Enchanting Autumn
You’ll be spellbound by all the magical textures and weaves we conjured up for this exceptional catalog!
Magik Collection
On autumn nights, as chill winds howl, tall trees creak, and the distant burning of fallen leaves wafts through the crisp air, curl up in a cozy corner with a warm blanket and hot cocoa and ponder the magic of the season’s changing colors and scents. Such nights conjure thoughts of the three witches in Shakespeare’s Macbeth These evil crones became the gold standard for the way we portray witches. But long before the European witch hunts of Shakespeare’s day, even before the Black Death killed nearly half of Europe in the mid-15th century, villagers commonly consulted witches to cure minor ailments—much as they’d use the local apothecary or herbalists. Associating witches with the devil didn’t become popular until after the invention of the printing press which allowed laymen to publish pamphlets promoting their theories. At the end of the 15th century, Johannes Hartlieb’s Book of All Forbidden Arts and Ulrich Molitoris’s On Witches and Pythonesses presented as fact the many ways witches were connected to the devil, the occult, and “vengeful sorcery.” Concurrently, Europe was in the throes of a massive burgeoning of universities, many by Papal bull, offering “lectures in divinity, logic, philosophy, and law.” It was there that astrology of the ancients evolved into scientific astronomy. Philosopher’s experiments in mystical alchemy became the forerunner to modern chemistry. But the privileged classes studying mysticism and alchemy in the universities were spared the witch hunts that killed tens of thousands of mystics and peasants lacking the protective power and influence of the nobility.

Gear up your autumnal wardrobe with classic cool-weather weaves, such as Magik Cord, a rich purple 100% Cotton pinwale corduroy. Transform it into a skirt and vest to wear with a beautiful Magik Foliage blouse. This digital rayon challis print brings a twist to the traditional fall colors. We also envision it being worn as a tunic with stretch pants or a knee-length skirt sewn from Magik Imposter. The soft knit backing aids in the fabric’s recovery so you won’t get baggy knees and rear in your pants and skirts. Feeling empowered? Whip up an imitation leather jacket showcasing a metal zipper or silver purse press-lock closures instead of buttons.

Grimoires are books containing mystical elements such as magic spells, incantations, and potions. Since ancient times, these were passed down from one practitioner to the next to ensure the knowledge survived. One of the oldest grimoires, The Greek Magical Papyri, dates to Greco-Roman Egypt. Scribed on papyrus are “magical spells, recipes, and rituals” including “instructions on how to create a figurine similar to a voodoo doll.” A few spellbooks from medieval and Renaissance Europe feature light and dark magic and remain in print today. The Sworn Book of Honorius, considered the most influential grimoire, was compiled by a conference of magicians in the 13th or 14th century. They feared the wrath of the Catholic Church and recorded their combined knowledge in 93 chapters. The preface warns that anyone copying the work without permission will be damned, and those who copy it with permission must do so for personal use and have it buried with them when they die. Some of its many chapters include invisibility, manipulating the weather, opening locks, herbology, demonology, and bringing forth everything from dragons and griffins to jugglers, maidens, warriors, and castles. This work was cited by Johannes Hartlieb in his Book of All Forbidden Arts, Superstition and Sorcery in 1456. Reginald Scot’s The Discoverie of Witchcraft (1584) was the first grimoire published in English instead of Latin and is on display at the US Library of Congress. Scot is said to have written it, “to make it plain that ‘witches’ were not evil, but instead were resourceful and capable women who practiced the art of folk healing as well as sleight of hand.” Scot’s work enraged the paranoid Scottish King James VI who thought a coven of witches was out to get him, and drove King James to write an opposing treatise, Daemonologie (1597), several years prior to his most famous work, the King James Bible.

Last year, we featured this textured knit in a darker shade as VF235-02 UAP Grid. It sold out in a few weeks. Don’t delay if you wish to add this amazing piece to your Fall Collection. From fashion designer, Andria Lieu, comes Grimoire Grid. Don’t be afraid to let the reverse show - the black knit backing features a subtle leopard spot design. Craft a simple jacket to wear open atop a dress sewn from Grimoire Rust. This supple Ponte is similar to the Sophia Collection that Judy Kessinger mentions in her FitNice videos on Vimeo.com.

Grimoire Comfy heathered teal and black lightweight sweater knit feels incredibly soft to the touch. We featured this knit in black and tan in the spring catalog (VF242-12).
Before we had astronomy and chemistry, scholars practiced astrology and alchemy. Throughout China, India, the Muslim world, and Europe, Alchemy was a type of natural philosophy the Greeks referred to as a mystic art. Practitioners sought both a cure-all for human diseases and to transform the mundane into the revered. The most famous alchemical substance never created and always sought is the Philosopher’s Stone. It was believed that from this stone, an elixir of life could provide healing and immortality, as well as transform base metals like lead, mercury, and copper into gold. Sound familiar? This myth inspired J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (The title of the book was changed from philosopher to sorcerer for the US market). The symbol for alchemy influenced Rowling’s iconic symbol for The Deathly Hallows Books of Secret were types of publications written by women for women regarding hygiene and cosmetics. Renaissance Italy produced some female alchemists among the nobility. Caterina Sforza, notable for her fierce defense of the citadel in Forli against Cesare Borgia, practiced alchemy and left a private manuscript, Gli Experimenti (1500) to her son with over 450 herbal recipes for treatments of illness and wounds, and cosmetic changes such as lightening one’s skin and hair color. The Secrets of Lady Isabella Cortese (1561) introduced alchemy to a wide readership. Camilla Erculiani, a notable apothecary, wrote Letters on Natural Philosophy (1584). An outspoken defender of the great intellectual capacity of women, her works questioned existing doctrines on everything from astrology and meteorology to medicine and alchemy. The Roman Inquisition tried her several times for “blurring boundaries between natural philosophy and theology,” but records of the trial have magically disappeared. She escaped sentencing, in part by shifting her publishing from Italy to Poland.

