elcome VM readers, it’s that time of year again for our signature event; Cars & Couture hosted by ExecuJet at the Tampa International Jet Center. This year we are proud to introduce our presenting sponsor Jabil, a global manufacturing solutions company. The annual charity event benefiting Autism Speaks promises a fabulous evening of music, auctions, food, fashion, exotic cars, jets, and fine wine and cigars. The enclosed event program includes all the details for the evening as well a list of all the sponsors who have helped make the event a success. Luxe Fashion Group (LFG) is grateful for all the amazing sponsors and donors who participate in our events throughout the year to help raise funds for local and national organizations like Autism Speaks. Charity Event Sponsorship has become a popular way for companies to market their brands. I have been a strong believer in this type of advertising for a long time and utilize it myself by sponsoring other events in the community. This type of sponsorship has proven to not only be an effective marketing tool for businesses of all sizes but an effective fundraising instrument for charitable organizations as well. LFG is excited to announce the launch of Cars & Couture in two additional cities in 2014; this luxury lifestyle event has received attention from thousands, including celebrities, media, and local and national companies. Thank you for everyone’s support in making this event a success in raising funds for Autism Speaks.

Love

AT FIRST CAR AUTHOR DONA CROWLEY PHOTOGRAPHER JONATHAN RIDGELY

It’s been over 25 years since the day Danna and Jeff Alloway said “I Do”, however their marriage is not the only success these two entrepreneurs are celebrating. The success of their businesses has brought them plenty to enjoy; including a beautiful home and six amazing rides. Danna and Jeff Alloway first met in the fall of 1979 while Danna was cheering with Jeff ’s sister for their high school football team. Jeff told his sister, “I am going to marry that girl”, and offered Danna a ride home in his Mustang. On the way home, Jeff was pulled over and Danna talked the police officer out of the ticket. Then Jeff knew for sure he had met the girl of his dreams. After several months of dating they decided to go their separate ways, nevertheless, their love for cars grew. When Danna returned from London in 1987, she received a 280 ZX for graduation. Shortly after, the two car lovers met again outside of a local shopping center. Danna spotted a guy in his new corvette and peeled out, yelling “oooooh baby”. They were married less than a year later. The Alloways now have two beautiful children and own several successful companies including three Air Conditioning Companies. Their hard work and success of their companies have given them the opportunity to enjoy life at high speeds. Danna and Jeff ’s goals are sincere; to make sure their kids are prosperous, continue to grow their education and businesses, and to live life to the fullest while helping others that are less fortunate. Although they both share a love for Ferraris, their sense of style is a little different. Danna always looks fabulous in bling while Jeff is comfortable in jeans and a Ferrari shirt. After interviewing these two, I had to ask for a marriage tip. Danna answered, “Marriage is a wild ride, just make sure to tighten your seat belt and hold on with all your might!” Jeff answered “Happy wife, happy life.” I’m certain; this ride will be a long one.

