This warm October, arrived after a real summer hot September, changes the annual plans that we used to have for many years. Seldom such a year, atypical, experts say, but more and more often we say. Should we put it on the global warming? ... The fact is that if we understood the parents angry that the start of the school was postponed a week ruining their holiday plans - they could leave two weeks in September, which would have meant significant savings in their budget, I understand now also the winemakers. Dedicating these lines to the wine, the supreme food, the blood of Christ ... I understand the vine cultivators, be they large or small. This year messed up their economic plans. Experts agree, unanimously, that 2012 will be an exceptional year for wine, but the summer heat drastically reduced the production! In many places, up to 50%! Quality versus quantity! For a long time we discuss about, tilting towards quality, but we don’t accept such a reduced quantity! The fact is, I give you a tip now, if you want a safe investment, and you have a large basement, buy wine from the 2012production! At one point could be worth as gold! If you have no basement, enjoy the moment and drink (with your own measure and then take a taxi!), a much as you can! Here they are the surprises. If in other years we’ve been harvesting grapes at the beginning of October, now we already taste the first wine of the year! Specialists from Cotnari, who step by step climb back where they used to be, in the top of the national rankings, are the first, releasing the Francusa 2012. They invested heart and issued the first “yellow” of the 2012 autumn, organizing a real event for this launch. The Cotnari hills hosted Moldavia bards singing Romanian traditional songs, but also “imported” from other traditional Romanian regions. All of them sang also about the wine, who cheered on the Romanians (but not only!) over millennia. A prominent professor told us that only advanced archaic civilizations produced and consumed wine! I sincerely believe him, but in this case it’s once again confirmed that the Dacian’s civilization was so advanced that, at one time, it banned wine consumption, to let other archaic civilizations to catch them up... Back to wine again I’m expecting with the same interest also Faleschini’s Autumn Flower, and many wine festivals scheduled in wine regions, of which the one in Focsani seems to stand out. It is enjoyment’s time, although drought has devastated many fields, and we almost turn the harvest fest into a wine festival... I almost forgot, just in a few days Bucharest will host the second National Romanian Wine Fair - Vintest. On 12-14 October, the downtown Sala Palatului hosts the Romanian wine industry united in one of the most elevated events dedicated to wine. Singer, another song! Waiter, another bottle!

Green Energy in Timisoara Many renewable energy investments were made in Timis County over the past two years both in the private and the state sector. Projects related to promoting renewable energy investments benefited constantly by funds not in the least light from the county administration budget. The most ambitious project of the kind is Timisoara Technological Park for Alternative Energy. Timis County Council decided to develop an investment plan to create the “Timisoara Technological Park for Alternative Energy”. This structure, located on a plot of land belonging to the county, intends to be a mean of assisting business by offering offices and equipment to companies specialized in producing equipment for alternative energy generation. To such purpose, on the structure of the Park for Alternative Energy, green energy research and micro-production activities as well as research activities, focusing on the development of new models and prototypes in the field of renewable energy generation, will be promoted. The investment implies the development of utilities on a 14-hectars (35 acres) land plot, communication infrastructure, internal traffic routes and access roads to the park, green areas, land plots of various areas to be offered for rent. On such plats, the occupants may build their company headquarters according to their own requirements. Access to utilities and communication lines will be provided to each plot as well as the equipment to be used by the economic agents for manufacturing and services. Moreover, a multi-operational building will be erected in the park, Centre of Technological Transfer and Promotion of Innovative Technologies, which will include several facilities required by the companies with headquarters in the Alternative Energy Park. The overall cost of this project amounts to lei 50 million, and it will be correlated with a second green energy project to be financed by European funding. The second project is the Timisoara Photovoltaic Energy Generation Park, a project to execute the infrastructure of a technological park covering an area of approximately 45 hectares (111 acres), on which appropriate conditions will be provided to execute alternative energy (photovoltaic, wind, geothermal, biomass, biodiesel) generation facilities. www.bucurestiwww.ro

