May 2012 brings a true European perfume over the capital of Romania, place for too many experiments over time. I told once to a foreign friend that if he wants to see the splendor of Bucharest it’s essentially he returns in spring. I continue to think this, because spring is the season that brings us back to life, returning to a stream of events not influenced by snow or by unfinished budgets... the beautiful Bucharest women return to happier dress and especially the Hope returns! But this spring brings something more. On a new National Arena, as we wanted it for years, we organize a major European football event, the Europa League final. Football fans expect a “total war” on the field, a confrontation that would truly bring Bucharest on the continental football map. Hotel owners, bars and restaurants expect massive revenue betting on at least 30,000 Spanish fans to consume as the devils in Bucharest. They would have preferred that at least one of the finalists to be from England... but the Spaniards are also “good consumers” and they would rediscover a city much better prepared for their pre- and post-match enjoyment. So much until now about football, because another friend recently asked me how do I find Bucharest as a culturally tourist city. How do it looks like, when also in May another famous Spanish, Jose Carreras, comes back for a super concert! Plus many events of some bands with a large number of fans in concerts, they all preparing the two rock mega-fests in June! Returning to the average Bucharesters, who rediscovered the historic city center as a place for nonstop fun, for them the managers in the area compete in offerings, increasing the number of live concerts in the area. Even politicians who are campaigning for Bucharest will complete the cultural offer for everybody. Or EUROPAfest, which continues to delight us every mid-May or the International Jazz Festival at Green Hours... These are just some of the reasons I hope that Bucharest should remain from now with this European scent that feels everywhere and in everything.

Welcome to the GAME! The National Arena, UEFA Elite Stadium
The new National Arena is a football stadium just completed in Bucharest, in the Lia Manoliu Sports Complex. Finished mid-2011, it hosts Romania national football team’s games, the Romania Cup, and the Romanian Supercup finals. The official inauguration was on September 6, 2011, featuring the official football match between Romania and France (0-0). Despite the delays, the stadium was finished before the deadline, in order to host the UEFA Europa League 2011–12 final, scheduled in Bucharest on May 9, 2012, starting at 20:45. So, now we welcome you for the finals! The total cost of the new arena is Euro 170 million, paid by the Municipality of Bucharest and the Romanian Government and it is estimated that the construction costs will be earn within 25 years. In October 2009, it was also decided that the stadium include a retractable roof which can be opened or closed in 15 minutes, allowing for year around usage. The venue has 55,200 seats, with a potential expansion to 63,000. 3,600 VIP seats are available, and 364 seats are prearranged for the press sector (with a possible expansion to 548 seats, as in the case of this final). For smooth operations, many of the services available at the stadium will be leased

Romanian sports teams have won many trophies in international competitions and they deserved a grand and modern national arena in the Capital. Of course, we never won a major competition in football with the national team, but this sport is without any doubt the most popular in Romania. That’s why the new national football arena is a dream came true. And hosting the Europa League Final match, on May 9, tops any football event hosted by Romania ever.
out, including the stadium operations, and commercial spaces around the arena. This way the stadium will have a functional aspect not only during the games, but in the daily life of the neighboring community. The landscape and business facilities should become soon a pole of attraction and recreation for Bucharesters. The entire stadium can be completely evacuated in 8 minutes; access to the stadium will be on foot or by car from city streets. There are 3,000 parking places for people coming to the stadium, with access roads. Two underground areas are designed as parking spaces (200 places) and technical areas for football teams, coaches and media representatives, and the access for the players to the football arena. On the ground floor there are some loges and entrances for fans, the first floor includes VIP loges while the second floor has the circular ring for spectators, leading to the balcony of the stadium, which seats 35,450 people. Remember
The previous National Stadium was a multi-purpose stadium. It was built in 1953, in five months, for the 4th World Festival of Youth and Students, which the Communist regime specifically wanted to be held in Bucharest. Opened on August 2, 1953, it was at first known as “Stadionul 23 August”, and later on as “Stadionul National”. It had capacity for 60,120 people at football or rugby games and 70,000 for concerts, but there were major events when almost 100,000 people attended. The sports complex that included the National Stadium, is called Lia Manoliu after the famous Romanian athlete. Although the stadium was mostly used for football matches, starting with 1990, it hosted a number of concerts, including Michael Jackson’s Dangerous World Tour concert on October 1, 1992, as well as the History World Tour on September 14, 1996. Some 70,000 people attended the concert. Other major concerts included Aerosmith (1994), Metallica (1999), Depeche Mode (2006), The Rolling Stones and George Michael (2007). In October 2005, it was decided to completely rebuild the stadium, but only a few repairs were carried on. The work began in December 2007, when funds became available. The last football match played at the National Stadium, after 54 years of service, was a 6-1 win against Albania on November 21, 2007. Immediately after the match, a few seats were removed from the stadium, as a symbolic start of construction. The original stadium was demolished to make room for a new one

