2 Corinthians 5:17 This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!

year? Or are we bringing a new purpose and a new attitude to extend ourselves to further God’s kingdom? We each must be on purpose for God. It is time.

A new year has begun and with it, many have vowed to changed habits, behaviors and attitudes. Some of the changes we have instituted will be implemented and become a permanent part of our lives. Other changes will not last and we will resort to the way we were before we promised that we were going to change.

It is time for Christians to renew and recommit to a Christ centered life. We must love and support each other while introducing our non-Christian family and friends to salvation through our actions and behaviors. This is the year to live Christian, not speak Christian. If we live Christian we can show a dying world the way to salvation.

It is important to really look at our relationship with Jesus. We accepted Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, we became new people, striving to live Christ like lives in all our behaviors and deeds. Are we still new people? Are we living as Christ like as we possibly can? Are we helping our sisters and brothers to find their salvation in a loving and kind way? Are we supporting each other on our respective Christian journeys? Are we bringing a renewal to this new

Exemplify the life of a Christian, actions resound louder than words. Help, love, support, contribute; do not criticize, slander, vilify or disparage family, friends or others. If there was a time when we and others ever needed elevating it is NOW! Sharon E. Locklear, Editor-in-Chief Twitter: @sharonelocklear Instagram: @sharonlocklear

HER FASHION / HI S S T YLE   BY VERNA V. NICKELBERRY

This year (2019) we wanted to introduce some awesome individuals that are business partners, be they husband and wife, sister and bother or best friends. The one thing they have in common is enjoying working together and serving their communities. In this issue (Winter 2019) we will begin with two of our eight business’s partners, in this segment entitled “Her Fashion / His Style” , we not only wanted to know about their business, but what is their go to fashion/style.

12 | Winter 2019

We begin with Mr. Tavarous & Mrs. Jennifer Allen: Jennifer: OPM: As fashion goes what is your go to fashion? JA: I love a skinny jeans! You can dress down with some cute flats or tennis shoes or glam it up with a heel and blazer. OPM: What made you chose your particular look for the photo shoot? JA: Believe it or not my husband actually chose my outfit. I enjoy wearing the things that he likes to see me in, so he suggested this combo I was all for it. OPM: What is your favorite colour? (Jennifer) JA: Pink! OPM: How does it make you feel when you dress in your favorite fashion look? JA: Confident! When I have something that hugs my curves the right way and fabrics that feel good on my skin I love it. Tavarous: OPM: Is this your go to style? TA: Pretty much I like dark colors and I take a more simplistic approach to fashion. Because of my height ( I am 6’6 ½) so I avoid a lot of bright colors and bold prints, I already feel like because of my height I stand out in a crowd and being a low key type of guy I don’t like to bring any more attention to myself.

“Shoes its always the shoes in my eyes shoes tell you so much about a person style...” handle the creative pieces! We help couples by relieving the stress, pressure and frustration that often comes with wedding planning. Our business Just Elope is unique in the sense that we will marry a couple anywhere. Past PopUp Weddings have included half court at a Pro-basketball game, Whataburger, the State Fair of Texas, a coffee shop vow renewal that aired on the CW33 news and a Christmas elopement live on Good Morning Texas. We also offer destination honeymoon and bachelorette party planning! OPM: Do you all enjoy serving your community? T&J: We are believers in giving back to our community and is currently seeking partnerships with Hospice Centers to provide free PopUp Weddings for the terminally ill. We have also kicked off our “I do’s for shoes” campaign that will provide back to school shoes for underprivileged kids.

OPM: What is your favorite color? TA: Black

OPM: Other than working together, is there anything that you do separately? Tavarous: I like to unwind by playing video games or watching sports, but I also like to be around my wife, she is my best friend. So, any moment that we get to be alone together I always look forward to it. I would choose her over anything else every time.

OPM: What is the one thing that you have to have that will complete your style? TA: Shoes! It’s always the shoes. In my eyes tell you so much about a person’s style. I’m a sneaker head like most people in my generation. I’m always buying shoes and I may not wear them for years or until I feel like the time is right.

Jennifer: I love to create! Anytime that I am not working or with my husband and kids I just love looking up new ways to expand and grow our business. With us having so much going on any true moments that we have I do prefer to spend alone with my husband. Date nights aren’t as frequent anymore so when it can be just the two of us I take advantage.

