THE PASSION OF BALANCED LIVING®

TO-DO-LIST MAKEOVER

Founder/Publisher Olivier Felicio

Celebrity Guest Editor Michelle Beadle

Senior Managing Editor Phill Feltham Art Director Scott Jordan Managing Editor Inna Levchuk West Coast Entertainment Director Bonnie Siegler Graphic Designer Kaitlin Yep Editorial Assistant Corrina Mosca

If you’re anything like me, your purse is filled with loose post-it notes and good intentions. I’m currently sitting here, looking down at four different lists taped to the front of my Day Planner (and yes, I still use a pen and paper.) You might call this the epitome of disorganization. Well, no more. It’s time to give myself—and yourself—a list-making lifestyle makeover. Now, I’m not suggesting we stop making lists—that would be uncivilized. However, I believe it’s time to finish one task before moving onto the next. For my birthday last year, I was given sushi-making lessons. My knives have yet to touch a fish. However, the task sits somewhere at the top of one of my lists: Call to schedule a lesson. Stress levels seem to correlate directly with the growth and shrinkage of lists. This has to stop. To-do lists do not need to make or break our lives. In fact, I dare you to include relaxation on your to-do list and see what happens. Now, there are some tasks that we can’t omit. Exercise, for example, is one vital task that cannot be crossed off. I find nothing wrong with pouring ourselves into our Lululemon wardrobe and following the hottest new fitness trends. However, do your workout without criticism. Accept yourself (add this to your to-do list as well). I won’t wake up tomorrow and be asked to walk in the Victoria’s Secret fashion show—and that’s okay. As a matter of fact, it’s better than okay. I’m still going to enjoy a donut every once in a while, a glass of wine with dinner, but I am done with criticizing myself for it. Try new things. Add this to your to-do list. It took me 39 years before I finally tried a yoga class—but I did it. A mix of social anxiety and self-consciousness seemed to keep me away for years. However, after a couple of awkward poses and odd noises, I loved it. So much so, I soon joined pilates. Now, I’m on my MindBodyConnect app daily, signing up and exploring new routes to physical health. These days, I feel stronger, happier—and just a little bit wiser. A lot of my year is based on the sports calendar. My free days ebb and flow with the individual sport seasons. Over time, that’s caused a bit of a detachment from the enjoyment I once felt as a sports fan, and had a bit of a “it’s-my-job” effect on things. We try to love what we do, but there will be days when checking that item off the list is difficult, so ride that out. Bad days happen to everyone. Striving for perfection gives people headaches. Let’s take it a little easier on ourselves. We know when we’re giving it everything and at times, that will have to be enough. So let’s make some old-fashioned memories and maybe even indulge in a little quiet. Now, I’ve got some sushi to make.

A palatial home sitting on two pristine acres off the famed Sunset Boulevard, designed by renowned modernists Buff, Straub & Hensman, is the setting for our winter VIVA cover. Temperatures were heating up when our cover subject, actress and model Jaime King breezed in wearing jeans, sandals, and a t-shirt—sans makeup—with hair tied back off of her freshly scrubbed face. King’s upbeat and professional attitude was instantly contagious and the glam team went into overdrive. Wardrobe was selected with a meticulous eye; the gal knows what looks best on her 5’9” frame. “Every look, every costume gives me a different inner feeling. But, if I had to choose my favourite [costume] of the day, it would be the long, off-white cape.” After the last photo was taken and the glam team began packing up, King thanked everyone for helping her make the day a success. Our thanks go out to the actress as well. VM LOCATION PHOTO BY TODD GOODMAN, LA LIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY

HOW DO YOU DEFINE BALANCED LIVING?

For me, balanced living means having the time to be a hands-on mother as well as having the time to love, honor and care of myself. Self-care means that I’m able to love and honor and care for my children as well as my husband and friends. Balanced living also means engaging in inspiring activities that allow me to be creative and artistic. I don’t feel alive inside if I am not engaging in creative activities. I’ve been that way since I was a child. If all these components that I mentioned are happening seamlessly, then I feel my life has more balance.

ESCAPE TO PARADISE Peeling skin to chapped lips: cold weather is definitely not something that your skin signed up for. Let’s not forget the lack of desire to go outside and get active. NEW YEAR MAKEOVER Rejuvenate your dry, winter complexion with these stay-fresh celebrity secrets BY BONNIE SIEGLER

KATE BOSWORTH Makeup pro Lisa Storey likes to keep Bosworth looking very natural. “I like her skin to look dewy, vibrant and peachy, especially during colder months,” she says. “Many times, I use LaPrairie Cellular Radiance Cream Blush in Peach Glow, and I always prep her skin with Kate Somerville Dermal Quench Liquid Lift, which gives an immediate glow and holds in moisture.”

THE NATURAL WAY Add a summertime glow to colourless winter cheeks with a swipe of Gabriel Cosmetics’ blush in Apricot. Its peachy colour is infused with jojoba seed oil to both moisturize skin and prevent powdery buildup. (3g, $19.30)

SALMA HAYEK

THE NATURAL WAY

Jennifer Yepez, Hayek’s go-to hair gal, notes that Salma begins her hair regimen in the shower with Nuance’s rinseout mask. “Hydrating the cuticle before blow-drying is key,” she says. “The more brittle the hair, the most likely it is to attract any moisture in the atmosphere, swelling cuticles and causing frizz.”

For silky smooth locks, moisturize hair with the Intensive Hair Repair Mask with Blue-Green Algae by Aubrey Organics. This deep conditioner combines rich bluegreen algae with powerful emollients to give brittle, dry winter hair a real pickme-up. (113ml, $14.33)

RIHANNA This singing beauty is all about making a bold statement with her look. Recently, makeup artist Mylah Morales concentrated on the star’s lips to give her an ultra-glam air. “I first used Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lip Tar in Black Metal Dahlia and then put a glittery lipstick—MAC’s Lipstick in Rebel—over it to make it pop.”

THE NATURAL WAY To get RiRi’s perfect pout, try rocking a deep plum or orchid shade such as Ilia Cosmetics’ lipstick in Around the World. With its use of beeswax, castor seed oil and sesame seed oil, this certified organic, vegan and gluten-free product is sure to bring a smile to your lips. (4g, $26)

Want silky smooth hands like Sophia’s? Try Nova Scotia Fisherman’s Seabuckthorn and Shea Lotion. This 100 per cent natural hand and body cream is rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, helping to moisturize and repair parched skin. (100ml, $9.95)

While filming her hit “Chicago P.D,” Bush finds that her hands get very dry and cracked. “I like to moisturize my hands a lot,” she says, citing Ahava’s mineral hand cream as one of her favourites. The glycerin in the floral-tinged lotion leaves hands soft and supple.

odel and actress Melissa Boloña shares her bi-coastal homes with two Chihuahuas, Petal and Piper, and two Morkies, Paco and Poppy. Similar to her domestic life, the fashion plate has a full and busy career as well. For 2016, she is featured in “I Am Wrath”, “The Year of Spectacular Men” and aptly titled, “Dog Eat Dog” to name just three of her seven projects. She is also a model humanitarian who is involved with the J/P Haitian Relief Organization (JP/HRO). “In October, I was co-captain of the JP/HRO five-kilometre team during the New York City Marathon, which raised more than the actual marathon team,” says Boloña. Born in Greenwich, Connecticut, Boloña grew up predominantly in New Jersey but also ventured out in her early teens to live in Lima, Peru. Her first payday came when she was five, modeling for Tyco. Since then, Boloña has appeared on countless magazine covers and has done national ad campaigns for companies such as Love Haus Lingerie. In this feature, Boloña reveals why she is a sought-after model and actor. WHAT ARE YOUR THREE FASHION MUST-HAVES IN YOUR CLOSET?

