Winter/Holiday 2023

The Giving Season Settle in for the winter with a great array of plush textiles, Italian wools, lovely prints, and a plethera of knits. Sew for yourself, and create gifts to give to others.

Giving Collection The holiday season brings out the best in us when we give charitably and care for those less fortunate. As sewists, quilters, and knitters, it is in our DNA to make things for others. I have never met a quilter or knitter who has not made several pieces to give as gifts to friends for birthdays, baby showers, church raffles, or just because she was using up the last bits and pieces from another project. In this issue, I am providing a list of organizations that welcome homemade donations throughout the year. Set aside an afternoon for creating blankets with the kids or grandkids to donate to children in crises or animals in shelters. Not only will you be doing a good deed and charitable work, but you will be instilling this trait in the next generation. When you find yourself at home during a snowstorm or monsoon, go through your stash and sew up some cheerful walker caddies and wheelchair totes for nursing homes. Knit some hats, scarves, and mittens for the homeless, or for school children who are ill-prepared for winter. Quilt a blanket for a retired veteran or a wounded service member in a combat hospital. Sew a cross-body bag that will be filled with reusable feminine hygiene pads and soap for a girl across the world so she doesn’t have to miss school each month. It is so important that we not only give thanks for all that we have in our lives, but that we also take care of those who have lost so much or are struggling because of illness, abuse, or poverty. I have created a page on our website that links to the organizations mentioned in this catalog - please feel free to share this page with your circles of creative friends and family, and help positively impact the lives of strangers. If you know of additional charities or causes that have national appeal, please let us know. Sometimes we feel helpless when tragedy strikes. Here are ways to use your creative talents to make someone else’s life a little brighter, because you can make a difference.

Winter brings thoughts of cozy fireplaces, yummy hot beverages, and fashionable layering. Feel the first two swatches and imagine wearing a sharp jacket sewn from Giving Suede over a long, flowing dress crafted from Giving Imposter. If Giving Suede looks familiar, we featured the blush as VF235-22 in the Fall catalog. Heads up - the stretch runs lengthwise down the fabric, so lay your pattern out across the grain, allowing the stretch to wrap around your body. Anytime you have a reversible fabric, you immediately have more creative options: suede jacket with crepe lapel, cuffs, and welt pocket; suede dress with crepe side panels; suede skirt with crepe vest. The same is true for Giving Imposter, a reversible suede knit (and yes, we featured this in the Fall catalog in taupe as VF235-05). Sew a high-low top, skirt, or dress, a waterfall front jacket, or a handkerchief-hem skirt so the two sides are visible. Liverpool Crepe Knits continue to be strong for us, and this rust color from our basic stock collection fits perfectly into this collection. Giving Sienna features a crepe face, smooth reverse, wonderful all-way stretch, and is an easy-care fabric for work, travel, and hanging at home. Make a simple knit top to toss on over jeans, sew a sweater set, or create a crepe knit dress. New Look #6710 - skkirt

Great Copy Patterns #2035 “Cascade Mountain Pullover” This is a unisex pattern.

Wrap yourself in the sublime goodness we call Giving Cozy. When we received a collection of reversible plush sweatshirt fabrics, the staff went nuts telling each other what they were going to make and for whom. We pulled aside enough of each of the four colors to sprinkle into the catalogs. Giving Cozy features heathered camel on one side and light camel on the other. Sew a cardigan, hoodie, pull-over, sweat pants, or glam it up and make a wrap to throw over your shoulders when dining out with friends. This is a prime fabric for making seasonal gifts!

FitNice System “California Swing Vest” shown in VF236-03

To lighten things up, we present Giving Dash, a delightful rayon challis print in rusts and gold. We envision this as a lovely blouse or tunic, worn over slacks sewn from the rust Sanibel or from our upcoming corduroy. Get extra challis and whip up an infinity scarf to wear with a jacket, or a long scarf to bring drama to a Liverpool dress. From the same supplier who brought us the thyme green corduroy in the Fall catalog, Giving Pinwale camel corduroy is a wonderful neutral to contrast all the rust in this collection. This gem is ideal for wearing as a jacket and long skirt or slacks.