OPM: Now, share a little about your business. T&J: We are the owners of Just Elope LLC, which specializes in unique, intimate and creative “PopUp Weddings and Elopements.” Mr. Allen handles the backend legal aspect of the business, while Mrs. Allen gets to have all the fun and

HE R FASHION / HI S ST YLE   BY VERNA V. NICKELBERRY  Meet business partners Tiah Tomlin and Shawn Loving, who are a part of our “Her Fashion/His Style” and what they had to say. OPM: As fashion goes what is your go to fashion? Tiah: Since my journey with cancer, I am no longer able to wear heels for a long period of time (which l love and have a closet full) due to neuropathy. So this has changed my style a bit. Now whatever I wear, has to be comfortable but something cute. My Favorite go to is jeans, statement t-shirt, blazer and converse sneakers. Shawn: As far as fashion goes. My go to is a tailored suit, a crisp white shirt with a stylish tie and a contrasting handkerchief. OPM: What made you chose this particular look for the photo shoot? Tiah: I define my style as “Fun Flirty” – which mostly consists of colors, lace, stripes, polka dots, sequins, crystals, etc. But as I have gotten older, I find myself tapping more into that inner classy and sophisticated lady and chose this look for that reason.

14 | Winter 2019

Shawn: I have always been a suit lover. So, my choice for the photoshoot was easy. I wanted to go with navy double-breasted suit and a stylish paisley pattern shirt with blue and white wingtip shoes. A classic suit with a twist. OPM: Is black your favorite colour? (Tiah) Tiah: I absolutely love black. Even though I have added color to my wardrobe, I find myself drifting back to black. It goes with everything! OPM: How does it make you feel when you dress in your favorite fashion look? Tiah: When I am in my favorite fashion look, it’s like wonder woman scenario, I feel empowered and unstoppable. OPM: Shawn, do you always dress in a complete dress suit? Is this your go to style? Do you ever wear jean and sneakers? Lol Shawn: You can catch me in a pair of jeans and sneakers on the weekend. Jeans that a prefer or the 501 classic fit Levi’s and a fresh pair of shell toe Adidas. OPM: Now, share a little about your business. Tiah: My Style Matters is 501c3 nonprofit organization that is all about lifestyle. We provide cancer educational program and hands-on supportive services to build confidence in people of all ages, leading to a better quality of life. In addition, we provide specialized etiquette classes that allow kids to build their confidence and skills. Shawn: My Style Matters was born when I won Best Dressed Man for Esquire Magazine in 2006. Can’t believe I was homeless when I won? I always said, “Don’t look like your situation if you can help it.” I took to the classrooms teaching our youth why they should care about their appearance. Letting them know that 1st impressions are everything. I later added the etiquette piece because it was something that I thought was so needed. Table manners is a part of our day to day. While working as an educator in the Clayton County Public School District. I started as a substitute teacher and later became an art teacher. I had the opportunity to share some of the lessons I learned as a kid with my students. During the month of November, I let my students design their own placemats for Thanksgiving. My 5th grade class was being super creative, and I had a thought. I should teach them table manners as well. The etiquette part of the program was born.

“When I am in my favorite fashion look, it’s like wonder woman scenario, I feel empowered and unstoppable.” OPM: Do you both enjoy serving your community? Tiah: Absolutely. While giving back to others may be a blessing to them, it’s actually blessing me. Before, I felt like something was missing. I felt like I was just existing – going to work, paying bills and doing it all over again. But once we started My Style Matters, I knew that I was walking in my purpose. Shawn: Community service is not the most favorable thing to do in our free time, but it does have its rewards. I’m not just talking about possible rewards you physically earn, I’m talking about rewards in your community. The changes your service could create is endless, whether it is for homeless people, the environment, or just because you need it for school, they all have an impact on the community. OPM: Other than working together, is there anything that you do separately? Tiah: I am a patient advocate and travel all over sharing my journey and being the voice of the voiceless. In my spare time, you can find me taking a trip somewhere, attending an outdoor concerts or trying to learning something new. Shawn: Tiah, and I are like brother and sister. There are a few things I enjoy. Such as coaching boys basketball, cooking, traveling, thrift shopping, and attending concerts with my concert crew. Photo by Kimazing Photograpy, Atlanta, GA

Just to Encourage you

DE SIRIN G TO BE NEW   BY JEANETTE CHESTNUT-CHESTER, WORSHIP LEADER, CERTIFIED PERSONAL TRAINER

16 | Winter 2019

I watched a movie called “Ghost in a Shell, the synopsis of this movie is centered around a one of a kind cyber enhanced solider whose job is to battle enemies that tries to control people.

