Romania Accepted in ESTA International In 1972, Sir Yehudi Menuhin, disciple of George Enescu, along with other eminent artists, as Marianne Kroemer and Max Rost set ESTA - European String Teachers Association, with the aim of promoting the highest standards in teaching stringed instruments and encouraging exchange of ideas between string teachers and European artists. Romania was accepted by unanimous vote in ESTA, as the 30th member country, during the framework of the 41st ESTA International Conference held in the medieval town of Oxford, one of the most famous university centre of the world. ESTA Romania was represented by Luigi Gageos, president, and Nicolae Antonescu, vice-president. Giuranna Bruno, ESTA International president, stated on this occasion: “I am very happy to announce that at the ESTA delegates meeting in Oxford ESTA Romania was accepted as a new section of ESTA International Association. I am very proud of this. I have to thank Luigi

Gageos, ESTA Romania president, for the wonderful presentation he made for the new section. Welcome and good luck!” Holder of the highest honour given to a civilian by the Italian state - the Cavaliere di Gran Croce Merito della Repubblica Italiana, Bruno Giuranna is known as one of the most talented violist who has performed throughout his career with orchestras such as

the Berlin Philharmonic, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and Scala di Milano, under the baton of famous conductors, as Claudio Abbado, Carlo Maria Giulini, Sir John Barbirolli, Riccardo Muti and Sergiu Celibidache. On the same occasion, Luigi Gageos stated: “At a time when financial and moral crisis affects life of the society, I was pleasantly surprised to find at the ESTA

culture

International concerts and events from Oxford, many young people, regardless of their biological age, passionate about what they do. However, as a Romanian, I found a close relationship between ESTA International, founded by Menuhin and Romania, land of Enescu, also through the hundreds of violinists, violist, cellists and contrabass players from Romanian present in major European orchestras, many of them in key positions as concert masters.” ESTA International is a prestigious organization based in Bern, holding consultative status at the Council of Europe, an umbrella organization that hosts 30 countries and over 5,000 teachers as members. ESTA Romania aims to provide visibility and support to teachers and artists of violin, viola, cello and contrabass in the country. Those who need more information about the association will soon be able to access the official website of ESTA Romania.

Timisoara Parks in Autumn Wind is blowing stronger and colder for a few days now. Every once and then, rains pours and it is cold too. Summer days are long gone. In dazzling colors, the leaves of trees in Timisoara’s parks sing their last concerts to delayed lovers. Autumn silently walks the streets of the old city, reminding the passersby to review their deeds, their worries, and their memories…

Timisoara, also known as Temeswar or Temesvár, is the largest city of the historical region of Banat, western Romania. In 2011 it was the third most populous city in Romania. Its name comes from the river Timis, called in ancient times, by the Romans, Tibisis or Tibiscus. But much more about Timisoara you can find getting there for a weekend, after about an hour flight or after a 6-7 hours trip by train or by car. Timisoara is well known as the city that started the 1989 Revolution against the communist regime, but now I chose a walk through the city’s parks...

Buy an elderly if you do not have one

Autumn is the season when people count their achievements. During this time of the year, people check their barns, count their earnings and make plans for the next year. With the passing of each summer, the elderly count their worries and their memories gathered during their youth and recent years. In villages or in cities, the benches 6 Bucuresti what, where, when

