesn’t care what colour his or her food is). BEYOND THE LABEL Reading labels can only take you so far. “Most of us are not nutritionists,” explains Dr. Pukay. While we may be able to recognize what ingredients are, we can’t really tell what these ingredients mean nutritionally for our pet. Instead, look at the research that has gone into developing the food. “My advice is to look for products made with quality ingredients that are manufactured by pet food companies with a proven track record,” says Mike Sagman, Editor and Creator of Dog Food Advisor. Look at the large, reputable pet food companies and see what kind of research they have done, see why they include the ingredients they do, and if they have had any recalls. Then judge to see if their claims seem reasonable. SHOULD YOU FEED YOUR PET GRAINS? There’s a big debate in the pet food industry as to whether or not dog and cat foods should include grains. The Pet Nutrition Alliance, a group of veterinary organizations teamed up to promote the importance of nutrition in the health of pets worldwide, believes grains are an important part of a balanced diet. “Grains help keep calories and fat at lower levels in pet foods and provide a good source of fiber, which promotes normal bowel function, maintains health

of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract and helps in the management of certain diseases.” Corn is the most controversial grain. Although the Nutrition Alliance deems it acceptable, others consider it a filler void of nutritional value. Therefore, a safe choice might be to stay away from the controversial corn and opt instead for grains seen as healthier options like whole oats, barley and brown rice.

CAN PETS EAT PEOPLE FOOD? While the odd snack here and there won’t hurt, pets should generally stay away from people food. “We tend to abuse letting our pets eat people food,” says Dr. Pukay. A little

PRACTICAL MATTERS You could do all the research in the world and pick the most nutrient-dense food on the market, but if your cat or dog won’t eat it, it won’t do them any good. Make sure you have a couple of nutritious choices so you can see what best suits your pet’s individual taste buds. Budget is also a concern for many people. Some of the top-of-the-line pet foods can be very expensive. This is especially true of canned foods – especially for a large dog. One option is to consider mixing a higher end food in with a mid-priced choice. The last thing to consider is availability. Our lives are busy, and picking up pet food needs to be convenient. If you can only pick it up at your vet or you have to drive half way across the city to that little specialty store it might not be the best choice. Also, if you plan on travelling with your pet, choose something widely available at common chain stores. One final important piece of advice: If you decide to make a change, switch your pet to a new food slowly, gradually mixing new food in with their existing food to prevent unnecessary stress on their GI tract. VM

bite soon becomes a full cookie, which becomes two cookies or cookies with ice cream and potato chips on the side. If you do want to share people food as a treat, there are lots of healthy choices like baby carrots, low-fat cheese, lean cooked meats, bananas, yogurt, peanut butter, pumpkin, eggs, apple, green beans, blueberries and sweet potatoes. Some people foods are dangerous, however, and should never be given to pets – even in small quantities. These include: chocolate, grapes, raisins, macadamia nuts, bread dough, garlic, onions, alcohol, caffeine and avocado.

EMMA MIDDLETON AGE 19 OCCUPATION Dietary Aide HEALTH ISSUE Poor Digestion, Constipation and Bloating SYMPTOMS Unfortunately, digestive issues run in my family. Certain food choices can irritate these symptoms even more – fried, greasy, refined and high-carbohydrate foods are usually the triggers.

MAUREEN HAW AGE 75 OCCUPATION Retired Nurse HEALTH ISSUE Arthritis SYMPTOMS I don’t have a problem with arthritis and I believe it’s due to regular intake of turmeric. My son’s had early symptoms of arthritis in their hands. HEALTH RECOMMENDATIONS Turmeric is a great antiinflammatory agent with no side effects. I recommended sprinkling a quarter of a teaspoon of turmeric on your food daily. This can be put on scrambled or fried eggs, in soup or any savory dish. Consistency is necessary for best results. RESULTS After approximately one month both my sons showed major improvement. The stiffness had gone and they no longer had to pry their hands open in the morning. We all continue to use turmeric daily to maintain healthy joints. 110

I also suffer from acne breakouts. HEALTH RECOMMENDATIONS Before I began studying and putting into practice a more holistic approach to healthcare I didn’t realize the importance of fruits and vegetables for digestive disorders. Also, probiotics are a natural way to increase the fibre and healthy gut flora in our digestive tract. I personally experienced the benefit of consuming water soaked chia seeds daily for constipation. The gel substance when you soak the seeds works as a perfect binding agent in the intestinal tract for regular bowel movements. RESULTS After implementing a routine of healthy eating along with additional digestive support, I noticed that my symptoms have drastically improved. I no longer suffer from severe abdominal pain, bloating or constipation. I notice that I do no feel heavy or weighed down after meals and my energy levels have greatly increased. I have bright, breakout-free skin!