So, as we dive into 2 Corinthians 5, particularly verse 17, which says, “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”

In this age of all types of new inventions and new technologies, we have to keep things in the right prospective. We have to remember that man will always be looking for the next new and better thing. There will never be any satisfaction as long as we look to better ourselves with worldly newness outside of the will of the one that created us.

Then, we can look at 2 Corinthians 5:17 in this manner. Rather than still belonging to this world and its ways, all those in Christ are a “new creation,” which means that they have already participated in the passing away of the old style of living and the arrival of the new. The “new things” that have happened in Christ, however, are not private, spiritual experiences. They show up in our new attitude.

Whenever we walk in anything other than the truth and light, we become convinced that what we perceive is true. While it may be said that perception is reality, it would be helpful to know that perception is defined as the ability to see, hear, or become aware of something through the senses; senses which are limited in the human aspect.

Let’s take a look at the butterfly, which is a great example. A butterfly has four stages in its life cycle. Each stage is different. Each stage also has a different goal. The life cycle of a butterfly includes a process called metamorphosis where each butterfly goes through 4 stages from an egg to a larva, then to a pupa, and finally, they turn into an adult

butterfly. It has become a new and beautiful creation. When we commit our lives to Christ, and we allow His word to shape us, we began a greater metamorphosis, which is a change of the form or nature of a thing or person into a completely different one, by natural or supernatural means. In this case it is the supernatural power of the Living God that does the changing in us.

before. We stop looking back with regret and we began looking forward with expectation. We began to see with new eyes, hear with new ears, walk in newness, live in newness, and become new. We let go of all the old things that we once embraced as our truth, and we come into agreement with the real Truth, the truth as revealed to us by the only one that gives wisdom and understanding.

“To be new from the inside out is a wonderful opportunity that is given to anyone that desires it. ”

The Word of God uses the Greek word, “metamorphoo,” four times in the New Testament. This powerful word describes the transfiguration of Christ in the gospels as well as the change of believers in becoming more like Christ while on earth. The word literally means “metamorphosis,” or “change in form.”

Let me encourage you with this; when you find yourself allowing the Word of God to shape you, there will be growing pains. These pains are not meant to kill or maim you, they are to strengthen you so that as you become new, you handle things differently. You began to have a new process in the way you think. To be new! What an awesome concept. We sing, and we pray “Lord Make me brand new”. Yet scripture tells us that if any man be in Christ, he is a new creation, this means that when one comes in contact with the awesomeness of Christ as Savior, Redeemer, Healer, Lord, Master, Keeper, then we no longer look at things like we did

And as we walk in this newness of life with trust and reliance on Christ, we stress less, worry less, have less anxiety until we realize that all of that oldness has passed away, and we are indeed new.

To be new from the inside out is a wonderful opportunity that is given to anyone that desires it. God will give you a new heart, a new mindset, a new walk, a new talk and new relationships. He will give you beauty for ashes, he will give you joy for your sorrows, he will give peace like a river, that’s new, he will your mourning into dancing, that’s new. God will make rivers in the desert, when you feel alone, he will be comfort for you. God makes all things new. So, go ahead and let Him make you brand new. Be abundantly blessed with Love and Peace.

For Your Health

SPIRITUAL WELLNE SS   BY PAOLA TENNON, RN, BSN, MBA/HCA, CCM                                                  “Therefore, if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new”, 2Corinthians 5:17 KJV. This scripture denotes a multitude of topics ranging from faith to spiritual transformation. However, for the purpose of this article I have elected to write on the topic of ‘Spiritual Wellness’. I must admit that I was somewhat perplexed regarding this scripture and how I could explain its relationship to our spiritual health and spiritual wellness. But, as I reflect back over my 42 years of experience in the healthcare arena, I can remember numerous occasions in which people who had a strong spiritual make up could be easily identified. Typically, you would find them offering support or encouragement to others. Families helping to comfort other families while they waited together in the critical care waiting room, or staff assisting and sometimes praying with patients and their families. Then, there were the patients, themselves, who upon receiving devastating news from the doctor about their condition would reach out to give reassurance to the one giving them the bad news. There are so many examples of what one can do when their spiritual health and wellness is optimized. Our spiritual health is a component of our spiritual well-being and should be an integral part of our holistic health practices. The UC Davis Department of Religious Studies defines

