Even with small turns of weather, summer installed itself in Bucharest and the city is much more enlightened. The beautiful Bucuresti women have of course their merits, the fact is that our self-confidence is significantly increased! And if it is summer and we have more free time, a beer with our friends is appreciated of course. Our habits return to normal and we begin to prefer meeting our friends instead of watching the TV screen. City terraces testify that I am not the only one who thinks so. The business is meaningful for the owners of such “entertainment places.” From the older terraces rose in time elegant restaurants allover the city. But is not the role of these lines to give an economical judge. I just try to enjoy along with tens of thousands of Bucharesters that we can meet with our friends for a beer. I am glad that young people are also on the terraces, preferring them instead to computer games rooms, ‘mechanical’ games... To the terrace we put together or dismantle almost everything - politics, inter-season soccer, business, small or large, a summer love and the love of a lifetime... We have or we do not have money to go to beaches, to mountains or in the islands, for a beer at the terrace we find the necessary resources in our pocket or in friends’. That’s why friends are friends to pay us a beer! Do not mess with Bucharest habits! If he didn’t take his beloved with him, she’s forgotten at a beer with friends. From this point of view, the terrace meetings of all kinds, both uniand bi-sexual, the problem is your lover has to come after you if she wants to fully recover you only for her! With as many impatient for a terraces and a beer, turned up the terraces “enclave” in Bucharest - Old Center of the City. Who has not opened yet a place on Selari, Smardan, Lipscani, Gabroveni streets... almost doesn’t exist. All restaurants and pubs owners have opened “branches,” feeling the business... And in terms of consumers, unless you show yourself in the Old Center you do not exist! Dorobanti became old-fashion, crowded terraces and places in the Old City calls us now. Some arrive even with their motorcycles to show them, the advantage of moving on two wheels between cars made barriers! We expose everything! But I’m already thirsty and my friends call me. See you at a beer!

Green Cadastre of the Capital Recently, was implemented in Bucharest the computerized system for recording of the green spaces inside the urban area. Under various names (“Green cadastre”, “cadastre vert”, “urban forest inventory,” “urban tree inventory,” “Baumkataster” etc.), this system is in place and functioning in many cities around the world, so far not in Romania. General Mayor Sorin Oprescu, commented the “Green Registry”, telling us: “We begin to create tools that is essential to use. So far were just words. Through this green cadastre we can do monitoring, inform the mayors of the sectors and last but not least we will be able to actively monitor that will check and, why not prevent, deforestation. This is the first time that all the green areas have been identified in the Capital. This is the Green Cadastre of Bucharest.” In terms of EU directives, under which local authorities are required to ensure within the urban land an area of green space of 20 sqm / capita to 31 December 2010 (minimum 26 sqm / capita by 31 December 2013), the mayor explained that, currently, green area per capita in Bucharest is 23.21 sqm. Regarding the possibility of increasing green space in the capital area, the mayor explained that “we consider greening the banks of Dambovita, the project carried out by European funds. Only by doing so we would gain 499 hectares of green space.” As the number of trees in Bucharest, on over 4,500 hectares of green spaces, it slightly exceeds 1.7 million, sector one of Bucharest being the greenest and sector five the worst in this regard. If for the whole metropolis are 0.88 trees per capita, the sector one stands at a 2.44 figure.

For the sixth consecutive year in the “George Enescu” Square takes place the cultural marathon Bucharest Music Film Festival. The event was designed so that the pleasant atmosphere to be completed by the souvenir stands and a playground for children where they can explore at will the “Pirates’ ship”. The program includes various moments: four pairs of professional dancers dance on the Viennese waltzes, on the specially designed

Judas Priest return to Romania in a concert as part of “Epitaph” tour, last of the over 40 years career of the band. The festival ends with the film “Symphony no. 8 - Gustav Mahler.”

