Bucuresti What Where When Magazine is printed on paper originated from sustainable managed forests.
A chilly beginning of autumn came over Bucharest in the second week of October. In half a day, we went from summer to winter, from a warm and friendly sun to a harsh, bleak wind, accompanied by cold rain as well. It is well known that frost has purifying virtues, but some of us shudder even at the thought that winter is coming. A unique event in the history of Romania also happened on that very day: for the first time since the fall of Communism, a government was discharged through the democratic procedure of a censure motion. 254 members of the Parliament voted against the government, while 176 voted in its defense. Simplifying things, the Romanian political scene currently looks as follows: the majority party is the Democratic Liberal Party (PDL), which claims to be a center-right party. The two major parties in the parliamentary opposition are the Democratic Social Party (PSD - left) and the National Liberal Party (PNL - moderate right). The former was part of the governing coalition with the PDL until October 1st, when it left its previous ally and joined the opposition. The censure motion that removed the PDL government, which was led by prime-minister Emil Boc, from power was initiated by the liberals and was supported by the social-democrats. The opposition accused the government of incompetence, claiming the government was acting “against” Romania’s interest. Who will lead the new government and what will be its structure - these are the questions running through everyone’s minds. The PDL would like the government to be led by the financial expert Lucian Croitoru, but the name found on the tip of everyone’s tongue and the person enjoying wide popular support among all opposition parties is Klaus Johannis, the current mayor of Sibiu. As a result of the consultations that have been taking place in Cotroceni Palace, president Traian Basescu accepted the former, Lucian Croitoru. The new primeminister and the government he forms will be subject to a vote by the Parliament. In less than 45 days, i.e. by November 28th, Romania must have a governing team. All this while we have presidential elections scheduled on November 22nd! Things are obviously taking a complicated turn. The opposition’s agreement on the future prime-minister – the PSD is supporting Johannis, the candidate proposed by the PNL - suggests a potential alliance between the two parties for the presidential elections as well. If a run-off election is needed, as indicated by current polls, it would take place on December 6th. At that point president Basescu, so far the favorite in the race, would face competition from a candidate supported by both the liberals and the social-democrats, without even considering the support which could come from smaller parties. Basescu could lose the presidential seat in the run-off elections, after just having lost a loyal prime-minister, who, together with all his ministers, was part of Basescu’s party and base of power. November will bring us, if not a new president, then certainly a new government.

NEWS, EVENTS & ATTRACTIONS Are you ready to go out to the skating rink? Or maybe are you going to ski, at least for the weekend, if not yet on holiday? The weather forecast for the beginning of this month speaks only of rain in Bucharest, but in the mountains the snow has already started to fall. Moreover, the presidential elections will roust many Romanians out of their homes towards the end of November. In the end, whether you are running for president or not, one thing is for sure: if you stay in Bucharest you won’t get bored. Just read this! ROMANIAN NATIONAL THEATRE FESTIVAL Despite the fact that it is called “national”, The National Theater Festival (FNT), which takes place between October 31st and November 8th, is a truly cosmopolitan event. Bulgakov’s Zoya’s Apartment, The Epic of Gilgamesh, Carlo Gozzi’s Princess Turandot, The Tempest, King Lear and The Winter’s Tale, Georg Buchner’s Danton’s Death, Psychosis 4.48 by Sarah Kane and the Three Sisters by Chekhov, the latter being presented in two different enactments, one of which is in Hungarian, these are only a few of the well known masterpieces that the festival offers you. The grand surprise is the La Cantatrice Chauve play by Eugen Ionesco, under the direction of Jean Luc Lagarce, a production of the Les Intempestifs company, present in Bucharest this year with the French Institute’s support. In order to celebrate Ionesco, marking 100 years from the famous Romanian play writer’s birth, the Festival is dedicating a special section to him. The program will also include a series of film screenings with theater shows, documentaries and portraits of artists from around the world. Another novelty of this edition is a section entitled Opera Revival, including five operas presented by famous theater directors and which incorporate a high dose of theatrics. At the Opera in Bucharest, you will be able to see Evgheni Oneghin and Macbeth, at the Opera in Cluj you will see Othello and Gianni Schichi, and at the Bulandra Theater, Orpheus and Eurydice. The program is complemented, as usual, with a series of other events: conferences, publication releases and debates with up to date topics. A series of presentations and discussions will take place, organized in collaboration with the International Association of Theater Critics, which the theater field’s professionals will contribute to, and a selection of the presented works will subsequently be published in a bilingual volume. The festival’s full program, together with the place and time of each event can be found on the FNT site, which is also available in English: http://www.fnt.ro/en