in parks are full of gray-hair persons sharing one another their sadness, joy, and hope. Noticing them from a distance, without intervening in their talks, one cannot stop but thinking that time will bring us all gray hair and wisdom of sad eyes, faster than we will become aware of, in an almost unfelt and unknown manner… “It would be better if I would go faster where we all go when we die. I stay here and live in vain and it seems it is harder and harder to tie my laces. I lived enough. And I lived well. My children are all grown-up, well educated and have their own families and homes. Why should I bother them?” The old man sighs and seems to expect that someone approve his saying. The other discussion partners also have snow-like hair and remain silent. They are gazing at the rare dry grass. They must think the same, I say to myself. I am sitting for over an hour on a close-by bench, thinking to dive into reading a book I hold in my lap, but the elderly persons’ stories are distracting me. I look at them, pretending not to see them or hear what they are saying. They do the same. I am not included in their “circle of trust”. I do not have the necessary age yet. Therefore, for now, I am only allowed to observe them. Each face is different but there are the same unshared pains and same hopes. “Well, years go by in a second! We were young, now we are not. We are leaves in the wind”, says the old man, breaking the silence again and moving his hands in an imaginary flight. The others do not say anything once more. As having waited for a sign, each straightens his back, looks forward, takes a deep breath and gazes yet again at the grass that also bears the signs of bad weather. “Grandpa, grandpa, look!” All eyes are on a boy just a few years old that grasps some colored pebbles in his fist. The pebbles are then placed one by one in grandpa’s hands. “One, two, three, five …” the little boy counts. The eyes of grandparents are laughing. It is a continuous movement from Opera Square to the Central Park. People of all ages seem to run to a place unknown to all others. They enter and exit stores at great speed, greet each other while passing by and discuss various issues in a hurry, as if they would be afraid that extending the sentences would mean losing too much of their time. www.bucurestiwww.ro

Their footsteps are jerky, as in a general march, to all directions and to all parts. It is a pleasant bustle to the persons sitting on each of the benches on the alley and gazing at them, while remembering their longpassed youth.

Winter should never come!

It is the first sunny day after a period when even autumn seems to have been forgotten already. Those were the days when people hid themselves under warm clothes and boots. “I do not want any cold weather! I want sun! I do not want boots! I want sandals! Look, it’s like a poem…” a young girl laughs while still wearing a summer dress, but with autumn boots made of artificial suede embellished with lots of small punches. She is standing before a young man sitting on a bench. He also laughs when hearing her words and pulls her down by her hands, playing with them. “You’re crazy, my crazy girl!” The girl laughs again, making the elderly persons nearby pay attention to them. “I do not want rains; I do not want cold, I do not want snow! Winter should never come, so I can walk the streets. Her laughter is accompanies by the young man’s laughter once more; he pulls her sleeve, admonishing her for the noise she is making. It is still sunny outside, but not for long. Night threatens to come, so I decide to walk some more in down town Timisoara, to catch more moments, ideas, images and to try to guess the secrets on some faces. Each step of the way, there are couples strolling while holding their arms, young people with rucksacks, young women on high heels, and children running.

Memories of yesterday and memories of tomorrow

I find old people sitting on benches in the small park in front the Opera House too. They went outside to take a walk on the streets of the city, to enjoy the sun, but they got tired and sat on benches to catch their breath while looking at the passersby in that area. They speak of foreign countries, the lack of money, the cold in their homes and their worries about maintenance expenses during the winter season that will come. Others sat on the chairs of the few terraces that remained open, despite the recent cold days and those to come. Some talk with their children and have a beer. Others guard their nephews that were taken for a walk. The pigeons also linger in the late sun and do not fly, not even when toddlers brought by their grandparents to see them try to catch them by their tails. In buildings on the Strip, at windows, there are other people. They remain silent and look at the crowd’s movement, counting each step made on the slabs, each smile and each leaf that falls from the trees on the margin of streets, which still having bright colors burnt by sun. Everything leads to remembering. I head home, leaving behind the late elderly sitting on benches and the eyes I feel looking at me from the windows. I step on the old stone slabs, huge stones placed there hundreds of years ago. I walk by the old buildings and trees bearing the marks of weather and time. I take along all thoughts I gathered during that day, which are mine and of people like me. These are thoughts of what they lived and how they lived, of hopes and dreams, of passed memories, but especially thoughts for the memories of tomorrow… www.bucurestiwww.ro

