Timisoara, Sector 2, Braila, Tulcea and Oradea are the cities that have signed up in the race for the title of Green Capital of 2011. This year’s edition allows registering cities all over the country, not just the county capitals. “Team Green Umbrella congratulates the five cities that have announced registration shortly after announcing this year’s competition. We enjoy the fact that more and more mayors want the “ Green Capital of Romania” title. This is an evidence that environmental care as a partnership between local authorities and community has become more evident in recent years. Every town in Romania should aspire to that title, for future generations,” told us Alina Bratu, Green Umbrella coordinator. Until December 1, candidates who aspire to winning the title have time to complete the competition registration form, available free on the site www. umbrelaverde.ro, and then they will receive registration confirmation. The complete application file consists of section of the form that contains answers to questions about its contribution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, local transport, urban green areas, waste management, drinking water and local environmental strategy existence, and also the story of the city and a communication plan with a detailed communication strategy that the City Hall can develop in 2012 in order to support and celebrate the new title, the “Green Capital of Romania.” The jury who will evaluate the submitted files will be composed of representatives from the Ministry of Environment and Forests, from the company URBB - Tuborg Romania and from Promotions Special Events Romania agency. The Awards Gala will be held in Bucharest in February 2012 and for each category of registration will be designated a city winner. Of these three, “Green Capital of Romania” will be designated the city with the highest score obtained after the evaluation made by the jury. The winner will be promoted nationwide during 2012, as “Green Capital of Romania” and will have priority for development of all subsequent actions performed by Green Umbrella, with support from the Ministry of Environment and Forests.

Vintest – The National Wine Fair of Romania OCTOBER 27 TO 30, ROMAERO

Romania has exceptional wines, recognized by international specialists, but not sufficiently promoted nationwide and worldwide. The lack of promotion of the wine in Romania led to a low consumption compared to beer, despite the fact that wine is on the domestic and abroad list of foods. Wine producers, importers of accessories and wine quality specialists are those who must make a common front to promote Romanian wines and to educate consumers in the spirit of tradition that Romania has in the field, to pick up the wine at the rank that deserve. Vintest wishes to be the first salon devoted to the Romanian wine held to the international criteria standard. Business promotion of the direct or related to wine activities will lead to an economic growth of this sector and hence to a growth of the society. Educating people, especially the younger generation, to engage in the promotion of Romanian products, be it wine, or wine tourism areas it’s another must of this fair. Launched in 2005, the International Wine Fair VINVEST soon became a center of reference for the wine sector. Vinvest managed to convince through professionalism and consistency. The eight editions organized in Timisoara have created an unprecedented way for the Romanian wine, detaching it from all other similar events in the quality of the organization, becoming the first International Exhibition of Wines from Romania to European standards.

Vintest is organized on October 2730, in Romaero, in a 2,500 square meters exhibition area, with parking, easy access to public transport, subway, bus, etc. At Vintest will be held wine tastings, launches of new range of wines, gastronomic shows, “taste” competitions, contests and sweepstakes for professional audiences, media and guests, bartending - competition for waiters and bartenders and will be presented wine tourism offers, top wines - competition organized by the associations, delicious food - contests on gastronomic themes, pastry, confectionery, wine shop – where you may purchase the wines tasted in the stands, while the library will stimulate the tasting art and the tourism (store for gastronomy, wine and wine tourism guides). www.vintest.ro , Ph.: 0372-731-830, fax: 0372-870-579, office@vintest.ro,

Danube, My Everyday Love The night before I was almost deafen by the watts’ hell emitted by Prodigy at their Downtown Bucharest concert. At an early hour of the summer morning I embarked in the minibus provided by WWF Romania and left for an unknown location on the Danube. For Gircov, in Olt County, close to the confluence of the Olt River with Danube. I just heard about the WWF and its subsidiary in Romania, but I was now participating at the first action organized by the activists of the organization. I ask myself how I will interact with these enthusiast youth and what would I find at less than 200 km from Bucharest, on the Danube banks? WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) is one of the largest and most effective independent organizations that run international nature conservation projects. Worldwide, WWF works to stop the environmental degradation and help build a future in which humans live in harmony with nature. The Lower Danube, with a journey of 1,000 km, passing through Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine and Moldova, was identified by WWF as one of the most important regions of biodiversity in the world. The river hosts a variety of freshwater habitats, rare and endangered, and provides many valuable opportunities to support and revive the local lifestyle. It is also a region with a rich cultural heritage, the local way of life being closely interlaced with river’s life. Danube is one of the last large relatively undisturbed regions of Europe. The human intervention has destroyed over 80% of all wetlands of the Danube. Over the river and its tributaries have been built hydroelectric plants, dams, drainage systems, which has destroyed the relationship between floodplain habitats and river systems, and their ecological functions were affected.

