Winter/Holi day 2024

Geo Collection

There’s a magical land skimming the outer rim of the arctic circle, frozen under mighty glaciers, heated from below by active volcanos, alive with percolating geysers, where the northern winter sky forsakes the sun and ethereally illuminates with dancing lights. This is the Land of Fire and Ice. This is Iceland. Roughly the size of Kentucky, only 20% of this icy volcanic island is populated. The island sits atop the Mid-Atlantic Ridge-a 10,000-mile-long mountain range nearly completely engulfed by the ocean. On the rim of Thingveller Lake lies Silfra Tectonic Fissure, a divide between the North Atlantic and Eurasian tectonic plates. Scuba divers braving the icy waters can touch both continental plates at the narrow part of the fissure at the same time. Visitors to the Reykjanes Peninsula, a land scarred by lava, traverse the fifty-foot Leif Erikson Bridge spanning this same continental divide, each side marked with a sign welcoming travelers to Europe or North America. At the center of the bridge—Midlina--over the deep crevasse sits a plaque reading “Miðlína, In the footsteps of the gods.” The tectonic plates move apart at the rate of an inch per year (the same rate as fingernail growth), causing more than 200 earthquakes annually. Glaciers cover 11% of the land, hiding 60% of the volcanoes. As the glaciers retreat, volcanoes erupt, and tectonic plates shift, the lands are left with breathtaking waterfalls, superheated hot springs, and spewing geysers. The very word geyser comes from the Icelandic geysir meaning “gush.”

No design speaks more to the winter holiday season than a great plaid. Inspired by the Royal Stewart Black tartan, this lightweight rayon challis won’t weigh you down when made into a traditional kilt. Geo Tartan can also be worn lined as a dress, unlined as a tunic or blouse, and draped across your shoulders as a spectacular scarf. In this catalog, we paired it with red and black, but check out VF236-35 Valor Temptress for a perfect green low-luster stretch satin.

Geo Scarlet is ready for the holiday party season. This viscose-rich double-jersey has a firm hand, making it an ideal choice for constructed garments, such as princess-seamed dresses and tops, knit jackets, skirts, and pants.

In this catalog, we feature three stretch-woven gabardine fabrics from our retail store’s Felix Collection. Geo Basalt’s soft touch, rich black color, and medium body give this beauty a place in your wardrobe as suiting-separates and an essential black dress.

Take a walk on the Geo Wildcat side with this black and red textured knit from fashion designer Andria Lieu. Although it has all-way stretch, the majority of the stretch runs lengthwise. If you choose to cut your pattern across the grain (laying your pattern from selvage to selvage) you will most likely need less yardage than cutting the traditional way. This is how manufacturers keep their production costs down. Don’t let the name fool you, the design incorporates leopard spots, zabra stripes, and snakeskin.

Whip up a cute red knit dress and trim the cuffs, neck, and hem with Geo Lava, a black panne velour. Oh, it’s not just an accent piece. This fabric makes a wonderful option for plush winter tops and dresses.

To keep you warm and stylish, wrap yourself in Geo Comfy, a fleece-backed yarn-dyed sweater knit. Sew this into a cardi, wrap jacket, long vest, or classic hoodie. Spoiler alert: VF246-11 is the same fabric in denim blue. Make some special gifts this season to give to friends and family.

