Time to reconnect
After one of the best real summers we’ve had in years, it’s time to reconnect in the place where you can learn about natural health and share your stories—a magazine that’s like a friend with whom you can laugh and talk about the issues that truly interest you. For instance, did you know that migraine headaches are curable? All it takes is finding out what your triggers are, and then eliminating them. Also, it’s time to go online and see what Viva has to offer. The Viva website at vivamagazine.com features fascinating health news of interest to you and your family. You can also browse through the previous issues of Viva, to see what you’ve missed—recipes, health and beauty features, and exciting fashion spreads. And, if you haven’t yet checked out Viva on Facebook, join our community and “Like” us. Then get involved in the conversation.

First Juice Forever Juice
Just JuiceTM Organic Pear juice isn’t just for kids. Delicious, refreshing and hypoallergenic, it is sure to be enjoyed by everyone. Pears have long been recognized as one of the first foods that can be introduced to a child, because they are among the least allergenic of all fruits. Just JuiceTM pasteurized, organic pear juice offers a safe, well tolerated juice with no residues from the toxic chemicals used to grow conventional tree fruits. Pear juice is one of the most balanced sources of naturally occurring sugars and sugar alcohols. Studies suggest that infants have greater absorption and tolerance of fruit juices containing natural fructose in combination with sucrose and glucose. This combination also appears to have beneficial effects, similar to those of fibre, for infants suffering from constipation. Our whole fruit pear juice is unclarified, unfiltered and not from concentrate to ensure it remains as natural and rich in nutrients and antioxidants as possible.

Behind the scenes Arriving with no makeup and damp hair tucked under a stylish fedora hat, Bridget Moynahan arrives for Viva’s photo shoot at trendy Erinn V. Maison Gallery looking every bit the model and actress she is. The home décor showroom in Beverly Hills was the perfect setting to reveal the Blue Bloods actress’ glam side once she’d transformed with clothes, jewellery and makeup. “I dress like this all the time,” she said, laughing as she lounged on a settee. Then, when the seven-hour photo shoot came to an end, the working mom donned her cuffed jeans, fl ats and fedora, and headed home to be with her son and whip up some dinner.

How do you define
Balanced Living?
Joanne M. Brathwaite Position at Viva Web Content Editor On balanced living Balanced living is one of those things we all strive for, but how to achieve it can be somewhat of a conundrum. I’m not a working mother, nor do I have children. However, as someone with a busy social and work life, I still find it challenging to get enough rest, eat the right foods or step away from the computer. Two years ago, I wound up in the hospital due to a stress-related illness, and had to take a leave of absence from work for seven weeks. It was a real eye-opener as to how much I was taking on—and how little I was taking care of myself. Since then, I’ve been mindful not to sweat the small stuff, as they say; I realize now that my health absolutely comes before anything else, including work or friends, and I no longer feel anxious or guilty about saying “no.” One of the things that I really love to do is salsa, and I make it a point to dance socially at least once a week. In addition, I see a wonderful naturopath whose advice has helped me learn how to listen to my body. Last, having a great personal support group of friends and family has been integral to keeping me balanced and finding joy.

GETTING the
To achieve a beautiful complexion, it takes more than moisturizer, says makeup pro Maggie Ng by lena grady
T
hirty-five-year-old Gwen spent countless hours perusing the aisles of her local pharmacy for products to fix her dry skin. She’d tried everything from harsh exfoliators to high-tech lotions—to no avail. Even finding the right foundation to cover up her skincare woes seemed a difficult feat.
Instead, look for products that contain essential oils, certified organic ingredients, plant extracts, Vitamin E, Vitamin C and natural preservatives such as wheatgerm oil or grapeseed oil. However, be cautious—just because something claims to be natural or organic-based doesn’t mean it won’t cause a reaction on your skin. Always do a patch test first before using any product, she recommends. What’s your type?
Once you’ve figured out some of the chemical culprits, the next step is to determine your skin type so you can purchase a moisturizer that works with your specific needs. Usually you can determine your skin type by what you see visually, says Ng.

If you too are experiencing a complexion dilemma such as dry skin, start by taking a look at what’s in the products on your bathroom shelf, recommends Toronto-based makeup artist Maggie Ng. Do they contain artificial colours, synthetic dyes, parabens, formaldehydes, synthetic fragrances, petroleum, sulfates, petrochemicals or phthalates? If so, ditch them, she recommends.
beauty tips
➜ If your skin is oily it will generally have a sheen to it mid-day, and you should look for a mattifying, gel-based product. ➜ If it’s dry or dehydrated it will have a rough texture and be more prone to wrinkles, meaning you should look for a heavier texture or creamier product, or even layer on a serum first to maximize moisture. ➜ If your skin is sensitive, it will generally have red patches or blotches, and this reactive skin type means you should look for anything free of parabens or scents. ➜ Acne-prone skin is generally oilier with more blackheads, so a lightweight oil-free texture is best. ➜ With combination skin, there are many varieties such as an oily T-zone and dry cheeks. Ng recommends purchasing two different types of moisturizers and applying them to the corresponding areas. As for whether your moisturizer needs to change according to the time of year, Ng says yes. “As seasons change, so does your skin,” she says. “During the warmer months, try a lighter texture or a mattifying lotion, and in the colder months, a heavier, creamier texture is necessary, along with applying a more intense serum before going to bed.”
} VIVA
TRY IT FIRST
And if your skin is really problematic? “For someone with skin sensitivities, sometimes less is more—simply applying a tinted moisturizer may be best,” says Ng. Don’t be afraid to ask for samples or try it on before buying it. For a natural glow, try an illuminating primer or bronzer/blush with mineral ingredients, as they will have light-reflecting properties. Apply it to the high planes of the face where the sun will naturally hit, such as the cheeks, top of your forehead, temples, nose bridge, along the jawline and chin for that natural sun-kissed look. CATCH THE LIGHT
And to really get glowing? Using your ring finger, apply a thin layer of natural lip balm to the top of your cheekbones to highlight the area. “In certain angles, it will catch the light and look luminous,” says Ng. You can also get that dewy look by spritzing a toner or water spray about a foot away from your face during the day for a complexion refresh. give these a try
And one important point not to be missed. “No matter what time of year it is, you should wear sunscreen every day!”
Prices may vary by location.
PIGMENTS AND PLANTS
When choosing a foundation, look for natural ingredients such as mineral pigments and plant extracts to treat any skincare issues. There are a few types to choose from, such as tinted moisturizers, liquids, mousses or powders, and depending on the extent of your skincare issues, you can choose between a light, medium or full coverage base. In general, for oily skin you should use liquid, gel-based or powder foundations. On dry skin, try a cream-based, silicone-based or tinted moisturizer, says Ng. More expensive doesn’t necessarily mean better—test-drive a few in different price ranges to find one that suits your skin. To choose a shade that’s right for you, test it on your jawline to see if it blends with the colour of your neck and face. Look for cool versus warm undertones in the skin (determined by whether your skin tone is olive or more red) to help you choose a counterbalancing shade.