Germany, a Favorite Destination for Romanian Tourists • GABRIEL ARSENE

Germany continued its success as a holiday destination. A consequence of this success is the significant increase in international overnight stays. According to the Federal Institute of Statistics, in 2012 there were over 68.8 million overnight stays of foreigners in accommodation establishments with ten or more beds, this figure representing an extra 8.1 % compared to the previous year. More than 52 million overnight stays were counted among European tourists. In the first six months of 2013, holiday destination Germany has developed in the same positive trend. In the period January to June 2013, there were already 30.9 million overnight stays of foreign tourists. This represents an increase of 3 % over the same period of the last year. “We hope that the 2013 figures continue to develop positively, and we expect an additional two to three percent for Germany ‘s incoming. This dynamic development in the most important source markets, takes us to reach in 2020 the threshold of 80 million overnight stays of foreign tourists,” told us Petra Hedorfer, Chairman of the Board of the German Tourism Organization (GTO), in Bucharest. From Romania, the German statistics included in 2012 total more than 557,000 overnight stays in accommodation establishments with ten or more beds, this figure representing an increase of over 20 %, compared to 2011. And the first half of 2013 has developed positively: during January to June 2013, there were approx. 285,000 Romanian tourists’ overnight stays in Germany, ie 12 % more than in the same period of the last year.

Romanians’ First Choice is the German cities

South East Europe countries are important growth markets for tourism in Germany. “In 2012 we recorded more than 1.9 million trips to Germany from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Montenegro, Romania and Serbia,” continued Petra Hedorfer. “On an average increase of about 3 % per year, the volume of visits to Germany from these source markets will reach more than two million travelers by 2020.” According to the information from GTO and from World Travel Monitor from IPK International, Romania recorded in 2012 over 525,000 travelers in Germany. This represents an increase of 11 % compared to the same period of the previous year . Holiday destination Germany is thus second in terms of the most popular foreign holiday destinations of the Romanian tourists. 35 % of the trips of the Romanian tourists in Germany are holidays - 40 % of them in the segment of city trips and travel for special events. 41 % of the voyages are business trips. With 30.2 % of all overnight stays, Bayern is the most visited federal state by the Romanian tourists, followed by Baden -Württemberg (19.7 %) and North Rhine-Westphalia (12.5 %). Overall, 93 percent of the Romanian tourists trips in Germany are longer stays (over four days). On average, Romanians spent Euro 658 for a trip. The total turnover of the travels of tourists from Romania to Germany in 2012 amounted to over Euro 300 million. The first three places preferred by tourists, and Romanians are no exception, are Neuschwanstein Castle in Schwangau / Füssen (Bayern), Europa-Park in Rust (Baden–Württemberg) and the Cologne Cathedral (UNESCO World Heritage Site).

German Beer, Oktoberfest, Munich…

The Munich Oktoberfest, the largest folk festival in the world, has its origin in the wedding ceremonies of crown prince Ludwig – later King Ludwig I. of Bavaria – with Princess Therese of SachsenHildburghausen in 1810. In 2013, the Oktoberfest is celebrated for the 180th time, since in 24 years Oktoberfest had to be cancelled, for different reasons. The opening of the Oktoberfest is the entry of the festival hosts and breweries. During the ceremonial opening of the fest, the families of the festival hosts in coaches adorned with flowers, the bands of the festival tents, the waitresses on decorated carriages and the magnificent horses and carts of the Munich breweries enter the festivalgrounds. This procession, on September 21, this year, is lead off by the “Münchner Kindl” – Munich’s symbol figure, on horseback, followed by the festival coach of the Lord Mayor. The Lord Mayor of Munich is also the Person who opens the Oktoberfest at noon. This year, on Saturday, September 21, he tapped the first barrel of beer and made the traditional announcement “O’zapft is” (“It has been tapped”). The City of Munich has been the organizer and developer of the Oktoberfest for the last 180 years. All important decisions regarding the Oktoberfest are made by the Economic Commission of Munich’s Municipal Assembly. The Oktoberfest represents an important economic value to the city which is estimated up to one billion Euros, and approximately 12,000 people are working at this festival. You could understand now just why I felt great in the first days of Oktoberfest 2013, together with other many Romanian tourists from the festivalgrounds, and together with the first million tourists registered just in the first weekend of the Oktoberfest!

