Here’s why it may help you sleep. Normally, as daylight fades you get sleepy because nerve cells in your eyes send a message to your brain that triggers your pineal gland to slowly release melatonin into your bloodstream. When your sleep pattern is thrown out of balance by jet lag, irregular schedules, sleep disorders, age-related factors, or stress, a melatonin supplement can help get you back into a normal sleep pattern. Melatonin products from webber naturals may help you get to sleep, stay asleep longer, and improve sleep quality. Try some today.
Safety Precautions: Consult your physician for use beyond 4 weeks. If you are taking prescription medication or have a health condition, review label precautions and consult your doctor before using melatonin. Also consult your doctor for guidance on the use of melatonin for children. Do not take melatonin during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or if you have a seizure disorder. Do not use it with sedatives or immunosuppressive drugs. Do not operate machinery or a motor vehicle for 5 hours after taking melatonin.

As the flowers start to bloom and our attention turns to a new season, I am excited about hitting the streets in the early morning and running in the sunshine. It can be a challenge for moms who work outside the home and juggle so many tasks to focus on their own health and fitness. Some days, I have back-to-back TV appearances, meetings with my legal clients, planned activities with my two daughters and son, and a commitment to my husband to swing by a department store to pick up new ties and shirts. Rather than screaming and pulling my hair out, I opt for a quick run. I have found that running is not only the best way to nurture my heart health, it’s also a big stress reliever. It’s easy for women to forget that heart disease is the leading cause of death for women and that it’s not a “man’s disease.” By reducing stress, laying off the chips and dips and by running four to five days a week, I have also been able to manage my weight. It’s not always easy to get my runs in, but I have learned to treat them like business meetings and to schedule them on my calendar. They have become non-negotiable. It’s so much easier to love the woman I see in the mirror when I know I have stayed true to my run schedule even when I have had too many chips with my veggie salsa. In this issue of Viva, “Think Yourself Thin: How To Love The Woman In The Mirror”, addresses that woman and how to admire her. I also have learned that regular exercise is essential for dealing with so many other illnesses, even cancer. One of my dearest friends continued to walk regularly even after being diagnosed with breast cancer. Her commitment to her exercise was enormously helpful to her and her family as they all worked to support her. They found that accompanying her on walks—even very short ones—provided everyone an opportunity to reflect on the surrounding landscape and to reflect on positive memories. Viva Ambassadors share their inspirational stories about their personal and/or family struggles with cancer in this issue. I hope you have many sunshine-filled spring days and whether you are a runner, walker or Zumba dancer, making a commitment to regular exercise will help you spring forward.

For this issue’s food section, we decided to tackle an ingredient that not only has great cooking versatility but also fantastic health benefits (see page 38). We challenged Devan, Viva’s food ambassador, to create dishes based around turmeric. The dishes not only tasted great but were fragrant and colourful, as you can tell from the beautiful images starting on page 62. Speaking of images, we all met at Album Studios and worked again with long-time Viva food photographer and contributor Paula Wilson to transfer Devan’s beautiful creations to the pages of the magazine for you all to enjoy. TOUCH UPS FOR THE HEART Romance is in the air—amp up your date night look with these celebrity secrets BY BONNIE SIEGLER
SOPHIA LOREN
THE NATURAL WAY
“I have never wanted to wear makeup that made me look like someone else,” says the style icon, who recently teamed up with Dolce and Gabbana on a namesake red lipstick. “I never have to worry about this red bullet in a gold case. It’s me.”
To achieve the perfect red lip, apply Gabriel Cosmetics’ Gabriel Lipstick in Pomegranate with a precision lip brush. Its rich, smooth colour is formulated with aloe, helping to keep your lips soft and kissable all night long. (3.6g, $17.60)
DAKOTA JOHNSON Makeup artist Kate Lee loves to define Johnson’s eyes with the Chanel Illusion D’Ombre shadow in Fleur de Pierre. Just like a severe black shade, she says, this shimmery grey colour is perfect for achieving anything from “a subtle smudge along the lash lines to a dramatic, romantic smoky effect on the lids.”
THE NATURAL WAY For an ultra-sultry look, softly blend Faerie Organic’s Graphite Eyeshadow across your lids. Its shimmery, organic colour is formulated with mica, helping it to glide over fine lines for the ultimate smooth finish. (3g, $10)
AMY ADAMS
THE NATURAL WAY
Adams swears by the anti-aging properties in Tatcha’s Luminous Deep Hydration Firming Serum. “It really plumps up my skin and reduces fine lines,” she says. Formulated with red algae and hyaluronic acid, it nourishes skin from the inside out for a truly radiant look.
Smooth, moisturize and protect skin with Aubrey Organics’ Age-Defying Therapy Serum. With its blend of sea buckthorn oil, organic jojoba oil and vegetable glycerin, it rehydrates any dry, stressed complexion for a healthful glow. (9g, $14.95)
Keep your manicure looking fresh with Suncoat’s Clear Base/Top Coat. This water-based polish is crafted without the use of toxic ingredients like formaldehyde, dibutyl phthalate (DBP) and toluene, protecting and nurturing your natural nails. (11ml, $9.99)
“The best thing in the world is Poshe’s topcoat polish,” says the rocker. “If you use it as both a base and topper, your manicure will last three weeks, even in the winter when nails get brittle. It makes your manicure tough as nails.”

ashion has always been about the “it” bag or shoe. This season, jewellery is back with a vengeance. So, let’s welcome the return of statement accessorizing as well as some valuable key pieces (a necklace, an earring—or even a bangle). We can go for the usual look. When the right question, “Where did you purchase that wonderful outfit?” is asked, the quest to replicate that exact look begins. However, let’s stay trendy and try something new. In this case, use chic pieces of jewellery with this spring’s colour trends. You want a ready selection that works with many patterns. An extra bonus, if you are able to make it to any social event (formal or work), all you need to do is remove the jewellery. Time to get your jewellery on board as the glam train pulls into fashion station. Let the season begin.

MANAGE YOUR EMAILS RIGHT TO MINIMIZE STRESS According to the study carried out by Dr. Richard MacKinnon from the Future Work Centre, the U.K., people who check their emails first thing in the morning are suffering from higher levels of stress and pressure than those who don’t. The results also showed that 62 per cent of the participants have bad habits when it comes to managing their inbox, such as having their emails on all day with notifications coming to their cell phones on a continuous basis.

MENOPAUSAL MIGRAINES Migraines heat up as women approach menopause, says a new study from researchers at the University of Cincinnati (UC), Montefiore Headache Center, Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Vedanta Research. The risk for high frequency headache, or more than 10 days with headache per month, increases by 60 per cent in middle-aged women with migraine during the perimenopause—the transitional period into menopause marked by irregular menstrual cycles—as compared to normally cycling women, according to Vincent Martin, the study's lead author. "Changes in female hormones such as estrogen and progesterone that occur during the perimenopause might trigger increased headaches during this time," says Richard Lipton, MD, director, Montefiore Headache Center and professor and vice chair of neurology, and the Edwin S. Lowe Chair in Neurology, Albert Einstein College of Medicine. About 12 per cent of the U.S. population experiences migraine, with women suffering from them three times more frequently than men.
LOSE WEIGHT WITH DIGITAL SCALES According to research coming from The University of Manchester, the more often you use digital weighing scales, the more weight you can lose. The study, led by Dr. Matthew Sperrin, lecturer in health data science at The University of Manchester's Health eResearch Centre, was delivered in partnership with Withings, a French manufacturer of connected-health technology, who gathered the anonymized data from a random sample of their UK-based Smart Scale customers. The findings, based on data from 975 people gathered over four years, show that the participants who interacted the most with their internet-based scales were the ones who lost the most amount of weight with the equivalent to an extra 1.13 kilograms lost in men and 0.925 kilograms lost in women over twelve months. "In this study, we wanted to know more about the ways that engagement with weighing scales indicates the users’ behaviour, something that is only possible with recent advances in technology,” says Dr. Sperrin. “By working with Withings, we were able to spot a strong correlation between self-weighing and weightloss, particularly that the more a patient weighed themselves, the more weight they were shown to lose.”
CHRONIC FATIGUE SYNDROME: GETTING “YOUNGER” Researchers at the University of Bristol, the U.K., have found that almost two per cent of 16-year-olds have chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) lasting more than six months and nearly three per cent have CFS lasting more than three months. Those with CFS missed, on average, more than half a day of school every week. The research, based on 5,756 participants (children of the 90s), showed that girls were almost twice as likely as boys to have the condition. This is because CFS/ME became more common in girls between 13 and 16 but not in boys. The researchers also found that children from families experiencing greater adversity were more likely to have the condition. The definition of adversity included poor housing, financial difficulties and a lack of practical and/or emotional support for the mother. For more on chronic fatigue syndrome, read the story on page 52.