EMMA STONE AGE 29 OCCUPATION Registered Midwife HEALTH ISSUE Highly sensitive skin SYMPTOMS My skin has always been over reactive. If a product such as a soap or moisturizer had too much scent or perfume in it, my skin responds with angry welts, redness, itching and flaking. I’d also get acne.

PLEASE CONSULT YOUR HEALTH-CARE PRACTITIONER FOR ANY HEALTH CONCERNS.

HEALTH RECOMMENDATIONS Oil is your friend! After ditching conventional beauty products, I now use a combination of oils to care for my skin, including coconut and olive oils. I wash my face with olive oil at night using something called the Oil Cleansing Method, and use coconut oil as a full-body moisturizer daily. I also stick to simple, Canadian-made sunflower oil soap. RESULTS My skin has never looked or felt better! Yes, I still get the occasional outbreak, however my skin is now soft and supple, never itchy or inflamed. I have also been able to rid my bathroom cupboard of copious products that were taking up so much space. The money I have saved from switching to a natural skin care routine is certainly an added bonus.

WENDY N. CLAWSEY AGE 39 OCCUPATION: Writer, Actor and Mother HEALTH ISSUE Concussion from ski accident Symptoms: I lived in a fog, had personality change and everything constantly spun. I suffered memory loss, confusion, constant migraines, hearing difficulties and had a pressure in my head. At first I couldn’t even walk to the living room without having to rest; now after 5.5 years I can hike 45 minutes, but I still can’t run. HEALTH RECOMMENDATIONS I woke up after two weeks of taking natural supplements and I healed more then I had in 2.5 years. The fog I was living in had lifted. Once I started to feel better I frantically started to research what else I could give my body to heal itself. I started to take Natural Calm Canada products and made many other healthy lifestyle changes. The Magnesium Chloride Liquid from Natural Calm gave me relief for my aches and pains. The Magnesium citrate powder helped me with my headaches. I also started my high fat, no chemical diet. Meditation and walking in nature also helped calm my mind from the ove stimulation of modern day life. THE RESULTS I feel like me again! The world stopped spinning and the fog lifted. My body is stronger and healthier then before the accident and although I am still working on being able to run again, I am just grateful to be able to get out and walk in nature once again. A Landmark Holiday RICH IN HISTORY, THE FAIRMONT CHÂTEAU LAURIER IS THE IDEAL PLACE TO STAY WHEN YOU VISIT CANADA’S CAPITAL.

BY NANCY RIPTON

H

istory is not often equated with a Canadian vacation. Scenery – yes. Outdoor athleticism – check again. Great cities and urban fare – you bet. However, a step back in time isn’t often something that travellers seek out when visiting the 147-year-old country. Tradition is, however, exactly what you’ll get when you stay at Ottawa’s Fairmont ChâteauLaurier. The hotel opened on June 1, 1912 and even the opening event is a historic event. The Château was the vision of Charles Melville Hays, an American who came to Canada as the General Manager of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway of Canada. Hays wanted to extend the railway to the West Coast, and build deluxe hotels in all the major cities along the way. The first stop on his plan was the nation’s capital, and Hays hired the Montreal team of Ross and Macfarlane to design the Chateau. The original design (which has been kept alive today) was a combination of French Renaissance and the neo-Gothic vertical lines of parliament buildings. Materials used included: granite blocks, white Italian marble, Indiana limestone, and copper and brass railings. The result was a château that you would expect to find in Europe, rather than Canada. Sadly, Hays didn’t live to see the hotel open. Just days before the original scheduled opening on April 26, 1912, the new president of the railway perished aboard the Titanic. He was coming back for the opening.