Bucharest, amongst Reader’s Digest conducted a global, social experiment to find out which are the most (and least) honest cities in the world using the Lost Wallet Test. Helsinki is on top of the list, Lisbon is at its bottom, as the most dishonest city, while Bucharest is in the 11th position beside Rio de Janeiro and Zurich.

Cities end of the honor top. I also want to express my gratitude to other admirable people: Romanian tourists in New York, which raised the percentage of honesty in the American metropolis,” said Anca David Titorov, editor in chief of Reader’s Digest Romania. Of the 12 “lost” wallets in Bucharest - three in each of the four chosen areas, respectively Dorobanti University, AFI Cotroceni and Vacaresti Ave. were turned four. Winner in the category of honesty came Beller-Dorobanti residential area. With this score Bucharest ranked among the last places. But not at the bottom, as some would have expected maybe... Surprisingly, the same 11th place in the top as Bucharest, is shared with the prosperous Swiss city Zurich. And this place is placing Bucharest in front of Prague, Madrid and Lisbon.

Ranking Bucharest

Reader’s Digest, one of the magazines with the largest audience in the world, has announced the results of a test of honesty, achieved with “hidden camera” in 16 cities on four continents. Reader’s Digest has tested hundreds of people to find out how honest they are, “losing” wallets on the street and observing how many of them have been returned. Each “lost” wallet, said a story about the immorality, the struggle with the temptation of money, but also offered an encouraging confirmation about the honesty of some people. Reader’s Digest reporters scattered 192 wallets in cities in Europe, North and South America, and Asia. Each wallet contained a fictitious identification and a telephone number, a family photo, shopping vouchers and an amount in local currency equivalent to 50 U.S. dollars. Reader’s Digest reporters have left wallets in parks, close to shopping centers and on the sidewalk, and then waited to see what happens. Of the 192 “lost” wallets 90 - ie 47%, were returned. Reader’s Digest survey findings are surprising: • Age is not a factor that determines whether a person is honest or not. In all 16 tested cities, both young and old have returned or kept the wallets; • Gender of people was not a determining factor for a particular type of behavior, although women in two cities stood out for very different reasons: in Warsaw, all unreturned wallets were kept by women, in Ljubljana, from the six wallets send back five were returned by women; • The welfare offers no guarantee of 12

MUST SEE IN BUCHAREST THE PARLIAMENT PALACE

THE COTROCENI PALACE

It is a part of the Cotroceni National Museum. The Cotroceni Palace, church and monastery reflect a three-century old history that interweaves political, military, diplomatic, religious and cultural aspects, with the general evolution of Romanian society. The palace was built in the 17th century by the Prince Serban Cantacuzino. The Cotroceni National Museum exhibits a rich range of objects of art, illustrative of the Romanian decorative art. The Cantacuzino space is most suitable for organizing presentations of old art objects that can only outline the exceptional artistic accomplishments of a distant epoch.

It is the second largest administrative building in the world (after the Pentagon) in terms of all-out surface: 330,000 m2. It was built between 1984 and 1989 by a team of architects led by Anca Petrescu. and was destined for the members of the Communist Party; Besides offices, Ceausescu planned to make personal living places, so the Palace’s surface would have been bigger. The building currently houses Romania’s Parliament. Visiting hours: 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday (By appointment only)

Massage: Relaxation & Healing

M

assage involves systematic stroking, rubbing and kneading of the soft tissues of the body in an effort to induce a state of total

relaxation. Although massage has sometimes been discredited, by advocates of modern medicine, it has recently been growing in acceptance. Massage has been shown to help maintain stability and enhance performance in nearly all of the body’s major systems. The muscular, skeletal, circulatory, nervous and respiratory systems can be positively affected by massage. The theory behind massage is the relief of muscle tension, and that relaxation of the body will allow for a faster healing process. Massage can increase and improve circulation to damaged tissue areas. People who play sports know that it is important to stretch and relax muscles for peak performance, and the same idea underlies the massage process. Perhaps the greatest benefit of massage, as any amateur can confirm, is the relaxing effect it can have on tense muscles. Of course it is recommended that people not replace necessary medical treatment with a massage. Sometimes medical conditions that could easily be cured by a simple medical treatment are identified as a simple tight muscle or something similar.