EXPOMIL 2009
DENTA – THE 22ND EDITION
The 6th edition of Expomil will take place on the 11th to the 14th of November, in the Romexpo exhibition centre, an exhibition of military technology organized by our country every other year. The institutions and organisations that collaborated in organizing this showcase event which is already inscribed on the circuit of specific international affairs, are The Ministry of Economy, The Ministry of National Defence, The Ministry of Administration and Interior, The Romanian Intelligence Service, ANCEX, Romexpo S.A., The National Company Romarm, as well as patrons associations PATROMIL and OPIAR. Companies from the Romanian defence industry and well known international firms will display military products and equipment in the Romexpo’s Central Pavilion, including equipment in use by fighting forces in military operation theatres. For the manufacturers, taking part in the exhibition represents an excellent opportunity to show advanced technologies and modern equipment, as well as to establish direct contacts with the business people present in the stands. For the delegations of specialists, participating at the event represents an opportunity to be informed of novelties in the defence industry, to estimate the possibilities for purchasing high performance special products and to forecast strategies to design purchase programmes in their own countries. The exhibition can be visited by specialists from November 11th to 13th, from 10 AM to 6 PM, and by the general public on November 14th from 10 AM to 4 PM.
During its two annual editions – one in the spring and one in autumn, DENTA shows the achievements and innovations by dental medicine professionals in Romania. It is also an international exhibition of equipment, instruments, accessories, materials and chemical-pharmaceutical products for dentistry and oral hygiene products, open at Romexpo, from the 18th to the 21st of November. Continuing the long tradition it has had so far, DENTA will be accompanied by a rich program of scientific lectures which are a part of the continuous training program of dentists in Romania. The success of the exhibition is insured by two factors: a variety of participants (212 firms from 16 countries participated in the autumn 2008 edition) as well as the target audience towards which the efforts of the organisers are channelled. More than 10,000 invitations have been sent to dentists and dental
technicians to come and check out the displayed products and equipment. Also, following the tradition, this is a sales exhibition, and it is the decision of the participating firms, according to their sale policy, whether to sell from their stand or just present the products. The pavilions in which the exhibition will take place are 14, 16, 17 and 18. DENTA 2009 – the Autumn Edition will be accompanied by a Congress organized by the Romanian Society for Oral Rehabilitation (SRRO) on the subject: “Dental medicine – between standards and common practice”

BETTING ON SHORTS The international short film festival Betting on Shorts – More than a Eurovision of Short Film will take place on Saturday, the 14th of November, starting at 8.30 p.m., at The Ark premises – the Stock Exchange, (196 A Rahova Road). Betting on Shorts (BoSs) is a competitive short film festival that takes place every year simultaneously in Athens, Barcelona, Bucharest, Istanbul, London, Maribor, Naples, Novi Sad, Paris, Poznan, Stockholm, Thessaloniki, and Wiesbaden. Every year, the organisers invite all film makers in the world to enter their short films in the competition. The films may not exceed 10 minutes. After an initial selection, ten to fifteen short films are chosen to participate in the final competition, an event that takes place at the same time in all the cities involved. This year the festival is organised by the Romanian Cultural Institute in partnership with The Ark – The Creative Merchandise Exchange. All 12 films will be screened simultaneously in all the partner locations of the project. In Bucharest, presentation will start at 9 PM. At the end of the projections, juries from every partner city, made up of film makers and film critics, will select the local winner. After collating the votes from each location in London, the winner of the competition will be announced on the same night. What makes this competition stand out from any other of short films is that the public becomes a major part of the project, as viewers have the opportunity to bet on the winning film. Five people from among those who bet on the final winner, as well as five of those who bet on the film voted by the local jury, chosen by drawing lots, will receive prizes offered by The Romanian Cultural Institute and the partners. www.bucurestiwww.ro