22 | Winter 2019

Spiritual wellness as; “the realm of wellness that lets us find meaning in life events and define our individual purpose. It can be depicted through various factors including religious faith, values, ethics and morals”. In order to better understand the concept of spiritual wellness, we must go back to the Book of Genesis and the creation of man. In the beginning God created heaven and earth and on the 6th day He created male and female in His likeness and in His image, Genesis 1:26-27. Christian Doctrine teaches us that we serve a triune God; “For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one”, [1John 5:7]. Therefore, if man was created in the image and likeness of God; man, also was created with a three-fold nature. This fact is validated in 1 Thessalonians 5:23; “May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ”. The diagram below is reflective of the 3 components that makes up man (body, soul, and spirit). This illustration is from “The Faith and Health Connection Network’, which teaches on biblical truths of health and wholeness. The three-fold nature of the whole man interconnects with one another, however without a strong personal faith, the connections grow weak. 1Corinthians 15:44-45 tells us that,

“there is a natural body and there is a spiritual body”. Verse 45 also states that;” the first man Adam was made a living soul”. When we consider the wholeness of mankind, we can better understand that we are more than just a physical being. We are 3 in 1. Each component has a different purpose, each component is responsible for different aspects of our life and each component has value. Unfortunately, we often tend to compartmentalize these component rather than to look at them as being parts of a whole. A closer look at each component will

help lend clarity as to how they interrelate with each other and how they collectively impact our overall life. The Cambridge Dictionary defines body as the physical structure of a person or an animal, including the bones, flesh, and organs. It is the outermost part of man that enables us to connect with the physical world utilizing our 5 senses. As the diagram above indicates; our body is multifaceted and contains multiple organs and systems that interact with our innermost parts of man which are the soul and the spirit. It is through our body that we experience the physical aspects or negative outcomes that may result from chronic disease processes, emotional or mental challenges, abuse of substances such as alcohol, tobacco or drugs and etc. One can also, be impacted by limited spiritual exposure or spiritual abandonment which may present as a sense of loss, hopelessness, out of control emotional behavior or despair. Some may ask, why this should matter? Scripture is very clear in its description regarding the importance of the body. Factors that the Apostle Paul confirms about the body are as follows; our body is not our own, our body is holy, our body is God’s temple, our body is the body of Christ ( The Church) of which He is the head, and our body

is the dwelling place of the Holy Spirit, 1Corinthians 6:19, Colossians 1:18 and Romans 3: 16-17 KJV. In addition, our body has value because it cost God something. The price was paid in full through the death of His beloved son, Jesus Christ; “for ye are bought with a price, therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s”, 1Corinthians 6:20. Paul beseeches us in Romans 12:1-2 to “present our bodies a living sacrifice acceptable pleasing to God”. In order to do this, we must take care of our bodies. “It is sown a natural body, but it is raised a spiritual body”, 1Corinthians 15:44. Genesis 2:7 validates that man has a soul; “The Lord God formed man of the ground and breath into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living soul”. The soul is precious to God and has worth. It was given to humanity by God as stated in the Book of Ezekiel 18:4; “all souls belong to God”. And, in Mark 8:36-37 Jesus poses 2 very importance questions concerning the soul; “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world and lose his own soul; or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?” These questions show the value associated with one’s soul. As Christians, we are charged with spreading the gospel of Christ for the saving of souls. Richard Powers, author of ‘Pathway to Spiritual Understanding’ states that; “the soul is the inner man, it is the seat of all affection, emotions and desires. He further states that it coordinates the thoughts and activities of the body and the spirit”. Likewise, Dale Fletcher, author of Faith and Healing Connection writes that; “the soul gives us our personality and encompasses 3 major component which include our mind, our will and our emotions”. Each of these components are connected to the physical body through complex systems inclusive of the nervous system, the immune system, the muscular system, endocrine system, etc. When these systems are under stress, they can negatively affect the physical body. Thus, the soul is

ordinarypeoplemagazine | 23

in a constant state of regeneration or renewal, “He restoreth my soul”, Psalm 23:3 KJV. The Bible also, teaches us that God created in us the spirit of man; “…saith the Lord which stretcheth forth the heavens and layeth the foundation of the earth and formeth the spirit of man within him”, Zechariah 12:1 KJV.“ It is the spirit that enables us to have meaning and purpose in our life and it is through our faith that the spirit within us is able to commune with God’s Holy Spirit, Romans 8:16 KJV. Scripture admonishes us, “not to be reflective of man’s wisdom, but rather, by the Spirit and of power of God. For, we have received not the spirit of the world, but the spirit of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God”, 1Corinthians 2:12. Regrettably, many of us remain in spiritual infancy rather than spiritual maturation. Spirituality at one time was considered foundational in healthcare and was inclusive of religion, culture, spiritual beliefs and spiritual practices. It is vital to our ability to cope with illness or other sources of stress and it is a fundamental component of who we are. Unfortunately, over the past several decades it became overshadowed by the far-reaching advancements in science, medical technology and medical practice. However, in recent years the once underestimated power associated with religion or spiritual beliefs is now an ongoing topic of research worldwide.