The City Offers

A

s much as work and stress as may represent your usual day, as much as you may feel that you are lost between meetings, important decisions, projects and work plans, you must admit that you sometimes think about possible moments of relaxation, with everything that might include. Whether a comfortable sofa suddenly comes to your mind, or you imagine yourself in front of a promising and dynamic TV or movie screen, or you think of the future coffee on a terrace with a dear companion, or new clothes to choose or to try on, the fast workflow is interrupted by such flashes. I would gather this entire complex into a single word: entertainment. There may not be many people who ask themselves “What does entertainment mean today”. Once the word covered something far less complicated than today. It designated a way of spending spare time in a pleasant and relaxing way. But now, when everything 22

what, where, when

www.bucurestiwww.ro

is compacted into smaller and smaller time units, the appearance of things changes daily, and the idea of spare time is more and more vague and almost about to be extinct. So it’s no wonder that anything that suggests spending time in a different manner than working can be considered entertainment. Especially if you leave your home for one, two or several days. What is called “business tourism” today does not exclude the desire for some time pleasantly spent. And once having arrived at a new destination, the search begins. The possibilities are, as many and as different, on all the levels and underground structures of a city, especially if we are talking about a Capital. A living, constantly moving and changing Capital, such as Bucharest, a town in action that offers many things, but also requires a lot of tenderness. So let’s take things one step at a time. A trip to an unknown place forces you to change the stereotype move with a slower walk, combined with gaping and watching new things.

MUST SEE IN BUCHAREST THE VILLAGE MUSEUM

Nestled on the shore of the Herastrau Lake, the museum displays 85 peasant homes, barns, churches and mills relocated there from all over Romania. Tall-roofed Transylvanian houses with beautifully crafted shingles sit alongside rustic wooden churches to form a unique neighborhood. The overall impression is that Romanian peasants take great pride in their work and homes. Everyday accessories: tools, butter-churns, hay forks, beer kegs and clothes are displayed inside the house. This museum can take a whole day to explore and, in fine weather, families settle down for picnics in the scenic grounds. Visiting hours: Nov.-Apr.: 09:00 - 17:00., May-Oct.: 09:00 19:00, every day, including Monday THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF ART

The museum is hosted by the former Royal Palace and is the most representative art gallery in Romania. The Royal Palace was the official residence of the Romanian kings. Its current facade was given the finishing touches in 1937 when Carol II was King of Romania. The National Art Museum Palace is located in downtown Bucharest (in the so-called Revolution Square). The Palace displays an extensive collection of European and Romanian fine art. The European Art Gallery offers an overview of teh most important artistic movements that marked art history from the early Rennaissance till the first decades of teh 20th century. The Romanian Modern Art Gallery illustrates the development of Romanian fine arts from the first decades of the 19th century till the second half of the 20th century. Visiting hours: Wednesday through Sunday 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. (May - September) 10 a.m - 6 p.m. (October - April) Closed: Monday, Tuesday THE OLD ROYAL COURT

During the early Middle Ages, Bucharest became a commercial center; important enough to enable the XIV century princes to build the Princely Court – nowadays known as “The Old Court” - which formed the development core of the medieval town. The first written mention of the name of “Bucharest” dates back to September 20, 1459: it appears on a document issued from the chancellery of the famous Prince Vlad Tepes (the Impaler). By the year 1599, a new Princely Court was built. Matei Basarab (1632-1654) renovated the Old Court. By 1640, because the prince’s relations with the Turks worsened, Matei Basarab moved his Capital back to the town of Targoviste. Bucharest still remained a princely residence. In May 1654, Prince Constantin Serban Basarab (1654-1658), Matei Basarab’s successor, left for Targoviste after a rebellion of his mercenary troops, and he ordered the Old Court to be set of fire. The Old Royal Court is an outdoor site that can be visited any time. THE ROMANIAN ATHENAEUM