COURT AUTHOR BETSY GENTRY

WHETHER YOU ARE AN EXPERIENCED TENNIS PLAYER OR A NOVICE, THE QUESTION OF WHAT TO WEAR ON THE COURTS IS ALWAYS ON THE MINDS OF PLAYERS. CAN YOU WEAR BRIGHT COLORS ON THE COURTS TO A COUNTRY CLUB? WHAT ABOUT WEARING SHORTS AND A TANK TOP TO AN ATHLETIC CLUB? WHILE TENNIS WAS TRADITIONALLY BUILT ON WEARING ALL WHITE PRIMARILY TO KEEP COOLER ON THE COURT, OVER THE PAST SEVERAL DECADES THE FORMALITY HAS RELAXED AND WILD AND BRIGHT COLORS ARE OFTEN SEEN ON THE COURTS, NOTABLY THE US OPEN IN NEW YORK. Fashionable and elite players have helped relax the traditional rules, and recreational players are expanding their wardrobes to more daring colors schemes. If you plan to play tennis in the Bay Area, you may wonder, “What are the other ladies wearing on the courts, is my attire acceptable, and will my current outfit fit in?” After inquiring about what’s in the closets of the tennis fashionistas in Tampa and shopping the local retail stores, I found some answers. Nordstrom, located at International Plaza in Tampa carries Nike and Adidas Stella McCartney. Tennis enthusiast, Beth Novello prefers Nike on the courts due to its sizing. “Nike is my go-to brand for skirts because they run true to size for an XS. Other brands in an XS run big and it does not fit me well.” Sports Authority located on Westshore Blvd in Tampa also carries highly acclaimed brands such as Under Armour, Nike and Adidas. Both stores have a limited tennis selection and full retail prices. Outside of selling popular brands such as Nike, Adidas and KSwiss, MP Tennis located on North Dale Mabry promotes the brand Athletic DNA. ADNA is an American sports apparel company based in Seattle which evolved from sponsoring athletes, junior tennis players, ATP Tour players, coaches, and academies 22 | VM Fall 2013

to manufacturing clothing for youth and adult tennis players. The company is run by former University of Illinois tennis player, Mike Calkins. The clothing is typically less traditional, abandoning the ‘country club look’ with bold colors and designs and is geared for high-performance athletes. LuLuLemon has recently caught the eye of many trendy tennis ladies in the Bay area. The brand has increased in popularity on the courts due to its convenience of the new store located in Hyde Park Village in South Tampa. Tennis member of HIAC, Frances Tierney enjoys the Pacesetter skirts because they are cute and functional. USTA 4.5 player, Lisa Haidermota prefers LuLuLemon’s Power Y Tank and Run Speed Shorts due to its lightweight fabric and built in shorts. Sweaty Betty is another trendy brand, but not as popular in the Bay area as it only has one boutique store in SoHo (not South Howard) in New York City. USTA women’s 3.0 doubles player, Jennifer Garlick, made the switch from mainstream brands to Sweaty Betty after noticing an abundance of players wearing the same brands and styles on the courts. “Sweaty Betty is more classic tennis attire, with an emphasis on solids and whites but with a bit of modern flair. The materials are suitable for the hot and humid Florida climate. I wanted to own a tennis outfit that everyone else wasn’t wearing on the courts.”

Hunter’s Green Country Club carries Sofibella, JoFit and K-Swiss. Hunter’s Green Country Club Tennis Directory, Allegra Campos claims Sofibella’s lines are very popular due to their fabulous fabric, trendy styles and colors. Campos also says her members enjoy Jofit’s because of their sporty and athletic fits and K-Swiss provides a great outfit and keeps the price point down. Kellie Cyr, current captain of three Bay Area teams states, “Hands down my favorite tennis apparel is Sofibella. I have been captaining for a long time and Sofibella is my “go to” for uniforms for my teams. It is so comfortable, fits well and wears better than the other leading brands!”