HOW DO YOU MAKE YOUR TEA? Did you know that tea is the most highly consumed beverage in the world next to water? According to researchers from University of Malaya, there is a way to maximize its potential health benefits, and how it can be done differs across types of tea. The researchers found that in black tea, the most antioxidant activity is reached in a short hot water infusion (steeping). Green tea showed temperature sensitivity, which means that prolonged cold steeping up to two hours yields the most antioxidants.
USE YOUR SMARTPHONE TO BOOST YOUR HEALTH Did you know that prolonged sitting is linked to increased risk of breast, colorectal, ovarian, endometrial and prostate cancers as well as weight gain, higher BMI, and obesity? According to a study, supported by the American Cancer Society, your smartphone can help you stay healthy, sending you prompts to take short walking breaks to reverse negative effects of prolonged sitting. “Overall, simple smartphone prompts appear to be a promising strategy for reducing sedentary behavior and increasing activity, though adequately-powered and well-designed studies will be needed to confirm these preliminary findings,” authors say. VIVA TIP: Just remember that sitting in your office chair uninterruptedly for eight hours is bad for your health, so try setting your phone to send you friendly reminders to move around from time to time.
LEARN FROM YOUR MISTAKES Researchers found that people who feel they can learn from their mistakes have different brain reactions to mistakes than those who think intelligence is fixed. "One big difference between people who think intelligence is malleable and those who think intelligence is fixed is how they respond to mistakes," says Jason S. Moser, of Michigan State University, who worked on the study with Hans S. Schroder, Carrie Heeter, Tim P. Moran, and Yu-Hao Lee. Those who think they can’t get smarter will not take the opportunities to learn from their mistakes. This can cause problems at school, when a student thinks their intelligence is fixed and will not try harder after they fail a test—unlike other students who try to learn from a mistake and figure it out, putting more effort.
EXERCISE YOUNG The human gut has over 100 trillion microorganisms and according to the research, conducted by the University of Colorado Boulder, exercising at a young age can change microbial community in your body and improve health over the long term. “Exercise affects many aspects of health, both metabolic and mental, and people are only now starting to look at the plasticity of these gut microbes,” says Monika Fleshner, the senior author of the new study and a professor in CU-Boulder’s Department of Integrative Physiology (Science Daily). id you know that estrogen, progesterone and testosterone influence your digestive health? In fact, many studies show that during pregnancy, when your hormones are going haywire, the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) are often improved; and sometimes, this fluctuation leads to aggravations in constipation. This hormonal-digestive connection and the fact that men and women produce different hormones (or different amounts of the same hormones) explains why IBS, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and gallstones affect women more often than men and why men are more prone to developing gastric ulcer and gastric cancers. Find out what impact sex hormones have on several gastrointestinal conditions. GASTRIC ULCERS Gastric ulcers are sores, or openings, in the inner lining of the stomach. They typically lead to epigastric pain, nausea, frequent bouts of hunger and possible weight loss. Ulcers are more prevalent in men than women, and, according to an animal study by Machowaska and other researchers, may be aggravated by testosterone. INFLAMMATORY BOWEL DISEASE (IBD) IBD is a chronic inflammatory condition that involves various parts of the gastrointestinal tract and produces symptoms of bloody diarrhea, abdominal pain, reduced appetite and low-grade fever. Ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn’s disease are examples of this condition and are more prevalent in women than men. Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), a precursor to several sex hormones, has been shown to be reduced in patients with IBD. IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME (IBS) Irritable bowel syndrome is defined as a sensory-motor disorder of the digestive tract with symptoms of abdominal pain and alternating bowel habits, ranging from constipation to diarrhea. According to Mulak, IBS is more prevalent in female patients. It’s obvious that sex hormones influence IBS, as the symptoms change throughout the menstrual cycle and respond to oral contraceptive and hormone replacement therapies. Estrogen has an inhibitory effect on colonic contractility, which results in slower transit time while progesterone appears to have
dual function, with high dose reducing motility (the contraction of the muscles that mix and propel contents in the gastrointestinal tract) and low dose administration increasing motility. Fluctuations of progesterone throughout the menstrual cycle could play a role in the alternating constipation and diarrhea symptoms seen with irritable bowel syndrome. While there are several physiological explanations of how the hormones impact IBS, more research needs to be done to determine the exact mechanism of how this happens. In a pilot study by Andus and other researchers, 20 participants with UC and Crohn’s were supplemented with 200 milligrams DHEA once per day for 56 days. Supplementation resulted in clinically significant improvement in both groups with six of seven patients with Crohn’s and six of 13 patients with UC achieving remission and a decrease in blood diarrhea, abdominal pain and liquid stools. GALLBLADDER DISEASE Gallstones, in particular stones predominantly made of cholesterol, occur twice as frequently in women than men and are believed to be promoted by estrogen. Oral contraceptives and conjugated estrogen hormone replacement therapy both result in increased cholesterol gallstone formation. According to Wang, similar impact is demonstrated in men receiving estrogen for prostatic cancer therapy. COLORECTAL CANCER (CRC) Estrogen has been linked to not only reproductive cancers, such as breast and uterine, but also non-reproductive cancers like colorectal cancer. Women’s Health Initiative observation study supports the connection between hormones and CRC. According to Caiazza, it demonstrated a 30 per cent reduction in CRC incidence in post-menopausal women who received hormone replacement therapy (HRT). CLOSING WORDS While more research needs to be done to understand the role that sex hormones play in gastrointestinal health, exploring the connection between sex hormones and your gastrointestinal health may yield additional therapeutic approaches and interventions that you may not have been considered otherwise. H E A LT H FOR TURMERIC RECIPES, TURN TO PAGE 62
UPCOMING INGREDIENTS
TURMERIC BY DR. JOYCE JOHNSON
T
urmeric comes from the root of the Curcuma longa plant and is a culinary spice that spans cultures. It has long been used as a powerful anti-inflammatory ingredient in Indian curries. According to the Journal of the American Chemical Society, turmeric contains a wide range of antioxidant, antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, anticarcinogenic, antimutagenic and anti-inflammatory properties. The use of this spice has been traced back a thousand years in India and China with some sources even suggesting that it was used about ten thousand years ago. Turmeric is an indispensable part of the ancient Ayurvedic practice. The spice has been known to promote the holistic health of the body, which explains its increased use in the Western world. Curcumin—the active ingredient in turmeric—may potentially ward off dementia, aid in relieving arthritis, prevent cancer, reduce diabetes and improve digestion. HEALTH BENEFITS Turmeric has a number of health benefits. Below are some of the most researched conditions that it can be used to treat and/ or prevent. ❯ Alzheimer's disease Researchers believe that turmeric’s antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties may be strong enough to block the formation of beta-amyloid, the substance responsible for the plaques in the brain or breakdown the amyloid plaques in the brain that contribute to Alzheimer’s disease. ❯ Arthritis Turmeric has anti-inflammatory properties. A number of studies examining the benefits of turmeric to people with joint pain or arthritis has been done. One of them found that turmeric extract supplements have the same effect as ibuprofen in patients with knee osteoarthritis. ❯ Cancer Much research exists that cites the benefits of turmeric related to cancer. A 2006-study showed that curcumin inhibited the growth of human colon cancer while a New Jersey study found that it can act as a powerful ingredient in treating and preventing prostate cancer when combined with broccoli and cauliflower.
Some animal studies suggest that curcumin may also reduce the size of the tumour or percentage of animals who developed them. ❯ Diabetes Turmeric can help people with diabetes, regulating their insulin levels, improving glucose control and increasing the effect of medications used to treat the disease. It also helps reduce insulin resistance, which may prevent the onset of Type-2 diabetes. ❯ Digestion Eating raw turmeric can help treat digestive problems. Turmeric stimulates the gallbladder to produce bile, instantly making the digestive system work more efficiently. It is also known to reduce symptoms of bloating and gas. HOW TO USE You can incorporate more turmeric into your diet by taking tablet or capsule supplements or by simply, by adding it to your daily cooking. Whichever way you do it, making turmeric a part of your diet is one of the best choices you can make for your health. VM