ince lips don’t have oil and sweat glands, they need our help to stay moist and plump. Many factors contribute to a loss in lip lustre; some are unavoidable, and some are preventable. Causes of dry, chapped lips can range from sun or wind exposure, cold, medications, health conditions, smoking, and repeated talking, licking and laughing. However, laugh lines don’t have to mean an end to smiling and sunshine. As we age, skin becomes more dehydrated and thinner, so we need to do our part in protecting our delicate faces while we enjoy the good things in life. Hormones, sun damage, and time will cause skin on lips to crack more frequently. Th is can lead to painful cuts; lips appearing thinner; and tiny lines appearing all around the lips—which can make wearing lipstick that much more challenging. So before we put cosmetics on top, let’s treat what’s underneath.

After waxing my legs, I get ingrown hairs in some places. This then creates pimples. What can I do to prevent these ingrown hairs? – Trisha, Edmonton, Alta.
I’m in my early 40s and I’m getting acne on my face. I’m also getting it on my neck. Do you have some recommendations on how to deal with this? – Brenda, Toronto, Ont.
Dear Trisha, Ingrown hairs often develop on the legs, especially where there is friction, on the inner thighs and bikini line. Hairs that are coarse tend to grow inward and can result in pimples or a red, inflamed bump. A buildup of dead skin can block the follicles. Try exfoliating a couple of times per week with a sea salt or sugar scrub to remove dead skin cells. and also cause the hair to grow inwards.
Dear Brenda, Acne in your 40s is usually related to hormones. Start your day with organic lemon and water, to gently cleanse for the liver. A sluggish liver can result in an excess of used hormones and congesting blood toxins in the body, and can cause the skin to break out.
Dry brushing is my personal favourite, as it will help with ingrown hairs and bumps, and result in soft, smooth skin, lymphatic drainage and increased blood circulation, which can help with the appearance of cellulite. Wait a day or so after waxing, to prevent irritating the skin. Brush the skin daily in an upward direction toward the heart, and then rinse the body to remove dead skin cells and toxins. Start with light strokes and increase the pressure as your skin gets used to it.

Eating a healthy diet that includes fresh fruits and vegetables can help balance hormones and reduce inflammation. Supplementing with zinc can also help. Getting regular exercise and sleeping well will help reduce stress and lower cortisol levels that can trigger acne. Use a gentle, natural cleanser that contains ingredients such as lavender, tea tree and chamomile. Exfoliate one to two times per week with a product that contains glycolic or fruit acid to remove dead cells. Gently rub in and don’t scrub the skin, as this can irritate it. To calm and protect the skin, finish with a light moisturizer with herbal extracts. Try using mineral makeup to give the skin a smooth and even finish.

Once the triggers of migraine headache are discovered, they can be eliminated by brian davies
A
migraine headache can put a real damper on anyone’s day. The good news is that migraine headaches are completely treatable and preventable once their triggers are identified and eliminated, and any nutritional deficiencies addressed. Getting to the heart of a migraine sufferer’s triggers may be arduous, but I have never failed a client yet, and working to resolve the causes of a person’s migraines, in my experience, is always better than relying on prescription medication.

Laying the groundwork for treatment starts with the digestive system. Although migraines almost always come with a headache and visual disturbances, many sufferers also–or only–experience symptoms in the digestive system, such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. This is, in part, because the answer for migraine treatment and prevention is often associated with the neurotransmitter serotonin.

