Great end-June in Bucharest for music lovers! How to choose first, how big should be your pocket? When the entire month were also other concerts. Julio Iglesias delighted in Bucharest the thousands of fans! They came in large numbers across the country and even from other countries (the Spanish community in Bucharest signing first present), to show their idol the appreciation they have for decades for him. The fans sang along with Julio the hits that have made history! Baila Morena, La Carretera, La Gotta Fria and other famous songs could be heard at Zone Arena in a concert full of romance and nostalgia! With elegance, modesty and his unmistakable voice, the artist sang and danced for nearly two hours. He even spoke in Romanian. The audience enjoyed all the songs from the playlist and enjoyed every line and every rhythm. The slow songs have moved them, while the rhythmic songs made them dance, forgetting that they are to a concert not in a club. Latin blood, which Julio referenced to one point, prevailed. “I always felt that the Romanians have the same blood as me. You are Latins. You have wonderful women and a wonderful country. I love you! “ The artist has dedicated a couple of songs to his beloved people, no longer with us, Valeriu Lazarov, and Luciano Pavarotti, who recalled that he told him in one of the last discussions: “See you in Heaven!” ... Julio Iglesias has delighted us with songs from the new album - “1”, which has actually his most famous song, rewritten and re-mastered, with a modern and deeper sound. The next day, actually night, followed three magic hours with Guns N ‘Roses at Tuborg GreenFest powered by Rock the City. Guns N ‘Roses concert ended this year famous rock festival, Axl Rose’s band confirming its status of headliner of the festival. The famous rocker did not delay the meeting with his fans in Romania and had a great performance, with songs as Sweet Child O ‘Mine, Civil War, November Rain, Don’t Cry and other songs that made from Guns N ‘Roses a real rock music legend. In addition, they played some new songs, known only that they’ll appear on a future album, currently in progress. The recital ended with the band’s great songs Patience and Paradise City. The recital from the last day of the festival attracted over 15,000 spectators. Who they also sang and danced! In fact, June was the month in which the entire Bucharest sang and danced!

USA Embassy Promotes Green Energy U.S. Ambassador Mark Gitenstein and officials from the U.S. Embassy in Bucharest were present on June 7, at the inauguration of the first private project type Smart Grid in Romania, in ICCO Industrial Park, Ghimbav, Brasov county. Smart Grids use IT and telecommunications solutions for optimizing infrastructure and monitoring of production and electricity consumption. Smart Grids assist energy companies by balanced integration if the production in the network, including that from renewable sources-wind and solar. They provide to the network operators real time information to enable them to equilibrate the production, consumption and the supply of electricity, thus providing a flexible, stable and balanced system. ICCO Group from Brasov implemented micro-Smart Grid solutions provided by the U.S. company Lockheed Martin in the Ghimbav industrial park. Lockheed Martin solutions supply an efficient, reliable and stable energy system, which ensures integration of new production capacities, including those from renewable resources, with the existing, optimizing the energy demand. The integration of these capabilities is possible even if they are not connected to electricity. The project worth USD 12 million and integrates Tenksolar and Helios photovoltaic panels, and also wind turbines provided by Windstream Technologies.

The exhibition brought to the American public a Romania haunted by Western brands, as an illusion of freedom and luxury that communism. 28 works from the period 2010 to 2012 shows visitors a society driven by brands and images, from the perspective of socialistcapitalist artistic realism. The pop-art current, which originated in the ‘60s as an expression of a consumerist society in full expansion, also found its inspiration in the current cosmopolite context of the same mirage of images.

The paintings in the series “Invasion of Products” by the artist Eugene Al Pann seem at first true advertising of consumer products. The exhibition includes 75 pieces of wood carvings from the heritage of the National Gallery of NMAR, created in the period 1918 to 1999, by 22 artists, including: Hans Mattis-Teutsch, Milita Petrascu, Borgo Prund, Romul Ladea, Geza Vida, Constantin Aramescu, George Apostu, Peter Balogh, Gabriela Manole Adoc, Constantin Popovici, Ovidiu Maitec, etc. The exhibition is part of a recovery approach to a little known museum fund, unusual through the large number of artists selected to illustrate the subject. Limited to wood carving museum collections, the exhibition aims merely a chronological presentation of significant milestones in the evolution of the art techniques in Romania sculptor’s vision, during the twentieth century. The selected works illustrate some ways in which Romanian sculptors were reported to the modernist notion of “fidelity to the substance” imposed by Brancusi and his generation, using the technique of wood carving and polishing, involving direct work with sculptural material and the absence of intermediaries (students, apprentices, employees etc.). 2