Unless one of the candidates gets one vote more than 50%, which seems unlikely with the large number of candidates running, a run-off poll will take place on the 6th of December. Voters can go to the polls starting with 7 AM and can vote to 9 PM in the town they live, at the voting site assigned to their place of residence.
FACETS OF MODERNISM The National Museum of Art of Romania, in collaboration with the B&M Theocharakis Foundation from Athens and the National Art Gallery from Sophia are organizing the “Facets of Modernism. Painting in Bulgaria, Greece, Romania, 1910-1940” exhibition. This exhibition is an integral part of the “Balkan Modernism” project, initiated by the Theocharakis Foundation in Greece and financed through the “Culture 2007 – 2013” program of the European Union. The project hopes to bring to the attention of the public the ways in which modernism was assimilated and interpreted in the Balkan region. The exhibition includes 120 works from painting and graphics and is structured in three large sections: “A new modern vision” (space, landscape, still life), “History in a modern vision” (national identity, divine inspiration, echoes of classical Greece), “Human presence in modern art” (portraits, the human body). Among the 18 artists chosen to represent Romania are both well established personalities of the avant-garde (Marcel Iancu, Victor Brauner, Max H. Maxy, Hans Mattis-Teutsch, Jules Per-

TITAN-BALTA ALBA One face of the new city of Bucharest
Catalina SOLOVEANU •
It had been an area of small houses and large gardens filled with fruit trees. All this gravitated around lake Balta Alba, a muddy and dangerous area, with wild vegetation and reeds. At the far end there was a very famous talcioc (bazaar), a place where later you could buy and sell anything, from cars to needles, but in the ‘50s you would find the treasures of the old elite of Bucharest.
oday Bucharest is not only the capital but also the largest city in Romania. It developed from one small village in the 15th century to an agglomeration of villages in the 18th and 19th centuries, and through urban planning became the city you can see now. The way it developed may be one of the reasons why there is a certain independence and separation between neighborhoods and why Bucharest has sometimes been seen as “a place where people have gathered”, not as a single whole. If you are a visitor who would like to see more of the city than the old center, then you might go for a walk around one of the newer neighborhoods such as Titan-Balta Alba, which lies in the south east of the capital. It was built during communist times and the name Titan suggests the magnitude of the building project: this neighborhood is one of the largest in the city. Of old it was called Balta Alba after the large lake that is still a focal point of the area.

Bucuresti what, where, when
Bucharest experienced a never before seen expansion after World War II. The communist authorities wanted to create a great city, and in just a few short years the capital was transformed by tall apartment buildings which surrounded the old buildings in the center, creating a belt of new neighborhoods. Balta Alba was one of the better areas, protected from floods, with a large lake at the center and once construction started the scenery went through an amazing transformation. The neighborhood starts beyond Soseaua Mihai Bravu, once the limit of the old city but now a part of a central ring road of Bucharest. People who moved there in the ’60, at the beginning of the building process, remember there were but a handful of apartment buildings and corn fields could be seen outside the windows. It had been an area of small houses and large gardens filled with fruit trees. All this gravitated around lake Balta Alba, a muddy and dangerous area, with wild vegetation and reeds. At the far end there was

