Behind the scenes Cover girl Serena Williams arrived for our afternoon photo shoot on a damp, grey Hollywood afternoon, wearing casual, chic clothes. She could easily have been on her way to a luncheon meeting, and yet the tennis champ showed a playful, lighthearted side. Shy at first, Williams warmed up to everyone once the music began playing from her iPod selections—they ran the gamut from Motown to disco to oldies. For snacks, she fell back on her favourites, red licorice and peanut butter cups.

How do you define
Balanced Living?
Henry Fonseca Position at Viva Finance Administrator On balanced living Balanced living is, of course, unique to every individual. In my opinion, it always comes down to how well we take care of ourselves. We invest a sizeable amount of our time on work and family, yet often neglect to take care of our own needs. Our society values a strong work ethic above everything else and, while work usually takes up most of our adult lives, I feel that it is important to make sure you set some time apart to focus on yourself. This might mean something as simple as treating yourself to a favourite chocolate after a long week at work, or de-stressing over a cup of coffee while listening to your friend’s facetious remarks. It’s probably easier to take care of the stress that naturally accompanies everyday life if you just take a moment to simmer down and treat yourself.

Use the season’s bold and beautiful colours to make your eyes the focal point of your entire look. Rich purples or emerald greens are the perfect shades for a dramatic lid, and a dab of glistening shimmer to the inner corners will create an illusion of a larger eye. A neutral lip stain will give your lips a natural fullness as a final touch. To amp the fl irt factor, think volume and waves for your elegant locks.

NAILING There’s more to gorgeous nails than just aesthetics—it’s also about your overall health by lena grady
I
t was a monthly tradition for 30-year-old Cathy. She and her friends would meet at a local nail salon and get manicures and pedicures while catching up on gossip. During a recent visit, Cathy’s nail technician pointed out the irregular, deep ridges on her nails, making her wonder if it was a sign of something happening below the surface. Nail issues can indicate anything from vitamin deficiencies to a number of underlying health conditions. We turned to Meghan Bauer, a naturopathic doctor at the ISIS Naturopathic Clinic in Toronto, for more information. “Ridges can be caused by a vitamin B deficiency that results in fragility and appears as horizontal and vertical ridges in the nails,” she explains. If your nails are brittle and break easily, it could be from a lack of vitamin A and calcium. Rippled nail surfaces are also sometimes an early sign of arthritis or psoriasis—many skin disorders can affect your nail growth.

beauty tips Hangnails, a nagging concern for many women, can be caused by a lack of protein, folic acid or vitamin C. If your nails are spooning, where they look scooped out, you could be iron deficient, which can make nails soft. And those all too common white spots on your nails? They can indicate a zinc deficiency. COLOUR CLUES
The colour of your nails is also important, says Toronto naturopathic doctor Chris Habib. Odd curved shapes, otherwise known as clubbing, can mean anything from congenital heart disease, lung disease or lung cancer, to infl ammatory bowel disease. For example, if the nail plate turns white, this can indicate liver disease (usually cirrhosis), congestive heart failure or diabetes. Nails can also get white spots, white bands or transverse lines, from more than just a lack of zinc. The white bands can indicate arsenic poisoning or carbon monoxide poisoning, explains Habib.

yeast. A few drops can be applied to the area three times a day. Black walnut is another strong antifungal herb that is useful when taken internally as a treatment for nail fungus. If you’ve checked in with a health care provider and ruled out anything serious, there are ways to combat common nail issues caused by vitamin deficiencies. Habib recommends fi rst trying biotin, an essential water-soluble B vitamin, that can treat brittle fi ngernails, particularly in women. You can also increase your levels of zinc, calcium, folic acid and omega-3s after you’ve discussed any dietary issues with your doctor or a nutritionist. BEAUTIFICATION
Once you’ve looked at the causes of your nail issues, it’s time to beautify your hands and feet. For keeping nails at their best, the pros suggest wearing gloves while using harsh cleaning products (or just using natural products that won’t harm your nails) or doing work outdoors.
Fungus is another main culprit of issues with fi ngernails and toenails. “A lack of friendly bacteria in the intestines leads to fungus under and around the nails,” explains Bauer. Other causes include warm, humid environments; ingrown toenails or injuries—and your risk increases if you have diabetes or agerelated health issues.
At night, treat your nail bed with cuticle oil; apply a thick shea butter cream and pop on a pair of gloves to lock in the moisture. You can do the same for your feet by wrapping them in plastic wrap and putting on socks.
NATURAL REMEDIES
Use a nail buffer to lightly take the ridges off the tops of nails, but don’t overdo it—you don’t want to damage the nail bed. Then apply the colour of your choice.
If you’re a high-risk patient, seek medical attention. Otherwise, you can treat fungus at home. Bauer suggests garlic cloves, as garlic is one of the best natural antiseptics. “Garlic cloves can be crushed and applied directly to the affected area. And they can be eaten for extra help,” she says. You can also try tea tree oil, another powerful natural antiseptic that is very useful in fighting fungal infections, including athlete’s foot and
Want to get that polished look without the chemicals? Look for nail polishes free of the three main toxins—a trio of formaldehyde, Toluene, DBP or parabens. Many drugstore brands are actually free of these ingredients, so you can paint away with confidence. For nail polish removers, look for an acetone-free version, and make sure to give your nails a break between polishes.

Smashing summer looks Longer days mean more sun and more heat. Here’s what celebrities do to look great all summer long. • by bonnie siegler & e. z. guler-tuck
GWYNETH PALTROW
NICOLE RICHIE
MICHELLE TRACHTENBERG
OLIVIA WILDE
The actress with the porcelain complexion gets that luminous look using Sonya Dakar’s Flash Facial, a one-minute exfoliating gel that sloughs away dull skin and delivers antioxidant-rich resveratrol. Paltrow says the summer elements dry out her skin, and the antioxidant ingredients help nourish it.
For a sensational summer look, Richie chooses a hot pink lipstick. Her favourite is YSL’s Rouge Volupte Perle in Sparkling Fuchsia, which also gives her look a retro feel. When she’s just going out for daytime errands, she uses a high-shine pink with L’Oreal Infallible Le Gloss in Pink Topaz.
Even in summer, Trachtenberg keeps her skin pale, so she wears purple eyeliner to brighten up her eyes. “Line bottom lashes, then smudge sideways from inner to outer corners,” says makeup pro Melanie Inglessis. She likes Maybelline Color Tattoo by Eye Studio in Painted Purple.
Her hair routine is very simple and consistent throughout the year—especially during the summer months when she lets her hair dry naturally as often as possible. “I like Kiehl’s shampoo and Kerastase’s Masque Oleo-Relax, which is great for dry strands. I don’t blow dry my hair, and that’s why it’s healthy,” Wilde says.
THE NATURAL WAY
THE NATURAL WAY
Stick to cleansing masks and scrubs containing beta carotene* that deep clean the pores, leaving the skin soft and smooth. The body converts beta carotene into vitamin A, a powerful antioxidant that can prevent skin cancer.
Make a statement this summer with hot pink lips! Pamper that pout with a lipstick containing rosemary herbal extract*. Subtle hints of this herb found in lip care products help combat infl ammatory diseases and cancer-causing agents.

