Decent Expectations In December, before the winter holidays, Romania is magical, with more white spots than black ones. What should we do with the reality, however, the one in which we do not feel so much magic? What do we do? Because we, the people, feel increasingly worse, and increasingly abandoned. And we don’t really understand why, although abandoned, we pay big salaries to a group of leaders who are not able to produce anything. It’s as if, in a company you hired a high salaried manager, who ends up leading the company into bankruptcy and insists he be nominated as liquidator of the company, to let him take what’s left... For the normal inhabitant of Bucharest, mid-range, who works diligently at his job and eventually meets his half during the weekend, the end of this year comes as a blessing. We end another torturous year, but Romanians still have hope. Now they hope that it cannot be worse than 2011! And that, perhaps in the last few meters before the precipice, “someone will change something” in the direction of the wheels so that they will begin to work as a mechanism! A decent mechanism, for our reasonable expectations. So, that Romania could begin to function normally, since it seems to us that at this moment it is the opposite... Now it’s December and January will follow quickly, a period of the year when all Romanians are acustome to make and receive large or small gifts. And the city will fill with shoppers, mostly in search of special offers. The crowds in the city may provide arguments for the government, as for the foreigners visiting Bucharest. They will all say, look Romanians still have money! Without waiting for the retail statistics, which will come as soon as mid-January, and will confirm statistically; Romanians really do not have any more money! So you, the leaders, should help (or let!) them make honestly more money, at least in 2012! And this for real, not magically!

In mid-November, General Mayor Sorin Oprescu, with Ecaterina Andronescu, rector of the Polytechnic University, attended a tree planting ceremony in the University park. On this occasion, the oﬃcials showed some of the environmental projects undertaken by the Municipality which seek to bring Bucharest into conformity with other European capitals in terms of environmental factors. “As we promised, I want to do all those things that will provide Bucharest residents living conditions similar to those in other European cities in terms of the environment. Not only planting trees, but also with the green roof project, which I have already started, with the project that will develop the Dambovita banks, and the Esplanade. I hope that, slowly, we’ll manage to change,” said Bucharest General Mayor. The planting is part of the “Capital Increase Green” program, initiated in 2009. With this latest event in 2011, 390 trees have been planted –the tree species include linden, oak, birch, milled and 100 thugs in the Polytechnic University Park, 333 plantings of pine, maple, ash, Japanese locust, oak, beech, hornbeam, and 260 rose bushes in Mogosoaia Park and 26 catalpas and 60 thejas at the School for the Hearing Impaired. The last two plantings were supported by students and teachers under the guidance of environmental inspectors.

Adamo, who sings in nine languages, has sold over 100 million records worldwide throughout his career. After the opening on December 3, the exhibition is open to the public until December 22. This is the first exhibition of the series 8 Femmes. The artists aim to explore the willingness of women to be different and this search of the personality will be found in the outer image details. They sought to personalize the materials used in the costumes and accessories through painting, sculpture and basketry. The inspiration for this exhibition is the movie with the same name, created by the director François Ozon, after the screenplay of Robert Thomas. Ramona Stanca Virtosu is a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts, Bucharest, Faculty of History and Theory of the Art, Department Photo Video - computer image processing. She made the scenery for film and advertising. Among the projects on which she worked are the films: Boborul, 2003, and A Brief History, 2007, both directed by Radu Vasile Igazsag, La drumul mare, 2007, directed by Gabriel Sirbu, Afterimage, 2007, directed by Catalin Leescu. Besides these, she also made theater costumes. Her first solo exhibition, Sculpture in the wool, took place in February this year at the Mask Theatre, where she exhibited works of textile art. Laura Cherciu Avramescu is a graduate of the same academy and faculty, Department of Conservation and Restoration of the artwork. She is licensed in Conservation and Restoration of the paintings on wood. She participated in numerous group and personal exhibitions, including the latest from Elite Prof Art gallery: Fall Colors and Traveling the World, and at the art fair Strasbourg ST-ART in November 2010, along with other artists, danaartgallery.ro members. 2

