CONTENTS Welcome HAPPENINGS 4. FIRST BELGIAN WEEK 5.
IN BUCHAREST CAREERS@HILTON FOR TEENS
May 2013 brings a true European perfume over the capital of Romania, place for too many experiments over time. I told once to a foreign friend that if he wants to see the splendor of Bucharest it’s essentially he returns in late-spring. I continue to think this is real, because spring is the season that brings us back to life, returning to a stream of events not influenced by snow or by unfinished budgets... the beautiful Bucharest women return to happier dress and especially the Hope returns! But this spring brings something more. Another friend asked me recently how do I find Bucharest as a culturally tourist city. How does it look like, when in May a famous Italian tenor, Andrea Bocelli, comes here for a super concert! Plus many other events of some bands with a large number of fans in concerts, they all preparing the rock megafests of the summer! Returning to the average Bucharesters, who rediscovered the historic city center as a place for nonstop fun, for them the managers in the area compete in offerings, increasing the number of live concerts in the area. Even politicians are mentioning now the cultural offer for everybody. Or EUROPAfest, which continues to delight us every mid-May or the International Jazz fests... These are just some of the reasons I hope that Bucharest should remain from now with this European scent that feels everywhere and in everything. If we welcome you in this overnight green city, remember that we really want to support young people to take action on issues of sustainable development of an European metropolis which has both reasons to be proud of and to be unhappy in the same time. I just remembered and I search for you the Top 10 Reasons to Go Green. • IT’S YOUR FUTURE! How old will you be in 2050? The choices and actions we take today will shape the world to come - not just for us, but for future generations as well. Do you have what it takes to leave a better world for your children’s children? • GET INVOLVED in sustainable development initiatives now. Help inspire world leaders to chart a path to a cleaner, greener future! • GAIN EXPERIENCE, MAKE A DIFFERENCE Improve your job prospects while improving the world! Work in the field of sustainable development to get valuable hands-on experience. Got sustainable development experience on your resume? Awesome! • JOIN A GROWING SECTOR. The world is now working toward a low-carbon future, so more and more green jobs are appearing every day. In Germany alone, the number of jobs in the renewable energy sector is expected to increase by more than 35 percent by 2030 from 2010 levels. Prepare yourself for tomorrow’s job market today! • ANY SKILL CAN BENEFIT THE CAUSE. What are you good at? Your skills are bound to be useful in sustainable development. From conservation, engineering and policy to education, media and research, all kinds of talents and skills are needed. Make a positive difference by putting your natural talents to work! • TACKLE CAUSES, NOT SYMPTOMS. Poverty, environmental damage and economic inequality are symptoms of complex, inter-related problems that sustainable development aims to address. Help combat the root causes of these multifaceted problems by getting involved! • YOU ARE NEEDED NOW MORE THAN EVER. We hear stories everyday of individuals, communities and nations negatively affected by unsustainable living patterns. There is no better time to act than now! • YOU WON’T BE ALONE. Sustainable development may be a relatively new field, but it is very popular. People of all backgrounds work and volunteer to keep the sector running and growing. First Belgian Week in Bucharest The Belgian Embassy in Bucharest, the Belgian Romanian Association (BEROBA), Flanders Investment and Trade and Agence à l’Exportation, in cooperation with Novotel Bucharest, organized a Belgian Week, from April 22 to 28.
From Monday to Sunday, seminars with Belgian companies have been organized in order to present the opportunities for business cooperation between Belgian and Romanian enterprises. The Belgian pharmaceutical company UCB had its strategy meetings for the next cycle, Belgian specialist on air photography Eurosense presented the newest service technologies in geoinformation and S.C. Siniat, as subsidiary of the Belgian company Etex, explained its specialties on the dry wall construction. On April 27, 15 Belgian companies made, under the format of a BEROBA Open Business Day, presentations of their products and services in an open for all public format. Belgian business aims to present itself as a true and long lasting partner in Romania. Belgian economic presence in Romania is still on the rise with Mega Image continuing expansion of its supermarkets network but also with several companies enlarging their investments or starting new investments. In 2012, the bilateral trade flows achieved a record height.