The skin around the eye area is thin and delicate, so whatever’s going on underneath that is much more visible on the surface. Here are some ways to keep your eyes looking bright and healthy: LIFESTYLE:
DIET AND NUTRITION:
w Keep the eye area well moisturized. w Gently massage under the eye area to get blood flowing and decrease the dark circles. w Eat well, sleep plenty and get exercise. w Wear sunglasses. Don’t overexpose yourself to the sun, especially without eye protection. w Apply something cool to the surface of the skin—you can even leave your favourite eye cream/gel in the fridge. w Use topical products with vitamins C and E for supple, soothing protection. w Try an ophthalmologist-tested, moisturizing under-eye concealer that contains brightening/light reflecting agents and is one shade lighter than your natural skin tone. Remember that opposite colours neutralize each other. That is, orange neutralizes blue, so if you have blueish undereye circles, try a warm, peachy shade.
w To avoid swelling, minimize your intake of sodium. w Eat lots of fruits and vegetables to get your boost of antioxidants and protect your cells from damage by free radicals. w Drink lots of fluids, especially water. w Don’t drink much soda and coffee. w Try to maintain a constant healthy weight. w Eat more raw foods; don’t reheat food too often. NATURAL INGREDIENTS/VITAMINS AND MINERALS:
Prices may vary by location.
w Place cool cucumber slices over closed eyes to de-puff. w Drink chamomile tea to soothe from the inside out. w Take a vitamin B complex to keep energy production in the cells up. w Take vitamin A to prevent skin from becoming dry and fragile. w Try vitamin C, iron and copper to encourage the production of collagen, which will support your skin’s resiliency and ability to heal.

I have a mild case of rosacea. What are the natural remedies for dealing with it? I want to make sure it doesn’t get worse. Also, can I cover it up without making it worse, and what kind of makeup should I use? – May, Regina, S.K. Dear May, Rosacea is a common inflammation of the skin that can vary in severity. As your case is mild, you can keep it under control by avoiding certain triggers. Start by limiting spicy foods, alcohol, hot beverages, sun exposure, strong wind and cold weather. Eating a healthy diet and supplementing with fish oil can help keep inflammation down. I would also recommend supplementing with oregano oil, as it seems to eliminate the demodex skin mite that is associated with rosacea. Include plain yogurt or a probiotic in your diet to replenish the good bacteria in your intestines, as oregano oil can kill off some of the good bacteria as well.

Try using natural or organic skincare products that contain calming ingredients such as calendula, and avoid abrasive products. You can cover up redness with a mineral powder foundation, and for extra coverage, try applying a light application of a concealer that contains vitamin K to help with inflammation.
What about natural hair removal? Do the natural products work as well as any other if I want to remove leg and underarm hair? – Carrie, London, Ont. Dear Carrie, I am assuming that you are referring to natural hair removal methods such as sugaring or waxing. Sugaring can be inexpensive, as you mix the ingredients yourself and only require sugar, water and lemon juice. The paste should only adhere to the hair and not the skin, so some say it is less painful than waxing. It is quite the art, because usually it is removed by hand, although you can purchase kits that include sugar and strips. You can also purchase wax that contains natural ingredients that can be heated in the microwave. My biggest concern is that the temperature should be correct to avoid burning your skin. The most important factor for efficacy is the technique of removing the hair. This takes practice to do without breaking the hair or irritating the skin. It can sometimes result in quite a mess. Waxing or sugaring done by a trained professional would be my first choice. When it’s done properly, it is quite effective and can save you time and aggravation.

Food cures Isn’t it great that food is one of the best things in life— and it’s the key to solving so many health issues? Just by eating healthier foods, we can slow down the aging process, and get a better night’s sleep. Plus, research is showing that by tweaking the diet—checking for food sensitivities and removing sources of toxins—we can even minimize conditions such as ADHD.

Vanquishing free radicals
Antioxidants are molecules that slow or prevent oxidation. They can slow down the aging process by reducing the number of free radicals in the body. Free radicals are natural byproducts of many cellular processes; however, excess free radicals can damage body cells and accelerate aging. Free radicals can also be caused by lifestyle factors such as smoking, pollution, diet, and sun exposure. They can begin a chain reaction that ends with the damage of your cells.
Antioxidants will stop the chain reaction, remove the free radicals, and inhibit further oxidization. Studies have shown that antioxidants can also slow aging by attacking free radicals that weaken your immune system and make your body susceptible to degeneration and disease. Best food sources
Antioxidants are found in foods such as fruits, vegetables and green tea. A Statistics Canada poll reported that about half of Canadian adults do not eat five servings of fruits and vegetables a day, the minimum recommendation from Health Canada. What makes us look and feel young? Or old? Weight, skin condition, heart health, joint flexibility and mobility—these are some of the keys to a long and healthy life. It’s refreshing to know that we can minimize the negative effects of aging and emphasize the positive, with the help of exercise, nutritious foods and quality supplements. Here's to turning back the clock and living a long, happy and healthy life!