6 Bucuresti what, where, when

www.bucurestiwww.ro

In 2000, the governments of the Lower Danube countries have recognized the need and responsibility to conserve and sustainably manage one of the most biodiversity regions in the world, signing Lower Danube Green Corridor Agreement. Since then it has succeeded in reconnecting with the natural flow of 6% in embanked areas of the Danube Delta and along the Lower Danube and concrete proposals for the reconstruction of an additional 8% of the agricultural areas, including the 7,349 square km along the Green Corridor of the Lower Danube in a system of national protected areas and designation of areas totaling 4,303 square km (excluding the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve) for inclusion in the European network of protected areas Nature 2000, conservation and management of forest and meadow islets, elaboration of the first integrated action plan for conservation of sturgeons in the Danube basin and other actions, many facilitated by WWF and adopted by the Council of Europe and the European Union. Furthermore, WWF, together with Environmental Protection Agencies in the counties of Olt and Teleorman organized in

early winter, at the confluence of the Olt and Danube Rivers, in the village Islaz, an action of planting more than 3 hectares of white poplar and white willow. The purpose of this activity was the creation of nesting and quiet areas for the pygmy cormorant population, the local community involvement and raising awareness about the ecological importance of these birds and the threats they are subjected. The project was part of the LIFE Nature “Trans-frontier conservation of the pygmy cormorants (Phalacrocorax pygmaeus) and the red ducks (Aythya nyroca) in key sites from Romania and Bulgaria” (in short, “Green Borders”). The destruction of the nesting areas of the pygmy cormorant and the red duck populations was identified as a major threat to both species, so that planting activity was among the actions that are implemented for their conservation. If Danube Delta pygmy cormorants and red ducks are protected by being in a biosphere restricted area, the population spread along the Danube, both in Romania and Bulgaria, is still under threat, under the impact of human activities. The landfill along the waters, excessive use of fertilizers in fisheries, the widespread tourism practice, all affect the quality of the habitats of the two species present along the Danube. The main objective of the “Green Border” project, with a duration of four years, is to provide favorable conditions for the conservation of the two species of birds, through the conservation and reconstruction of wetlands along the Danube used as feeding and nesting areas, reducing the damages on the fish farms produced by pygmy cormorants, but also training locals on the conservation status of species and ecological requirements of both of them. After about two hours of driving in the morning quiet we reached Gircov, in a quiet village, far from urban pollution of all kinds, and we found that we would participate in a celebration on the occasion of the Danube Day, river celebrated year after year in 19 countries across Europe, by 83 million people who are living in the Danube Basin and enjoy

The show has enjoyed the financial support of Garanti Bank, one of the WWF partners. I found out that both the red ducks and the pygmy cormorants are considered priority species for the European Union Life Nature program. It is estimated that more than 39,000 pairs of red ducks and less than 18,000 of pygmy cormorants are nesting in Europe. Almost one third live in Romania, and a few hundred in Bulgaria. A few cormorants we saw during the river tour on the Danube in the same morning. They are lucky they are not moving in other more friendly areas, and benefit from the WWF Romania activists and most recently the locals who begin to understand that they must live again in communion with the nature, as they did for millennia. And the one day love for the Danube River which runs at the edges of their yards should turn into a everyday love. the natural resources offered by the river. River floodplains provide many benefits, from water purification, to fishing and recreation, and rivers of Danube basin provide drinking water for 20 million people. WWF Romania has chosen to mark this day with the Gircov and Giuvarasti communities, two areas where the organization works the Green Borders project. It provides the framework for trans-boundary conservation in 11 Nature 2000 sites along the Danube in Romania and Bulgaria, which will ensure improvement in the rate of spawning for the red ducks and pygmy cormorants, both European protected species. In Romania, 175,000 people live in areas of the project Green Borders. 21 villages and 2 towns in the Danube floodplains will benefit the WWF conservation measures implemented to the benefit of nature and humans. For 2012, the project provides the reconstruction of 1,000 hectares of meadow, planting in key areas and the achievement of a sustainable fish farm model.