GUT LEVEL
health feature Serotonin helps with people’s moods; however, it is also highly concentrated in the gut and helps with intestinal motility through its effects on smooth muscle contraction. When working with a person who experiences frequent migraine headaches, starting with a diet that is low in sugar, including starchy carbohydrates and tropical fruits, is a must. It is also important to balance intestinal flora, with a particular focus on yeast overgrowth, as yeast and other opportunistic bacteria can significantly decrease the absorption of tryptophan, the amino acid precursor to serotonin. Yeast overgrowth can also be the cause of some people’s migraine headaches. FOOD SUSPECTS
Specific foods in the diet can also be triggers. Food elimination or testing for food allergies can help migraine sufferers better control these triggers. Common food allergies, such as dairy, eggs, gluten grains, soy, sulphites and MSG may be considered. However, any food trigger can be involved. Identifying and eliminating food triggers is an essential part of an initial treatment plan for migraine sufferers. Hormones and environmental allergies can also cause migraine headaches. I always recommend that my clients who use hormone-based contraception stop taking their birth control pills for several months to determine if this can make a difference.
} VIVA
Other clients clearly get their migraine headaches right before menstruation, which can be a sign that low estrogen or poor estrogen metabolism is involved as a trigger. Correcting this deficiency with hormone replacement or addressing how a person’s body processes estrogens will often eliminate this cause. Environmental triggers such as weather and airborne allergens can also play their part. These causes will likely resolve with proper supplementation, along with dietary and lifestyle treatments. ANTI-MIGRAINE NUTRIENTS
Correcting nutrient deficiencies is a must, and low magnesium is at the core of initial treatment. Magnesium glycinate (300 to 600 mg per day) in a supplemental form is effective, although it may take a while to achieve results. Therefore, I offer intravenous magnesium to clients at the beginning of treatment for fast relief. Vitamin B2 or ribofl avin deficiency has also been connected to migraine headaches, and should be supplemented (200 to 400 mg per day) with the support of a vitamin B complex to correct this deficiency. Finally, adding a standardized extract of the herb butterbur can often address environmental and allergic triggers. Remember: before experimenting with supplemental herbs, speak to a knowledgeable professional.
Echinacea: Harness the flower power Modern science has proven conclusively what Native Americans have known for centuries- that echinacea is a powerful weapon in the fight against cold and flu. Thanks to extensive clinical testing, we now know that echinacea functions in two ways: 1. It strengthens the body’s immune response, stimulating the production of antiviral agents to prevent colds in the first place. 2. It decreases inflammation that occurs when the body does catch a virus- inflammation that you feel as the common symptoms of a cold- congestion, sore throat, headaches, etc.
Not all echinacea is created equal Researchers have determined that extracts produced with fresh plants, like A.Vogel’s Echinaforce®, have a concentration of ingredients that is up to two and a half times greater than those made from dried plants.

10 ways to treat colds and flu by dr. joyce johnson nd

s the days get shorter, thoughts of colder weather usually cross our minds. Th is usually means cold and flu season. Catching a cold really has nothing to do with cold weather. Spending more time indoors during the winter means viruses are more easily passed hand to hand and through the air. Someone at work or school with a cold will often, unknowingly, pass it along through a handshake, sneeze or cough. HERE ARE 10 WAYS YOU CAN USE NATURAL REMEDIES TO TREAT COLDS AND FLUS:
1
Echinacea is an immune stimulant, which means it stimulates your immune system into activity. The best course of action is to take it as soon as you feel the

Salt-water rinsing for a stuffy nose helps break nasal congestion, while also removing virus particles and bacteria from your nose. Steam, although it doesn’t kill cold or flu viruses, is helpful because it opens the sinuses and airways so you can breathe more easily. Adding eucalyptus oil is
beneficial—it fights viruses, bacteria and fungi.
Now you’re prepped to protect yourself and your family from getting sick this winter. Stock up on the immune-enhancing herbs, cut down on sugar consumption, get plenty of rest and use common sense. Combining a balanced diet with appropriate natural health products is probably the most important consideration in maintaining a healthy immune system. give these a try

veryone dreads that feeling. It starts with a tickle in your throat. Then maybe you get a headache, or your eyes feel unusually heavy. The end of the work day rolls around and you’re exhausted. Then BAM, you wake up the next morning with a full-on infection and realize without a doubt that you’ve got a cold.
“It’s much more difficult to push the invaders out than it is to keep them out [once they’re in],” explains naturopathic doctor Adrian Nasager, who works out of Jaconello Health Centre and MD Direct in Toronto. Be prepared
Thankfully, there are natural ways to support your immune system and stay healthy all year round. Drive them out
Our immune system’s job is to distinguish friends from foes as cells enter our bodies, primarily through our mucosal surfaces, which include our eyes, mouths and nasal passages. Then, when our immune system detects an enemy such as a virus or bacterial infection, it goes into attack mode. If we’re strong and our immune system has the fuel it needs to perform properly, colds and other illnesses can be driven out before they have a chance to take over.
So how can we prepare to combat these invaders? “Stressors of any kind, chemical or emotional, lack of nutrients or lack of resources can all lead to a depleted immune system,” advises Nasager. That’s why it’s particularly important that you take time to unwind with long walks, yoga or whatever helps you feel calm and refreshed during cold and flu season. If you are having trouble managing stress, your naturopathic doctor can offer strategies to help. A healthy lifestyle that includes regular moderate exercise will help you stay strong and balanced, but be careful not to overdo it if you think you might be coming down with something.

SYSTEM SABOTEURS
Sugar and alcohol are two of the biggest immune system saboteurs. “Alcohol has consistently been shown to depress the immune system because it’s essentially a toxin,” Nasager notes. “It requires a ton of energy to be metabolized, and it’s also a sugar. Sugar has been shown to depress white blood cell counts.”
Last, get plenty of rest. “Th at’s when you’re regenerating, that’s when you’re producing all your white blood cells,” says Nasager. “I would say of all the lifestyle factors, sleep is the most important.”

Carnie, at 5’3½”, underwent a gastric bypass 12 years ago, then saw her waistline grow bigger, especially after having her two kids, now six and two. “I go on the treadmill three times a week and walk with my family two days (out of seven). But what truly makes me happy is doing nice things for others; that boosts my self-confidence.” REVIVAL BY EXERCISE
Wendy, almost four inches taller than her sibling, likes to walk outdoors five days a week for 30 minutes. “I love to hike sometimes and do yoga or Cardio Barre occasionally,” she says. “Exercise really revives me and makes me feel pretty. A good haircut is up there with a mani/pedi too. But it’s time with my children and in nature that really gives me good vibrations.” Chynna, at 5’8”, has always been on the thin side, and still eats a well-balanced, healthy diet, beginning each day with quinoa fl akes and ending the day usually with a fish dinner. Now, with a hectic touring schedule on the horizon, she says she’ll be eating a lot of cultured vegetables and different veggie soups to maintain stamina and energy levels. BEATING FAMILY HISTORY
Wendy says she’s conscious of familial diseases such as cancer, heart disease and diabetes. “I try to be aware of what I ingest and expose myself to, such as chemicals or too much sugar. I like to stay at a healthy weight and keep my body strong and fit.” She tried going the vegetarian route years ago, along with a wheat-free and low carb lifestyle. However, now what works for her is “clean, balanced eating, emphasizing whole grains, and lots of fruits and vegetables.” Since January 2012, Carnie’s strategy has been “To put my health first. I had a lap band put on over my bypass, and it has helped me lose 32 pounds so far. I’ve changed my entire diet—cutting out all sugar, butter, oils, white flour, and I’ve cut my portions by two-thirds.” She begins her day with scrambled eggs with low-fat cheese and fresh herbs, plain nonfat Greek yogurt with agave and cinnamon, with turkey bacon. “Still, I’m not human without my coffee,” she adds. Carnie sums up what healthy living means to her: Good food, minimal stress, daily exercise and communication with others. For Wendy’s part, she says, “It’s all about balance between mind and body, proper rest, nutrition, with a creative outlet.” And Chynna, on a more spiritual level says, “Being gentle with myself and reminding myself that I’m usually doing my very best— that’s healthy living for me.” FR ESH STARTS 2012 VIVAMAGONLINE.COM