a very famous talcioc (bazaar), a place where later you could buy and sell anything, from cars to needles, but in the ‘50s you would find the treasures of the old elite of Bucharest, now destitute and without any other source of income. The fair was usually on Sundays and sellers and buyers came from all over the city. Tables were set on the dusty ground for the grass was long gone due to all the traffic. Sellers with sweet tongues tried to convince you to buy and you quickly became skilled at negotiating if you wanted not to be cheated. The talcioc was a long standing tradition which transformed, survived, and still exists today as a fair for used cars. By 1984, 90,000 apartments had been built and Titan had become one of the largest neighborhoods in Bucharest. In 1981 the metro started serving the area with the Titan metro station being the most interesting of the new stops. It is a large station with a curved ceiling designed to resemble a sports hall. Many changes took place over the last twenty years. Hypermarkets were developed and the old commercial center was renamed Titan Mall but still stands guard over the area, next to the metro station. Street names changed as well, their old names of Stejarului (Oak Tree Street) or Catelu (Puppy’s street) were changed to more formal names of painters and events in Romanian history. The old folk still call them by the old names, the many changes having led to some confusion and resistance among the population. Other places were named in the local folklore for their shape or remnants of the construction period. Such is the case with the land marks of Potcoava (Horseshoe) block and Macarale (Cranes). The focal point of the neighborhood is lake Balta Alba. Although it is now in a park and its muddy past is but a memory, its depth makes it a dangerous place to swim. There have been some who tried and not always succeeded, a danger of a naturally formed lake, unlike many in Bucharest. Today, after much renovation works, the lake and the park surrounding it, now called Alexandru I. Cuza, after one of the greatest
rulers of 19th century, is considered one of the most beautiful in the city. It is divided into two parts by Titan Bridge and the wide boulevard leading to Titan Mall. The part that can be entered from Campia Libertatii street is very well maintained, no blade of grass out of order, music and plenty of space to sit and relax. During warm summer evenings shows take place and generally the kids of the neighborhood gather here. The young ones are brought in their prams while the older kids try their hand in the roller-skate area. It can get quite crowded, and so many people have started jogging in the evening that it can become an obstacle course. It’s still easy and pleasant to jog around the lake as the scenery is always changing and once you have moved past the Campia Libertatii area and entered the so called Titan area, the park gets a bit wilder. It is less crowded and from place to place reeds have grown tall yet another souvenir of its wild indigenous nature. Less local but thriving is a tortoise community. Apparently people left them there during the summer and now they call the Titan side of the lake home together with the ducks. Local stray dogs also hang out in the park sometimes, especially in the winter. If you want other activities, you can rent a kayak and explore the lake and its islands, or play football on one of the specially designated sports fields. Titan was a green neighborhood, created in times of relative wealth so the apartment buildings are a decent distance from each other, and patches of trees separate them. There is also a commercial area every here and there with shops and benches for people to gather and communicate. The plan was to create a community and to a certain extent it did. In the post communist years, the commercial areas have been transformed and now there are coffee shops, restaurants, pastry shops. Many of the green areas between buildings have survived the change in political regime but others have disappeared only to be replaced by villas and new shops. The neighborhood is expanding both outwards, toward the exit to the Sun Highway that leads to the seaside resorts, and towards the city center, creating a problem with overcrowding. Still, it remains one of the greenest
neighborhoods in the city and in the warm evenings it can seem like the whole neighborhood is taking a stroll. There is also a bit of a feeling of seaside added by seagulls which have made some of the building roofs their home. They came up along some of the rivers and by now are true Bucharesters. The spirit of community was helped by the fact that the early residents of the area were a mix from the old houses and newcomers from outside of Bucharest. Sometimes a whole street was moved into an apartment block and they brought with them the attitude of the mahala (the old periphery, the slum), together with their old customs and squabbles. Even today, old men and women sit on benches in front of the blocks and watch the passers-by, generally well informed as to what is happening in their area. They retire rather early in the evening and their place is taken by the young generation, people who have played together as little children and now they flirt in the hallways of the blocks and hang out in front, on the benches vacated by their elders. The people of the neighborhood are very fond of eating out, the area offers many places to relax, drink, eat and watch football games on big TV screens. Some are hidden among the trees and others are on the main streets. Italian food is popular and because some of the restaurant owners have lived in Italy, the food is quite tasty. The one thing missing is dance clubs, which are mostly in the center of the city. There is a large community swimming pool and a number of markets serve the area. One noteworthy thing is the new churches. They weren’t included in the original communist building plans but many have been built in recent years. The most memorable one is in the park, close to the Titan Mall. It was made of wood in the style from Maramures (north west Romania) and the 45m tower can be seen from around the park. Titan-Balta Alba may have been created during communist times, but while the blocks look as boring as in many other newer cities of Eastern Europe, it is a green and vibrant area, with a large beautiful park and people who enjoy living here, a very attractive area of the city.

Betting on Luxury - Extra v On the opportunity to invest in luxury residential properties Evelina NECULA, Marketing Manager, DTZ Echinox •
A lot of stir has been caused while talking about the largest transaction with a private property in the world, but the subject is filled with enough fascination for us to approach it today as well, in the context of an article dedicated to luxury properties. We are talking about the Leopolda Villa, situated in the Villefranche area on the Côte d'Azur, built in 1902 for the Belgium king, Leopold the 2nd, which was sold for the record breaking sum of 496 million Euros to Mihail Prokorov, a Russian billionaire. The villa’s value is based not only in its location, appearance or in the residence’s impressive size, but in a mix of details with a strong emotional charge modeling the property’s unique profile. Its noble origin is what contributes the most to its value, a universe of notable names which are included among its owners or its supposed owners, as well as the impressive gardens, through its landscaping, size and design. According to “Forbes”, a land area like this, exceeding 20 acres, is unique on the French Riviera, and it can only be obtained by joining two neighboring properties. The above mentioned glamor doesn’t seem to have just about anything in common with the local market specifics, however the same valuations also form the basis of large transactions in our local residential market. The properties’ intrinsic characteristics - location, area, style, facilities - intertwine with status and visibility, and they are spiced by their “folklore”, whether it is fashionable, aristocratic, picturesque or anything similar, in order to create a unique combination, of interest to a certain style of buyer.