This years edition appears to be a very successful one, maybe the most beautiful of all. The main attraction is the nativity scene, a life-sized masterpiece crafted from lime wood. Not even the world-famous Vienna Christmas Market has such a beautiful nativity scene. The 2011 Sibiu Christmas Market was inaugurated with a live concert Fuego, who, once again, proved to be one of Romania’s most beloved Christmas carols singer. A few thousand

The largest Christmas market in the Capital is in Cismigiu Park. By the eve of the Holy Feasts, the park alleys will be animated by fairy tale characters, while the central kiosk will be transformed into Santa’s House, where the children will have all sorts of surprises. On the scene located near the Cismigiu rink, one of the largest in the Capital, will present theater performances for children, carols and folkloric music, but also folk, pop and rock concerts.

real estate According to real estate experts, average prices demanded by homeowners in Bucharest continued to decline this year. The real-estate sites calculated different percentages for discounts, and some stated the decrease was between 1 to 2.1 %, others 4-8 %. imobiliare.ro released a report according to which, the home prices fell by 2.1 % for studios, while for other types of housing the cuts were lower, reaching 1.8 % for those with two rooms, only 1 % for the three rooms and 1.7 % for four rooms. Some of the individual buyers even stopped the transactions in Bucharest and started to look in other locations. Predeal is one of the main holiday destinations for Romanians both in summer and in the winter. For this reason, the Italian company Edilizia decided to invest in the development of the real estate complex Clabucet Residence, offering tourists an alternative to hotel accommodation. “The decision to invest in a building complex in a very popular tourist area was influenced by the desire to give tourists the option to purchase a holiday home at bargain prices. Invest in New Markets Forum

The Serbian Tourism Business Forum took place in Belgrade for the first time, November 24-26, organized by the National Corporation for Tourism Development, a governmental body working under the Ministry of Economy and regional development. The forum was a success not only for the Serbian tourism, but for the whole Balkans region which should have a common direction developing the tourism sector. Frederic Pierret, UNWTO Executive Director, who spoke at the official opening of the forum highlighted some of these directions

The Plenary Panel Discussion of the Forum “Invest in New Markets” was opened by Nebojsa Ciric, the Minister of Economy and Regional Development, who presented the current macroeconomic situation and investment climate, as well as the need for development and attracting new investments in tourism. Goran Pitic from the Foreign Investors Council presented the situation in the Serbian tourism from the perspective of foreign investors as well as from economic aspects. Ranko Tepavcevic and Azat Kadyrov, representing Kazan Universiade 2013 communicated the importance of correlation between tourism and infrastructure on the example of development projects for the forthcoming Universiade in Kazan. Djordje Igric, Lawyer, talked in his speech about the need to harmonize legal frameworks to improve the investment climate in tourism. Christos Tsemperas, Grand Casino Belgrade GM, spoke about their development plans, and the success of this group in Serbia so far. An extremely important part of the Forum was the panel on successful investments in Serbian tourism. The

Nikola Avram from MK Mountain Resort, Tomislav Momirovic from Mona, Zivorad Vasic from Hotel Continental Belgrade, Vesna Vlatkovic from A hotel, Svetislav Popadic from JP Stara Planina, Gerhard Reiter from Vamed, Goran Gabric from Park Palic and Slobodan Vucicevic from Silver Lake Resort spoke in this part of the panel. They presented their experiences in tourism, investment processes and models to improve business eﬃciency. The panel Hotels and Urban Development has been moderated by Bojan Zecevic, Professor of the Faculty of Economics, University of Belgrade. On the example of the Old Mill, Soravia presented its investments and Michael Widmann from PKF Hotelexperts GmbH also presented their vision of success for the hotel business in Serbia. Dietmar Reindl from Falkensteiner presented plans and course of development of its new hotel, whose construction began recently in New Belgrade.

