Sea Prudente, Cuide Su Carro...

Help Your Car Weather The Storm

ow is a good time to ready your vehicle in preparation for rough weather conditions ahead. “Vehicle service is always more convenient when you do it on your own schedule. An investment of an hour or so to have your vehicle checked will help make sure it can weather the storm when arctic temperatures strike again,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. Because preventative maintenance helps avoid the hassle and cost of an emergency breakdown, the Car Care Council recommends the following steps: • Check the battery and charging system for optimum performance. Cold weather is hard on batteries. • Check the antifreeze. As a general rule of thumb, clean, flush and put new antifreeze in the cooling system every two years. • Check that heaters, defrosters and wipers work properly. Consider winter wiper blades and use cold weather washer fluid. As a general rule, wiper blades should be replaced every six months. • Check the tire tread depth and tire pressure. If snow and ice are a problem where you plan on driving, consider special tires designed to grip slick roads. During winter, tire pressure should be checked weekly. • Check the oil and filter and be diligent about changing them at recommended intervals. Dirty oil
can spell trouble in winter. Consider changing to “winter weight” oil if you drive in cold places. Have your technician check the fuel, air and transmission filters at the same time. • Check engine performance. Winter magnifies existing problems such as hard starts, sluggish performance and rough idling. • Check the brakes. The braking system is the vehicle’s most important safety item. • Check the exhaust system for carbon monoxide leaks, which can be especially dangerous during cold weather driving when windows are closed. • Check to see that exterior and interior lights work and headlights are properly aimed. During winter, drivers should keep their vehicle’s gas tank at least half full to decrease the chances of moisture forming in the gas lines and possibly freezing. Motorists should also check the tire pressure of the spare in the trunk and stock an emergency kit with an ice scraper and snow brush, jumper cables, flashlight, blanket, extra clothes, bottled water, dry food snacks and any needed medication. The Car Care Council is the source of information for the “Be Car Care Aware” consumer education campaign promoting the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair to consumers. ¿Cómo prepararse para la temporada de gripe?
C

How to Prepare for Flu Season
T

he arrival of winter and changes in temperature will begin to affect the defense of our immune system, resulting in the arrival of the most common illness of all: the flu. This year, in order to help prepare you for the flu season, we talked to experts at Spectrum Health Community, where the community can find different health programs and services. When we asked these experts what we can do to prevent the flu, they advise us the following: • Flu Shot: It's the most important thing anyone can do during the winter season. Most health insurances cover it for free, otherwise if you do not have insurance, you can consult in your employer, since many offer it to their employees for free. In addition, the vast majority of Michigan health departments offer free flu shots. • Inform yourself: Many people believe that the flu causes nausea, vomiting or stomach problems. The reality is that the flu causes fever, aches throughout the body and trouble breathing or coughing. In some cases, it can also appear in those who have nasal congestion problems. If you have any of these symptoms, you should go to a physician right away. • Wash your hands often. • Avoid touching your face regularly • Avoid contact with people who are sick or have the flu. • If you already have the flu, stay home; this way whatever advice/treatment your physician prescribed will be more effective, and will prevent other people from getting sick. The people who most need to protect themselves from the flu are the elderly, young children and pregnant women. Spectrum Health recommends that once some of these flurelated symptoms are detected, you should immediately consult with a physician who can recommend the appropriate treatment. One popular and often used medication is called "Tamiflu," which is thought to prevent the appearance of the flu and can help with a fast recovery. Even so, its use should be based on advice from medical experts who will recommend the right time to start treatment, otherwise its use may not have the desired positive effect. Now that you know a little more about the symptoms and how to prevent the flu, take care of your health. If you need medical help or have more questions, do not hesitate to consult Spectrum Health Community experts who will be able to advise you and help you prevent weather-related illnesses in Michigan. Resoluciones de Año Nuevo...
S
Dr. James P. Smith
Deputy Division Director at FDA
New Year's Resolution...
“This year, I’m going to lose some weight” Beware of Products Promising Miracle Weight Loss
f you find yourself making this common New Year’s resolution, know this: many so-called “miracle” weight loss supplements and foods (including teas and coffees) don’t live up to their claims. Worse, they can cause serious harm, say FDA regulators. The agency has found hundreds of products that are marketed as dietary supplements but actually contain hidden active ingredients (components that make a medicine effective against a specific illness) contained in prescription drugs, unsafe ingredients that were in drugs that have been removed from the market, or compounds that have not been adequately studied in humans. “When the product contains a drug or other ingredient which is not listed as an ingredient we become especially concerned about the safety of the product,” says James P. Smith, M.D., an acting deputy director in FDA’s Office of Drug Evaluation. Tainted Products For example, FDA has found weight-loss products tainted with the prescription drug ingredient sibutramine. This ingredient was in an FDA-approved drug called Meridia, which was removed from the market in October 2010 because it caused heart problems and strokes. “We’ve also found weight-loss products marketed as supplements that contain dangerous concoctions of hidden ingredients including active ingredients contained in
approved seizure medications, blood pressure medications, and antidepressants,” says Jason Humbert, a senior regulatory manager at FDA. Most recently, FDA has found a number of products marketed as dietary supplements containing fluoxetine, the active ingredient found in Prozac, a prescription drug marketed for the treatment of depression and other conditions. Another product contained triamterene, a powerful diuretic (sometimes known as “water pills”) that can have serious side-effects and should only be used under the supervision of a health care professional. Many of these tainted products are imported, sold online, and heavily promoted on social media sites. Some can also be found on store shelves. And if you’re about to take what you think of as “natural” dietary supplements, such as bee pollen or Garcinia cambogia, you should be aware that FDA has found some of these products also contain hidden active ingredients contained in prescription drugs. “The only natural way to lose weight is to burn more calories than you take in,” says James P. Smith, M.D. That means a combination of healthful eating and physical activity. Moreover, if you are going to embark on any type of weight control campaign, you should talk to your health care professional about it first, Smith says.
Know the Warning Signs Look for potential warning signs of tainted products, such as: • Promises of a quick fix, for example, “lose 10 pounds in one week.” • Use of the words “guaranteed” or “scientific breakthrough.” • Products marketed in a foreign language. • Products marketed through mass e-mails. • Products marketed as herbal alternatives to an FDA-approved drug or as having effects similar to prescription drugs.