“I wanted to own a tennis outfit that everyone else wasn’t wearing on the courts.” Fashion plays a major part in what to wear on the courts, but so does protecting players’ skin. Players are often spotted wearing long sleeved tops even during the summer months in the extreme Florida heat to avoid sun exposure. Martha Garzon developed a line of UV sportswear for men and women in 2006 focusing on fabrics with breath-ability and comfort in combination with the latest trends. All products are tested and certified by the SGS Testing and Certification Company in Shanghai, China. Garzon says, “After spending 6 years playing in the WTA tour and teaching tennis for over 15 years, I have spent countless hours in the sun. This has made me realize the need for a fashionable line of sportswear that can provide total sun protection, while being light and breathable for the various demands of athletes and all of those who spend time in the sun.” Recreational tennis player, Kelly Pruett made the switch to the brand when her husband was diagnosed with skin cancer making the reality of sun exposure all too real in her household. Although brands such as Nike, Adidas, KSwiss, and others have been leaders in tennis fashion world for decades, many women are looking for more. Due to the fact that more women are going from the courts to other daily activities such as out to a luncheon or picking the kids up from school, the leading brands are often times not producing apparel women can wear throughout the day that is stylish and comfortable. However, game changing brand Monreal London recognizes this gap and intends to fill it. Founder Stefani Grosse, who previously worked for Donna Karan and Calvin Klein, has always loved tennis but after failing to find a brand that suited her needs she created her own. Grosse’s intention is to create something as stylish as it is functional and sexy. Of her Resort 2014 collection Grosse states, “I wanted to create a collection that is so stylish and versatile that you would also want to wear it off the court, exploring the town and markets in flip flops, or for drinks in heels.” Monreal London’s line debuted in Spring 2013 and was featured in both US and British Vogue. The eye catching collection has been picked up by many celebrities. Victoria Beckham was spotted purchasing a tennis dress from the spring line at Harrod’s during Wimbledon. Dresses from Monreal London start around $250, respectively. Monreal London is currently available at yoox. com and accessories available Harbour Island Athletic Club and Spa in Tampa. HIAC is one of four tennis clubs in the country who currently carry accessories from the line.

The way we dress communicates volumes. Our choices say a lot about our style and how we feel.

When I wear a red suit, I feel empowered and bold. When I wear yellow, I feel smart and confident. When I wear green, I feel calm. How do you feel when you wear color? What about the absence of color? An all black outfit without a touch of color, jewelry, or any type of accessory may feel stuffy and dark, while the same outfit with turquoise jewelry or a purple scarf may feel very elegant and fashionable. “Colorful items in your closet will end up being the most versatile pieces you own. They can be dressed up and the colors enhanced. Or you can put with jeans or solid accessories to tone down. You will not regret buying a colorful blazer or pair of shoes,” shared Crystal Lockinour, our wardrobe stylist. Versatile colorful accessories can be used over and over again and can be worked into many seasons.

WINTER is the perfect time for layering fabrics and fashion pieces not only for warmth but also for stylish looks as you prepare to face the elements. When weather gets gloomy, cold or rainy, dressing in fun colors or patterns brightens anyone’s day. Wearing textured purple or bright orange tights under shorts or a light weight dress extends these pieces so they can be worn for several seasons.

SPRING is a season that inspires me to rework my closet and make room for summer or vacation clothes that are fun, brighter in color, and lighter in fabric. Temperatures are perfect for spending more time outdoors. Remember to keep a bright colored wrap or large scarf in the car for those chilly nights.

SUMMER means baring brightly polished toes and wearing sandals or walking barefoot and feeling sand between your toes. Kids are out of school, and steamy days and nights make it ideal to vacation on the beach. Beach or resort wear gives you the opportunity to have fun, be creative, and dress outside the box. Colors should be bright — electric bright. There is no need to match anything in your closet. It’s a great time to use our creative license. Do not be afraid to be daring like student Victoria Mann, who said, “Summer is an opportunity to take chances and make a change. I like to try things I wouldn’t normally wear. For example like wearing 26 | VM Fall 2013

a tribal print pair of leggings with a bright hot pink colorful flowing shirt. I love trying new things; it makes me feel alive.”

FALL is my favorite time of year because cooler temperatures and lower humidity have a way of cleansing the air. Changes in the air lead to a change in our way of dressing. Colors become deeper, fabrics richer, and layers emerge. Even in our temperate Florida climate, temperatures drop enough for us to seek cover under beautiful textures and colors.

There are many ways to add splashes of color to your wardrobe in every season. Experiment with some of these: STYLISH HATS provide warmth and create

a fashion statement. One bonus is that they hide a bad hair day. Hats are an inexpensive way to add a splash of color — try one in red, pumpkin, or yellow. My favorites are the multi-colored, multitextured knit styles. Your many options include caps, beanies, fedoras, wide brim hats, and berets.

