Grand Rapids Selected as one of the best cities to live in the country

.S. News & World Report just released it annual list of the “100 Best Places to Live in the USA,” and included in the list’s top 20 is a city located in West Michigan: Grand Rapids! According to the report, Grand Rapids is a city that stands out for its labor market, its access to affordable housing for its residents, its variety of recreational activities organized monthly and, of course, access to numerous outdoor parks. The cost of living in Grand Rapids is much lower than other similarly-sized cities in the United States, allowing its economy to provide families access to better housing, while allowing them the opportunity of spending more time enjoying the area’s recreational activities. Neighborhood associations in Grand Rapids are very active and innovative, with many of them creating different commu-

nity events complete with music, food and art, encouraging neighbors get to know each other and in doing so creating a strong neighborhood family and community. Although Grand Rapids is the second largest metropolitan area in Michigan, the city still maintains the warmth and harmony of a small city, which distinguishes it from other cities in the county in receiving this distinction.. Grand Rapids enjoys a robust craft beer industry, which paved the way for its recognition and designation as “Beer City, USA.” Each year, the city celebrates “Beer Month,” slated for February 15 to March 15, 2017. Over 40 breweries participate, offering select craft brews, brewery tours, sharing how how their beers are created (without divulging their secrets, of course) and giving the community to vote for their

favorite beer. During this month, visitors from out of town are treated to a unique stay in one of the many downtown hotels and an organized experience intended to have them enjoy Beer City, USA in a unique and different way. Visitors to Grand Rapids are encouraged to request the special Beer City, USA map so they do not miss out on the craft craft beer experience. Grand Rapids deserves the “U.S. News & World Report” designation: it offers activities for all ages, and overall a metropolitan city that maintains a spirit of community, brotherhood and closeness. The Grand Rapids community invites the rest of the country to visit and see firsthand why it has been chosen as one of the top 20 cities to live in the United States. Congratulations to the entire community - we should be proud!

SALUD

¿Hormigueo en los pies y las manos?

S

I

Tingling in the feet and hands?

It can be a symptom of any of these four diseases

f you are one of those individuals who usually crosses their legs when they are sitting, prefers to sit over one foot or are accustomed to having someone sit on your lap for long periods of time, you have probably experienced the sensation of the "sleeping foot." This sensation of the foot falling asleep consists of that part of your body is not reacting when you try to move it, there is no “feeling” in it, but within a few seconds of trying to move it - or, “wake it up” - you start to feel a tickle and almost immediately an "invasion" of ants that run through that part.

We’ve all been there, right? This sensation is logical and it is caused by reduction of the circulation of the blood flow, to your foot (in the case above). However when this sensation of tingling in your hands or feet is continuous and without some obstruction of circulation, like when crossing your legs or sitting on your foot, you should pay special attention to it since it can be a symptom of some something serious, including one of many diseases. Below are some diseases/ailments whose symptoms include those we just described:

Diabetic neuropathy This affects people with diabetes and is caused by the nerves in the body, due to decreased blood flow and a high level of sugar. The symptoms tingling sensation, and a “burning” or deep pain both in the toes and feet themselves. If this is not taken care of in time, it can also affect the fingers and hands. Failure to pay attention to and take care of this problem can lead to loss of sensation in your hands and feet, and left unable to feel cuts, pickets or high and low temperatures.

Buerger's disease Symptoms consists of inflammation and swelling in the blood vessels of the feet and hands, which become inflamed and cause reduced blood flow, contributing to the obstruction of the vessels. This is also known as obliterating thromboangitis and can appear after age 35. It can cause open sores on the toes or hands; inflamed veins, pain in the hands and feet or in the legs and arms; tingling or pallor in the toes or hands in very cold environments, as well as damage to tissues if not treated and/or controlled in time (i.e., gangrene).

Hypoaesthesia This condition is the result usually of nerve-related origin, consists of the decrease of the thermal sensitivity (not perceiving the very high or very low temperatures), pain (not feeling pain when pricking with something sharp, opening the skin) or the deep sensitivity. Hypoaesthesia may sometimes appear as a symptom of diabetes or plaque sclerosis. Treatment depends on its origin, as there are cases in which it is irreversible, and in fact may consist of dietary supplements, physical and electrical therapy.

