Quick show of hands....how many of you will be watching the Super Bowl on Sunday, February 9? Keep your hands up if you will be drinking beer. Well, you won’t be alone. Hoppy suds are part of the NFL zeitgeist, generating roughly $1.3 Billion in sales nationwide for bars, tailgating, and watch parties, which translates to 325.5 million gallons of beer consumed on Super Bowl Sunday. Advertisers pay up to $7 million per 30-second ad to whet our appetites for brewskis. But how much do you really know about beer? Get ready for some cool info you can share while enjoying a cold one on gameday. Humans have been fermenting things for 12,000 years, since the dawn of cereal agriculture. Archaeologists have found mead-like residue in pottery from 9000 years ago in Jiahu, China. But the Sumerians of Mesopotamia get credit for creating beer, and their goddess Ninkasi was a master brewer. The “Hymn to Ninkasi,” a 3800-year-old ode inscribed on a clay tablet, gives specific directions for brewing beer. Around that same time in Babylonia came the Code of Hammurabi, a list of laws and regulations carved onto a 7-foot-tall basalt pillar. In part, it regulated innkeepers regarding fair trade (barter of beer for supplies), and banned priestesses from drinking with commoners, most violations were punishable by drowning. Babylonians considered beer a person’s right, rationing a gallon a day to priests, and two gallons to laborers. It was also safer to drink than water from many rivers, so it was a favorite of ancient Egyptians along the Nile, and they flavored it with dates, mandrake, and olive oil. But the game-changer for beer came in 1158 CE when Benedictine abbess and polymath Hildegaard von Bingen wrote Physica, a comprehensive book on herbology, the medicine of the day. She discovered that adding hops to the brewing process made beer last longer using fewer grains. With the high grain taxes and high consumption rates, this discovery spread quickly through Germany and Bavaria, yielding greater production at lower costs. That’s reason enough for her to be sainted, right?

When Brew Romance arrived at our warehouse, we snatched all we could for the catalog. Sophisticated, elegant, classic crepe georgette weave - but in rayon! This was the last yardage available from a famous apparel manufacturer when they completed sewing for the season. One designer’s deadstock is another sewist’s treasure, right? We envision this beauty being worn as a classic button-down, collared, tunic-length blouse over a silk charmeuse shell. Complete the ensemble with slacks tailored from Brew Pinstripe, a 100% worsted wool suiting for men and women. As a special perk to our subscribers, we are offering this beautiful woolen for a very low price.

When your skin is dry and cracked in the winter, it’s best to wear something soft and soothing. The next two fabrics fit that bill, and they look fabulous together. Our next trio is sure to be a winner. Lager Polar is another water-repellent sweatshirt fleece from Polartec. Not only is this wonderful for comfort wear, but you can also sew up a hat and mittens to match your new zip-front jacket. Check out the many Great Copy Patterns on our site for inspiration. The color echos the undertones of Lager Frenzy, a textured knit from designer Andria Lieu. We have featured similar knits in previous catalogs, so we opted to skip the swatching and reserve the limited yardage for you. Its reverse features a very muted black tone-on-tone animal spot design, so it’s ok to let the reverse show. Playing off the deep plum of the knit, we chose Lager Regal stretchwoven brushed micro-twill as an option for lightweight slacks, shorts, or skirts.

Lager Collection

Beer can be broken down into two groups...not “tastes great” vs “less filling,” but nice try. We mean ales vs lagers. Ale is quick to make, fermenting at room temperature with a frothy, yeasted foam working its magic at the top of the liquid. Like making sourdough bread, which uses a starter dough that provides yeast harvested naturally through the air, early ale brewers would scoop the foam (the yeasty part) off the top of the brew at the end of fermentation and use that in the next batch. This kept the ale in continual production, too. Ale predates lager by several centuries. In 15th-century Bohemia, brewers began storing beer in caves to keep it cool. The fermentation process slowed from the colder temps and the yeast settled to the bottom of the barrel where it worked its magic in a slightly different, more complex way. Thus was born the more robust lager, from the German word lagern - “to store.” They both use the same components, but the process differed due to the temperature and how that affected the yeast. Today, brewers can purchase the correct yeast, and skip the de-foaming. If you plan on brewing at home, you will surely be making a form of ale, since it takes less time, and ferments at ambient temperatures. It’s easy to buy beer brewing kits online that come with the bare necessities of malt (sugar), hops, water, grains, and yeast, often pre-mixed in a packet, but it’s fun to experiment with seasonal flavors, like citrus, floral notes, fruits, and spices. To brew at home, a kit will cost around $50 for the ingredients and a fermenting container, but bottles and stock pots are generally sold separately. It takes roughly six weeks to brew a good ale at home, and kits can produce from one to five gallons, depending which you choose.