“My grandma would always abide by having a nice pair of shoes and a nice handbag—and I would have to agree.” I definitely like 26

having a current chick handbag, shoes and a bodysuit in my closet. I am really into Chloe’s handbags and Aquazurra shoes at the moment. A body suit can be casual and sexy at the same time and can be paired with jeans or a skirt.” YOUR SKIN IS GORGEOUS. WHAT IS YOUR NUMBER ONE BEAUTY SECRET?

“Never fall asleep with your makeup on. Also, always wash your face no matter how tired you are and make sure to moisturize your face everyday with a quality cream. This should keep your skin looking young for decades.” WHAT IS YOUR SKINCARE SECRET? HOW DO YOU KEEP YOUR BODY LOOKING HEALTHY AND TRIM?

“In order to get into shape quickly, I go for a three to four mile run, which tones up everything. I also love workout classes and hiking, which I do a few times a week.” HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE BALANCED LIVING?

“Balanced living for me is keeping myself happy through diet and exercise. Food can totally dictate your mood so I balance healthy food with indulgences. Let’s face it: life is too short to eat boring food all the time. I also stay active every day through exercise or walking, which makes me feel good.”

The Scandinavian secret for healthy & strong hair Hair Volume is a Swedish hair supplement that provides your hair follicles with the nutrients they need to build strong and healthy hair. TM

What some people might not know is that diet can affect hair health. A balanced diet and nutrition is important for hair health and shine. The condition of our hair and skin actually reflects the state of our body on the inside.

DID YOU KNOW? Using a hair supplement with high amounts of hair nutrients can help reduce hair loss and give you back the fullness. It’s all about strengthening the hair follicle so it keeps your hair longer and builds better hairs.

My hairdresser noticed! ‘‘I started losing my hair on each side of my forehead and in the front. It bothered me so much! My sister-in-law gave me her magazines and I saw the ad for Hair Volume in there. I thought: “What have I got to lose?” so I ordered two boxes! At my next appointment with my hairdresser, she told me she noticed my hair was getting fuller and healthier. I am so glad Hair Volume worked for me and I strongly recommend it.” Lynda N, Ontario

HOW HAIR VOLUME WORKS TM

Apples contain natural growth nutrients called procyanidin B-2. Studies demonstrate that in concentrated form, this powerful antioxidant helps promote hair strength and health by stimulating the hair follicle1. Procyanidin B-2 was found to help transition the hair follicle from a resting to a growth phase. Available at participating pharmacies and health food stores. SOAP OR SALINE? A new study conducted by McMaster University has discovered that a simple saline solution might be more effective at cleaning wounds than soap and water. Researchers discovered that using low-pressure water with saline, instead of soap, was effective in cleaning open-fracture wounds as well as preventing infection following surgery. McMaster researchers reviewed medical records from over 2,000 patients at 41 medical facilities who suffered from open-fracture wounds in the arm or leg. Study results revealed that 14.8 per cent of patients who cleaned with soap required a second operation, when compared to the 11.6 per cent group who opted to clean their wounds using a simple saline solution.

TRY KINDNESS TO RELIEVE STRESS ECO WAR: BACON VS. LETTUCE Bacon lovers rejoice. According to a new study out of Carnegie Mellon University, eating fruits, vegetables, and seafood is more harmful to the environment than chowing down on a juicy BLT (hold the L and the T). According to study co-authors Michelle Tom, Paul Fischbeck and Chris Hendrickson, this is because fruits, veggies and fish have relatively high resource uses and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions per calorie. "Eating lettuce is over three times worse in greenhouse gas emissions than eating bacon," says Fischbeck. "Lots of common vegetables require more resources per calorie than you would think. Eggplant, celery and cucumbers look particularly bad when compared to pork or chicken." However, this doesn’t mean you should cut these healthy foods out—just be aware of how your diet may be affecting your carbon footprint. When possible, buy in-season fruits and vegetables from locally sourced vendors: the environment—and your body—will thank you.

We’ve all heard the old adage, “kill them with kindness.” A new study conducted by the Association for Psychological Science suggests that this adage is true—especially for the extermination of stress and negative emotions. A total of 77 adults, ranging in age from 18 to 44 years old, participated in the 14-day study. The participants were asked to report any stressful life events they experienced each day, as well as whether they had engaged in various helpful or kind behaviors toward others. Finally, they were asked to rate their daily mental health on a scale of zero to 100. Researchers found that helping others boosted participants’ daily well being; a greater number of generous behaviors was associated with higher levels of daily positive emotion and better overall mental health. “Our research shows that when we help others, we can also help ourselves,” says study author Emily Ansell. “Stressful days usually lead us to have a worse mood and poorer mental health, but our findings suggest that if we do small things for others, such as holding a door open for someone, we won't feel as poorly on stressful days.”

THE NEW “WHEY” TO IMPROVE YOUR HEALTH Looking to add a health booster to your favourite beverage? Try whey. According to a new study out of the Journal of Food, the calcium, vitamin D and prebiotic dietary fibre that the supplement provides may be extremely beneficial to your general well being. After 21 days of drinking whey-infused beverages, the study’s 30 volunteers found a significant decrease in their LDL-cholesterol and triglyceride levels. This could have especially remarkable implications in reducing the risk for heart attacks, strokes and diabetes. If you’re looking to improve your overall health in simple “wheys,” this one is certainly easy— and effective—to do. By reducing the overall level of bad cholesterols in your body, you’ll keep your heart pumping happily.

VISUALLY DEAF A new study from University College London reports that concentrating fully on visual tasks can render you “momentarily deaf.” So, think twice about checking Twitter while walking down a busy street—otherwise, you may be putting your life in danger.

COUGH & COLD MEDS FOR KIDS GOVERNMENT OPTS TO REMOVE HOMEOPATHIC MEDS FROM STORE SHELVES BY MARGOT MURPHY MOORE, PRESIDENT, CANADIAN HOMEOPATHIC PHARMACEUTICAL ASSOCIATION (CHPA)