YOUR MODERN-DAY STAY Although the price of a stay has increased – the first guests paid just two dollars a night – much of the experience has not. You still feel as if you step back in time when you stay in one of the 429 rooms on parliament hill. Throughout renovations, the grandeur of the hotel has been maintained through the years. Upon entering the hotel lobby, guests are greeted by a bust of the hotel’s namesake Sir Wilfrid Laurier. However, it’s a piece of art that did not originally please Canada’s eighth prime minister. The liberal leader was unhappy with the nose and originally threatened not to sign the guest registry for the hotel’s opening. However, the bust was promptly repaired to his liking and he not only signed the book, but also attended the hotel’s opening. The final bust bared such a strong resemblance that an unknowing guest once commented to Laurier (when the then Prime Minister was sitting next to the bust in the lobby) that the bust looked exactly like him. While the tradition of the hotel has remained, modern amenities have been added pairing old and new in perfect unison. The hotel’s art deco pool may conjure up visions of Pierre Trudeau swimming a lap, while the modern health club and spa offer all you need to stay fit and pampered during your stay. The original health club opened in 1930 and had various, now seemingly unusual, treatments including a Scotch Shower in which guests were sprayed by alternating high powered hot and cold jets of water. The current spa offers everything from massages to manicures, and is the perfect compliment to your stay. JOIN THE HISTORIC RANKS When you stay at the Fairmont Château Laurier, you are perfectly situated to take in all the sites Ottawa has to offer. It’s next door to the country’s parliament buildings, and alongside the Rideau Canal – the world’s largest skating rink in the winter and the ideal place for a stroll or bike ride in the warmer months. It’s also close to the countries best museums and has dozens of amazing restaurants and shops within a close walk. Stay in the Châteauand you’ll also join a long list of royalty and celebrities who have stayed there during their visit to Ottawa. Pierre Elliot Trudeau lived at the hotel from 1965 to 1968, prior to moving to 24 Sussex Drive after being elected the 15th Prime Minister of Canada. Sir Winston Churchill, Queen Elizabeth, Dwight Eisenhower, Nelson Mandela, John Lennon and the Rolling Stones all made the Châteauhome during their visit. If these walls could talk. YOUR HOROSCOPE BY LOUIS ROBERT

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct.23) Librans love to spend money they don’t have. Take care, as unexpected costs may arise through the breakdown of an electronic device. Put your credit cards in a drawer and put your money in investments. Your social life is busy now so have fun and give from your heart, not your wallet.

Scorpio (Oct. 24-Nov. 21) Plans may fall apart, people get aggressive, and even inanimate objects seem to be in your way. All this is a sign you need to slow down. The stars are saying be cautious with authority figures in particular. This isn’t the time to argue with the traffic cop that you weren’t speeding, especially if you were!

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) That problem that has been lurking in the shadows comes to light. Ignoring problems will only make them worse. Generally, your courage during troubled times shines a light for the rest of us. Utilize the good energy around you and discard your fear of the unknown.

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) The era of baring it all just isn’t your thing, so where do you fit in? Your best skill is in guiding others through the harsh lessons you have already overcome. Dig into your hidden resources and you may just discover you do have a technological skill. Selfcare is important now too.

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) The stars are warning this is not the time to rattle the cage of anyone in authority above you. This autumn it would be best to keep quiet and be cooperative. You may not have done anything wrong, but misunderstandings can still arise. If you follow proper steps, make up a schedule and are disciplined things will go more your way.

Pisces (Feb. 19-Mar. 20) Early autumn finds you settling into those new places or new directions and you’re keeping pace just fine. By early October the retrograding Mercury has you back pedaling somewhat as you redistribute your resources to deal with unexpected complications. Still, you’re able to spend some wonderful time with loved ones and new partnerships may be forged.

Aries (Mar.21-Apr. 19) Autumn is the perfect time to recharge, rejuvenate and reinvent yourself Aries. You’ve had to be a whirling Dervish this year, but even a spinning top comes to rest eventually. Go to the spa, beauty salon, meditation retreat or anywhere else you can be 114

VIVAMAGONLINE.COM / FALL2014

a little pampered. You know you deserve it! The October Mercury retrograde could upset some apple carts so be prepared by re-energizing your chakra batteries before October 4th.

Taurus (Apr. 20-May 20) Take care that you don’t take on too many projects now. You’re always eager to help others, but try not to do so to your detriment. Your energy level is good and creative endeavours get a real boost in September especially. Your autumn harvest could be very fruitful and you may need to preserve some of your garden produce for future needs.

Gemini (May 21-June 21) You’re in the mood to reorganize, renovate and reconfigure so please do, especially before October ends. Don’t let minor frustrations and delays deter you from your goals. Your usual sunny disposition may annoy the more sober types in September. Just smile and walk away and show that you’re the better person.

Cancer (June 22-July 22) You really do have a lot on your plate at the moment, and unfortunately many Cancers get pretty crabby when under this much stress. Give yourself a break! Unexpected problems are a sign you need to adjust your course in a different direction perhaps?

Leo (July 23-Aug. 22) Whatever you wish for may materialize so think about what you really want, make up a game plan and then go for it. It’s through changes and developing new interests in your life that you’ll experience the very best that this autumn has to offer.

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Your perfectionistic ways are being challenged this fall. Some people or situations from the past may be returning to haunt your present. Try to look at these as opportunities. You are a bit more cantankerous than usual, but this is not a bad thing, as often you do not stick up for yourself. Don’t let anyone steamroll over top of you.
