Politics remains the mainstay of the contemporary Romanian reality, although it hasn’t brought us great achievements and joy lately. Even we passed the election year, we didn’t learn that even if we got almost nothing, we are now asked back tenfold. Yet, many of my relatives or friends fail to rid of the TV screen at political issues. There are families in which there are even disputes on the subject. Film would be the choice of the woman, while politics for the spouse, or the men would watch a soccer game, while his wife wants politics! We are lucky with this spring, even a late one, that we got rid of the snow and of the freezing temperature, but many of us will forget to look now at blossomed cherry trees, or whether we look we will not see the essence of the new cycle of life irruption with the triumph of the sun on the night. Again we need to thank the Lord (who else?), at least those who still have relatives or houses at countryside, and peasants, which wake us to real life. We visit them before Easter hoping to get a piece of lamb, organic style raised (!), or even a few slices of fresh cheese, organic also, and we ﬁnd out from them that the vine has budded, the cherry or apple trees bloomed, while the onion and lettuce are rising! We don’t always understand those words, a sign that we have removed from the village too much, but for the moment we enjoy for the happiness of our relatives. We even remember that recently, we have heard on TV that the modest economic growth from last year could have been much improved if the agriculture… Now we realize again that agriculture it’s also this, with the budding vine, blossomed cherry and apple trees, onion and lettuce which rises and grows!

If I had been in Japan during this period, even in Washington or in the cosmopolite Switzerland, I would have been directed to mandatory attend the feast of blossomed cherry tree, which every year enjoys the glances and souls of many tourists and also residents, those who initiated in fact the feast. However, in the last couple of years I feel myself more and more tourist in my country, because I cannot stop being amazed at what my eyes see every day here.

City tumult took us too far from nature and its simplicity, and a weekend in the mountains is not enough to return us to normal. A visit to relatives in the countryside before Easter is much more useful! We learn so that you can live with less politics and TV, because the Romanian peasant knows what is wrong (most times), or good, when it’s reality, most times goes in his wallet! Here I came, as in Tokyo and Washington, also to the essence of the blossomed cherry trees! And we don’t need to travel so far, this essence it’s also here, where we feel the blossomed scents!

Quality Music at EUROPAfest 20 The sole European festival that brings together four musical genres - jazz, blues, pop and classical music, is programmed every year in Bucharest, with each succeeding edition managing to create a positive image of Romania.

Under the motto “It’s All about Live Quality Music,” EUROPAfest returns in 2013 with quality artists and music, with a fresh image, but also with a surprise awaited for long time by its fans - the event is programmed during 17 days! “Small Change, Big Difference” at Athénée Palace Hilton Athénée Palace Hilton Bucharest hotel guests contributed to improving the lives of disadvantaged children and youth in Romania by raising the sum of 5076.07 Lei in the annual campaign “Small Change, Big Diﬀerence.” Taking place from October to December 2012 in Romania and in 144 other Hilton hotels in 21 European countries, the “Small

Change, Big Diﬀerence” resulted total fundraising of 177,500 Euro. This money will help individuals from diverse disadvantaged groups. Through this campaign, Hilton Worldwide entire group guests are invited to donate 1 euro, optional amount to be added to

the cost of their stay in participating hotels. Launched in 2004, the “Small Change, Big Difference” so far raised over 1.33 million Euros. Linda Griffin, General Manager, Athénée Palace Hilton, told us: “I would like to express my gratitude for the generosity and support of our guests. This campaign provides an ideal opportunity for involvement and social responsibility. Throughout the year we operate numerous other actions by the charitable foundation “Hilton in the Community,” and “Small Change, Big Difference” has proven to be an effective fundraiser.” A check for 5076.07 Lei was recently awarded to the OvidiuRo Association representatives, as a sign of support to the project Each Child in Kindergarten. The program supports more than 1,400 poor children go to kindergarten. “50 Lei social tickets per month we offer parents that bring their children to kindergarten every day are of great help to these families and is in turn a “small change” that makes a difference in the lives of some children. Our program has increased the presence of children in kindergarten, so we want it to become public policy,” told us Maria Gheorghiu, cofounder of OvidiuRo. “Hilton in the Community” Foundation offered help to children in Romania since