F

or the past seven years, over-the-counter (OTC) cough and cold medications have not been available in Canada for children under the age of six. This followed a determination by Health Canada that these medications had an unacceptable degree of risk of adverse health outcomes and/or they just were not effective in treating cough and cold symptoms. Now, Health Canada has decided that homeopathic children’s medicines for cough, cold and flu should also be taken off the market. On July 31, 2015, Health Canada announced a policy decision to no longer permit claims (indications for use) for homeopathic cough and cold medicines for children under the age of 12, unless these claims are supported by “acceptable scientific evidence,” such as clinical trials. Among the reasons cited for the decision was that “current labeling on some homeopathic products may not provide Canadians with the information they need to make informed choices.” Health Canada also noted that it “is introducing these changes to ensure that Canadians who choose to use homeopathic products have the information they need to improve their safe use, especially parents trying to make the best choices for their children.” A closer look at the policy change reveals that parents will not have more information to make informed choice. In fact, 38

manufacturers will not be permitted to include any information on pediatric homeopathic medicines for cough, colds and flu for kids under 12, including claims, indications that the products are intended for children and dosage for children under the age of 12. What this really means is that children’s homeopathic cough, cold and flu medications will disappear from the Canadian marketplace in mid-2016. We believe this regulation will not provide parents with an informed choice, but rather leave them with no choice. Research in Canada, the U.S. and U.K., clearly illustrates that kids under the age of 12 and particularly kids under the age of six frequently suffer from minor upper respiratory infections lasting up to 15 days. This means not only lost time at school, but lost work time for parents, especially working moms. According to an analysis of work absences in 2011 by Statistics Canada, “the presence of preschool-age children exerts a strong influence on work absences for personal or family responsibilities. In 2011, full-time employees in families with at least one preschool-age child lost an average of 3.0 days, compared with only 1.4 for those in families without children.” VM VISIT VIVA’S FACEBOOK PAGE TO LEAVE YOUR COMMENTS

PHASE 2 UPCOMING INGREDIENTS

t's apparent that we're living in an overweight society. In addition, it is well-known that body weight is a good indicator of health, or lack thereof: diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and numerous other illnesses— not to mention hip and knee replacements—are all associated with being overweight and obese. As such, it is critical for anyone who is overweight to shed those pounds and fat and to achieve fitness to improve quality of life. The obvious fixes involve behavior modifications such as fairly intense exercise regimens and smarter eating/ smaller portions. Unfortunately, eating behavior modifications aren't always easy to achieve, and are even near impossible for many consumers. However, paying attention to carbohydrates is imperative. Two studies confirm that a low-carbohydrate approach to weight loss is the superior option when choosing a diet. On average, those following a low-carb diet can lose eight to 16 pounds and sustain that loss for at least a year. Yet, people who choose a low-carb diet often miss out on important nutrients including fiber, potassium, vitamin C and other phytochemicals that are significant to maintaining good health. However, simply incorporating Phase 2—an all-natural, non-stimulant proprietary ingredient found in many carbohydrate blocking nutritional supplements—into the weight loss program may reduce the absorption of starch and aid in weight control. One compelling study, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, concluded that a low-carb diet was superior to a low-fat diet for the 148 people of diverse ethnicities who participated in the study. The participants on the low-carb diet not only had a more significant decrease in weight (eight pounds, on average), but also reduced their cardiovascular risk factors compared to those on the low-fat diet. Another strong study, published by the Journal of American Medical Association, compared 48 previous studies including a total of 7,286 overweight and obese adults that confirmed the largest weight loss was with

40

low-carbohydrate diets. Weight loss differences between individual diets were minimal and on average, participants sustained a 16-pound reduction after a year. There are many natural products you can purchase that dramatically assist in controlling your carbohydrate absorption as you journey toward a healthy diet. One of these products is Phase 2 Carb Controller, shown in over a dozen published studies to reduce the way our bodies digest and absorb the starchy, fattening foods we love to eat. Phase 2 Carb Controller is the most researched ingredient available that helps support healthy weight loss. This proprietary extract of white kidney bean is a suitable option and effective for anyone seeking to control carbohydrate absorption while trying to lose weight. Studies of Phase 2 on human subjects have demonstrated that 66 per cent of dietary starches aren't digested and pass through the body as fiber. No side effects have ever been reported. Phase 2 is grown and manufactured in the United States, and is generally recognized as safe by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Phase 2 works by reducing the activity of the body's natural carbohydrate-digesting enzyme, alpha amylase. This means that Phase 2 allows for more starches to pass through the body, rather than be assimilated. Not only has Phase 2 been shown to reduce body weight as well as hip, waist and thigh circumferences, it has also been shown to reduce the glucose spike one experiences after eating starchy foods such as spaghetti, rice, potatoes and bread. HOW TO OVERCOME THE

WINTER BLUES EXPLORING NATURAL REMEDIES FOR SEASONAL AFFECTIVE DISORDER (SAD)

he dreaded winter blues. More correctly referred to as Seasonally Affective Disorder, or SAD, this condition is now considered a common disorder. People with normal mental health throughout most of the year begin to experience symptoms of depression as the seasons change. Fortunately, there are a number of natural remedies that can help to alleviate the condition and effectively cope with the changes of the seasons. ABOUT SAD SAD is a form of (clinical) depression that occurs in the fall and winter months. The most difficult months for those affected with SAD are January and February, probably in response to the fewer hours of daylight. Approximately two to six per cent of Canadians will experience SAD (winter depression) in their lifetime and another 15 per cent experience a milder form of SAD (“winter blues”). HOW SAD WORKS Two hormones are generally implicated in SAD: melatonin and serotonin. There is an increase in melatonin levels due to longer hours of darkness and a decrease in serotonin levels. Sunlight helps us balance melatonin, which is produced by the pineal gland and regulates our sleep-wake cycle. When darkness falls, your body secretes melatonin, which makes you feel sleepy. Your serotonin levels—the hormone associated with elevating your mood—rise when you're exposed to bright light. Serotonin is associated with sleep, mood, movement, eating and nervousness, and may be reduced with decreased sunlight. 42

TREATMENT OF SAD Light Therapy The first-line treatment for SAD is light therapy. Exposure to bright light daily via a full-spectrum light source is the treatment method most often recommended for patients whose SAD symptoms are severe enough to affect their daily lives. The light can be delivered through special lights with daily treatment sessions lasting from 15 to 30 minutes. Light therapy can help regulate the sleep-wake cycle and reduce the secretion of melatonin. It is effective in as many as 70 per cent of patients with many finding relief within two weeks of beginning light therapy. A few mild side effects have been reported, including eyestrain, headaches, irritability and insomnia; the latter occurring if treatment is taken too late in the day. Alternatively, you can opt for a treatment called dawn simulation. Dawn simulation, a technique that replicates an earlier dawn through exposure to artificial light, is also proven to alleviate some SAD symptoms. Instead of sitting in front of a light box for 30 minutes, this strategy delivers a dim light automatically when you wake up via a tool that you can purchase and place beside your bed. The light gradually gets brighter to simulate a sunrise. Diet It should come as no surprise that certain foods can influence how we feel. Our diet is often overlooked as a powerful tool that can affect our mental health.

Protein Choose healthier proteins (fish, egg yolks, tofue, legumes, quinoa) and consume a small amount three times per day. Proteins contain important amino acids such as tyrosine, which can positively affect the levels of norepinephrine and dopamine in our brains. Protein may help your mood, increase energy and fight fatigue. Carbohydrates Craving carbohydrates, especially sweets, is a common symptom of SAD. The boost in energy you get from these simple carbs is temporary, and the extra sweets can mean you'll put on weight. Try to eat fewer simple carbohydrates, substituting more complex carbohydrates, such as whole grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds. Fibre Increase fibre (chia seeds, ground flaxseeds), protein and omega 3 fatty acids to help balance blood sugar levels.