Going gluten-free is easier than ever!
According to the Canadian Celiac Association, one in 133 Canadians has celiac disease, and as many as 5 million Canadians have some sensitivity to gluten. The latter group includes those with autism, ADHD, chronic fatigue syndrome, Crohn’s disease, colitis, irritable bowel syndrome and other food-related allergies and sensitivities. What is gluten?
Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley, rye and triticale. In flour, gluten is the ingredient that helps the ingredients of baked goods bind together, and prevents crumbling. Celiac disease and gluten sensitivity
The Canadian Celiac Association defines celiac disease as “an autoimmune disease where the surface of the small intestine that absorbs nutrients from food is damaged by a substance called gluten. This results in an inability of the body to absorb nutrients: protein, fat, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals, which are necessary for good health.” The symptoms of celiac disease include weight loss, bloating, cramping, anemia and fatigue. Non-celiac gluten-sensitivity describes what happens to certain people who develop a variety of symptoms when they eat gluten, feel better when they don’t eat it, and do not actually have celiac disease. Great gluten-free products
Eating gluten-free is becoming less challenging for anyone seeking these products.

health advice from the pros dr. brian davies, bsc, nd
I keep getting urinary tract infections, and I’m not sure why. Some of my friends get them too, and some never get them. Is it something I need in my diet that I’m not eating? I want to know how to prevent this from coming back. – Donna, Mississauga, Ont. Dear Donna, Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are almost always caused by the bacteria E. coli. Opportunistic bacteria, such as E. coli, can invade the urethra (urinary tract) from the gastrointestinal tract. So the key to preventing urinary tract infections is maintaining a healthy colon. E. coli is quite susceptible to the cranberry sugar D- mannose, along with other cranberry extracts. D-mannose comes as a supplement or can be found in natural, unsweetened cranberry juice. It takes about 125 mls of cranberry juice several times per day for a few weeks to really clear out the E. coli from the urinary tract. A daily maintenance dose is recommended to prevent the infection from returning. Anatomy, in that area, can also play a major role in increasing the susceptibility to UTI’s. Loose fitting underwear and proper hygiene can help prevent invasion of the urethra. You may also try taking the amino acid L-Arginine if the above mentioned fail to resolve your concerns.

Bridget’s
BaLAnCinG ACT Being a mother has given Bridget Moynahan a no-nonsense outlook on life by bonnie siegler • photography by john russo styling by jeff kim • hair by gio campora • makeup by jenn steicher manicure by nettie davis • video by steven silpa shot on location at erinn v gallery - erinn v design group You can view the video from the photo shoot at vivamagonline.com
“Oh my gosh,” Bridget Moynahan exclaims, “Maggie is eating all my papers. She’s going bananas and is completely out of control.” The actress who stars as New York Assistant District Attorney Erin ReaganBoyle in the police drama Blue Bloods is referring to her three-month-old Lab puppy, Maggie. In real life, the Massachusetts-bred model and actress who made a name for herself in the movie Coyote Ugly is not of aristocratic or socially prominent lineage. Rather, she’s a busy working mother of a five-year-old son, John. Wearing the hats of chef, chauffeur and caretaker, she says she’d have it no other way. “I feel like I still have a grounding in growing up in a small town, a sense of community, and I bring that to my everyday world,” Moynahan says.

The skin she’s in
Never a skinny model/actress type, Moynahan has relied on her strong physicality for a vibrant and healthy body image. “I think every girl goes through a state of going out on your own and learning exactly who you are, and not just who you were brought up to be,” she says when asked if she’d experienced any self-image issues in earlier days. “I modelled for a number of years, so I watched a lot of girls go through self-image problems, but I had a good sense of self and I didn’t really fall into that trap. I’m completely comfortable in my own skin now.” Moynahan admits that her fashion sense has evolved over the years into a much more comfortable look. “I would not consider myself very talented in décor or fashion, so I draw a lot of help from photo shoots and websites,” she says. “I’ve tried different things over the years and was really into an androgynous look at one time, then maybe more of a sexy look. So I’m kind of a hybrid of those looks now, and still finding myself.” Clothes for confidence
These days, the working mom is no longer intimidated by wardrobe—she’s empowered by it. “Certain clothes can make me feel really confident and sexy,” she says. “I think fashion can help your attitude and your mood. A well-dressed woman, in my opinion, shows confidence and personality in their choices. You have to weave your own personality into your look.” And a well-dressed man? She smiles. “I really appreciate a well-dressed man…just classic pieces and comfort. I’ve noticed a lot of basketball players now wearing button-down shirts and jeans—a real preppy look, which is contrasting to their profession. I like that men are going in that direction.” Hard work pays off
The 42-year-old actress has certainly worked hard since she launched her career in modelling. She transitioned to commercial work and acting, making her TV debut as a guest in 1999 in Sex and the City, which turned into a regular gig as Mr. Big’s wife, Natasha. Now Moynahan is carrying the largest workload as a mother, and her wardrobe is less sexy and stilettos, and more slacks and flats. And with Blue Bloods filmed in New York, she has become a bi-coastal resident. “It’s all a matter of balancing things,” says the statuesque 5’9½” beauty who also was seen on the big screen recently in Battle: Los Angeles. “I think anyone who has a kid instantly gets rid of a lot of the nonsense in their life because they don’t have time for it.”

