Latinos have always been looking for ways to connect with their roots, and food has always been the best way to gather the community together under the heritage. These Mexican restaurants are bringing traditions, culture and authentic Mexican food to Grand Rapids. ach year from September 15 to October 15, Americans celebrate the Hispanic Heritage Month and pay tribute to the histories, cultures and contributions of Americans and immigrants whose ancestors came to the United States from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America and South America. The celebration started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week and then in 1988 was expanded to cover a 30-day period. It begins in the middle of the month, as opposed to the end, because the 15th marks the independence days of five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Mexico, Chile, and Belize follow shortly after, on the 16th, 18th and 21st respectively. Hispanic Heritage Month honors the generations of Hispanic-Americans who have positively influenced and enriched American society. It particularly celebrates arts and culture, and of course, Hispanic gastronomy. With Hispanics making up more than a quarter of the U.S. population today—and growing fast—experts say this change is dramatically flavoring the American culinary experience. Traditional Hispanic foods have been making their way into American diets for years, and it is now common for Americans to include nachos, enchiladas, chorizos or queso fresco in their day-to-day meals. Most Hispanic cuisine has blended into mainstream American culture, creating many variations of Hispanic-inspired dishes such as the well-known Tex-Mex: a fusion of Mexican and American cuisine, primarily as a result of Tejano culture. The most notable difference between Tex-Mex and original Mexican cuisine lies in cooking methods and ingredients used. In this matter, Grand Rapids and many of its Mexican restaurants are making a difference by offering what is known as authentic and traditional Mexican cuisine. These small businesses are thriving by bringing the original gastronomy, ranging from pre-Hispanic food to unique tamales from Veracruz, from their home regions in Mexico to Michigan. Here we have a list of four Mexican restaurants in Grand Rapids that are embracing our Hispanic heritage:

Mexo - 118 Fulton Street East, Grand Rapids 49503 Mexo was born out of Chef Oscar Moreno’s interest to teach other cultures what authentic Mexican food is. Oscar is originally from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, studied culinary arts and, from an early age, worked for restaurants involved in the hospitality and tourism industry. After working for several years in different restaurants in Michigan, 14 months ago he decided to open Mexo, whose slogan is “Pre-Hispanic Modern Mexican.” “Mexo is a fusion of ancestral Mexico’s legacy and its culture after the Spaniards’ arrival. Our menu is built around a pre-Hispanic diet. Our ancestors had a very healthy diet based on herbs and saw food as medicine. They had a lot of respect for agriculture and ingredients,” says Chef Oscar Moreno.

Mexo aims to show people what real preHispanic Mexican food is all about. Its menu is based on Mexican pre-Hispanic ingredients such as nixtamal (a mixture of maize and lime), and it offers unique dishes such as Caldo de Piedra (usually a soup of fish cooked with vegetables and herbs in stones) or Cochinita Pibil (marinated pork in strongly acidic citrus juice, seasoned with annatto seed which imparts a vivid burnt orange color, and roasting the pork wrapped in banana leaf). It features a Prehispanic Chef Dinner Series, in which chef Oscar Moreno provides a night of great food and drinks: a delicious and unique five-course menu for people to enjoy and learn about the prehispanic food and culture.
Tamales Mary 1253 Burton St SW, Wyoming Owner Mary Alvarez moved to the United States in 1998 when she was 17. She started working in restaurants cooking, what she knew best back home in Colipa, Veracruz. After working for a while at Restaurants, she acquired a Tacos el Cuñado franchise and years later, decided it was time to open a second restaurant,based on one of her other talents: doing the best tamales from Veracruz Mexico. Three years ago she and her husband Humberto Alvarez opened Tamales Mary offering seven different types of Tamales; now they are running up to 15 varieties, which are so unique that no other restaurant in Grand Rapids can compete. “We have chicken, beef, pork, bell peppers with cheese, black beans with fresco cheese. There are even dessert flavors like pineapple, strawberry, sweet corn, and choco-

late on special occasions. Also, vegetarian options are available,” she explains. At Tamales Mary, they also have delicious Veracruz-style food. Taco bar is available on Tuesday and Tamales buffet on Wednesday. And if you are around downtown Grand Rapids most probably you will bump into Tamales Mary food cart, with unique Tamales and combos.
El Globo Restaurant 2019 S Division, Grand Rapids “The restaurant started as a small Mexican snack stall in November 2004 inside Megamall,” says Evangelina Abundis, owner of the Globo Restaurant, who, alongside her husband Oswaldo Cordova, started this business that has been growing little by little, as they say, with a lot of work and dedication. Thanks to the increase in sales and customers, in September 2016, they moved to a spacious location where they are currently located. The idea of opening the restaurant came from their need to find the flavor of typical food of Jalisco, Mexico, where they come from. “In Grand Rapids, there was not a restaurant with the tapatio [a nickname for Guadalajarans] flavor to which we were used, and thanks to El Globo, we can feel like in a “Rinconcito de Guadalajara” in this beautiful City of Grand Rapids, enjoying traditional food from our homeland,” says Evangelina. At the Globo Restaurant, you will find traditional cakes, posole, leg slices, sopes, goat birria (a spicy stew), and many more dishes with Jalisco flavor and heritage. Additionally, they have tacos for $1 on Wednesdays—who can top that?