The Trophy
The UEFA Europa League trophy weighs 15 kg, stands 65 cm high and is silver on a yellow marble plinth, which carries the names and flags of the UEFA Cup and UEFA Europa League winners. It was designed by Swiss artist Alex W. Diggelmann and crafted by the Bertoni workshops in Milan for the 1972 final. Unusually, it has no handles, its beauty lying in its simplicity. Just above the plinth, a group of players seem to be jostling for the ball. In fact they are supporting the octagonal cup which is emblazoned with the UEFA emblem. While the trophy itself has not changed during the shift from UEFA Cup to UEFA Europa League, the regulations pertaining to it have. Previously, the original UEFA Cup was kept by the winners for 11 months, before being ceremoniously handed over to the host city of the next final. The holders were also entitled to keep a four-fifths size replica to celebrate their achievement. Under the UEFA Europa League regulations, the original trophy stays with UEFA and a full-size replica is presented to the winning club to keep. Only four captains have managed to lift the trophy more than once. The most recent was Sevilla FC captain Javi Navarro, who led his team to victory in Eindhoven in 2006 and Glasgow in 2007. The only other captain to get his hands on the trophy in successive
seasons was another Spanish defender, Real Madrid CF skipper José Antonio Camacho, in 1985 and 1986. Berti Vogts took slightly longer to complete his double, winning the trophy with VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach in 1975 and 1979, while Emlyn Hughes was victorious at the 1973 and 1976 finals with Liverpool FC and FC Internazionale Milano’s Giuseppe Bergomi held the trophy aloft in both 1991 and 1994. UEFA Europa League trophy visited Bucharest About one month before the final, UEFA President Michel Platini has presented the UEFA Europa League trophy to the city of Bucharest as the countdown began to the final. The trophy handover ceremony was at the National Arena Bucharest, venue for the final. The UEFA Europa League trophy was handed over to the mayor of Bucharest, Sorin Oprescu, by UEFA President Michel Platini. Sorin Oprescu, Bucharest’s mayor, told us at the event: “Romanians know how to welcome their guests – teams, officials, fans, tourists – and this final between two Latin teams in a Latin country will represent an immense joy for all Bucharest people.” After the trophy handover ceremony the UEFA Europa League trophy’s started its tour of Bucharest. The famous silverware has been hosted in ten important locations during the last month. The tour’s final destination was again the National Arena.