With baby boomers moving into their middle years, researchers around the world are constantly developing ways to slow down the aging process. ave you ever felt like you’re tumbling down a rabbit hole all night long? Neither fully asleep nor fully awake but when it’s time to get up, you feel like you’ve been clobbered by a brick?
For many people, this is just a normal night, and unfortunately, this routine can be hard to change. Whether it’s difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep or frequent waking at night in a sweat, these situations may have different causes—and need to be addressed in different ways. Routines for rest
Sleep is an essential function for repairing and restoring your mind and body. Ideally, people should sleep uninterrupted for seven to nine hours each night.
Tired of waking up tired? Natural supplements can help—and so can changing your habits by brian davies
One of the first things to consider when putting people back on a course to nightly bliss is sleep hygiene. Restful sleep relies on routine. Ideally, bedtime should occur at the same time each night, and the bedroom temperature should be kept at about 20 degrees Celsius. No light should be visible, and no electronic gizmos should be in the room where you sleep. In general, the rule is that the bedroom should only be used for two things: sleep and sex. People who have trouble sleeping should try not to eat too late at night, and should try eliminating caffeine for several weeks. A warm bath before bed can be helpful to support relaxation. Exercise, to the point of sweating, is also a surefire way to guarantee a good night’s sleep. People doing shift work can take melatonin during the daytime. Increasing melatonin naturally requires total darkness, which is an essential component of proper sleep.

health feature One other little hint is that alcohol consumption in the evening may help put people to sleep; however, the likelihood of staying asleep is low, so save the wine for special occasions. Try replacing your nightly belt with some meditation, guided imagery and/or deep breathing exercises, as these will work a lot better to improve sleep quality over time.
} VIVA
With difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep, melatonin, 5-HTP or a prescription of L-trytophan, a natural melatonin precursor, can be a lifesaver. It is also often important to add in niacinamide to the sleep regime when people have a busy mind.
SLEEP SUPPLEMENTS
When it comes to sleep troubles that require supplemental intervention, whether difficulty falling or staying asleep, I fi nd one of the key nutrients to start with is magnesium. It’s a natural relaxant and is often enough to help improve sleep quality on its own.
For women who are overheating at night or entering menopause or perimenopause, a natural progesterone prescription can also dramatically improve sleep quality and eliminate nightly bouts of sweating.

Separating the facts from the fiction about adult ADHD by sarah o’connor
W
hen we think of “attention deficit hyperactivity disorder” (ADHD), we often associate it with children. However, about 60 per cent of people affected as children will experience the symptoms of ADHD into adulthood. Symptoms can include impaired concentration, distractibility, hyperactivity and impulsivity.

Thankfully, there are natural and effective ways of managing these symptoms. Naturopathic doctor Urszula May of Naturopathic Foundations in Markham, Ontario, points to environmental toxicity as the primary cause of the symptoms of ADHD in children and adults alike.

Exposure to toxins
“The root causes are very similar, whether you’re a child or an adult,” she says. “If you’re talking about kids, you’re looking at whether their mom smoked or there was lead exposure [during gestation] or something like that. When you’re talking about adults, it still could have been something they were exposed to in childhood, but it could also be exposure on the job site; for instance, if you’re a painter and you’re inhaling fumes all day, or you’re working in a chemical plant or you live in a really toxic area.” Other factors that can come into play include diet, exercise, thyroid disorders, allergies and sensitivities, even intestinal parasites and funguses. While there are many allopathic drugs on the market to treat ADHD, the side effects can be serious. “You’re either going to be on a psycho-stimulant, like Ritalin, or an anti-depressant, something like Prozac, or on both of them,” explains May. “And we know very well that both of those things cause liver damage and increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, heart failure and stroke. Those are pretty significant side effects that aren’t that uncommon. The question is, at what point do the negative consequences of taking the drug outweigh the consequences of not taking them?” Alternatives to drugs
If an adult who has been diagnosed with ADHD or who is experiencing symptoms of ADHD chooses not to take these drugs, there is a variety of effective naturopathic treatments available. “The very first thing I do with everybody, no matter what the symptom picture, is look at the diet,” says May. “Diet and exercise are the basis for healthy living. We check the diet, we check deficiencies in the diet and then we check for food sensitivities. “Once those things are out of the way, we look at other things, like improving digestive health with supplements. And then exercise— there’s massive amounts of research, especially with the adult population, that shows how effective regular exercise is in managing symptoms and really getting rid of these concerns.” By adopting a holistic approach, ADHD and its symptoms can be effectively managed in children and adults, without the scary side effects.

ou work hard and play even harder. You eat well and stay hydrated, so what else do you need to support your body and enhance your performance? Awareness around sports nutrition is growing, and not just among seasoned athletes, but also in gyms, fitness studios and the media. Sports Nutrition is not new—it dates back to the ancient Greeks and Romans, who would incorporate bread, wine and meat to support their training regime. While this seems primitive in comparison to the plethora of advanced formulations on the market today, the essentials are there: fueling and nourishing. But what else does a body require for support and performance? Hydration and nourishment
The focus should be on hydration and nourishment for preparation, energy and muscle recovery, metabolism support and antioxidants for oxidative damage as a result of “stress” the body endures during exercise. This equation then has to be further broken out to accommodate the individual’s personal constitution and expenditure of energy; there is certainly not a “one size fits all” nutrition program. To make navigating the shelves of performance supplements even more daunting, there is the occasional inclusion of questionable ingredients that have been called out in the media for their undesirable side effects.

VIVA }
Other performance enhancing ingredients to look for are branched chain amino acids (BCAA), which give you the building blocks to prepare for exercise, and creatine, which despite its association with extreme strength training, is naturally produced by the body and strengthens and repairs skeletal muscle. Natural sources of electrolytes such as coconut water— which contains sodium, potassium, chloride and other naturally occurring electrolytes—replenish what is lost during exercise and sport. activfuel+ from Genuine Health is designed for pre- and during exercise and to include 5 functions: 1. Build and prepare: with whey protein isolate and BCAAs 2. Fuel: innovative carb sources from agave, brown rice and beet 3. Speed and strength: with taurine and kola nut 4. Rehydrate and replenish: with electrolytes and coconut water 5. Go the distance: with creatine, Rhodiola, vitamin B1, magnesium and apple peel In addition, the formula contains no questionable or unsafe ingredients, and has suggested dosages for all bodies and their levels of activity. Another important factor is to read the fine print for the usual suspects: colourants, flavour additives and questionable sweeteners.
Sophisticated research
Fortunately, Sports Nutrition research is becoming increasingly sophisticated, and has unearthed effective, natural ingredients that perform synergistically for all stages of activity. Sports recovery drinks, protein and energy bars are familiar to most, and have been around for some time, offering pre and post workout support. What is coming to light is that it is not only important to prepare your body for rigorous activity, but to also fuel your body during activity for efficient carbohydrate and oxygen delivery to cells, ensuring peak endurance and performance. Fueling during activities also prevents loading up on carbohydrates beforehand. Instead, you’re ingesting easy-to-digest, low glycemic index sources of carbohydrate, which have steady absorption, avoiding blood sugar spikes.
activfuel+ contains no artificial ingredients, preservatives, flavours, or sweeteners and is available in delicious and refreshing black raspberry lemonade flavour, with or without caffeine. Another feature – the beautiful colour is due in part to the addition of beet juice, which opens blood vessels and helps deliver O2, and in studies has been shown to increase endurance by 16 per cent! “I enjoyed increased energy and strength in the gym. In fact, I set a personal best in one of my exercises! Great product.” Bruce Krahn - Author, The Fat Fighter Diet Article written by Emily Aucoin, BA, RHN