The Danube Celebration with the Cormorants’ Club

At Gircov, one of the 21 villages included in the Green Borders project, 80 children wished happy birthday to the river which it’s accompanying their life and enjoy their childhood. The WWF conservation projects

tradition reserve to the communities a major role in the project, much of the long-term success of WWF actions being guaranteed by the involvement of the local people. At Gircov, the Cormorants’ Club is the form in which children in the area show their support for the project. For several months, the 80 members have been initiated into the mysteries of ecology: they participated in bird watching sessions, to understand the two protected species which make them proud and attended presentations of the WWF and SOR experts (Romanian Ornithological Society). Because the Danube Day is the most important holiday for the Cormorants’ Club, children began to prepare for the moment since the spring. A group of artists took up the challenge launched by the WWF to offer the children free ballet, theater, drawing and photography weekly lessons. And, finally, the children offered to the public made up of relatives, villagers, the project partners as well as journalists arrived from Bucharest, a ballet performance, a multimedia theater and an exhibition of drawings, whose players have been the pygmy cormorants and the red ducks. For the event at the Cultural House Gircov was also present the folklore group Mugurasii Olt.

Young Romanian Designers: Diana Bobar and Florina Erimescu Young designers will always teach us the lesson of having a wider perspective, showing respect for our legacy, reviving images that seduced us throughout history - but also looking forward with courage, reinterpreting previous styles in an avant-garde approach. Such features shape up the portrait of one of Romania’s best up-and-coming fashion designers, making us confidently look towards the ambitious new generation in style. Her story gathers knowledge, determination, and the strength to improve as a self-thought, passion and why not, chance. By hearing her name, Romanian fashionistas (but not only they) are inspired by how lots of passion, talent, a solid objective and constant self analysis – all of them used in small, wise steps can build up a solid fashion brand.

A couple of years ago, Diana Bobar was a Fine Arts student, graduating in painting, who created one of the first Romanian fashion 8

blogs. One of her hobbies back then, which to a point contoured her soon to be discovered path, was searching for special vintage- retro garments in second hand shops located in Timisoara. After finding all these ‘fashion treasures’, she would organize amateur photo shootings, starring her model friend, which she would later upload on her blog, So Fash’on, which she continues to update. This coolhunting activity was linked to another hobby of hers - that of improvising garments from her mother’s dresses or her fathers’ unworn silk shirts. Such as a child’s play, Diana soon learned the basics in tailoring, a craft in which she improved using online tutorials! The positive reviews received from her followers, as she kept uploading photos of

her back-then amateur creations, encouraged Diana to work on an individual collection, which she sewed by using a borrowed sewing machine placed on a room heater, as she didn’t have a proper table for it. The enthusiastic feedback she received also generated her first orders, and therefore, her first sum of money gained to further invest in sewing machines and a proper table to place them on. Her first collection came out on January 1, 2008, gathered forty garments and was a collection of dresses proposed for the 2009 spring-summer season. With delicate and feminine chromatics including white, shades of pink, beige, light, marine blue and warm violet she focused on drapery, asymmetry, flounces and tucks. Tracing her sources, one would find the iconic garments that imposed drapery throughout history, starting from Patricians to South American dance dresses. Having this collection as a starting point, Diana would propose a delicate, feminine silhouette, sexy through its innocent appearance, evoking the lost and fascinating air of the most enchanting ages in history. Also, her trademark decoration, flounces and texture applications give the overall look a romantic, sophisticating and daring reinterpretation of classic styles. Known for her ‘made by measure’ tailoring and receptivity in listening to her clients’ desires and expectations, she travels on a monthly basis to Bucharest to meet, discuss and take orders from her customers. Besides this strategy, she managed to settle a solid distribution network, both with online as well as with offline retailers. Her gracious, feminine, playful and sometimes flirty style, imposed Diana as one of Romania’s most promising young fashion designers. As she has been receiving a positive feedback from her international readers on So

