This issue of Vogue Fabrics Catalog will help you transition from summer into fall. For some of you, the summer heat will continue for a few more months, while for others the cooler Autumn air comes early. We have compiled collections to please natural fiber lovers as well as wash-andwear easy-care enthusiasts.

Let’s begin with this trio from the fashion division of Robert Kaufman. Hurricane Sunshine is a tightly woven poly-cotton pincord that has enough body to be worn as Capri pants or Bermuda shorts with a lightweight jacket/overshirt to match. It looks fabulous paired with Hurricane Garden, a floral cotton print with orange and persimmon blossoms, green leaves, blue hyacinth and yellow accents. Whip up a sweet summer shirt or shell in no time. For those of you who prefer 100% cotton, we tossed in Hurricane Amber to be a mid-weight woven option, much like the yellow pincord. It is tightly woven and sturdy, while still being soft to wear and versatile enough to be sewn into any type or garment.

If you are making a reversible jacket, put #01 and #03 as the two layers. Wow!

The next trio should be considered for a complete outfit because these fabrics just work perfectly together. Imagine a tunic or shirt made from Hurricane Blossoms, an a-line skirt from Hurricane Peridot and a jacket from Hurricane Rosa. This ensemble is perfect for going from heat to air conditioning while looking so well put-together.

Hurricane Collection Last year the Atlantic Basin was rocked by hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria. Still feeling the effects of these storms, our editorial staff thought we would dedicate this issue to tropical cyclones - from their development to our survival. Hurricane season in the United States runs from mid summer through fall, the same time line as the seasonal fabrics in this issue. We hope to provide information on how these storms form, why they are so destructive, and how you can prepare yourself if you are in the path of an approaching hurricane.

One of the most destructive events Mother Nature can unleash is the tropical cyclone. Known in Asia as typhoons, in the southern hemisphere as cyclones, here in North America we call these natural disasters hurricanes. Warm ocean waters are a breeding ground for thunderstorms. Most fizzle out quickly. But when a Low Pressure System rotates its way into one of these storms, organization occurs, and the clouds start swirling. Travelling hundreds of miles over open water, the thunderous beasts gain in strength and girth, some clocking sustained winds over 110 miles per hour, spanning hundreds of miles in diameter with a well defined area of calm in the center - the eye of the storm. A slow moving storm may take hours to pass over a city, slamming down rain and hail, uprooting trees, and destroying buildings. There is no human way to defeat these monster storms. They die down after reaching large land masses or move over colder water.

We riffed a little on the Patriotic red, white and blue theme. Chronicle Grapefruit is as refreshing to wear as its namesake is to eat.

Enjoy wearing this cotton stretch shirting anytime of year. We can see it being worn as a camp shirt, open over a shell made from Chronicle Geometric, a blouseweight polyester crepe print. If you choose to sew a flowing skirt instead, you’ll want to line it or wear a slip for modesty. Chronicle Navy is another stretch shirting, but this has just a tad more bite to it, so you can sew a golf skirt or a-line skirt in addition to any top you might create. p.6

Chronicle Collection There are not as many historical accounts of tropical cyclones as one might expect.

Storms weren’t often named, there were no meteorological societies recording weather patterns, and many cultures regarded these long duration events as a result of an angry deity. Fifteen hundred years ago in China a typhoon was recorded in a book by Shen Huai-yuan. Shen described a jufeng, or a “wind that comes in all four directions” lasting for several days. “Roosters and dogs are silent for three days...” prior to the storm’s arrival, a phenomenon that is also recorded in island cultures ahead of cyclones. In 13th century Japan, two typhoons saved the island from invasion by Kublai Khan’s Mongol fleets. The Zen Buddhist Samurai Warriors welcomed these kamikaze (divine winds) which sunk the invaders and also thwarted off any future attempted attacks from other forces...who would mess with divine intervention? Christopher Columbus is credited as the first European to have recorded a huracan. In 1502 off the island of Hispaniola, Columbus recognized the signs of a great storm, having heard the accounts from the local Taino tribe regarding great black winds of anger from their god Hurakan erupting over the ocean. Ignoring Columbus’ warnings of impending doom, a fleet bound for Spain embarked on a fatal voyage into the huracan. Ironically, only one of the dozen ships made it safely through to Spain - the tiniest of the fleet that was carrying Columbus’ tribute of gold to King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella.