health advice from the pros dr. brian davies, bsc, nd
This is embarrassing. I seem to have a lot of gas and bloating no matter what I eat. Is there some kind of enzyme I need to take as a supplement? I’ve heard of this. Or could there be some other reason for this condition? – Marc, Ottawa, Ont. Dear Marc, Gas and bloating are some of the most common concerns that I see in my office. The cause is typically one of two things: inappropriate overgrowth of bacteria and/or fungus in the intestines, or sensitivity reactions to certain foods. What I do is request that people eliminate, for at least 30 days, specific foods that may be triggering the irritation of the gut or microflora. These foods are typically legumes (beans and nuts), dairy and gluten grains. I also ask people to eliminate the consumption of all raw fruits and salads during this time, to reduce the feeding of microflora. One to two tablespoons of coconut oil on food each day can address possible intestinal microbial overgrowth. Once symptoms subside, it is essential to figure out the triggers, by reintroducing different food groups and observing at what point the gas and bloating return. I would suggest an introduction interval of at least two days, to avoid any confusion.

by jessica uniac Occupation: Singer/Songwriter What’s your secret food vice? A good tomato soup! What is your number one comfort food? Iced cappuccinos. What is your biggest food challenge? Chocolate. It’s not really a challenge, though. If it’s in the house, I’ll eat it. What keeps you eating a balanced diet? Having to be on a stage every night! I went a month or so of sucking my gut in and I was like, this is no fun. Time to nix the after-show fast food runs. Any allergies or dislikes? I just can’t eat cooked tomatoes. Yet I love tomato soup. Weird, I know. They have to be puréed. What must you always have in your fridge? Fruit juice and raspberries. What are some of your go-to meals? Because I’m on the road a lot, I like sandwiches and subs. Strangest food you’ve tried? Chicken hearts. What’s your favourite dish or food to eat in the summer? In the winter? Seafood and mashed potatoes all year, baby. I forgot to mention how much I love digging in to a steaming mountain of peppered and buttery mashed potatoes. What is your favourite meal to make for guests in your home? Secret recipe chicken enchiladas. What is your most used/favourite ingredient to cook with and why? Cilantro. Fresh herbs in general, really. In different combinations, they can take a dish in any direction. What have you been busy with over the last year? I just finished a nationwide tour, and my third album called DIRT that will be out on April 24. Between the studio, songwriting and touring—which has taken a lot of time—I’ve also been lucky enough to spend some time at the ocean with my family. It’s a busy life and a good one. What’s next for you? We’re ramping up for the album release that will include a college tour and then a round of summer festivals.

Serena Williams bounces back from a crazy year and gets ready to fight for supremacy by bonnie siegler • photography by elisabeth caren assisted by shane o’donnell and liz bretz styling by angel terrazas for urban siren hair by mitzi williams makeup by carlene kearns for margaret maldonado agency
ressed in black pants and a sleeveless top, a very athletic yet glamorouslooking Serena Williams walks into a Hollywood photo studio all smiles. Tucked under her arm she’s carrying a little canine companion, sister Venus’ dog Khan (named after singer Chaka Khan). The woman who captured the U.S. Open at age 17 and has gone on to break tennis records ever since—including two Olympic gold medals in women’s doubles—is known as much for dominating the courts as she is for her colourful tennis garb.

“I don’t wear a lot of black,” says the 5’9” powerhouse who has 27 Grand Slam titles to her name. “I can’t say ‘never’ to anything. I like really bright colours because I think they brighten up any mood and can make me feel sexy. They also empower me as a woman, especially sitting in a boardroom full of men.” Williams says her own fashion line this summer will reveal cheerful hues ranging from orange to yellow, green to bright purple “and my favourite, pink. Just feel-good colours and clothes — that’s my story.” Feminine side
Williams likes to surprise her fans by revealing her feminine side, something not often seen on the court. After all, it’s her agile, muscular body that she relies on to get her to the ball with lightning speed. “I think each of those characteristics helps balance me and everything else in my life,” she says. “A lot of people say to me ‘wow, you look different in person’ and I say ‘well, I’m not sweating and grunting.’ It’s a big difference when I’m working so hard in tennis—that’s my job. But being an athlete makes me never want to give up on things; whatever I believe in, I fight for and will do it again and again until it’s right.” At 30, an age when most female tennis players hang up their rackets, Williams is competing in this summer’s Wimbledon tournament, and believes her body can still stand the rigours of stiff competition and practice. “I think I can; I feel really young again,” she says. “Just the other day when warming up, I was thinking ‘I don’t feel too bad overall. This is really kind of cool.’” A bad year
A feeling of optimism could not come at a better time for Williams, who faced various health challenges last year. This left everyone wondering if the greatest female player
of her generation could reign supreme again. Williams’ health scares began shortly after she won Wimbledon in July 2010, with two right-foot operations due to ripped tendons after stepping on a shard of glass. Then, in February 2011, she experienced a lifethreatening episode, suddenly finding it difficult to breathe, and soon was diagnosed with a pulmonary embolism (PE). “I didn’t know that shortness of breath was a main symptom of a PE,” reflects Williams. “I went to see my doctor, complaining of difficult breathing, and he found the embolism after doing a CAT scan of my lungs. I’m so thankful he did.” Adding to her medical problems, she soon developed a hematoma in her stomach, requiring another surgery. “I was giving myself blood thinner injections for my embolism and unfortunately, hit a blood vessel, which couldn’t clot,” she recalls. Having always been a vibrant, active and physical woman, Williams went into a funk during the ensuing recuperation period. “I couldn’t perform the functions I normally did, such as tennis, driving, exercising…even walking, so I became somewhat depressed,” she says. “For a person like myself who is used to going 200 mph every day, I found I had a problem becoming stagnant and slow.” Busy life
With all that in the past, Williams has the energy to stay busy with many interests. She has enrolled at the University of Massachusetts, majoring in business, nutrition and health; her clothing line and accessories are sell-outs at HSN.com; she has become a certified nail technician in preparation for her upcoming nail collection with Hair Tech; she’s filmed an appearance on Lifetime’s Drop Dead Diva as an ace family attorney, and is involved with several charities.