New Look #6543 Easy Tops

Gift yourself an haute couture outfit on a casualwear budget with the first two fabrics in this collection. Linus Intrigue is the type of rayon blend fabric you would see in the designer section of a high-end department store as a hooded jacket, or jacket with a large lapel, so the reverse shows. Dana Marie’s “Kimono Jacket & Vest”, Cutting Line Designs “Comfort & Style”, and Liesl + Co’s “Yanaka Jacket” are wonderful options. The colors are a stunning match to Linus Leopard, a signature print from fashion designer Adam Lippes. His casual tops and dresses sell for hundreds of dollars in ready-to-wear. We believe this to be a nylon blend, and it washes beautifully. Choose this as a semi-sheer blouse as well as a lining and scarf to pair with the Intrigue jacket or brown wool crepe jacket from VF236-13. Getting a little wilder is Linus Melange, a crazy, allway stretch knit we picked up from Chicago designer Andria Lieu. Your swatch may have a cheetah print, or it may look like knitted yarn or even a type of chain-link disk. The colors are predominantly gold and black, but there is also a creamy ivory and a hint of pale berry. Choose this cotton blend whenever your pattern calls for a light to medium weight allway stretch knit fabric. Do you see the designer’s name in the print, to the left of the text box?

Linus Collection For over ten years, Vogue Fabrics has been a drop-off point for our local chapter of Project Linus. Named for the blanket-wielding Peanuts character, this organization collects blankets for children in crises from illness or abuse. They have delivered over 9 million blankets in less than 30 years. You too can become a “blanketeer.” This 501(c)(3) charity “provides handmade blankets to children 0-18 in the United States who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need.” Project Linus has chapters in each state, provides patterns and ideas, organizes special events, and also accepts donations of materials for their chapter events. ProjectLinus.org Ryan’s Case for Smiles collects homemade pillowcases for donation to kids in the hospital who are grappling with illness and trauma. Over 40,000 bright, happy, 100% Cotton pillowcases are collected each September during their Miles of Pillowcase Smiles event, “each for a child in treatment for cancer.” Case for Smiles also provides resources and support for the parents and siblings of the ill child. Download the free step-by-step instructions for sewing a pillowcase, which only takes ¾ yard of a bright print and ¼ yard for the border. How many pillowcases could you sew from the fabrics that are already in your stash? How many smiles would that bring to kids in the hospital? They collect donations all year, and some of the more active chapters host regular events. CaseForSmiles.org

Dana Marie #1062 “Seams Easy to Me” #1039 “Terrific Trousers”

We know many of you live in “fabric deserts” and struggle to find fine, seasonal fashion fabrics. We are happy to present Linus Crepe, a rich chocolate wool with subtle visual texture and casual drape. Serge a wrap jacket, line some slacks, and structure a sheath dress. Subscriber perk: Save $10 per yard when you order during our exclusive Subscriber-only shopping period. Work this fabric into your wardrobe as a classic dark neutral. We love garments with simple lines and fantastic texture. Linus Autumn features a puckered golden leaf design with black undertones and dark caramel overtones. Double-knit with a black reverse, this medium weight, all-way stretch fabric is an easy choice for tops, wrap jackets, palazzo pants, and A-line dresses.

Did we mention how beautifully Linus Autumn pairs with Linus Suede, the brass version of our double-faced crepe-suede? Remember to lay out your pattern pieces across the grain so the stretch wraps around your body. We snuck Linus Ziggy into this collection, but we did not swatch it because of limited quantity. The colors are the same as Linus Autumn with the addition of stone and steel-blue. We do feature this fabric in a different colorway as VF23532 Valor Ziggy, which is swatched for you.

Angel Collection Nearly 1 in 7 babies US are born into poverty. Newborns In Need provides kits filled with diapers and wipes, thermometers, baby wash, and sleepers, among other essential items. “Talented hands create warm blankets, afghans, and quilts to fill the kits, lovingly created by Newborns in Need volunteers.” Their resource page provides patterns for sewing, knitting, and crocheting everything from baby hats and snuggle cocoons to keep newborns warm, to blankets, burp cloths, bibs, and footies. The sewn rectangular burp cloth takes only ⅓ yard of soft decorative fabric, like a quilting cotton or cotton flannel, and ⅓ yard of a terry cloth or chenille. Their snap-on baby bibs how-to page includes an instructional video for creating two matching bibs from ⅓ yard of a cotton print for the front and ⅓ yard of terry cloth for the back. If you have a small amount of yarn left over from a previous project, crochet or knit some tiny hats for preemies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). They also link to patterns for NICU-specific items, such as ventilator bonnets, NICU smocks, and hospital gowns. Newborns in Need is a 501(c) (3) organization that accepts handmade items as well as purchased new items for the kits, like bottles, diapers, rash cream, pacifiers, tiny socks, and pack-and-play sets with bassinet attachments. When you write your year-end newsletter to friends and family, include a link to the Newborns in Need Amazon wish list and give your loved ones the opportunity to donate to impoverished families with newborns. Just as tie-dye has made a comeback from the 1960s and 1970s, splatter paint is a defining look from the 1980s and we are seeing more of it on the market. Featuring a bevy of colors splattered onto a super soft double-brushed DTY knit, Angel Splatter also has bits of gold glitter. Rub your finger against the gold dust to see how well-affixed it is to the fabric. Whip up a quick Splatter top to wear with a cardigan, hoodie, or wrap-front sweater sewn from Angel Graphite, an all-way stretch double knit sporting a heathered gray face and solid graphite reverse. If you love sewing with French terry knits, you can use this the same way by sewing the flat side as the face and the textured side as the reverse. Or choose a pattern that has panels to showcase both sides of your garment. Angel Abstract continues the splatter idea, with black on magenta. In addition to 70% all-way stretch, this beauty is medium-weight, making it an ideal option for sewing sweater sets, princessseamed dresses, skirts, and even leggings.