Cuban music legend, Omara Portuondo, with Buena Vista Social Club Orchestra, returns to Bucharest on July 30, for a concert of exception in an LIVE TM event to be held at the Theatre Summer Herastrau. Champion for Romania JULY 9, ROMEXPO EXHIBITIONS CENTRE

Romanian boxer Lucian Bute will defend his IBF world champion Super-Middleweight title for the eighth time, against Frenchman Jean-Paul Mendy. The French, 37-year-old, is unbeaten in his professional career (29 wins, 1 draw). Bute’s game could start at around 23:00 hours requested by the American television which covers the gala. Lucian Bute, the famous Romanian Super-Middleweight boxer, world champion in IBF version became a professional boxer in 2003, signing a contract with the Canadian club Interbox. His record is 28 victories in 28 matches, 23 by KO. He lives in Montreal, being coached by Stephane Larouche. Bute is the third Romanian who won a professional world title after Leonard Doroftei and Mihai Leu. The gala will start at 18:30 and will include seven matches, including:

The Romanian Boxing Federation president, Rudel Obreja, contacted Donald “Don” King, now aged 79, to invite to Lucian Bute’s gala from Bucharest. Don King is likely to come to Bucharest to watch Bute, under contract with Interbox, to promote him in America. The Romanian Boxing Federation Box tries to bring both Evander Holyﬁeld and Lennox Lewis in Bucharest. In total, about 10,000 tickets are on sale, and if they will be sold, the gala “Champion for Romania” will register a record audience for a national sporting indoor event held. Bike-sharing Project for Employees More and more private companies encourage the physical activities and thus a healthier lifestyle. Here is the latest example. Intesa Sanpaolo Bank Romania launched this summer the ﬁrst free bike-sharing project for employees working in the Central Bank from Arad and Bucharest. For the pilot phase of this project, implemented at regional level by the Intesa Sanpaolo Group, the bicycles have been provided by Biciclop, the ﬁrst physical and online store from Romania which has for sale only city-bikes.

Through this program, Intesa Sanpaolo and Intesa Sanpaolo Bank Romania Group offer to over 250 employees of the Central Bank an alternative to current modes of transportation, encouraging the physical activities and thus a healthier lifestyle. The bicycles were chosen from the Biciclop offer, so that they should fit to the traffic conditions in the city - the model of bicycle is universal, city-type bike with aluminum frame and three speed. Bikes have a unique and cheerful aspect, due to customization in colors derived from the bank’s logo and designs of various sizes, which also provides better visibility in traffic. The Bucharesters, although they are citizens of a European metropolis, need to be reminded from time to time their roots of the Romanian folk tradition, much modified by the urban environment and mostly forgotten. Even foreign tourists of the city need to get a small scent of the Romanian tradition, to find out that the Capital is not the only place worth to visit in Romania.

Bucuresti City Hall, through CreArT – The Centre for Creation, Arts and Tradition of Bucharest, invited us end-June, us the Bucharesters still in the city, but also all the guests of our metropolis, to welcome for the ﬁfth year in a row the International Folk Festival Music and Traditions in Cismigiu. The event opened with a great parade of the international and Romanian folk costumes. Over 500 people marched on the route: the Romanian Athenaeum (George Enescu Square) - Calea Victoriei – the Military Circle - Regina Elisabeta Blvd. - Cismigiu Park, attracting attention from people of Bucharest for the event. The program of the festival has been presented by Claudia Popa - International Folk Festival Director, Cornel Todea - Director, Stan Elise - TV Producer, and singers Maria Ciobanu and Floarea Calota. www.bucurestiwww.ro

“This year the theme was unity through diversity. The expression of specific acts of culture with different specificities builds bridges of communication between people who do not necessarily belong to the same community,” told us Claudia Popa. The festival included three main sections: folklore shows, crafts fair (40 boxes with traditional Romanian objects) and a gourmet space. Cismigiu was animated throughout the weekend with a craftsmen fair, children’s theater, folkloric songs and dances of Romanians and the national minorities, Ovidiu Lipan Tandarică and Maria Buza special recitals, and of some ensembles from Georgia, Greece, Mexico, Serbia, Turkey and Ukraine. “This year International Folk Festival, we bring back to the audience from Bucharest traditions from all over the country and from abroad. We intend not only to give back the identity of the village in urban areas, but to integrate authentic tradition in the great European cultural circuit,” continued Claudia Popa. The manifestations offer was really rich: international and Romanian folk ensembles, ensembles of minorities and national communities, renowned singers, bands and groups of children. The cultural project also included workshops for children, ethno-cinematheque and carriages and pony rides in specially designated areas. Events were held between 10:00 – 22:00, and entrance was free. The International Folk Festival “Music and Tradition in Cismigiu” is the only event of its kind in the south of Romania, the presence on stage of more than 1,000 artists representing national and international recognition of their value. Personal Story of an Indian Artist in Bucharest • Interview with Adity Chakravarti, Painter, Sculptor, and Poet

