HKDA Lifetime Honorary Award Dr. Kan Tai Keung

inspiring design for half a century The Hong Kong Designers Association (HKDA) celebrates its 45th anniversary and the 40th year of the establishment of Global Design Awards (GDA) this year. In this very special year, the Association decided to present the HKDA Lifetime Honorary Award to a Hong Kong designer. The award goes to Dr. Kan Tai Keung, whose reputation is unshakable in design and recognised by the general public. He not only contributes greatly to the development of design by constantly producing high-quality works, but he also pushes the industry forward by implementing a business model to elevate the profession and promotes the development of design education. Kan was born in 1942 in Panyu, Guangdong. He moved to Hong Kong in the 1950s and started his career as a tailor. Later he completed a design course and has since become a professional designer. Throughout the years, Kan has won countless awards and honours, including the Silver Bauhinia Star from Hong Kong SAR and Doctor of Design honoris causa from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. The HKDA Lifetime Honorary Award pays tribute to a Hong Kong designer whose contribution has been continuously outstanding and Kan is a well-deserved first recipient of the award.

Hannes Unt started his career in design when he was still in school back in his home country Estonia. His first foreign client was from Hong Kong, where he also founded his own company later in 2010. Most of Unt’s works fall into the area of branding for companies. The design practice of Unt has a strong emphasis on the designer’s relationship with clients. In fact, he has been fairly selective about his clients, and he feels lucky and humble for such luxury, which is made possible only because the business model of a very small in-house but collaborative team has been maintained at his practice. A close working relationship with the clients is no exception in the case of the award-winning packaging design for Memorieslab. U n t h a d t h e p l e a s u re o f w o r k i n g w i t h t w o o f t h e Memorieslab founders during the design process. He believes that direct communication with the people who are decision makers enhances the speed, efficiency and reward of work for both sides.

The services provided by Memorieslab combine modern technology with manual printing, details of the company’s works are therefore brought into the packaging design to build the company’s brand identity. For instance, the swirling patterns are taken from the mixing of chemicals in the darkroom. Unt regards the world of photography and the darkroom as the inspirations behind the design. It has been the first time Unt took part in GDA. As their scope of work increasingly inclined towards mainland China and the Asia region, he thinks it is important to succeed in winning some awards to get attention. Awards to a large extent is important also for networking, especially when working with talents who are looking for agencies that are doing excellent work. GDA is definitely a good platform to connect more with the talents. Yet, at the same time, judges of GDA this year are strong juries and this appeals to Unt. He always looks at those behind a competition, who give the Awards a strong presence.

Primarily Unt would like to thank his client, Memorieslab, such a great client and so trusting that otherwise none of these could have happened. Memorieslab is really changing the course of photographic printing and he believes their name will be written in history for years. They are doing something truly great that only a minority of people would understand. They are preserving the technology of how traditional photo prints are made. These are skills gradually dying in the world.

bridging cultural differences

The most different thing is, I’m in a different part of the world. I think they (different awards) are similar in a sense that, they are both looking for the best in each of the categories. This show is a good example of really broad group of categories and a broad range of work. I was impressed by the breath of entrance. Probably the most different thing from my perspective is the amount of colour and attention to textures and more tactile qualities that we wouldn’t, maybe haven’t aware of this much. Especially the books, absolutely… I just want to take them all home. They are beautiful. From that perspective I think it’s a little different.

It’s great to meet people you’ve never met and designers from other countries. We have someone from the US, Hong Kong, China, Japan. That brings a slightly different perspective, I think that helps to get a good balance. I can’t read Chinese, so sometimes it’s hard to know the intent of the pieces. So I was asking the woman who was helping me, “What does the headline say, what is the point of the piece?” I can look at it aesthetically without the language. I was curious if people that can read Chinese were looking at the work differently than I was. Because they have more understanding of the words. Words are part of design... We have actually come to more agreement than imagined, given that we are from different backgrounds. It was the most enjoyable part for me to have the debates.

overall comment on the entries The books were absolutely beautiful, especially the winners of course. First of all, the language… the beautiful way of putting the photography and lettering; the quality of the paper and the binding. It’s just spectacular! I like the posters, also. Some of the non-commercial posters were again, just works of art, almost. What disappointed me was probably the visual identity, that’s where I have my expertise back in the United States. I felt it was a bit weak within a broad programme with a lot of different elements from print to digital to work spaces. They felt a little small. But overall there were even some great entries in that category.

attention to textures and more tactile qualities that we wouldn’t, maybe haven’t aware of this much.”