The clubs are split into 12 groups of four teams, playing home and away against each of their pool opponents. Two sides from each section advance, proceeding into the round of 32 alongside eight third-placed teams from the UEFA Champions League group stage. Knockout phase - From the last 32 until the semi-finals, clubs play two games against each other on a home-and-away basis. Final - The final is decided by a single match, which this season will be played at the National Arena, Bucharest on Wednesday 9 May. All-Spanish Final in Bucharest The two finalists first competed in 1921 but Athletic Club and Club Atlético de Madrid’s rivalry gain a new dimension for their meeting in the UEFA Europa League final. The competition will be decided in an all-Spanish final. That was also the case in the UEFA Cup final in 2006/07, when Sevilla FC beat RCD Espanyol on penalties after a 2-2 draw. Of the last nine editions of this competition, four have been won by Spanish sides. With their same coloured shirts and similar names, there will be no need for introductions when Athletic Club and Club Atlético de Madrid meet in the final. These are teams who have been rivals since the Liga began. Atlético can point to more experience of the big stage in Europe, having contested five previous UEFA competition finals, winning two: the 1961/62 UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, in which they defeated ACF Fiorentina, and the 2009/10 UEFA Europa League, when they beat Fulham FC. Athletic’s only previous European final brought defeat on away goals by Juventus in the 1977 UEFA Cup. Athletic may have less European final experience but they share with Barcelona the
record for most Copa del Rey final appearances – 35 ahead of the clubs’ showdown in this season’s final on 25 May. The Basque club have won 23 domestic cups to Atlético’s nine. Athletic Club Bilbao has domestic cup finals to look forward to Athletic meeting FC Barcelona in the Spanish Cup on May 25. Athletic’s coach is former Argentina defender Marcelo Bielsa, who briefly led Espanyol in 1998 before taking charge of Argentina (1998–2004) and Chile (2007–11). This is his first season as a player or coach in UEFA club competition. Athletic have never played in Bucharest. Athletic have never met Club Atlético de Madrid in UEFA competition, though they have met plenty in the Spanish league. For Atlético Madrid, the final would be their 100th UEFA Cup and UEFA Europa League appearance. Atlético have been to the Romanian capital three times, with the record W1 D1 L1. Diego Simeone replaced Gregorio Manzano as Atlético coach on 23 December. The former Argentina midfield had two spells at the club as a player, winning a domestic double in 1995/96. He lifted the 1997/98 UEFA Cup with Inter and is coaching in Europe for a second time, having helped Calcio Catania avoid relegation from Serie A in 2010/11. Simeone turn 42 on 28 April.

tourism
Visiting the Wine Princess and Recas Cellars My recent presence as a media partner at the International Wine Fair VINVEST brought me great surprises offered by the organizers. The evening of the first day brought the first thematic visit of the delegation of tourism journalists, at the Wine Princess Cellar. For a compact group of 50 people is ideal to understand wine at home, and the cellar manager, Balla Geza, also enologist of the Wine Princess wines, constantly organize such professional wine tasting. Situated in Arad county, in the Minis vineyard, the Wine Princess cellar is recognized by the public for its wines in “bottles in paper bags tied with raffia,” as less familiar customers use to say. For their part the Wine
journalists have been seduced by the charisma and passion shown by their guide and wine cellar manager, Balla Geza. During the tasting, but also at the end, everybody applauded the wines presentation. Saturday, the second day of the International Wine Fair VINVEST, the group of journalists we went to the Recas cellars, where we were greeted by Ioan Georgiu, general manager of Recas Winery. Within the well-known Banat vineyards, and in the winery special arranged for visits and tastings for professionals, we tasted seven wines, among which those medal awarded at the Wine and Spirits National Competition VINVEST 2012. The tasting began with the 2011 Italian Riesling, then 2011 Sauvignon Blanc, both tasted for the first time. We continued with Chardonnay and with an interesting
Princess wines lovers, is seen as the “place” of the best “Cadarca”. Along with the delegation of journalists I have had the opportunity to first taste wines that have not yet been placed on the shops shelves, along with wines that made the prestige of the Wine Princess Cellar. After I visited the cellars and I saw the wine line, along with the other journalists I tasted 10 wines: three white and seven red. The tasting began with a Maderat Mustoasa, has continued with Pinot Gris, Minis Furmint (rare in Romania), and we arrived to the Stone
Wine family, 2009 Pinot noir, and then Minis Cadarca Reserve, designed for the hospitality industry. A much appreciated wine was 2009 Black Feteasca, but also Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grand Burgund (also rare in Romania). The tasting ended with Cadarisima, who made ladies delight. During the nearly four hours, all the 10