Dejan Djordjevic from ESTA Holding talked about Serbia from the perspective of Ukrainian investors. At the Mayors’ Forum, municipalities’ local conditions and resources in tourism were discussed. Future tourism and infrastructure projects in several towns have been associates with the limitations which are encountered when investing in tourism. The final panel of the Forum was dedicated to companies that represent leading brands in tourism. This highly interactive panel was moderated by Silvija Lovreta from Horwath HTL Belgrade. Hilton, Hyatt, Rezidor Hotel Group, Marriott International and Steigenberger Hotel Group Germany presented their plans, operations, conditions and problems faced when investing in regional markets. Regional heads of development of the world’s best-known chains presented perspectives and possibilities of expanding business in the region, each of them stating their plans to open a hotel in Belgrade. The third day of the Forum, the delegates moved to Sremski Karlovci, in Vojvodina, one of the successful rural destinations in Serbia. Willibald Kaltenbrunner from Denkstatt presented the importance of environmental practices in tourism on the specific case of Serbia. Djurdjica Simcic from Mali Losinj Tourism Organization presented the formula for success of rural tourism on the example of this Croatian island. The duo from Spain, Isabel Lawrence Marin and Angel Garcia Puertas, emphasized the importance of restoration and transformation of historical buildings for rural tourism development. They also pointed out the importance of a network for reservations and the common mistakes made in rural tourism, mentioning as an example building of sports centers, which have no purpose in development of this domain of tourism. Karlo Puskarica presented the joint UN program MDG-F Serbia, closing this first edition of the Serbian Tourism Business Forum, Belgrade 2011.

Few of us have the courage to follow our childhood dreams. As we grow up and we reach a certain age, at which everybody around us demands a certain level of maturity, we look behind our shoulder resigned and watch as a part of our soul fades away, while we demand safety and we try to come up to everyone’s expectations. If this seams to be the story of almost each and everyone of us, there are some lucky few who have the strength to pursue the path that felt so close to their heart, flourishing in the same time with them. The story of Adriana Delia Barar, a young Timisoara-based fashion designer seams to be that of a typical little girl, as she recalls spending her childhood years sewing small dresses so her dolls could be better dressed than those of her friends. Her mother was pleased to find this passion in her and therefore, helped her child to develop this hobby, offering her the great satisfaction of tailoring her own path. After attending tailoring classes when she was only 11, as she reached her highschool years she took a 3 year course in Fashion Design at the Popular School of Arts. As a sign of maturity and also as a confirmation of her own ambition, Adriana offered herself the best gift on her 18th birthday as she founded her company and through this step offering her activity a legal and official status. The next step was enrolling at the Faculty of Visual Arts and Design at the Western University in Timisoara. Beyond the theoretical and practical knowledge, her college years also taught her the necessity of become a self-taught as she realized that the design activity is also sustained by a constant dedication reflected in research and work. The young designer dearly recalls her first collection, realized as she reached the age of 13. Even though it didn’t follow the traditional elements of a true collection, it was highly appreciated by those around her, who gave great credit to some dresses tailored above expectations by a child. Adriana’s accomplishment as a designer came step by step as she presented her collections during important fashion events, concerts, charity events, graduation or junior proms, besides her own season shows. A very important step in building a career was attending Novotel Hotel’s Fashion Brunch, where BAD Style was chosen the designer of the month of the particular edition. Recalling her path, she sees each one of these events as materializing her dream of becoming a fashion designer, challenging her to greater creative ambitions. Her casual-elegant style with a Rockish tinge is inspired by music, shows, nature, by daily-life scenes and by people that come across her sight, who can offer her the creative challenge of making her imagine how she would dress them. After getting to know Adriana, one might say that inspiration is very accessible to her as she turns towards relaxing and fulfilling hobbies such as photography, going to concerts, traveling, gardening, driving and practicing sports, Nevertheless Adriana finds a great inspiration inside her thoughts and feelings, relying of her instinct in valuing her creativity. Adriana’s creations are dedicated to those who dare to wear garments that represent their personalities and highlight their best features. The young designer believes that attitude and the way she wears her clothes are the best signs to reveal a woman’s self-confidence, increasing in a way her chances to succeed in life. The young designer sees a very strong relationship between fashion and two of her greatest passions, music and photography, considering their very deep influences in constructing trends and iconic images. Adriana’s unique perspective implies a styling exercise in order to suggest the public how a certain collection can be valued by matching its pieces into various images. Since its founding in 2005, BAD Style gained important exposure in both local and national printed press and TV programs, having its garments featured in ladies’ and fashion magazines. Managing to build a promising brand in such a short time and very important, at a very young age makes Adriana an inspiration for many Fashion Design students who dream of presenting their collections on the catwalk. Adriana notices with regret that many of those who dispose of considerable amounts of money choose this path only as a fad ending in being considered a true designer by the public who unfortunately does not know how to select fashion. Young struggling designers face the lack of awareness in a label-oriented society and also the trend among the public of choosing an inspiration model of public figures promoted on TV. In spite of this inconvenience, Adriana believes that a young designer shouldn’t give up on his dream and continue to work hard, having constantly in mind that success doesn’t come over night, being something that requires effort and dedication. Beyond her personal ambition regarding the development of BAD Style, Adriana dreams of placing the Western Romania into the fashion spotlight so that Transilvania-based designers can impose a certain style without moving to Bucharest. 8