St. John’s Wort This herbal remedy has long been used in Europe as a treatment for mood disorders. St. John’s Wort modulates the effects of serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine. Standardized extracts have proved as effective as Prozac in the treatment of mild to moderate depression. As it can alter the metabolism of numerous medications, ask your physician before combining the herb with prescription medications. Exercise Daily aerobic exercise is the most effective treatment for mild to moderate depression. For milder cases of SAD, long daily walk outdoors or arrange your home or office so that you're exposed to outdoor light from a window during the day. VM

SAD SYMPTOMS Symptoms of SAD are typical of depression

Caffeine Caffeine can suppress serotonin, so choose other beverages besides coffee or energy drinks. Instead of drinking too much coffee, have a few cups of tea. Tea has less caffeine than coffee but enough to help with an alert state of mind. Black, green and oolong tea also contain an amino acid called theanine, which works with caffeine to improve focus and attention.

SUPPLEMENTS Omega-3 Recent studies suggest that omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil may be helpful in influencing our moods and helping with symptoms of depression. Omega-3s may help maintain healthy levels of the brain chemicals dopamine and serotonin. One study showed that people with lower blood levels of omega-3s were more likely to have symptoms of depression and a more negative outlook while those with higher blood levels demonstrated the opposite emotional states. A combined total of 1,000 to 2,000 milligrams of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), the essential fatty acids found within fish oil, are recommended per day for mild depression. Vitamin D Low levels of vitamin D have been linked to depression. This nutrient helps regulate the activity of neurotransmitters such as melatonin, serotonin, and dopamine. A 2010 review that looked at the effects of vitamin D on different kinds of depression and anxiety concluded that treating vitamin D deficiencies in people with depression might be an easy and cost-effective way to improve mental health. In another study, researchers from the University of Toronto noticed that people who were suffering from depression, particularly those with SAD, tended to improve as their levels of vitamin D in the body increased over the course of a year. Researchers, though, are unsure how much vitamin D is ideal.

our thyroid, the butterfly-shaped gland in your neck, produces hormones, which control virtually every organ in your body as well as your metabolism and heart rate. When too much hormone is produced, your body uses energy faster than it should, which often leads to heat intolerance, irritability, heart palpitations and weight loss. If not enough hormone is produced, you are likely to experience fatigue, dry skin and hair, cold intolerance and weight gain.

erals could help decrease symptoms and prevent recurrence of malnutrition-induced thyroid disease. Another study demonstrated that using conventional medication in the treatment of hyperthyroidism due to Graves’ disease led towards normalizing magnesium levels. These results are useful with further investigation on whether magnesium could be used therapeutically and if a correction of magnesium deficiency could be beneficial towards correcting thyroid abnormalities. ❯ WHOLE AND UNREFINED GRAINS, COCOA, ALMONDS, GREEN

PLEASE CONSULT YOUR HEALTH-CARE PRACTITIONER FOR ANY HEALTH CONCERNS.

THE TRUTH ABOUT THYROID DISEASE Thyroid disorders affect about 200 million people in the world (0.8 to five per cent of the population), and are four to seven times more common in women. They include hyper- and hypothyroidism, goiter, thyroid cancer, Graves’ disease and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. Pharmaceutical medications that are common for hypothyroid status include Synthroid and Cytomel, which are replacement drugs for a hormone normally produced by the thyroid gland. Hyperthyroidism is treated by radioactive iodine or anti-thyroid medications, such as Methimazole. There are several natural options available to treat thyroid conditions that can be used in conjunction with these medications or on their own, such as selenium, kelp and zinc. However, more recent attention has been drawn to other options, such as magnesium and vitamin D. MAGNESIUM Magnesium is a vital part of cellular reactions; it is involved in metabolism, DNA replication, repair, transport mechanisms and cell proliferation. Food sources that are high in magnesium are whole and unrefined grains, seeds, cocoa, nuts, almonds, green leafy vegetables, avocados and fish. Magnesium has been used in treating arrhythmia, hypertension, high cholesterol, premenstrual syndrome, asthma, diabetes and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), in doses of 100 to 400 milligrams on average taken with meals. More recently, the relationship between magnesium abnormalities and the development of thyroid disorders has been considered. A study on metabolic disorders indicated that mineral deficiencies, including magnesium, were found in patients with autoimmune thyroid disease. It suggests that an improved diet via maintenance of required daily intakes of vitamins and min-

LEAFY VEGETABLES, AND FISH ARE HIGH IN MAGNESIUM.

VITAMIN D Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that is found in certain foods and can be produced internally when ultraviolet rays hit the skin. This vitamin’s function in the body is for bone and cell growth, neurological function, normal inflammatory response and thyroid optimization. Food sources of vitamin D include cod liver oil, swordfish, salmon, milk and liver. The role that vitamin D plays in the development and treatment of thyroid conditions, such as Graves’ disease and thyroid cancer, remains to be uncovered. One study showed that the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency was significantly higher in Graves’ disease patients. It also suggests that vitamin D deficiency might be an independent risk factor for predicting failure of radioactive iodine therapy in patients suffering from Graves’ disease. Overall, given that thyroid conditions can be detrimental if they are not treated and overlap with other diagnoses, it is important to consider several effective treatment options, including conventional and natural ones. Evidence has suggested a relationship between lower magnesium levels and their potential correlation that could help in treating thyroid autoimmune and other thyroid-related diseases. Vitamin D has shown efficacy in preventing the migration of certain thyroid cancer cells, helping predict the success of some conventional thyroid treatments. These two powerful supplements have shown promise as potential effective therapeutic targets in thyroid disease, enabling a greater spectrum of choice of natural treatments for practitioners and patients. ❯ COD LIVER OIL, SWORDFISH, SALMON, MILK AND LIVER CONTAIN VITAMIN D. fter many years of grueling pain, weight gain, and infertility treatments, while shuttling among nine different doctors, actress Jaime King, best known for roles in films “Sin City,” “Pearl Harbor” and TV’s recent “Hart of Dixie,” finally had her answer—endometriosis. Endometriosis, as defined by the Mayo Clinic, is a painful disorder, in which the tissue that normally lines inside of the uterus, grows on the outside. Her struggles with endometriosis and polycystic ovary syndrome led to infertility and, ultimately, five miscarriages prior to her first successful pregnancy. James Knight Newman was born in October 2013, while her second son with husband, film director Kyle Newman, was born in July 2015. The ecstatic couple named him Leo Thames. Taylor Swift—yes, that Taylor Swift—was named as the child’s godmother. King, a native of Nebraska, had already made a name for herself appearing in many top fashion magazines before leaving New York’s runway scene for Los Angeles at the age of 19 to focus on acting. When King was cast in Newman’s Star Wars-themed movie, “Fanboys,” in 2006, the couple connected instantly and married soon thereafter. “If it wasn’t for my husband, I don’t think I’d have much of a social circle,” King says. “I wouldn’t have the happiness I currently enjoy with my children and I wouldn’t have the unconditional love.”