Belgium is an epicurean center with gastronomy as one of its shining stars. With the tradition of over 700 years in the production of special beers and since 1850 a top class tradition in chocolate pralines, fine culinary recipes were developed throughout the years based on local tradition. Today Belgian cuisine enjoys worldwide reputation for its variety and universal taste. Belgian beers, Belgian chocolate, Belgian waffles and of course Belgian fries have been served during the Belgian week in the Teatro restaurant. On April 28, the Belgian week ended with a splendid brunch set of Romanian and Belgian food. 4 Bucuresti what, where, when
www.bucurestiwww.ro
The Belgian week was an opportunity for Belgian companies to present their know-how but also an occasion for civil society organizations to give visibility on further deepening their cooperation with Romanian partners. The exhibition in display in the lobby showed 25 years of solidarity between Romanian and Belgian municipalities. In particular in medical care centers and home care partnership was developed with success. With 175 years of diplomatic relations between Romania and Belgium in 2013, historians from both countries have been working on the rich aspects of their common past. On April 27, a stone breaking lecture has been held at Novotel under the title “Belgian Romanian economic relations between 1838 and 1916.” This first ever Belgian week in Romania was equally an opportunity to promote quality products and services from both countries. For beer lovers eight special beers from Belgium have been in the show case while introduced as a novelty for the Romanian market. Choc-o-Lait presented for the first time in Bucharest its “real hot chocolate”. Domeniul Coroanei and Stella Artois beer enriched the table at the gala dinner while other partners as Tarom and logistics companies Essers and Van Moer Group, BNP Paribas Fortis / NV Bruxelles Bucharest Branch, Master Print and others, shared their good business experiences under the auspices of a fine cuisine. For those who have not had enough of it, the social network organization Belgian Connection organized a drink on April 23 evening.
This entire program was presented in a press conference before “The Week” by its main actors and directors - HE Philippe Beke, the ambassador of Belgium, Carl Rossey, President of the Belgian Romanian Business Association, Stephane Barbazan, GM Novotel Bucarest City Centre and Patrick Van den Nieuwenhof, representing The Open Network for Community Development. Actie Dorpen Roemenië Vlaanderen (ADR Vlaanderen), mentioned before, is a NGO working for 25 years on local development in Romania. In 1988, triggered by the systematization plan, Belgian municipalities as first in line started to adopt Romanian threatened villages. In the years following the revolution, twinning and cooperation between Romanian en Belgian partners developed from charity to solidarity. Over the years, different forms of cooperation were developed in a bottom up approach, translating good practices into a sustainable application. In medical care ADR partners, since 2012 working in close cooperation with the Romanian foundation “The Open Network for community development” (TON), achieved good results in first line health projects, next to prevention, home care, health shops and training. Other area which were developed over time are tourism, rural development, youth organizations, waste management and strengthening of administrative capacities. The core philosophy in the cooperation between the Belgian and Romanian partners is solidarity in Romania and with Romanians.

Visits to Wine Princess and Recas Cellars
For us, the journalists arrived in Timisoara, Lucy Pirvu, supported by Dana Corici, thought a rich program this year, with visits to wineries Wine Princess - the vineyard Minis, Arad county, and Recas, near Timisoara. These have been true surprises offered by the organizers. In the evening of the first day was also the first visit of a delegation of journalists for a themed tour at Wine Princess Cellar. cellar manager Balla Geza, also Wine Princess oenologist, is constantly organizing such professional tastings led by him. Located in Arad county, on the Minis vineyard, Wine Princess winery is recognized by the public for its wines in “bottles in paper bag and tied with raffia”, as consumers use to tell. As it concerns the wine enthusiasts, Wine Princess translates into the place of the best “Cadarca”. Along with the delegation of journalists, I’ve had the opportunity to taste both wines that have not yet been put on the shelves, along with wines which made famous the Princess Wine Cellar. After visiting the cellars and viewed the wine line, alongside other journalists I tasted 10 wines: two white, one rose and seven red. It began with Mustoasa de Maderat, continued with Sauvignon Blanc and Rose Cuvee, and we arrived to the Stone Wine range - Pinot noir 2009, and then Cadarca of Minis, Reserve designed for hospitality. A highly valued wine was Black Feteasca 2009, and also Cabernet Franc, or Cuvee Ballada. The tasting ended with Cadarissima, ladies delight. During the nearly four hours, we’ve been seduced by the charisma and passion 8

proved by their guide and directory cellar, Balla Geza. During the tasting, and after it, cheers accompanied the wines presented. Saturday, the second day of the Timi soara International Wine Fair VINVEST, the journalists group we went to Recas, where we were greeted by Ioan Georgiu, Recas Cellars general manager. On the terrace of the courtyard of the well-known Banat vineyards, and in the winery arranged for visits and tastings, we’ve tasted several wines, including the awarded in the National Contest of Wines and Spirits 2013. Great Gold medalist Chardonnay, 2012, Cocosul dintre vii (Vineyard Rooster) was the star, but also the red wines. I have to admit, rosé wine “Hunyadi Castle” was my favorite, which I consider one of the “kings” of the summer that is just beginning. The wines have been accompanied by appetizing dishes. But we must note that VINVEST brought to the Regional Business Center groups of visitors from country, abroad delegations, but also many wine lovers. Such visits in vineyards areas near Timisoara during the period of the salon, but also in other times of the year, do enhance the attractiveness of this region from western Romania.