After more than two years of preparation and thousands of hours of rehearsals, a new Lord of the Dance show is ready! The band’s management decided that the new show would be presented from the Eastern Europe tour, the first destination being Romania! Michael Flatley outdid himself and built a new script based on the eternal struggle between good and evil, with a fabulous choreography. If last year 45 dancers on the scene conquered the audience with their skills, in the new show in October he reached a record number of 60! “National myth. Arts contribution to defining the Romanian identity (18301930)” is the title of the exhibition opened at the National Museum of Art of Romania (NMAR), which includes approximately 250 paintings, graphics, sculpture and decorative art. Exhibits are made by some of the most important modern Romanian artists such as Barbu Iscovescu, Constantin Daniel Rosenthal, Carol Popp de Szathmari, George Tattarescu, Theodor Aman, Nicolae Grigorescu, Ioan Andreescu, Stefan Luchian, Nicolae Tonitza, Oscar Han, Camil Ressu, Dimitrie Paciurea. Thus, there are explored the ways in which these artists have helped to define the national identity in a time full of historical events, crucial for the formation of the Romanian state. The famous works outline the main steps of creating the Romanian national state: 1848 Revolution, 1859 first Union, the establishment of Carol I as Ruler of Romania in 1866, the 1877-1878 War of Independence, proclamation of the Kingdom of Romania in 1881, the Great Union of 1918. The exhibition will be open until February 13, 2013, and can be accessed free on the first Wednesday of each month. THE NATIONAL THEATRE FESTIVAL OCTOBER 26 - NOVEMBER 4, BUCHAREST

The Romanian Lottery Cross, an international competition, at its fifteenth edition, had a special promotion. Gabriela Szabo went through schools and colleges, inviting young people to sport activities and to a healthy lifestyle.
Gabi Szabo spoke to high school students about her life and career, but also about the sacrifices that you have to do to get as high. “To fight, to make sacrifices to have no regrets! Do all you can to achieve your dreams,” told Gabi Szabo to the youth, deeply impressed by their attendance. “Run for your health!” is the motto of the Romanian Lottery Cross. The motto is addressed also this year to all those wishing to participate. Professionals, amateurs, children, youth, veterans, men and women, boys and girls or people with disabilities... are expected to respond as in each year. “Sport should not miss from the daily program of each of us. Do not ever forget: the human body is designed for movement, so let us promote together a healthy lifestyles,” said the multiple champion. The event was an initiative of the Romanian Lottery and Romanian Athletics Federation to promote between children and young people the importance of practicing sport and a direct invitation to participate in the cross.

TIB will take in Romexpo Exhibitions Center together with Inventika - The International Salon of Inventions and EEE – The International fair for renewable energy, conventional energy, equipment and technologies for oil and natural gas. During the exhibition, the public institutions together with the specialized companies, will participate at the conferences program, where will be discussed the most important issues of the actual topics of the hard industry and economical figures. The previous edition of TIB gathered over 300 companies from 17 countries on a 20,000-sqm exhibition area, and over 10,000 specialist visitors, to whom the companies presented the latest technologies and machines.