This rayon challis print beautifully blends the grapefruit and navy colors in a flowing and soft cloth. Sew a shell from either of our grapefruit solids, then toss on a kimono style top made from Chronicle Abstract.

Loes Hinse #5005 “Skirt Trio”

“When the crickets, cicadas, toads and frogs disappear, hurricane for sure,” the saying goes in Puerto Rico. The more in-tune a culture was with the clouds, winds, and behavior of their animals, the better they were able to foresee the coming of a massive tropical cyclone. Whether they did anything to prepare, such as gather food and water or move inland we just don’t know. Thankfully, modern technology allows us to watch these storms from inception. Professionals look at the water temperatures, barometric pressure and instability of the air. The first alert comes when a system is designated a Tropical Depression with wind speed less than 39 MPH (63 kph). From then, if the storm continues to develop, it becomes a Tropical Storm with wind speeds up to 73 MPH (118 kph), then Hurricane with wind speeds up to 110 MPH (177 kph). If winds get above that level, the storm is designated a Major Hurricane. Once a storm forms and organizes into a cyclone with a well defined eye, meteorological duties turn to determining the path the storm will take and alerting people for evacuations.

Here in the States we look for watches and warnings put out by the National Hurricane Center at NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) . Using prediction models from several computer programs, the NHC produces a forecast cone that “...contains the probable path of the storm center but does not show the size of the storm. Hazardous conditions can occur outside of the cone.” Also referred to as the cone of uncertainty, this is merely a predictor of a probable path the storm might take, and it is updated daily as new information becomes available. The storms are steered by the “winds aloft”, and these are effected by barometric pressure and temperatures coming from warm waters and cold fronts. A shift in one has a domino effect in the intensity, size and path of the storm.

You will want to sew a top, a dress, or a flowing skirt from this lightweight and slightly crinkled rayon. The colors of the blossoms will surely match several garments you already own as well, as these colors include aqua, yellow, coral, raspberry, peridot and cream all on a black base.

For a perfect bottom-weight we proffer Prediction Aqua, a stable Ponte di Roma double knit. This particular fabric has a very firm construction, so it would be ideal for a sheath dress, straight skirt, slacks or jacket.

Prediction Butterflies is a white, double woven cotton gauze with turquoise/navy and cream/tan butterflies tossed about. We envision it being sewn into a top or tunic with contrast neckline and hem made from Prediction Embrace, a super soft, double woven cotton gauze.

The blend of lavender, magenta, aqua, persimmon with cream and black is delightful on this blouseweight polyester pebble crepe we call Ingredients Abstract. This easycare washable textile is wrinkle resistant and perfect for weekend get-aways. You’ll notice from our image of this fabric, there is a subtle “stripe” to the design, so choosing a pattern that has fewer seams (like Loes Hinse #1003 Cap Sleeve) will showcase this best.

Ingredients Collection What ingredients are needed to cook up a tropical cyclone? Begin with a base of warm, moist air over warm ocean waters near the equator and allow to percolate.

As this simmers and the warm air rises, a swirling area of low pressure is left below. Add new air from surrounding warm areas and stir the proverbial pot.

Continue this process until large clouds have formed from the rising warm air and evaporating water being cooled in the upper atmosphere. Continue stirring over equatorial heat. North of the equator, stir in a counterclockwise motion, but go clockwise if south of the equator. Increase speed until a well defined center emerges. This “eye of the storm” will be calmer and clearer as high pressure from the surrounding mixture rises and then dips down into the center where there is a very low pressure. Adjust the intensity of your hurricane by increasing the wind speed. Intenisty levels range from mild at a Category 1 to major destruction at Category 5 on the Saffir-Simpson scale. Your hurricane is done cooking when the storm is removed from the heat source of warm, moist air. This occurs when the storm travels over large masses of land or moves over colder waters.

At first glance #24 & #26 look like contemporary cotton woven prints, don’t they? But they are super soft 100% Cotton knits! These lightweight double knits have a beautiful hand and nice body. They would be fun to wear as tops, and also as pajamas! The pink and blue in Moniker Alpha and Moniker Beta match the pink and blue cotton solids in this collection for easy adaptation into any ensemble. Another wonderful Oxford cloth is Moniker Rosa. If you are unfamiliar with Oxford cloth, it is a slightly thicker shirting, more durable, originally woven for the workforce as opposed to the boardroom. This pink option is very wide at 651/2”!