Art in the US Embassy, in Print The U.S. Embassy released recently a booklet about the American art works exhibited in the residence of U.S. Ambassador Mark Gitenstein. The brochure provides information about and photographs of thirteen paintings, made of eight American artists chosen by the U.S. Ambassador and his wife, Libby.

“The art we have chosen for the Ambassador’s Residence in Bucharest is from the southern United States. We selected these landscapes for several reasons: ﬁrst, my wife, Libby, and I wanted to feature American art that reminded us of the terrain and culture of Romania. We wanted to show Romanians visiting our home in Bucharest that the United States, especially the southern United States, looks a lot like Romania,” writes ambassador Gitenstein in the prologue of the brochure. “The rich verdant hills and mountains of Transylvania remind us of the mountains of the western Carolinas (particularly in the works by Phil Garrett and Carl Blair). Indeed, this was surely one of the reasons that the producers of the movie Cold Mountain chose Romania as the site for shooting this 2003 classic. The works by the Bayou Art Colony (especially those of Carlos Alpha “Shiney” Moon) reminded us of the stark beauty of the Danube Delta. The fragile Mandy’s Shanty could be a Roma house and Day’s Haul could as easily be in Sulina, at the mouth of the Danube as it is in Bayou La Batre, Alabama. Second, this exhibition is built around two men who inﬂuenced me, both southerners. Mark B. Coplan of Columbia, South Carolina, was a dear friend of mine and Libby’s whom we met while attending Duke University. Mark was the premier art collector of his generation in South Carolina. His unexpected death in 2002 not only shocked us but cut short the life of a man of culture and warmth, who would undoubtedly have become one of America’s great collectors. Although the works by Blair, Garrett, Hutty, and Williams were not part of Mark’s collection, the artists were among

his favorites. The second man, Carlos Alpha “Shiney” Moon was an artist from my home town of Florala, Alabama. I grew up seeing his paintings in homes in Florala. Indeed, his wife, Sadie, gave us a “Shiney” as a wedding gift. I paint water colors in my spare time and it wasn’t until I saw this selection of originals hanging in our living room in Bucharest, that I realized what a subconscious impact his coastal landscapes had on my taste in art. To me these landscapes of his, so like the Danube Delta, are “home.” These similarities of terrain, as well as the fact that I am Romanian-American, stand as evidence to all who visit the Residence that our roots actually intertwine,” continued Ambassador Mark Gitenstein. Art in Embassies Program is managed by Art in Embassies - AIE Oﬃce, established within the State Department in 1963. AIE plays an essential role in public diplomacy activities of the American nation, with a mission to raise awareness of American culture. THE PARLIAMENT PALACE