HOMEOPATHY & MAINSTREAM HEALTH CARE VIVA SPEAKS TO DR. PETER FISHER, THE PHYSICIAN TO HER MAJESTY QUEEN ELIZABETH II, ABOUT THE APPLICATION AND INTEGRATION OF HOMEOPATHIC MEDICINE INTO MAINSTREAM HEALTH CARE.
BY INNA LEVCHUK
H
omeopathy, widely used in Europe, is becoming more mainstream in North America. Based on the principle of “like cures like,” this system of alternative medicine uses micro-doses of a substance that cause symptoms to stimulate the body’s self-healing response. WHAT IS HOMEOPATHY? According to Dr. Fisher, homeopathy has a wide range of applicability, varying from symptomatic treatment of short-term problems—cold, hay fever, migraines—to, as he puts it, perhaps the most interesting and the most relevant phenomenon in the modern healthcare context—the constitutional treatment of people, not diseases. “Which is of great interest in an era when so many people have multiple or complex illnesses,” continues Dr. Fisher. “From the conventional perspective, they’ve become almost nothing but a bundle of diseases, each to be treated with one, two, three or four drugs. With homeopathy, you can take a completely different perspective and say, ‘This is not a bundle of diseases, this is a person with a specific pattern of suffering.’” THE QUESTION OF INTEGRATION According to Dr. Fisher, homeopathy should be used in an integrative fashion.
VIVA HomeoFeature.indd 42
2016-02-24 2:04 PM
“Nobody has all the answers to the myriad faces of human suffering. The whole point of integration is to combine the best of both worlds,” he says. Dr. Fisher believes conventional medicine has achieved effectiveness in treating multiple conditions—especially with the help of antibiotics that are “wonderful drugs when they are appropriately used.” “The problem is that very often, they are not used properly,” says Dr. Fisher. “Immunization has saved lives of millions and millions of people, mostly children.” He believes that homeopathy must be integrated not only with conventional but also with other forms of natural medicine. “In our hospital, we use a lot of acupuncture for chronic pain,” he says. “It’s a great treatment for chronic back pain.” APPLICATIONS Dr. Fisher emphasizes that homeopathy can’t replace immunization. “The first thing to say is that homeopathy is not anti-immunization, not anti-vaccination. Homeopathy was actually invented the same year as vaccination in 1756. Samuel Hahnemann, the founder of homeopathy, was very strongly in favour of vaccination.” According to Dr. Fisher, while homeopathy can be applied for a number of self-limiting minor complaints, such as coughs, colds and allergies, it can be successfully used as a part of cancer treatment. “We have a cancer centre in our hospital,” says Dr. Fisher. “We don’t claim to cure cancer but we treat the symptoms— the symptoms of the treatment of the cancer, such as chemotherapy, or the radio therapy. Fantastically, we get very positive feedback.” USE IN CHILDREN According to Dr. Fisher, homeopathic medicines are a very popular choice for children for a variety of common conditions, such as teething and colic. Coughs, colds and sore throats are often treated with antibiotics, which, Dr. Fisher says, often leads to recurrent infections. “There is sufficient evidence that it is a slippery slope: the more antibiotics you get, the more likely you are to get another infection.” According to Dr. Fisher, treating children with homeopathic medicine can reduce the use of antibiotics in them, providing adequate results and also improving their parents’ quality of life.
CHALLENGES According to Dr. Fisher, in around 1890, a quarter of all U.S. physicians were homeopaths. This number dropped drastically through the 20th century and homeopathy was close to disappearing around the 1970s. Dr. Fisher says although interest in homeopathy has been steadily growing these days, there are a number of challenges facing the industry. One of them is a large international sceptical movement that has a negative impact on the public perception of homeopathic medicines. According to Dr. Fisher, unfortunately, there is an informational gap when it comes to homeopathic medicine. “You will find websites that say, ‘Don’t immunize your kids, go against autism’—that’s very damaging,” he says. Dr. Fisher is confident that the best way to create awareness about homeopathic medicine is through doctors’ cooperation as well as the public involvement. “The public are our best advocates,” notes Dr. Fisher. “I think you need alliances involving the public, involving the industry, involving the practitioners to bring high-quality, balanced, sensible and relevant information.” INTEGRATION According to Dr. Fisher, integrating homeopathic medicine into mainstream health care systems will reduce the economic burden that many countries are facing today. The cost around conventional medicine is associated not only with the cost of medical substances but also with the cost of work and time necessary to produce the medication, plus, in many cases, it adds up to treating its adverse effects, says Dr. Fisher, also noting that homeopathic medicines are generally cheap and are very safe with no evidence of serious side effects. “I emphasize that I am not knocking the conventional medicine, it has achieved miraculous things,” reiterates Dr. Fisher. “A huge number of diseases vanished but unfortunately, it doesn’t mean the end of human suffering. The benefits are that homeopathy can treat the symptoms that are difficult to treat otherwise and most importantly, it can reduce the burden of the vastly used drugs that are being prescribed.” VM
It’s recommended to see both your homeopathic and your family doctor and let them work together to ensure the best outcome. Also, always be open about the medications you are taking to minimize the risk of drug interactions.

THINK YOURSELF THIN HOW TO LOVE THE WOMAN IN THE MIRROR BY NATHALIE PLAMONDON-THOMAS
E
xercise to some women is difficult and eating healthy is an even bigger challenge. Furthermore, some women believe that, despite immeasurable motivation, lost weight will return—with interest. If you find yourself on a constant diet, wondering what is wrong with you, finding clothes that fit, or avoid the reflection in the mirror like the plague, don’t worry, you’re not alone. SOCIETY VS. SELF-IMAGE Our society has been a major contributor on how we perceive ourselves. We seek to conform to a media-driven ideal of beauty. The fact is weight standards presented in the media are completely unattainable for most women. The unrealistic body shapes displayed are more likely well below what is considered a healthy body weight. These cyber-beauties make it difficult for women to achieve any level of contentment with their physical
appearance. According to Brown University, studies show that 74.4 per cent of normal-weight women and 46 per cent of men think about their weight or appearance “all the time” or “frequently.” Body image seems to be a widespread preoccupation. Remember that your self-worth comes from inside. It isn't connected to the fact that there is an evident gap between your body and the ones seen in the media. Change your mindset and use the information presented in order to make yourself feel great and empowered. Aim for your own realistic healthy version of yourself. Your own best is plenty enough to make you feel great. SELF-FULFILLING PROPHECY Negative limiting beliefs about ourselves rule our behaviours. Though food and exercise are both important in your weight loss journey, changing your eating and exercising habits at the