Flowers for Netherlands End-April, the Embassy of the Netherlands in Bucharest began preparations to celebrate the Day of Her Majesty Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, by a Dutch excellence art show in growing flowers, preparing cheese and veal. This year the celebration marks a milestone in the history of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, by giving the throne of Her Majesty, Queen Beatrix, and the inauguration of the new King WillemAlexander.
The Netherlands Embassy in Bucharest organized an event meant to reveal the secret of the unique recipes of fine cheese and veal specialties, “ Dutch Excellence in Cheeses and Veal”, and an event that enthusiasts floral art could prove their skills, “Floral Arrangements National Contest.” “Day of Her Majesty Queen Beatrix of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, is a great
opportunity to share the public in Romania our centuries old traditions. By organizing the two events we want to present our expertise and experience in three areas: floriculture, making cheese and veal, areas where we have a long history, of which we are very proud. The importance we give to both events is

The cranberries enjoy an impressing variety - from sweet to fruity, through hot like fire to salty, the red grains are versatile as few others and are used in a multitude of products and recipes. MUST SEE IN BUCHAREST THE PARLIAMENT PALACE
THE COTROCENI PALACE
It is a part of the Cotroceni National Museum. The Cotroceni Palace, church and monastery reflect a three-century old history that interweaves political, military, diplomatic, religious and cultural aspects, with the general evolution of Romanian society. The palace was built in the 17th century by the Prince Serban Cantacuzino. The Cotroceni National Museum exhibits a rich range of objects of art, illustrative of the Romanian decorative art. The Cantacuzino space is most suitable for organizing presentations of old art objects that can only outline the exceptional artistic accomplishments of a distant epoch.
It is the second largest administrative building in the world (after the Pentagon) in terms of all-out surface: 330,000 m2. It was built between 1984 and 1989 by a team of architects led by Anca Petrescu. and was destined for the members of the Communist Party; Besides offices, Ceausescu planned to make personal living places, so the Palace’s surface would have been bigger. The building currently houses Romania’s Parliament. Visiting hours: 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday (By appointment only)

MUST SEE IN BUCHAREST THE VILLAGE MUSEUM
Nestled on the shore of the Herastrau Lake, the museum displays 85 peasant homes, barns, churches and mills relocated there from all over Romania. Tall-roofed Transylvanian houses with beautifully crafted shingles sit alongside rustic wooden churches to form a unique neighborhood. The overall impression is that Romanian peasants take great pride in their work and homes. Everyday accessories: tools, butter-churns, hay forks, beer kegs and clothes are displayed inside the house. This museum can take a whole day to explore and, in fine weather, families settle down for picnics in the scenic grounds. Visiting hours: Nov.-Apr.: 09:00 - 17:00., May-Oct.: 09:00 19:00, every day, including Monday THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF ART
The museum is hosted by the former Royal Palace and is the most representative art gallery in Romania. The Royal Palace was the official residence of the Romanian kings. Its current facade was given the finishing touches in 1937 when Carol II was King of Romania. The National Art Museum Palace is located in downtown Bucharest (in the so-called Revolution Square). The Palace displays an extensive collection of European and Romanian fine art. The European Art Gallery offers an overview of teh most important artistic movements that marked art history from the early Rennaissance till the first decades of teh 20th century. The Romanian Modern Art Gallery illustrates the development of Romanian fine arts from the first decades of the 19th century till the second half of the 20th century. Visiting hours: Wednesday through Sunday 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. (May - September) 10 a.m - 6 p.m. (October - April) Closed: Monday, Tuesday THE OLD ROYAL COURT