El Toro Bravo 4300 Clyde Park Ave. SW. Sisters Salvia and Mariaelena Cano come from the state of Durango, Mexico. Salvia worked for a long time in restaurants, and as many Latinos, she wanted to have a Mexican restaurant, not a typical but a fast food restaurant that had a drive-thru, with a similar operation structure as McDonald’s. El Toro Bravo was born in a garage in a house cooking typical Durango food on a wood stove, selling tortillas, menudo broth, huaraches, and gorditas. In a short time, customers recognized the excellent service and good food, and the sisters decided to open a restaurant. They started at a small location in 2017 and later moved to a larger building. “I always had the vision of having a restaurant. It’s a dream come true for me, and I never thought I could get it. After the small location, God gave us the opportunity to get a new building where there was a Wendy’s, and so I could fulfill my dream of having a fast-food restaurant of authentic Mexican food,” explains Salvia. Toro Bravo’s specialty is gorditas, with more than 12 different stews. Food is fresh and ready to serve. In addition, they sell burritos, quesadillas, menudo, enchiladas, camperos (simple arrangements of basic foods for campers) and huaraches (not the sandals, but meat and vegetables folded inside an oblong shaped dough). Los latinos siempre han estado buscando formas de conectarse con sus raíces, y la comida siempre ha sido la mejor manera de reunir a la comunidad bajo el mismo patrimonio. Estos restaurantes mexicanos están devolviendo tradiciones, cultura y auténtica comida mexicana a Grand Rapids. ada año, del 15 de septiembre al 15 de octubre, los estadounidenses celebran el Mes de la Herencia Hispana y rinden homenaje a las historias, culturas y contribuciones de estadounidenses e inmigrantes cuyos antepasados llegaron a los Estados Unidos desde España, México, el Caribe, América Central y América del Sur. La celebración comenzó en 1968 como la Semana de la Herencia Hispana y luego en 1988 se expandió para cubrir un período de 30 días. Comienza a mediados de mes, en oposición al final, porque el día 15 marca los días de independencia de cinco países latinoamericanos: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras y Nicaragua. ningún otro restaurante en Grand Rapids puede competir. “Tenemos pollo, carne de res, cerdo, pimientos con queso, frijoles negros con queso fresco. Incluso hay sabores de postres como piña, fresa, maíz dulce y chocolate en ocasiones especiales. Además, hay opciones vegetarianas disponibles”, explica. En Tamales Mary, también tienen deliciosa comida al estilo de Veracruz. El bar de tacos está disponible los martes y el buffet de Tamales los miércoles. Y si estás cerca del centro de Grand Rapids, lo más probable es que te encuentres con el carrito de comida de Tamales Mary, con Tamales y combos únicos.
El Globo Restaurant 2019 S DIVISION, GRAND RAPIDS “El restaurante empezó como un pequeño puesto de antojitos mexicanos en noviembre de 2004 dentro de Megamall” comenta Evangelina Abundis, dueña del Globo Restaurant, quien con su esposo Oswaldo Cordova, empezaron este negocio que ha venido creciendo poco a poco, como ellos dicen, con mucho trabajo y dedicación. Gracias a la aceptación de sus clientes y a las buenas ventas, en Septiembre del 2016 se mudaron a la ubicación espaciosa donde se encuentran actualmente. La idea de abrir el restaurante nació de la necesidad de encontrar el sabor en la comida típica de Jalisco, México, de donde Evangelina es originaria. “En Grand Rapids, no había un restaurante con el Sabor Tapatío al cual estábamos acostumbrados, y gracias a esto nosotros podemos ahora sentirnos como en un “Rinconcito de Guadalajara” en esta hermosa ciudad de Grand Rapids, con comida tradicional de nuestra tierra”, comenta Evangelina.

