BOAT TALK
VMR, BRISBANE
WELCOME TO AUGUST/SEPTEMBER From our President It is pleasing to report that the new kitchen is now a reality. Christmas in July was the final curtain for the old kitchen. The kitchen has served us well. We should all embrace the new kitchen which will be unveiled at the next club function. We are planning a full-on night and do hope you come along and show your support. While on the subject of the kitchen and Christmas in July, what an incredible effort and result by Sierra crew. They just get better each year. The crew put an incredible amount of work and effort into the night to make it the success it was. Over 100 people attended. It was a huge team effort by the crew and their partners. One would have to say that this is team work at its best. Well done Sierra. I think those who attended should also be thanked because without your support, great results cannot be achieved. Let's all keep up the good work and enjoy what is there for the taking. During the month we had a set-back in our plan to cover the patio with an awning. All was going well until we got caught up in the red tape. Unfortunately we had to withdraw from our contract and reassess our position. The project will stay on our to-do list. Since the last edition of Boat Talk, we have had two major breaches of our security in that we have had boats entered and valuable equipment taken and a ram-raid on the side gate. It is sickening when this happens. I would ask that we are all security conscious and alert. At this time I would also remind all that have and leave boats and cars in the yard that it is your responsibility to make sure you are insured. It is not possible for us to carry insurance. The cost would be incredible. I would also suggest that you check on your individual policies with reference to your terms and conditions. That is all from me at this time. Please keep in mind that our AGM is looming. If you think you can make a contribution, talk to us. We are always looking for fresh people and ideas. Thanks to all who have worked so hard during the month. Safe boating to you all.

Crews’ News
As usual there was a lot of training activity covering such things as correct radio procedure, man overboard, fire on board the vessel and navigating without the use of electronic equipment. Rope work, vessel handling, fire aboard ship and abandon ship drills, together with an expanding square search exercise, using the ruler function on the chart plotter were also undertaken. Compass training was undertaken in the training area by some crews, comprising taking fixes on a landmark and plotting via triangulation to cross-check how accurate the compass bearings taken were. The squadron received an after-hours call at the end of May from (VKR) Brisbane Water Police that a fishing boat had overturned off Osborne Point and two people were in the water. While we were getting organized, we received a call from VKR to say that the two men had been plucked from the water by a passing vessel and were safe and well. The crew was placed on standby for a possible search for the upturned boat. We departed the base and set a course for the search area. We met up with Coast Guard Redcliffe (CG32) and started our search. We searched north along the coast to north reef. We did a couple of passes sighting nothing. We decided to search south Osborne Point. On the first run, GC32 who was tracking in shore from us made a positive sighting of the partially submerged vessel. It was decided that because the vessel was drifting on shore and the area was unsafe for us to try and retrieve it, we would leave it where it was. Our main aim was to make sure that it did not present a shipping hazard. The situation was reported to VKR who called the search off and stood us down. th In the early afternoon on 29 May, Papa Crew received a call for a 'retrieval'- a runabout broken down in the Brisbane River upstream of the Story Bridge and in need of a tow to Toowong. As is often the case, the people in the boat did not report correctly where they were. After we had gone past, they called on their phone to say they were actually on the downstream side about 200 metres from the bridge. We finally located
4
- August/September 2011
them just near the Churchie Rowing Shed at Mowbray Park – quite the longest 200 metres! And the tow to Toowong? Where they actually wanted to go turned out to be West End, just past the GoBetween Bridge. We had to leave them on a pontoon which had been disconnected by the floods which meant one of them would have had to wade or swim to shore to the boat ramp. November Crew's main task for 5th June was to provide a back up for the Canoe Club’s Wetland Wander. This is an annual event and the squadron is always available in case of an emergency and to provide assistance with radio communications. The event was exceptionally well organized and conducted. As with good planning all normally goes without incident. It was a great sight to see the public and paddlers utilize the facilities we have on offer. The rest of the day was without incident and our attention was on training. We turned our attention to navigation. We set out to plot positions using prominent land features to fix our position on the water. The day was uneventful as far a rescue work goes which is a good result. Around 11 am on their duty day, Sierra Crew received a telephone call from the Water Police with the request to assist a vessel that had run aground between the William Jolly and Go Between bridges. We set off from our Base and headed up the Brisbane River via the Koopa Channel. The River was quite busy with a number of large ships navigating the River as well as the City Cats and ferries. We finally made visual contact with the grounded vessel, a 15' half cabin, just upstream from the William Jolly Bridge. A strong ebbing tide made vessel recovery difficult. Callum took charge of the wheel and manoeuvred us close to the stricken vessel so that we could secure a tow line. With the tow line secured, the vessel was caressed off the rocky beach and we soon had the vessel afloat and under control. After a short tow, we delivered the vessel and her Master to the West End boat ramp.