behaviour level won’t be enough. You have to change your values and beliefs, not just your behaviours. You know healthy recipes and you know how to exercise. Yet, knowledge is useless without practice. If you don’t actually eat healthy food and avoid exercise, then all the recipes and workout routines will be useless. The problem needs to be addressed at the source, at the belief level. Weight loss begins in the mind, with what you are programmed to love or hate. If you believe that you’re fat, your mind will hear a variety of negative messages constantly. “I have a big gut,” “I am fat,” or “I have big thighs”. These constant reminders become false truths, thus when alternate, more positive messages fuelling change are heard, they are quickly disregarded. How can change begin when the mind is constantly weighed down with such negativity? It is a self-fulfilling prophecy. The brain is at the base of your actions as the mind and body are connected. You get whatever you focus on. Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) demonstrates how your self-talk programs your brain. NLP is an approach to communication, personal development and psychotherapy created by Richard Bandler and John Grinder in California, U.S., in the 1970s. With a mindset of being overweight, your brain won’t ask you to workout or eat healthy food; it will keep you overweight, because that is what you are conditioning yourself to be. REPROGRAM YOUR MIND Reprogramming your mind is similar to renovating your kitchen. There are a few steps to follow. STEP ONE: DESIRE For a renovation, you would need to assess what you want and decide on your budget. What room will make the most impact and will give you the most satisfaction? Decide on what you want to work on first and determine your vision of the new room. Likewise, the first step to a well-programmed mind is to know what you want. ❯ Decide what you want to work on. What is important to you? ❯ Dedicate your efforts to one goal at a time. ❯ Dare. Elicit exactly what you want and write it down in a detailed way, aim to have lots of choices and opportunities. Form a clear outcome. ❯ Avoid what you don’t want and focus on what you desire. STEP TWO: CHANGE Let’s say, you have decided to make changes to your kitchen. Before installing new cupboards, the first step is to dispose of the existing ones. There is a demolition phase before new cupboards are installed. The second step in brain reprogramming is to clean up and dispose of unwanted emotions, behaviours and beliefs in order to make room for what you want to implement in your life.
/
H E A LT H
Turn negative into positive. Determine what beliefs need to change. Take a moment to rephrase your limiting beliefs about weight loss and watch yourself transform. For example, “‘I can’t lose weight’—says who?” Commit to losing weight and accept any challenges or difficulties that may come to pass during your journey. Neutralize the past. Take a moment to acknowledge everything you have learned so far. All the negative experiences around your weight resulted in positive learning lessons. Once you have accepted the learning, you can let go of the negative emotions and move on to a much brighter future. STEP THREE: ACHIEVE Now, with a clear and empty room, all you need to do is fill up your kitchen with new floors, brand new cupboards and paint your walls in fresh colours. Once clean of negativity, the third step in mind reprogramming is to achieve your goals by installing your new desires and programming your new attitude. Identify the trigger for past-unwanted behaviours. Visualize yourself at the trigger moment and white out the usual response. Replace it with a new behaviour. For example, imagine you are sitting in the living room and get hungry. First, you eat a small snack and get a temptation to grab another one. The old behaviour would be to satisfy your cravings with another snack. Being mindful of what you eat— without condemnation—is a very useful tool in losing weight. Re-think your old behaviours into new, more serving habits. BODY DYSMORPHIC DISORDER Sometimes poor body image can lead to a serious medical concern. The constant worry, or obsession, that something is wrong with the way we look is called body dysmorphic disorder (BDD). According to Rhode Island Hospital, BDD is a common, under-recognized and often severe, psychological disorder. BDD interferes with people’s daily life, creating low self-esteem and anxiety. If you think that you suffer from BDD, consult your doctor for an accurate diagnosis as well as treatment options. ASK FOR HELP To some extent, society does affect our self-image and distorts our self-worth. Being aware of this fact and identifying the limiting beliefs that were created as a result of our exposure to such an unrealistic ideal is the first step towards our longterm change. Instead of focusing on behaviours, start working from the inside. Remember that your brain will execute your thoughts. Also, remember that you are not alone. Seek the help from a trained councillor or doctor who can help you achieve a healthy body image. VM SPRING 2016 / VIVAMAGONLINE.COM 47

MUSIC
THERAPY FOR EPILEPSY HOW LISTENING TO TUNES CAN HELP PREVENT SEIZURES BY PHILL FELTHAM
W
here would the world be without music? Ed Sheeran can set the mood for a romantic evening while David Guetta sets the beat for an intense workout, but did you know that listening to music can actually be beneficial for your heath? Studies have already proven that listening to music has many health benefits. For instance, it can improve communication skills and reduce sensations of pain (as long as the music you are listening to isn’t painful). Music can also take a bite of depression, can encourage you to exercise, as well as can help you to relax and sleep. Moreover, recent research has discovered that music can help prevent seizures as well.

GOOD FOR SEIZURES Researchers from Ohio State University's Wexner Medical Center recently discovered that people with epilepsy appear to react differently to music than those who do not have the disorder. This finding could possibly lead to new therapies that can help to prevent seizures. Christine Charyton, PhD, adjunct assistant professor and visiting assistant professor of neurology at the medical center says that music may be used as an intervention to help prevent seizures. Most people with epilepsy (80 per cent) have temporal lobe epilepsy, where partial seizures occur in the temporal lobe of the brain. Music is processed in this same brain region—the temporal lobe. Partial seizures can be observed as a warning or a sense of awareness (aura) that a full seizure or some other event might occur, loss of awareness without consciousness (staring out into space), or where the person is doing repetitive acts without cause (for example, distorted speech or aimless walking). “We compared music and the brain to people with and without epilepsy,” says Charyton. “We collected data from patients over a two-year period using specific jazz or classical music both preceded and followed by silence.” Patients listened to 10 minutes of silence, followed by 10 minutes of music, followed by 10 minutes of music, followed by 10 minutes of silence. Researchers recorded the patients’ brainwave patterns during this process with electroencephalogram. Classical composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and jazz musician John Coltrane were the artists of choice. “We didn’t focus on other genres of music since we based our study on previous research,” says Charyton. “But, we did find that patients responded positively when listening to both pieces of music.” Researchers randomized the music where some patients listened to Coltrane first while others listened to Mozart first. Consequently, researchers discovered levels of brain activity were significantly higher in patients listening to music. “We were surprised by the findings,” says Charyton. “We hypothesized that music may be processed in the brain differently. However, we did not know if this would be the same or different for people with epilepsy.”
lic awareness and education for epilepsy in the province, provides information that there are very rare cases, but they do exist, that music can cause seizures. This form of reflexive epilepsy, known as musicogenic seizures, is triggered by music or loud sounds. Furthermore, people with a low threshold of tolerance to specific frequencies of pitch can be prone to this type of seizures. “If you are sensitive to noise and music, consult your neurologist before listening to music,” recommends Charyton. “In our research study, no one had a seizure from the music we selected. Musicogenic seizures are rare.”

MUSIC THERAPY IN ACTION Music therapy won’t replace traditional treatment, but can be used as one complementary intervention technique that can help prevent seizures in people with epilepsy. Charyton provides a few suggestions on how to put music therapy into action. 1 | WATCH FOR SYMPTOMS “If you are aware that you are having symptoms, consult a neurologist for an evaluation. If you know you have epilepsy, such as repeated auras or blank spells, try to relax and listen to music regularly to prevent a seizure in addition to seeing your neurologist,” says Charyton. “The brain synchronizes with the music instead of itself, to prevent a seizure from occurring. If the brain synchronizes with itself, a seizure may be likely to occur. The music can act as a stimulus to change this undesirable synchronization and instead synchronize with the music, thus preventing a seizure from occurring.” 2 | MANAGE STRESS “Research shows that stress is a major cause of seizures,” says Charyton. “Our research shows that music changes the synchronization pattern, thus decreasing the likelihood of a seizure. If you find yourself in experiencing stress, you may want to consider consulting a psychologist and listening to music.” 3 | GET SLEEP “Sleep is beneficial to reduce the risk of seizures,” says Charyton. “Music can help you relax. Reducing stress can help you sleep. Listening to music can affect brainwave patterns that will synchronize with the music, which can also help reduce risk of seizures.” VM SPRING 2016 / VIVAMAGONLINE.COM 49

BY DR. LOUISE MCCRINDLE, ND
here is a line when “feeling tired” becomes more than simple fatigue. It is estimated that about 400,000 Canadians, or about three per cent of the population, suffer from chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) or by its medical name, myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME). The disease strikes more women than men and tends to manifest itself during people’s prime working years (40s and 50s). Many patients with ME/CFS struggle to get a proper diagnosis and according to Canada’s Canadian Community Health Survey, 29 per cent of patients with a CFS diagnosis have healthcare needs that are not being met. Quite simply, ME/CFS can devastate lives and have a profound impact on both the patient and their loved ones. There is currently no test that diagnoses CFS. Patients who suffer from the disease report a number of symptoms including pain, reduced stress tolerance, as well as digestive and urinary problems.