- Between Fact and Fiction, a theatre-dance performance on the poem of Adity Chakravarti and music by Cristian Stanciu, starring Dana Porlogea, Monica Florescu, Cristina Lilienfeld, Petre Voicu, Bogdan Nechifor, Aura Goia, Cristina Constantinescu and Florentina Constantin. Really impressed by this works and the performance I decided to continue the talk with Adity Chakravarti. Bucuresti What, Where, When: I must tell you from the beginning you are one of the few persons in the expat community with artistic interests that I met, and as I noticed in your artistic CV, there are almost 22 years since your first exhibition. Tell us more about your first “artistic years”. Adity Chakravarti: Well, 1989 was my first exhibition… I trained in art in New Delhi, in South Delhi Polytechnic, I studied commercial art, graphic design. Then, after I married my husband and we moved to China, that was our first posting, in China I studied Chinese painting for three years and that is when I really started to paint. It was actually in China that I had my very first exhibition because our teacher, he did the exhibition along with the students. It was a final presentation of all the students. Then we moved back to New Delhi, and in 1989 I had my very first exhibition on my own. That is how I moved from commercial art to painting. Then after, it’s carried on this whole process of moving from place to place and learning more in every place, working more in every place, absorbing so many things from each place. I think it has been an extremely enriching experience for me.

Adity Chakravarti, the wife of the Indian ambassador in Bucharest, has lived on diﬀerent continents. This has given her the unique chance of being in diﬀerent cultures, where sights, sounds and smells make an amazing collage. She has absorbed the art and culture of these places and interacted with its artists. This is what her work showed us. Images and symbols weave in and out of her paintings. Vibrant colours which tell their own story. Together they form visuals that are in complete harmony and engage the viewer in a dialogue.

The actual exhibition was one of the rare and good chances to feel the tastes of diverse cultures mingled so as to produce a

BucWWW: In every place you lived for a while, beside studying the local art, did you also interacted with the artists? A.C.: Always, in every single place! In fact it takes a bit effort, when you move to a new place it takes so much effort to start, from learning about the artists community, to reach out to them… because nobody knows you. But I did that each time. In all this places people learn in different ways, you get to know so many things, from different cultures. How they work, how they present, how they sell… BucWWW: So you also studied the local art… A.C.: In every single place. In the moment you interact with the artist of the place, I know what they are doing, it is contemporary art but it has its own flavor. They have something to offer by being what they are.

BucWWW: What was new in this last exhibition? A.C.: What was new was the sculpting part. The sculptures were completely new and

Scientists tell us there is no colour in this world, We see colour only because our brain tells us to. The Gita, the ancient Indian scripture, Says there is nothing real in this world, We perceive it as real only because our brain tells us to. I go back to the time when my son was three, He would play with my husband, full of glee. My husband was a horse- it was pretence Galloping and rearing, in sequence. As he reared up one time, facing my son, My son stared and screamed: ’It is not fun!’ ‘It is not my father, it is a mad horse...’ And he screamed and cried with such great force. What was it that made him cry like that? In this case, what was fiction had become fact. They say a mirage in a desert you can see An illusion of a water pond when thirst does not let you be. Scientists say it is a light ray that starts from a real pond, That ray, passing through air, forms an image beyond. The image is not real so it is fiction, The pond is real so it is a fact. So what is in fact fiction is really a fact. A month ago when my daughter was here, We had a morning full of laughter and cheer. Later, walking outdoors and just for fun, Holding hands, we smiled and broke into a run. Wait! That exact moment I had already seen! Where? When? It must have been in my dream!