During the early Middle Ages, Bucharest became a commercial center; important enough to enable the XIV century princes to build the Princely Court – nowadays known as “The Old Court” - which formed the development core of the medieval town. The first written mention of the name of “Bucharest” dates back to September 20, 1459: it appears on a document issued from the chancellery of the famous Prince Vlad Tepes (the Impaler). By the year 1599, a new Princely Court was built. Matei Basarab (1632-1654) renovated the Old Court. By 1640, because the prince’s relations with the Turks worsened, Matei Basarab moved his Capital back to the town of Targoviste. Bucharest still remained a princely residence. In May 1654, Prince Constantin Serban Basarab (1654-1658), Matei Basarab’s successor, left for Targoviste after a rebellion of his mercenary troops, and he ordered the Old Court to be set of fire. The Old Royal Court is an outdoor site that can be visited any time. THE ROMANIAN ATHENAEUM
Is a concert hall in the center of Bucharest and a landmark of the Romanian capital city. Opened in 1888, the ornate, domed, circular building is the city’s main concert hall and home of the “George Enescu” Philarmonic and of the George Enescu annual international music festival. It has the aspect of a Greek temple with Ionic columns at the entrance. The wonderful interior with round frescoes depicts important events in Romania’s history. Extensive reconstruction and restoration work has been conducted in 1992 by a Romanian construction company and restoration painter Silviu Petrescu, saving the building from collapse. Visiting hours: every day, unless concerts or rehearsals are held.

MARKETS IN BUCHAREST
One of the unique and more pleasurable forms of food shopping in Bucharest are the outdoor markets. Due to transportation difficulties, supplies are often copious at one market and non-existent at another. Of the markets listed here, Amzei market has the best selection and prices. It is advisable to bring your own shopping bags when shopping at the outdoor markets.

PIATA OBOR 5D : A huge covered market located behind the Bucur Obor Department Store at the intersection of Calea Mosilor and Calea Stefan cel Mare. Although the selection of goods is big, the market is crowded and appears dirty. Watch your pockets and bags. If you’re looking for a truly Romanian market experience, this is your spot. Pets, including aquarium supplies, are available, as are fishing needs (including live worms, poles, lures). Wooden and woolen goods, ceramics, clothing, as well as plants cut and growing, are available. A large pedigree dog and cat market at least once a month on the street nearest Mosilor is a fun experience. PIATA 1 MAI 5D : Located near La Fourmi on Ion Mihalache Blvd. It is a small market but has a good selection of fruit, vegetables and flowers. As with all the above markets, clothing, shoes, and household items for cleaning and cooking may also be found. Dear Reader, Our task at Crystal Publishing Group, indeed the reason for our existence is to promote tourism in Bucharest and Romania. Our editorial team does their best to feature interesting stories and information about interesting events and places to visit in Bucharest. The good job they do gives me the flexibility and freedom to use this page to share some of my concerns and more
philosophical thoughts with those readers who make it to the last page. By the way, some years ago there was a research showing that many people, myself included, in fact start to read a magazine from the last page back so maybe I have lots of readers. As I sat to write this essay, and thought about the “economic discomfort” in Romania, as I was reminded that Andrea Bocelli is coming for a live concert to Bucharest in May, preceding other important bands arriving in the Capital, two old quotes came to mind.
“Give them Bread and Circuses” a phrases from the Roman Empire of the B.C. era, and “Let them eat cake” from Marie Antoinette, just a few hundred years ago. Of course, we no longer have Emperors or Queens who could make such pronouncements, but… In the same time, I do not think that the plethora of Hypermarkets and Shopping Malls could be built without official endorsement and support in terms of infrastructure. Yes, it is all “progress” and development, but other than being entertaining, or providing a “destination” if we can tear ourselves away from the myriad and one cable TV shows, do they provide long term employment, or involve us in thinking about our culture and traditions? About life? Romania has abandoned most of its capacity to produce, and is becoming increasingly a consumer society, and we proudly point to that “progress”, and the fact that we have become like many of the other Western European countries. To close with another ancient thought, we are trading
“Cogito Ergo Sum” for “I consume therefore I am”. Is that the “progress” Romanians want for their country? But, you are in Bucharest, while I hope you consider some of my thoughts, I also hope you will participate in the pleasure that the summer before time and music can offer here.