Fash’on also, it was only a matter of time until the Diana Bobar Design brand would grow. Therefore, in 2010, Diana excitedly closed impressive deals with buyers from Kuwait, the Netherlands and Australia, demonstrating that the fresh, bright vision of the young designer could also be appreciated in different and more mature fashion markets. Besides her activity as a fashion designer she also got to work as a stylist with appreciated Romanian artists, such as Mandinga, Flory from Chicanos, Fely. Diana’s media exposure grew more intense as the young fashion designer was featured in an inspiring Pepsi ad campaign, focused on people who managed to make their dreams come true. ‘I can turn every man into a paparazzo’ was stated as a slogan next to Diana’s confident smile. When it comes to meditating over her path to this moment, Diana confesses with a sincere modesty that her greatest joy and fulfillment as a fashion designer is to see her clients happy and confidently wearing a garment created by her. She says garments are best valued by attitude, as nothing is more important than to see clothes brought to life by their wearer. Contouring the essence of her work philosophy, the young designer tries to give one of the best advices any individual could receive: that of choosing what to do depending on one’s own wishes and not on what would impress others. Sharing since March 2010 an uptown workshop and showroom with Diana, we found one of the young fashion designer’s best friends who decided to channel her artistic vision towards jewelry and accessories. Florina Erimescu met Diana before her college graduation, when she chose the fashion designer to create her prom dress. This wasn’t only the beginning of their friendship and future collaboration, but also an important step in Florina’s accessories business establishment that would become a particular confirmation of the soon encountered success. Before following her steps as the name behind the Josephine jewelry and accessories brand, let’s get to meet Florina in order to better understand her passion, statement and inspiration. As she studied French since her first elementary school year, Florina has been

forever fond of France, its culture, history and lifestyle. A trip to Paris back in 2007 became a revealing experience, as after discovering a crystal and metal supplier and buying a couple of crystal packs, Florina set down on a bench and started creating her first brooch, that she has been keeping since, as a dear reminder of her debut. This new found passion started to be looked at more seriously, as Florina chose this craft as her marketing degree paper project when she graduated the Faculty of Economic Studies. The excellent feedback coming from the examination commission became a new impulse towards the establishment of a new brand, a step which was clear in 2008, when Florina closed distribution deals with various retailers. Josephine was the first name that came to her mind recalling France and its historical aristocratic heritage, that would match the designs she had been preparing. Besides evoking the noble, bohemian Parisian style, her creations reflect a continuous research on jewelry history and new techniques, imposing the Josephine brand through quality in design and materials. Some of her remarkable creations seduce through complexity and greatness and, as handmade jewelry, such designs require impressive patience to come to life. For some pieces, Florina had been working up to 8 hours in a row but as she confesses, her passion for what she does offers her great fulfillment. As a designer, Florina is concerned about trends but more than anything, she is inspired by the love for everything that surrounds a person. The impressive pieces become a part of their wearer’s appearance, a true statement through their sizes as well as through their style, and naturally complete the garments.

For her refined, unique jewelry, she pays great attention to the materials she uses, being among the few designers who focus this much on quality. Her creations, adored by brides and young women, are made with semiprecious stones, Swarovski elements, Bohemia glass, freshwater pearls, silver and bronze. Her crystal provider is based in a small French town; she settled for him after previously working with a Parisian Swarovski reseller. Florina imposed her romantic approach for accessories with her “Les Fleurs de Josephine” collection for which she used flowers as an inspiration to create some delicate yet spectacular pieces. The remarkable feature of these pieces is given by the use of veil, silk and lace to create impressive handmade flowers that stand out through their up to 50 fabric petals and through Swarovski crystals carried in the center. Such pieces may feature a detachable veil, following the future bride’s demands. The collection also includes some handmade silk roses that enchant though chromatics evoking the Versailles gardens. “Les Fleurs de Josephine” is completed by headpieces and brooches that follow the same aristocratic, refined style. When she launched her first bridal collection, Josephine Marriage, created using pure silk, Swarovski elements and freshwater pearls, Florina counted on her friend Diana Bobar to design the wedding dress worn by the campaign model. A young bride’s happiest day could be soon ennobled also by