Salvia trabajó mucho tiempo en restaurantes y como muchos latinos querían tener un restaurante mexicano, pero de comida rápida, que tuviera drive-thru, y tener una estructura de operación como McDonald’s. El Toro Bravo nació en un garaje de una casa cocinando comida típica de Durango en una estufa de leña, vendiendo tortillas, caldo de menudo, guaraches y gorditas. En poco tiempo, los clientes reconocieron un excelente servicio y buena comida y decidieron abrir un restaurante. Comenzaron en un lugar pequeño en 2017 y luego se mudaron a un edificio más grande. “Siempre tuve la ilusión de tener un restaurante, es un sueño hecho realidad para mi, nunca creí que lo pudiera conseguir. Después del local pequeño, Dios nos dio la oportunidad de conseguir un nuevo local donde existía un Wendy’s y así pude cumplir mi sueño de tener un restaurante de comida rápida, pero de autentica comida mexicana”, explica Salvia. La especialidad del Toro Bravo son las gorditas, con más de 12 guisados diferentes. Esta comida es fresca, se hace al instante. How to Buy a
Home after Bankruptcy By MCC
With the right strategy you can qualify for a mortgage to buy a home just a few years after filing for bankruptcy. Just follow these steps. he negative credit impact of bankruptcy stays with you for years after the date of final discharge – up to ten years, to be specific. But that doesn’t mean that you have to put your life on hold for the next decade. In fact, with the right strategy you can even qualify for one of the toughest types of financing to get approved for… a mortgage. So you can get a new home that meets your needs and works for your budget, too. The information below can help you craft the right strategy to get your credit and outlook ready for mortgage approval. Step 1: Set a date The first step to get ready for a mortgage after bankruptcy is to determine exactly how soon you want to buy. Ideally, you need about one to two years to build credit and prepare your finances for loan approval. Given new lending standards required following the real estate market collapse in 2009, you may find it downright impossible to qualify if you don’t give yourself that time and do the work described below. That being said, you may have a need to move sooner. If the bankruptcy filing put an automatic stay on the foreclosure of your home, you may need to sell the property quickly and downsize. In this case, instead of immediately pursuing a new mortgage, the best option may be to find a rental property for a few years so you can really get ready to buy. Step 2: Review & repair your credit Following severe financial distress that leads to bankruptcy, your credit profile may contain a large number of negative items – both correct and incorrect. Completing a bankruptcy should discharge the remaining balances on your debts, balances should be zeroed out and collection accounts should be closed. With that in mind, you need to review your credit report to make sure everything has been

updated correctly following the completion of your filing. If you find items that you think are outdated or need to be removed, then you should consider going through the credit repair process. Step 3: Take steps to build credit You can offset negative information in your credit report that can drag down your credit score by taking positive actions for your credit. This means that following bankruptcy, you can take steps to rebuild your credit long before the bankruptcy penalty expires and the item gets removed from your profile. The first step to rebuilding credit is usually to get a secured credit card. This allows you to get credit with a deposit, so your credit score isn’t really a factor to qualify. Then you make charges strategically and manage the debt closely. Every positive payment you make helps you build credit. You should also make an effort to maintain the balance at no more than 20% of the total credit line you have available. In addition, make sure to keep up with payments on any other debts that you have. This includes student loan debt that doesn’t get discharged during bankruptcy, as well as the payment for any small personal loans you may wish to take out to help you rebuild your credit. Then you can move on to the steps that follow while you work to build your credit Step 4: Set a budget & start saving Financial stability will be key to getting from bankruptcy completion to mortgage approval, so you need to build a formalized budget if you want to be successful. And luckily, budgeting isn’t as much of a hassle as you might think. Find a budgeting platform that makes it as easy as possible to build a budget. Once you have your accounts entered and expenses categorized – which should take less than an hour even if you get really detailed – you can see how much free cash flow you have available to save. Remember that you need as much money as possible for a down payment, so the more you can save each month for the next 1224 months, the better.
Step 5: Maximize your down payment Speaking of down payment, the more money you have for a down payment, the easier it usually is to qualify for the mortgage you want. Ideally, you want at least 20% of the purchase price of the home. This will allow you to qualify for a traditional mortgage, instead of depending on riskier options like ARMs. Of course, bear in mind that you may be able to qualify for an FHA-loan for as little as 3% down. But your goal should be to hit the 20% mark in order to make it easier to qualify. Step 6: The right home, the right price Allow Steps 1-5 to work. You should be building credit by making strategic purchases and managing your debt closely. You should also be moving all free cash flow into savings to maximize your down payment. The more aggressive you are at doing these two things, the faster you can usually get to where you need to be. After about 12 months of hard work, you can start the process of buying a home. But that doesn’t mean you get an agent as start making offers. You need to take a lot of time to define what you need in a home, where you want to live, and how much home your can afford. And make sure the amenities and home features you think you need are really things you can’t do without. Learning to recognize three of the more common types of sun damage may compel people visit their physicians and take potentially life-saving steps to prevent future damage. It's not always easy to recognize signs of sun damage when spending time outdoors in the summer, especially for people who lay out in the sun hoping to get a tan. Such damage may be overlooked or more evident in the fall, when people begin spending more time indoors. But sun-damaged skin should not be taken lightly. In fact, the Skin Cancer Foundation notes that the vast majority of melanomas, the most dangerous form of skin cancer, are caused by the sun. The SCF even notes that one study from researchers in the United Kingdom found that 86 percent of melanomas

