Uber Craze - How Impacted Businesse
Currently, one of the biggest restaurant trends in the world is (hands down) Uber Eats. If you are new to this buzzword, then let us inform you that it’s more than just a cool trend and has impacted restaurants who have partnered with them. Uber Eats is basically a spinoff of the transportation app – Uber in which a customer orders a transportation vehicle to pick up and drop off to their booked destination. Similarly, by using Uber Eats, customers place their food order by selecting one of the hundreds of restaurants via their mobile phones and get food delivered right to their home. Once the food is ordered, the customers can keep a track record of their order from its prep work to delivery status. Many restaurants chose to work with Uber Eats to help make their deliveries faster and to ease the burden of having to add delivery staff to their business. While UberEats first tested this service in Los Angeles in 2014, it has grown and expanded over multiple countries around the world. Its impact has been witnessed by many restaurants in different parts of the world with positive and negative effects. While it is too early to give a final verdict on the full effect of Uber Eats, restaurants have had to make some adjustments. In 2017, restaurants that partnered with Uber Eats had to give up 35% of the cost of every order that was made through their portal to the app. Uber Eats were called upon to lower their rising delivery fee which affected the overall profits made by restaurants. Because of this, restaurants had to downsize their restaurant menus to minimise their loss. This tactic was a deliberate way to encourage customers to come and visit the restaurant in person, look over more items on their menu, and eat it there or get it packed and enjoy it elsewhere. One such example is the Auckland restaurant Sushi which had to limit their menu on the Uber Eats app to prevent losing money on dishes. The worst aspect is that restaurants are not allowed to make changes to the prices that are mentioned in the Uber Eats app which can be very frustrating for business owners. While this is the most notable drawback of getting food delivered via a third party delivery system, many restaurants have talked about some of its positive effects as well. Restaurants in Melbourne, Australia have incurred a net benefit from this app as now they don’t have to worry about food delivery at all and the app delivers the food faster than any in-house delivery man. The app has also helped in promoting these restaurants and increasing their profit margin. It is safe to say that like any other service in the world, Uber Eats has proven to have both positive and negative effects on restaurants.