2003, actively collaborating with a large number of charities as OvidiuRo, House of Hope (Hospices of Hope Romania Ltd), Mia’s Children Foundation and United Way Romania. Hilton in the Community Foundation was founded in 2000 as Hilton Worldwide’s charity vehicle in Europe dedicated to supporting young people in need by combating exclusion and providing skills, aspirations and opportunities. Focused on improving access to, and the quality of, education and healthcare, the Foundation mobilizes local giving and targets four key areas: disabled children, children in hospitals, children’s hospices and homelessness. Grants help vulnerable and disadvantaged young people in Europe. Parks

Looking on a calendar spring has returned to the city. The meteorologists used to say Romania is a country of temperate climate or so. There used to be four seasons, none to harsh or extreme, a real joy to experience it any time during the year, be it spring, summer, autumn or winter. Each season comes in many different colors and temperatures and sometimes cheekily surprising you. This year the winter it would prolong its low temperatures to the beginning of April, when the sun may finally decide it wants to come dance. It is finally beautiful and exciting, we may be quite happy with the nice weather to come in a city that would look greener after a long winter.

The good weather lures the Bucharesters and our visitors out of the homes or hotels, taking them for a long stroll along the city streets. The women came out shopping, highschool children skipp classes and take refuge in the terrace bars, and the elderly arrange rendezvous in the park for a game of chess, backgammon or to debate on the political issues. Even the homeless are sitting down on benches in the sun. If you came out to take a few steps along the city streets together with the Bucharesters who seem to have remembered their spring habits and moved in the streets, you could try walking in Cismigiu Park on this pleasant spring day and you will understand, once more perhaps, the amazing powers of transformation that nature has. Always when I am “in the area”, I decide to walk in Cismigiu. Here, this still enthusiastic spring spread joy to all its visitors. As I am walking through the

17 hectares of the oldest public garden of the Capital I discover always the statues with their own histories, the children playgrounds, full of joyful kids, and on the sides, the elderly occupying in a long line all the benches on the alleys, gaze at them, reminiscing maybe on the days of their past youth. A place more isolated, as if it was especially created for the lovers is La Cetate (By the Fortress), a corner for retired persons in the ﬁrst place, but for all who love board games and chess: the Corner of the Chess Players… As I continue my walk on the alleys bordered by trees, I pass near Eminescu’s spring, where people still come for water, and I reach the main entrance of the garden from the Elisabeta Boulevard, across which the City Hall of Bucharest (still in renovation) is located and on the left, another boulevard, Schitu Magureanu, bordered by the building of Gheorghe Lazar high school, an old, high level

school of the city. Not far from the high-school stands the new bust on high pedestal of Pope John Paul the Second, just in front of the office of the Apostolic Nuncio in Romania. The sun is mild and friendly and the park it’s beautiful, I wouldn’t want to leave anymore… I continue my walk through the nature which is continuously changing, the same like the history of the park, described on an interesting panel. In the age of Alexandru Ipsilanti, there was an enormous moor, called the Moor of Dura the Merchant. The current name of the park was taken over from the chief of the works – Cismigiu, who lived near by. In 1847, supervised by the Viennese landscaper Carl F.W. Meyer, the arrangement works were started, and in 1854 the official initiation took place. The moor was transformed into a lake, in the middle of which a beautiful spring-well is located. On the alleys marked around the lake by the landscaper more than 30.000 trees were planted, from native species (maple, linden tree, fir, elm), as well as from rare species (red chestnut, sycamore tree). Also, small caves and bridges over the lake’s channels were built. To the end of the 19th century, one of the first newspaper kiosks in Bucharest was set at the main entrance in Cismigiu. Today, the restored kiosk may still be admired. A special attraction in Cismigiu is represented by the Romanian traditional restaurant built by the architect Ion Mincu and called Monte Carlo. Nowadays, the place with the terrace near the lake continues to attract many people offering season’s menu. On the side to Schitu Magureanu Boulevard a rotunda was set up, in the middle of a green space, which may still be admired today: the Roman Rondo. Officially opened in 1943, the rotunda contains stone hand-carved busts on high pedestals, rendering the faces