“I think anyone who has a kid instantly gets rid of a lot of the nonsense in their life because they don’t have time for it.” Time out
Moynahan has good reason for needing downtime. Luckily for her, the summer gave her a chance to take time off to be with John, friends and herself. “In this block of time I’ve had off, I’ve really tried to find time to take care of myself,” she says. “A lot of women put taking care of themselves on the back burner because we’re always taking care of everybody else. But I’ve really tried to find some time for me every single day, and it’s difficult.”
up all the time, so I might play tennis, go swimming, bike riding—or my new thing is working on the indo board for core work and balance. Now I’m home taking care of things around the house.” The former sports enthusiast who excelled at team sports and tennis laments she has found no time lately for basketball. However, she’s glad she had those experiences. “You know, I continued playing team sports throughout my life, and the commitment you make to it really helps you in other areas of life,” she says. No regrets
“Me time” means acupuncture, exercise, massages, eating well and the guilty pleasure of TV’s Game of Thrones, all which have contributed to Moynahan’s vibrant and youthful appearance. “I have a small group of friends, and we’re all the same age; we still feel like we’re in our 20s, so it’s an attitude, too.” Changing it up
Perhaps it’s her relationship with her son John, or her friends, but these days Moynahan’s pace in life and work is far more measured and with more variety. “Like today, I just came back from working out where I did sprints and fireman drills,” she says. “I like to change it
Moynahan seems to spend little time regretting the valleys of her life, saying whatever has happened, she has been able to turn it into a silver lining. “Every single one of them,” she states. “Obviously I went through a big public breakup [with NFL quarterback Tom Brady], and a lot of my friends are going through similar situations. So I remind everyone to find the positive in every single moment, no matter how hard it is to find. Because at the end of the day, you want to make sure you’re feeling good, so make it a positive experience somehow.” It’s no surprise, then, that when asked to describe herself in a few words, she says: “Tough and resilient.”
Moynahan on style: • Most memorable fashion splurge: “A pair of black and white Balenciaga pants I bought in Paris recently.” • You’ll never catch me wearing… “Ruffles.” • Last time you bought yourself jewellery: “Yesterday. I bought these beautiful, simple bamboo bangles that are covered in leather.” • What do you never leave home without? “A great pair of sunglasses, my gold stud earrings and my favourite coconut flavoured lip gloss that I buy at the pharmacy.”

balanced living called me bug-eyes because I had really big eyes that I hadn’t grown into yet,” she says. However, in her own mind, the 32-year-old actress thinks a woman’s beauty lies “in having a kind heart, grace and humility. Just exhibiting a real balanced outlook on life makes a really strong, beautiful woman.” Finding stability in her everyday life with regular exercise and hobbies, whether in Atlanta where the show films, or in Los Angeles where she has a permanent residence, helps Bowlby stay grounded. Just breathe
“Working out helps clear my mind— the more you work out, the more you’re breathing, and I find that it helps me ground myself,” she says. “I do other things like knitting, and I’m taking cooking classes. So when I have time on my hands, I fill it up with fun things.”

t 5’10”, with blond hair and a winning smile, actress April Bowlby still knows about body image struggles. Co-starring as Stacy Barrett in Lifetime’s hit series Drop Dead Diva as best friend to a model whose soul lands in the body of a brilliant, plus-sized attorney, Bowlby says,
Bowlby also enjoys making quick, healthy meals. For dinner the night before our chat, she had whipped up baked salmon with broccoli and salad topped with tomatoes and avocado. “I like eating healthy meals, but I don’t weigh myself at all. I don’t even own a scale. I listen to my body and it tells me what I need to do,” she states. In the middle
“I think everyone goes through an awkward stage in their lives when they can’t really figure out their body image. Our show is quite popular because everyone knows that feeling about not being happy with selfimage.” Beauty defined
It’s hard to imagine, and yet Bowlby experienced these issues when she was a kid growing up in northern California. “Kids would call me chicken legs because my legs were super skinny and long. They
Bowlby has an interesting take on how organized her life is. “I’d say I’m organized enough where I don’t forget appointments, and I have a clean house,” she says. “Friends of mine are much more organized than that, but I don’t like it when order becomes a chore. If you have a busy life, it’s important to know what the next thing is coming at you. I think some people are interesting because they have structure within chaos. I’m somewhere in the middle, I guess.” In fact, Bowlby describes herself as “happy, a little shy and physical.” Best of all, she says, “I’m alive so I’m lucky in life!”

DEENA DILL lets no one dash her dreams by bonnie siegler
S
he had a little idle-jet motorcycle at the age of five, was an accomplished gymnast and played Little League baseball with the boys all before her teen years. Deena Dill, a self-professed tomboy from rural Dayton, Tennessee, matured into a 5’6” model, now actressturned-producer who just wrapped fi lming Suburgatory and iCarly. At Vanderbilt University, Dill ran track as a 100-metre hurdler and triple jumper. “I was better at the 50-metre indoor track,” she states confidently, “because I had better technique and worked hard at it.” So did competitive sports and a tomboy childhood help in her current endeavours? “I would say more hard work than competition,” Dill says. “I’ve set my sights on something and not let other’s opinions dash my dreams, but I’ve definitely let their opinions shape me into a more pragmatic dreamer. Add determination and perseverance. Overall, it’s more of being the best you can be.” BEYOND THE GYM
Dill now wants to prove she’s the finest at ballroom dancing or a 5k run. Working out three to four times a week in the gym or walking the hills near her Los Angeles home, Dill says, is not enough exercise for her. “I have to find something to do besides just the gym; I need something that has an end accomplishment so that I stay dedicated to it.” The executive producer of the new reality competition show, Oh Sit, an extreme version of musical chairs, is also committed to maintaining a healthy balance with food. GOODBYE TO DEEP FRY
“I have good stuff like bananas, spinach and carrots in the kitchen for smoothies, lots of raw vegetables for salads, soy milk, but I also have Butterfingers and cheddar and sour cream potato chips,” she says. “Plus, being from the South, I used to eat lots of fried foods and drink carbonated drinks. I rarely do either any more. I try to balance everything out. If I’m craving chocolate, then I’ll have a little candy bar. I try not to cut out the bad stuff, but try to make sure I’m adding good stuff into my eating.” As for what helps the actress stay balanced and grounded—in spite of the fact that “relationship confl icts cause her stress”—she says there are three things: “Talking to my mom, getting in some exercise, and sleep. I cannot function on less than six and a half hours of sleep. Oh, and watching college football during fall and winter. That’s a great stress reducer for me.”