What was in my dream could not have been fact, Yet, what was fiction was now a fact. A few days ago, riveted by an image I am, On a stained glass window of a half human half ram. The computer specialist who only on one occasion I meet, Appears in my dream half computer specialist half ram – a figure strangely complete. The dream continues in the colour sepia, Who is in it? Certainly looks like me. I stand on a podium, arms outstretched, performing a balancing act! On each arm stands a glass of wine, Wobbling, splashing, what? Am I also walking on a piece of stretched twine ? Early morning I open my eyes, I look around, take stock of my life. It was not really fiction in my dream that I saw, It was simple truth without a flaw. Every single day I perform this strange balancing act. It is certainly not fiction, it is a fact. The T.V. screen flickers in the dark. What was it? An explosion? A volcanic eruption? I see babies cry while dead mothers lie, As I drink my tea after dinner. Their lives turned upside down, the Roma are returned to town. It is only a TV box, just images inside, I yawn, finish my tea, turn in for the night. That was it. For me there was no contradiction, I had just perceived fact as though it were fiction. Scientists tell us there is no colour in this world, We see colour only because our brain tells us to. Adity Chakravarti

Adity Chakravarti, is an artist from India now resident in Bucharest. She has lived, painted and exhibited in countries around the world including Tanzania, Canada, China, Switzerland, Oman, Romania and her home India. She studied art at the South Delhi Polytechnic, New Delhi. She also studied and painted under B.D. Pande of the Lucknow College of Art, India and under Xue Shi Qi of the China Academy of Fine Art, Beijing, China. Adity Chakravarti has lived on different continents. This has given her the unique chance of being in different cultures where sights, sounds and smells make an amazing collage. She has absorbed the art and culture of these places and interacted with its artists. The vibrant blues of Lapis lazuli and turquoise, and the reds and oranges of coral take you on a trip through her native India. The shards of glass in Adity’s kaleidoscope move and regroup to form new images and colours from her current home, Romania. Nuns, monks, churches and arches dominate her canvas. Her colours move back to turquoise, coral and gold, yet this time reminiscent not of India but that of timeless Maramures in Romania in autumn. Another recent set of paintings have forms that are half human, half animal. Brilliant colours are used in layers giving the impression of old jeweled tapestry. Adity paints on fragmented panels of wood and makes interesting use of the material. The edges are often burnt and frayed and little patterns carved out. Her recent use of gold foil and the Cyrillic script used for texture strongly reminds one of the wood and glass icons of Romania. She has given another dimension to her art by painting on wood boxes, big and small, and on screens. Her newest creation is small sculptures that she is offering as jewelry. Inspired by her own paintings she fashions Ram’s horns, shells and leaves and twigs, put together in different shapes, textures and movement. The pieces are coloured in myriad hues of blues and terracotta, often covered with tarnished gold foil, again giving the impression of old jeweled tapestry. She fashions necklaces and brooches. She finds that this direct relationship that her art has with its observer, in this case the wearer, gives her art a unique dimension.

something I was doing after more than 30 years… And from the sculptures, which came from the paintings of Amun Ra, I was playing around and I kept making smaller forms of the same sculptures and that became jewelry! Some of the pieces I sold now it was for an auction and all the proceeds went to Save the Children Fund.

ﬁrst response was that she found it absolutely fantastic an told me I must do something with this. And that is how the dance happened after that. I felt very encouraged and I showed it to more people and they connected somehow to it. Someone told me “You can see what is written,” so I was very encouraged and I thought to express it in a dance.

BucWWW: You also write poetry or this special work was an “accident”? A.C.: It’s not that I’m a serious writer, it just came from my thoughts and my life, from myself… I have a friend Romanian-American, teaching at the Georgetown University, she is a very talented writer. I sent my poem to her on e-mail, just because I wrote it, and the

BucWWW: The dancers had the freedom to play on it, or you worked together for this result? A.C.: When I had the latest exhibition at Muzeul Taranului (the Peasant’s Museum), on the opening evening there were two of this young dancers. They danced on my poem and we have done it together. So this last