We chose Angel Onyx from our stock collection of Liverpool Crepe Knits because the weight, stretch, and texture enhance the look of both of our magenta-black knits from Andria Lieu. Angel Reptile is another allway stretch, medium weight doubleknit that begs to be sprinkled into your wardrobe, as a top, skirt, or knit dress.

Why are some swatches cut with a straight edge and others pinked? Our die cutter broke down during production. Rather than delay producton three weeks, we continued to cut swatches using a table saw. It was a total “make it work” moment.

Faith Collection Animal shelters around the world work tirelessly, caring for abandoned pets and finding foster and forever homes for sweet, loving, furry creatures. Hugs Society is a 501(c)(3) organization that links donors with shelters and animal care centers around the world. A snuggle in a soft blanket goes a long way to helping an animal cope with the reality of living in a cage at a shelter. They even have a page for creating comfort blankets called Snuggles that help calm pets while providing them with a soft base for sleeping. Some animals are burrowers by nature, and Snuggles provide the perfect place to hunker down. These wonderful blankets also help brighten the shelter, giving it a more homey look, which makes a difference to visitors searching for their next family pet. On the Snuggles web page, you will find instructions for making three sizes of blankets that can be sewn, quilted, knit, or crocheted. You can donate your blankets directly to shelters listed on their website, or contact a shelter near you to see if they take donations of Snuggles. Fill out the donation form for the Hugs Society to keep track of the amount of donations they have inspired. For your efforts, all reported donations will receive a taxdeductible receipt by email (or mail your report to them with a self-addressed stamped envelope). SnugglesProject.org and HugsSociety.org

How to Care For Your Fabrics The care instructions in this catalog are a conservative path, but not an absolute. There is no one size fits all for fabric care because of all the variables, such as hard versus soft water, well and septic versus municipal water, washers with and without a center aggitator, dryers that have a no-heat option, etc. One supplier would have everyone dry clean every fabric, but for many of you this is not feasable. Here are some general guides. You can always use your swatch to test how a fabric will react to washing and drying. Test wash the way you plan to wash your finished garments - this will remove any sizing and shrinkage prior to cutting/sewing. Pro-Tip: Set your washer for an extra long spin cycle to remove excess water, then toss in the dryer on low heat for 5 minutes before hanging or laying flat. This minimizes wrinkles, and helps fibers last longer.

Long, flowing dresses are back in style for the winter, and we think Faith Blossoms is a wonderful fabric option. Lightweight and extra-wide, it won’t weigh you down and a little goes a long way. If you have sewn this type of fabric from us previously, you can attest to its wonderful softness, drape, and fluidity. Do you get chilled easily? Sew a wrap, shawl, cardigan, or hoodie from Faith Cozy, another of our reversible sweatshirt fabrics. Both the heathered gray and the black sides blend beautifully with the wide rayon knit print. Looking to make a wonderful gift? Whip up The Lounger by Great Copy Patterns from the double-faced sweatshirtings!

Faith Diamante double-knit comes to us from designer Andria Lieu. We added this as a bonus fabric because the color and texture are phenomenal. Unfortunately, we don’t have enough to cut thousands of swatches. You can’t go wrong with it - medium weight, all-way stretch, beautiful purple and black face in a stylish textural diamond design. It really is a perfect coordinate to wear with Faith Meadow, another of our extra-wide rayon jersey knits. Choose this ditzy print for sewing a wrap dress, asymmetrical tunic, or simple scoop neck Tee. Rounding out this collection is Faith Twinkle, the black version of our earlier Shimmer. Feel how soft it is, and imagine wearing it as a black knit top, lightly shimmering in the light of a cocktail party. It’s not gaudy or over-thetop. It’s festive yet understated, and a bargain at just $7.99.