Training News UTC, PETER LEECH The next First Aid course is planned for Saturday 27 August commencing at 0830 hours. The CPR training/revision will be conducted first and the First Aid after that. The CPR should take about 2 hours and the First Aid about 3 hours. A list of persons requiring the relevant training will be posted in the Radio Room. Please note that VMR Coxn's and designated Radio Operators are required to hold current Senior FirstAid certificates. Anyone wishing to undertake First Aid training for the first time should place their name on the list. Due to number restrictions you will be advised if you are able to attend. The list of courses for the period 1 July to 31 December are posted in the Radio Room and those wishing to attend should place their name on the list. The courses planned for this period are primarily for those who are competent crew (2 stripes) but anyone may nominate. One subject will be held each month. The navigation will be held for 4 consecutive nights during November. Another Elements of Shipboard Safety course will be held for existing and new members to ensure that all members meet the legislation requirements. The Swim Test and Life Raft drills will be held in December. ALL members are strongly urged to read the Training Folder in the Radio Room so that they can be aware of what is required for each subject. There are a number of members who hold a Radio Operator’s certificate but have not been issued with a VMRAQ certificate. To obtain this certificate, a member must complete the transmission and receiving of a radio message and be assessed by the crew Duty Master. The DM must then advise the UTC by email and the relevant paperwork will be completed. Various audits of VMRAQ Squadrons have revealed a number of problems and the auditors have requested that they be brought to the attention of all members. All assessments and assignments MUST only be signed off by an MSQ approved assessor and in our squadron that is the UTC. The auditor was also very keen to remind VMRAQ that under no circumstances may a TDM01 qualification be RPL'd across to a TDM07 qualification without a RECORDED challenge test/practical evaluation. Evidence of such a challenge has to be kept on the
member's file with his prior TDM01 paperwork. This also applies to any VMRAQ Coxn wishing to upgrade to and MSQ Coxn. It is strongly recommended that ALL members liaise with their Duty Master regarding their training and all crews are urged to discuss their training requirements when on duty. Safe Boating Peter J leech UTC VMR Brisbane
The answer to last month's question: What is a neap tide? At neap tides, the moon and the sun will be working against one another (in quadrature), such that around the time of the first quarter and third quarter of the moon's phases, the highs will be relatively low and the lows relatively high. Tidal flows during the neaps will be relatively weaker. This edition’s question: What is meant by the term 'Abaft the beam'?
Radiotelephony Silence Periods
Sierra Crew: well done, and thank you to all the crews who work so tirelessly for the monthly barbecues.
Recently Papa Crew reminded us that Silence is golden ........especially for the 3 minutes after the hour and half hour. The lack of awareness of, understanding why we have it, and the observance of the '3 minute silent periods' immediately following the hour and half hour is astounding. Many boats which will not start, don't start on account of low battery power. This lower power, along with distance and condition of the radio transmitter often make for a weak signal. Where two signals clash on a frequency, the stronger will prevail. Hence we've all had that "someone came in over the top of you" experience. For a boat with a genuine emergency - this could become fatal. The silent periods exist to ensure that on days of busy traffic, even weak BUT truly urgent signals will be heard. Unfortunately even VMR members are regular offenders against this important priority. On Papa's duty, some other units were even transmitting their general weather updates and in one case, the closing down message, during the silent periods, not to mention general communications between units and their own vessels or vessels logging on. Silence is Golden - especially if it saves a vessel and its crew. The Papa has spoken. To confirm Papa Crew’s views, the Marine Radio Operator’s Handbook from the Australian Maritime College states under Section 3: Monitoring of Radiotelephony Frequencies (Watchkeeping) that, although International regulations no longer require silence periods to be observed on the distress and calling frequencies, ”in Australia, two three-minute periods of radiotelephony silence should be observed in each hour.” “20.4 With the exception of distress calls and messages, all aural transmission from all stations should cease during these periods.”
Barbara Schluter.
By the way, this “silence” is pronounced “sillonnce”.
Letter to the Editor Brian and I were so pleased we came out of the woodwork on Friday night to be part of the Christmas in July. What a wonderful evening! The beautiful tree, the Christmas decorations and the eggnog to start the evening off, made a very happy atmosphere. Congratulations to Sierra Crew: the soup, main course and the Christmas pudding were a delight. The mini mince pies were delicious and also the cupcakes beautifully decorated in red and green donated by Karra were lovely.