dance performance was built on that initial performance, but the choreography is entirely by this group. BucWWW: For how much time are you in Romania? A.C.: We have been here now for almost four years. In October it will be four years for us. BucWWW: And how much you had the chance to visit Romania? A.C.: A lot. In fact the first set of paintings I made after we visited Maramures, in 2008 autumn. When I returned suddenly everything came together. It is such a beautiful country, from Maramures, to Oradea, to Bucovina. It’s a strange thing that happen when you travel, you take little impressions that you store in your mind and then you start painting some of this images. I like the most Maramures and the interior of the Orthodox churches here, which I find extremely intimate and nice, beautifully painted, this candle lights, people stand in groups… in Romania it was the first time I saw Orthodox churches. I feel that is something about all these in my paintings, in my art, my colors. I absorb a lot from everybody and from everywhere. BucWWW: You paint at home? A.C.: Yes, I am fortunate to have enough place in this house, and I use three rooms upstairs. A great luxury for myself! BucWWW: You lived in so many places of the world. How do you feel in Bucharest? How do you see the city? A.C.: It’s very interesting to stay in this region of Europe, which is Europe, but at the periphery. When we came here we took this as a posting because we have never seen this part of the world. We wanted to be in East Europe to see it, so we consciously chose to come here. I found this place a lot more relaxed and the people extremely friendly, very helpful. Both my husband and I have really appreciated. I like this “disorganized quality” because I am from a “disorganized” society, from India, so I am comfortable! BucWWW: And comparing the city with the cities you have seen… A.C.: We like to walk in this area (Dorobanti) and in Cotroceni area, and we like the beautiful houses we find. It’s an incredible number of beautiful old houses and also churches. My family for instance who came to visit us, my uncle, my sister, my brother-in-law, all of them have enjoyed Bucharest so much… They all visited Istanbul and Athens before coming here and this is the place they liked the most! 99% of the Beer from the Local Production

The unstable economic environment in 2010 resulted in a decrease of the beer market by 3.5% over the previous year, reaching a total volume of 17 million hectoliters. In the last two years the beer market declined by 16% compared to 2008, the year when the beer

sales volume reached a maximum quota of 20.2 million hectoliters. Beer consumption per capita in 2010 recorded a value of 78 liters, continuing the descending trend started in 2009 and proving the fact that the economic situation has aﬀected consumers and their consumption habits. The beer producers members of “Brewers of Romania” Association – Bergenbier, Heineken Romania, Romaqua Group, United Romanian Breweries and Ursus Breweries despite the diﬃcult situation, have invested 51 million Euros last year and the contribution to the state budget through various taxes (excise, VAT, personal taxes and social insurance contributions) has reached 270 million Euros, up by 7 million Euros compared with 2009. Consumer’s preferences in terms of packaging were kept constant: PET holds a percentage of 49.3%, 31.7% bottle, the can is 16% and 3% the beer on draught.

„Brewers of Romania” Association was established in 2004. The current members are ﬁve of the largest beer producers in Romania and, starting 2011, the most important producers of hops and malt, the raw

material required for all beer, have joined the Association. The ﬁve companies members of the “Brewers of Romania” Association reached a total volume of 15.3 million hectoliters in 2010. In the 10 beer factories located in several cities all over the country, the Association’s members oﬀer a total of over 4,100 jobs. The beer industry generates a total number of 96,400 employees, in its factories and also in related sectors such as hospitality, retail, suppliers and distributors.

Since January 2008, the organization is a member of the “Brewers of Europe” Association, considered the voice of the European beer industry in front of various international institutions and organizations. Founded in 1958, in Brussels, the organization has today 27 members and represents the interests of approximately 4,000 producers of the beer industry in Europe. Moreover, the Brewers of Europe Association represents and defends the interests of over 2.5 million people who owe their jobs to production and beer selling.

Feel the Rhythm There are an increasing amount of foreign people arriving in Bucharest to simply have fun and enjoy themselves.

Many European travellers can testify that some of the greatest and cheapest nights can be had here. Lipscani, the historic centre of the town has witnessed a recent revival with many of the older clubs being refurbished or completely rebuilt. Many of these new venues would not seem out of place in Paris or London. Like the most International cities, Bucharest has a good selection of bars, clubs, cafes, theatres, casinos and many other places of entertainment. Other Bucharest districts are also quite animated, with lots of people on the street late into the night. If you want to have a perfect night, you can start with a romantic dinner in one of the restaurants around the old centre. “Caru` cu bere”, for instance, is one of the most representative restaurants of our capital, it is a true living legend and also one of the oldest beer houses in Bucharest. It was opened for the ﬁrst time in 1879 and it is one of the few places in Bucharest where it seems that nothing has changed. After that, you can continue with a show or play at Rapsodia Theatre. Copenhagen, Geneva or Bucharest An Expat’s Point of View