STUFSTOCK 2012 @ VAMA VECHE JULY 23 - 29, VAMA VECHE Stufstock Festival will have its tenth, anniversary edition, from July 23 to 29, in Vama Veche, south of Mangalia. The oldest Romanian rock festival will be held for one week on the beach north of the village, produced by Revolver production house. The program will include the bands The Subways, Dub Incorporation and Dubioza Kolektiv. The Subways are an indie rock band originating in the United Kingdom which was launched in 2005. The song “Rock & Roll Queen” on their debut album was included on the soundtrack of some film productions. Dub Incorporation, founded in 1997 in Saint Etienne (France), was able to refresh the reggae style by addressing a clever mix of styles: dub, dancehall, ska and even rap, with Arab and African influences. Dubioza Kolektiv is a band from Bosnia and Herzegovina, known for its distinctive musical style that combines elements of hip hop, reggae, dub, rock and Bosnian folklore. With an explosive show and an extraordinary live appearance, Dubioza Kolektiv gained status as one of the best and most popular bands in Eastern Europe. For the headliners help, to increase adrenaline, will also come Romanian troops, the first three bands announced being: E.M.I.L., Coma and East Roots, important bands in the history of the Romanian music festival. Star Alliance 15th Anniversary 15 years ago, on May 14, an event took place which would forever change the landscape of commercial aviation. Five forward looking and like-minded CEOs took the bold decision to create the first ever multilateral airline alliance, the Star Alliance network. Founding carriers Air Canada, Lufthansa, Scandinavian Airlines, THAI and United all realised that with growing globalisation, the need for more international travel to a wider range of destinations would become increasingly important. As no airline on its own would be able to achieve this, these five airlines established the Star Alliance network with the aim of becoming the “Leading global airline alliance for the high value international traveller”. In 15 years the Alliance has grown from five airlines offering a combined total of 6,000 daily flights to 578 airports in 106 countries to a network of 25 airlines carrying more than 600 million passengers on 20,500 daily flights to 1,293 airports in 190 countries. To paraphrase the CEO of one of the member carriers: “If Star Alliance doesn’t fly there, you probably don’t want to go”. This growth has been achieved by a combination of adding airlines to the Alliance and by providing customer benefits which on a global scale an airline cannot offer on its own. Examples are through-check-in, mileage accrual and redemption, Star Alliance Gold and Silver benefits and Alliance wide fare products.

InterRail at its 40th Anniversary 40 years of the InterRail European train pass The InterRail pass was first launched on March 1, 1972, to encourage youth travelers, aged 21 and under, to explore Europe. After the first year, over 85,000 European travelers took to the rails to explore Europe’s key cities and everywhere in between. This figure has steadily risen over the past four decades and in 2011 around 250,000 travelers hit Europe’s rails with an InterRail pass. Some 40 years ago, the original InterRail pass opened up the rail networks of 22 European countries to pass holders; this has since increased to 30 countries with the pass now offered to all ages. The InterRail pass permits unlimited travel on most trains within the 30 participating countries during a range of validity periods. Back in 1972 Europe was in a rather different state to what it is now; the Cold War was at its height, the Berlin Wall divided east and west and a single currency was the last thing being discussed by politicians. Travelers had no smart phone from which to research their destinations and no Facebook to ask questions and share their experiences. Instead they had to rely on serendipity and tips from fellow travelers to get them to Europe’s treasures. Starting 1990, Eastern Europe opened up to the adventurous traveler wishing to reach the once-inaccessible communist countries cut off by the Iron Curtain. various electronic devices, it’s far easier to research places ahead of time, book a last minute bed in a hostel or arrange to meet up with other travelers along the way. The Residential Construction to Stabilize In 2011, the residential market in Central Europe fell to levels not seen since the beginning of the residential boom in the region. The situation is expected to improve slightly in the coming years. However, record results will not be reached soon. According to the Polish research company PMR latest report entitled “Residential construction market in Central Europe – Development forecasts for 2012-2014”, in 2011 the total number of homes completed in the six countries of the region was 242,205, nearly one third lower compared to residential construction’s peak years. The forecasts for 2012-2014 assume the region will recover slightly, although the results recorded in the peak period will not be reached in the coming years. Number of homes completed in Romania during the crisis fell less than in Hungary, or Bulgaria. The number of homes completed in Romania last year was 34% lower compared to the peak year, 2008, the fourth-largest drop among the six states evaluated in the report by the Polish research company PMR.