More: The Impact of Religious Practice on Social Stability’. His research indicated that over the past decade, “considerable research has emerged that demonstrates the benefits of religious practice within society and that religious practice promotes the well-being of individuals, families, and the community. He further states that; “consistent practice of religion is linked to a healthier and more stable family life, reduction in the incidence of substance abuse, crime in addition to an increase in physical and mental health, longevity and that the long-term effects can be intergenerational”. According to an article on Medpage. com; “Studies have shown an association between religious/ spiritual beliefs and both mental and physical health, treatment adherence, medical decision-making, ethical issues and values, and even survival”. The article further states that; “The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), the World Health Organization (WHO), and the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) recommend that spiritual issues be addressed in clinical care and education of health professionals”.

“Scientific research has shown that a lack of a spiritual life can lead to illness and disease.”

Scientific research has shown that a lack of a spiritual life can lead to illness and disease. In addition, studies of mental health patients and the elderly have shown a more positive change in behaviour in those who have a spiritual connection. A collection of studies from 1976 to 2006 were recounted by Rich Deem and gives insight as to the positive effect of religion on health. Other study showed that “those without spiritual lives or fragmented spiritual lives tend to be more fearful, anxious, angry and depressed”. Similarly, an article written by Patrick Fagan a fellow researcher and member of The Heritage Foundation wrote a report on civil society entitled; ‘Why Religion Matters Even

Ongoing research in this area will help us to work toward goals of spiritual fitness and spiritual wellness. 1 Timothy 4:7-8 (NLT) encourages us to; “…spend time and energy in training for spiritual fitness”. It also tells us that; “Physical exercise has some value, but spiritual exercise is much more important for it promises a reward in both this life and the next”. This is a process which is centered around God’s principles for healthy living and which are revealed throughout the Bible. These principles are merely guidelines set forth

to direct us and help us to understand God’s will for our lives. “Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth 3John 1:2 KJV. Many of the benefits of spiritual health and wellness are pointed out in this article. The benefits are many, but requires focus and commitment. Many personal trainers, couches and athletes develop a workout plan using the acronym ‘FITT”. ‘F’ is for frequency, ‘I’ stands for intensity, ‘T’ is for the amount of time you dedicate and ‘T’ is the type of activity you engaged in. Dale Fletcher, author of Faith and Healing wrote an article entitles ‘Get FITT’ utilizing this same acronym to promote spiritual wellness and help us to improve our spiritual health. When applying this strategy, this author used prayer as an example. This spiritual exercise was as follows: ‘F’-how often or how frequently do you pray? ‘I’- what is the intensity in which you prayed, is it gently or do you cry out in anguish? ‘T’- what is the length of time you prayed, or how long do you pray? And, ‘T’- what is your type of pray. Is it to give praise and adoration, was it for penitence and asking for forgiveness or

REF ER ENC E S

was it for petition or asking God for something? Embracing this strategy will enable you to become more spiritually fit; which in turn will lead to improvements in spiritual awareness and in your spiritual health. And this will lead to spiritual wellness. This is a process in which the spiritual nature of man is transformed. Romans 12:12 cautions us “not to be conformed to this world, but to be transformed”. Spiritual transformation is a fundamental change in a person’s sacred or spiritual life, as define by Wikipedia. Pointers for improving your spiritual health and wellness include; prayer and meditation, spiritual journaling, private or corporate worship, Bible reading and study, thinking positively and etc. It is by God’s grace that we become more Christ-like. “And all who have been united with Christ in baptism have put on Christ, like putting on new clothes “, Galatians 3:27 NLT.