lthough there are some important aspects that have not changed in the Romanian Capital in the last years (sidewalks are still not clean, there are no bicycle tracks, there isn’t enough lighting on the streets, nor enough parking places), Bucharest occupies the 14th place among the top of European cities which are preferred by the citizens of other countries who live there, as Roxana Lupu tells in her article in “Evenimentul Zilei”, titled “The Capital, More and More Loved by Expats”. The city is more and more appreciated thanks to the quality of security, housing and health and this is the reason why expats want to work and even settle here, the same thing being true for another East-European city, Bratislava, the Capital of Slovakia, as shown in a study by ECA International, a Human Resource company. “There are better restaurants, more concerts by international stars, more shopping. Life has improved considerably”, says Tom Murray, who came to Romania 15 years ago and has become a successful businessmanin the textile industry. He also believes that, even if prices have gone up a lot recently, life is still cheaper here than it is in Western Europe or in the United States, and Bucharest has the charm of a European Capital. Nevertheless, in Tom’s opinion the cost of basic goods is a major problem. The things used by the middle class now carry the price of luxury goods, and the cost of utilities has increased dramatically. For the Romanians, as well as for the expats, the quality of life depends on the wages they earn. If the wage is one of thousands of Euros per month, they can say they live well, but if it is a middle income one, even an expat faces the tough realities of daily life, thinks Tom: “If you have money, you can do anything you want in Bucharest: you hire people to manage your daily business, you eat in the best restaurants, you travel overseas or to other Romanian cities on weekends.” Nevertheless, he thinks that Bucharest cannot be considered the most sophisticated European Capital yet. Another businessman, Christopher Troxler, who has lived in Romania for five years, fell in love with Bucharest as soon as he got here. “It was love at first sight”, he says. “I simply liked the atmosphere.” Copenhagen, the Capital of Denmark, holds the first place among the preferences B Bucuresti what, where, when

of expats, shows the study mentioned above. In the top ten places are cities in Switzerland and Germany, such as Geneva, Basel and Bern, and respectively Dusseldorf, Bonn and Munich. The expats coming from Asia have their own top list: Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra, in Australia, as well as two regions, from Japan, Kobe and Yokohama. Hong Kong and Shanghai, in China, occupy places 15 and 78, respectively. In the Middle East, expats prefer Manama, the Capital of Bahrein, and Dubai and Muscat. Bagdad, the Iraqui Capital, holds the last place in the world, number 300, because of the precarious security level.

The City Offers

s much as work and stress as may represent your usual day, as much as you may feel that you are lost between meetings, important decisions, projects and work plans, you must admit that you sometimes think about possible moments of relaxation, with everything that might include. Whether a comfortable sofa suddenly comes to your mind, or you imagine yourself in front of a promising and dynamic TV or movie screen, or you think of the future coﬀee on a terrace with a dear companion, or new clothes to choose or to try on, the fast workﬂow is

interrupted by such flashes. I would gather this entire complex into a single word: entertainment. There may not be many people who ask themselves “What does entertainment mean today”. Once the word covered something far less complicated than today. It designated a way of spending spare time in a pleasant and relaxing way. But now, when everything is compacted into smaller and smaller time units, the appearance of things changes daily, and the idea of spare time is more and more vague and almost about to be extinct. So it’s no wonder that anything that suggests spending time in a different manner than working can be considered entertainment. Especially if you leave your home for one, two or several days. The simple departure from home, a change of place and space, means the need for some knowledge and a need to discover novelty in all its forms. What is called “business tourism” today does not exclude the desire for some time pleasantly spent. And once having arrived at a new destination, the search begins. The Living Town. The possibilities are, as many and as different, on all the levels and underground structures of a city, especially if we are talking about a Capital. A living, constantly moving and changing Capital, such as Bucharest, a town in action that offers many things, but also requires a lot of tenderness. So let’s take things one step at a time. A trip to an unknown place forces you to change the stereotype move with a slower walk, combined with gaping and watching new things. Music is everywhere. And you should listen to it. Whether it is the music in a bar, or the pocket of the kit bag filled with CD’s or an mp3 player hung around your neck, music is everywhere. For those who love concerts, while the clubs gather the most renowned DJ’s of the moment to satisfy all tastes,. For many people, nightlife means lifestyle. People say that the map of the beautiful areas of Bucharest begins in the ancient centre of town. There, we can find the greatest assembly of new and cosmopolitan places, for all tastes and pockets. There is also the Green Hours formula, a brand already, where theatre, books and jazz are served together with cocktails and exquisite drinks. Bucharest is still a Balkan fair, with the same old air that mixes the Orient with the Occident, with visible and invisible faces, but it is also a European city, where more and more people come to visit. Today we have reviewed what spending your spare time can mean, and also where and how you can do it. Starting with the next number, I shall stop longer on one of the pieces of this puzzle.