CAUSE While we do not know the specific cause of ME/CFS, medical professionals have come up with a number of hypotheses. The condition can be triggered by an infection (viral, parasitic or bacterial). In addition, it is associated with abnormalities in the immune system. A genetic predisposition might exist. Furthermore, there is evidence of energy production abnormalities in the mitochondria (where cells make energy). A 2014 study has linked ME/CFS to inflammation of the nerve cells of the brain. NATUROPATHIC CARE/TREATMENT Due to the complexities associated with a multi-system chronic illness such as ME/CFS, it is important to take an individualized approach to treatment and care. Many patients are tired of experimenting with costly products and treatments that haven’t shown many benefits. A proper assessment can help guide treatment more specifically and reduce frustration. That being said, patients should follow some general treatment guidelines and foundational concepts, which are an essential starting point in improving quality of life and reducing symptoms. Diet Eating a clean diet, eliminating sugar and refined/processed foods is an important first step. Ensure your diet is full of colourful vegetables and healthy fats, which provide important phytochemicals, reduce inflammation and improve brain function. It is also important to not skip meals and ensure you have protein with every meal. Your body requires healthy building blocks to produce energy. The key is to make change manageable. Take healthy short cuts in terms of food preparation where possible. For example, you can get pre-cut frozen vegetables to minimize energy expenditure and reduce grocery-shopping excursions. Ask for help from your family, friends, and coworkers. The other important component of your diet is ensuring you are adequately digesting and absorbing consumed foods. Working with a naturopathic doctor to ensure your digestion is working optimally is also an important component of treatment. Sleep There are a variety of herbs and nutraceuticals that can help improve sleep quality and quantity, but before exploring these options, it is essential to ensure the proper foundations of good sleep hygiene are in place. Stress Management The stress of dealing with a chronic illness can be extremely high

and pose an obstacle to healing. Ensure you have a good support network in place. Look into the support groups in your area to connect with others who get it. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) can provide some useful tools to better cope with stress. Adult colouring books are a big trend right now and can be a great way to calm the mind. The Environment Take an environmental health inventory and ensure you are minimizing current exposures and addressing past ones. You may want to look at investing in a good quality air purifier. NATURAL TREATMENTS Once foundations are in place, there are numerous nutraceuticals and botanicals that can help address unmet nutritional demands, mitochondrial requirements, immune dysfunction and other core components seen in ME/CFS. It is important to explore the aforementioned options with a qualified healthcare provider as your list of what to take can grow exponentially and be ineffective if not done properly. Your healthcare provider can also give you information on numerous drug supplement interactions that might cause further health complications. SLOW AND STEADY Slow and steady wins this race. Rest—especially as you start to improve. Manage your to dos at a pace, and listen to your body when it wants rest. Allow yourself to bank some of your energy instead of using it all up and going into an energy deficit. Ideally, you want to sandwich all activity with rest. There is hope, and many options to explore. It is important to be systematic and respectful of your body. The more we learn, the more this field grows. VM
TIPS FOR PROPER SLEEP HYGIENE ✔ Ensure you go to bed at the same time every day ✔ Only use your bed for sleeping ✔ Stay away from caffeine, alcohol, nicotine and/or any other stimulants at least five hours before bed ✔ Expose yourself to sunlight/full-spectrum light during the day ✔ Ensure your bed and pillow are comfortable and that your room is dark ✔ Have a nutritious snack before bed (but do not eat a large meal close to bedtime) ✔ Stay away from computers, iPhones, iPads and other devices before bed

SARCOPENIA: HOW YOU CAN PREVENT AGE-RELATED MUSCLE LOSS
BY JACKIE MCKENZIE, M.SC, RD REGISTERED DIETITIAN
C
urrent estimates suggest approximately 200 million people worldwide will experience sarcopenia to a degree that could affect their health over the next four decades. Sarcopenia is a slow process characterized by a loss of muscle mass, strength and function related to aging. Subtle at first, sarcopenia can begin in your 40s with about 1% muscle loss per year and becomes more consequential as you age, impacting your daily physical function and independence. Mobility, falls, osteoporosis, fractures as well as diseases such as type 2 diabetes, cancer and metabolic syndrome can all be associated with sarcopenia. However, Scientists are discovering ways to preserve your muscles and reduce this age-related loss. HIGH-QUALITY PROTEIN As you age, your ability to stimulate muscle building is diminished and your body requires more high-quality proteins to meet your needs. Protein from animal sources such as meat, fish, poultry, dairy, eggs and isolated soy protein contain all of the essential amino acids for muscle protein synthesis and should be enjoyed daily. As you increase your intake of these high-quality proteins pay special attention to milk proteins. Rich in casein and whey protein as well as the muscle building amino acid leucine, researchers have found it to be very beneficial in preventing muscle loss as well as building muscle in older adults. Diet Hint: ❯ Greek yogurt with morning granola-fruit mix. ❯ Add a scoop of Boomer Nutrition Protein Powder with whey and micellar casein to daily smoothie. TIMING IS EVERYTHING To build and maintain lean muscle mass, spacing your protein intake throughout the day is essential. Contrary to the typical
North American diet of a tiny amount of protein rich foods at breakfast and a protein frenzy at dinner, you should include 25 to 30 grams of high-quality protein at each meal to stop age-related muscle loss. Diet Hint: Breakfast and lunch is a struggle for many, consider: ❯ ¾ cup cottage cheese with fruit, 1 slice whole grain toast with 2tbsp nut butter. ❯ Steel cut or rolled oats with 1 scoop of Boomer Nutrition Protein Powder and berries ❯ 2 hard-boiled eggs, ¾ cup greek yogurt with fruit and 1tbsp flax or chia seeds. USE THOSE MUSCLES “Use it, or lose it.” This saying has never been truer than when it comes to your muscles. Resistance exercise and strength training is important to increase muscle mass, strength and functional performance in older adults. Activity Hint: You don’t need a gym to push those muscles, resistance training can happen at home, work or your local park. Strive for 3 times a week. ❯ Arm raises, lunges, squats, plank and push ups work your core, upper and lower body ❯ Add walking, swimming, biking or yoga to complement your resistance routine. Staying active with daily exercise and adding resistance training combined with good dietary habits will keep you healthy for decades to come. Look for high-protein foods and consider adding Boomer Nutrition Protein Powders to meet your dietary needs and prevent age-related muscle loss. Live Your Life and age well.