BOOTS are the most versatile of all the trends

and will do double duty by making a fashion statement while keeping you warm on those chilly evenings. Skinny jeans, tights, and leggings are tucked into boots. Purchase a pair of cowboy boots with hot pink and teal floral embroidery or a sleek solid turquoise or yellow bootie to update your look. Short boots as well as over-the-knee boots are popular for day or evening looks. Lindsay Nici, our Fashionista, shared, “Knee high boots are a big fashion trend. Everyone and anyone who is into ‘what is fashionable’ will be trying out this look. The nice thing with knee high boots is that you can wear them with just about anything. Wear them over a pair of jeans, over leggings, or with a skirt.”

SCARVES are a must-have in your closet and the most economical way to add a bright pop of color or bold graphic patterns. A lightweight silk scarf worn under a business jacket adds color and polish to an otherwise boring suit, finishing your look with style. Heavier scarves provide warmth around the neck on cool mornings or evening out with friends. Fluorescent colors will attract attention as well as bold black and white geometric prints.

WRAPS. For a one-size-fits-all fashion boost,

invest in a wrap. Keep one in your car for those times when the restaurant or movie theater is cooler than expected and one in the office to cover chilly shoulders or legs. Wraps can be worn over tank tops, turtle necks and even coats. Pashminas are popular wraps that come in a multitude of colors. Adding color to your wardrobe and keeping up with trends does not have to break the bank. All you need are a few key pieces that you can introduce to an otherwise neutral color scheme. A fun, colorful hat punches up last year’s dark blazer. Tall bright colored boots worn with thick colorful tights under a sweater dress is an office look that says “now.” An animal print faux fur scarf in unexpected shades such as orange and crème can be layered over a plain sweater or the popular jacket. Relax, get creative, and start to communicate with color.

WHAT TO WEAR when re-entering the workforce AUTHOR RO MARTINEZ PHOTOGRAPHY ANGELA MANN PHOTOGRAPHY {727.518.4977} HAIR AND MAKEUP MONIQUE MCLAUGHLIN {makeupandhairbymonique.com}

IN THIS ECONOMY IT IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVER TO MAKE A POSITIVE FIRST IMPRESSION. THAT IMPRESSION IS CREATED BEFORE YOU EVEN BEGIN TO SPEAK. THE IMAGE YOU DISPLAY MATTERS TO A POTENTIAL EMPLOYER ESPECIALLY IF YOUR POSITION INVOLVES HEAVY PUBLIC CONTACT WHERE YOU REPRESENT THE COMPANY AND YOU ARE THE FIRST PERSON CLIENTS OR CUSTOMERS SEE. This is doubly true if you work in sales or in a reception area. The competition when applying for a position is greater than ever. Attorneys, financial advisors or those in corporate positions are not immune because clients will judge you on your appearance. Unfair as this may be, it is a reality. For those of you who may have been out of the workforce for a while, the image you convey is especially important. Perhaps you returned to school to get your degree, your financial situation requires you to work, or you find yourself with free time on your hands as a result of grown children moving out. Your wardrobe can set you apart as someone who is dedicated with much potential. A corporate setting is more structured, allowing for less flexibility in dress. The required wardrobe is generally more costly and may take some time to build. Purchasing good quality pieces and learning to properly care for your garments will help them last. Whether your office is all business or business casual, you can shop at discount and department stores taking advantage of the after-season sales. Consignment stores and yard sales are also options that should not be dismissed. You do not need to spend your entire paycheck to look good. If you do not have a variety of suits for each day of the week, a few tops and accessories to mix and match will make the same suit look entirely different. 28 | VM Fall 2013

WARDROBE IDEAS FOR PROFESSIONALS IN THE CORPORATE WORLD: »» Pinstripe black, navy blue or charcoal grey skirt suit with one or two simple accessories.