Hops Collection

Today, the defining ingredient in all beer is hops, thanks to Saint Hildegaard. In the 12th century, she wrote about its preservative nature. If you aren’t familiar with hops, it’s a vigorous vining plant (from the Anglo-Saxon hoppan meaning “to climb”), which Pliny the Elder referred to as willow wolf, because its “...winding, choking growth is as destructive to the willow as a wolf is to sheep.” For centuries, the intensely strong vine was used in rope making, but Saint Hildegaard used the flower, which looks similar to a green pinecone. She wasn’t the first to notice the preservative effect of hops. That credit goes to Yuhanna ibin Masawaih, a PersianChristian doctor who wrote about the healing (antibacterial) properties of hops and their ability to aid in sleep and digestion. In beer production, hops had the added benefit of reducing bitterness while balancing out the sweetness of the malt, making brews more flavorful, complex, and easier to drink. From the two main groups, ale and lager, we get subgroups, like IPA, Imperial Stout, and Pilsner. Pilsner was first brewed in 1842 in Plzeň, Czech Republic by Josef Groll using the Saaz variety of hops. It produced a lager with a “crisp, spicy flavor” yet “light on the palate” and became very popular. Today, any pilsner must contain only the Saaz hops, including Heineken, Budweiser, and Stella Artois. There are hundreds of varieties of hops, each bringing their unique flavor profile.

How to Care For Your Fabrics

The care instructions in this catalog are a conservative path, but not an absolute. There is no one size fits all for fabric care because of all the variables, such as hard versus soft water, well and septic versus municipal water, washers with and without a center aggitator, dryers that have a no-heat option, etc.

One supplier would have everyone dry clean every fabric, but for many of you this is not feasable.

Here are some general guides. You can always use your swatch to test how a fabric will react to washing and drying. Test wash the way you plan to wash your finished garments - this will remove any sizing and shrinkage prior to cutting/sewing.

Pro-Tip: Set your washer for an extra long spin cycle to remove excess water, then toss in the dryer on low heat for 5 minutes before hanging or laying flat. This minimizes wrinkles, and helps fibers last longer.

Prior to Hildegaard’s hopped-up claims, brewers needed to use a lot more grain to produce a greater alcohol content to keep the ale from going bad too soon. Rye, wheat, and barley were the most common grains used in making both ale and bread and were grown all over Europe commercially plus on family farms. With high grain production and usage came their equally high governmental or feudal taxes. Saint Hildegaard’s hoppy discovery reduced the amount of grain needed to produce a finer, longer-lasting ale, which also reduced the amount brewers paid in taxes. Huzzah! Now, if you are wondering why a polymath abbess was brewing in the first place, she wasn’t out of place in doing so. When Christianity spread into Europe, monks and nuns got into brewing. Beer is made with the same ingredients as bread, just manifesting in a liquid state. They saw it as a nutritional supplement and even enjoyed the beverage on religious fasting days, providing them a bread-like sustenance without actually eating. The next time you are in the liquor store, check out how many beers have labels with smiling monks holding small kegs….it’s a thing…. For a few centuries, many rulers gave brewing monopolies to monasteries as a way to raise revenue for the church. In 725, the Weihenstephaner monastery was founded in Weltenburg on the Danube. They have documentation from 768 regarding a nearby hops garden that made a 10% tithe of hops for monastic brewing. In 1040, Abbot Arnold obtained a license to brew and sell beer commercially. Through a thousand years filled with wars and secularization, the Weihenstephaner Monastery not only continues to produce beer but it is also known as the Bavarian State Brewery Weihenstephan and serves as a world leader in agriculture and brewing technologies.

Monk Rosa, a dark coral, supple, and lightweight Ponte, is very similar to the Sophia knits mentioned in the FitNice videos. We give this a five-star rating for sewability and wearability. It is light enough to wear as a top and substantive enough to wear as a dress.

Take a look at Monk Steel, an extra-wide, all-way stretch rayon jersey in icy blue. See how perfectly the color picks up the darker gray-blue tones in Monk Petals polyester crepe floral print?