Moniker Blanca is a deliciously soft combed cotton shirting. It has great body, is tightly woven and is fairly thick so the opacity is wonderful. If you have an embroidery machine you are probably already planning how you’ll embellish it! Get extra so you can dye it up in several colors.

Here’s another great jacket option - Moniker Weave. Deep indigo fibers are woven in a crisscross pattern on a navy cotton base. This tempting textile is lightweight enough to wear as a shirt, and it would look fantastic as a man’s shirt with cuffs and collar lined with the checks in #32 (think of the higher end shirts being made for men these days). p. 23

Today we know tropical cyclones from their infamous names: Andrew, Katrina, Sandy, Harvey, Maria, and lists go on. Centuries ago, there was no organized list for naming storms. The most devastating events were named for gods or the cities that were destroyed. As meteorology developed, various attempts at naming storms were created and fizzled out. In the southern hemisphere, male names had been in use since 1900, and in the northern hemisphere a list of female names was created around the time the first weather satellite was launched into orbit in 1960. There are separate lists for each storm area of the world, from Asia to Australia, to the Atlantic Basin and the North Pacific storms that effect the United States. Now hurricane lists alternate male and female names in alphabetical order, and are repeated every six years. When a storm proves to be exceptionally devastating, its name is retired and replaced with a new name.

During particularly active seasons, the full list may be used, and then the Greek Alphabet is employed to continue the identifications. At the time of this printing, Hurricane Beryl had been downgraded to a Tropical Storm as it approached the Lesser Antilles, and Tropical Storm Chris was expected to develop into a hurricane and move north and east off the Atlantic Coast of the United States.

With visual assistance from satellite imagery, plus data collected by weather instruments, it has been determined that tropical cyclones can be dissected into distinct parts with various characteristics. Spiral rainbands swirl around from the outer edge towards the center of the storm.

Warm waters below and cold air aloft produce cumulonimbus clouds that tower into the skies. The higher the cloud, the more likely large hail will be produced as the water vapor cools and gets bounced around before becoming too dense to stay airborn. When a hurricane makes landfall, the winds and rains of the right front quadrant (the section of storm at the top and front that batters the land first) are strongest since it has most recently been over the water that fuels it. Water is pushed onto land in storm surges that flood streets and erode beaches. As these warm winds hit land and mix with cooler air, the large cyclone spawns smaller rotations - tornadoes - which can pack sustained wind speeds nearly double that of the hurricane, causing further destruction inland.

We have mentioned already the eye of the storm, a well defined center devoid of clouds and strong wind. This calm epicenter spans 10-30 miles across. When reading barometric pressure, the closer the isobars are on a wind map, the stronger the winds rage along the eye wall, and the eye wall does have the strongest winds of the storm with the tightest rotation of the storm. As the eye passes over a city, the inhabitants will first experience the worst of the storm, then a period of peace and sunshine before the back end of the eye wall hits with fury.

Now we start looking towards the fall colors, while keeping the fabrics light. Wear these when the skies darken but the temperatures are still a bit warm. Our first two selections are rayon batiks that were made as sisters. We implore you to find a great piece work pattern, or an ensemble in which you can wear these together. Impact Bark is an all-over mottled brown with hints of rust and subtle patina, while Impact Vine has the same base colors as the bark with the added design element of tiny leaves on a vine in camel, patina and rust. These rayons are lightweight with beautiful drape, so choose patterns that will flow.

Impact Camel has a soft, sueded feel without the nap element of a true suede. This rayon twill is a perfect bottom-weight option to wear as slacks, skirts or a jacket with the preceding rayon batiks, or pair with the upcoming knit print #42.

Impact Blossom has a sort of sueded knit feel to it, and this ITY print is sure to blend into your wardrobe with its neutral camel, cream, milk chocolate and dark espresso colors. It coordinates perfectly with both of our rayon solids in this collection.

Impact Collection Sewing Workshop “MixIt Top”

Devestating hurricanes can leave behind a path of death and destruction. The deadliest aspect of a hurricane is the flooding it can produce. Storm surges push tons of water onto land, washing away roads, cars, bridges, homes. Sustained high winds rip roofs off buildings and propel debris for miles. Tornadoes spun from the swirling rainbands cause brief moments of destruction, with higher wind speeds ripping homes from their foundations and uprooting trees. Last year Hurricane Harvey broke the US rainfall record when it dumped over 50 inches of rain in Cedar Bayou, Texas, just outside of Houston.