Report from Junior Vice-President Ceremony for Retiring RAN Captain Early in July we had the privilege of our Squadron being invited to participate in the retirement ceremony for the Captain Peter Leary, RAN and Commanding Officer HMAS Sydney. David Davis, Bob Chapman and I attended on behalf of the Squadron where we assisted the Water Police aboard the Brett T Handran. This was a great opportunity to be apart of the pomp and ceremony and also spend some valuable time working alongside members of the Water Police. Marketing Activity We have embarked on a marketing program aimed at improving the dissemination of information about our Club activities to our members in a timely manner. This is in addition to our Boat Talk magazine and includes: § our web site (www.vmrsandgate.net.au) that Glenn Philip works so diligently to enhance and keep up to date § notices sent via email on a semi regular basis § text messages to mobile phones regarding specific events § electronic surveys so that we can get your views on what works and what you would like to see improved We utilised our web site, email and texting to promote the Sierra BBQ and we were very pleased with the outcome (see note on Sierra Crew BBQ). I'm anticipating a wonderful night with our “Christmas in July” theme. To help us better manage our catering requirements we asked if people could help us out by providing us with advance notice that they would be attending. As an enticement “early birds” were eligible to enter a special raffle prize. To our absolute delight our early bird list totalled some 70 people. We have two sponsors to thank for their support of the Sierra BBQ: § The Full Moon Hotel provided us with the special raffle prize; and § Karra from “The Cake Pantry” at Bracken Ridge kindly provided us with 100 cup cakes for dessert. Kitchen Refurbishment & August Crew BBQ (26 August) Work will commence on the refurbishment of the kitchen immediately after the Sierra Crew BBQ on 22 July with work expected to be completed by mid August so that our new facilities can be unveiled at the August BBQ on 26 August. We expect that our new kitchen will be quite spectacular. Vicky Darling, the State Member for Sandgate, has accepted our invitation to formally open our new kitchen. To help us better manage this event please provide us with advance notice if you will be attending. As with the Sierra BBQ, a special prize raffle will be run for our “early birds”. The cut off date for early bird RSVPs is 12 August - please contact Glenn Philip (0433 154 105 or webmaster@vmrsandgate.net.au) Look out for our promotional material for the August BBQ. We look th forward to seeing you there on the 26 . Membership & Hardstand Fees for 2011 / 12 We have had a great response to our membership renewals and payment of the Hardstand fees. I cannot emphasis enough that whenever you make a payment to the Club (for what ever reason) you should include your Member Number and Surname in the payment reference to enable us to identify your payment. Unfortunately, if we have not received your payment by 31 July 2011 then early in August we will deactivate your swipe card that provides you access via the boom gate. Grant & Sponsorship Applications In February we submitted two grant applications – one for additional electronics for Energex Sandgate I (thermal imaging & AIS vessel locating & tracking) and the other a much needed building refurbishment. Unfortunately both applications have been declined. This outcome is simply a product of the number of grant applications submitted by the various Volunteer organisations and available funds. The best we can do is to continue to submit valid applications and through persistence we will receive our fair share of funding. Within the next month we will submit another three grant applications. Earlier in the year we approached a couple of large corporations within close proximity to our base to see if they can provide any assistance to us. At this stage one request has been deferred to the 2012 / 13 and the other is still under consideration by the organisation.
Membership Changes There have been some changes to Membership following the June Management Meeting. The two motions passed to make our structure more equitable are as follows:. 1. Associate members wishing to become Full Members may do so by paying the Nomination Fee (one off) and Full Member Fee (annual). 2. The New Membership Fee be changed such that new members are Glenn, christening charged the fee the on adishwasher pro rata basis: that being one twelfth of the

applicable annual membership fee for each whole remaining month of the financial year. For example, a new member whose application is accepted in August would pay ten twelfths of the annual membership fee. To avoid any doubt, this new arrangement for new member membership fees applies to all membership categories and the nomination fee is still payable by Full and Concessional Full new members.

QCYC Vintage Yacht Regatta After several months off the water, my husband Graham Elliott and I were eager to take our Classic Flying Fifteen Seamist out for a sail. We were excited to find out that over the weekend of June 11th/12th, a regatta would be held on Moreton Bay right next to Sandgate Yacht Club. The QCYC’s 36th Vintage Yacht Regatta was calling for boats built or designed more than 30 years ago, and since Seamist will be 40 years old next year, we entered the Regatta. Four races were held over the weekend; two on Saturday and two on Sunday, with an optional pursuit race on Monday in which we did not participate. On Saturday, we launched from the very end of Sandgate Yacht Club boat ramp into a fairly low tide, and navigated the channel with just a slight bump out to Moreton Bay. There was a south-westerly wind all day, between about 5 and 10 knots, blowing right down Cabbage Tree Creek and across the Bay. The winter season was apparent in the low clouds and cool temperatures, but the rain stayed away until evening. We got to the starting line just after the start of the first race at 11 am, and quickly joined the fleet of about 30 boats headed up to the first mark. There was a marvellous assortment of classic yachts in three divisions: classics of over 10 metres in Division 1, classics of under 10 metres in our Division 2, and modern classics (based on old designs) in Divison 3. Particularly noteworthy among the mostly timber yachts were the Bluey Williams sister ships Skirmish and Tequila, the gaff-rigged 30 footer Marie built in 1922 and ATE Spirit of Koomooloo, a frequent Sydney-Hobart competitor and our constant companion around the course over the weekend. The first race was a triangle three times around, and Firebrand (a 1974 quarter-tonner) was first back in our divison, with Seamist crossing the finish line in 5th place. In the second race, there was a very competitive start, which saw several boats in very close quarters. That was when we realised how much smaller we were than most of the other yachts on the line! Fortunately we were able to use our quicker acceleration to avoid becoming a 15-foot sandwich. The wind was light all through Race Two, and the windward-leeward course was shortened from three times around to two - with Seamist crossing the finish line first of all the boats. On our way back up the Creek, into the teeth of the breeze, we were very grateful for a tow from the beautifully restored Balamara, a 1969 S&S yawl captained by John Richardson with his family. We tied up at the QCYC for the night and enjoyed a large and tasty dinner at the Club along with a few pitchers of rum and coke at the bar. Sunday was a similarly grey day, but fortunately clear of rain after about 10 am, with a fine south-westerly breeze blowing 10-15 knots all day.