Romexpo organizes, in partnership with the Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Romania, under the patronage of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the 17th edition of Indagra. The Fair represents the most complex event of its kind in Romania, aimed at promoting the local animal husbandry potential, bio traditional products, as well as the internationally recognized Romanian wine varieties. The previous edition of Indagra gathered a total of 380 exhibiting companies, which have occupied a total area of 30,000sqm. 32% of the participating companies were international ones and the number of visitors was 48,000 people, both professionals and general public. To the end of the 19th century, one of the first newspaper kiosks in Bucharest was set at the main entrance in Cismigiu. Today, the restored kiosk may still be admired. A special attraction in Cismigiu is represented by the Romanian traditional restaurant built by the architect Ion Mincu and called Monte Carlo. Nowadays, the place with the terrace near the lake continues to attract many people offering season’s menu. On the side to Schitu Magureanu Boulevard a rotunda was set up, in the middle of a green space, which may still be admired today: the Roman Rondo. Officially opened in 1943, the rotunda contains stone hand-carved busts on high pedestals, rendering the faces of famous figures of Romanian culture: Mihai Eminescu, I.L. Caragiale, George Cosbuc, Ion Creanga, B.P. Hasdeu, Nicolae Balcescu, Vasile Alecsandri. On the alleys you may admire more statues, of Sister Smara, of George Panu, the Monument of French Heroes, Sissi Stefanidi Spring – a mother in deep suffering after the death of her daughter pours water with the mug… The pigeons also seem to have convened a rendezvous in the park. They fly in hundreds over the alleys and land to peck on the seeds or bread pieces spread by the people. You may always be amazed by all the new information you get after a walk on the alleys of this green corner of Bucharest, even if you pass it daily! On the lake, delicate swans ignore you with their splendor… This life fragment reveals to you the eternity of this central garden, where everybody feels good. from a box by a very colourful parrot. Cismigiu is never deserted, this is the conclusion. The first snowdrops, the colours of autumn, the freezing of winter and, last but not the least, the summer sun, always attract us on the alleys of this immortal garden, to visit it over and over again.
Go North, to Herastrau!
After Cismigiu Park, one of the oldest and most beautiful park of Bucharest, I invite you in Herastrau, the largest park and garden of the Capital. Located in the north of the city, on an area of 110 hectares (270 acres), the place was, before 1930, a marshy area that would be drained during 1930-1935. Also called Carol II Park, the Herastrau was a promenade place even in the eighteenth century. Princes and their wife used to walk with the ladies of the Court suite, with a large boat on the lake, on the music accompaniment. Old Herastrau had two theaters, one for adults and one for children, two exhibition halls, libraries, reading and chess corner and a landing place for boats. For flowers lovers, each season the park turns into a paradise. Maple, poplar, willow, linden and ash, Expoflora area… are always full of color, the colours of the season. In the garden also live over 50 species of birds that delight in color and song. Herastrau it’s also renowned for the Village Museum, which includes a great variety of country houses displaced here, churches and wind- or water-mills, and inns, barns… Basically, it is a miniature universe of the Romanian village, especially for tourists. Another interesting museum you can visit in the same park is the one of the locomotives and trains, while Elizabeth Palace, the actual residence of the former king of Romania, is another key point with its elegance and grave architecture. If the children are with you, do not miss the fun park, full of life and youth. Mountain coaster, cars, horses, chains, swans, carting, all are to delight little ones, but also for grownups. Are you an enthusiast’s skateboarding? Do you like roller bike lanes? Herastrau has a special corner set up for that. Warning! The place makes no warranties against falls! For perfume and color, I highly recommend the Japanese Garden with its bridges over water, stones arranged in all kinds, rustic wooden benches. Statues of important people of national and international culture add to the appeal of the park. Another garden that enhances picturesque I consider to be the corner of the painting, a special place where you always find a painting or drawing exhibition. Off the bridge, in the distance, I see a fisherman is throwing his fishing rod into the lake waters… The only sailing club in Bucharest and most active of the country is still here – Yacht Club Sportul Studentesc. But what surpasses all existing beauty here is a boat ride. During autumn, in any full of warmth day, people of all ages do walk in the sun. Terraces and restaurants located on the waterfront are full. Reasons to go to this park? If those above did not convinced you, just walk 8