The actress enjoys being at home with friends and family. “That’s what makes me happy.” MEDICAL STRUGGLES “Endometriosis and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) cause infertility,” explains King on her struggles to have children. Unfortunately, many women of various ages struggle with infertility. Through her twenties, the now 36-year-old suffered with maladies not normally associated with typical menstrual cycles, including severe pain, heavy menstrual bleeding, passing out, weight gain in hips and thighs, nausea, and a feeling that she just couldn’t get out of bed. “I just felt these were normal symptoms that every woman had.” “There is no cure for endometriosis but, there are remedies,” King says she took birth control pills, which is one way to suppress endometriosis. The actress wants to be outspoken about her infertility issues because she hid her struggles for a long time out of shame. “I hear about so many women going through the same [issues]. If I’m open about it, hopefully, I can help educate women and I can use my voice to spread the word,” says King. PRECIOUS “ME TIME” King went through nearly five years of fertility treatments, only to end up conceiving natu-

I grew up in an industry that the way my body looked was my value, and that’s a lie. rally. Now, similar to other new mothers, King is adjusting to a life disrupted by a toddler and infant. “I don’t sleep much”. She balances a busy life with two young kids, a husband and a thriving career that now includes her maternity fashion line, which is available at A Pea In The Pod high-end maternity boutiques. “At night, I love to write, read, catch up on my favourite TV shows and songs,” says King. “I love late nights because there’s a feeling of peace— everyone’s in bed and I have silence in a quiet place...” Other forms of “me time” for the actress include hiking and walking around her hilly neighbourhood, writing and reading poetry, photography and meditation. “It’s all the little moments in between where I find ‘me time.’” FREE SPIRIT While her life thrives on daily organized chaos, King’s thoughts, actions and moods are centred in a free spirit that stems from her middle-class childhood and being raised with three siblings. “My parents couldn’t afford to pay all of our college tuitions or buy us cars for our ‘Sweet 16’ birthdays,” she says. “Every summer we went to the Ozarks for vacation and that was very special for me because I didn’t know anything different. It was all about love and love can be very powerful. Growing up, I wasn’t popular or cool; I was artsy and creative. So am I a free spirit? I would say this: within discipline I find freedom, so I’m very disciplined and because of that, I’m free.” NEW MOM, NEW STAPLES During her modeling heyday, King admits that she did not have the best eating habits. Standing at 5’9,” she illustrates how she takes better care 52

of herself. “I’d be lying if I said I didn’t care about my weight, but I’m not obsessed with it. I grew up in an industry that the way my body looked was my value, and that’s a lie. I want to be lean, healthy, vibrant and strong.” To achieve that, King eats as much farm-to-table and whole foods as possible. King’s fridge is stocked with green smoothies, carrots, celery, cheese, turkey slices, berries, dark chocolates and lean meats. “I love hamburgers,” she admits. If the actress has a signature dish, it would be pasta with roasted Brussel sprouts and roasted butternut squash. “When I’m working 12 to 15 hour days, I want to make sure I’m getting the same nutrients that my mother was giving us. Many of our family members were farmers and she made sure we had well-rounded meals. That’s what I want for my family, too.” Vitamins Bs, C and D along with magnesium play an important role in King’s life. “Magnesium is very relaxing for the muscles and the mind—a good stress-release supplement.” THE GIRL WITH MANY TATOOS King added a sword tattoo to her many other inks after her son, James Knight, was born—and she wants to augment her body with another one soon. The actress wants a tattoo that says, “Forgive them for they know not what they do,” which is a quote taken from Luke 23:34, a scripture verse from the Bible. “My goal and mantra in life is to always know that despite the negativity in the world, people are not all haters. We are not Neanderthals anymore. We need to change society and the people hurting on the inside. I don’t want my children growing up in a world without love.” VM

NOT JUST FOR MONKEYS You don’t need to be told that bananas are good for you or that they taste great in fruit parfaits or your ritual morning smoothie. However, did you know that bananas contain a whopping 400-plus milligrams of potassium, which helps reduce blood pressure? Furthermore, this low-fat fruit is also a great source of fibre, which decreases the risk of heart disease. Bananas taste great on their own, in a smoothie, in a fruit parfait—or with Red Curried Beef (recipe on page 60). You might have a new favourite meal.

WHAT’S IN YOUR FRIDGE: SEAN KANAN THE BUSY ACTOR, HUSBAND AND FATHER OF FIVE TALKS ABOUT HIS FAVOURITE HEALTHY SNACKS, LIFE’S LITTLE INDULGENCES AND FEEDING HIS BROOD. Occupation: Stars as the devilishly sexy Deacon Sharpe on The Bold and the Beautiful. What’s your secret food vice? Jersey Mike’s Subs. Any other guilty pleasures? I love Chinese food; however, I have to be very careful when I eat it due to the high sodium content. Lately, I order it without any soy sauce. What are some of your favourite healthy snacks? I like hummus so I’ll cut up vegetables and use hummus for dip. What’s the strangest food you ever tried? I’ve eaten alligator, frog, goat, rabbit and very possibly horse (by accident) when I was in Brazil. If you were making dinner for your family tonight, what would it be? One of my favourite family meals is sautéed chicken puttanesca, which incorporates olives, onions, tomatoes and artichokes. I serve it over quinoa. Do you have any food sensitivities? I try to avoid foods that cause inflammation. I minimize dairy and almost never eat fried food. I have also dramatically reduced processed foods in my diet, and limit sugar and flour. What must you always have in your fridge? Bubbies Pickles What type of produce is always in your kitchen? My favorite fruit is mango so I usually have that on hand. I love to chop

it up with a little purple onion and tomato and use it to top off salmon dishes—like a mango salsa. If you weren’t an actor what would you be doing? Hopefully, it would be something that allows me to inspire people and effect positive change. What’s up for you next? I just finished filming the movie Limelight and am starting my sixteenth year as Deacon Sharpe on The Bold and the Beautiful.

HOME DÉCOR TRENDS WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN 2016 BY MELISSA DAVIS

A

s another year begins, we look forward to reinventing and improving the last year’s version of ourselves. I like to research the latest and greatest and then consider how they might make my life better, healthier and easier, and implement the ideas born out of necessity. I look at trends in much the same way. I find that redecorating each year with a fresh colour or the latest style is a bit unfulfilling. Similar to a new diet that only lasts two weeks post-resolution, so too will your love affair with all things pink or patterned. Some trends develop more organically because it’s something a lot of us either want or need and those are the trends that offer up innovative new products or smart approaches to how we use the space in our homes. STYLE TRENDS Home décor style trends are often closely tied to fashion and this year is no different. We’re seeing a lot of specific prints and colours, such as the infusion of Victorian patterns and florals used in both traditional and contemporary spaces. All-white walls are back in more popularity than ever. Akin to an art gallery, it does offer the best backdrop to showcase our art and artful furnishings. 68