DR. LATARSHA D. HOLDEN   BY VERNA V. NICKELBERRY

We had the great opportunity to interview this awesome and strong woman, who against all odds, got the victory hopeless and homelessness. Dr. LaTarsha D. Holden, shares her story with us. Dr. LaTarsha D. Holden From Homelessness to Political Candidate in the “2017” election, from GED to Doctorate degree and 12x Published Author OPM: Did you ever think things would get better? LH: Honestly, no I didn’t. At thirty-five years old, homeless with six children, uneducated, under-employed and without family support I didn’t see any glimpse of hope. The odds were stacked against me, but God had other plans for me. I

wasn’t raised in the church so I didn’t have a relationship with God, we met at my darkest moment. Had it not been for His mercy and grace I don’t know where I would be. I found myself at a crossroad when we were living in a boarded-up house as squatters. Scared and lost I made a vow that the streets would not raise my six children nor the jails would house them. I knew that I had to do something to fight to change the trajectory of my family and that’s when I decided to enroll in college. This was not an easy decision, because the last time I’d been in school I was fifteen years old. OPM: What was the reason that caused your family to become homeless? LH: After leaving an abusive marriage, I was stripped of any sense of identity,

my self-esteem and self-worth had plummeted; and not having any job-related skills, with only a GED put me in a vulnerable place filled with hopelessness. I didn’t know where and how to start over thus, leaving my family in a homeless and hopeless situation. OPM: What was your turning point? LH: I realized had twelve eyes watching me and that if I wanted different for my family, I had to fight to change the direction that we were heading in. Working my way up from rock bottom was the hardest thing I’ve ever done. It was a lonely and painful journey, but God saw me through. OPM: How long were you and your family homeless? LH: We were homeless for two years. We slept in our car, shelter, scrapped up money for a hotel, empty apartment, sometimes with family, and a boarded-up house as squatters. It was a hard time for us all, so many different emotions, but we held strong as a family. OPM: How do it feel to go from a GED to a Doctorate degree? LH: It makes me feel proud. I thank God every day for how far He has brought me. I became the first one in my family to go to college and graduate. I never imagined that this was possible, especially after dropping out in the tenth grade, having four children by the age of twenty-two and being homeless my first two years of college. Only God could have seen me through my journey. OPM: What made you run for City Council in “2017?” LH: I made a vow to God when I was homeless, hopeless and in despair that if He would help me, I would fight for others. Once I completed my educational journey, I remembered the vow I made and I decided to run for City Council in Atlanta District 11. I knew that I had to go back and fight for the marginalized, homeless, displaced, forgotten, and those that were without hope. I understood the plight of the people and I knew what it felt like when everyone looks the other way. OPM: What inspired you to become an author? LH: As a community advocate, my books became an outlet to help encourage, uplift, bring awareness and spread

LH: When we were homeless, I taught my six children how to serve others. I did several events in the community at our lowest moments to show my children the meaning of true leadership. My legacy to my children and grandchildren is “Service to Others” OPM: What are your children doing now? LH: After teaching them about the meaning of leadership, they are leading in their own way. PARTIAL OR TOTAL

SPIRITUAL METAMORPHOSIS?   BY VANDERBILT BRABSON III, AUTHOR  When I was a pre-school boy, my siblings use to refer to me as the bug doctor, and for good reason. It was primarily because of my fascination with nature—especially the little creatures who made their homes under rocks and logs and beneath the earth’s surface. Of course, my inquisitiveness had its downside as well. On countless occasions I wound up getting bitten or stung by a number of insects who felt threatened by my intrusion into their world. However, as I look back and remember those days long, I especially recall the two among the many that fascinated me most—the beautiful multi-colored butterfly and the praying mantis. Both of these insects undergo a metamorphosis in order to move from the egg to the adult stage. The praying mantis in its journey to adulthood travels through what is called a 3-stage incomplete metamorphosis (egg, nymph, and adult), while the butterfly in its journey to adulthood travels through what is called a 4-stage complete

34 | Winter 2019

metamorphosis (egg, larva, pupa, and adult). Metamorphosis involves a change in the body form and habits of these insects during their life cycle. This process of change is truly amazing, especially when one considers the fact that once these insects travel completely through each preordained stage toward adulthood, as adults they instinctively and naturally behave in the way a mature insect should. Paul declared in his letter to the Corinthians believers, “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” 2 Corinthians 5:17 Let’s face it, as Christians we have all been guilty of failing to stop and take spiritual self-inventory of our lives. A spiritual self-inventory is absolutely necessary if we are to assess where we are in the five metamorphosis stages of our spiritual life cycle. So here are the questions for each of us as believers to