of famous figures of Romanian culture: Mihai Eminescu, I.L. Caragiale, George Cosbuc, Ion Creanga, B.P. Hasdeu, Nicolae Balcescu, Vasile Alecsandri. On the alleys you may admire more statues, of Sister Smara, of George Panu, the Monument of French Heroes, Sissi Stefanidi Spring – a mother in deep suffering after the death of her daughter pours water with the mug… The pigeons also seem to have convened a rendezvous in the park. They fly in hundreds over the alleys and land to peck on the seeds or bread pieces spread by the people. You may always be amazed by all the new information you get after a walk on the alleys of this green corner of Bucharest, even if you pass it daily! On the lake, delicate swans ignore you with their splendor… This life fragment reveals to you the eternity of this central garden, where everybody feels good. You can roller skate, skateboard, relax, even sleep on a bank or you can sometimes have your future foreseen, from tickets extracted from a box by a very colourful parrot. Cismigiu is never deserted, this is the conclusion. The first snowdrops, the colours of autumn, the freezing of winter and, last but not the least, the spring and summer sun, always attract us on the alleys of this immortal garden, to visit it over and over again.

Go Herastrau! After Cismigiu Park, one of the oldest and most beautiful park of Bucharest, I invite you in Herastrau, the largest park and garden of the Capital. Located in the north of the city, on an area of 110 hectares (270 acres), the place was, before 1930, a marshy area that would be drained during 1930-1935. Also called Carol II Park, the Herastrau was a promenade place even in the eighteenth century. Princes and their wife used to walk with the ladies of the Court suite, with a large boat on the lake, on the music accompaniment. Old Herastrau had two theaters, one for adults and one for children, two exhibition halls, libraries, reading and chess corner and a landing place for boats. Herastrau it’s also renowned for the Village Museum, which includes a great variety of country houses displaced here, churches and wind- or water-mills, and inns, barns… Basically, it is a miniature universe of the Romanian village, especially for tourists. Another interesting museum you can visit in the same park is the one of the locomotives and trains, while Elizabeth Palace, the actual residence of the former king of Romania, is another key point with its elegance and grave architecture. like roller bike lanes? Herastrau has a special corner set up for that. Warning! The place makes no warranties against falls! For perfume and color, I highly recommend the Japanese Garden with its bridges over water, stones arranged in all kinds, rustic wooden benches. Statues of important people of national and international culture add to the appeal of the park. Another garden that enhances picturesque I consider to be the corner of the painting, a special place where you always find a painting or drawing exhibition. Off the bridge, in the distance, I see a fisherman is throwing his fishing rod into the lake waters… The only sailing club in Bucharest and most active of the country is still here – Yacht Club Sportul Studentesc. But what surpasses all existing beauty here is a boat ride. During spring, in any full of warmth day, people of all ages do walk in the sun. Terraces and restaurants located on the waterfront are full. Reasons to go to this park? If those above did not convinced you, just walk up there: the old romantic air, the green, so much even now, trees like in stories, skate and the Village Museum, beautiful lake and a walk around, or the amusement park… Even in the evening the park is beautiful with its lights. At late hours you find amateur and professional rollers and bicyclers and those who choose to relax by jogging. So yes, it’s worth going through Herastrau! The ladies chose to take advantage of the sun not by sitting on benches but by going shopping. On high thin heels and in colourful overcoats draping over their shoulders or on their arms, the women carry bags of all sizes… Some of the ladies are already wearing summer shoes but hang onto all the shop windows with boots in sight. Going shopping is a “syndrome” of these years, but the crisis left us more time to check an interesting park and a wealthier climate. Beside the two important parks, the sixth sector encircle Lacul Morii (the Mill’s Lake). This accumulation lake was built in order to prevent the flooding generated by Dambovita River that enters the city through north-west. The 246 hectares (610 acres) water surface was built in the communist period (together with the river rectification) and have changed for today’s and tomorrow’s generation the appearance of these places. In fact, each sector of Bucharest has its big green area, but also smaller green corners, increasingly every year. Just half an hour drive from the Capital, other special places await for you…