Multiple sclerosis This is an autoimmune disease (when the immune system attacks and mistakenly destroys healthy body tissue) which affects the brain and spinal cord (central nervous system). It affects women more often than men. Although it can appear at any stage of life, it has been diagnosed more consistently between the ages of 20 and 40. Symptoms may include and affect: muscular (loss of balance, numbness, muscle spasms), bladder and bowel movements (constipation, leakage of feces, difficulty urinating), ocular (double vision, discomfort in the eyes, loss of vision), numbness, tingling or pain, among others. The reasons for the aforementioned conditions can be diverse: a nerve injury, nerves/stress, lack of vitamin B12, consumption of alcoholic beverages, tobacco (smoked or chewed), abnormal levels of calcium, potassium or sodium, and even the bite of some animal or insect (ticks, mites and spiders). Most importantly, always be aware of any abnormalities in your body so you can do something on time and live a healthier, longer life.

EAT R IG HT

Ensalada Panzanella

INGREDIENTES:

• • • • • • • • • • • •

Porciones: 8 a 10

14 | Marzo 2017 | Vive Michigan

Find Better Balance for Family Meals

Panzanella Salad Last year, Americans were only meeting the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s MyPlate recommendations for vegetables, fruit, protein, dairy and grain consumption one week out of the entire year. While many families try to cook nutritious meals at home, a balanced plate can be hard to achieve. Educational programs, such as Nestlé’s Balance Your Plate, make it simple to create delicious and balanced meals by pairing frozen prepared meals and pizzas with made-from-scratch side dishes, which makes meeting the dietary guidelines a more attainable goal.

I N G R E D I E N T S:

• • • •

Serves: 8 - 10

1 whole wheat baguette, cut into 1-inch cubes 4 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, divided 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard

• • • • • • • •

3 tablespoons red wine vinegar salt, to taste pepper, to taste 1 cup grape tomatoes, halved 1 hothouse cucumber, diced 3 assorted bell peppers, diced 1/2 red onion, diced 10 sprigs basil leaves, julienned

D I R E CT I O N S: Heat oven to 350 F. On baking sheet, spread bread in single layer and drizzle with 1 tablespoon olive oil. Bake 20 minutes, or until golden brown. Remove and set aside. In bowl, whisk together garlic, mustard, vinegar, salt and pepper with remaining olive oil to make vinaigrette. In large bowl, toss ingredients together, making sure to coat all ingredients with vinaigrette. Serve immediately.

5 Ways to Reach (and Maintain!) a Healthy Weight

D

By Mary L. Gavin, MD

iets aren't the way to go when it comes to losing weight. That's because they create temporary eating patterns and, therefore, temporary results. Most dieters gain back any lost weight when they go back to their old eating habits. So what's the best way to drop excess weight? Create a new normal! Weight loss is most likely to be successful when people change their habits, replacing old, unhealthy ones with new, healthy behaviors. Here are 5 ways to make that happen: Exercise. Regular physical activity burns calories and builds muscle both of which help you look and feel good and keep weight off. Walking the family dog, cycling to school, and doing other things that increase your daily level of activity can all make a difference. If you want to burn more calories, increase the intensity of your workout and add some strength exercises to build muscle. The more muscle you have, the more calories you burn, even when you aren't exercising.

Reduce screen time. People who spend a lot of time in front of screens are more likely to be overweight. Set reasonable limits on the amount of time you spend watching TV, playing video games, and using computers, phones, and tablets not related to school work. Be sure to set aside enough time to exercise every day and get enough sleep.

Watch out for portion distortion. Big portions pile on extra calories that cause weight gain. Sugary beverages, such as sodas, juice drinks, and sports drinks, are empty calories that also contribute to obesity. So choose smaller portions (or share restaurant portions) and go for water or low-fat milk instead of soda.

Eat 5 servings of fruits and veggies a day. Fruits and veggies are about more than just vitamins and minerals. They're also packed with fiber, which means they fill you up. And when you fill up on fruits and veggies, you're less likely to overeat.

Don't skip breakfast. Breakfast kickstarts your metabolism, burning calories from the get-go and giving you energy to do more during the day. People who skip breakfast often feel so hungry that they eat more later on. So they get more calories than they would have if they ate breakfast. In fact, people who skip breakfast tend to have higher BMIs than people who eat breakfast. Vive Michigan | March 2017 | 19