• CONSTRUCTIONS SEGMENT IN ROMANIA TO GROW ONLY FROM EU-FINANCED ROAD INFRASTRUCTURE PROGRAMS The EU- ﬁnanced projects for building roads in Romania will represent the main growth generator for the local construction market,

according to the same study delivered by PMR. According to the Polish research company estimations, the turnover in civil engineering and construction segment increased in 2011 by 16 percent and reached almost EUR 8.3 million. Especially due to the road infrastructure projects represented the main reason for this turnover last year in Romania and the trend can be kept until 2015. On the other hand, the residential and nonresidential constructions will keep their shadow trend and remain in diﬃcult situations, according to the research company. Romania still has available cohesion funds worth EUR 4.6 billion for transports to be attracted by projects and used by 2013 but the absorption rate for the transportation segment in Romania was estimated at 6 percent until March 2012. PMR states that Romania didn’t complete any highway construction project by 2011 and by end-2011 there were 434 ongoing construction highway segments in Romania, representing total investments worth EUR 4.1 billion. Some 200 km has to be completed this year, for projects which started 2-3 years ago. In the same time, the Polish study states that the Romanian Government has to select the general contractors for another 111 km of highways, totaling EUR 1.1 billion worth already secured ﬁnancing.

MediHelp – the Health Insurance Supermarket! ZAHAL LEVY Zahal Levy is the President of MediHelp International – the largest private health insurance provider in Central and Eastern Europe. MediHelp International is also the distribution manager of BUPA International in Romania, Hungary and Bulgaria. Gabriel Arsene (Bucuresti What, Where, When Magazine): More than six years have passed since our last interview. Zahal Levy (MediHelp International President): This was when I left Romania to my assignment in Euromedic International… Bucuresti WWW: Yes, you were leaving, but you promised you would come back regularly. Now you are back again and there are 15 years since you have been in Romania. Practically, your projects here have developed along with the changes in the medical system in Romania. Zahal Levy: Projects in my lead have influenced the Romanian health environment and made a real change. We were the first to offer emergency private medical care and ambulance services through SOS Medical. That was back in 1999. At that time, there was nobody else in emergency care on a private basis; the national system consisted of very old Dacia cars as ambulances and the waiting time for service was long. SOS was the first company to upgrade the standards in the system of emergency and healthcare for trauma medicine. That was, I believe, a remarkable change, a very important step forward for the Romanian medical emergency services. Later on, the market developed, the state ambulance service has very much improved also, and SOS Medical remained one of the leaders in the market. A second phase of my doings was the project with Euromedic International. In my lead, Euromedic was the first to establish highclass medical centres for imaging diagnostic in different cities in Romania. Top of the line centres were opened in Petrosani and 6 Bucuresti what, where, when

Arad (where we were the first private medical investment), in Bucharest (at Fundeni, where we have built the biggest imaging centre in Europe, at that time) and in Constanta (where the WHOLE medical centre had been brought to Romania on barges on the Danube River and was set-up in less than two months). These projects were a part of a big concept in the area of imaging diagnostic and service for customers. It actually gave everybody in Romania access to private medicine and due to the contract with Casa Nationala de Asigurari, you didn’t have to be rich in order to access this level of medical care. After this I have established MediHelp, the first in the country to offer private medical insurance with international cover. All in all, my activities in the last 15 years went along with dedicated local teams of managers. Some managers moved with me from a project to another and are with me for many years, although sometimes they complain that it is not always easy to work with me. But I’m proud of my contribution to the healthcare in Romania.

Bucuresti WWW: Would you agree that generally in Romania the medical system still needs managers? Zahal Levy: I would say it is not a top priority though. There are managers in this country and there are also good people who can become managers. The real problem of the Romanian healthcare system is the politics and lack of leadership. The policy (or no policy) that is dictated by the government does not put healthcare on top of the priorities list. The Government is still trying to refurbish old hospitals and to upgrade the old system with a very small budget. This is not going to work! It does not work anywhere else. The health expenditure per capita in this country is very low. Therefore, people cannot get proper healthcare and they start paying money out of their pockets in order to match up the service to their real needs. This is both illegal and immoral. It’s the national widespread crime that no government will deal with and no leader is ready to change.