ll eyes are on Oscar-nominated actress Brie Larson for her performance in the Academy Award-nominated film, Room, an intense drama that tells the story of Joy “Ma” Newsome and her son Jack who, after years of living in a garden shed, escape to explore the outside world. Larson’s performance in Room has already given the actress a list of accolades that include Best Actress wins at the Critics Choice Awards as well as the Golden Globes. The actress was the talk of the town during last year’s Toronto International Film Festival where Room won the Audience Award. One of Hollywood’s fastest rising stars admits she’s totally out of her comfort zone, but relishes the zone after a 20-year climb to stardom. RISE TO FAME At age six, Larson became the youngest person to ever attend San Francisco’s American Conservatory Theater’s training program. One year later, Larson was cast in her first TV role on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, enabling her to receive the coveted Screen Actors Guild card. Larson moved from Sacramento, California, to Los Angeles with her mother and sister after her parents divorced. The shy youngster was often cast in TV shows until she got her big break playing the defiant daughter on Showtime’s The United State of Tara. Feature films quickly followed—21 Jump Street, Trainwreck, and then along came her challenging role as a young kidnapping victim in Room. ROLE PREPARATION In person, Larson gives off a quality of maturity and knowledge far beyond her 26 years. She is slightly heavier than the person she portrays in Room, having lost 15 pounds to give herself a more lean and sunken look of a longtime hostage. “I talked to doctors about the depletion of sunlight, what that would do, not getting enough Vitamin D, and not getting the right nutrition,” explains Larson on her preparation for the role. “I followed a very specific diet. I stayed at home for a month. Whatever I did, nothing could compare to the real life stories I read.” In Room, Ma was alone for two years before giving birth to her son, Jack. Larson secluded herself from society to gain a small understanding of how Ma must have felt living in a garden shed.
At the beginning, Larson thought she could disguise the month-long preparation as a vacation. However, the seclusion soon started to bother the talented actress. “I hit this point where I felt so depressed that I cried a lot,” admits Larson. “It didn’t help that I was on this incredibly restrictive diet to get me into character.” Larson coped with the still and quiet by becoming a voracious reader—despite having no phone or Internet access. Larson has shied away from speaking to any victims of abduction. “I’m a very private person and there was no way I was ever going to invade someone’s privacy like that.” In fact, Larson prefers not to discuss much about her private life and remains tight-lipped when it comes to Alex Greenwald, her actor boyfriend who accompanied her to the Golden Globes.
NEXT BIG ROLES Room is now in Larson’s rearview and she is currently focused on her next major role in the new big budget film Kong: Skull Island, which is presently shooting in Australia. “It’s nice that I don’t have to concern myself with a deep, affecting storyline,” says Larson. “In Kong, I’m climbing mountains and hacking through forests and getting attacked by insects.” Besides Kong, also in the pipeline is Free Fire, alongside Armie Hammer and Basmati Blues, a musical shot in India. ROOM FOR REFLECTION Larson admits she’s not sure that all this attention, fame and stardom is her ultimate goal. However, the actress doesn’t want to turn away from becoming an A-lister either. “One thing I remember vividly from my childhood was me, my mom and little sister living in a studio apartment not much bigger than the garden shed in Room,” says Larson. “I had very little in the way of possessions—two pairs of jeans, two pairs of shoes, a headband and a couple of shirts.” The actress continues, “Instant noodles was every meal—we had nothing, we lived on nothing but it was the happiest time of my life. My mom had this wonderful imagination, which made the apartment seem magical. She went with me on all my auditions because I wanted to be an actor. So hopefully, I can do this for as long as I can.” VM

BUTTERNUT SQUASH, SWEET POTATO, CARROT & TURMERIC SOUP with Green Apple Cream SERVES: 6
INGREDIENTS: • 1 large butternut squash, halved lengthwise/pitted • 2 medium sweet potatoes, halved • 1 large carrot, peeled and diced • 1 green apple • 1⁄2 yellow onion • 1 tbsp. ground turmeric • 1 tsp. cinnamon • 1L low sodium vegetable broth, or water • 1 ½ tsp. sea salt • 1 tsp. white pepper • 2 tbsp. unsalted butter, melted GREEN APPLE CREAM: • 1⁄2 green apple, peeled and cored • 1⁄2 cup heavy cream DIRECTIONS: 1. Pre-heat oven to 425F. Line a rimmed baking tray with parchment paper. Lay squash and sweet potatoes cut side up and brush with one tablespoon of melted butter, season with salt and pepper. Roast until fork tender, 35 to 45 minutes. 2. Pre-heat a medium pot or dutch oven on low-medium, add remaining butter. Dice apple and onion and add to pot with cinnamon, turmeric and sauté. When squash and sweet potato are ready and cooled, scoop out flesh with a large spoon and add to pot with carrot. Add stock or water and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to a low-medium setting and simmer for 15 to 20 minutes. 3. Use an immersion blender or blender to blend soup (if using a blender allow steam to escape through the lid while blending). For an additionally silky texture, pass the soup through a fine strainer. 4. Add green apple to a blender with cream and blend until smooth, drizzle on top of soup and garnish with sliced green apple.
CHICKEN TIKKA MASALA SERVES: 4
INGREDIENTS: • 2 pounds chicken breast, butterflied cut into chunks • 1 onion, fine brunoise • 5 garlic cloves, finely grated • 1 tbsp. ginger, finely grated • 1 tbsp. ground turmeric • 2 tsp. ground cumin • 2 tsp. garam masala • 2 tsp. ground coriander • 4 cardamom pods, crushed • 1 1⁄2 cup yogurt • 1⁄4 cup tomato paste • 1 28-ounce can whole peeled tomatoes • 1 1⁄2 cups heavy cream • 1 tbsp. salt • 1 tsp. fresh cracked black pepper • 2 tbsp. vegetable oil • cilantro DIRECTIONS: 1. Combine garlic, ginger and all spices in a bowl. Take half of this mixture and add to another bowl with yogurt, salt and chicken, mix well and marinate for at least four hours up to overnight. Reserve remaining spice mixture in fridge. 2. Remove chicken from fridge and set aside. Heat vegetable oil in a large heavy bottom pot over medium heat and add onion. Sauté until translucent, then add tomato paste and cook for four to five minutes before adding reserved spice mixture. It is important not to let any of this mixture burn. Once it browns well, the mixture is very fragrant and begins to stick to the bottom of the pan. Add tomatoes and scrape the bottom of the pot while crushing the tomatoes. Cook for approximately seven to 10 minutes and then blend this mixture in a blender until smooth. If it is too thick to blend, add just enough water to get it going. Return mixture to a clean pot and bring to a simmer, add cream and cook for 30 minutes. 3. Pre-heat broiler on low. Line a rimmed baking tray with parchment paper and lay down chicken. Broil under chicken begins to char but does not burn. The aim is to achieve colour and the chicken will finish cooking through in the sauce. Once charred, add chicken to sauce and cook for another 10 minutes. Finish with cilantro and serve with your choice of naan, roti or rice. SPRING 2016 / VIVAMAGONLINE.COM 69

CREATING YOUR PERFECT KITCHEN 2016 TRENDS TO A BETTER EATING SPACE BY MELISSA DAVIS
s we saw all the 2016 trends roll out the past few months, so too did the baffling process of decoding what and how you should integrate into your upcoming renovation. Kitchens are still top on the list for best investment areas in your home this year and I’ve put together a list of the most popular kitchen design styles that my clients request, along with how to pull together all the cabinets, materials and fixtures to keep your renovation on point. Don’t forget, you want to be trendy enough to be current, but classic enough to love it for years to come. The three styles this year that most of us gravitate to are Urban Organic; the old favourite, Classic Contemporary; and back
with a more eclectic reinvention, Modern Industrial. Here are the three styles and what goes into creating the perfect kitchen in each. 1. THE URBAN ORGANIC KITCHEN A more livable approach to contemporary design The Urban Organic style offers clean orderly spaces with the visual simplicity of modern design, layered with more natural materials and textures. Working within the same muted colour palette, softly worn, authentic and rustic is all layered together, offering far more warmth and approachability than previous incarnations of contemporary design.