- August/September 2011
This time we were on the line for the 11 am start, and rounded the triangle course three times to cross first in our division for Race 3. The wind was gusty during this third race and, though we managed to fly the spinnaker throughout all the downwind legs, we also showed off a bit more of our keel than we like to during one memorable gybe. Race 4 was windward-leeward and again shortened to twice up and back. We crossed the finish line ahead of all the other boats, then headed back to Sandgate Yacht Club to stow Seamist and attend the prize-giving at QCYC. There was another warm welcome from the bar and Slipways restaurant. At the prize-giving, we were thrilled to win line honours for Divison 2, with three 1st place finishes, as well as the Uffa Fox trophy for fastest boat of his design (unopposed). The entire regatta was fun and enjoyable, and our thanks go to the Race Committee and our colleagues at SYC for encouraging us to enter. We look forward to racing again next year. Sandgate Canoe Club held their Annual General Meeting on 4th June. Their guest speaker, Cr. Victoria Newton, said this has been a tough year but it has been pleasing to see the huge amount of work put in by the club to clean the waterfront of debris after the floods over a long period of time. Water quality testing has been continuing. As we are no longer flood impacted, the fact that enterococci peaks after rain suggests that storm water is the cause of contamination rather than the events of January. Bacteria levels are currently good but take care not to ingest water. Mike Parsons was re-elected President and his Vice-President is Barry Renaud. Sue Gollagher remains as Secretary and Bruce Pilcher as Treasurer. Peter Rummery has taken over the Membership Registrar and he will be ably assisted by Sue. Graham Moorhead is now the Basic Skills Coordinator and Mark Otter is going to continue producing an excellent monthly newsletter. Parking for the Disabled A small group of members is developing ideas for the club to have a paddling program for disabled people. The intention is for this group to produce a rough plan to present to the next Management Committee meeting. While few ideas are in place as yet, what is certain is that there will be a need for volunteers. Anyone interested should contact either Keith Willis 0400.550101 or Janelle Ellwood 0407.751435. Wetlands Wander (5th June) - Sue G reported that 105 paddlers ranging in age from 10 to 74 and representing 19 clubs competed in either 18, 12 or 6 km long races. The day's activities were organized by 33 wonderful volunteers. The fastest time in the 18 km (3x6 km loops) paddle was 1:18:33. Later in May, there was the big sail from the Gold Coast back to Shorncliffe with a couple of overnight camps for about 8 hardy people.
On 18th June, eleven sea kayakers arrived at the top of Scarborough for a 10 km paddle along the Redcliffe Peninsular to Scott's Beach and then 10 km back again. There are many other paddles of various distances scheduled for August and beyond. Just contact the SYC through their email addresses below or phone Graham Moorhead on 0429.623261 for details. General Paddle information All Paddles shown in the newsletter or amendments otherwise issued are sanctioned. % There is always a paddle at Yundah St on Saturdays starting at 8am and Tuesdays at 9am. ( Nominate leader of day) % There may be a paddle at Yundah St on Sundays starting at 9am. (See John Blackley) % In June, July, and August there may be an alternative paddle at Yundah St on Saturdays starting at 9am (See John Blackley) % All Distances are return. % All paddles are for everyone subject to self assessment in accordance with the club paddle grading system. % We want to make paddling as interesting and enjoyable as possible, if you have any ideas for a paddle contact one of the paddle committee members. % Race Training paddles –most mornings –paddle from Yundah St.

Kevin Francis Murray
Kevin joined Sandgate Yacht Club as a Junior Member in the late 1950s, learning the basics skills of sailing from the Jeays family and in Linton Hope raters, before purchasing the Heavyweight Sharpie Renegade. After some time he had a Lightweight Sharpie built by Merv Anderson which he called Renegade II. Kevin sailed with the SYC with moderate success, finishing third in a Queensland LWS Championships conducted by the Port Cutis Sailing Club at an Easter in the early 1960s. Kevin also was voted in as the Assistant Secretary of the Club writing publicity articles for the local newspapers. His mother, the late Thelma Murray, was assistant Starter for many years during hail, rain or sunshine and even helped start a Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race. After Kevin sold Renegade II he took up ocean racing and sailed in a number of Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Races with Ivan Holm on the famous Laurabada and with another former LSW skipper, Jim Sue, who built a yacht called Obsession. (Jim sailed a catamaran called Sue Cat with SYC and when he purchased his LWS he named it Taceus which is Sue Cat spelt backwards. This name intrigued a lot of

people!) In the last couple of years, Kevin joined Shorncliffe Sailability as a volunteer taking people with disabilities for a sail. At the Australian Flying Fifteen Championships held in January 2010, Kevin was the Chief Marshall with the megaphone organising the launching and retrieval of boats. On the second last day, the group of volunteers from Shorncliffe Sailability retrieved 42 boats in 30 minutes which was mainly due to Kevin’s organising ability. In his career at the Department of Transport, Kevin rose through the ranks to become Secretary for the Minister for Transport, the late Don Lane. Fortunately he took early retirement, enjoying a game of bowls and as a volunteer driver for St. John’s Ambulance. In April last year, Kev was diagnosed with lung cancer and sadly passed away on 25th June, 2011 aged 66 years. Kevin’s daughter-in-law read the poem “Crossing the Bar” by Alfred Tennyson at the service and the exit song was “Sailing” by Rod Stewart.