It’s time that we all see that this cannot work anymore. Instead of pumping ”ﬁnancial- oxygen” into a failing and falling system, it’s better to promote the raise of proper medical insurance supported by tax laws. This is the only way out! This would encourage companies like us to sell private health insurance and would bring the increase of the market of private supplies of healthcare, such as hospitals, clinics, imaging and private medical institutions. People will be able to get high-class private healthcare, anywhere they chose, with the cover of an insurance policy. We will all pay private insurance fees and when we need medical care, we shall pay nothing and get access to top of the line medical institutions. All these will be possible with a reasonable monthly payment and not by bribery or other illegal practices. Europeans in the West live with private health insurance and on the private health providing sector. In these countries, the government is trying to reduce its involvement in the market of medical care. This is a leadership issue, a step in social maturity if you like. Unfortunately, Romania has not yet reached that level, and therefore I think, things are not getting better for the national healthcare system. ESCAPE THE HEAT The point of this article is to strategise a game plan for those stationed in this beautiful city for the next hot months. Summer in Bucharest can get hot. I don’t mean ‘warm’ or ‘humid’ or even ‘slightly uncomfortable’, I mean ‘blisteringly’ hot, ‘surface-of-the-sun’ hot. The easy answer may be to just position yourself directly under the nearest air conditioning unit and not move for a couple of months, but for many this is simply not an option. For the vast majority, daily actions such as work, shopping and socialising must continue. Many Bucharesters will simply head for the mountains or the Black Sea Coast. Bucharest, you see, sits in the middle of a large flat expanse of land with a mountainous region to the north and a coastal region to the east. The mountains, offering beautiful scenery and wildlife also offer a much cooler climate due to their positioning above sea level. The coastal region with its main town Constanta and its neighbouring holiday resort Mamaia, or going South Mangalia and the numerous connected resorts, offers a large expanse of sea front with cooling light winds and of course the ability to take a dip in the Black Sea to cool off from the ever prominent heat. There are endless terraces and bars to choose from to sit and relax with your favourite iced beverage and you’ll find Djs playing the latest music on the beach front whilst holiday makers frolic amidst the waves. Both options, be it the mountains or the beach contain numerous Hostels, Inns and Hotels which can rapidly become full over the weekends, so keep that in mind when planning an escape from the city. Whilst these two options ensure a relaxing weekend, they do not solve the problem of the weekday grilling you may feel you’re receiving in the city between Monday and Friday. Many warm summer evenings I’ve found myself in one of the city’s numerous shopping malls, not only do they offer a plethora of shops, cafes and restaurants, but they nearly all benefit from being very well ventilated, helping to keep you at a pleasant temperature. One trick that worked for me last year was to escape the heat of the afternoon by venturing to the cinema. Again, the majority of cinema screens at a very tolerant climate and I found it a great way to keep up with the endless stream of summer blockbuster films whilst not feeling like my blood was literally boiling in my veins. Another option is to head for the tranquillity of one of the city’s parks. Whilst there is no direct evidence that the temperature is any cooler than the street, the simple act of sitting under the shade of a tree, or on a terrace, can have wonderful results. My favourites are Cismigiu in the centre and Herastrau in the north of the city although Parcul Carol and Parcul Tineretului, both slightly south of Unirii Square, are equally cooling and attractive. If you try to meet a friend at a terrace, maybe Downtown, the so called historic centre, try to avoid the peak times (between 8-10 am and 5-7 pm) when overcrowding is common in all public transportation means. Bucharest certainly doesn’t need more cars on the road, but there is still a luxury in being able to travel with air conditioning while using the public transport, at the moment. Assuming you’ve escaped at least the worst of the heat and are sitting in a shaded café, bar or terrace, must be, ‘what to drink?’ What one drink could possibly quench your thirst whilst cooling you down? For this there can be only one answer, Romanian ‘Lemonade‘. You may find here the most refreshing, simple iced lemon beverage known to man. Once you’ve tried it you know there is no going back to your favourite brand of soda. Usually mixed by hand with fresh juice, the lemonade not only takes the sting out of the midday sun but also serves you up a generous dose of C vitamin. Scan the menu for popular alternatives such as lemonade served with mint, or often with orange and lime, delightful alternatives on the classic recipe and equally delicious. With these hints and tips it is possible to enjoy all Bucharest has to offer this summer, whilst maintaining a regular temperature and cheery disposition. And remember, if all else fails, head to the mountains or Greece, that’s where I’ll be! The Greek Tourism Organization and the National Association of Travel Agencies in Romania recently signed a partnership which aims to increase the tourist flow in both directions. Recently, Christina Efthimiou, E.O.T. Bucharest Director and Corina Martin, ANAT President invited us to a meeting to promote Greece in terms of “gastronomy”. The municipality of Delphi recently united several regions: Amfissa, Delphi, Desfina, Galaxidi, Itea, Gravia, Parnassos and Kallieon. Each region tells a different story and offers an array of tourist attractions. The regeneration plan of Harmaina began in the 1990s as a part of a wider plan to showcase the amphitheatric city of Amfissa as a major tourism thematic park. Under this initiative, numerous restoration projects took place including, the reconstruction of some old leather tanneries, the antique water supply system and the reconstruction and lighting of the alleys. Today, few tanneries still operate and Harmaina is a tranquil neighbourhood which exudes a special charm and warmth. I also got some sightseeing tips, that should visit the olive grove of Amfissa, a green and grey sea of over 1,5 million olive trees, the Archaeological Site of Delphi, a UNESCO ‘World Heritage Site’ where I may admire the Temple of Apollo, the Stadium and the theatre (6th – 4th Cent. BC), the Nautical Historical Museum of Galaxidi, with its gallery of authentic paintings of sailing vessels and famous nautical stamp collection or to climb Mount Giona (2,508 m), the highest mountain in central Greece. I also found out Delphi is 370 km south from Thessalonica or 180 km from Athens. I’ll tell you more when I’ll be back!

