INSPIRE YOURSELF – DISCOVER VMU Vytautas Magnus University (VMU) is seen as Artes Liberales university and is one of the most liberal and modern universities in Lithuania. Its liberal studies policy seeks to establish successful international relations with other universities all over the world. It is the university where traditions and innovations successfully meet and
complement each other. The university is proud of creative and enthusiastic community – students and academics feel free to communicate as equals allowing which not only facilitates better cooperation and sharing of knowledge but allows for generation of new and creative ideas.
3
ARTES LIBERALES UNIVERSITY VMU differs from other Lithuanian institutions which provide higher education by its modern conception of studies, based on the of Harvard University model. The university is unique in Lithuanian when it comes to the system of studies, openness to the world, dissemination of liberal thought and high quality of studies. At VMU the priority is given not to narrow and highly specialised studies but to broad university education, which satisfies the needs of student’s personal development and contemporary society. Studies at VMU are organised differently from other universities in Lithuania. During the first 2 years of the BA studies, students chose from a range of basic courses in humanities and social sciences, biomedicine and physical sciences, as well as arts. After completing the initial twoyear study period, students then choose a specific field of study to major in and spend the next two to three years specialising and acquiring new skills in their chosen field of studies.
LIBERAL STUDIES AND ACADEMIC FREEDOM VMU is unique in Lithuania for its liberal study system and academic freedom which allows students to decide when and what courses to take. Students also have the
4
opportunity to earn a minor studies certificate together with their major diploma. At present VMU has the most developed studies in humanities and social sciences; however, art and theology, as well as physical and natural sciences (Informatics, Mathematics, Physics and Environmental Sciences) are gaining an increasing popularity and recognition. The academic community of university now consists of more than 9000 students taught by 550 scholars who since the reestablishment of the university have brought forth 23 000 alumni. Even though most courses are taught in Lithuanian, there is a growing pool of various study and research opportunities in English. Currently, there are 7 full Master degree programmes taught in English. Great attention is being paid to teaching of foreign languages and students are offered the opportunity to study up to 23 different languages. The atmosphere at the VMU can be described as academic freedom, openness to the world, dedicated students and supportive staff.
LEARNING LANGUAGES @ VMU Centre of Foreign Languages at VMU provides students with a possibility to choose from up to 23 courses ranging from various modern to classical languages.
Since its reestablishment in 1989, VMU has focused on teaching English as a foreign language. Nowadays the centre also offers advanced level course in English for specific purposes as well as language related culture courses. Language teaching in the Centre of Foreign Languages is supported by a modern well-equipped ‘SANAKO 300’ computer laboratory that provides excellent facilities for computer assisted language learning, most effective in improving the students’ listening and speaking skills as well as in raising their general interactive and communicative competences. Teachers, who are qualified and experienced professionals, attempt to create a relaxed atmosphere in which students can learn a foreign language in an enjoyable and rewarding way. Learning a foreign language assists in developing and improving communication skills, fostering sociocultural understanding, promoting graduates’ employability as well as academic and professional mobility. This gives students an opportunity of learning a foreign language while at the same time developing other important skills.
5
ENRICH YOUR LIFE THROUGH STUDIES @ VMU VMU introduced a system of studies based on the three levels: Bachelor, Master and PhD. In some cases students may also choose between the full–time and part–time studies. The latter are more flexible, as their duration, time for lectures and consultations, as well as the exam schedule are designed in such a way that students could successfully combine studies at the university and professional activities.
BACHELOR LEVEL STUDIES @ VMU The first – Bachelor level, involves undergraduate studies and lasts for four years requiring obtaining 240 ECTS credits; the study programme culminates with the completion and presentation of a Bachelor Thesis. VMU invites international students to choose from a variety of Bachelor’s (BA) non-degree semester long courses which are offered in English and other foreign languages. For an updated list of offered courses please visit www.trt.vdu.lt English section for students.
MASTER LEVEL STUDIES @ VMU The second - Master level of studies, last for 1,5 or 2 years; its purpose is to deepen or expand the BA graduate’s competences in the chosen field. A student receives Master’s degree after successful completion of 120 ECTS credits and Master Thesis.

Since 1999, VMU has been participating in the European Community higher education programme “LLP / Erasmus”. “LLP / Erasmus”, the EU’s flagship education and training programme, emphasises student and staff mobility and European co-operation involving higher education institutions and other key players in the knowledge-based economy.

And since 2003, VMU has been a member of “Campus Europae“ university network. VMU is open to members of academic community from all over the world. Each year over 100 students and a number of teachers from different International universities come to VMU.
8
Together with an enriched study experience, “LLP / Erasmus” also provides exposure to different cultures. Over 140,000 lecturers have taken the opportunity to gain experience in one of the other 31 countries currently participating in the programme. As of 2010, within the „LLP / Erasmus“ programme VMU is collaborating with universities from all EU member countries, as well as with the ones from Norway and Switzerland. Its history and past has enriched both Europe and the rest of the world. The country was first mentioned in historic manuscripts more than a thousand years ago in 1009, and since then it has lived through a dramatic history of establishing its independence and statehood. It has the longest tradition of statehood among the Baltic States going back to the Middle Ages when it was the largest state in Eastern Europe. Nowadays, Lithuania is active Member State of the European Union (since 1 May 2004) and the North Atlantic Alliance (since 29 March 2004). In terms of the culture, Lithuania has attracted creative personalities of international repute, thus, the country may boast about a cultural field of distinctive gravity. Prominent artists of Polish, Russian, Jewish, German and other descent have loved this country and produced their creative works here. Modern Lithuanian culture is a peerless reflection of the meeting between Western and Eastern Europe and their sociocultural developments. Post-communist experience provides the creators of our culture with a deep understanding of occupation, manipulation and political censorship as well as resources for unconstrained improvisation, original artistic output and the formation of individual social environment.