up there: the old romantic air, the green, so much even now, trees like in stories, skate and the Village Museum, beautiful lake and a walk around, or the amusement park… Even in the evening the park is beautiful with its lights. At late hours you find amateur and professional rollers and bicyclers and those who choose to relax by jogging. So yes, it’s worth going through Herastrau! The ladies chose to take advantage of the sun not by sitting on benches and admiring the thousand burnt leaves fallen down on the alleys but by going shopping. On high thin heels and in colourful overcoats draping over their shoulders or on their arms, the women carry bags of all sizes… Some of the ladies are still wearing summer shoes but hang onto all the shop windows with boots in sight. Others have already prepared for winter and are armed in cold season clothing. They wear knee-tall boots and matching short skirts and jackets. Going shopping is a “syndrome” of these years, but the crisis left us more time to check an interesting park and a wealthier climate. Beside the two important parks, the sixth sector encircle Lacul Morii (the Mill’s Lake). This accumulation lake was built in order to prevent the flooding generated by Dambovita River that enters the city through north-west. The 246 hectares (610 acres) water surface was built in the communist period (together with the river rectification) and have changed for today’s and tomorrow’s generation the appearance of these places. In fact, each sector of Bucharest has its big green area, but also smaller green corners, increasingly every year. Just half an hour drive from the Capital, other special places await for you… Still it is autumn, all of a sudden the sun may disappear, hiding behind a cloud. The air becomes colder and the wind return to the city streets, raising the yellow leaves off the sidewalks and blowing them all-around. Tiny cold rain drops kiss the city streets. Peace and Friendship for 22 Years End-September, Peace Corps in Romania and the U.S. Embassy held the “Legacy of Change: 22 Years of Peace and Friendship” gala, at the U.S. Ambassador’s residence. With this event, the Peace Corps in Romania celebrated the 22 years of cooperation and collaboration between Romanian and American governments through Peace Corps volunteers and employees. The gala included an interactive exhibition which presented some of the projects and cultural exchanges between Romanian American volunteers and the local community in which they lived and worked. Peace Corps brought in Romania, in the 22 years of the program, over 1,200 volunteers who worked in 230 communities across the country. Peace Corps will close the program in Romania in august 2013.
The event was opened by speeches held by Peace Corps Director in Romania, the U.S. Ambassador, Romanian government representative, the regional director of the Peace Corps and volunteers. Finally came a fair in which Peace Corps volunteers and Romanian partners were hosts in the 16 stands for the presentation of cultural exchanges. Over 200 guests visited the photo exhibition depicting the life and volunteer projects in Romania, demonstrations of painting eggs, a presentation of traditional costumes, dancing and interactive games.

Work Tribute The Peace Corps Gala was a tribute to the over 1,200 volunteers who served in Romania, their communities, partners and supporters. The event was set up to showcase the very best of what Romania has had to offer to the Peace Corps Community and how Volunteers have in return impacted Romania with projects and activities over the last 22 years of dynamic association. Organized on the grounds of the US Ambassador’s Residence in Bucharest, there where plenty of opportunities for guests to stroll, relax, and get a taste of what
the American - Romanian collaboration has produced. Laid out as an interactive fair, the event displayed 9 booths representing the major regions of Romania, interspersed with food and drink stands featuring both American and Romanian culinary favorites. I On the good Maramures land, the people are growing. The men too old to speak of the future and profit knew the good land, and when they spoke of it unturned their eyes watered for the land and the people that had left it and those left behind. It all went that way in the hills and down dales and took turns in on itself among all things half done. II The two, browned girls sat on their heels in the sun on the earth, soft from trodden clothes. Their eyes were glazed and ooze like sheep’s milk hardened in their nostrils. The horse flies attacked their unfeeling feet, wide and straight-toed, and clothing faded by the earth. The father rested against the jamb. He looked onto the unturned land that could never be turned, except for the dead, with eyes that saw the land as it was before him, to be crossed. There were things to be done before heading out pe sate. One of the girls shifted and sat on her side. She looked at the ground, dusted and drought brown. She drew an A in the dirt, and she turned her head around to her father. He kept on looking onto the unturned land, wondering where he should turn it. The girl went back to the way she was and put a hand in her sister’s lap. The children looked with dry, watery eyes at their hands petting the bloated belly of the dead, white horse. III The train bent along the riverbank and clothes, ragged and ribboned and twisted and tied by branches, slowly. There was a young woman in a sleeper. She let out muffled moans from under a pillow and sighs, chest rising to half her well-expecting bump. She was barefoot. Her grandmother sat in a seat which folds from the wall in the hall. She snapped her Ts and Ps in whispers over the Bible. It was a nice train to take when the sun remained, and lonely in the winter. In the fields, men scythed in the unspoken way of five lined in diagonal. One would trail off, and his scraping, sharpening blade or banging out of an edge echoed until heard no more. But he kept on. The wind would blow in the trees and leaves, half-dead along the margin, rustled against one another and showed their paler green undersides. Then there were the kids who wave at trains. Such eternal, involuntary ones. And the train kept on double-clicking along the bend and picked up after dark. It wouldn’t get to Bucharest until morning.