Me and My Boat TOM IVINS Well before the current management structure came into being, Tom was our Unit Training Coordinator and that job covered everything to do with crew members. Fortunately other members came to the rescue so he could concentrate on the role of UTC and maintaining all the training records which is quite a job in itself. He held this position for 6 years. My first experience in boating was probably in 1944 when I was introduced to net fishing at the Cod Hole in the Maroochy River. I was a bit of a kid whose part in this fishing expedition was to “stay out of the way”! However the whole netting game meant that one row boat had the long net with its floats and sinkers and a roller on the stern for a second row boat to pull the net into the water as both boats rowed away from each other; and then headed for shore where my father and a number of my uncles were waiting to drag in the net in with a huge haul of fish to supply the family parlors for some time ahead. Alas I heard the words: “What a poor result, all under size”. No fish went home that day but I wondered if this exercise was legal and was it worth getting covered in mud on the banks of the river. Well that wasn't my boat, but I could claim that I spent more time in this next boat than anyone else.Several of my extended family owned blocks of flats in Maroochydore and we would holiday there often. My Grandfather taught me to row his boat when I was about 8 years old. This included how to manage the oars, keep the rowlocks in place, make sure I didn't pinch my thumbs; and perhaps more important for him, how not to splash him every time I pulled on the oars! Keeping the boat on course was also important as I was continually reminded to check where I was going and also line up with a tree or other object off the stern to keep rowing straight. My Grand-father was not often there, but I was; and I had a great time in that boat which was a similar one to that in the photo.
In my late teens, my parents built a block of 5 flats in Maroochydore – right opposite Pincushion Island and with a jetty extending out into the river. There had to be a boat attached to the jetty as by now I was well into fishing and had previously learned some things about fishing to catch some good ones and realize that the game meant a lot about feeding the fish so that they grew bigger for someone else to catch. Now, this boat was an old-timer and had an in-board Chapman Pup motor that required a considerable pulls on the belt that was wrapped around the flywheel to get the thing to start.
This boat was without any clutch – it was a 'stop or go' setup and there were many of these about the River with their characteristic “putt-putt”, day or night. On one occasion my Dad and I went all the way to Bli Bli in this boat and after catching the usual amount of no-fish; ran out of petrol on the way home. So we took turns in rowing until we came across a couple of fisherman in a boat who were quite sympathetic towards us in our dilemma. They said they had left their other boat about half a mile ahead and around the next bend and that there was some spare fuel in it – we were welcome to it. Having thanked them, we rowed on and sure enough there was the boat, petrol and no means of writing a note to provide some assurance that we would repay the owner. To this day, I still feel bad about it and maybe that's why I can't sleep some nights! However, I had to pay for it in another way. Having no clutch and it being a 'go or no-go, no-reverse' boat I had to judge the speed when approaching the jetty; then kill the engine at the right moment. If I missed, I would have to try and re-start the thing again and have another go. Therefore it became practice to switch off the motor, jump up the front and while holding onto the boat, try and cushion the bump against the jetty. I did think I was getting quite skilled in this method when one day a finger on my left hand served as the cushion instead, and I nearly lost it!
My brother and me coming into the jetty in the 1960s.
During the 6 years that I spent teaching in PNG during the 1970s, I bought a very under-rated racing catamaran. This was a Mosquito Class Cat designed by Neil Fowler in 1966. The overall length was 4.9 m, beam 2.18 m and mast 7.3 m. and I added a Jib to convert it to a Mark II model. Made from 'stitch-n-glue' ply, this boat could fly - its lightweight and efficient hull design, coupled with a fully adjustable sail shape, provided sparkling performance over a broad range of wind conditions. The dagger boards were a real problem' as at the right moment coming on the beach, they would stick in the hull-slots causing some interesting moments right in front of the Royal Papuan Yacht Club, of which I was a member.