VIVAMAGONLINE.COM / WINTER 2016

VIVA Home Feature.indd 68

2015-12-23 2:02 PM

The trend I’m most excited about this year is something called Urban Organic. This is a more livable approach to the contemporary design with clean orderly spaces that offers visual simplicity of a modern space combined with more natural materials and textures. Using the same muted colour palette knits, linens, leathers, varied woods and stones all play together offering far more warmth and approachability than previous incarnations of the contemporary design. KITCHEN TRENDS Our love affair with all things shiny stainless seems to have run its course. From a designer’s point of view, it’s long been a pet peeve. As kitchen designs became more open-concept, we naturally wanted the utility of the space to become more integrated. Shiny silver appliances in a white kitchen only worked to counteract what otherwise could have been a more visually subtle space. This year, the trend towards integrated appliances with panel-fronts or new colour options continues to gain in popularity. For example, Samsung’s new black stainless finish offers the glam of stainless with a depth that works beautifully with wood tones and the still popular grey cabinetry. Even the kitchen sink can now be fully integrated. The latest products from Blanco show a white resin SILGRANIT kitchen sink that blends beautifully with the still popular white composite counters. Say “goodbye” to the streaky stainless and welcome bright white everything. We’re also seeing a lot of mixing of materials and elements in kitchen design. Combinations of open and closed storage, wood shelves on natural stone backsplashes, opting for one material on the island and another on the perimeter and two-toned cabinets are just a few of the ways homeowners are getting creative. WASHROOM TRENDS Most trends are born of necessity. I think the bathroom trends this year speak to our need to disconnect if only for a short time each day to pamper ourselves. Home washroom design is all about relaxation. A distinctively spa style ranges from the gentle natural hued material choices to the addition of small perks such as heated floors, heated towel racks and steam showers. The growing accessibility of these once luxury items has also contributed to the popularity of this trend. If you’re embarking on a washroom renovation this year, consider Nuheat heated floors as an option. The customized electric pads are incredibly easy to install. They also eliminate the need for additional heaters or vents—something that can make a big difference for planning in a tight space. Opt for natural stones or one of the maintenance free porcelains that perfectly emulate the real material. If you’re considering a home update, now is the time to research all the latest options out there. Remember, your home is your personal haven, so look to the trends, but follow your style. PLAYING DOGGIE DENTIST WHY CARING FOR YOUR PET’S PEARLY WHITES IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN YOU’D THINK BY CORRINA MOSCA

D

ogs are infamous for their bad breath, an untimely whiff of which can send anyone running. However, despite the old adage that a dog’s mouth is cleaner than a human’s, periodontal disease is still a concern for your pets. In fact, an astonishing 80 per cent of cats and dogs display some form of this condition. “It’s a very common problem,” says Dr. Clayton Greenway, DVM, B.Sc, lead veterinarian at Scarborough’s West Hill Animal Clinic. “You should at least be aware of it.” KNOW THE RISKS “The fact is, dental disease harbours a lot of bacteria,” he continues. In extreme cases, oral bacteria may spread through an animal’s body, potentially causing infections in other major organs such as the heart, liver and kidneys. ACE THE ORAL EXAM If you suspect that your pet may have periodontal disease, give them an at-home check-up. “What [you] really want to look for is inflammation—or redness—of the gums,” explains Dr. Greenway, who also hosts Animal House on Newstalk 1010 radio. This is a major sign of gingivitis, which causes the gums to recede away from the teeth, advancing dental disease. Moreover, he adds that pain—a main indicator of oral disease— is “rarely noticed by owners.” Unfortunately, your pets can’t communicate their discomfort with you—if you’re concerned about their oral health, visit your veterinarian. BRUSHING IS KEY Luckily, this ailment is preventable with proper oral care. The best way to maintain your pet’s pearly whites, says the American Veterinary Dental College (AVDC), is through daily brushing. Before you start, buy pet-specific toothpaste. As obvious as

this may seem, never use human dental products on your animals: most of them include fluoride, which is toxic to cats and dogs. Take the time to pick out well-researched and tested pet products with the Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) seal. “[Brushing is] a lot easier to do than people think,” notes Dr. Greenway. “You can [simply] hold the muzzle closed and brush the outsides of the teeth [and gums].” While some animals may initially be finicky, most can grow to accept brushing. Dr. Greenway suggests acclimating them slowly to a routine, first introducing your pet to toothpaste, then to finger brushing, and finally to a toothbrush. AN ALTERNATIVE FOR FUSSY FIDO Have no fear: if your pet doesn’t accept brushing, other options are available. Dr. Greenway notes that while brushing is best, dental diets—or medically formulated foods—work as well. While oral rinses and special treats are also available, the AVDC—and Dr. Greenway—note that they’re “far inferior” to brushing. Cesar Milan—also known as The Dog Whisperer—suggests that reliance on them is comparable to humans chewing gum and using mouthwash for dental maintenance. DOGGIE DENTIST Even with a thorough care routine, your pet’s pearly whites still require a check-up every six to twelve months. “When I was a kid, animals didn’t [get] teeth cleanings,” says Dr. Greenway. “[But] it is an important factor in overall healthcare. [Still,] for some people, their philosophy of ownership may not include dental hygiene or dental care … don’t feel guilty … it can be expensive.” The bottom line: if you are able to provide oral care to your pets, it can make a world of a difference. Treat your pet’s teeth like you would your own, and you’ll both be smiling. VM WINTER 2016 / VIVAMAGONLINE.COM

A PATH WELL TRAVELLED LINDA GRAY FINDS THE ROAD TO HAPPINESS BY BONNIE SIEGLER

L

inda Gray, the actress best known for her role as J.R.’s wife, Sue Ellen Ewing, on the show Dallas, just celebrated her 75th birthday in September 2015. The actress is taken aback by this milestone. “I got to this age and, honestly, I take wonderful breaths. [I find that] I am not critical or judgmental anymore. Instead, I giggle more and I don’t get hung up on things.” Currently, Gray is looking forward to the myriad of opportunities the next decade has to offer. “I want to play with my grandchildren, travel, eat lovely foods, and be with beautiful people who don’t sap me, but energize me.” The busy actress, mom, and grandmother has discovered wellness strategies that keep her calm and centred when she becomes overwhelmed by her hectic lifestyle. Her first memoir, “The Road To Happiness Is Always Under Constructions”, just arrived into bookstores and her recent role in Hallmark Channel’s “Perfect Match” was a favourite among viewers. “I don’t take all of this for granted,” says the iconic star. “I take a ‘gratitude walk’ every day because, number one, I have legs. When I had polio as a child, it was iffy. When I began writing my book, I realized my life has been very interesting in a non-sensational way. ” EXERCISE Besides her daily morning ‘gratitude walk,’ the former model meditates for 20 minutes every morning, exercises with free weights to boost her bone density, and then occasionally jumps on her rebounder trampoline. “I’ll watch morning television or listen to some Aretha [Franklin], Stevie Wonder, mixed with Sting, and Tony Bennett, while on my rebounder.” Gray places an emphasis on how much she loved music: “It’s for the soul.” HYDRATION Throughout her morning routine, Gray hydrates her system with six cups of water mixed with lemon juice. She says, “I don’t stand there and gulp it down…it’s a gradual thing, but it’s all about hydration.” SKINCARE For healthy skin, Gray dry brushes her entire body in the shower once she has completed her walk and meditation. “It only takes a few minutes, but it takes off all of my the dead skin. Afterward, I moisturize my body and I’m ready for my day.”