“Women on Matasari” Urban Street Festival

In the second edition of Women on Matasari Urban Festival, a project of Beneva association, the Bucharesters were challenged, on June 22-24, in a marathon of art and culture within an event that brought the spotlight on the female universe in full creative expansion. Festival changed the street’s common setting, with the help of the designers Alia Bakutayan and Daniel Tufis from Valdecor, the sidewalks became green with the support of Descult in Iarba company, and Matasari street have been ”flooded” with variety and color. For three days the street was the scene for talks about woman and her creativity through her own forms of expression – fine art, music, fashion, theater, innovation and reliability. On the evening of June 22, was presented the fashion collection “Where” signed by Wilhelmina Arz, complemented by accessories of her friend Cristina Batlan (Mussette) - a manifesto of style and elegance as a Decalogue of the 10 hidden desires in each woman. The ten voluntary models on the catwalk installed this time on the street have been Luana Ibaka, Maria Radu, Raluca Hagiu, Raluca Mandache, Rodica Lazarica, Roxana Ciuhulescu, Roxana Iliescu, Roxana Ionescu, Roxana Vancea and Sonia Argint, and we’ve admired them knowing that Laurent Tourette and Irina Mihaita have integrated them into the concept, together with the artistic floral interpretations by Madalina Mocanu Lazar. Wilhelmina Arz opened the festival Women on Matasari for the second consecutive year, now presenting her collection “Where?” / “Quo Vadis?” The collection’s idea - run, run continuously... run in heels, yes! ... run in a “gathered” lifetime, cycle, within 24 hours, run the loop... Quo Vadis? ... each of us dream to be different, elsewhere, otherwise, ... maybe if we look into ourselves, we have an answer and the solution, the roadmap! ... every girl dreams, naturally, to be loved, woman, spouse, mother ... dreaming / designing / wishing / succeeding! “Quo Vadis,” the Decalogue of the 10 hidden desires of each woman! .... Unsurprisingly, the musical leitmotif was Florin Chilian’s song “10”. I had the curiosity to search the Internet to see the places in the world where catwalks are installed directly on the street and I was surprised to find very few cities that dare, but any old neighborhood! Catwalk on the Street, Osborne Street in Newmarket, Auckland, New Zealand - an event also at its second edition gathered the fashion shows during the daylight, on a fashion street. Although still open to the public, the catwalk was sided by numerous seats for the VIP’s invited to the event. Maybe something closer to Matasari was only Fleurotica Catwalk in West Loop Neighborhood, 1044 W. Randolph, Chicago, festival of flowers and fashion! Returning on Matasari, also on June 22, the opening of the collective exhibition Pink Kitty Candy, has faced us with a mix of urban sentimentality not recommended to those with allergy to candy pink color, while Suie Paparude launched the event’s party at Matasari Home. July 23 and 24 evenings, brought on the great scene music with Travka, The Mono Jacks, Les Elephants Bizarres, Blue Nipple Boy, Moonlight Breakfast, Norzeatic and Khidja, We Singing Colours and Loungerie II groups. After concerts have been theatrical performances and short films projections from Next and Done in 60 seconds. On June 24, fun has been installed on the street, water fights’ fans have been cooled with cold showers on Matasari, Stories Magazine being responsible for the Matasari Lectures, with outstanding guests - Florin Iaru and Stelian Tanase. One street of the old Bucharest was full of life, with over 130 projects which came this year in the street. 10