a vagance or Investment? Naturally, such transactions most often remain out of the public eye, hidden by confidentiality contracts, however they consolidate the owner’s image among his peers, in his business environment, or they offer a hint of refinement to a purchase portfolio. A diversity of actors participate in these deals, from private persons (the so-called „high net worth individuals”) and families with a long-established tradition, to foreign investors and local or international companies (especially among those for whom image is essential - legal firms, consultancy companies, etc.). What brings them together is a high liquidity level, a special affinity for beautiful buildings, repositories of stories and traditions, as well as a deep understanding of the market’s dynamics and cycles. A very current theme in the crisis’ context is these properties’ resistance to the devaluation marking the entire residential segment. The extent to which such properties still represent an investment and still have a real value is currently being discussed. The discourse is as complex as it is subjective. When dealing with luxury properties, especially classical ones, the stakes are seldom strictly pecuniary. Most properties or most individuals who are interested in buying them show an attachment to this type of purchases, aiming to obtain emotional benefits, at least to the same extent as financial ones. Furthermore, the high liquidity level and their low borrowing dependence make the participants in these transactions less vulnerable to the crisis’ pressures. This explains why many of the deals which were closed on the luxury residential segment have not registered price reductions. Furthermore, in the context of the difficult access to credit and of the continuously higher financing costs, important purchases from the trade segment are blocked. Investments of tens and hundreds of million Euro are on stand-by for over half a year, thus making small properties, whose value does not exceed ten million, an interesting alternative for placing short and average term liquidities. Despite the fact that they are competing with other average level or B class office or commercial buildings in this segment, luxury residences have the advantage of a better preservation in time, especially due to their unique character. We can conclude the above mentioned ideas with the assumption that many of the properties with an excellent valuation, irrespective of whether they are from the Dorobanti area or on the French Riviera, shall not change their owners too often. Nor any time soon. They continue to remain investment opportunities, as well as remarkable portfolio pieces for a refined investor.

The Romanian Athenaeum: is a concert hall The Parliament Palace: is the second largest administrative building in the world (after the Pentagon) in terms of all-out surface: 330,000 m2. It was built between 1984 and 1989 by a team of architects led by Anca Petrescu. and was destined for the members of the Communist Party; Besides offices, Ceausescu planned to make personal living places, so the Palace's surface would have been bigger. The building currently houses Romania's Parliament. Visiting hours: 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday (By appointment only)
The Village Museum: nestled on the shore of the Herastrau Lake, the museum displays 85 peasant homes, barns, churches and mills relocated there from all over Romania. Tall-roofed Transylvanian houses with beautifully crafted shingles sit alongside rustic wooden churches to form a unique neighborhood. The overall impression is that Romanian peasants take great pride in their work and homes. Everyday accessories: tools, butter-churns, hay forks, beer kegs and clothes are displayed inside the house. This museum can take a whole day to explore and, in fine weather, families settle down for picnics in the scenic grounds. Visiting hours: 10 a.m. - 6 p.m., every day, except Monday
in the center of Bucharest and a landmark of the Romanian capital city. Opened in 1888, the ornate, domed, circular building is the city's main concert hall and home of the "George Enescu" Philarmonic and of the George Enescu annual international music festival. It has the aspect of a Greek temple with Ionic columns at the entrance. The wonderful interior with round frescoes depicts important events in Romania's history. Extensive reconstruction and restoration work has been conducted in 1992 by a Romanian construction company and restoration painter Silviu Petrescu, saving the building from collapse. Visiting hours: every day, unless concerts or rehearsals are held.
The Old Royal Court: during the early Middle
The Cotroceni Palace: is a part of the Cotroceni National Museum. The Cotroceni Palace, church and monastery reflect a three-century old history that interweaves political, military, diplomatic, religious and cultural aspects, with the general evolution of Romanian society. The palace was built in the 17th century by the Prince Serban Cantacuzino. The Cotroceni National Museum exhibits a rich range of objects of art, illustrative of the Romanian decorative art. Ages, Bucharest became a commercial center; important enough to enable the XIV century princes to build the Princely Court – nowadays known as "The Old Court" - which formed the development core of the medieval town. The first written mention of the name of "Bucharest" dates back to September 20, 1459: it appears on a document issued from the chancellery of the famous Prince Vlad Tepes (the Impaler). By the year 1599, a new Princely Court was built. Matei Basarab (1632-1654) renovated the Old Court. By 1640, because the prince's relations with the Turks worsened, Matei Basarab moved his Capital back to the town of Targoviste. Bucharest still remained a princely residence. In May 1654, Prince Constantin Serban Basarab (1654-1658), Matei Basarab's successor, left for Targoviste after a rebellion of his mercenary troops, and he ordered the Old Court to be set of fire. The Old Royal Court is an outdoor site that can be visited any time.