“I do a lot of work where I send girls to school in Africa and the United States who can’t afford it. I don’t talk about that a lot because I want to do it for the pure love of it,” Williams states. And let’s not forget her regular workouts that include elliptical training, running, Plyometrics, bike riding and serious stretching. “Stretching is really good for me as an athlete,” Williams says. “I don’t lift weights, but I keep very busy with exercise…and then I’m on the court too.” REDUCING STRESS
So with this flurry of off -court activity, Williams says she has become more emotional than ever due to lack of sleep, only getting about five to six hours of shut-eye a night. “Th at’s okay,” she quickly says. For some stress reduction, reading of fiction helps (“when I’m not reading textbooks”), watching reality TV, playing games on her iPod, laughing with sister Venus, and “prayer, which is important to me. Faith helped me get through some pretty tough times.” Nutritional staples that help sustain energy reserves and maintain focus include a protein shake for breakfast or a fresh green juice. “Cucumber juice with ginger—that really gives me energy,” Williams says. “I’m not a big morning eater, and I don’t drink coffee. Beans have become a really big staple for me because they’re both protein and carbohydrates. In fact, dinner last night was a black-eyed pea soup with a big salad. I haven’t eaten meat in over a decade, very little chicken or fish, and I’ve been omitting wheat from my diet and will only have it from time to time.”
PEANUT BUTTER
Yet Williams reveals it’s hard to pass up red licorice or chocolate-covered peanut butter cups. “They are so good that I’ll have fun with those things sometimes and go a little crazy…. but you know, it’s not really crazy. It’s just normal and is another thing that helps keep me balanced. I think being crazy is saying no to everything,” she says. As for relationships, Williams admits she is not in love at present, but hopes to be soon for the sheer “companionship it gives me and that youthful feeling. Plus, I’m really happy then, and that’s a good sensation.” READY TO WIN
Williams says she feels strong and competitive once again, and is looking forward to a winning year and beyond: “I would say this year is just beginning for me, and I’m only getting better. Hey, I’m still competing, and I wondered if I ever would again, during those medical struggles.” Yet with all her charismatic court displays, the woman whose name is synonymous with tennis champ, and temperamental diva, would rather be remembered for her personal reality checks. “I don’t really care what others think of me because life is too short to worry about what someone else says or thinks about you,” she says. “I’d rather people think of me as a real person—a really funny person who cares about education and helping those who want to further theirs…..Extremely caring, really funny….and young.”

balanced living
S
itting on the patio of her new southern California home, Mary Murphy, co-host and judge for popular, Emmy-nominated So You Think You Can Dance, is smiling and laughing. This is nothing unusual for the effervescent and enthusiastic champion ballroom dancer until she tells you why she’s smiling now. “I’m so grateful that I’m cancer-free because I was so upset with myself that I didn’t go in earlier for surgery,” explains Murphy, who waited three years to have her cancerous tumour removed. “At first they said they couldn’t be sure it was cancer with just the needle biopsy I had, but that if it was, it was a slow-growing cancer. They probably shouldn’t have told someone like me that, because I get really busy. I was told to check it again in six months—when I called, my doctor said I hadn’t been in for two and half years. My heart just sank because at that point, I was already starting to show signs.”
ENERGY DROP
In fact, Murphy could feel the tumour, friends were telling her they could see it and her usual high spirits and energy were severely diminished. “I woke up after the surgery to find out I had thyroid cancer,” she says. The 5’8” dancer who travels worldwide as a guest host for international versions of her show, acknowledges that the cancer was a wake-up call. After the surgery, she embarked on her current balanced health odyssey that has her eating nutritious foods and exercising regularly. SO LONG, DAIRY
“My holistic practitioner says dairy has been linked to cancer, plus I have high cholesterol, so I’ve all but given up dairy, and only have red meat once a month,” Murphy says. “I also don’t eat soy due to its cancer link, so it’s fresh fruit and vegetables in my dressing room…and nuts.” She supplements with calcium, red yeast rice, Q-10, magnesium, selenium “and others that I line up in a little kit for the week. And I don’t take anything randomly, because my blood is tested regularly.” KEEPING FIT
Now that she’s simply trying to tone and keep fit, Murphy does resistance movement exercises and occasional yoga, and takes part in her own dance exercise program, “Core Rhythms.” “We offer it in my dance studio twice a day,” says Murphy, who still owns and runs her own dance school in San Diego, California. She sometimes will go and take her own classes there. “When I was dancing professionally, my life was balanced only when I would dance. Balanced living has changed for me because it’s not about your weight. It’s about how we’re treating the inside of our body as well. I used to be so skinny and could eat like a football player. Then I learned that you can look fantastic on the outside and be in the worst health on the inside. I want to be healthy inside and out.”

Jean Chatzky says consistency is key to health and finances by bonnie siegler
T
he author of seven bestselling books on financial topics and a regular on the Today show, Jean Chatzky is keenly aware of the current financial crisis affecting everyone. She is also aware of the effect that stress can have on overall health.
“The key to helping someone out of debt is consistency, and that’s the key with health as well,” says the Wisconsin native now living in New York with her family. “My schedule is actually a lot more flexible than people think. If I’m not on Today in the morning, I exercise as soon as I get my kids off to school. If I am on, either I skip that day or I jump on the treadmill after I get home.” The petite, 5’2” financial whiz says fitting exercise into her daily schedule can sometimes be challenging; however, she makes a concerted effort to run four to five miles at least three times a week. “And one day on the weekend, I try to get in at least one long run.” All this helps to balance out her favourite foods. “I make a mean spaghetti and clams, and a killer chocolate chip banana bread; I also enjoy following most of Ina Garten’s recipes,” she says. “Let me say that I strive for balance. There are a few things I won’t stock just because they’re ‘healthy.’ Still, I do try to make sure there are veggies at every meal.” Not the food police
Other nutritional staples include: 2 per cent yogurt, turkey breast, turkey meatballs, 1 per cent milk (“I hate skim”), granny smith apples, “and Hershey bars in the freezer. I’m definitely not the food police.” In fact, Chatzky says sometimes “balance” doesn’t fit into her lifestyle at all. “Well, sometimes balance doesn’t believe in me. Let’s say I successfully juggle. There are some days I’m good at work, others I’m better at home. If I can get most of it done, most of the time, I try to give myself a break.” Running is free
With many people nowadays working multiple jobs in order to support their family or their lifestyle, Chatzky says fitting fitness into an already strained budget shouldn’t cause anyone stress. “Follow my lead: run. Or if you don’t like to run, then walk. Just get outside and move. It’s inexpensive; you don’t need a gym membership. Plus, just getting out there doing something is great. “For me, exercising does give me some balance in life.” That and cooking or watching reruns of House and Friends. “Oh, and new episodes of Castle. They certainly help me relax and rejuvenate.” mor e out of life 2012 vivamagonline.com

Peach pleasures
They’re one of the local-fruit highlights of the summer. They’re delicious right off the tree or in desserts. They even add a sweet kick to savoury dishes. Peaches are a treat you can’t beat, and they’re in season in Canada when we have more time to savour them. Interestingly, no two peaches taste the same. Eat them every day for their vitamin, fibre and antioxidant content, and for their fantastic taste.