An interesting exhibitor at the International Tourism Fair of Romania (TTR), given that Greece did not have a national stand, was the region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, who attended with success at TTR 2013, as we learned from officials of this important region of Greece. During participation in the TTR, the development director of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace region, while also deputy prefect, George Geromarkos, organized a press conference with guest the Minister of Tourism in Macedonia and Thrace, Theodorus Karaoglou. The two officials appreciated the Romanian tour-operators interest to eastern region of Macedonia and Thrace, as well as the interest of the Romanian tourism representatives. Throughout the period of the fair, George Geromarkos had contacts and discussions with representatives of the Greek Embassy and with representatives of travel agencies who visited the stand of the Ministry of Macedonia & Thrace. For marketing various areas of the region, at the TTR stand has been a drawing lot that has targeted winning short stays for lucky tourists. In this way the tourists will come into contact with destinations from Eastern Macedonia and Thrace region and with the hospitality of the tourism professionals. Eastern Macedonia and Thrace region continues with optimism the tourism promotion program whose primary purpose is to strengthen cooperation and to attract a large number of tourists from Romania. During the press conference, we have been reminded that Macedonia and Thrace region is the closest to Greece area to Romania and the area with most historical ties between the two countries! From the 7th century BC until now, in Romania there is a Greek population which keeps traditions, being proud of their history. During the strong crisis still affecting Greece spring looks literally, because with summer approaching Greeks are again aware of their tourism potential. In the same direction moves also the Eastern Macedonia and Thrace area, trying to attract as many tourists. The region comprises the counties of Kavalla, Xanthi, Drama, Evros and Rodopi and two fascinating islands, Thasos and Samothrace. The area has significant historical monuments, with interesting architecture, but also beautiful natural landscapes, all combined with local traditions and customs very important for tourists.

PALM SUNDAY AT THE PEASANT MUSEUM

Easter will arrive soon. Hardly recovering from the rush begun by a March full of flowers, “martisoare” (a small traditional talisman given off on March 1, in Romania) and feminine presents , we already have to start preparing red or painted eggs and go shopping to get something new for Easter. Although I know that people no longer use to return to villages or to the middle of small communities where traditions are upheld and where Christian customs are reiterated every year, whether they are city dwellers or not, even today, people follow the customs and continue to guide their existence according to them. In a way, despite the fact that the forms are different, the customs and their symbolic significance are the same. Everyone participates as best they can and perhaps as best as they know how, but fundamentally, no one is left out of this celebration. In order to forget about the rush of our day to day lives and to feel the celebration, it is sometimes enough to enter the story and read a few beautifully crafted lines in a holiday atmosphere.

The Mythical Easter Red eggs, “pasca” (matzoh) and lamb, are well known ritual meals that accompany our Easter dinners. However, it is not food that matters for the most important Christian holiday, but the actions that accompany them and their meaning. Red egg tapping, bread dipped in wine almost automatically accompanied by the sign of the cross, that you taste after a night spent in church when you re-live the Passion. The bread and wine that grandma used to call “communion” would frighten and fascinate me all at once because, at that moment, it was the body of Christ, the glass of wine and the slice of “cozonac” (pound cake) whose clinks would bring our welfare, health and courage for the months to come. All these actions together would help bring tranquillity into our family and the lives of our dear ones. I do not refrain from believing that Holidays are the cultural part of each human being. We all have memories related to holidays and, aside from the great Easter, we all have

our own Easter, our own personal mythology. Mine was with little red dresses, patent leather sandals (also red), white veil tufts my mother used to make for me, grandparents, new things and playtime while going under the table in church. Then Resurrection. The glass of red wine, the cracked red egg, the communion and the tender lamb roast and tripe and many stories around the never ending dinner table. This is why, this time, I went for something perhaps less conventional for most of you out there (conventional as in regular). Thus, I will tell you two stories that are very dear to me. One sounds very much like a legend and the other is a true success story.