72

SUNSCREEN Living and walking on her ranch outside of Los Angeles, Gray is a big fan of SPF protection and favours an organic-tinted moisturizer with a high SPF factor. Gray uses an oil to remove her makeup at night. “I like to go through the ingredients of every product because I don’t like putting toxins and chemicals on my skin,” she says. There are a lot of those on the planet now; you can’t escape them anymore.” FOODS Gray is very cautious of not only what she puts on her skin, but what she eats as well. During the filming of the last incarnation of Dallas, Gray brown bagged the food she brought to work. “[I brought] a couple of hard boiled eggs, an apple with almond butter for that 3-o’clock crash, and a bag of goji berries mixed with pumpkin seeds,” she says. For Gray, a typical breakfast can include some poached eggs on top of sautéed baby spinach, as well as a protein shake with almond milk, frozen pineapple and coconut oil. “I have lots of energy until a late lunch, which could be an arugula salad with salmon tossed with olive oil and lemon dressing. All my meals are very clean.” THE PUBLIC EYE Gray admits that growing older in the public eye can be a challenge. “I have been in the public eye most of my life and people remember me when I was 35 years old. Well, time changes, and skin gets looser,” she says. However, Gray hasn’t let age sap her confidence. “I think I look pretty good. My smile, the light in my eyes and a positive attitude are the results of a life well lived.” VM

rowing up in a house full of females, a young Michelle Beadle played almost every sport imaginable: basketball, baseball, track, powder puff football and traditional football. “I played until my body proved I was not the competitor I fancied myself to be,” says the host of ESPN’s SportsNation. “I used to hang with the boys as a kid, and it was that world of one-upmanship that fueled my competition vein,” says Beadle. She recalls that there were times when it proved to be a bit crippling, and her fear of losing got in the way of having fun and trying new things. She recalls asking her parents to throw out all the green ribbons. Only the top spot blues survived. “Luckily, as you grow older and wiser, you realize that failing is just part of the gig,” says Beadle. On a personal level, Beadle has moved on from competitive sports and focuses instead on pilates, hot yoga, hiking and running to stay fit. Taking advantage of Los Angeles’ temperate year-round climate, Beadle spends a great deal of time outdoors. “That combination of sweat and sun is the best mood booster on the market,” she says. What else gives her emotions a boost? “Cheese. Lots of cheese and TV binge watching,” she laughs.

74

“My fridge is a depressing place where dreams go to die. It’s basically filled with cheese and not too much else.” “I’m relatively new to cooking, but I just tried the zucchini pasta dish and—shocker—I loved it.” Vegetable noodles are a nice substitute for regular pasta, which isn’t as kind to me now as it was in my twenties.” Approaching her 40th birthday, Beadle says her focus is on keeping her core in shape—that is where pasta tends to find a home. “It’s where I gain weight, and it’s where I tend to fixate when I’m having a day of self-awareness.” On a good day, that self-awareness allows her to appreciate her arms as a favourite body part. “Well, really this random muscle in my shoulder that I’ve never noticed before—I’m digging it.” Keeping up a certain level of activity is Beadle’s daily fitness goal or else she says: “I might find myself melting into my couch watching some TV all evening.” Her favourite sport to watch is NBA, specifically the San Antonio Spurs. “There are times when being a sports fan has made me become a bit jaded, but as a 25-plus year fan of the Spurs, I can comfortably say that I feel good cheering them on—and five championships have made it even sweeter.” VM

IT TAKES

TWO UNLOCK THE SECRET TO A HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP

BY AVIVA REIMER

W

ell, here we are in a whole new dimension of relationships and dating. There is a frenzy in the dating world and it’s turning into more negative experiences versus positive for many daters. According to our company’s personal research, the divorce rate is on the rise. During our qualification process, we speak to at least 15 people a day looking to register into our database. That’s when we learn about many past relationship experiences that are currently creating a lack of faith in people and marriage. Many people claim that there is an average of two to three couples they know who are going through a divorce or coping with a relationship breakdown. However, in spite of these findings, we have conversed with many people who still believe in love and passion and who are ready to share their life with someone special. It is important to remember that love is more than a feeling, but a decision to commit oneself to another. Commitment involves staying with that special someone in happy—and difficult—times. In my experience, it is not uncommon for a man to share how his relationship lacks excitement. Similarly, a woman will express how her partner isn’t appreciative or attentive. Relationships are work and require nurturing and attention. We must do all that is possible and necessary to nurture our relationships—even when it seems that our partner does not make any effort. 76

Men and women exerting the proper attention in their relationships have become increasingly difficult. Technology has negatively impacted people’s interpersonal skills because of phones and computers, which, consequently, has impacted their relationships. I can write a book on the differences between men versus women; however, I want to share some great insight on how you can better understand your man. Confidence is a healthy starting place in any relationship. The strongest relationship comes from loving yourself first and everyone else second. Respecting yourself first will also earn the respect of your partner. Loving yourself does not mean being a selfish person. On the contrary, loving yourself means to be self-assured and confident in who you are and what you want out of your life. Additionally, loving yourself means staying true to your beliefs and not settling for less. Women are strong creatures who need to feel safe and secure with their men on many levels. In order to solidify our needs, we must understand and accept the needs of our men as well. After speaking with hundreds of men, I can tell you that their needs are simple. VM What do you think they are? Send your thoughts to contact@vivamagonline.com

VIVA READERS SHARE THEIR SECRETS TO ATTAINING OPTIMAL HEALTH, NATURALLY

JODI MACLEOD AGE: 35 OCCUPATION: Ultrasound technologist HEALTH ISSUE: Multiple sclerosis HEALTH RECOMMENDATIONS: I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) in January of 2010 after having an MRI of my brain and spine. Over the last six years, I have had three significant relapses with symptoms including visual disturbances, numbness, loss of strength as well as walking difficulties. My treatments have varied over the years from intramuscular injections to daily capsules. Recently, I underwent an intensive five-day course of intravenous medications to help stop the progression of my disease. I was also instructed to take 4,000 IU of vitamin D daily. In addition, I take cranberry pills to help prevent urinary tract infections, which are frequent in MS patients. THE RESULTS: MS is not yet curable. However, recent studies are showing promising results in stopping the disease’s progression. Since MS medications affect the immune system, it is essential for me to get enough sleep, make healthy food choices and live actively. Having a supportive network of family and friends has also been vital in living with this disease. But, most importantly, it has been my faith in God, who not only created and redeemed me, but also sustains me daily with his presence.

ELENA VASILENKA AGE: 33 OCCUPATION: Naam yoga teacher and happiness expert HEALTH ISSUES: Depression, bipolar, binge eating and OCD disorders HEALTH RECOMMENDATIONS: I was diagnosed with my disorders in my early 20s. Over the past 10 years, I’ve tried many holistic methods, including fasting, juicing, supplements and hypnosis. What truly helped me recover was a spiritual path— Naam Yoga. This spiritual practice introduced me to mantra meditation, breathing and an energy healing system called Harmonyum healing. THE RESULTS: I felt better after just few sessions of Naam Yoga practice and now, five years later, I can say with confidence that I’ve recovered from all mental and emotional disorders that I had and I am finally able to develop an incredible connection with the Divine Unconditional Love, which helps me heal all my wounds. Now, I love my life and myself more than ever, and all my relationships with people are full of grace and love. I’ve left sadness, depression and self-distraction in the past, and I am forever grateful that I am now able to feel peaceful, confident and happy every day.

PLEASE CONSULT YOUR HEALTH-CARE PRACTITIONER FOR ANY HEALTH CONCERNS.

JOE GONCALVES AGE: 66 OCCUPATION: Self employed watchmaker/jeweller since 1966 HEALTH ISSUE: Diagnosed in 2010 with stage 4 lung cancer (Given 3 weeks to live) HEALTH RECOMMENDATIONS: Unfortunately, one year of chemotherapy at a local hospital didn’t work and I was advised that I should sign myself into a palliative care centre to control any forthcoming pain. Fortunately, I had an appointment at Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) and was referred to Dr. Natasha Leighl who, after initial tests and chemotherapy, suggested a new trial medication. Dr. Leighl felt it might be helpful to reduce my tumour. After a thorough medical examination, I was approved for the trial. Within a six-month period, my tumor was reduced by 75 per cent. THE RESULTS: I haven’t undergone any cancer treatment for a year and a half—and I feel healthy. Quarterly checkups, exercising, riding my bike, music and traveling keep me quite busy. My story would not be complete without thanking Dr. Leighl, Dianne at Princess Margaret Hospital, my wife, my children, my whole family and my friends for their support. I am forever thankful to PMH; their hard work has helped me to remain on track to fulfill my dream of living to be 100 years old. Thank you and always remain positive.