BOAT TALK
VMR, BRISBANE
An unusual rescue This story started Sunday morning (10th July) when I met a fellow who told me this sad story about his yacht sinking. The fellow was very upset about the loss of his lovely yacht that just happened to be on its maiden voyage. I told him that I was involved in search and rescue and if I could ever be of assistance in helping to locate and recover the yacht to let me know. The following Friday morning, I was about to launch my boat when I looked around and there was old mate with a big smile on his face and a made up drag line. Next thing Bob Chapman turned up and the conversation got very interesting. We talked about how we were going to deploy the drag line and how to do a comprehensive sweep of the area the boat was possibly in. The line was deployed a number of times with no result. Old mate was looking rather dejected. All he could talk about was his
lovely boat and the problem he was having accepting the fact that he may never see it again The line was deployed again. Next thing old mate was jumping up and down and yelling that he had weight on the line and he hoped it was not a log or snag. All eyes were on the line as he slowly pulled it in. All of a sudden the bow of the yacht was visible and all were there to make sure it did not slip back into the murky depths. Before long, the boat was on dry land and the damage assessment of 8 weeks under water started. Nothing phased our new friend now, all that mattered was he was reunited with his boat. Bob and I were both quite proud of the role we played in the search and recovery. The photos on page 17 tell the whole story. David Davis
Me and My Boat: Tom Ivins (cont’d from page 10)
I thought I had it made in 1978 when I bought a fibre glass 5 metre open dingy to which I attached a 25 H.P. Evenrude outboard motor, built a windscreen and fitted forward controls. I wish I had a photo of it; but I would tow this boat, (now a run-about) from Albany Creek to Maroochydore and enjoy a spot of night crabbing or fishing. Then I found the easy way to catch fish at night. You have a passenger shine a torch to show where you are heading and large mullets will jump into your boat! This has happened on a number of occasions but not being partial to the taste of mullet, we would then have more bait than we could fish with, and there was always the crab pot. Finally came the time to retire from working full time – only to discover how erroneous this all is. One no longer has time to go to work as one becomes so busy with every other thing in demand. So ignoring that information or making it worse; I bought my dream boat, a 5 metre Haines Signature with a 90 HP Mercury outboard.
Well a few years later I found it to be true that “when you want to go boating, the weather is bad and it always seemed good or perfect when you can't go”. So the sad day came when I saw her towed away, down the road. Agood boat for someone else! In recent years I have found great delight in building model boats such as this 1m long 'Ariel' class sail boat that is radio controlled on a frequency of 2.4GHz. I have built several (and have quite a collection of other boats in various stages), but this one gives much pleasure when the wind is up at either Boondall, Warner or North Lakes. The hull of this boat is strip-planked in 3-ply and sealed with epoxyresin. The deck is also strip-planked but in solid silver ash and corked in a process difficult to explain here. The cabin is solid cedar with front and side windows. To complete the appearance, the hand made hatch and doors are of solid cedar with louvres made of pine. The wheel is hand made and again too complex to explain here.
Except for the fact that the motor was both noisy and thirsty, my family and I enjoyed some great times fishing and cruising in Moreton Bay and the attached rivers. At the time of purchasing this boat, I received advice from long time friend (Ian Withers) that I should join VMR Brisbane. So on 26/06/2001, Doug Young signed me as a member – and that was about 10 years ago with over 6 of them as unit training coordinator. Since joining, I rapidly learned that I didn't know as much about boating as I thought my years on the water had taught me. I was allocated toAlpha Crew and have been there ever since.

It was great to see the turnout of VMR Lionfish Dive Group members at Foxtrot's Barbecue on 24th June. Stella Walker helped the team of men cater for the evening and they did a sterling job. We started with kabana, cheese and crackers. Michael Overend would have done a restaurant proud with his trays and trays of lasagna-style spaghetti. This was accompanied by chicken pieces, and a variety of salads with garlic bread. Fruit-covered pavlovas and warm apple pie finished the evening beautifully. Neil Sheppard Keith Nickerson would have won the Goose Club members' draw of $150 but he wasn't there to collect. The Door Prize was won by Robyn Duffield while raffle prize winners had a nice time making their selections. Troy Sauer donated a mixer tap and installation and this was chosen by Neil Sheppard who won 3rd prize. Brian Nelson obviously needed sweetening up because his first prize ticket meant he chose the chocolates. Kevin Oliver chose the red wine for 2nd prize while Alan Eustace's 4th prize saw him win a bottle of another alcoholic beverage – both of these prizes were donated by Bob Walker. David Davis told members about the wonderful grant secured by Neil and how we are going to use it to upgrade the kitchen and bar area. Neil promoted his crew's Christmas in July barbecue on 22nd July – they will have the dubious honour of being the last to use the old kitchen! Members were also encouraged to check out our website which Glenn has been furiously updating. To finish off a lovely evening, the Lionfish Dive Group presented VMRB with a cheque for $500. David gratefully accepted it on our behalf.