A Walk on An Autumn Evening Marcela GRATIANU •
t may be that in autumn, more than at any other time, you look back, at your memories of summer, over the years… you take a walk, you look around and you remember. Following your personal map of Bucharest with no particular goal, you instinctively listen to the memories nested in your heart. As you leave Cismigiu, with its sad benches behind, you go out onto Calea General Berthelot and, after a few steps, at no. 50, you see the blue logo of a restaurant I hold dear. It is a house with an interesting architecture and a noble atmosphere, a place where I had an amazing evening in the summer. It is the “Tasty Fish”, a seafood restaurant, which just opened in February. Fans of fish based menus have already discovered it and have quickly become its loyal customers because, as its name claims, the fish here is absolutely delicious. Indeed, the friends who recommended it for its pleasant atmosphere, its special dishes, for its good music and impeccable service were not exaggerating one bit. As soon as you walk through the gate, you are on the “terasa” of the restaurant while the entrance itself lies to the left, leading to the interior two largish rooms and a former wine cellar which is now transformed into a cozy room which can hold about 10-12 people. A warm, intimate atmosphere greets you, thanks to the elegant marriage of wooden hues with straw yellow, with the sweet, restful light surrounding the high windows, the archways and the paintings offering a distinct atmosphere to the rooms. You are guided to a carefully set up table - you could have chosen the terasa, but the weather might not be on your side – you take a seat and are ready to study the menu. What is new? You find all the tasty dishes of the water world gathered here, everything that the sea or the ocean can offer: beluga, sturgeon, salmon, garfish, dorada, oysters, clams. You can order them, prepared according to classic recipes and in a healthy way, as the fish is cooked on a special grill or in a convection oven, without the use of oil, or skillfully combined with ingredients from recipes which are full of surprises - from fish broths and soups to pickled fish, fish jelly, fish sausages or fish meatballs… You'll love it! Even more so as the fish is very fresh - it is brought once every three days and it is kept in ice chips, not frozen. Another secret is the fact that the chefs are from Galati, from the Danube’s shores, where the job of learning to prepare fish is handed down from father to son. Obviously, a good fish dish is even better with a good wine, and the house wines, white or rose, accompany the culinary wonders perfectly. The restaurant also offers classical, international menus, but it would be a shame to order pizza or chicken, in a place where the fish dishes are so great. Only for the dessert, where your taste might not be so exotic that you could maintain the fish line, you can opt for “papanasi” or a cheese and raisin pie. Even though you have learned crab ice-cream exists here as well… You hide the memory of the July evening as best as you can, not to lose it somehow, and head towards the Universitatii area. You don’t know how, but your feet take you to Terminus. The club is nice, and I