YOUR KITCHEN REMODEL PLANNING GUIDE ❯ 3 TO 6 MONTHS BEFORE
❯ 3 TO 6 WEEKS BEFORE
1 | Find Inspiration Pull images of your dream kitchen and create a binder or boards on Pinterest or Houzz.
1 | Make decisions Select the style, palette, appliances and fixtures in advance to leave time for substitutions if required. Budget and availability often mean changes are necessary.
2 | Take stock What do you love or hate about your kitchen now?
❯ WHAT’S IN IT HARDWARE: Brushed stainless, natural woods in simple styles PLUMBING FIXTURES: Clean profiles, square deep single bowl— stainless, matched white or neutral, matched faucet in clean masculine lines APPLIANCES: European lines—small efficient and understated CABINETS: Flat panel profile in natural woods, and soft grey and white washed woods COUNTERS: Pale concrete tones, crisp white quartz composites FLOORS: Four to eight inches in width, lighter-tone wood and engineered, white oak, walnut with natural oil finish in matte sheen
2. THE MODERN INDUSTRIAL KITCHEN The reincarnation of our love affair with industrial chic— with a distinctly reclaimed or handmade spin This style offers a mix of open casual storage and found furniture doubling as cabinetry, featuring high contrast use of dark metals with clean neutral palette.
❯ WHAT’S IN IT HARDWARE: Stainless steel, black iron with a vintage of reclaimed look PLUMBING FIXTURES: Contrasting or industrial stainless or dark grey sink, professional style faucet APPLIANCES: Stainless steel, black stainless, exposed hood, vintage styles CABINETS: mixed styles and materials, metals and open or exposed casual storage options COUNTERS: Stainless, butcher block and natural stones, mixed in one space FLOORS: Five to 10 inches in width, natural hand-scraped, wirebrushed and reclaimed styles of wood and engineered oaks, hickory, pine and walnut in a matte sheen
3 | Make a budget Kitchen renovations can be as simple as a facelift, but even just changing appliances requires an electrician and plumber. Plan every foreseeable cost in advance to avoid overspending mid-renovation. 4 | Hire the team Select a designer, cabinet company and contractor that will work together as a cohesive team and understand your style and budget limitations.
2 | Call it done Settle on a layout, down to the smallest details, such as drawer inserts and lighting. ❯ DAYS BEFORE
1 | Pack it up Pack up your existing kitchen items and store them. Don’t leave anything behind that might slow down the crew. 2 | Stick to the plan There will be a lot of questions. No matter how much preplanning was done, things come up. If you’ve properly planned in advance, feel confident in the choices and stick to the original plan. Changes part way through cost time and money.
3. THE CLASSIC CONTEMPORARY KITCHEN Understated elegance with touches of luxury This style offers traditional elements presented in a more tailored style that boasts soft shades blend from walls to cabinets with rich features in natural cherry and walnut.
❯ WHAT’S IN IT HARDWARE: Polished nickel, polished chrome and oil-rubbed
bronze PLUMBING FIXTURES: Large double bowl under-mount sink, or Blanco Silgranit apron-front sink, elegant faucet APPLIANCES: Panel-front integrated and professional series CABINETS: Traditional shaker profile in warm whites, greys and mid-tone woods COUNTERS: A mix of marble feature areas and light to medium Caesar stone task areas FLOORS: 3 ¼ to 4 ¼ width, mid-tone wood and engineered, oaks and walnuts with medium sheen VM SPRING 2016 / VIVAMAGONLINE.COM 75

FIGHTING CANINE CANCER YOU TAKE THE POSSIBILITY OF DEVELOPING CANCER VERY SERIOUSLY—WHY WOULDN’T YOU OFFER THE SAME TO YOUR BELOVED FURRY FRIENDS?
BY CORRINA MOSCA
W
e know what a cancer diagnosis can mean for both our families and ourselves. However, what does it entail for our beloved pets? Just like us, Fluffy and Fido can potentially suffer from cancer. And, with this aggressive illness accounting for nearly 50 per cent of all disease-related pet deaths each year, it’s certainly not to be taken lightly. ROOT CAUSES According to Dr. Clayton Greenway, DVM, B.Sc, lead veterinarian at Scarborough’s West Hill Animal Clinic, genetics is most typically at the root of cancer development in animals. “There are certain breeds that are more prone to certain cancers,” he says. “Because our pets aren’t usually exposed to the same level of carcinogens as us, it’s largely a genetic disease.” LET’S GET PHYSICAL The best way to determine whether your pet may have cancer is to perform an at-home physical exam, searching carefully for any strange growths or abnormalities. “Run your hands all over your pet, keeping in mind that lumps and masses are very difficult to see because of fur,” notes Dr. Greenway, who also hosts Animal House on Newstalk 1010 radio. “Feel and look everywhere—down their limbs, on their bodies, in their mouths—for any types of growths, lumps or bumps.” Additionally, more internal cancers—such as lymphoma—can present themselves in other ways. Watch your pet closely for other strange behaviours and traits, including abnormal bleeding or discharge, enlarged lymph nodes, anorexia, weight loss, vomiting, diarrhea and/or lethargy. CANINE CURE-ALL? If your pet exhibits any of these symptoms and is diagnosed with
cancer, understand that there are treatment options available to you. Most commonly, these modalities include chemotherapy, surgery and radiation. “I always find that the discussion of cancer treatment is very discouraging to clients,” says Dr. Greenway. “When you say the word ‘chemotherapy,’ they tend to tune out—there are very negative connotations associated with the word for people.” However, he says, animals handle chemotherapy very differently from humans. For pets, smaller doses are used to control the cancer, as larger doses—comparable to the ones used on human patients—can cause extremely debilitating side effects. “The goal is always to eliminate the cancer or put it into complete remission, but if you can control it for a portion of the animal’s life, that is very significant,” he adds. AN OUNCE OF PREVENTION As in humans, the best method of cancer prevention for pets is early diagnosis. Because of this, it is imperative that any abnormalities found within your furry friends are quickly examined and evaluated by a veterinarian. While your pet might not seem to mind any small lumps you find, it is best to seek help before it becomes too late. “The worst sentence that I hear both veterinarians and clients say is, ‘Let’s just watch it,’” says Dr. Greenway. “Those are like curse words to me.” Just like visiting your general practitioner for a physical, he concludes, it is important to perform regular physical examinations on your pet and have their blood work done. “Out of fear or plain old procrastination, a lot of people just don’t deal with it, though something very sinister can be advancing all the while.” So, look out for your pets as you would yourself—ensure that they are getting the proper medical attention they need, and they will keep you and your family company for years to come. LORI KACZMARCZYK AGE: 50 OCCUPATION: Management consultant HEALTH ISSUE: Stress SYMPTOMS: General feelings of anxiety, wish to increase athleticism HEALTH RECOMMENDATIONS: Practice yoga THE RESULTS: Through yoga, I have been able to improve my overall quality of life. Since I began practicing, not only have my levels of strength and flexibility been enriched, I have been able to better achieve the healthy, balanced lifestyle that I so desire. Yoga has enabled me to better manage my stress levels through both the act of meditation and controlled breathing exercises. If you’re looking for a great way to manage anxiety, I highly recommend taking it to the mat.
SHELBY STOVER AGE: 28 OCCUPATION: Strength coach HEALTH ISSUE: Poor digestion SYMPTOMS: Bloating HEALTH RECOMMENDATIONS: A glass of water with one to two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar first thing in the morning and before big meals. THE RESULTS: Awesome. Apple cider vinegar helps alleviate my tummy troubles when I have them. I keep in mind that it is important to eliminate any foods causing chronic bloating; however, for the odd times I experience bloating, apple cider vinegar helps reduce it. Taking a few tablespoons of apple cider vinegar in water throughout the day helps give my system a boost and eliminate bloating. 78 VIVAMAGONLINE.COM / SPRING 2016