Where Do Sacred Foodstuffs Come From? I know that everyone, or most people, associate Easter traditions with the moment of Jesus Christ’s resurrection in Christianity. However, in Great Britain, many of the Easter traditions originate long before Christianity occurred. When trees would start blooming, pagan ancestors, or non-Christians - to be politically correct - would celebrate the coming of spring and would bake special patties for Eosturmonath (you pronounce it!). Eosturmonath were rituals marking the rebirth of nature. Eostre was the goddess of fertility for Scandinavians. The symbol of the goddess is none other than… the rabbit. This rabbit of the goddess is a sort of predecessor to the cute little Easter bunny. Nature, at that time was still dormant, and would not offer any greens, fruits or vegetables, and animals would not give an abundance of milk that people could use to prepare their meals. To find a solution for their food shortage, people would burrow into nests in search of wild birds’ eggs. And since back then, as well as now, things in the life of mankind were part of the ritual, children were the ones who searched for eggs, they were told that the bunny, the symbol of the goddess, is the one who hid the eggs from them. In Alsace, a large part of Germany, and even in Transylvania, the tradition that the small rabbit hides eggs from children is still maintained, and they must look for them, racing in real competitions. On the other hand, the egg is the most eloquent and the strongest symbol of fertility, of new and fragile life. And, through Christianity, it has become the central element in Easter holidays. Speaking of ritual food, the dough marked with the sign of the cross existed before Christianity as well, however, obviously with another meaning. People would mark the dough with this sign because it was supposed that it helped it rise better, except that the sign was not related to Christ, but in pre-Christian times, it represented the division of the year in its four seasons. It can thus be said that Easter eggs and Easter patties are actually contaminates; they are examples of the manner in which, in certain areas, Christianity has undertaken and adapted pagan symbols in its own rituals specific for the Easter holidays.

Easter Lamb

In predominantly Catholic European countries, the etymology of the word “Easter” comes from the Hebraic “pesach”, marking the moment when the Jewish people crossed the Red Sea. However, during the last dinner, Jesus told his apprentices that He was the Easter lamb, the sacrificed animal that Israelis ate on the “Passover” celebration. In Greece, a soup prepared out of lamb entrails is eaten on Easter. Greece and Russia are mostly Orthodox countries, similar to Romania, however lamb reigns supreme in festive Easter meals in Roman-Catholic countries as well. Such a wide spread custom indicates, without a trace of doubt, an extremely deep routed tradition, originating in an agricultural calendar. The egg and the rabbit certainly do not come from Christianity, irrespective of their forms, ingredients and their preparation as Easter food, ritual or not. For example, the French have a “sweet” Passover lamb, a sort of biscuit similar to ginger bread, shaped like a lamb, covered in a foamy marshmallow “fur”. The “egg fight,” a specific Easter custom is not only known, but still practiced today. In a medieval ritual, the Chester Bishop and the vicar would arrive at the cathedral on Passover Sunday armed with eggs to throw at the choir boys during sermon. The latter would in their own turn come well prepared to put up a fight against the “bombing” and then, after a good bath, they would all join at dinner with Easter eggs.

The Pride of the Easter Feast - Pasca Preparing by lent and prayer for 40 days, Christians now welcome with joy the “greatest holiday” of all: the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. After having enjoyed the preceding moments of the great celebration, Christians celebrate the Holy Week, also called Passion Week, which brings about the long awaited celebration of the renewal of the spirit. Within this time interval, Christians receive the communion, they commemorate the dead, and they fast even more rigorously, since this is the time when Christ was betrayed, caught and crucified. On Good Friday, many people even hold the Black Fast. At the same time, there are completed the preparations for Easter Sunday and for the Bright Week, when the world celebrates the victory of good over evil. Paste, which is the Romanian word for Easter, comes from the Latin pascha, taken over, in its turn, from the Greek paskha, which is a translation of the Hebrew word pesah (“Passover“). The Jewish holiday dates back in the haze of time, and it commemorates the liberation from the Egyptian slavery, when Moses and the Israelites left towards the Promised Land, where they settled after a peregrination of 40 years in the desert. For Christians, Easter represents the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, who suffered willingly and who was crucified for the purification from sins of all descendants of Adam, so that they could be given the chance of eternal life in the Kingdom of Heaven. In the Christian tradition, on the third day after the crucifixion, Jesus rose from the dead, and 40 days later, he ascended to heaven, at God’s right hand. In time, many cultural non-religious elements were included in the Easter celebration, and nowadays, Easter is no longer celebrated only by Christians. For Christians, the lamb, the Easter bread (Pasca, in Romanian) and the wine are symbols with new meanings: the lamb is Jesus Christ, who accepts the sacrifice. The Easter bread torn into pieces and the wine poured thereupon signify Christ’s sacrifice. The Pasca is the traditional pound cake prepared by Romanian women at Easter, from unleavened dough. The Easter bread is prepared on the eve of the Resurrection, on the Saturday before the Easter day, to keep it fresh. A legend from Bucovina says that, when Jesus Christ used to travel with his disciples, they spent the night at a peasant’s house, who filled their bags with food. The Apostles asked Christ when Passover would come, and he answered that Passover should come when they find corn flour bread in their bags. Looking in the bags, the apostles saw that the peasant had given them pieces of corn bread, and they knew that Passover had come. Today the Pasca is made from carefully chosen wheat flour of the best quality. The unleavened pound cakes prepared for Easter may be round – reminding the linen of the baby Jesus – or rectangular – the shape of His tomb. Small pound cakes, called “Easter buns” are prepared for children. Eggs, cheese, sugar, raisins and cinnamon are a few of the ingredients used to prepare this special variety. The Pasca may be decorated with the Christian cross, but also with flowers, leaves, birds, made from dough and baked on the golden brown crust of this special cake (in Bucovina). Women bake it only for Easter. They usually insert cow cheese, rarely sheep cheese, salted and kneaded with yolk, wiped and smoothed with egg on top. The cake is taken to the church to be blessed by the priest during the Easter service. Traditionally, the Pasca is prepared to be taken to the church by cutting it into small pieces, wrapped in napkins. Thus, it is related in the orthodox tradition with the Eucharist bread, based on which the communion is prepared and from which 10