From the moment you rolled up to VMRB on Friday 22nd June, it was obvious this was going to be a special night. In an effort to help with catering, people were asked to let organizers know they were going to attend and 84 replied. In fact we had just over 100 present; perhaps an all-time record. The top storey was festooned in coloured lights with the magic Christmas tree flickering its brightly changing lights. Christmas cloths decorated the tables with special table number signs and bowls of coloured popcorn and sweets. We snacked on dips and crackers, supplemented by the Hillyard's delicious eggnog (non-alcoholic version available for the children, teetotallers and designated drivers). We were served our meals as tables were called and started with the entrée, 'Soup Me Santa Clause', which was billed as Rudolph's broth (chicken and vegetable soup). Main course was the 'Jinglebell Belly Buster' – a choice of roast pork and ham, baked potatoes, baby carrots, peas, corn, beans and gravy. The dessert – Oh Deer, Delicious Dessert – was a couple of impressive flaming brandy Karra of The Cake Pantry and Christmas puddings, custard and ice-cream. And that wasn't all: Helga, alias the some of her lovely cupcakes Dessert Queen, also produced fabulous mince pies and German chocolate biscuits. Helga and Callum kindly donated all their desserts. And, it goes on, that wasn't all: Karra ten Bohmer provided 100 gorgeous cupcakes so we can genuinely recommend her business, The Cake Pantry (cake decorating lessons and supplies). The Goose Club membership draw jackpots to $250 next month as Tim Holt was not there to collect his prize. Joe McCoy recalled that he and Richard Windham had a bet over the cricket. Since there were no flies crawling up the wall at the time, they wagered on the next event: The State of Origin. It seems Richard was destined to lose as he was supporting the Poms. As a consequence of the sporting results, there were three Scratchies for Richard, Jan and Joe to scratch. We were getting ready to celebrate but .. nothing! Neil won the Door Prize The door prize was donated by Thomas Grice and won by Sierra's Neil Sheppard. The next draw was for our usual raffle and the first prize drink cooler was won by Thomas' father! 2nd prize was a bottle of Riccadonna and that was won by Graham Makin whileAndrew Pearson took home 3rd prize. Neil spoke about the kitchen refurbishment, largely due to the grant from the Gambling Community Benefit Fund and demolition was to begin the next day. The Special draw for those who booked their attendance at the dinner saw wonderful support from local businesses. Glad Best won 1st prize which was a $100 voucher from The Full Moon while Pat Turner took home 2nd prize which was a $50 voucher Glad with her Full Moon voucher from Raphael’s Restaurant – both businesses are in Sandgate. Both were extremely happy with their wins. Actually we were all winners at the dinner: it was a great night which we all enjoyed and the Club benefited by a little fundraising and social interaction. It's going to be a tough act to follow!

An unusual rescue
Eureka! I've got my yacht back...
(cont’d from page 11)
Oh no...look at the mud pouring out.
I don’t think the electrics can be recovered....
Wouldn’t it break your heart?! It’s hard to imagine that this was a pristine yacht on its maiden voyage when it suffered the catastrophic accident eight weeks before. The vessel was being christened in the lake at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre in Boondall when it came to grief in an estimated 4 metres of obviously muddy water. It makes you wonder what else is hidden there as it is a very popular venue for sailing models.
Now I’m retired...
Doug Young Doug Young is a familiar face to very many people at VMRB. He joined way back when it was Air Sea Rescue because he was helping Robin with his boats, cars, etc. Doug has been on Charlie Crew all along but turning 85 in February was the point at which he decided he had earned a rest. He certainly had, because he was our diligent Treasurer for around 15 years and was the doorman at our barbecues until very recently. Doug’s mighty efforts were recognized quite some time ago when he was awarded Life Membership of VMRB. In fact Doug, along with his enthusiastic wife, Jan, still help out wherever they are needed. Thanks for everything, Doug and Jan.
Working people frequently ask retired people what they do to make their days interesting. Well, for example, the other day I went into town and into a shop in George Street. I was only there for about five minutes. When I came out there was a cop writing out a parking ticket. I went up to him and said, “Come on mate, how about giving a senior a break?” He ignored me and continued writing the ticket. I called him a Nazi. He glared at me and started writing another ticket for having worn tyres. So I called him... well, you don’t need to know exactly what I said but he finished the second ticket and put it on the windscreen with the first. Then he started writing a third ticket. This went on for about 20 minutes. The more I abused him, the more tickets he wrote. Personally, I didn’t give a damn: I came into town by train.