It is the second largest administrative building in the world (after the Pentagon) in terms of all-out surface: 330,000 m2. It was built between 1984 and 1989 by a team of architects led by Anca Petrescu. and was destined for the members of the Communist Party; Besides oﬃces, Ceausescu planned to make personal living places, so the Palace’s surface would have been bigger. Feel the Rhythm There are an increasing amount of foreign people arriving in Bucharest to simply have fun and enjoy themselves. Many European travellers can testify that some of the greatest and cheapest nights can be had here. Lipscani, the historic centre of the town has witnessed a recent revival with many of the older clubs being refurbished or completely rebuilt. Many of these new venues would not seem out of place in Paris or London. Like the most International cities, Bucharest has a good selection of bars, clubs, cafes, theatres, casinos and many other places of entertainment. Other Bucharest districts are also quite animated, with lots of people on the street late into the night. If you want to have a perfect night, you can start with a romantic dinner in one of the restaurants around the old centre. “Caru` cu bere”, for instance, is one of the most representative restaurants of our capital, it is a true living legend and also one of the oldest beer houses in Bucharest. It was opened for the ﬁrst time in 1879 and it is one of the few places in Bucharest where it seems that nothing has changed. After that, you can continue with a show or play at Rapsodia Theatre. Then… enjoy your night in a club or in a bar with your friends. There is a wide variety of bars and pubs scattered all over the city and it is not always easy to choose between Irish, English, Latino or the more exotic among the range of watering holes available. There are also traditional Romanian bars and restaurants. Cyber cafes are becoming

ever more popular in Bucharest and these are generally open quite late. There are plenty of nightclubs catering for all tastes and smart dress is not necessary, jeans are acceptable. Clubs and bars serve alcohol until 5 or 6 in the morning and the minimum age for drinking is 18. Despite much recent renovation a real sense of history remains, many of the older inns or taverns have become pubs and clubs, but walking around this area can still transport you into the past, to the true beginnings of the city and its nickname, ‘Little Paris’. Now you will find here coffee shops, restaurants and bars where you can drink a hot tea or a good coffee.

You can choose a bar where you will listen to traditional Romanian singers like Maria Tanase. The atmosphere is quite calm here in the night, perfect for relaxing with friends. As far as clubs are concerned, from electro to live rock, you will ﬁnd anything you wish in Bucharest! They are the best and their secret is that they never let you stop dancing, all night you feel so good that you believe you are the greatest dancer in the world. lthough there are some important aspects that have not changed in the Romanian Capital in the last years (sidewalks are still not clean, there are no bicycle tracks, there isn’t enough lighting on the streets, nor enough parking places), Bucharest occupies the 14th place among the top of European cities which are preferred by the citizens of other countries who live there, as Roxana Lupu tells in her article in “Evenimentul Zilei”, titled “The Capital, More and More Loved by Expats”. The city is more and more appreciated thanks to the quality of security, housing and health and this is the reason why expats want to work and even settle here, the same thing being true for another East-European city, Bratislava, the Capital of Slovakia, as shown in a study by ECA International, a Human Resource company. “There are better restaurants, more concerts by international stars, more

shopping. Life has improved considerably”, says Tom Murray, who came to Romania 15 years ago and has become a successful businessmanin the textile industry. He also believes that, even if prices have gone up a lot recently, life is still cheaper here than it is in Western Europe or in the United States, and Bucharest has the charm of a European Capital. Nevertheless, in Tom’s opinion the cost of basic goods is a major problem. The things used by the middle class now carry the price of luxury goods, and the cost of utilities has increased dramatically. For the Romanians, as well as for the expats, the quality of life depends on the wages they earn. If the wage is one of thousands of Euros per month, they can say they live well, but if it is a middle income one, even an expat faces the tough realities of daily life, thinks Tom: “If you have money, you can do anything you want in Bucharest: you hire people to manage your daily business, you eat in the best restaurants, you travel overseas or to other Romanian cities on weekends.” Nevertheless, B Bucuresti what, where, when