can be attributed to exposure to the ultraviolet, or UV, radiation from the sun. Sun-damaged skin will not necessarily lead to skin cancer. However, the American Academy of Dermatology notes that sun damage can lead to skin cancer. Going outdoors without adequate protection makes skin vulnerable to sun-related damage. Learning to recognize three of the more common types of sun damage may compel people visit their physicians and take potentially life-saving steps to prevent future damage. 1. Wrinkles Wrinkles aren't always a byproduct of aging. While the Mayo Clinic notes that skin becomes less elastic and more fragile as it ages, increasing the likelihood that wrinkles will develop, wrinkles also can indicate sun-damaged skin. 2. Age spots According to the AAD, age spots, which are flat brown, gray or black spots on the skin, appear on areas of the body that are most often
exposed to the sun, including the face and hands. The AAD notes that what looks like an age spot could actually be skin cancer. If any such spots are detected, men and women should see a board-certified dermatologist for a through skin exam. 3. Loose skin Loose skin is sometimes a byproduct of aging, but it also can be indicative of sun damage. Various products claim to treat loose skin, but the AAD notes that facelift-like results likely won't come from any product sold in a jar. For example, the AAD says results from skin-firming creams will be subtle at best. Products that contain a retinoid like retinol, which can help the body make more collagen, might produce minor results. Sun-related skin damage can affect peoples' appearance and even suggest the presence of something more serious, such as skin cancer. amily vacations provide opportunities for parents and their children to unwind and make memories that last a lifetime. Such excursions can be made even more memorable when taking the family pet. Traveling with animals in tow is not as simple as beckoning the family pet to the car when it’s time to hit the open road. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals notes that travel can be stressful for both pet owners and their pets. To help ease that stress and ensure all members of the family, including those covered in fur, have a great a time on vacation, the ASPCA offers the following tips to pet owners taking their animals on road trips. • Check and update your pet’s collar. Even if pets are microchipped, it’s important to make sure they wear collars imprinted with their owners’ names, phone numbers, email addresses and any additional relevant contact information. Make sure the phone numbers listed on pets’ collars are the numbers where you

can be reached while on vacation and not just landline home phone numbers. • Prepare your pet. In the weeks before the trip, pet owners should start to prepare their pets for the trip by taking them on short drives. Lengthen each of these mini trips so you can build up a travel tolerance in your pet and acquaint the animal with car travel before vacation begins. • Purchase appropriate travel gear. Some pet owners cannot imagine making long road trips with their pets in crates. But crating pets during road trips is entirely possible without making pets uncomfortable. The ASPCA advises purchasing crates that are large enough to allow pets to stand, sit, lie down and turn around. It’s also important to secure the crate so it does not slide around in case of sudden stops or when driving on curvy roads. Pet owners who don’t want to put their pets in crates should keep pets harnessed in the back seat at all times, never letting the animal hang its head out the window while the car is in motion. • Pack some travel items. Human beings
tend to bring snacks and beverages along on road trips, and such items are necessary for pets, too. Pack water, food and some snacks for pets, but never feed them in a moving car. Take some time to feed pets at rest stops. The ASPCA advises feeding pets a light meal three to four hours before beginning the trip and serving pets only bottled water to reduce the risk of stomach problems. In addition to food and water, pack some toys to keep pets occupied during the trip. Such toys can also calm animals’ anxiety by providing them with something familiar. • Do not leave pets alone in the car. Leaving pets alone in a car is unsafe no matter what the temperature is outside. Pets are susceptible to heatstroke when left in hot cars and can freeze to death when left in cars during winter. When planning your road trip, confirm that any hotels you plan to stay in accept pets. Family vacations may not be complete without the family pets joining in the fun. Remarkable road trips are made more so by the company shared along the way and the scenic and historical roadways traversed to reach a destination. Travelers embarking on road trips in Canada or the United States should consider including some of the following roadways in their travel plans. • Haines Highway: If your adventures take you through Alaska, there is plenty of legendary scenery to take in. The backdrop along the Haines Highway is sensational, but this stretch of roadway also offers views of the largest congregations of bald eagles in the world. It has been dubbed “The Valley of the Eagles.” • Route 66: Now known as “Historic Route 66,” this famed road stretches from Los Angeles to Chicago, cutting a path through a vast portion of America’s heartland. ving along 66 is an adventure in American history and that the road embodies the best of the United States. • Pacific Coast Highway: While not the fastest way to travel, this winding road that hugs the California coast owes its popularity to stunning views of the Pacific Ocean.