»» Pant suit in a neutral color such as taupe or brown worn with a soft blouse to add a splash of color.

»» For men, two sport coats or sport coat and a suit, with a variety of slacks and dress shirts. Moms of grown children or seniors re-entering the workforce have it more difficult because you may have been out of the loop for several years. If this is the case, your working wardrobe may be outdated. You may have had a corporate position where suits were the norm and now you seek a part-time position where dress is more casual. Examine your wardrobe. Perhaps simple changes can make it possible for you to look presentable without having to invest in a new working wardrobe. See below for suggestion. If you can’t salvage your wardrobe because it no longer fits, recycle it by donating your wardrobe to a charity making it a tax write off. Giving it to family or friends who can benefit from it is another option, or you may decide to take it to a consignment shop where they can sell the garments, earning you extra $$.

WARDROBE IDEAS FOR OLDER MOMS OR SENIORS RETURNING TO THE WORKFORCE OR VOLUNTEERS: »» If you had skirt suits, wear the skirt with a lightweight sweater. Wear the jacket over pants and a cotton button-down shirt or simple tee.

»» Khaki pants with sweater sets and simple jewelry. »» Black tanks and stretchy black pants worn under colorful tops. Ideally, research the company before you go on your interview and find out what their dress code is. It’s best to err on the side of caution and dress conservatively. After the first day of work you can see if you need to make adjustments. This may also apply if you are a volunteer. Periodically evaluating your wardrobe can also be beneficial if you want to improve your image, put your best foot forward and be the best-dressed employee in your work place!

A Perfect Blend of Art and Fashion AUTHOR RO MARTINEZ {modelingatanyagebook.com} PHOTOGRAPHY ERNESTO GARCIA

St. Petersburg is richer because of the talent and creative energy resulting from the 5 day fusion of art and fashion, an event we have grown to love and anticipate. St. Pete Art and Fashion Week or SPAFW is a perfect blend of talented individuals coming together to entertain and inspire. Each artistic event prepared us for the grand finale; the Fashion Show Gala. Each year Dona Crowley and her committee work tirelessly to bring local talent to St. Pete. The gala opened with Carmen Brandy, the young performer who set the mood for the event. Eight designers unveiled their collections starting with Helen Gerro showing sexy hand painted corsets, to art deco inspired fashions by Fidel, beautiful bridal dresses and gowns by Jacka Designs, ending with gorgeous fashions by Lujeanik Designs. The audience enjoyed every aspect, including the talented Fred Astaire dancers.

ARTISTS “I love great fashion. My inspiration came from my faith, emotion and traveling experience. My style is abstract expression. I love the spectrum of color and pull vibrancy out by using a pop of red and yellow.” ~Provoke Art “I was searching for an outlet and a way to express myself. I started with a sketch then a full blown large mixed media art painting.” ~Jhone

DESIGNERS

“I am inspired by fabric. It is up to the designer to turn fabric into a garment. I design for sassy, fun, and sophisticated women of all ages. My favorite aspect of SPAFW is the excitement, photographers, music, and of course my collection on the runway!” ~Jacka Designs “I have always been a lover of Art Deco design. I lean toward black because of its simple sophistication. Fashion is fun and a way to make yourself unique. My collection is very glamorous with a touch of vintage.” ~Fidel

MODELS

“This is my first time walking for Jacka Designs during SPAFW, there is a lot of energy in the room and it is almost tangible. There is a melting pot of creativity and fashion is another form of art.” ~Sarah Freeman “This is my third year with SPAFW. Musicians, artists, models, and photographers come together in one place and every year new designers bring new creations; Dona Crowley puts together a high level event.” ~Stan Bryant

I enjoy connecting with models and designers back stage because of the exclusive time with them.” ~Leandro “This is my first time at SPAFW, I will definitely do it again. I like the creative aspect of everyone coming together to create.” ~Cris