How it all began
Since 1961, the Peace Corps has shared America’s most precious resource with the world – its people. Peace Corps Volunteers serve in 75 countries in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Central and South America, Europe, and the Middle East. Collaborating with local community members, Volunteers work in areas like education, youth outreach and community development, the environment and information technology. 1992 after the abolition of communism and international disclosure of the terrible living conditions in orphanages. At the request of the Ministry of Education and in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, the first Peace Corps Project, the Social Work Project was launched to train staff in Romanian orphanages. Despite full government support, the presence of the Peace Corps Volunteers (PCVs) in the state run institutions did not prove effective as planned. Therefore, the second group of PCVs in 1993 was placed at universities with social work programs to assist them in complementing their theoretical instruction with a practicum oriented curricula. In over 22 years of presence in Romania, the Peace Corps worked with four main sectors of development such as English education, Youth development, community development and environmental education and awareness. Since 1992, there have more 1,200 Peace Corps Volunteers serving over 250 communities across Romania. Currently there are 46 Peace Corps Volunteers out of which more than 90% teach english in 40 counties throughout Romania. Besides teaching English, they engage students in secondary activities (non-formal education). Here is what one of the Volunteers in Maramures, Ester Dela, says about her english club. ”One of the things I had been trying to do with my English Club is promote volunteerism. I wanted to help the students see that they too can do important work that can make a difference in the community. Previously I was disappointed in their lack of enthusiasm when I first proposed that we do volunteer projects and I was met with the same concerns: Why should we help the community if we won’t get paid for it? Why should we care if others don’t? What difference can we make? Although many expressed these concerns, I decided that I wanted to give them an opportunity to volunteer in the hope that they could change their minds. So, in the Spring I applied for a Tree for Peace grant to plant 22 trees in our community and invited any members of the club to join me. I first described the tasks that were necessary for us to do: plan a location to plant the trees, clean the areas for planting, cut the overgrown grass and weeds in the proposed areas, collect planting materials, and finally, to create a planting event. As my students and I worked together to accomplish these tasks I was impressed by what I saw. The students were working together, communicating with one another were extremely dedicated to the task at hand. Needless to say I was impressed with their hard work and cooperation! After we finished our planting event I gave the students a feedback form to complete in which they described their thoughts about the project, what they learned and if their interest in continuing volunteer projects for the community in the future. I was surprised to find that all of the club members expressed that they enjoyed the project because they were doing something helpful for the school and the community 12

and the environment, and that this project was something that made their school look more beautiful. They also expressed that they enjoyed the social aspects of the project: collaborating, working in a team, and having
some fun with their classmates. All of them expressed interest in continuing other projects similar to this and more importantly, after this project they felt that volunteer work is important and CAN make a difference!”