PERFECT GRILLED CHICKEN Serves 4 to 6 people
1 whole chicken weighing 3-4 pounds (1.5 -2 kilograms) Salt and freshly ground pepper ¾ cup (180 ml) olive oil 2 tablespoons (20 g) fresh rosemary, finely chopped 2 tablespoons (20 g) fresh thyme, finely chopped 1 tablespoon (10 g) hot pepper flakes Juice of 1 lemon 4 cloves garlic, minced Two bricks wrapped in aluminum foil Sea salt 1 lemon, cut in wedges 1. To butterfly the chicken, use a sharp pair of poultry shears or kitchen scissors to cut down both sides of the backbone. Remove and discard the backbone. Flip it around, and, using your palm, press down on the bird until it is flat. 2. Place chicken in a square baking dish. Season with salt and pepper. 3. In a small bowl, combine olive oil, rosemary, thyme, pepper, lemon juice and garlic. 4. Coat the chicken with the marinade and refrigerate, covered, for 8 to 12 hours. Remove chicken from refrigerator at least 30 minutes before cooking. 5. When cooking chicken, preheat barbecue grill to medium-high heat. Warm the bricks wrapped in aluminum foil for about 15 minutes. 6. When the bricks are hot, turn off one burner to cook chicken with indirect heat. Place chicken on the grill, breast side down, on the side where the burner is off. 7. Place the bricks on top of the chicken. Close lid and cook 20 to 25 minutes, or until the skin begins to brown slightly. 8. Flip the chicken over and place it on the side of the grill where the burner is lit. (The skin should be above; otherwise it will char). Put the bricks on the chicken again and cook, covered, 10 to 15 minutes. 9. Remove bricks and turn chicken one last time. Cook a few more minutes, until skin is crispy and the temperature of the thickest part of thigh reaches 165°F (75°C). 10. Remove chicken from heat and let stand for 10-15 minutes on a cutting board, covered with foil. 11. Cut the chicken in pieces and sprinkle with salt. Serve with lemon wedges.

YOUR LIFE A different perspective What are you doing this summer? Chances are you’ll be indulging in some well-deserved time out. Whether you’re travelling across the ocean, getting into the great Canadian wilderness or relaxing in your own back yard, it’s the season when you’ll distance yourself from routine. The perspective you gain from that different viewpoint can be transferred back into your everyday life—all it takes is a little focus.

health issue: chronic fatigue Symptoms: I woke up one morning feeling tired and weak. I was under increased stress, and had been stricken with a bad flu. After getting over it, I decided to do a cleanse, hoping it would help. The cleanse was too strong for me, and I got quite sick and had to discontinue it. My MD told me the fatigue was due to stress. I tried to live with it; however, my symptoms continued to worsen. After two years and another stressful period, I began to get panic attacks, I was cold all the time and I felt like my body was shutting down. I had a number of visits with specialists; all my test results came back normal. Health recommendations: I went to an acupuncturist, who recommended an acupuncture protocol along with diet modification, B12 injections, and a shift in exercise intensity towards lighter activity. The results: I’ve had a 50 per cent improvement in energy levels and overall wellbeing. I feel my best when I stick to a vegan, low-fat, raw food diet. I continue to work on improving my energy to 100 per cent, understanding that sometimes it takes time. Name: C aitlyn Age: 27 Occupation: Full-time administrative assistant and part-time student
health issue: Infertility Symptoms: Soon after getting married, my husband and I were eager to start a family. We tried for a year or so, and it then became apparent that we were going to need some extra help. I dealt with infertility for five years; trying IUI’s, IVF, surgery and acupuncture. We even went through the unsuccessful process of surrogacy with a family member. The odds were stacked against us, given my uterine deformities and family history of fertility issues, yet I wasn’t giving up. Health recommendations: I went through many treatments, from laser treatments for endometriosis to hormone therapy to help thicken my uterine lining. After five years of trying, I was tired, though still determined. I went to see a naturopathic doctor, and she recommended that I try an anti-inflammatory diet. The diet consisted of going gluten, dairy, red meat, sugar and alcohol-free. It sounded like a lot to eliminate; however, after the long road we had already travelled, it seemed worth it! The results: With all the different treatments I was on, my uterine lining was being monitored regularly. Shortly after starting the diet, the doctor noticed that the lining was starting to thicken. She said, “Whatever you’re doing, it’s working,” so I continued on the diet and successfully went on to do IVF. Name: Jill Age: 37 Occupation: Physiotherapist