assage involves systematic stroking, rubbing and kneading of the soft tissues of the body in an eﬀort to induce a state of total relaxation. Despite some misconceptions, massage has become more accepted as a means to relieve minor physical problems. Although massage has sometimes been discredited, by advocates of modern medicine, it has recently been growing in acceptance. Massage has been shown to help maintain stability and enhance performance in nearly all of the body’s major systems. The muscular, skeletal, circulatory, nervous and respiratory systems can be positively aﬀected by massage. The theory behind massage is the relief of muscle tension, and that relaxation of the body will allow for a faster healing process. Massage can increase and improve circulation to damaged tissue areas. People who play

sports know that it is important to stretch and relax muscles for peak performance, and the same idea underlies the massage process. Perhaps the greatest benefit of massage, as any amateur can confirm, is the relaxing effect it can have on tense muscles. The smooth stroking motions and the kneading of muscles relieves tension, loosens joints and improves circulation, all of which are beneficial for good health. Of course it is recommended that people not replace necessary medical treatment with a massage. Sometimes medical conditions that could easily be cured by a simple medical treatment are identified as a simple tight muscle or something similar. Although massage does have positive medical benefits, in most cases it is not a replacement for modern medicine. The history of massage dates back almost as far as recorded history. For thousands of years some form of massage or the “laying on of hands” has been used to helpl the sick. For the ancient Greeks and Romans, massage was one of the principal methods of healing and relieving pain. Generally, if you are in good health and just feeling a little tense, a massage may be a good way to go..

Cyber cafes are becoming ever more popular in Bucharest and these are generally open quite late. There are plenty of nightclubs catering for all tastes and smart dress is not necessary, jeans are acceptable. Clubs and bars serve alcohol until 5 or 6 in the morning and the minimum age for drinking is 18.

Despite much recent renovation a real sense of history remains, many of the older inns or taverns have become pubs and clubs, but walking around this area can still transport you into the past, to the true beginnings of the city and its nickname, ‘Little Paris’. Now you will find here coffee shops, restaurants and bars where you can drink a hot tea or a good coffee. You can choose a bar where you will listen to traditional Romanian singers like Maria Tanase. The atmosphere is quite calm here in the night, perfect for relaxing with friends. As far as clubs are concerned, from electro to live rock, you will find anything you wish in Bucharest! They are the best and their secret is that they never let you stop dancing, all night you feel so good that you believe you are the greatest dancer in the world. When you visit Bucharest to find some fun, you will feel an explosion of happiness, everyone is friendly because everyone is dancing with a beer in their hand. The live music increases your adrenaline, the guitars, the amplifiers, the singer, all these go together to entice you to the dance floor. Techno, House, Garage and Latino are the popular sounds of Bucharest and, to a lesser extent, Hip Hop and Drum and Bass. THE PARLIAMENT PALACE

It is the second largest administrative building in the world (after the Pentagon) in terms of all-out surface: 330,000 m2. It was built between 1984 and 1989 by a team of architects led by Anca Petrescu. and was destined for the members of the Communist Party; Besides oﬃces, Ceausescu planned to make personal living places, so the Palace’s surface would have been bigger. MUST SEE IN BUCHAREST THE VILLAGE MUSEUM