Streets were flooded for miles, making escape impossible. Damage reports from this storm alone top $125 billion. Loss of life, mostly from drowning in floodwaters, was 82. Although the dollar amount for damage is tied with Katrina, in 2005 Katrina claimed a death toll over 1200 souls. Harvey’s relatively lower loss of life was attributable to earlier evacuation notices, or people stockpiling plenty of food and water to ride out the storm at home. Puerto Rico is still recovering from the devastating impact of Maria, which knocked power out across the entire island last year and destroyed village after village. The US Postal Service statistics show 6.6K people requested changes of address from Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands after Maria, and Florida’s Department of Education reports new enrollment of 11.5K Puerto Rican students.

Our second rayon bottom-weight is Impact Chocolate, a milk chocolate if you will. Choose patterns that allow the languid appearance of this weave to come through. Many of the styles from Loes Hinse are ideal, as well as some options from Cutting Line Designs and Saf-T-Pockets. As a blouse or wrap dress to wear with the rayon gabardine we recommend Impact Ditzy, a midnight navy base topped with tiny splatters of milk chocolate, aubergine, claret and buttercream. This polyester print fabric has a feminine fluidity with body to boot.

Red flag warnings at beaches mean danger, but there’s nothing dangerous in this red collection. Aircrew Leaves features a large print of red flowers with camel and off-white leaves surrounded by black. Wear this stretch woven as capris, a skirt, a jacket or vest.

Aircrew Cardinal is a cotton rich Ponte di Roma double knit, so it has a thick body and soft hand. This can stand alone as a dress, or wear it as a top under your stretch twill jacket, or as a skirt to coordinate with a blouse of the next print. p. 31

Another great rayon print is Aircrew Gems, with small motifs that remind us of turquoise and ruby jewels. This lightweight, slightly crinkled woven is begging to be worn as a tunic or skirt, as we show here. Aircrew Turquoise, a bright polyester semi-sheer double crepe georgette, would make a wonderful peasant style top, with the gathered, elasticized neckline worn off the shoulder. Aircrew Collection In 1943, on a bet from a fellow airman at Houston’s Bryan Field, Col. Joseph Duckworth, accompanied by navigator Lt. Ralph O’Hair flew a single engine AT-6 into the eye of a Category 1 hurricane. Upon their safe return, Col Duckworth ventured again into the storm, this time taking flight with the base’s weather officer, Lt. William Jones-Burdick. These wartime flights proved two things: the aircraft were well constructed and flights into storms were possible. In 1946 the

flyboys who performed these reconnaissance flights were dubbed “Hurricane Hunters.” Flights continue, crewed by members of the US Air Force and by NOAA. They fly into the eyewall or above and around the storms, up to 10,000 feet above earth. Missions can last up to 11 hours and cover up to 3500 miles. Flights also boast a full complement of staff, between 6-15 aircrew. NOAA has reported a 30% increase in forecast accuracy since collecting data from these flights.

Readiness Collection The dramatic difference in loss of life between Katrina and Harvey illustrates how proper preparation can save lives, if not property. We can see storms brewing over waters thousands of miles away, so paying attention to weather forecasts is a good place to start. Also, know how well your home can withstand sustained winds of one of these storms. People often will board up their windows, which helps protect from the winds, but debris can still break through the boards, causing destruction inside the home. Inevitably, people who decide

to ride out the storm all go to the store for supplies at the same time, encountering large crowds and empty shelves. Alternatively, people who leave seem to wait until the Evacuation order is issued, causing major traffic jams on highways and empty pumps at gas stations. There are also those people who wait until the storm arrives to leave, wanting to avoid the traffic or panicking at the last minute. These people risk encountering flash floods and get trapped, or worse, get washed away.

Early action saves lives. Take a trip, leave early and stay safe.

Our final collection begins with a black stretch cotton poplin adorned with fuchsia scroll embroidery. We are sure you will want to sew a jacket, dress or skirt from Readiness Scrolls.

You should also consider sewing the scrolls into a vest to wear over a top or dress sewn from Readiness Fuchsia, another nylon/rayon Ponte di Roma double knit.