he thinks that Bucharest cannot be considered the most sophisticated European Capital yet. Another businessman, Christopher Troxler, who has lived in Romania for five years, fell in love with Bucharest as soon as he got here. “It was love at first sight”, he says. “I simply liked the atmosphere.” Copenhagen, the Capital of Denmark, holds the first place among the preferences of expats, shows the study mentioned above. In the top ten places are cities in Switzerland and Germany, such as Geneva, Basel and Bern, and respectively Dusseldorf, Bonn and Munich. The expats coming from Asia have their own top list: Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra, in Australia, as well as two regions, from Japan, Kobe and Yokohama. Hong Kong and Shanghai, in China, occupy places 15 and 78, respectively. In the Middle East, expats prefer Manama, the Capital of Bahrein, and Dubai and Muscat. Bagdad, the Iraqui Capital, holds the last place in the world, number 300, because of the precarious security level.

Despite some misconceptions, massage has become more accepted as a means to relieve minor physical problems. Although massage has sometimes been discredited, by advocates of modern medicine, it has recently been growing in acceptance. Massage has been shown to help maintain stability and enhance performance in nearly all of the body’s major systems. The muscular, skeletal, circulatory, nervous and respiratory systems can be positively aﬀected by massage. The theory behind massage is the relief of muscle tension, and that relaxation of the body will allow for a faster healing process. Massage can increase and improve circulation to damaged tissue areas. People who play sports know that it is important to stretch and relax muscles for peak performance, and the same idea underlies the massage process.

Perhaps the greatest benefit of massage, as any amateur can confirm, is the relaxing effect it can have on tense muscles. The smooth stroking motions and the kneading of muscles relieves tension, loosens joints and improves circulation, all of which are beneficial for good health. Of course it is recommended that people not replace necessary medical treatment with a massage. But now, when everything is compacted into smaller and smaller time units, the appearance of things changes daily, and the idea of spare time is more and more vague and almost about to be extinct. MUST SEE IN BUCHAREST THE VILLAGE MUSEUM

Nestled on the shore of the Herastrau Lake, the museum displays 85 peasant homes, barns, churches and mills relocated there from all over Romania. Tall-roofed Transylvanian houses with beautifully crafted shingles sit alongside rustic wooden churches to form a unique neighborhood. The overall impression is that Romanian peasants take great pride in their work and homes. Everyday accessories: tools, butter-churns, hay forks, beer kegs and clothes are displayed inside the house. This museum can take a whole day to explore and, in ﬁne weather, families settle down for picnics in the scenic grounds. The museum is hosted by the former Royal Palace and is the most representative art gallery in Romania. The Royal Palace was the official residence of the Romanian kings. Its current facade was given the finishing touches in 1937 when Carol II was King of Romania. The National Art Museum Palace is located in downtown Bucharest (in the so-called Revolution Square). The Palace displays an extensive collection of European and Romanian fine art. The European Art Gallery offers an overview of teh most important artistic movements that marked art history from the early Rennaissance till the first decades of teh 20th century. The Romanian Modern Art Gallery illustrates the development of Romanian fine arts from the first decades of the 19th century till the second half of the 20th century. During the early Middle Ages, Bucharest became a commercial center; important enough to enable the XIV century princes to build the Princely Court – nowadays known as “The Old Court” - which formed the development core of the medieval town. The ﬁrst written mention of the name of “Bucharest” dates back to September 20, 1459: it appears on a document issued from the chancellery of the famous Prince Vlad Tepes (the Impaler). By the year 1599, a new Princely Court was built. Matei Basarab (1632-1654) renovated the Old Court. By 1640, because the prince’s relations with the Turks worsened, Matei Basarab moved his Capital back to the town of Targoviste. Bucharest still remained a princely residence. In May 1654, Prince Constantin Serban Basarab (1654-1658), Matei Basarab’s successor, left for Targoviste after a rebellion of his mercenary troops, and he ordered the Old Court to be set of ﬁre. The Old Royal Court is an outdoor site that can be visited any time. THE ROMANIAN ATHENAEUM

Is a concert hall in the center of Bucharest and a landmark of the Romanian capital city. Opened in 1888, the ornate, domed, circular building is the city’s main concert hall and home of the “George Enescu” Philarmonic and of the George Enescu annual international music festival. It has the aspect of a Greek temple with Ionic columns at the entrance. The wonderful interior with round frescoes depicts important events in Romania’s history. Extensive reconstruction and restoration work has been conducted in 1992 by a Romanian construction company and restoration painter Silviu Petrescu, saving the building from collapse. Visiting hours: every day, unless concerts or rehearsals are held.