Nestled on the shore of the Herastrau Lake, the museum displays 85 peasant homes, barns, churches and mills relocated there from all over Romania. Tall-roofed Transylvanian houses with beautifully crafted shingles sit alongside rustic wooden churches to form a unique neighborhood. The overall impression is that Romanian peasants take great pride in their work and homes. Everyday accessories: tools, butter-churns, hay forks, beer kegs and clothes are displayed inside the house. The museum is hosted by the former Royal Palace and is the most representative art gallery in Romania. The Royal Palace was the official residence of the Romanian kings. Its current facade was given the finishing touches in 1937 when Carol II was King of Romania. The National Art Museum Palace is located in downtown Bucharest (in the so-called Revolution Square). The Palace displays an extensive collection of European and Romanian fine art. The European Art Gallery offers an overview of teh most important artistic movements that marked art history from the early Rennaissance till the first decades of teh 20th century. The Romanian Modern Art Gallery illustrates the development of Romanian fine arts from the first decades of the 19th century till the second half of the 20th century. During the early Middle Ages, Bucharest became a commercial center; important enough to enable the XIV century princes to build the Princely Court – nowadays known as “The Old Court” - which formed the development core of the medieval town. The ﬁrst written mention of the name of “Bucharest” dates back to September 20, 1459: it appears on a document issued from the chancellery of the famous Prince Vlad Tepes (the Impaler). By the year 1599, a new Princely Court was built. Matei Basarab (1632-1654) renovated the Old Court. By 1640, because the prince’s relations with the Turks worsened, Matei Basarab moved his Capital back to the town of Targoviste. Bucharest still remained a princely residence. In May 1654, Prince Constantin Serban Basarab (1654-1658), Matei Basarab’s successor, left for Targoviste after a rebellion of his mercenary troops, and he ordered the Old Court to be set of ﬁre. The Old Royal Court is an outdoor site that can be visited any time. THE ROMANIAN ATHENAEUM

Is a concert hall in the center of Bucharest and a landmark of the Romanian capital city. Opened in 1888, the ornate, domed, circular building is the city’s main concert hall and home of the “George Enescu” Philarmonic and of the George Enescu annual international music festival. It has the aspect of a Greek temple with Ionic columns at the entrance. The wonderful interior with round frescoes depicts important events in Romania’s history. Extensive reconstruction and restoration work has been conducted in 1992 by a Romanian construction company and restoration painter Silviu Petrescu, saving the building from collapse. Visiting hours: every day, unless concerts or rehearsals are held.

PIATA OBOR 5D : A huge covered market located behind the Bucur Obor Department Store at the intersection of Calea Mosilor and Calea Stefan cel Mare. Although the selection of goods is big, the market is crowded and appears dirty. Watch your pockets and bags. If you’re looking for a truly Romanian market experience, this is your spot. Pets, including aquarium supplies, are available, as are fishing needs (including live worms, poles, lures). Wooden and woolen goods, ceramics, clothing, as well as plants cut and growing, are available. A large pedigree dog and cat market at least once a month on the street nearest Mosilor is a fun experience. PIATA 1 MAI 5D : Located near La Fourmi on Ion Mihalache Blvd. It is a small market but has a good selection of fruit, vegetables and flowers. As with all the above markets, clothing, shoes, and household items for cleaning and cooking may also be found. Honey and other bee byproducts are a national pride of Romania and are found at all of these outdoor markets. PIATA DOROBANTILOR 5D : Located indoors on Calea Dorobantilor north of Calea Stefan cel Mare. It offers produce and flowers. The quality is better than Amzei, but the prices are olso higher. Out of season exotic fruits and vegetables can be found here. There are several other stores in this area. The meat market inside is particularly good.

Shortly after the ﬁrst edition of BUCURESTI ﬁrst appeared, I had the idea to get a photographer to walk around Bucharest and take photos of some street scenes, and repeat the exercise every year, returning to the same scenes, a way of documenting the changes I knew were coming. But, somehow I never got around to it. We did not have a steady photographer in those days, and it seemed too much trouble. Now I really regret not having done so, and I do hope that someone out there had the foresight to in fact take those pictures. In some ways a city is like a child, if you live with it permanently, you don’t notice the day to day changes, and before you know it, you are looking at a grown up person. Of course a city is not a child, and mostly does not go through as dramatic a change, but, there are parts of Bucharest, which have in fact changed dramatically. One of those areas is the “Historic Center of the City”, near Unirii Square. Those of us who remember the

with the sounds of music, as pedestrians wander about choosing just the right atmosphere for an enjoyable night on the town. The area is a short cab ride from most major hotels, and I am sure you will have a good time. Since it is summer, complete with heat and humidity, consider leaving the City for the week-end, or for a day trip. Our Tour Division can organize a week-end trip to the seashore or to the mountains, or perhaps a day trip to Snagov, the suburb just north of the airport, where you can go for a swim, lounge around, or visit the island where Vlad the Impaler (Dracula) lived for a time.