THE COTROCENI PALACE
It is a part of the Cotroceni National Museum. The Cotroceni Palace, church and monastery reflect a three-century old history that interweaves political, military, diplomatic, religious and cultural aspects, with the general evolution of Romanian society. The palace was built in the 17th century by the Prince Serban Cantacuzino. The Cotroceni National Museum exhibits a rich range of objects of art, illustrative of the Romanian decorative art. The Cantacuzino space is most suitable for organizing presentations of old art objects that can only outline the exceptional artistic accomplishments of a distant epoch.
It is the second largest administrative building in the world (after the Pentagon) in terms of all-out surface: 330,000 m2. It was built between 1984 and 1989 by a team of architects led by Anca Petrescu. and was destined for the members of the Communist Party; Besides offices, Ceausescu planned to make personal living places, so the Palace’s surface would have been bigger. The museum is a component of the European family of Museums of Popular Art and Traditions. A national museum, under the Ministry of Culture’s patronage, it has an especially rich collection of objects, hosted in a Neo-Romanian style historical monumentbuilding close to Victoria Square. The museum developed a highly original museography honored in 1996 by receiving the EMYA – the European Museum of the Year Award. The originality of the exhibiting style is continued in the Museum’s publications, in actions such as the Missionary Museum, the Village School, concerts, conferences and exhibition openings. ever more popular in Bucharest and these are generally open quite late. There are plenty of nightclubs catering for all tastes and smart dress is not necessary, jeans are acceptable. Clubs and bars serve alcohol until 5 or 6 in the morning and the minimum age for drinking is 18. Despite much recent renovation a real sense of history remains, many of the older inns or taverns have become pubs and clubs, but walking around this area can still transport you into the past, to the true beginnings of the city and its nickname, ‘Little Paris’. Now you will find here coffee shops, restaurants and bars where you can drink a hot tea or a good coffee.
You can choose a bar where you will listen to traditional Romanian singers like Maria Tanase. The atmosphere is quite calm here in the night, perfect for relaxing with friends. As far as clubs are concerned, from electro to live rock, you will find anything you wish in Bucharest! They are the best and their secret is that they never let you stop dancing, all night you feel so good that you believe you are the greatest dancer in the world. When you visit Bucharest to find some fun, you will feel an explosion of happiness, everyone is friendly because everyone is dancing with a beer in their hand.
Many European travellers can testify that some of the greatest and cheapest nights can be had here. Lipscani, the historic centre of the town has witnessed a recent revival with many of the older clubs being refurbished or completely rebuilt. Many of these new venues would not seem out of place in Paris or London. Like the most International cities, Bucharest has a good selection of bars, clubs, cafes, theatres, casinos and many other places of entertainment. Other Bucharest districts are also quite animated, with lots of people on the street late into the night. If you want to have a perfect night, you can start with a romantic dinner in one of the restaurants around the old centre. “Caru` cu bere”, for instance, is one of the most representative restaurants of our capital, it is a true living legend and also one of the oldest beer houses in Bucharest. It was opened for the first time in 1879 and it is one of the few places in Bucharest where it seems that nothing has changed. After that, you can continue with a show or play at Rapsodia Theatre. Then… enjoy your night in a club or in a bar with your friends. There is a wide variety of bars and pubs scattered all over the city and it is not always easy to choose between Irish, English, Latino or the more exotic among the range of watering holes available. lthough there are some important aspects that have not changed in the Romanian Capital in the last years (sidewalks are still not clean, there are no bicycle tracks, there isn’t enough lighting on the streets, nor enough parking places), Bucharest occupies the 14th place among the top of European cities which are preferred by the citizens of other countries who live there, as Roxana Lupu tells in her article in “Evenimentul Zilei”, titled “The Capital, More and More Loved by Expats”. The city is more and more appreciated thanks to the quality of security, housing and health and this is the reason why expats want to work and even settle here, the same thing being true for another East-European city, Bratislava, the Capital of Slovakia, as shown in a study by ECA International, a Human Resource company. “There are better restaurants, more concerts by international stars, more shopping. Life has improved considerably”, says Tom Murray, who came to Romania 15 years ago and has become a successful businessmanin the textile industry. He also believes that, even if prices have gone up a lot recently, life is still cheaper here than it is in Western Europe or in the United States, and Bucharest has the charm of a European Capital. Nevertheless, in Tom’s opinion the cost of basic goods is a major problem. For the Romanians, as well as for the expats, the quality of life depends on the wages they earn. If the wage is one of thousands of Euros per month, they can say they live well, but if it is a middle income one, even an expat faces the tough realities of daily life, thinks Tom: “If you have money, you can do anything you want in Bucharest: you hire people to manage your daily business, you eat in the best restaurants, you travel overseas or to other Romanian cities on weekends.” Nevertheless, he thinks that Bucharest cannot be considered the most sophisticated European Capital yet. Another businessman, Christopher Troxler, who has lived in Romania for five years, fell in love with Bucharest as soon as he got here. “It was love at first sight”, he says. “I simply liked the atmosphere.” Copenhagen, the Capital of Denmark, holds the first place among the preferences of expats, shows the study mentioned above. In the top ten places are cities in Switzerland and Germany, such as Geneva, Basel and Bern, and respectively Dusseldorf, Bonn and Munich. The expats coming from Asia have their own top list: Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra, in Australia, as well as two regions, from Japan, Kobe and Yokohama. Hong Kong and Shanghai, in China, occupy places 15 and 78, respectively. In the Middle East, expats prefer Manama, the Capital of Bahrein, and Dubai and Muscat. Bagdad, the Iraqui Capital, holds the last place in the world, number 300, because of the precarious security level.