Astro Collection

Nestled near the Arctic Circle, Iceland is plunged into long winter nights and joyous never-ending summer days as the earth rotates on its axis. Tall mountains surround the town of Isafjöður in the Westfjords. Two months a year, rays of sunlight are blocked, plunging Isafjöður into total darkness. In spring, when the sun reappears, the townspeople celebrate with a day of jubilation. Reykjavik, the capital city located in the southwest, sees as little as four hours of daylight in December, compared to June’s 21 hours of daylight, affectionately called the Midnight Sun. Many businesses take advantage of this heavenly gift by staying open late, or 24 hours, including Akureyri Golf Club, host of the Arctic Open international golf tournament. Tee times range from 4:00pm to 12:50am. Dress warmly, as summer temps average in the 50s in June, which is not much warmer than the December average temps in the 30s. Runners might enjoy the June 19 Midnaeturhlaup, or Midnight Run. Choose from a 5k, 10k, and half marathon. The 5k will only set you back 3700 Krona (approx $27.25 US). From September through April, the island experiences increased tourism for the Aurora Borealis - the Northern Lights. Electrical discharges from solar flares collide with our atmosphere, causing spectacular colors to dance across the night sky. Solar activity peaks every 11 years, with the next peak occurring now through March 2026.

When Energy Geo came to our warehouse, we knew we had to feature it in the catalog. This visually dynamic ITY knit print begs to be sewn into a stunning dress, avant-garde leggings, and knit tunic.

As sewists, it is rewarding to create garments that look like the high-end designer fashions, while spending a fraction of their ticket price. This can best be achieved when you have access to magnificent fabrics, like Energy Elegance, a medium-weight double-jersey knit with excellent drape and body, made by Telio, that we purchased as deadstock from a New York designer. Wear it as a dress with heels and good jewelry for a special occasion, or transform it into a sophisticated cardi and knit slacks.

We found the perfect color match to complement the burgundy knit. Energy Crevasse (page 10) textured knit comes to us from Andria Lieu. We are sure you will love this, so we opted not to swatch it for everyone in order to conserve yardage to fill your orders. This light to medium weight, all-way stretch knit has a soft hand and a lovely drape, making it an ideal choice for sewing knit tops, sweater sets, dresses, and skirts.

Energy Collection

Nearly 99% of Iceland’s energy is renewable. They have harnessed geothermal energy from the volcanic steam and hydropower from the rushing rivers. Islanders have over 100 words for wind, yet they have barely begun to harness wind power. Using the earth’s natural heating system is not a new concept for Icelanders. Nearly 1000 years ago, Snorri Sturlusson built a 15’ stone and basalt pool in his backyard and tapped into the steam heat from the volcanic fissure below his property. This pool was recently renovated and is on display as a point of Icelandic pride. Eighty percent of the island’s population lives in cities, where the energy centers are most efficient. Urban homes are nearly exclusively condos or apartments, as opposed to houses. These buildings stand three to five stories tall and are made from concrete to prevent devastating collapses during earthquakes and high winds. Dwellings are smaller than those in the USA, making them more efficient to heat. Smaller spaces mean smaller appliances. Dishwashers, refrigerators, and washer/dryer units are half the size of those we are used to and use less energy to run. The wooden and stone floors are heated, eliminating the need for carpeting. It is customary to remove one’s shoes upon entering the home to keep the dirt, snow, mud, and yuck from being tracked inside. According to Scientific American, Icelanders have only tapped into about 15% of the geothermal energy available to them. There are also numerous dams harnessing the power of water around the country. It is no wonder that when countries like Germany and China want to expand their use of renewable energy, they reach out to Iceland for help. The Icelandic government is working to make the entire island nation carbon neutral by 2040, setting the global standard.