Crazy for quinoa Th is fall, change things up and give quinoa a try. It’s the seed of a plant that grows in the Andes countries of South America, and it’s very nutritious. Not only does it contain significant amounts of magnesium, lysine, fibre and iron; it’s also high in protein. You can use it a substitute for rice, and feature it in salads and desserts—or even as a hot breakfast porridge. To cook quinoa, simply boil it for about 15 minutes.

Stir in the cheese. Season with salt and pepper. 7. Fold the macaroni into the mix, along with pancetta, and pour into a 2-quart casserole dish. 8. Melt the butter in a sauté pan and toss the breadcrumbs to coat. 9. Top the macaroni with the breadcrumbs. 10. Bake for 30 minutes. Remove from oven and let sit for five minutes before serving.

Set a large cast iron pan or griddle over high heat and let this heat up for 1-2 minutes. Add oil to the pan and heat for 1 minute. 3. New Guiding Stars program at your local Loblaws! ®
Get quick help making healthier choices
N
ext time you’re shopping at Loblaws, you’ll have a new way of getting to know how nutritious various food items are. The Guiding Stars® program gives you at-a-glance nutritional ratings for 70,000 foods found in every aisle of the store. Rated foods are marked with easy-to-understand tags of 0, 1, 2 or 3 stars. The more nutritional value a food has, the more Guiding Stars it receives. • One Guiding Star indicates good nutritional value • Two Guiding Stars indicate better nutritional value • Three Guiding Stars indicate the best nutritional value Foods get stars for containing more vitamins, minerals, dietary fibre, whole grains, and omega-3 fats, and they miss out on getting stars if they contain saturated fat, trans fat, added sodium, or added sugars. Foods with fewer than five calories per serving, such as bottled water, tea and spices are not rated. If a food has been rated and has no stars, it did not meet the criteria for a Guiding Star. Most people like it!
Recent in-store research from the first phase of Guiding Stars® in the Greater Toronto Area showed that eight in 10 customers liked
the program, considering it clear and easy to use because it offered helpful information on making healthier choices. The Guiding Stars® program is designed to complement existing nutritional data such as the nutrition facts table, on-package product labels, and Canada’s Food Guide to Healthy Eating. Dietitians are there to help
A registered dietitian is a regulated health professional who can help make sense of food and nutrition. Fifty Loblaw stores currently offer in-store dietitians year round, available to answer your questions about healthy food choices. Supporting your journey to health

Tyrrells introduces the Exceedingly English Potato Chips We’re Tyrrells and we’re obsessed with making the finest potato chips in the world. We started crafting our potato chips on Tyrrells Court Farm in England in 2002. Our soil is rich, red and fertile - perfect for growing high quality heritage varieties of potatoes such as Lady Claire and Lady Rosetta. They’re the names of the potatoes, not the farmers – just to be clear. We are close to the whole process, from planting to harvesting and finally creating our potato chips in small batches, knowing that quality will always be top notch – as evidenced by over 50 Gold Great Taste Awards won in England. We believe quality also comes from using the finest of ingredients. All our seasonings are made of real ingredients that are dried and carefully combined to become the perfect seasoning for our chips... so when you crunch into a Mature Cheddar chip, that’s real mature cheddar you’re tasting!
Now... Being English means that we have a certain outlook on life, and that we like to do things our way, a little differently. Our packaging is entertaining and different from what you’d usually find. The rather eccentric black and white photos dramatise our seasoning and present them in a very unorthodox way. You will find also that the characters are very English but mostly a little eccentric, like our mature ladies with a truckle of cheddar cheese or our bathers turning cartwheels on the beach. We reckon our potato chips are rather special and here are the variants that have crossed the Atlantic to delight your delicate pallet: Lightly Sea Salted, Mature Cheddar & Chives, Sea Salt & Cider Vinegar, Sweet Chilli & Red Pepper, Sea Salt & Black Pepper, and Worcestershire Sauce & Sundried Tomatoes. We also produce finger licking vegetable chips: Parsnip, Beetroot & Carrot chips with a pinch of Sea Salt. We reckon our chips are rather special - dig in and let us know what you think!
Available in natural food stores, speciality stores and selected grocery.