THE COTROCENI PALACE

It is a part of the Cotroceni National Museum. The Cotroceni Palace, church and monastery reﬂect a three-century old history that interweaves political, military, diplomatic, religious and cultural aspects, with the general evolution of Romanian society. The palace was built in the 17th century by the Prince Serban Cantacuzino. The Cotroceni National Museum exhibits a rich range of objects of art, illustrative of the Romanian decorative art. The Cantacuzino space is most suitable for organizing presentations of old art objects that can only outline the exceptional artistic accomplishments of a distant epoch.

It is the second largest administrative building in the world (after the Pentagon) in terms of all-out surface: 330,000 m2. It was built between 1984 and 1989 by a team of architects led by Anca Petrescu. and was destined for the members of the Communist Party; Besides oﬃces, Ceausescu planned to make personal living places, so the Palace’s surface would have been bigger. The museum is a component of the European family of Museums of Popular Art and Traditions. A national museum, under the Ministry of Culture’s patronage, it has an especially rich collection of objects, hosted in a Neo-Romanian style historical monumentbuilding close to Victoria Square. The museum developed a highly original museography honored in 1996 by receiving the EMYA – the European Museum of the Year Award. The originality of the exhibiting style is continued in the Museum’s publications, in actions such as the Missionary Museum, the Village School, concerts, conferences and exhibition openings. MUST SEE IN BUCHAREST THE VILLAGE MUSEUM

Nestled on the shore of the Herastrau Lake, the museum displays 85 peasant homes, barns, churches and mills relocated there from all over Romania. Tall-roofed Transylvanian houses with beautifully crafted shingles sit alongside rustic wooden churches to form a unique neighborhood. The overall impression is that Romanian peasants take great pride in their work and homes. Everyday accessories: tools, butter-churns, hay forks, beer kegs and clothes are displayed inside the house. This museum can take a whole day to explore and, in ﬁne weather, families settle down for picnics in the scenic grounds. The museum is hosted by the former Royal Palace and is the most representative art gallery in Romania. The Royal Palace was the official residence of the Romanian kings. Its current facade was given the finishing touches in 1937 when Carol II was King of Romania. The National Art Museum Palace is located in downtown Bucharest (in the so-called Revolution Square). The Palace displays an extensive collection of European and Romanian fine art. The European Art Gallery offers an overview of teh most important artistic movements that marked art history from the early Rennaissance till the first decades of teh 20th century. The Romanian Modern Art Gallery illustrates the development of Romanian fine arts from the first decades of the 19th century till the second half of the 20th century. During the early Middle Ages, Bucharest became a commercial center; important enough to enable the XIV century princes to build the Princely Court – nowadays known as “The Old Court” - which formed the development core of the medieval town. The ﬁrst written mention of the name of “Bucharest” dates back to September 20, 1459: it appears on a document issued from the chancellery of the famous Prince Vlad Tepes (the Impaler). By the year 1599, a new Princely Court was built. Matei Basarab (1632-1654) renovated the Old Court. By 1640, because the prince’s relations with the Turks worsened, Matei Basarab moved his Capital back to the town of Targoviste. Bucharest still remained a princely residence. In May 1654, Prince Constantin Serban Basarab (1654-1658), Matei Basarab’s successor, left for Targoviste after a rebellion of his mercenary troops, and he ordered the Old Court to be set of ﬁre. The Old Royal Court is an outdoor site that can be visited any time. THE ROMANIAN ATHENAEUM