Twelve hundred years ago, Vikings landed on this incredible, uninhabited island and set up camp. Legend says they named this beautiful island Iceland while calling the desolate island to the east Greenland to deter others from coming. Unlike the Romantic languages, which have changed greatly over the past millennia, today’s Icelanders speak and read the same language as the original settlers. Today, 98% of Icelandic adults speak and read their native language, plus Danish and English, with equal proficiency. Fewer than 400,000 people live in Iceland (that’s about 10% of the population of Chicago), and natives all descend from a single-family tree. The Icelandic genealogy website Islendingabok.is provides an app for people to see how closely related they are, which comes in very handy on the dating scene. Bump technology allows app users to bump their phones together to see how closely related they are, leading to the slogan, “Bump the app before you bump in bed”. When starting a family, there are roughly 3000 approved first names from which to choose, and last names would be a combination of either the mother’s or father’s first name with the addition of -dóttir or -son. Former Olympic swimmer turned actress Ragga Ragnars was born Ragnheiður Ragnarsdóttirer. You may know her as Gunnhild from the TV series Vikings. The islanders are peaceful and polite. Very few police carry weapons because there is relatively little crime, and there are no standing armed forces except the Coast Guard, a unique set-up for a NATO country. To this day, nearly a third of Icelanders believe in “hidden people” like elves and trolls. December is not filled with the promise of Father Christmas but with the fear of a family of trolls, called the 13 Yule Lads. They are said to descend from the mountains to menace the sheep, lick all the pans and bowls, suckle the cows, peep through the windows, and steal the food and candles. The Yule Lads were nothing compared to their child-eating giantess of a mother, Gryla. So horrifying were the stories that a law was enacted in 1746 banning parents from tormenting their children with these tales.

How to Care For Your Fabrics

The care instructions in this catalog are a conservative path, but not an absolute. There is no one size fits all for fabric care because of all the variables, such as hard versus soft water, well and septic versus municipal water, washers with and without a center aggitator, dryers that have a no-heat option, etc.

One supplier would have everyone dry clean every fabric, but for many of you this is not feasable.

Here are some general guides. You can always use your swatch to test how a fabric will react to washing and drying. Test wash the way you plan to wash your finished garments - this will remove any sizing and shrinkage prior to cutting/sewing.

Pro-Tip: Set your washer for an extra long spin cycle to remove excess water, then toss in the dryer on low heat for 5 minutes before hanging or laying flat. This minimizes wrinkles, and helps fibers last longer.

Changing tack, craft a comfortable knit top from Kin Hunter, a supple and lightweight Ponte like the famed Sophia Knit that Judy Kessinger loves to use.

Kin Hipster yarn-dyed cotton plaid flannel in dark green and navy was surely inspired by the Black Watch tartan. This color combo will never go out of style, and who doesn’t love tossing on a roomy plaid flannel overshirt to take the chill off on cold winter days?

We debated whether to use this next fabric as the end of the Kin Collection or begin the next. Either way, Kin Imposter is a must-have for all of you Scuba knit lovers. It features a navy suede face on a black scuba knit. Order early - yardage is very limited on this spectacular fabric!

Tour Collection

More revenue is generated annually from whalewatching tours than from commercial whaling and scientific whale hunts combined. Tourism provides 10% of the Icelandic GDP, attracting over 2,000,000 people a year (nearly six times its population). Most tourists stay in a city and take day trips to view the natural wonders (waterfalls, volcanoes, hot springs, geysers, glaciers, tectonic plates), wildlife (polar bears, puffins, whales, and thousands of sea birds), and enjoy the seasonal offerings (Midnight Sun, Northern Lights). Tourists are encouraged to leave behind their cute heels and dresses in favor of sturdy and warm hiking boots and thermal coats. Many tours of the natural wonders involve a bit of hiking in rugged terrain, areas no doubt guarded by elves and trolls. Unfortunately, climate change is wreaking havoc on the glaciers. Iceland is losing three feet of ice per year, and most will be gone within the next 250 years. When the glaciers melt, the rivers may run dry, and the hydraulic power plants will fail. Things Iceland doesn’t have: mosquitos and equestrian diversity. Seriously, no mosquitos. Regarding the horses, Vikings brought Nordic horses and ponies when they colonized the island in the 9th and 10th centuries, from which all current horses in Iceland descend. They are protected by a parliamentary law enacted in the year 982 banning the importation of horses. No other breeds are allowed into the country, and if a horse leaves the island, it can never return.

Kicking off our next collection is Tour , a reversible navy and brown sweater knit with fringed sides. We did not swatch this color because of limited yardage, but we do feature it in black and grey as the last fabric so you can feel how lovely this is. We love getting designer deadstock from Andria Lieu, and this Spanish-milled fabrication is exceptional. Order 1 yard for a small shall, or stitch two 1-yard cuts together at one selvage to create a dramatic wrap.