It’s fitting we name this collection Alchemy because you can mix and match different pieces to transform your wardrobe. Create your capsule wardrobe with this dark duffle and hunter collection.
The first two look like they were made for each other. Alchemy Sofie is the “olive” from our popular Sofie Collection of lightweight Ponte de Roma knits (see additional colors online). Look at how perfectly the duffle matches the color of Alchemy Tooth, a light and supple houndstooth Ponte de Roma.
We wanted to find a third fabric in the same weight to enhance your capsule wardrobe, and presto! Feel the incredible hand of Alchemy Notte, then imagine making a fashionable knit bodysuit, flared knit pants, wrap dress, or jacket.....endless possibilities! You’ll look amazingly chic wearing a black knit dress with a wrap or shawl made from Alchemy Tiles, a semi-sheer black knit featuring dark olive velvet rectangles from the workroom of Andria Lieu.

How to Care For Your Fabrics
The care instructions in this catalog are a conservative path, but not an absolute. There is no one size fits all for fabric care because of all the variables, such as hard versus soft water, well and septic versus municipal water, washers with and without a center aggitator, dryers that have a no-heat option, etc.
One supplier would have everyone dry clean every fabric, but for many of you this is not feasable.
Here are some general guides. You can always use your swatch to test how a fabric will react to washing and drying. Test wash the way you plan to wash your finished garments - this will remove any sizing and shrinkage prior to cutting/sewing.
Pro-Tip: Set your washer for an extra long spin cycle to remove excess water, then toss in the dryer on low heat for 5 minutes before hanging or laying flat. This minimizes wrinkles, and helps fibers last longer.

Divine Collection
Mystics through the ages divined answers and predicted the future using methods like casting sand and stones, reading palms and bones, and interpreting flames and tea leaves. Ancient Romans employed divination as a means to discover the “will of the gods.” When Europe’s Renaissance embraced elements of Ancient GrecoRoman times, a resurgence in divination grabbed hold of the collective imagination. While science grappled with things that could be explained, divination tackled those that could not. Astrology saw a split between those who followed its science through astronomy and those who interpreted the planetary movements through predictive horoscopes. In the 15th century, the Romani became inextricably associated with chiromancy - palm reading. When the Chinese tea route became well established in Europe, tasseography (reading tea leaves) became popular....and again was associated with the nomadic Romani. Divination was easily accessible to the common folk and required little more than imagination and something to interpret. Swirl coffee grounds or tea leaves in the cup, drain the water, and what do you see? Does it appear near the rim or near the base? You see a star...that’s good luck. You see a crescent moon...there’s change afoot.

Tarot Collection
One of the most famous forms of divination is Tarot card reading. The tarot deck originated in the 15th century as a parlor card game, much like bridge or canasta today. Created for the nobility in the Northern Italian states of Venice, Milan, Florence, and Urbino, the cards were designed by local artists for well-paying patrons. The detailed beauty of each card, vibrant colors with gold embellishments, celebrated the glory of the family and the household’s status. It wasn’t until the 18th century, at the height of the neoclassic period, that the mystic application of divination was applied to the cards. Michael Dummett, a philosopher and tarot historian, writes, “it was only in the 1780s, when the practice of fortune-telling with regular playing cards had been well established for at least two decades, that anyone began to use the tarot pack for cartomancy.” Cognitive Market Research estimates Tarot cards will be a $93.80 million dollar business globally by 2027. In large part, this is due to increased interest among a younger audience learning about tarot on social media.

Five thousand years ago, the people of Mesopotamia looked to the night sky, seeking to make sense of the glimmering lights. They assigned meaning to shooting stars and the waning and waxing of the moon. Chinese and Greek astrologers gave names to clusters of stars, the zodiacs, creating stories and mythologies that enriched celestial mysticism. The Greeks taught astrology as a science, and it remained so through the Renaissance. In 1492, Italian philosopher and astrologer Marsilio Ficino wrote, “This century, like a golden age, has restored to light the liberal arts, which were almost extinct: grammar, poetry, rhetoric, painting, sculpture, architecture, music...this century appears to have perfected [astrology].” Renaissance astrologers drew from the ancient Greek works of Ptolemy as well as medieval Islamic studies. Scholars created almanacs which enabled people to apply the meanings of the stars and moon to everyday activities. Almanacs gave the most auspicious times to plant and harvest, to set forth on a voyage, and to get married. After being arrested by Queen Mary I in 1555 for using mathematics (akin to magic at the time), John Dee found favor in the court of Queen Elizabeth I just three years later and became her personal astrologer and trusted advisor. Astrology is still big business today with daily horoscopes, and computer programs that recreate the planetary alignment at the time of one’s birth. We’ll go out on a limb and say the stars are aligned in favor of you sewing beautiful new clothes this autumn!