assortment of four white wines and one red, gathered under the name Solo Quinta. Last three wines were Rose, 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon and the awarded 2011 Cabernet Savignon “Castel Huniade “. The wines were accompanied by appetizing French and international dishes. But we should note that Saturday brought at the International Wine Fair VINVEST, organized in the Regional Business Center, many groups of Romanian visitors, delegations from abroad, but also many wine lovers. On Saturday took place the medals awarding festivity for the winning wines at the Wine and Spirits National Competition VINVEST 2012. One of the great gold medals went to Jidvei sparkling wine. After the ceremony, these wines were tasted by journalists and guests. In the afternoon, several manufacturers have launched their recent harvest wines.

MUST SEE IN BUCHAREST THE PARLIAMENT PALACE
THE COTROCENI PALACE
It is a part of the Cotroceni National Museum. The Cotroceni Palace, church and monastery reflect a three-century old history that interweaves political, military, diplomatic, religious and cultural aspects, with the general evolution of Romanian society. The palace was built in the 17th century by the Prince Serban Cantacuzino. The Cotroceni National Museum exhibits a rich range of objects of art, illustrative of the Romanian decorative art. The Cantacuzino space is most suitable for organizing presentations of old art objects that can only outline the exceptional artistic accomplishments of a distant epoch.
It is the second largest administrative building in the world (after the Pentagon) in terms of all-out surface: 330,000 m2. It was built between 1984 and 1989 by a team of architects led by Anca Petrescu. and was destined for the members of the Communist Party; Besides offices, Ceausescu planned to make personal living places, so the Palace’s surface would have been bigger. The building currently houses Romania’s Parliament. Visiting hours: 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday (By appointment only)

MUST SEE IN BUCHAREST THE VILLAGE MUSEUM
Nestled on the shore of the Herastrau Lake, the museum displays 85 peasant homes, barns, churches and mills relocated there from all over Romania. Tall-roofed Transylvanian houses with beautifully crafted shingles sit alongside rustic wooden churches to form a unique neighborhood. The overall impression is that Romanian peasants take great pride in their work and homes. Everyday accessories: tools, butter-churns, hay forks, beer kegs and clothes are displayed inside the house. This museum can take a whole day to explore and, in fine weather, families settle down for picnics in the scenic grounds. Visiting hours: Nov.-Apr.: 09:00 - 17:00., May-Oct.: 09:00 19:00, every day, including Monday THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF ART
The museum is hosted by the former Royal Palace and is the most representative art gallery in Romania. The Royal Palace was the official residence of the Romanian kings. Its current facade was given the finishing touches in 1937 when Carol II was King of Romania. The National Art Museum Palace is located in downtown Bucharest (in the so-called Revolution Square). The Palace displays an extensive collection of European and Romanian fine art. The European Art Gallery offers an overview of teh most important artistic movements that marked art history from the early Rennaissance till the first decades of teh 20th century. The Romanian Modern Art Gallery illustrates the development of Romanian fine arts from the first decades of the 19th century till the second half of the 20th century. Visiting hours: Wednesday through Sunday 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. (May - September) 10 a.m - 6 p.m. (October - April) Closed: Monday, Tuesday THE OLD ROYAL COURT
During the early Middle Ages, Bucharest became a commercial center; important enough to enable the XIV century princes to build the Princely Court – nowadays known as “The Old Court” - which formed the development core of the medieval town. The first written mention of the name of “Bucharest” dates back to September 20, 1459: it appears on a document issued from the chancellery of the famous Prince Vlad Tepes (the Impaler). By the year 1599, a new Princely Court was built. Matei Basarab (1632-1654) renovated the Old Court. By 1640, because the prince’s relations with the Turks worsened, Matei Basarab moved his Capital back to the town of Targoviste. Bucharest still remained a princely residence. In May 1654, Prince Constantin Serban Basarab (1654-1658), Matei Basarab’s successor, left for Targoviste after a rebellion of his mercenary troops, and he ordered the Old Court to be set of fire. The Old Royal Court is an outdoor site that can be visited any time. THE ROMANIAN ATHENAEUM
Is a concert hall in the center of Bucharest and a landmark of the Romanian capital city. Opened in 1888, the ornate, domed, circular building is the city’s main concert hall and home of the “George Enescu” Philarmonic and of the George Enescu annual international music festival. It has the aspect of a Greek temple with Ionic columns at the entrance. The wonderful interior with round frescoes depicts important events in Romania’s history. Extensive reconstruction and restoration work has been conducted in 1992 by a Romanian construction company and restoration painter Silviu Petrescu, saving the building from collapse. Visiting hours: every day, unless concerts or rehearsals are held.