Florina’s spectacular and sensitive jewelry and accessories that offer a complementary image by the delicacy of pearls and silk and refined daring contrast with Jet-black crystals, silver beads or violet stones. Even more so, as an open, approachable designer who wishes to contribute to a memorable day, Florina offers custom jewelry conceived taking into consideration the future bride’s expectations. As a daring curiosity, Florina’s bridal jewelry defy the famous superstition that stops future brides from wearing pearls on their wedding, an old belief ignored also by her clientele. Looking towards Florina, we find a talented bohemian spirit who adapted her fascination for a certain place, its stories and its culture, to compose a sensitive ode that values one’s natural beauty with distinction. www.bucurestiwww.ro

Feel the Rhythm There are an increasing amount of foreign people arriving in Bucharest to simply have fun and enjoy themselves. Many European travellers can testify that some of the greatest and cheapest nights can be had here. Lipscani, the historic centre of the town has witnessed a recent revival with many of the older clubs being refurbished or completely rebuilt. Many of these new venues would not seem out of place in Paris or London. Like the most International cities, Bucharest has a good selection of bars, clubs, cafes, theatres, casinos and many other places of entertainment. Other Bucharest districts are also quite animated, with lots of people on the street late into the night. If you want to have a perfect night, you can start with a romantic dinner in one of the restaurants around the old centre. “Caru` cu bere”, for instance, is one of the most representative restaurants of our capital, it is a true living legend and also one of the oldest beer houses in Bucharest. It was opened for the first time in 1879 and it is one of the few places in Bucharest where it seems that nothing has changed. After that, you can continue with a show or play at Rapsodia Theatre. Then… enjoy your night in a club or in a bar with your friends. There is a wide variety of bars and pubs scattered all over the city and it is not always easy to choose between Irish, English, Latino or the more exotic among the range of watering holes available. There are also traditional Romanian bars and restaurants. Cyber cafes are becoming

ever more popular in Bucharest and these are generally open quite late. There are plenty of nightclubs catering for all tastes and smart dress is not necessary, jeans are acceptable. Clubs and bars serve alcohol until 5 or 6 in the morning and the minimum age for drinking is 18. Despite much recent renovation a real sense of history remains, many of the older inns or taverns have become pubs and clubs, but walking around this area can still transport you into the past, to the true beginnings of the city and its nickname, ‘Little Paris’. Now you will find here coffee shops, restaurants and bars where you can drink a hot tea or a good coffee. You can choose a bar where you will listen to traditional Romanian singers like Maria Tanase. The atmosphere is quite calm here in the night, perfect for relaxing with friends. As far as clubs are concerned, from electro to live rock,

you will find anything you wish in Bucharest! They are the best and their secret is that they never let you stop dancing, all night you feel so good that you believe you are the greatest dancer in the world. When you visit Bucharest to find some fun, you will feel an explosion of happiness, everyone is friendly because everyone is dancing with a beer in their hand. The live music increases your adrenaline, the guitars, the amplifiers, the singer, all these go together to entice you to the dance floor. Techno, House, Garage and Latino are the popular sounds of Bucharest and, to a lesser extent, Hip Hop and Drum and Bass. For a special atmosphere you can choose a club located in an old building, like the ancient residence of Princess Margareta which is completely rearranged with a futurist design, the perfect location for a high level of comfort and relaxation (Pat Club - “pat” means “bed” in Romanian). www.bucurestiwww.ro