mean the part downstairs, the tar coated wood ship decor, where I have buried memories of passionate kisses and numerous blue nights. What will you like about this place? First of all the music, well chosen, diversified, ranging more towards the ‘80s-‘90s. Then, that unusual, but good feeling, that someone is pressing some buttons making space immediately turn into, at our heart’s desire, either an enclosed one, in discreet booths, protecting your love at the warm candle light, either an open one, on the dance floor - which, its true, isn’t very generous, but you forget about that when you suddenly see your own moves in the mirrors scattered all over the place. Every time we came here in a somewhat larger group, everyone, and I mean everyone, even the strangers, from the other tables, has felt, especially while dancing, as though we had known each other since the beginning of time. MASSAGE: Relaxation & Healing Everyone needs to relax, to escape from the turmoil of everyday life. Although often ignored or viewed as merely recreation, the art of massage is just that, and art as well as a science, and has been growing in popularity and acceptance in our community. Massage involves systematic stroking, rubbing and kneading of the soft tissues of the body in an effort to induce a state of total relaxation. Despite some misconceptions, massage has become more accepted as a means to relieve minor physical problems. Although massage has sometimes been discredited, by advocates of modern medicine, it has recently been growing in acceptance. Massage has been shown to help maintain stability and enhance performance in nearly all of the body's major systems. The muscular, skeletal, circulatory, nervous and respiratory systems can be positively affected by massage. The theory behind massage is the relief of muscle tension, and that relaxation of the body will allow for a faster healing process. Massage can increase and improve circulation to damaged tissue areas. People who play sports know that it is important to stretch and relax muscles for peak performance, and the same idea underlies the massage process. Perhaps the greatest benefit of massage, as any amateur can confirm, is the relaxing effect it can have on tense muscles. The smooth stroking motions and the kneading of muscles relieves tension, loosens joints and improves circulation, all of which are beneficial for good health. Of course it is recommended that people not replace necessary medical treatment with a massage. Sometimes medical conditions that could easily be cured by a simple medical treatment are identified as a simple tight muscle or something similar. Although massage does have positive medical benefits, in most cases it is not a replacement for modern medicine. The history of massage dates back almost as far as recorded history. For thousands of years some form of massage or the “laying on of hands has been used to helpl the sick. For the ancient Greeks and Romans, massage was one of the principal methods of healing and relieving pain. Generally, if you are in good health and just feeling a little tense, a massage may be a good way to go.. www.bucurestiwww.ro

place? That it isn’t open until the last client leaves, as it states. Anyway, it is the time to leave and especially so as it is almost empty now, and it is much too early. The real fun only starts after 10. You step out on Magheru Boulevard, but after a few steps, you could decide to make a right and yet again go towards the bundle of parallel streets. As you reach the Horizon Art Galleries (Galeriile de Arta Orizont), you can go down to the basement, to the already famous Art Jazz Club. And I say famous because this club is known and appreciated by both the crowd from Bucharest and the outsider. Over time, the club has hosted concerts of established artists, as well as plastic arts exhibits with the displays on sale - graphics and paintings -, and it has organized special theater and dance nights. I went to karaoke nights several times this summer. And they were very successful nights. You could choose from a generous repertoire the very song which you felt to be meaningful at least on a sentimental level if not on a vocal level, you asked for it from the guy at the booth and you set your eyes on the projected wall while giving an awkward smile to the

audience who was on your side anyway. A bit of luck and if you actually proved to have some vocal ability you could sing with a band and back-up vocals. world. It must have been the Chinese‌ beer. But an evening like this could delete all the bitterness you had absorbed the whole week from your mind. This evening, people are gathering for a new concert. People of all ages, all of whom are hopelessly in love with music, and especially jazz.

MARKETS IN BUCHAREST
One of the unique and more pleasurable forms of food shopping in Bucharest are the outdoor markets. Due to transportation difficulties, supplies are often copious at one market and non-existent at another. Of the markets listed here, Amzei market has the best selection and prices. It is advisable to bring your own shopping bags when shopping at the outdoor markets.
5 F A huge covered market located behind the Bucur Obor Department Store at the intersection of Calea Mosilor and Calea Stefan cel Mare. Although the selection of goods is big, the market is crowded and appears dirty. Watch your pockets and bags. If you’re looking for a truly Romanian market experience, this is your spot. Pets, including aquarium supplies, are available, as are fishing needs (including live worms, poles, lures). Wooden and woolen goods, ceramics, clothing, as well as plants cut and growing, are available. A large pedigree dog and cat market at least once a month on the street nearest Mosilor is a fun experience.

Located between Calea Victoriei and Blvd. Magheru near Piata Romana. The selection is somewhat better than other markets. There is a large and lovely flower section in a separate building at the edge of the outdoor section. Small buildings selling meats and imported items surround the outdoor market. Many kitchen utensils and housewares as well as personal care items can be found here. Recently the Market has started opening all night.
• PIATA 1 MAI: 5 C Located near La Fourmi on Ion Mihalache Blvd. It is a small market but has a good selection of fruit, vegetables and flowers. As with all the above markets, clothing, shoes, and household items for cleaning and cooking may also be found. Honey and other bee byproducts are a national pride of Romania and are found at all of these outdoor markets. 4 D Located indoors on Calea Dorobantilor north of Calea Stefan cel Mare. It offers produce and flowers. The quality is better than Amzei, but the prices are olso higher. Out of season exotic fruits and vegetables can be found here. There are several other stores in this area. The meat market inside is particularly good.