PHILL FELTHAM AGE: 39 OCCUPATION: Senior Managing Editor for the RGM Group HEALTH ISSUE: Weight gain SYMPTOMS: In high school, I gained weight by eating unhealthy foods and living a sedentary lifestyle. Often, I stayed up late watching movies and slept until lunchtime. HEALTH RECOMMENDATIONS: When I made the decision to lose weight in 1998, I embraced fitness with arms wide open. I ate more healthy foods and worked out five days a week. Circumstances have changed over the years. Now, I work out three times a week due to a hectic schedule. Moreover, my eating habits have hit peaks and valleys where I was, at times, the poster boy for healthy eating and, at other times, the guy who ate too much unhealthy food. Now, I try to maintain a balanced lifestyle where I give myself permission to eat what I want—within reason. For me, the secret to keeping the weight off is exercising your body regularly and portioning every piece of food that enters your mouth. THE RESULTS: I lost almost 100 pounds and have kept it off for the past 18 years. My wife calls me an “anomaly” because many people gain their weight back. I am firm believer that if people lose weight, they can definitely keep it off with faith and effort.
DEAN MOSCA AGE: 51 OCCUPATION: Entrepreneur HEALTH ISSUE: Poor sleep quality SYMPTOMS: Tossing and turning during sleep, waking up very frequently, fatigue during the day HEALTH RECOMMENDATIONS: Taking a combination of melatonin, 5htp and I-tryptophan before bed THE RESULTS: My sleep quality has improved immensely. Consuming these supplements has helped me to fall asleep faster and more comfortably—and, to top it all off, it also has many anti-cancer benefits. I also recommend avoiding watching television, checking emails and surfing the web an hour before bed to help increase the body’s natural melatonin production.

DESTINATION KOHLER GOLF, FINE DINING, SPA AND SO MUCH MORE
BY BONNIE SIEGLER

hether you’re looking for a breathtaking natural scene with ice fishing, carriage rides or ice bowling or maybe, your own natural summer playground of golf or tennis, or maybe, you opt for fishing or horseback riding, then Destination Kohler could be just what you’re looking for. Nestled amongst trees, water and untouched wilderness in Kohler, Wisconsin, just a 90-minute drive from Milwaukee airport, the rustic—yet luxurious—resort and spa is more than a hotel with activities. It is a spirit that will long stay with you after your visit. LODGING The American Club The American Club is operated and owned by Kohler. The Five Star and only AAA-5-Diamond resort in the entire Midwest was once a dormitory for immigrant employees, later complete then with a pub, bowling alley and barbershop. Currently, the Tudor style redbrick building has earned accolades for its gracious hospitality and beautiful surroundings. Kohler Waters Spa Adjacent to The American Club, it offers a variety of therapeutic water treatments.

the first 10 minutes, walking away with a souvenir—a blackand-blue shoulder and a big smile. My husband took in the full hour. Activities at Destination Kohler are as varied as nature— everything from winter snowshoeing and ice fishing to summer garden tours and hiking.
GOLF The resort includes four award-winning Championship golf courses at Whistling Straights and Blackwolf Run. Since 2004, they have hosted three PGA Championships, the 2007 U.S. Senior Open and many other championships, plus will host the 2020 Ryder Cup Matches. The courses have challenged the pros while providing the amateur golfer a fair and unforgettable test. All four courses between the two venues were chosen for 2013 to 2014 America’s 100 Greatest Golf Courses by Golf Digest.
GET YOUR ZEN ON The Kohler Waters Spa is one of only 48 spas in the world to claim Forbes Five Star distinction. I thoroughly enjoyed my Bamboo Bliss that was a peaceful full body massage with warm bamboo while my husband’s first time spa experience was Rain man—a special Vichy shower experience that combined hot stones on the back and feet, body exfoliation and moisturizing. Believing water is essential to life, the spa has many innovative water treatments and facial, and body treatments that will bring back balance into your life. At The Shops at Woodlake that provides casual shopping with free shuttle service from the resort, Yoga On The Lake offers more than 20 classes a week. While I was going through poses and postures, the serene view of the Wood Lake through floorto-ceiling bay windows was unparalleled. “We keep the room at around 29 degrees,” says Ashley Kohler, manager and instructor. “Our classes help bring you back to conscious living and help you become aware of your own health and nature. What we hope is that after a class, you will have connected your body and mind.”
ACTIVITIES I must admit, I’m much more a pilates person than an outdoor adventurer, so when I was given the choice between canoeing/ kayaking down about 11 kilometres of the Sheboygan River or horseback riding, I chose the latter. It was a beautiful way to explore the beauty of the river’s wildlife and view the vast valleys and meadows. Afterwards, I engaged in some trapshooting. Not familiar with this competitive target-hurtling activity, I gave up after
KOHLER DESIGN CENTER The name “Kohler” immediately conjures up bathroom and kitchen products but Kohler Design Center is so much more. You can bring your sketches and ideas for designing a new and improved room and experts will consult you on how you can do it best. New interactive and visual explorations—from custom showering to kitchen sinks, to custom interior and furniture—will help you find your comfort and personal style. VM
Sandhill Cabin Named after a pair of Sandhill cranes that return each year to the property, the private cabin is surrounded by nature and overflowing with rustic charm. Nestled on 13,068,000 square feet in the wilderness of Mosel, it is still close enough to enjoy the amenities of The American Club.

YOUR HOROSCOPE BY LOUIS ROBERT
Aries (March 21 to April 19) January is over. February and March is much kinder and leaves you time to think about your next steps. Late February and beyond brings more clarity and peace; however, you’re still very busy. Call the beautician as a new look is definitely on the agenda.
Taurus (April 20 to May 20) A passionate new relationship is possible. Don't fret about the extra weight you put on, you’re liked for more than just your sexy looks. Career success is also highlighted so don't be shy about looking for a raise or new opportunity.
Gemini (May 21 to June 21) You may have thought a project was completed but not so fast. By mid-March, you may have to redo a major component of the plan. Beware of unintentional saboteurs or too many cooks in the kitchen. If you can't run away from it all for a holiday, then flexibility is advised.
Cancer (June 21 to July 22) You can expect others to ask questions when you finally show off your sunny new romance. Already attached? Then a wonderful romantic holiday for two is just what the stars have on order.
Leo (July 23 to August 22) Generally, Mars in Scorpio is not friendly to Lions so people will still be bringing out your aggressive energy until mid-March. Are they aggressive or are you impatient? Lessons now aren't about what happens to you but are about how you respond to conflict. Your kittenish side will get better results than your raging lion.
Virgo (August 23 to September 22) Work productivity, romance, and avocations; all of the aforementioned should be going smoothly for you at the moment. If not, then analyze where you need to make improvements to take advantage of all the love currently available.
Libra (September 23 to October 23) Late winter sluggishness will soon give way to spring renewal. Keep focused on your goals as you can be so easily sidetracked by all the curveballs coming your way. Hidden resources may also arrive and you’ll feel like splurging on your wardrobe, but remember to maintain your financial balance while having fun this spring.
Scorpio (October 24 to November 21) The negative cycles are now well balanced by the positive planets so it's a mixed bag. Cut back where you can, but prepare for the new spring growth. Your energy is high but don't forget to meditate to find the inner peace you need to curtail your aggression. Slow down and pretend you’re a Taurus this spring and watch the positive results sprout.
Sagittarius (November 22 to December 21) You’ll collect your frequent flyer miles this year. One trip hardly ends before you have to pack for another it may seem. You love being a globetrotter but don't forget the details necessary to make your trips positive experiences. Shortcuts now could prove costly.
Capricorn (December 22 to January 19) The February blues are similar to warm browns to you as you’re in your element now. However, with that being said, you may have to destroy a few walls to break barriers and rebuild. Whether renovating your home, wardrobe or yourself, this could be a wonderful period of prosperity and growth for you.
Aquarius (January 20 to February 18) You are busier than you like to be now, but think about all that income you’re earning—or soon will be. Creating a new look for yourself will reflect your inner beauty so move forward since you’re currently surfing a wave of positive energy.
Pisces (February 19 to March 20) Similar to your Water-Bearer peer, you are also currently riding a wave of prosperity. Any confusion or self-delusion is of your own making so if you’re not feeling the love, then maybe a change of attitude is warranted. Count your blessings and be grateful for your current abundance to chase away any negative feelings. VM