health issue: scars Symptoms: Over the last three years, I had two major surgeries, which left me with two 12-inch-plus scars on my back, following up my rib cage. My surgeon did an incredible job, literally saving my life; however, as the scar tissue formed, I began experiencing constant, excruciating pain. The pain was preventing me from sleeping and from being able to work. Health recommendation: I found a naturopathic doctor who specializes in pain treatments. On her advice, I followed a course of acupuncture treatments for the pain. The results: I experienced immediate relief. After the second treatment I felt tremendous relief and had no pain for three days! After each treatment, my scar would not be painful for a longer period of time. Just after five treatments I went on a long trip and was pain-free the entire time! I am so grateful to have an effective pain management program without resorting to harmful medications. health issue: arthritis Symptoms: Over the years I have sustained several injuries to my knees. When I was younger, the injuries did not affect me, but with time they started to bother me. I finally came to the point where I could no longer walk uphill, and was having difficulty walking on flat surfaces. I went to a medical specialist who ordered X-rays, which showed that I have severe arthritis in both knees. Knee replacement surgery seemed to be my only option. Health recommendations: I am not a fan of surgery, so I went to see a naturopathic doctor to get some advice. She recommended some diet modifications and cleansing to reduce inflammation. She also suggested we try a course of injection treatments called Prolotherapy. The results: I was amazed. After just one treatment I was able to walk with considerably less pain. We have done three treatments on my knees, and I am again able to enjoy my surroundings. My ND has explained that due to my level of deterioration, I may still require the surgery. However, as long as the Prolotherapy injections are helping, I am willing to keep them up. Name: Cynthia Age: 64 Occupation: Retired real estate agent and homemaker Viva WANTS TO HE AR FROM YOU! TIPS for arm toning To get strong, toned arms, you need to condition the back muscles around your shoulder blades • by margot mckinnon
Typically, when people want to strengthen their arms, they work muscles such as the biceps and triceps, the pecs and the lats. These muscles are very important, certainly; however, the key to getting the most out of them is to ensure they have effective support from the back. Try the following exercises in the order suggested. Focus on gradual movement, as this will help ensure you recruit the correct muscles. If you feel anything in your neck or lower back, start again. These exercises are intended to condition the upper body, shoulders and arms, and those are the areas you should feel working!
Shoulder blade glides on hands and knees 1. Position yourself on hands and knees. 2. Inhale, and as you exhale, pull your abdominal wall gently toward your spine, and hover your knees above the floor. 3. Hang your head forward. If this is uncomfortable, position your head where it is most comfortable. 4. Glide your shoulder blades together at the back of the body. Then try pulling them apart as if they are gliding into the armpits. 5. Do three sets of 4-6 reps. 6. This exercise is a full-body exercise, so expect to feel your legs, your midriff and your upper body working simultaneously. Avoid rounding and arching your back. 7. If you feel tension building in your neck, make the shoulder blade motion smaller.
Prone shoulder extension 1. Lie face down with arms long at your sides. 2. Inhale, and as you exhale, draw your abdominal wall gently toward your spine. 3. Lift your shoulders away from the floor so they feel square. 4. Then lift your arms a few inches off the floor. Move them up and down rhythmically 10 times. Do three sets of 10 reps. 5. Feel your shoulders, triceps (upper back of arm) and upper back and chest muscles working. 6. Make sure you are not compressing the lower back; if so, try to fill out the ribs at the back of the body. 7. If you feel tension building in your neck, try lifting the shoulders only for a few days, and then add the arm hover. 8. For added resistance, try holding a 2 lb. or 3 lb. weight in each hand.

“L” Arms - 6-10 reps 1. Lie face down and place your arms at right angles, like two letter L’s facing each other on either side of your head. 2. Inhale, then exhale and gently draw your abdominal wall away from the floor. 3. Lift your shoulders away from the floor. Then hover your arms a few inches from the floor. 4. Feel for the back muscles activating between the shoulder blades. Hold for three seconds. Make sure you are not compressing the lower back; if so, try to fill out the ribs at the back of the body. 5. If you feel tension building in your neck, try lifting the shoulders only for a few days, and then adding the arm hover.

Small town idyll W “
Cooperstown, New York is a touch of genteel elegance by bonnie siegler
ho’s on first, what’s on second, I don’t know is on third,” quips Abbot to Costello. I am in the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York where one of the funniest baseball scenes in history is being shown on a small screen. This summer I spent a week in this pastoral village that has become the heart and soul of baseball legend. It’s absolutely no surprise that America’s favourite pastime is honoured in this one-stoplight Americana town in central New York, known for its vibrant fall foliage. I grew up only an hour away from this idyllic setting, and decided to come back for a visit after decades in frenetic Los Angeles. My companion and I stayed at the 135room historic Otesaga Resort Hotel on the southern shore of Lake Otsego. This hotel has seen many notables—from Franklin D. Roosevelt and the Clintons, to John Travolta and Brad Pitt—walk through its lounge that is reminiscent of a grand room in the Scottish Highlands. Many of James Fenimore Cooper’s Leatherstocking tales were formed right here. Dream come true
When I was a little girl, I had gazed at the stately front portico of the hotel, with its massive columns, thinking some day I would be a guest within this
storybook English manor. And here I was, enjoying refined accommodations and a peacefulness that prevails on the newly restored lakeside verandah. The Otesaga dates back to 1909 when it was built with a style and grandeur befitting that era, yet is today dedicated to preserving and protecting “America’s most perfect village.” Men must still wear a jacket for dinner in the formal dining room, a soaring, stately space renovated in 2010, “with wallpaper handcrafted in England,” says Robert Faller, director of sales in marketing. “All refreshed public spaces were envisioned by seeking to update the classic hotel while maintaining its traditional elegance. We have reduced our ecological footprint and incorporated environmental practices wherever we can.” Sample the suds
Cooperstown was once the hops capital of America and the Ommegang Brewery, just outside the village, is the only Belgianstyle brewery in the U.S. Receiving multiple awards for its winning ales, its amber “Rare Vos” won the World Beer Cup Gold award this year. Judging from the accolades of other visitors, Ommegang ales are not to be missed. Want to sample some? Faller suggests dropping in on October 6 for the brewery’s 15th birthday celebration that includes authentic Belgian waffles.

As integral to Cooperstown as the Baseball Hall of Fame is the Fenimore Art Museum that houses an extensive collection of folk and Native American art, considered by some to be the finest in the country, and memorabilia of James Fenimore Cooper. Out back, the lifestyle of native peoples is detailed and explained. Through December 31, the museum has an exhibit of William Matthew Prior, the first show devoted solely to this American folk artist who documented faces of middle-class Americans throughout his own lifetime. As my Cooperstown visit proved, you really can go home. New memories can collide and blend with the old. A visit to this town serves to bring people together under happy circumstances, even if you can’t remember the next line of the famed Abbot and Costello routine.