Copenhagen, Geneva or Bucharest An Expat’s Point of View

A

lthough there are some important aspects that have not changed in the Romanian Capital in the last years (sidewalks are still not clean, there are no bicycle tracks, there isn’t enough lighting on the streets, nor enough parking places), Bucharest occupies the 14th place among the top of European cities which are preferred by the citizens of other countries who live there, as Roxana Lupu tells in her article in “Evenimentul Zilei”, titled “The Capital, More and More Loved by Expats”. The city is more and more appreciated thanks to the quality of security, housing and health and this is the reason why expats want to work and even settle here, the same thing being true for another East-European city, Bratislava, the Capital of Slovakia, as shown in a study by ECA International, a Human Resource company. “There are better restaurants, more concerts by international stars, more shopping. Life has improved considerably”, says Tom Murray, who came to Romania 15 years ago and has become a successful businessmanin the textile industry. He also believes that, even if prices have gone up a lot recently, life is still cheaper here than it is in Western Europe or in the United States, and Bucharest has the charm of a European Capital. Nevertheless, in Tom’s opinion the cost of basic goods is a major problem. The things used by the middle class now carry the price of luxury goods, and the cost of utilities has increased dramatically. For the Romanians, as well as for the expats, the quality of life depends on the wages they earn. If the wage is one of thousands of Euros per month, they can say they live well, but if it is a middle income one, even an expat faces the tough realities of daily life, thinks Tom: “If you have money, you can do anything you want in Bucharest: you hire people to manage your daily business, you eat in the best restaurants, you travel overseas or to other Romanian cities on weekends.” Nevertheless, he thinks that Bucharest cannot be considered the most sophisticated European Capital yet. Another businessman, Christopher Troxler, who has lived in Romania for five years, fell in love with Bucharest as soon as he got here. “It was love at first sight”, he says. “I simply liked the atmosphere.” Copenhagen, the Capital of Denmark, holds the first place among the preferences B Bucuresti what, where, when

of expats, shows the study mentioned above. In the top ten places are cities in Switzerland and Germany, such as Geneva, Basel and Bern, and respectively Dusseldorf, Bonn and Munich. The expats coming from Asia have their own top list: Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra, in Australia, as well as two regions, from Japan, Kobe and Yokohama. Hong Kong and Shanghai, in China, occupy places 15 and 78, respectively. In the Middle East, expats prefer Manama, the Capital of Bahrein, and Dubai and Muscat. Bagdad, the Iraqui Capital, holds the last place in the world, number 300, because of the precarious security level.

Massage: Relaxation & Healing

M

assage involves systematic stroking, rubbing and kneading of the soft tissues of the body in an effort to induce a state of total relaxation. Despite some misconceptions, massage has become more accepted as a means to relieve minor physical problems.

muscles. The smooth stroking motions and the kneading of muscles relieves tension, loosens joints and improves circulation, all of which are beneficial for good health. Of course it is recommended that people not replace necessary medical treatment with a massage. Sometimes medical conditions that could easily be cured by a simple medical treatment are identified as a simple tight muscle or something similar. Although massage does have positive medical benefits, in most cases it is not a replacement for modern medicine.

The history of massage dates back almost as far as recorded history. For thousands of years some form of massage or the “laying on of hands” has been used to helpl the sick. For the ancient Greeks and Romans, massage was one of the principal methods of healing and relieving pain. Generally, if you are in good health and just feeling a little tense, a massage may be a good way to go..

Although massage has sometimes been discredited, by advocates of modern medicine, it has recently been growing in acceptance. Massage has been shown to help maintain stability and enhance performance in nearly all of the body’s major systems. The muscular, skeletal,

circulatory, nervous and respiratory systems can be positively affected by massage. The theory behind massage is the relief of muscle tension, and that relaxation of the body will allow for a faster healing process. Massage can increase and improve circulation to damaged tissue areas. People who play sports know that it is important to stretch and relax muscles for peak performance, and the same idea underlies the massage process. Perhaps the greatest benefit of massage, as any amateur can confirm, is the relaxing effect it can have on tense www.bucurestiwww.ro

interrupted by such flashes. I would gather this entire complex into a single word: entertainment. There may not be many people who ask themselves “What does entertainment mean today”. Once the word covered something far less complicated than today. It designated a way of spending spare time in a pleasant and relaxing way. But now, when everything is compacted into smaller and smaller time units, the appearance of things changes daily, and the idea of spare time is more and more vague and almost about to be extinct.