the sacramental bread is cut into pieces at the church. The Pasca pieces are taken home and kept to help the faithful participate to the blessing of the Lord, since they have the power to chase away illnesses and troubles. With cheese and raisins, chocolate and almonds - nonconforming variants of the original, with milk and sour cream or nuts and chocolate chips, with vanilla, rum, orange or lemon, with ﬁgs or dates, or even rice, the Pasca represents, together with the lamb steak and the red-dyed eggs, the particularity of the Easter dinner, crowning the joy of the Paschal celebration.

Romania at Easter Time Most Romanian Easter traditions are the same all over the country. Still, each region has some specific customs and practices. Typically associated with the natural beauty of the areas, some of them legendary, the Easter Holidays should encourage you to explore Romania. Are you going to be in Romania for Orthodox Easter this year? Then you could spend this holiday in a unique and unforgettable way. Although staying in Bucharest doesn’t mean you are going to be bored, as there are many places to go and a lot of things to do, few of the old traditions have been kept alive here. If you really want to experience Romanian Easter, you need to go to villages or small towns. In Muntenia, an old belief says that on Easter the weather will be just as it is on Florii. The popular name of this holiday comes from the Roman goddess of flowers, called Flora. In the countryside, peasants make big fires on top of the hills during the Easter night. The fires are called “watch fires”, and in some villages they burn all night, the fires can be seen not only on the hills, but also the valleys. The celebrants sit around the fire, re-telling stories from the life of Jesus. The boys and the young men jump over the fire, so that witches will have no power over them. A washing ritual takes place on Easter morning, the villagers put a red egg in a basin or, in some places, a silver coin, over which they pour fresh water brought from a well. All the members of the family wash themselves, while saying: “Let me be healthy, and may my cheeks be as red as the egg; let everybody want me and wait for me as are awaited red eggs on Easter; let me be loved like eggs on Easter Day.” Then they take the silver coin and, passing it over their faces, they say: “Let me be proud and clean like silver”. The girls add to that: “Let me pass from one hand to another while dancing, like money; let me be light like the egg-shell, which floats on water”. In some villages, they also put common basil in the basin, for they say that if you wash yourself with it you will be honored like basil. Having come back from church, the family sits around the table. After eating and toasting with glasses of drink, there comes the great moment: the knocking of eggs. The head of the family knocks first with his wife, speaking the traditional “Christ has risen!”, to which the response comes right away: “He has risen, indeed!”. Sometimes add: “Let us knock eggs so we may have a beautiful Easter next year as well, and after death meet each other again in heaven”. The other members of the family follow in turn, beginning with the elderly. According to popular belief, it is well to remember with whom you knocked first, because, if you happen to get lost in a forest, all you have to do is remember the person with whom you knocked eggs first on Easter, and you will find your way back. Lunch on the first day of Easter is a chance to reunite the family, following the entire ritual. On the Easter table you will always find, beside the red eggs, the green cheese, green onion and radish salad, kell and, of course, lamb steak. One of the oldest story about coloured eggs in Romania is of the Florentine secretary of Constantin Brancoveanu, Antonio Maria del Chiaro, who, around the year 1700, was amazed by the golden color of the dyed eggs from the Court of the Muntenian ruler. The colors used for dying eggs correspond to certain symbols: Red – the symbol of blood, sun, fire, love and joy of life. Black – absolute stability, eternity Yellow – light, youth, happiness, harvest Green – revival of nature, freshness, hope, fertility Blue – sky, health, vitality Violet – self control, patience, confidence in justice A long time ago, the eggs were dyed using vegetal colors, but today chemical dyes are more typical. Vegetal colors were prepared following old recipes, passed on from one generation to another, with a great variety of methods and techniques. The materials and utensils used in decorating the eggs are extremely diverse, ingenious and vary in the different regions of the country. In some areas people boil the eggs, in others, they make a small hole and suck out the contents. Decorative eggs are also made with colors in relief (Vrancea, Putna Sucevei), embellished with glass beads (Bucovina), of wood (Neamt), of clay (Corund-Harghita) or even of plastic (Bucovina). Wine Promoting Prestigious Landmark • The Tenth Annual International Wine Fair - VINVEST Timisoara From April 19 to 21, Timisoara will host the tenth edition of the International Wine Show VINVEST. For three days, the resident, the tourists, and a lot of guests from all over the country, will stopover at the Regional Business Center Timisoara to taste the best Romanian and international wines. The traditional fair VINVEST managed to position itself as a landmark on the Romanian market in promoting the wine industry. With each edition, the fair has increased its importance, while the number of exhibitors, visitors, events and partners has been growing constantly. This 10th Anniversary International Wine Fair VINVEST 2013 is scheduled at a suitable time, April 19-21, two weeks before Orthodox Easter, when, psychologically, the public has a consumer-oriented behavioral predisposition. THE COTROCENI PALACE