PIATA OBOR 5D : A huge covered market located behind the Bucur Obor Department Store at the intersection of Calea Mosilor and Calea Stefan cel Mare. Although the selection of goods is big, the market is crowded and appears dirty. Watch your pockets and bags. If you’re looking for a truly Romanian market experience, this is your spot. Pets, including aquarium supplies, are available, as are fishing needs (including live worms, poles, lures). Wooden and woolen goods, ceramics, clothing, as well as plants cut and growing, are available. A large pedigree dog and cat market at least once a month on the street nearest Mosilor is a fun experience. PIATA 1 MAI 5D : Located near La Fourmi on Ion Mihalache Blvd. It is a small market but has a good selection of fruit, vegetables and flowers. As with all the above markets, clothing, shoes, and household items for cleaning and cooking may also be found. Honey and other bee byproducts are a national pride of Romania and are found at all of these outdoor markets. PIATA DOROBANTILOR 5D : Located indoors on Calea Dorobantilor north of Calea Stefan cel Mare. It offers produce and flowers. The quality is better than Amzei, but the prices are olso higher. Out of season exotic fruits and vegetables can be found here. There are several other stores in this area. The meat market inside is particularly good.

Dear Reader, Whew! We made it. Crystal Publishing Group, as a company, and Romania, as a country have made it through another very diﬃcult year. So did the European Union, though shakily, with a lot fear and trepidation. Speaking as a small local businessman, I am glad that we have not yet joined the Eurozone. I am writing this, sitting at a table, in a pair of shorts, and no shirt. The fan is going, and it’s hot and humid. Local temperature of about 28/29 degrees, while you are reading it, hopefully inside a room which is nice and warm, but with the weather outside being winter. I will be joining your shivering, as I will come to Bucharest just before Christmas, and am already planning on how to stay warm. I am on the island of Bougainville, in Papua New Guinea, on the other side of the world. It is an interesting juxtaposition. Of course, today, many people in Romania have no jobs, no money and are struggling to survive. But, there are lights on the streets, and we have light and heat in our apartments, unless we have not paid a bill, and public transportation is good and inexpensive. We have become a total consumer society. The Shopping Mall has become, not a place where you go to buy something, but

rather a destination in itself. We no longer say “I am going to buy a shirt” today we say, “I am going to the Mall.” Our supermarket shelves are stuffed with endless bags of corn chips, potato chips and the like, all relatively expensive, and most filled with empty calories. The island of Bougainville went through a 10 year ‘crisis’ and blockade. From 1990 until about 2000. The infrastructure was destroyed. There is no electricity unless you can afford a generator and fuel is very expensive. There are no supermarkets, just local versions of the neighborhood “magazin alimentar”. Most people live a basic agrarian life, and bring fresh fruits and vegetables to markets, selling areas alongside a road. Limited public transportation, similar to our ‘maxi-taxi’, but less comfortable. The weather is always between 24°C nights and 30°C day. The sun comes up about 5:30 and life begins. The sun goes down about 5:30 and most activities end. Given the climate, you do not need clothing, a simple roof over your head to keep out the rain works. Yet, people live here, go to church, raise families and send their children to school. There is one TV channel, and most people have no TV, there are no movie theaters or restaurants. The one thing uniting the two cultures is the cell phone. Everyone has one, though the challenge is to keep it charged. As I look forward to my Christmas visit to wintery Bucharest, I ask myself, which way of life is better?