So it’s no wonder that anything that suggests spending time in a different manner than working can be considered entertainment. Especially if you leave your home for one, two or several days. What is called “business tourism” today does not exclude the desire for some time pleasantly spent. And once having arrived at a new destination, the search begins. The possibilities are, as many and as different, on all the levels and underground structures of a city, especially if we are talking about a Capital. A living, constantly moving and changing Capital, such as Bucharest, a town in action that offers many things, but also requires a lot of tenderness. So let’s take things one step at a time. A trip to an unknown place forces you to change the stereotype move with a slower walk, combined with gaping and watching new things. Music is everywhere. And you should listen to it. Whether it is the music in a bar, or the pocket of the kit bag filled with CD’s or an mp3 player hung around your neck, music is everywhere. For those who love concerts, while the clubs gather the most renowned DJ’s of the moment to satisfy all tastes,. For many people, nightlife means lifestyle. In the ancient centre of town we can find the greatest assembly of new and cosmopolitan places, for all tastes and pockets. There is also the Green Hours formula, a brand already, where theatre, books and jazz are served together with cocktails and exquisite drinks. Bucharest is still a Balkan fair, with the same old air that mixes the Orient with the Occident, with visible and invisible faces, but it is also a European city, where more and more people come to visit. Today we have reviewed what spending your spare time can mean, and also where and how you can do it. Starting with the next number, I shall stop longer on one of the pieces of this puzzle.

MUST SEE IN BUCHAREST THE VILLAGE MUSEUM

Nestled on the shore of the Herastrau Lake, the museum displays 85 peasant homes, barns, churches and mills relocated there from all over Romania. Tall-roofed Transylvanian houses with beautifully crafted shingles sit alongside rustic wooden churches to form a unique neighborhood. The overall impression is that Romanian peasants take great pride in their work and homes. Everyday accessories: tools, butter-churns, hay forks, beer kegs and clothes are displayed inside the house. This museum can take a whole day to explore and, in fine weather, families settle down for picnics in the scenic grounds. Visiting hours: Nov.-Apr.: 09:00 - 17:00., May-Oct.: 09:00 19:00, every day, including Monday THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF ART

The museum is hosted by the former Royal Palace and is the most representative art gallery in Romania. The Royal Palace was the official residence of the Romanian kings. Its current facade was given the finishing touches in 1937 when Carol II was King of Romania. The National Art Museum Palace is located in downtown Bucharest (in the so-called Revolution Square). The Palace displays an extensive collection of European and Romanian fine art. The European Art Gallery offers an overview of teh most important artistic movements that marked art history from the early Rennaissance till the first decades of teh 20th century. The Romanian Modern Art Gallery illustrates the development of Romanian fine arts from the first decades of the 19th century till the second half of the 20th century. Visiting hours: Wednesday through Sunday 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. (May - September) 10 a.m - 6 p.m. (October - April) Closed: Monday, Tuesday THE OLD ROYAL COURT

During the early Middle Ages, Bucharest became a commercial center; important enough to enable the XIV century princes to build the Princely Court – nowadays known as “The Old Court” - which formed the development core of the medieval town. The first written mention of the name of “Bucharest” dates back to September 20, 1459: it appears on a document issued from the chancellery of the famous Prince Vlad Tepes (the Impaler). By the year 1599, a new Princely Court was built. Matei Basarab (1632-1654) renovated the Old Court. By 1640, because the prince’s relations with the Turks worsened, Matei Basarab moved his Capital back to the town of Targoviste. Bucharest still remained a princely residence. In May 1654, Prince Constantin Serban Basarab (1654-1658), Matei Basarab’s successor, left for Targoviste after a rebellion of his mercenary troops, and he ordered the Old Court to be set of fire. The Old Royal Court is an outdoor site that can be visited any time. THE ROMANIAN ATHENAEUM

Is a concert hall in the center of Bucharest and a landmark of the Romanian capital city. Opened in 1888, the ornate, domed, circular building is the city’s main concert hall and home of the “George Enescu” Philarmonic and of the George Enescu annual international music festival. It has the aspect of a Greek temple with Ionic columns at the entrance. The wonderful interior with round frescoes depicts important events in Romania’s history. Extensive reconstruction and restoration work has been conducted in 1992 by a Romanian construction company and restoration painter Silviu Petrescu, saving the building from collapse. Visiting hours: every day, unless concerts or rehearsals are held.