It is a part of the Cotroceni National Museum. The Cotroceni Palace, church and monastery reﬂect a three-century old history that interweaves political, military, diplomatic, religious and cultural aspects, with the general evolution of Romanian society. The palace was built in the 17th century by the Prince Serban Cantacuzino. The Cotroceni National Museum exhibits a rich range of objects of art, illustrative of the Romanian decorative art. The Cantacuzino space is most suitable for organizing presentations of old art objects that can only outline the exceptional artistic accomplishments of a distant epoch.

It is the second largest administrative building in the world (after the Pentagon) in terms of all-out surface: 330,000 m2. It was built between 1984 and 1989 by a team of architects led by Anca Petrescu. and was destined for the members of the Communist Party; Besides oﬃces, Ceausescu planned to make personal living places, so the Palace’s surface would have been bigger. The museum is a component of the European family of Museums of Popular Art and Traditions. A national museum, under the Ministry of Culture’s patronage, it has an especially rich collection of objects, hosted in a Neo-Romanian style historical monumentbuilding close to Victoria Square. The museum developed a highly original museography honored in 1996 by receiving the EMYA – the European Museum of the Year Award. assage involves systematic stroking, rubbing and kneading of the soft tissues of the body in an eﬀort to induce a state of total relaxation. Despite some misconceptions, massage has become more accepted as a means to relieve minor physical problems. Although massage has sometimes been discredited, by advocates of modern medicine, it has recently been growing in acceptance. Massage has been shown to help maintain stability and enhance performance in nearly all of the body’s major systems. The muscular, skeletal, circulatory, nervous and respiratory systems can be positively aﬀected by massage. The theory behind massage is the relief of muscle tension, and that relaxation of the body will allow for a faster healing process. Massage can increase and improve circulation to damaged tissue areas. People who play sports know that it is important to stretch and relax muscles for peak performance, and the same idea underlies the massage process.

Perhaps the greatest benefit of massage, as any amateur can confirm, is the relaxing effect it can have on tense muscles. The smooth stroking motions and the kneading of muscles relieves tension, loosens joints and improves circulation, all of which are beneficial for good health. Of course it is recommended that people not replace necessary medical treatment with a massage. Sometimes medical conditions that could easily be cured by a simple medical treatment are identified as a simple tight muscle or something similar. Although massage does have positive medical benefits, in most cases it is not a replacement for modern medicine. The history of massage dates back almost as far as recorded history. For thousands of years some form of massage or the “laying on of hands” has been used to helpl the sick. For the ancient Greeks and Romans, massage was one of the principal methods of healing and relieving pain. MUST SEE IN BUCHAREST THE VILLAGE MUSEUM