health issues: candida, tendonitis and bottled-up rape trauma Symptoms: I had candida, a stomach issue that felt like an ulcer, and tendonitis in my right, dominant, arm. This was all coupled with a decades-old bottled-up rape trauma that I had yet to release. Health recommendations: I began yoga, meditation and massage for stress management. I also sought out the advice of a naturopathic doctor skilled in acupuncture. She was able to treat my elbow, along with a few other body aches. She also provided nutritional advice, and supplementation for managing the candida. Plus, she provided me with some much needed counselling for the rape. I had bottled this up for years, and it felt like such a relief to let it out. The results: This all resulted in much healing; my arm mended over time, the candida subsided and the ulceric feeling vanished. My energy levels increased, along with my flexibility and core stability through yoga. My diet slowly evolved away from drinking wine on a nightly basis, coupled with the eradication of deli meats, to eventually giving up meat altogether. I am on the path to self-actualization, constantly exploring new avenues of self and how I am affected by my surroundings. And I have forgiven and let go of the rape trauma I experienced at age 21. Name: Suzanne Age: 52 Occupation: Homemaker
health issue: tiredness and feeling of being unwell Symptoms: Shortly after moving to Vancouver from Montreal, I began to feel tired and generally unwell. Being relatively new to Vancouver, I thought I was just adjusting to the weather. My husband recommended that I see a naturopathic doctor. I was open to the idea, since I had been to an acupuncturist for migraines. Health recommendations: The naturopathic doctor made several recommendations. What resonated the most with me was the diet changes. I stopped eating foods that I was measured to be sensitive to, and I improved the quality of the foods I was eating. I also added a few nutritional supplements to my daily regimen. The results: Within a few weeks of making small changes to my diet, I realized my energy was returning, and I was beginning to feel myself. This was very encouraging, so I began to further experiment with my diet. I became aware of how foods affected my overall well-being, and I found it fascinating. The experience sparked my passion for healthy and delicious food. I am now studying to become a holistic nutritionist. At age 40, I feel more vibrant than ever! Online dating O
ne in four people meet their potential dates over the Internet nowadays, which is better odds than the traditional meet market venues most people no longer have the time or desire to frequent. However, as possibilities increase, so does competition. Th is means you have to wade through a lot more choices, and put a bigger effort into standing out.
It’s a jungle on there, so take time to portray yourself accurately, and choose wisely by rebecca rosenblat
• Create a catchy headline that focuses on who you’re trying to attract, versus information about yourself. “If you like Saturday golf and Sunday brunch over the New York Times, you’re my guy” is an invitation. “I like golf, brunches and reading the Times” is information signalling a mere possibility. The header can also be used as a fi lter. For example: “Looking for a fit 30-40-year-old male within 20 miles of Vancouver” may entice those who match your criteria, while encouraging others to move on.
HERE ARE SOME TIPS TO HELP YOU NEGOTIATE THE ONLINE DATING WORLD:
PICK A SITE: It’s always a great idea to work with two sites: one major, well-known site, and a boutique site that caters to a niche: ethnic background, religion, hobbies, or anything else that’s truly important to you. If you can pick sites that allow you to browse profi les for free, all the better, since you’ll be able to assess whether these people are a good fit for you. BUILD A PROFILE: • Be very honest about what you want and what you have to offer, ensuring that both sections are of a similar length.
MAKE A GOOD IMPRESSION: Most sites will include your response rate. Someone who responds only 25 per cent of the time can appear stuck-up. Someone who responds 75 per cent of the time will appear serious, and someone who responds 100 per cent of the time could come across as non-selective and desperate. Beyond that, some sites allow people to rate you once you’ve been on a date. Those who use old pictures, lie about their age/weight/looks etc. and don’t match up to their profi le will get a poor rating. So be honest, promise less and deliver more, and of course, don’t mention your past relationship woes. As for your image, in a photo or a face-to-face meeting, dress to impress—just don’t be overly seductive. Th is can do more harm than

sexual health good, by turning selective guys off, or provoking players to come on too strong. READ BETWEEN THE LINES: According to communication expert Dr. Albert Mehrabian, words only account for seven per cent of impression formation. The rest comes from body language, facial expression and tone of voice. However, when you’re dealing with written profi les and communication, words count for 100 per cent, as we endeavour to make ourselves look desirable. When viewing others’ profi les, try to hold off on judgment until you have more to go on; and always listen to your gut instinct—online or in person—since it’s more reliable than your internal conversations. PREVENT CONFUSION: When people have too many choices, they end up in an assessment mind-set, where decisions are made by comparing choices. The alternative is a locomotion mind-set, where decisions are based on whether something or someone is likely to help you reach your goals.
} VIVA
Studies show that the locomotion mind-set allows you to be satisfied with a choice that meets your needs. The assessment mind-set creates serious doubts, because comparison leads to a mind-set that’s more focused on what you’ll be passing up, versus getting excited about what you’ll be gaining. Due to the high number of choices on the Internet, people are in the assessment mind-set, so buyer beware! CHOOSE WISELY: Don’t confuse love with sex. It’s called “chemistry” because the chemicals in your brain are programmed to sway you into mating, by creating a high that falsely leads you to believe your lover is an ideal fit. Th is is why I tell people to run if they feel intense chemistry, since their decisions are probably made in an altered state. When it comes to love, however, you’re likelier to focus on factors that spell longevity, such as similar core values—which are most crucial in forging a healthy relationship. Now that you have a road map to negotiate your journey, all that’s left is for me to say is bon voyage!

HEAVENLY MASSAGE
At the 18,000-square-foot Spa & Salon at Vdara, treatments include natural ingredients from herbs, flowers, fruits, vegetables and oils. If you prefer, as I did when visiting Vdara’s rooftop pool, you can enjoy a complete spa experience with a refreshing juniper and cypress detoxifying herbal massage in one of the six specially designated spa cabanas. The ceiling fan felt so cooling and heavenly on my body that I didn’t feel motivated to move a muscle. You can also sip on iced mineral water and munch on fresh fruit refrigerated in each cabana. I hadn’t set foot in a nightclub in quite some time, so when I entered
After an hour, I switched to Bar Vdara—much more my preferred setting of sophistication mixed with whimsy, right in the heart of the hotel. Though it was still a balmy 80 degrees outside, the outdoor swings overlooking the reflecting pool became the perfect place to taste one of the bar’s summer seasonal cocktails. I chose the apple and pear drink made with delicious pear puree, apple cider, house sweet and sour, Cruzan single barrel rum and cinnamon sugar rim. My friend chose the Agave Kiss: Herradura tequila, Chambord, double cream, raspberries and a dark chocolate rim. For a dining experience not to be missed, head over to MGM Grand and enjoy L’Atelier de Joel Rubuchon, Zagat’s rated “Best Las Vegas Restaurant.” So, while “Sin City” might be baking in the desert summer heat, it’s still a hub of excitement, with many options to play it cool.

Beauty Terminology
Beta carotene: Due to the body’s ability to rapidly convert beta carotene into vitamin A, both ingredients have been thought to be interchangeable. Just like vitamin A, this ingredient promotes good vision and overall health. The antiinflammatory qualities of beta carotene guard the skin against the season’s harmful environmental stressors.
Argan oil : Extracted from the argan tree, found only in Morocco, argan oil is valued for its nutrients and medicinal as well as cosmetic properties. Portions of the profits from the sale of products that contain this rare oil benefit women of the Berber tribe in Morocco. With high levels of vitamin E and fatty acids, argan oil, commonly used in hair care products, keeps moisture in and works to repair damaged hair.
Vitamin E: Best known for its antioxidant qualities, vitamin E is customarily used in antiaging products. It plays a starring role in the fight against damaging ultraviolet rays, and also helps keep the skin’s moisture barrier intact. Vitamin E is great for treating and even repairing skin conditions, making it a common ingredient in many skin care products and cosmetics.
Rosemary herbal extract: Latin for “dew of the sea,” this fragrant herb is native to the Mediterranean region and a member of the mint family. Rosemary contains two types of antioxidants, carnosic acid and rosmarinic acid. Both may be useful in preventing serious diseases such as cancer. When applied as a cosmetic, this essential oil strengthens the capillaries and rejuvenates the skin.