Is a concert hall in the center of Bucharest and a landmark of the Romanian capital city. Opened in 1888, the ornate, domed, circular building is the city’s main concert hall and home of the “George Enescu” Philarmonic and of the George Enescu annual international music festival. It has the aspect of a Greek temple with Ionic columns at the entrance. The wonderful interior with round frescoes depicts important events in Romania’s history. Extensive reconstruction and restoration work has been conducted in 1992 by a Romanian construction company and restoration painter Silviu Petrescu, saving the building from collapse. Visiting hours: every day, unless concerts or rehearsals are held.

PIATA OBOR 5D : A huge covered market located behind the Bucur Obor Department Store at the intersection of Calea Mosilor and Calea Stefan cel Mare. Although the selection of goods is big, the market is crowded and appears dirty. Watch your pockets and bags. If you’re looking for a truly Romanian market experience, this is your spot. Pets, including aquarium supplies, are available, as are fishing needs (including live worms, poles, lures). Wooden and woolen goods, ceramics, clothing, as well as plants cut and growing, are available. A large pedigree dog and cat market at least once a month on the street nearest Mosilor is a fun experience. PIATA 1 MAI 5D : Located near La Fourmi on Ion Mihalache Blvd. It is a small market but has a good selection of fruit, vegetables and flowers. As with all the above markets, clothing, shoes, and household items for cleaning and cooking may also be found. Honey and other bee byproducts are a national pride of Romania and are found at all of these outdoor markets. PIATA DOROBANTILOR 5D : Located indoors on Calea Dorobantilor north of Calea Stefan cel Mare. It offers produce and flowers. The quality is better than Amzei, but the prices are olso higher. Out of season exotic fruits and vegetables can be found here. There are several other stores in this area. The meat market inside is particularly good.

Dear Reader, Regular readers of this column know that over time I have preached against the excessive shelves full of expensive junk food, and questioned the onslaught of Hypermarkets on the Romanian landscape. By coincidence, a few weeks ago I read a column by Terence Blacker in a British newspaper, entitled “Shopping is a Political Act”, which raises the question from a diﬀerent perspective. Blacker acknowledges that Hypermarkets provide the convenience of ﬁnding all you need in one store, as well as the price advantage of huge wholesale purchases, at least some of which is passed on to the consumer in the form of lower prices. However, he also cites a recent study, which showed that people who shop more frequently and regularly tend to live longer and healthier lives than those who shop once a week or less often. He says that “The quality of a community’s shops are what make it a happy interesting and diverse place”. Then of course there is the economic impact. Of course Hypermarkets provide lots of jobs, but do those new jobs really replace the jobs lost though the closure of small neighborhood stores? The lower prices are the result of bulk purchases all over the world, while many of the neighborhood store products carry more locally grown/produced items, again supporting the local economies.

The case for shopping “local” seems to be strong, but that is in an ideal world, and in the wealthier and more sophisticated British economy. There both consumers and farmers may have the flexibility to shop for organic local grown foods or in more expensive “specialty” stores. Here in Bucharest you can, and hopefully will, shop for fruits and vegetables in one of your local bazaars, but the economic reality of the food industry dictates that your local “magazin alimentar” carries the same brands of per-packaged and junk foods as the Hypermarket, though at somewhat higher prices. But then you must add in the “human factor” simple contact with another human being. Its not that the cashier at the Hypermarket is not human, but the lady at my local magazin alimentar recognizes me as a regular customer, even though my travels bring me back only every couple of months. The lady at the corner “covrigarie” remembers that I always buy five covrigi, brown baked, with lots of salt, and starts to select them as she sees me approaching from the tramway stop. I like to travel because I meet new people, learn about new cultures. When I need to go shopping, I sometimes go to a shopping mall. As I enter the air conditioned space, it is easy to forget which City or even Country I may be in. No matter where I may be, New Delhi, Hong Kong or Bucharest, the brands are the same, and the architecture and design concept are similar. The World has indeed become a much smaller place. While you are in Bucharest, do make an effort to stop by a neighborhood open air market, and see the way things use to be, wile you still can, and enjoy.