PAMELA VIKTORIA AGE: 41 OCCUPATION: Detox lifestyle blogger and author HEALTH ISSUE: Chronic immunological fatigue, fibromyalgia, adrenal and thyroid fatigue, sinus issues and EMF sensitivity HEALTH RECOMMENDATIONS: I lowered my exposure to chemicals. For the most part, I only eat raw vegetables and fruit, soaked nuts and seeds, as well as drink distilled water and plenty of spice teas. I fast weekly, do salt water flushes and a master cleanse. These practices help my body get rid of chemicals. Also, I walk one or two hours a day and use a chi machine before going to bed. I stay active with many different hobbies, including gymnastics, archery, guitar, photography, traveling and camping. These hobbies bring joy and excitement into my life. THE RESULTS: At my worst during chronic fatigue, I had a lot of acid in my system. Eventually, my immunity became stronger; I passed parasites and looked younger and more energetic. As metals moved out, my EMF (electromagnetic field sensitivity) lowered. I no longer have fibromyalgia, but I still need to work on my thyroid.

hile Canadian weather might be frightful with single digit temperatures, relaxation, rejuvenation, and outdoor recreation are the keys to a perfect vacation in sunny Scottsdale, Arizona. Surrounded by stunning desert vistas and spectacular mountains, this destination for the winter weary will lift your spirits whether you are into golfing, tanning, drinking lemonade or margaritas, or tackling a hike up Bell Rock, a frequently traveled rocky hill for hikers. LODGING The Sanctuary Camelback Mountain Resort is nestled within the awesome landscapes of Camelback Mountain. The luxury resort is situated on 53 acres and has everything to offer to its guests, whose age ranges from five to 95. I signed up for a Pilates class, which was more invigorating than any outdoor hike. But, then again, I prefer the formalities of breath core techniques over huffing and puffing in hiking boots. Ranked the 2014 top resort in Arizona by Conde Nast Traveler, the Sanctuary Camelback Resort offers guests an array of accommodations that provide panoramic views of the majestic mountains. EATS The dining was another exquisite experience, where the Food Network celebrity and executive chef Beau MacMillan’s passion for fresh local ingredients is showcased in almost every serving of food. Being a mac ‘n’ cheese devotee, I was not disappointed with chef MacMillan’s take on this tasty dish. The miso-glazed salmon with soba noodles, my main dish, certainly did not disappoint either. Besides enjoying some delicious food, I decided to relax at the Asian-inspired Sanctuary spa with a massage. Then, a nap

VIVA Travel Feature.indd 81

under one of the cabanas by the infinity pool was definitely a dream to remember. OLD TOWN The Sanctuary concierge told my husband and me about the Mission Restaurant in Old Town Scottsdale, which is located next door to the Old Adobe Mission church. Although we made reservations for the following night, we still had to wait for over an hour to be seated. This gave us time to briefly explore the unique boutiques and art galleries in Old Town. Once seated at our table, the casual and dark atmosphere gave way to delicious aromas. I ordered the mahi mahi tacos and my husband ordered the pork shoulder tacos served with a pineapple habanero glaze and 10 handmade corn tortillas on a hot salt brick. The modern Latin cuisine was well worth the wait. TALIESIN WEST In the foothills sits Taliesin West, the winter home of famous American architect Frank Lloyd Wright’s. Currently, the historic landmark serves as the main campus of the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture, which boasts striking examples of organic design and construction. Taliesin West also offers tours to travelers. Wright felt a very strong connection to the desert with its sweeping lines, local desert rocks and magnificent natural lighting. I could almost feel the decadence that occurred long ago within the walls of Taliesin West; secrets that tour guides would not divulge. The Arizona desert is indeed a breathtaking experience not to miss. Whether travelers choose a busy itinerary or not, relaxation and rejuvenation are unexpected reprieves in the midst of the desert. YOUR HOROSCOPE BY LOUIS ROBERT

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) What you believe to be bad luck could actually be poor planning on your part, but your fortune will improve greatly once you get into February. Part of the problem is that you like to be your own boss and dislike others telling you what to do. Maybe you’re viewing this as interference when they’re just trying to show that they care. Let people help you.

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You’re in a fighting mood this month. Normally, you’re not the aggressor, but you sure ticked off someone and they have a bone to pick with you. Although criticisms and complaints usually just slide off your back, now you feel like punching someone in the nose. Avoid the bad karma by resisting these urges and meditate or go to the spa.

Pisces (Feb. 19-Mar. 20) Fish travel in schools because cooperation works very well, bringing success to the group. You’ll find more cooperation, teamwork and success now, so bring everyone together to focus on the common goal. What appears to be good luck is actually the smart pathway you’ve laid for yourself and followed. Friendships, love and passion are also positively highlighted now.

Aries (Mar.21-Apr. 19) Relationships prove to be still challenging. Unexpected complications leave you fuming and feeling vindictive. It’s best not to create any more negative karma with retribution, right? Patience is the solution, so try to be more of an ewe than a ram this month.

Taurus (Apr. 20-May 20) Jupiter is blessing you considerably now—hopefully, not with a pile-up of bills from holiday overspending. Try to keep everything in balance now and keep your own pace in spite of those trying to push you to move faster. “Slow-and-steady” is your power mode, but watch your temper.

Gemini (May 21-June 21) You are juggling so much right now that some may think you grew an extra arm. No wonder you live life like it’s a circus. Authority figures are grumpy and restricting your activities, but there is still plenty of time to play.

Cancer (June 22-July 22) You need to plan realistic goals now, so get your head out of the clouds and start the ball rolling. A budding romance may be the instigator of your desire for a fresh new look, but you should beautify to please yourself, not others. 82

Leo (July 23-Aug. 22) Love is all around you so there is no need to feel lonely. Travel is highlighted now and maybe, you will find a new romance while rediscovering a familiar place. Expect a lot of travel this year. Long distance romance? Mid-month you will be a bit grouchy, so remember to keep your imperious ways in check.

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) What a great start to a new year! Opportunities and prosperity are coming up like early spring flowers, giving you a lot more to smile about, so maybe you can relinquish your curmudgeonly side for a while. The only dark spot is your own lack of selfconfidence, so count your blessings and you’ll feel better soon.

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct.23) Well, you didn’t see this coming did you? Sudden new opportunities in your wealth and career sectors aren’t so unexpected if you remember that you have been working on improving these areas, right? Pat yourself on the back for achieving some goals and splurge on a new wardrobe as your reward, because yes, you do deserve it.

Scorpio (Oct. 24-Nov. 21) 2016 should prove to be ten times better than the last couple years as you reinvent yourself once again. It’s a great time to start now, so get moving, but try not to steamroll over others as they may not understand your new burst of exuberance. Spiritual concerns are highlighted, too, so it’s a great time to reconnect with that part of your life.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Work and money are your primary concerns now and there are some great planetary cycles at work to help those areas improve. A raise or promotion may even be in the works. Health is a bit vulnerable now so take care of yourself. See a health professional if necessary to get to the cause of any mysterious symptoms. VM