SNORING?
As recommended by Dr. Gifford-Jones M. D.
SLEEP APNEA?
Often snorers also have sleep apnea which causes being tired all day, high blood pressure, heart attacks, strokes, irregular heartbeats (per FDA website). Millions suffer needlessly and can stop their nightly ordeals.
To my surprise, after taking Bell Snoring & Sleep Apnea Relief #23 I really didn’t snore or gasp for air anymore. I sleep through the night and feel rested and refreshed in the morning. Mark Wilson, 40, Hudson, NH < Sleep apnea capsules worked first night! For last 15 years I had sleep apnea and my doctor made me buy a CPAP machine, which I could not use. Finally Bell #23 helped the first night and every night thereafter. Like a miracle. Unbelievable. Karen Braun, 67, Glace Bay, NS < For 20 years I was waking up frequently gasping for air. During the day I would start napping every time I would sit down, because I was tired. Since taking Bell #23 sleeping 6 hours is heaven. It made a substantial change in my life. Mary C. Myrick, 62, Jackson, MS <It is such a joy not having to use the CPAP machine. I have had sleep apnea for 10 years. #23 Using Bell#23, my wife says there is no more snoring or stoppage of breathing. It is such a joy to be able to roll to left or right with no hose or mask to deal with. Thank you Bell for a great relief. I suggest anyone with these problems to try it. You will be overjoyed with the results. Wayne Burse, 63, Beamsville, ON. < Lost my husband because of sleep apnea in 2011. I had sleep apnea, too. I was scared to go to bed and have an heart attack like my husband. After taking Bell #23 I can now sleep for 5-6 hours peacefully without gasping for air. A blessing. Suzie Weigel, 60, Chattanooga, TN $27.95 No need to make claims. Bell relays 100% truthful user’s free speech. No money is paid for it. No questions asked guarantee.

Heartburn Reflux By Dr. C. Hammoud, M.H.,PhD.
The USDA now recommends to eat 50% alkaline food (vegetables, legumes, salads, fruit, berries). Health professionals suggest 80% alkaline food. Unfortunately, North American people eat 90% acidic food (meat, noodles, rice, bread, pastries, sweets, junk food). If you cannot change your diet to USDA’s 50% or closer to 80% alkaline food, consider to supplement with a natural health product that helps to increase your pH alkaline level close to a healthy #7. Ask for Bell Acidic Stomach/Alkaline Balance #39. It’s inexpensive, has no side effects and may eliminate the need for anti-acid pills many people take. As a bonus, an alkaline balanced body prevents many illnesses. See guarantee printed on box. < Reflux gave me a sore throat and I could not sing in the church choir anymore. After taking Bell #39 I have no more reflux and rejoice in singing again. Helene Giroux, 65, Quebec, QC < Have family history of heartburn. For last 10 years I #39 suffered a lot with acid reflux. I told all family members about #39 being all natural, giving quick relief and having no side effects. Michael Fasheh, 49, Port Ranch, CA< Very happy with acid reflux relief. Last 4 years had increasing reflux despite taking anti-acid products. I am also trying to eat more alkaline food. Grzegorz Smirnow, 43, Mt. Prospect, IL < Suffered with reflux, choking and coughing. After starting Bell #39 I feel great. Amazed about the complete relief. Thanks from the bottom of my heart. Katarina Tusa, 63, North York, ON <Was sleeping sitting up to avoid reflux. I thought I had this health problem for life like my other family members. Bell #39 brought quick relief. Can sleep now normally, have more energy, feel great. Bell products are quite different. (June 22-July 22)
You may be spreading yourself too thin in June, so streamline your life and rethink relationships. Issues with others could come to a head around the Full Moon on July 3. Meditation helps you gain clarity and respond with wisdom; by late August, you could be passionately following your dreams. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) June 24 is an important new three-year period for you when revolutionary Uranus and powerful Pluto join together, urging you toward self improvement; you’ll want to transform your diet, health and fitness program. Take time off in July to relax and rethink, and don’t accept more responsibility than you can handle in August.
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) A Lunar Eclipse on June 4 affects your home and family, and you’ll have a chance to forget past differences. New opportunities for success appear in your professional life around June 19. From July 22, it’s a good time for a vacation. You’re energetic from mid-August, so focus on fitness goals.
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23) You’ve grown stronger over the past two years; June, July and August are the last few months of tests in your relationships before a difficult situation is finally resolved, and Saturn leaves your sign for another 25 years. Remain flexible and patient, and around August 16, expect the unexpected in relationships.
SCORPIO (Oct. 24 – Nov. 21) You may have felt uncertain for some months; however, you can gain clarity in late June. In July, you reconnect with people from the past who bring opportunities. You have to make tough choices in midAugust; this helps you move toward greater achievement in matters of health, finance and spiritual accomplishment.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) The Full Moon Eclipse on June 4 brings vitality and enthusiasm, as well as ideas to share. In the next few months, be open to other people because you can learn a lot about yourself by listening to them. Expect a busy, fun and communicative month in August.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Expect a self-reflective time in June. On July 3, around the time of the Full Moon in your sign, critical projects may come to a head, and you’ll find yourself reassessing some relationships. In August, Venus enters your area of relationships, sparking a new romance or a gentle, caring friendship.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Your challenge in June is to balance fun with responsibilities, and Venus retrograde may reveal what is lacking in some relationships. Your genius sparks when your ruler, Uranus, joins with Jupiter on July 22. Enjoy the playful Full Moon in your sign on August 1. It brings confidence, romance and joy.
PISCES (Feb. 19-Mar. 20) Remain flexible in June and go with the flow; yoga and meditation are helpful. A new romance may appear in July, though Mars in Libra reminds you to avoid giving
away too much too soon. The Full Moon in Pisces on August 31 reminds you to forgive yourself for past mistakes.
ARIES (Mar. 21-Apr. 19) June is a month of transitions, and the Full Moon in Sagittarius on June 4 causes you to rethink your future. After you’ve gone through an introspective, sensitive phase in mid-July, your confidence rebounds. By the time of the Leo New Moon on August 17, you feel vital, happy and pleased about recent decisions.
TAURUS (Apr. 20-May. 20) June 5 is a supernova day when your ruler, Venus, joins the Sun. You are charming and can achieve what you want. Avoid work-related stress in July, with yoga or trips to the spa. It’s wise not to make sudden moves on the job or at home until after mid-August.
GEMINI (May. 21-June. 21) You’re beginning a positive year ahead as expansive Jupiter enters your sign on June 11. Work with this energy by focusing on self improvement and awareness. In July, you feel impatient for change; however, you may need to rethink plans when your ruler, Mercury, turns retrograde from July 14 to August 8.