Tour St. Navy mottled stretch pinwale corduroy should be sewn into a skirt and slacks as wardrobe basics. Seriously, this is a no-brainer. We all need those staples that mix and match with our blouses and tops.

This easy addition of the ribbon-lace mesh elevates the garment from a simple dress to eveningwear. It can also become office attire when tossed over a shell made from one of the solids and paired with your stretch corduroy slacks.

Tour Temptress is a low-luster, medium-weight, stretch-woven satin that looks so rich. Tailor a princess-seamed dress and jacket with rhinestone buttons to wear to weddings and parties. It’s more festive than wearing black.

Feel the weight and texture of this rayon crepeon, which has more body than a challis. Choose Action Leaves when your pattern calls for a medium weight woven with drape. It will look smart paired with slacks tailored from either the navy corduroy, navy satin, or our next fabric, an antique gold stretch gabardine.

We chose Action Golden from our retail store’s Felix Collection because of how perfectly it coordinates with VF246-39 and VF246-41. This dark gold fabric has a warm cast, a hint of built-in ease from the spandex, and a hand similar to a wool gabardine suiting. Make a dress, slacks, and jacket that can all be dressed up or down depending on the accessories you choose.

Action Collection

With 80% of the island undeveloped, it is not surprising that sci-fi and fantasy film crews choose to shoot on location rather than using CGI technology. Cinematographers beautifully capture dramatic landscapes, from lava-scarred terrain, pock-marked crater-laden valleys, black-sand beaches, volcanic mountains, and hissing geysers - areas with little to no foot or car traffic to interfere with filming. Popular franchises filmed partially in Iceland include James Bond, Batman, Star Wars, Thor, and Aquaman. The northern lake area of Mývatn became the Wildling Land in Game of Thrones. Actress Rose Leslie who played Ygritte on GOT said of Iceland, “I think some of my favorite memories would have to be isolated out there, surrounded by nothing but snow and ice.” Matthew McConaughey and Jessica Chastain filmed Interstellar (2014) in Svinafellsjökull Glacier and Máfabót, each spot representing a different planet in the Chris Nolan-directed feature. Ridley Scott’s Prometheus and Brendan Fraser’s Journey to the Center of the Earth captured the beauty of the island. There is more incentive than stunning landscapes for filming in Iceland. According to FilmInIceland.com, production companies can apply for a 25% rebate on production costs for any portion filmed on the island. The incentive jumps to 35% for longer filming stints using local materials with a production cost of no less than 350 million Krona (about $2500 US), and production staff needs to pay Icelandic income tax on what they earn while in Iceland. The government is big on taxation, collecting 30%-45% per citizen, which supports things like a free nationalized health care system.

Moving from gold to platinum, create a festive look by wearing flowing pull-on pants from Action Silver crepe back satin, and a knit top made from Action Stars sweater knit. Silver threads create a glimmering effect, like twinkling stars in a moonless night sky. The silver thread is only felt on the front of this very lightweight doubleknit fabric, not on the reverse, which is solid black and very soft to the touch. Whip up a fun holiday top, or a waterfall-front jacket where the black reverse will show.

Action Cat medium-weight stretchwoven fabric is ideal for tailoring jackets, constructed dresses, and princess-seamed tops with skirts. The stretch runs along the grainline, so remember to cut your patterns out across the grain, allowing the stretch to wrap around your body.

We swatched Action Steel with the heathered side facing you so you can really see the difference. But choose whichever side you prefer when you cut and sew your next top.

Rounding out this very packed catalog is Action Shawl, the second double-faced fringed knit from Andria Lieu’s workroom. Make a cape, a giant wrap, or a pull-over, or turn the fringe into a design element running down the front opening of a cardigan. This is a fabulous option for making gifts.