Queensland Flying Fifteen Championships On the weekend of 26th and 27th March 2011, Tin Can Bay Yacht Club conducted the State Titles for the Flying Fifteen Sailing Class. Eight boats from Sandgate and one boat from Toowoomba travelled to Tin Can Bay to join with the six local boats for a total fifteen entrants for the championships. Some long time usual entrants for these Championships John Henry (Bill Matthews), Corang (Lindsay Gilbert) and Ghost Magic (Ron Walker) did not sail due to business pressures as a result of the January Floods, recovering from an operation to the left hand and sickness. Lindsay Gilbert and Ron Walker travelled to Tin Can Bay and watched the racing from Bruce Whan's 40 ft Beneteau cruising yacht. Bruce owns the Flying Fifteen Flying Fossils. Three races were sailed on Saturday, 26th March 2011, in light winds gradually increasing during the day. In the first heat of the championships Soggy Sox (Laurie Williamson and Chris Howell) were over the line at the start and had to return and restart, costing them valuable time. FAB (Ashley Smith and Kym Thumpkin) sailed a perfect race to record a runaway win from Bubbles (Ken and Lee Bubb) with Flying Fossils (Russel Shannon and Denis Lehaney) third, Fifty Fifty (Ron and Ken Godwin) fourth Topaz (Michael Robinson and John Moit) fifth and Turning Vehicle (Larry Bardsley and Paul Webster) sixth. Soggy Sox was a disappointing ninth. In the second heat of the Championships Soggy Sox got a perfect start and went on to win this race. The other placings were as follows: 2nd Flying Fossils, 3rd FAB, 4th Bubbles, 5th Think Big (Eelke Wouda and Bruce Wales), 6th Turning Vehicle. In the third heat, Bubbles recorded a narrow win from Flying Fossils with FAB third, Fifty Fifty fourth, Turning Vehicle fifth and Free to Air (Neil Gall and Graeme Dobson) sixth. Crew Neil Gall skippered the boat for the weekend as Graeme had a medical appointment in Brisbane late on the Sunday. Soggy Sox's main halyard broke prior to the third heat and they had to sail to a sandbank and rolled the boat on its side to retie the halyard. Once again this cost them valuable time and they were late for the start and finished a disappointing tenth. After three heats of the Championship, the point score was all tied up on 7 points overnight for the following three boats FAB, Bubbles and Flying Fossils. All competitors and visitors enjoyed an evening meal at the Tin Can
Bay Yacht Club on the Saturday night. On the Sunday, the breeze was on the increase with intermittent showers. In the fourth heat Turning Vehicle recorded a narrow win from FAB with Soggy Sox third, Flying Fossils fourth, Bubbles fifth and Secret Fifteen (Greg Williamson and Ian Mitchell-Hill) sixth. In the fifth heat, gusts of up to 42 knots were recorded at Double Island Point and race officials wisely shortened the course. Soggy Sox had a narrow win over FAB with Bubbles third, Fifty Fifty fourth, Turning Vehicle fifth and Think Big sixth. The final placings and points overall in Championships are as follows: 1st FAB 8 points 2nd Bubbles 10 points 3rd Flying Fossils 11 points 4th Soggy Sox 14 Points 5th Turning Vehicle 17 points 6th Fifty Fifty 19 points 7th Think Big 26 points 8th Stiff Uffa Lip (Grahame Baker and Vic Lagette) 33 points 9th Free toAir 37 points 10th Formula One (Brady Lowe and John Bucknall) 37 points 11th Topaz 38 points 12th Secret Fifteen 38 points 13th Frivolous (Gary Maygar) 38 points 14th Sea Mist Graham Elliott andAmelia Brown 50 points 15th Final Fling (Roy and Penny Yeeles) 58 points The Silver Division was won by Flying Fossils and the Classic division by Formula One. The Handicap Trophy was also won by FAB. Congratulations to all of the winners and thank you to all competitors for making this a successful Regatta. The Navigator's Trophy was awarded to Flying Fossils for filling up with water on the starting line of heat five. If Soggy Sox had better placings in heats 1 and 3 and no mishaps, she could have won the Championship. Next time Laurie, make sure you do some maintenance on your boat and you could be in the Winners circle. We also must thank the members of Tin Can Bay for their hospitality shown to all the visitors, by hosting some members for breakfast and the curry night on Sunday evening at Ken and Lee Bubb's residence. Also a big thank you to the starting Crew which included John Grimmett, a former Flying Fifteen Sailor.
Crews News (cont’d from page 4)
The positive relationship with Redcliffe Coastguard continued when Redcliffe Leagues 2 proposed a takeover of a Curtain Reef-to-Nudgee ramp tow. Sadly Sandgate didn't get the initial call but immediately responded to Coastguard's approach, taking over the tow to release the Coastguard vessel which was required for an assist elsewhere. The tow was completed by Sandgate by 1600 with return by 16.30 - just in time for a 5m centre console call with an overheating motor SouthEast of Woody Point. With nav and towing light blazing, Energex Sandgate 1 motored back into the laterals at 17.10. Papa is not enjoying a late finish every duty day - but that's how it goes! While on a training run, Tango Crew removed some debris that would have caused considerable damage to anyone hitting it. A 6.1m alloy boat with a blown gearbox was towed from Tangalooma to Wellington Point on 24th July and shortly after a 5 m boat with a broken steering cable was retrieved in the Brisbane River by Quebec Crew.
Tango Crew started their day with Energex Sandgate 1 being called upon to pluck a competitor in the QCYC Vintage Regatta from the sandbank in front of the pontoon. It was a more unusual day for Delta crew as they spent the day undertaking a publicity photo shoot and training activities, as there were no calls for assistance during the watch. The photo shoot involved Energex Sandgate 1 and it was conducted in the vicinity of the Fisheries beacon, with Sandgate 2 as the photographer's platform. Ajetski off Brighton was rescued later in the day on Quebec's duty day. There was a crowded base for Papa Crew with many of our volunteers participating in the UTC's training in flare use and fire management. This filled the morning along with a visit by Redcliffe Coastguard and intermittingly transmitting a Securitee requested by the Port Office regarding a reported obstacle near the outer 'Red' of the Kedron Brook Floodway.