Is a concert hall in the center of Bucharest and a landmark of the Romanian capital city. Opened in 1888, the ornate, domed, circular building is the city’s main concert hall and home of the “George Enescu” Philarmonic and of the George Enescu annual international music festival. It has the aspect of a Greek temple with Ionic columns at the entrance. The wonderful interior with round frescoes depicts important events in Romania’s history. Extensive reconstruction and restoration work has been conducted in 1992 by a Romanian construction company and restoration painter Silviu Petrescu, saving the building from collapse. Visiting hours: every day, unless concerts or rehearsals are held.

MARKETS IN BUCHAREST

One of the unique and more pleasurable forms of food shopping in Bucharest are the outdoor markets. Due to transportation difficulties, supplies are often copious at one market and non-existent at another. Of the markets listed here, Amzei market has the best selection and prices. It is advisable to bring your own shopping bags when shopping at the outdoor markets.

PIATA OBOR 5D : A huge covered market located behind the Bucur Obor Department Store at the intersection of Calea Mosilor and Calea Stefan cel Mare. Although the selection of goods is big, the market is crowded and appears dirty. Watch your pockets and bags. If you’re looking for a truly Romanian market experience, this is your spot. Pets, including aquarium supplies, are available, as are fishing needs (including live worms, poles, lures). Wooden and woolen goods, ceramics, clothing, as well as plants cut and growing, are available. A large pedigree dog and cat market at least once a month on the street nearest Mosilor is a fun experience. PIATA 1 MAI 5D : Located near La Fourmi on Ion Mihalache Blvd. It is a small market but has a good selection of fruit, vegetables and flowers. As with all the above markets, clothing, shoes, and household items for cleaning and cooking may also be found. Honey and other bee byproducts are a national pride of Romania and are found at all of these outdoor markets. PIATA DOROBANTILOR 5D : Located indoors on Calea Dorobantilor north of Calea Stefan cel Mare. It offers produce and flowers. The quality is better than Amzei, but the prices are olso higher. Out of season exotic fruits and vegetables can be found here. There are several other stores in this area. The meat market inside is particularly good.

important role in the process. Of course one justification for wealthy men running for office is that “they don’t need to steal”, they will be honest and independent. But that does not seem to be the case, even if you are rich it seems you want and need more, on the other hand unless you are wealthy, or have wealthy supporters, you can no longer run a credible campaign for political office. So there is a growing gap, not only between the very rich and the poor, but between ruling politicians and ordinary people.

Dear Reader,

the last word

I have been visiting and working in Romania for a long time, and have seen the country, and especially the City of Bucharest, go through dramatic changes. I remember speaking with people before elections in the mid-nineties. I was so impressed by the determination of people who worked with me to vote. During the early years of the post communist era, people went out of their way to be able to vote. A couple of them took long trips back to their home county, where they were registered, to be able to vote. As multi-story towers and apartment houses have risen in Bucharest, so it seems voter participation has declined dramatically. And I tell you this because I understood next year is again an election year in Romania. Maybe that is because in Romania, as well as the USA money plays an ever more

More and more, Romania has become a consumer society, and people who run the major retail chains seem to feel that there is no limit to retail spending in the country, as they build more and more hypermarkets and shopping malls. You may want to note that you read it here first, but, I believe that Romania is in a “retail bubble”, which will implode sometime next year. When that happens, that could be the signal of a “bottom” in Romania’s economy, and we may begin a slow, but steady recovery. You, Dear Readers, as temporary visitors to Bucharest, should take advantage of the many sales and special offers over the next weeks, as retailers begin “Christmas sales” weeks before the Holiday. I hope the weather remains favorable for the next period.