assage involves systematic stroking, rubbing and kneading of the soft tissues of the body in an effort to induce a state of total relaxation. Despite some misconceptions, massage has become more accepted as a means to relieve minor physical problems. Although massage has sometimes been discredited, by advocates of modern medicine, it has recently been growing in acceptance. Massage has been shown to help maintain stability and enhance performance in nearly all of the body’s major systems. The muscular, skeletal, circulatory, nervous and respiratory systems can be positively affected by massage. The theory behind massage is the relief of muscle tension, and that relaxation of the body will allow for a faster healing process. Massage can increase and improve circulation to damaged tissue areas. People who play sports know that it is important to stretch and relax muscles for peak performance, and the same idea underlies the massage process.
Perhaps the greatest benefit of massage, as any amateur can confirm, is the relaxing effect it can have on tense muscles. The smooth stroking motions and the kneading of muscles relieves tension, loosens joints and improves circulation, all of which are beneficial for good health. Of course it is recommended that people not replace necessary medical treatment with a massage. Sometimes medical conditions that could easily be cured by a simple medical treatment are identified as a simple tight muscle or something similar. Although massage does have positive medical benefits, in most cases it is not a replacement for modern medicine. The history of massage dates back almost as far as recorded history. For thousands of years some form of massage or the “laying on of hands” has been used to helpl the sick. For the ancient Greeks and Romans, massage was one of the principal methods of healing and relieving pain. s much as work and stress as may represent your usual day, as much as you may feel that you are lost between meetings, important decisions, projects and work plans, you
must admit that you sometimes think about possible moments of relaxation, with everything that might include. Whether a comfortable sofa suddenly comes to your mind, or you imagine yourself in front of a promising and dynamic TV or movie screen, or you think of the future coffee on a terrace with a dear companion, or new clothes to choose or to try on, the fast workflow is interrupted by such flashes. I would gather this entire complex into a single word: entertainment. There may not be many people who ask themselves “What does entertainment mean today”. MUST SEE IN BUCHAREST THE VILLAGE MUSEUM
Nestled on the shore of the Herastrau Lake, the museum displays 85 peasant homes, barns, churches and mills relocated there from all over Romania. Tall-roofed Transylvanian houses with beautifully crafted shingles sit alongside rustic wooden churches to form a unique neighborhood. The overall impression is that Romanian peasants take great pride in their work and homes. Everyday accessories: tools, butter-churns, hay forks, beer kegs and clothes are displayed inside the house. This museum can take a whole day to explore and, in fine weather, families settle down for picnics in the scenic grounds. The museum is hosted by the former Royal Palace and is the most representative art gallery in Romania. The Royal Palace was the official residence of the Romanian kings. Its current facade was given the finishing touches in 1937 when Carol II was King of Romania. The National Art Museum Palace is located in downtown Bucharest (in the so-called Revolution Square). The Palace displays an extensive collection of European and Romanian fine art. The European Art Gallery offers an overview of teh most important artistic movements that marked art history from the early Rennaissance till the first decades of teh 20th century. The Romanian Modern Art Gallery illustrates the development of Romanian fine arts from the first decades of the 19th century till the second half of the 20th century. During the early Middle Ages, Bucharest became a commercial center; important enough to enable the XIV century princes to build the Princely Court – nowadays known as “The Old Court” - which formed the development core of the medieval town. The first written mention of the name of “Bucharest” dates back to September 20, 1459: it appears on a document issued from the chancellery of the famous Prince Vlad Tepes (the Impaler). By the year 1599, a new Princely Court was built. Matei Basarab (1632-1654) renovated the Old Court. By 1640, because the prince’s relations with the Turks worsened, Matei Basarab moved his Capital back to the town of Targoviste. Bucharest still remained a princely residence. In May 1654, Prince Constantin Serban Basarab (1654-1658), Matei Basarab’s successor, left for Targoviste after a rebellion of his mercenary troops, and he ordered the Old Court to be set of fire. The Old Royal Court is an outdoor site that can be visited any time. THE ROMANIAN ATHENAEUM
Is a concert hall in the center of Bucharest and a landmark of the Romanian capital city. Opened in 1888, the ornate, domed, circular building is the city’s main concert hall and home of the “George Enescu” Philarmonic and of the George Enescu annual international music festival. It has the aspect of a Greek temple with Ionic columns at the entrance. The wonderful interior with round frescoes depicts important events in Romania’s history. Extensive reconstruction and restoration work has been conducted in 1992 by a Romanian construction company and restoration painter Silviu Petrescu, saving the building from collapse. Visiting hours: every day, unless concerts or rehearsals are held.