Nestled on the shore of the Herastrau Lake, the museum displays 85 peasant homes, barns, churches and mills relocated there from all over Romania. Tall-roofed Transylvanian houses with beautifully crafted shingles sit alongside rustic wooden churches to form a unique neighborhood. The overall impression is that Romanian peasants take great pride in their work and homes. Everyday accessories: tools, butter-churns, hay forks, beer kegs and clothes are displayed inside the house. The museum is hosted by the former Royal Palace and is the most representative art gallery in Romania. The Royal Palace was the official residence of the Romanian kings. Its current facade was given the finishing touches in 1937 when Carol II was King of Romania. The National Art Museum Palace is located in downtown Bucharest (in the so-called Revolution Square). The Palace displays an extensive collection of European and Romanian fine art. The European Art Gallery offers an overview of teh most important artistic movements that marked art history from the early Rennaissance till the first decades of teh 20th century. The Romanian Modern Art Gallery illustrates the development of Romanian fine arts from the first decades of the 19th century till the second half of the 20th century. During the early Middle Ages, Bucharest became a commercial center; important enough to enable the XIV century princes to build the Princely Court – nowadays known as “The Old Court” - which formed the development core of the medieval town. The ﬁrst written mention of the name of “Bucharest” dates back to September 20, 1459: it appears on a document issued from the chancellery of the famous Prince Vlad Tepes (the Impaler). By the year 1599, a new Princely Court was built. Matei Basarab (1632-1654) renovated the Old Court. By 1640, because the prince’s relations with the Turks worsened, Matei Basarab moved his Capital back to the town of Targoviste. Bucharest still remained a princely residence. In May 1654, Prince Constantin Serban Basarab (1654-1658), Matei Basarab’s successor, left for Targoviste after a rebellion of his mercenary troops, and he ordered the Old Court to be set of ﬁre. The Old Royal Court is an outdoor site that can be visited any time. THE ROMANIAN ATHENAEUM

Is a concert hall in the center of Bucharest and a landmark of the Romanian capital city. Opened in 1888, the ornate, domed, circular building is the city’s main concert hall and home of the “George Enescu” Philarmonic and of the George Enescu annual international music festival. It has the aspect of a Greek temple with Ionic columns at the entrance. The wonderful interior with round frescoes depicts important events in Romania’s history. Extensive reconstruction and restoration work has been conducted in 1992 by a Romanian construction company and restoration painter Silviu Petrescu, saving the building from collapse. Visiting hours: every day, unless concerts or rehearsals are held.

PIATA OBOR 5D : A huge covered market located behind the Bucur Obor Department Store at the intersection of Calea Mosilor and Calea Stefan cel Mare. Although the selection of goods is big, the market is crowded and appears dirty. Watch your pockets and bags. If you’re looking for a truly Romanian market experience, this is your spot. Pets, including aquarium supplies, are available, as are fishing needs (including live worms, poles, lures). Wooden and woolen goods, ceramics, clothing, as well as plants cut and growing, are available. A large pedigree dog and cat market at least once a month on the street nearest Mosilor is a fun experience. PIATA 1 MAI 5D : Located near La Fourmi on Ion Mihalache Blvd. It is a small market but has a good selection of fruit, vegetables and flowers. As with all the above markets, clothing, shoes, and household items for cleaning and cooking may also be found. Honey and other bee byproducts are a national pride of Romania and are found at all of these outdoor markets. PIATA DOROBANTILOR 5D : Located indoors on Calea Dorobantilor north of Calea Stefan cel Mare. It offers produce and flowers. The quality is better than Amzei, but the prices are olso higher. We are still hopeful that Romania will be admitted into the Schengen area by the end of this year, which will remove the last travel restrictions, and enable some of our young people to head to more promising parts of Europe. While the “brain drain” will have a longer-term impact, in the meantime, the remittances may help. Hopefully our new government can pull together and address the remaining concerns blocking our entrance.

At the same time, Romania continues to suffer economically, not only because of our internal difficulties, but the travails of our immediate neighbors. Bulgaria is suffering, and of course we all know about Greece, and now Cyprus. While the healthier Western/ Northern countries are busy bailing out our neighbors, they have little interest in investing in Romania. We are in the wrong ‘neighborhood’.