ponder: what spiritual stage am I really in, and am I actually moving from one spiritual stage to the next toward genuine spiritual maturity? So, one may ask: what are the five spiritual stages? I am happy you asked. The five stages of spiritual growth in the life of those who have become believers actually begins with our spiritually lost stage: Consider the five stages below: 1. SPIRITUALLY DEAD: Individuals in this stage have not yet come to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. Why not? It could be any number of reasons ranging from never having been exposed to scriptural teaching regarding who Jesus really is to just outright rejection of the gospel message proclaiming Jesus Christ is Lord and Savior. Also, let’s not discount that many individuals who are spiritually dead are religious—having been brought up to believe in God, but never having truly surrendered their hearts to Jesus Christ. These individuals will profess to know God, but in reality, they truly do not. Why not? Because Jesus does not personally know them. He does not sit upon the throne in their heart (Matthew 7:21). It is never enough to claim we know Jesus, when in reality Jesus does not know us. If this is truly our spiritual state, then we are still in our sins and therefore spiritually dead. 2. SPIRITUAL INFANT: Individuals in this spiritual stage have truly accepted Jesus Christ as Savior; however, due to being totally new in the faith, these individuals need to join a local fellowship of believers where he or she can be nurtured on the spiritual milk of the word of God. As it is with all infants, including spiritual ones, at this stage practically everything is about the triune self: me, myself, and I. That’s just the way physical and spiritual babies are. The Hebrew writer wrote: “For every one that useth milk is unskillful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe [Hebrews 5:13].” And Peter’s encouragement in his first epistle to the saints wrote, “As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby [1 Peter 2:2].”

3. SPIRITUAL CHILD: Individuals who have grown spiritually beyond the stage of spiritual infancy to this spiritual stage are growing in their relationship with our Lord and noticeably growing in their relationship with other believers. These individuals are listening to and applying God’s Word in their lives and allowing other Christian believers to walk with them in their journey as disciples following their Lord Jesus Christ. While these individuals are no longer spiritual infants, it is wise for them, as it is for us all, to stay prayerful not only about their actions but their motives behind their actions. This will help to ensure one’s motives are God-honoring and Christcentered. Why? Because being relatively new to the faith, spiritual children are learning to cultivate intimacy with our Lord and to avoid motives which are self-serving. At this stage the spiritual child may unwittingly commit many spiritual errors, and therefore those older and wiser in the faith must come along beside them, encourage them, and remind them of two truths: 1) God truly loves them and 2) failure is not final. The Apostle John wrote, “My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: 2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world. 12 I write unto you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you for his name’s sake [1 John 2:1-2, 12].”

ordinarypeoplemagazine | 35

4. SPIRITUAL YOUNG ADULT: At this stage the motives of individual believers have now shifted from the temptation of being self-centered to being more Christ- and others-centered. These believers are beginning to understand that it is more blessed to give than to always be on the receiving end. They are no longer easily deceived by Satan’s wicked devices and schemes. Putting Christ first, ministering to others, and being doers of the Word have now become the greater priority for them. John in his epistle addresses those at this spiritual stage when he wrote, “I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one. [1 John 2:14b]” 5. SPIRITUAL ADULT PARENT: Individuals in this spiritual stage have become grounded in God’s word. These individuals are continually cultivating a deep, growing, and abiding relationship with the Heavenly Father through His Son. These believers consistently seek to model God’s Word in their daily lives. They are Christ-centered, God-dependent, and sensitive to the spiritual and physical needs of others. Spiritual adult parents tend to reproduce themselves because mature, healthy sheep—not sick sheep—spiritually reproduce themselves. Such individuals are committed to the development of spiritual maturity in other disciples of Jesus Christ. John in his epistle was addressing individuals in this spiritual stage when he wrote, “I write unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. [1 John 2:13a, 14a].”

36 | Winter 2019

What about you? Does God see you as a spiritually maturing believer? If not, why not? Are the appetites of your flesh controlling your life and causing you to fall in and out of fellowship with our Lord? Are you in tune with God’s will for your life? If your walk before our Lord has not been in line with God’s word, and you now desire to be a spiritually mature Christian, tell Him so. Please pray the following: Dear Heavenly Father, please help me not cater to the appetites of my flesh, but to seek You with all my heart and soul, mind and strength. Admittedly, I readily confess that I have failed many times to follow the leading of Thy Holy Spirit. I know it is Your desire that I be a spiritually mature Christian, and that too is now my desire. Please, from this day forth, give me a heart and a life that is totally committed to You. I ask these things in Jesus’ name. Amen. “ Jesus calls us to his rest, and meekness is His method. The meek man cares not at all who is greater than he, for he has long ago decided that the esteem of the world is not worth the effort.” A.W. Tozer Aiden Wilson [A.W.] Tozer. HAPPY NEW YEAR TO THE NEW YOU!   BY PARIS DUCKER

How many times have we received mailers via email, snail mail and social media containing the following phrases at the beginning of the new year? • • • •

Therefore, if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. 2 Corinthians 5:17

Another Chance for a Makeover A Fresh Start and a Clean Slate New Year New You What Resolution(s) will you Keep in 2019?