PIATA OBOR 5D : A huge covered market located behind the Bucur Obor Department Store at the intersection of Calea Mosilor and Calea Stefan cel Mare. Although the selection of goods is big, the market is crowded and appears dirty. Watch your pockets and bags. If you’re looking for a truly Romanian market experience, this is your spot. Pets, including aquarium supplies, are available, as are fishing needs (including live worms, poles, lures). Wooden and woolen goods, ceramics, clothing, as well as plants cut and growing, are available. A large pedigree dog and cat market at least once a month on the street nearest Mosilor is a fun experience. PIATA 1 MAI 5D : Located near La Fourmi on Ion Mihalache Blvd. It is a small market but has a good selection of fruit, vegetables and flowers. As with all the above markets, clothing, shoes, and household items for cleaning and cooking may also be found. Honey and other bee byproducts are a national pride of Romania and are found at all of these outdoor markets. PIATA DOROBANTILOR 5D : Located indoors on Calea Dorobantilor north of Calea Stefan cel Mare. It offers produce and flowers. The quality is better than Amzei, but the prices are olso higher. Out of season exotic fruits and vegetables can be found here. There are several other stores in this area. The meat market inside is particularly good.

Of course all is not back to “normal”, whatever that may mean. Yes, the construction industry seems to be back to building, and new Malls are readying for the Christmas Season, but unemployment is still pervasive, and the politicians are working on fresh austerity measures. Things are at a bit of a still stand, as Romania readies for Parliamentary elections in early December. Between referendums and elections this seems to be the one growth industry in the Country.

I see more people riding bicycles every time I come back to Bucharest. In typical independent fashion some of them avoid the painted bicycle paths. Also in typical fashion, some of those bicycle paths takeover the whole sidewalk, where it narrows. God forbid they should encroach on the roadway, which is reserved for cars. The Lipscani area, the old historic center of the City, is filled with new cafes

Perhaps the best time of the year. It’s still warm, sometimes too warm. The leaves on the trees are beginning to turn brown and peach and yellow, and the annual “Fair of Bread” is back in the National Arena Park. The sun is shining, and on the street you can see the conflict between people who dress according to the calendar, while others stroll in t-shirts. Its not just bread, farmers have come from all over the country, and you can eat your fill of various grilled meats and fresh home made cheeses. There is folk music and a few older people who still remember, dance in the crowd, while the high reaches of the new National Stadium can be seen in the distance.

My September visit was too brief to get a real feel for what is happening, but my regular taxi driver tells me that, for all the belt tightening, people are beginning to spend a bit more. The police are back to enforcing the “if you drink don’t drive” laws, so a taxi driver who works the night shift had a great Friday night. It’s Fall, the theaters are open, the Opera invites you.