MARKETS IN BUCHAREST

One of the unique and more pleasurable forms of food shopping in Bucharest are the outdoor markets. Due to transportation difficulties, supplies are often copious at one market and non-existent at another. Of the markets listed here, Amzei market has the best selection and prices. It is advisable to bring your own shopping bags when shopping at the outdoor markets.

PIATA OBOR 5D : A huge covered market located behind the Bucur Obor Department Store at the intersection of Calea Mosilor and Calea Stefan cel Mare. Although the selection of goods is big, the market is crowded and appears dirty. Watch your pockets and bags. If you’re looking for a truly Romanian market experience, this is your spot. Pets, including aquarium supplies, are available, as are fishing needs (including live worms, poles, lures). Wooden and woolen goods, ceramics, clothing, as well as plants cut and growing, are available. A large pedigree dog and cat market at least once a month on the street nearest Mosilor is a fun experience. PIATA 1 MAI 5D : Located near La Fourmi on Ion Mihalache Blvd. It is a small market but has a good selection of fruit, vegetables and flowers. As with all the above markets, clothing, shoes, and household items for cleaning and cooking may also be found. Honey and other bee byproducts are a national pride of Romania and are found at all of these outdoor markets. PIATA DOROBANTILOR 5D : Located indoors on Calea Dorobantilor north of Calea Stefan cel Mare. It offers produce and flowers. The quality is better than Amzei, but the prices are olso higher. Out of season exotic fruits and vegetables can be found here. There are several other stores in this area. The meat market inside is particularly good.

Make sure you get a signed receipt when buying antiques in Romania. Ask about an export permit as well. Galeria Numismatica 7D : Coins, medals, banknotes-expertise & sale. 35-37, Academiei St.

• LUDWIG GELOBTER

Dear Reader, After a long hot summer, fall and more comfortable weather are in sight. As the fall “season” begins, Bucharest will have a whole range of cultural offerings for you. The most important of course is the Enescu Music Festival, which we describe in more detail elsewhere in the magazine. Besides the regular theater and opera seasons, this fall Bucharest will play host to a number of International Stars who have made Bucharest a regular stop on their “world tours”. Despite the economic malaise, which continues with no end in sight, we seem to have thousands and tens of thousands of people who are able and willing to spend from 100 to 1,000 Lei for a ticket to see and hear their favorite entertainers. But do not limit yourself to city events. Fall is the perfect season for an excursion to scenic Prahova Valley. Not only can you take nature walks along uncrowded mountain paths, but we can arrange a visit and lunch at a vineyard, where you can taste the young wines, and pick-up some bargains to take home. A visit to our Black Sea Coast will also be more enjoyable now, without the

vacationing summer crowds, but with pleasant weather and no waits in line for the relaxing mud baths. If you have the additional time a couple of days in the Danube Delta, one of nature’s wonders will be most rewarding. Bucharest Tours, our tour division, can arrange it all professionally at a moderate cost. I now want to turn to another side of Bucharest life, which may be unknown to you if you do not speak the language. It is probably because world and domestic economic news are so dismal, but our media, whether it be newspapers TV or ‘on-line’ seem to be pre-occupied with scandals surrounding the personal lives of prominent people. Whether it’s a divorce, plastic surgery, or legal problems, or some natural calamity, this is what they feature, and this is what the viewers/readers seem to want. Yet, in my view, Romania is in severe economic difficulties, exacerbated by the woes of the European Union, which we worked so hard to join. I have not seen any serious solutions advanced, as our politicians continue to muddle through crisis after crisis, looking for a ‘bail-out’ or a ‘hand-out’ to help us survive. It seems that our future depends on the economic recovery and growth of the “big three” Germany, France and the UK, and we count on the “trickle down” economic theory, which has not really worked in the past. I do not want to end this on a depressing note. So keep in mind Christmas is just around the corner, with parties, gifts and ski week-ends, and of course the New Year is sure to bring good news. So be full of optimism and enjoy your visit! Ludwig Gelobter, Publisher lgelobter@hotmail.com