I know that phrases are supposed to encourage those of us that may not be as motivated as we should be to want to change, improve, discard, renew or stop certain habits and or behaviors. Yes, the pictures they present, the catchy phrases they use and even the background music may possibly propel us to get up and consider how we will start the New Year differently. Let’s be transparent here (ok I’ll start); after hearing and seeing these same messages year after year; we can become indifferent and lethargic with wanting to change our outer/ inner self. It takes a lot of effort to decide to make a change; read the contract (Yes! the

fine print too), commit to the process, pull out the credit/debit card to pay for this great opportunity AND stay consistent. There are disclaimers; non-refundable fees; nor is there opportunity for 24- hour round the clock care that would include receiving an immediate response to your concerns or when you are having a setback. We know it has been proven that usually after the first 30-45 days of committing to change; many of us that make this attempt to will oftentimes fall back into our same habits. Pretty depressing huh? But wait, before you decide to turn the page and not read the rest of this inspirational feature; I have Good News that Can and Will change your life completely! This news comes with guarantees, processes, instant access to the author of this plan, life lessons, a team of 3 that will NEVER leave or forsake you, examples of those that have experienced what you are going through, and it is Life Changing! Our promise for becoming a new creation is found in 2 Corinthians 5:17 – Therefore

if any one (be) in Christ, (there is) a new creation; the old things have passed away; behold all things have become new. What a wonderful promise that is to us from our Father God; our Creator, the Author and Finisher of our faith! We have a Real promise of becoming a new creation by doing a simple thing – BE in Christ. Please pay attention to the words of this verse and what decision must be made in order to be a partaker of these promises. Best news is you don’t have to pay for this complete transformation! As a new creation we are promised and can look forward to a fresh perspective on life, a new mindset, new desires, new and exciting joy, and a new hope for something that is everlasting (Eternal Life). Renewal happens in our natural and spiritual habits. We will SEE life differently, THINK about ourselves and others differently (learn to LOVE as God Loves); PRAY and SEEK God for wisdom and guidance. Our appetites will change over time (some immediately) and we should desire to please our God. Believe and take hold of this scripture that internal change happens according to 2 Corinthians 5:19 namely, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and He has committed to us the word of reconciliation.

Amen, to the glory of God through us. What a marvelous covenant that God has given us regarding his love towards us, his plans and his ways. His promises towards us are so that His Glory is manifested through us. What better way for his glory to show through us than becoming NEW creatures? I hope you feel my excitement and decide to one of the following: Commit (if you are not a new creation in Christ), Re-Commit (if you have fallen by the wayside) or Re-Member (if you are still a new creation but need to meditate more on His Word and seek His face). If you have not committed your life to Christ and would like to; simply repeat this prayer aloud: Lord Jesus, for too long I’ve kept you out of my life. I know that I am a sinner and that I cannot save myself. No longer will I close the door when I hear you knocking. By faith I gratefully receive your gift of salvation. I am ready to trust you as my Lord and Savior. Thank you, Lord Jesus, for coming to earth. I believe you are the Son of God who died on the cross for my sins and rose from the dead on the third day. Thank you for bearing my sins and giving me the gift of eternal life. I believe your words are true. Come into my heart, Lord Jesus, and be my Savior. Amen. Happy New Year to the New You!

The Prophet Isaiah also tells us of God’s promise of renewal to us: Isaiah 43:18-19 “Do not call to mind the former things, Or ponder things of the past. 19“Behold, I will do something new, Now it will spring forth; Will you not be aware of it? I will even make a roadway in the wilderness, Rivers in the desert. 2 Corinthians 1:20 The promises of God in Him are Yes and in Him

FROM WITHIN...   BY VERNA V. NICKELBERRY

Happy New Year! It seems as if 2018 zoom by with the quickness! So this quarter’s scripture is so befitting, God is always on point. “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” 2 Corinthians 5: 17 As 2018 was coming to a close (old things are passed away) you could feel a shift began to take place.