Breaking
out of the
Full recovery means being good to yourself, seeing friends, and retraining your brain • by rebecca rosenblat
B
eing in love is as much physical as it is emotional. Our feelings work in tandem with physical sensations; while the euphoria of a new relationship douses you with energy, the heartache of a breakup saps you of it. You feel like you can’t breathe, let alone eat or sleep. You accumulate frequent crier miles. Your friends go from being supportive to being tired of hearing the same old stories over and over—especially since they warned you about the guy to begin with. When we fall in love, our lover literally becomes a part of our brain, since it develops pathways geared toward them: recognition of intimate details, strong feelings, regular routines, etc. Once this person is gone, the brain goes looking for them—all they meant, and the comfortable routines that surrounded them—so it can work effortlessly in auto-pilot once again.
When it doesn’t find them, the brain starts to miss them and goes into withdrawal. This is almost identical to cocaine withdrawal, right down to seeking that fi x again, despite its harmful effects. The good news is that you can retrain your brain to do whatever you want. Here’s how. Getting over someone is a process, not an event. It needs to run its natural course through five stages: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. Eventually, you’ll come out the other end a better person, one who can usher in a new life that lives up to your standards. Th is is your chance to transform your life. So write a eulogy that talks about the way you want to be remembered, and then commit to the changes that will see to it. Use your pain constructively, and then discard it. Pain is the brain’s way of letting you know what’s harmful. Using the proverbial hot stove example, if getting burned didn’t hurt, you’d leave your hand

tea tree Oil: Long used as a healing agent because it’s antimicrobial, the oil made from leaves of this Australian tree is a wonderful addition to hair care products, as well as moisturizers and other skin products. It can even be used as a mouthwash.
Tocopheryl Acetate: This is a form of vitamin E that is used in skin products, and that has a longer shelf life than other forms. Vitamin E is well known for providing moisture to the skin, and helping to heal wounds. It is also an antioxidant that helps guard the body against damaging free radicals.
Sea kelp: You’re likely most familiar with sea kelp as a plant that washes up on ocean beaches and shorelines. It’s also an increasingly common ingredient in personal care and beauty products. That’s because it’s full of minerals, vitamins and amino acids. As a beauty ingredient, it can moisturize without being oily.
pomegranate: Rich in vitamins and other nutrients such as omega oil, pomegranate seed oil and juice is added to beauty products because it’s so good for the skin. It’s known to have anti-aging and healing properties. In fact, pomegranate juice is considered to be a superfruit.

horoscope
Libra
by chrissie blaze
(Sept. 23-Oct. 23)
You may be called upon to mediate an argument around September 20, and others will be impressed by your fairness and diplomatic skills. Relationship issues come to a head now as Saturn prepares to leave your sign on October 9. This will bring vitality and freedom from the restraints of the last two years.
Scorpio (Oct. 24 – Nov. 21)
PISCES (Feb. 19-Mar. 20)
September is good for improving your daily routines. Schedule extra time at the gym and for regular meditation; this will be helpful when Saturn enters your sign on October 9. This planet of discipline remains in Scorpio for two years, helping you to stay positive and spiritual.
A Mercury-Mars aspect on September 5 is excellent for untangling a misunderstanding after a stressful period. Try swimming and meditation to help you relax. Intimate relationships are highlighted when Saturn moves into fellow Water sign Scorpio on October 9, reminding you it’s just as important to be honest as compassionate.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Your career is highlighted in September, and you’ll enjoy the limelight. You get a boost of energy when Venus enters fellow fire sign Leo on September 6, and it’s a good time to travel. Mars jumps into your sign on October 6, urging you to exercise, and push ahead on all fronts.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Gifts, love and money flow when Venus enters your House of Close Sharing on September 6. The New Moon on the 15th prompts you to expand your mind through study or travel. This feeling of expansion continues through October; keep your goals high, for you can now achieve your heart’s desire.
ARIES (Mar. 21-Apr. 19)
CANCER (June 22-July 22)
Your planet, Mars, is urging you to rebellion from September 3-4; channel the energy into competitive sports and the gym to maintain your equilibrium and enjoy increased vitality. In October, your intuition saves you from reckless action and helps you to unravel relationship knots and challenges that have caused anxiety.
In September, you’re moving toward success. From September 18, be flexible and open to unexpected opportunities. A challenging aspect of Jupiter and Saturn on October 15 urges you to focus on important issues. Slow your pace, reflect and don’t allow minor everyday things to distract you and pull you off course.
TAURUS (Apr. 20-May 20)
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)
A joyful aspect between Venus and the Moon’s North Node attracts people who support you in your plans around September 5. Then relationships become rocky toward the end of September, and in October these issues demand attention. You may find that compromise is required to de-stress and avoid conflict.
September begins with frenzied activity, so keep calm through meditation and yoga. The action is building with Uranus and Pluto on September 19, urging you to eliminate negative habits that hold you back. In October, your uncertainty fades, and you begin to see a clear picture of a better future.
GEMINI (May 21-June 21)
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)
There are changes coming your way over the next few years, and in September, you’re empowered to make constructive decisions that will impact your future. Remain true to what you feel, as others may not agree. You’re filled with vitality and positivity from October 9-10 when the Sun trines Jupiter.
The Sun in Virgo until September 22 empowers you to refine your health and fitness goals, with the New Moon in your sign on September 15 supporting this. In October, it’s good to take an objective look at your life, as now is the time to gain more respect and success.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You feel those close to you are impinging on your precious freedom in September; try compromise to keep relationships harmonious. In October, the need to adjust continues. Don’t neglect your health, and strive to be flexible in mind as well as body; this will help you balance your goals with your responsibilities.