Sew a shell or maxi dress from the knit, then top it with a button-down floral tunic crafted from Monk Petals for a wonderfully Bohemian look. This lightweight poly crepe print has drape and light opacity. We chose Monk Flash rayon challis as an accent piece for the floral because it pulls out the darker coral undertones. Sew a classic challis top and add a floral neck scarf with a rolled hem. If you love the feel and price of the challis, check out the many other colors we have on our website.

Ale Collection

In 1516 Bavaria, a law was adopted that affected German states and the Holy Roman Empire - the Reinheitsgebot. It set the market value for beer, but more importantly, it limited the ingredients to just barley, hops, and water. This kept brewers out of competition with bakers who needed wheat and rye to feed the populace. You may be asking, “What about yeast?” We should mention that, before the 19th century, people didn’t understand what yeast was. In bread-making and beer production, yeast naturally occurred as part of the fermentation process. Historically, baking referred to leavening when dough sat long enough to rise. Bakers and brewers would take part of the dough, or the foam and sediment from the brew, to jump-start the next batch, otherwise, the bread didn’t rise and the brew didn’t come out quite right. It wasn’t until Louis Pasteur isolated yeast through a microscope that we came to understand yeast as, according to Red Star yeast producers, humankind’s “oldest industrial microorganism.” The Reinheitsgebot has been replaced by the Provisional German Beer Law which allows wheat malt and cane sugar, and bans unmalted barley. But, many proud brewers around the world will market their beer as compliant to the Reinheitsgebot (with the now allowable addition of brewers yeast), including all beers sold at the famous Munich Oktoberfest celebrations.

This ribbed knit brings a pop of color with the golden background while blending with the green of Ale Duffle as well as the brown of our next fabric.

Although Ale Cocoa is technically a cotton sateen, the sheen is so dull it is easy to mistake it for a brushed cotton. Choose this all-natural woven for tailoring slacks, walking shorts, upscale cargo pants, and summer jackets. The color is a perfect coordinate to the accent colors in Ale Impression, a beautiful rayon challis floral print. Like a masterful painting, there are distinct floral notes on the surface and blended floral undertones as the background.

Rounding out this collection is Ale Avocado, the second sueded scuba knit of this catalog. It’s the ideal choice for a spring jacket to wear with the preceding two fabrics. You can also sew it into a bodycon dress to wear with a dramatic floral challis scarf. Use nap layout.

Made in France for Andria Lieu, this knit gradually changes from animal spots to an all-over mingle, before abruptly reverting to the animal spots. With a 34” repeat, you can cut the mingle as a border to edge your sleeves and hem. This is also a fun option for a sweater dress.

Stout Collection

Heat and long periods of storage cause beer to go bad, and early on they’d go flat and spoil in a month. According to legend, Russian Tzar, Peter the Great, visited England and enjoyed a dark lager. He wanted to take some home, but the drink was skunky by the time it arrived. Increasing the alcohol content and doubling the amount of hops extended the viability and drinkability of the brew, ultimately making exporting a commercial option. In 18th Century England, Anchor Brewery was famous for their dark porter, an ale made with roasted barley that provides a deep brown appearance and complex taste profile, like Guinness Beer. There is some evidence of Catherine the Great being sent Anchor’s Porter as a gift. The special recipe for her shipment increased the alcohol content and doubled the hops to ensure good drinkability after the long voyage. She became a fan, but the name Porter fell out of favor, being replaced by Imperial Stout, which sounds more fit for a Tzarina. The British juggernaut East India Trading Company (EIC) was the chief supplier of goods between Britain and India. British soldiers stationed on the Indian subcontinent were desperate for a taste of home, and regularly received shipments of cheese, wine, and ham. The EIC doubled the hops in ale for transport and gave rise to the India Pale Ale. No respectable bar in America today will go without an IPA or two on tap. In 1991, Guinness Beer won the Queen’s Award for Technology, beating out the creation of something called the internet. The clever brewers created a tiny ball-like widget for the inside of their cans. When you pop the top of the can, the widget breaks open, releasing a small mix of beer and nitrogen that, remarkably, recreates the famous extra foamy head of a draft Guinness. Hopefully, you have a new-found appreciation for some of the quirky points of beer and can use these nuggets of knowledge as a conversation starter the next time you pop open a cold one.