MARKETS IN BUCHAREST
One of the unique and more pleasurable forms of food shopping in Bucharest are the outdoor markets. Due to transportation difficulties, supplies are often copious at one market and non-existent at another. Of the markets listed here, Amzei market has the best selection and prices. It is advisable to bring your own shopping bags when shopping at the outdoor markets.

PIATA OBOR 5D : A huge covered market located behind the Bucur Obor Department Store at the intersection of Calea Mosilor and Calea Stefan cel Mare. Although the selection of goods is big, the market is crowded and appears dirty. Watch your pockets and bags. If you’re looking for a truly Romanian market experience, this is your spot. Pets, including aquarium supplies, are available, as are fishing needs (including live worms, poles, lures). Wooden and woolen goods, ceramics, clothing, as well as plants cut and growing, are available. A large pedigree dog and cat market at least once a month on the street nearest Mosilor is a fun experience. PIATA 1 MAI 5D : Located near La Fourmi on Ion Mihalache Blvd. It is a small market but has a good selection of fruit, vegetables and flowers. As with all the above markets, clothing, shoes, and household items for cleaning and cooking may also be found. Honey and other bee byproducts are a national pride of Romania and are found at all of these outdoor markets. PIATA DOROBANTILOR 5D : Located indoors on Calea Dorobantilor north of Calea Stefan cel Mare. It offers produce and flowers. The quality is better than Amzei, but the prices are olso higher. Out of season exotic fruits and vegetables can be found here. There are several other stores in this area. The meat market inside is particularly good.

• LUDWIG GELOBTER
“Give them Bread and Circuses” a phrases from the Roman Empire of the B.C. era, and “Let them eat cake” from Marie Antoinette, just a few hundred years ago.
Dear Reader,
the last word
Our task at CPG, indeed the reason for our existence is to promote tourism in Bucharest and Romania. Our editorial team does their best to feature interesting stories and information about interesting events and places to visit in Bucharest. The good job they do, gives me the flexibility and freedom to use this page to share some of my concerns and more philosophical thoughts with those readers who make it to the last page. By the way, some years ago there was a research showing that many people, myself included, in fact start to read a magazine from the last page back so maybe I have lots of readers. As I sat to write this essay, and thought about the continuing economic malaise in Romania, as I was reminded that the Europe Cup in football is coming to Romania in May, two old quotes came to mind.
Of course we no longer have Emperors or Queens who could make such pronouncements, but I don’t believe that the football cup would be in Bucharest without substantial government involvement and support, nor do I think that the plethora of Hypermarkets and Shopping Malls could be built without official endorsement and support in terms of infrastructure. Yes, it is all “progress” and development, but other than being entertaining, or providing a “destination” if we can tear ourselves away from the myriad and one cable TV shows, do they provide long term employment, or involve us in thinking about our culture and traditions? Abut life? Romania has abandoned most of its capacity to produce, and is becoming increasingly a consumer society, and we proudly point to that “progress”, and the fact that we have become like many of the other Western European countries. To close with another ancient thought, we are trading “Cogito Ergo Sum” for “I consume therefore I am”. Is that the “progress” Romanians want for their country. But, you are in Bucharest, I while I hope you consider some of my thoughts, I also hope you will participate in the pleasure that springtime and football can offer here.