Presenting Valor Paisley, a superb all-way moderate-stretch knit with low pile, subtle sheen, and classic print. Burgundy and black are the predominant colors, but there are shades of bronze, ivory, and pale pink. For casual attire, whip up a knit top to toss over jeans and boots. For office attire, pair that top with a jacket and slacks sewn from either of the next two fabrics. When was the last time you saw a black wool gabardine in your local fabric store? Let alone one made in Italy and competitively priced? Don’t miss out on this exquisite rich black suiting. Tailor an elegant sheath and jacket to have on hand. You can dress it up or down with a change of accessories, shoes, or even a change of buttons. Valor Ebony is a classic suiting option for all genders.

One of our regular vendors has added a line of premium ponte knits to their selection and we are featuring two in this collection. Valor Burgundy and Valor Forest are supple without being overly drapey, so you can easily construct princess-seamed dresses and jackets, and also wear them as pull-on slacks. Rayon gives these fabrics a soft hand, nylon provides body and structure, and the spandex ensures good recovery, eliminating baggy elbows and knees. Craving some casual attire for lounging at home this winter? Try Valor Ribs, a burgundy tie-dye rib-knit with allway stretch and great washability. Construct an origamistyle top and let the ribs become a design element. Also, create a snuggle-worthy pajama set to lounge in while chilling at home. We love the seasonal colors of the burgundy rib knit and the hunter ponte knit.

Valor Collection Military Veterans and Service Members sacrifice so much in order to protect our peace and way of life we enjoy at home. The trauma of serving in the Armed Forces takes a huge toll on them and their families. I am providing you with three organizations that collect quilts for donation to active duty and retired service members, as well as to wounded veterans in combat hospitals. Quilts of Valor has the tagline “Quilts = Healing!” “A quilt of Valor® is our award to Service Members and Veterans who have been touched by war. It says, ‘thank you for your service and sacrifice in serving our nation.’” They request high-quality 100% cotton fabric appropriate for adults, and they provide block patterns to get you started. Their LongArmy Volunteers provide free long-arm quilting for blanket tops to QOVF Members in good standing. These quilts go to specific service members who have been nominated and are awaiting their Quilt award. Qovf.org A similar group, Quilts of Honor, was founded by Vietnam Veteran Gail Belmont. Their “Quilted Hugs of Gratitude” are given to specific military Veterans who have requested to be, or have been nominated as recipients. A Quilt of Honor label is provided to each volunteer to include on the finished blanket. quiltsofhonor.org Operation First Response focuses on wounded and disabled service members, providing financial assistance. They also have a program called Operation First Response Backpacks, providing backpacks full of items to the wounded service members in combat support hospitals who arrived with no personal belongings. Sewn or quilted blankets are always needed and welcomed, sized 45x45 or 36x36 for the hospital cots (larger-sized blankets are accepted, but hand-delivered to military medical facilities in the States). All three of these are 501(c)(3) organizations. operationfirstresponse.org/ofr-backpacks/

Look at how perfectly Valor Ziggy picks up on the hunter and magenta colors in this collection, as well as gold and purple from previous collections. One funky knit top is all you need to pair with several solid match-mates. Toss on your new Ziggy cradigan with hunter ponte pants and a magenta Liverpool knit top. We chose Valor Magenta from our basic stock of Liverpool Crepe Knit fabrics because the texture and color coordinate beautifully with both Valor Ziggy and the flowers of Valor Garden, a Liverpool floral print on dark navy. These stable knits wash and wear beautifully, and should be go-to fabrics for all of your upcoming travel plans. Valor Garden has a large diagonal design that should not affect most patterns - it is not obvious and does not need to be matched. Make sure to dress up your wardrobe for the holiday season by adding in a garment or two sewn from Valor Temptress, a forest green stretch satin. This low-luster satin has built-in ease and looks just as beautiful as a constructed princess-seamed dress as it does a skirt or jacket. Liesl + Co “Strasburg Henley” “Girabaldi Skirt”

Hope Collection Homelessness is a growing problem in the United States. Bernina Sewing Machines has a blog post dedicated to charitable sewing that includes links for turning an old sweater into a warm cowl, quilting a fleece scarf, turning t-shirts into scarves, as well as making hats and mittens. weallsew.com/sew-to-serve-the-homeless/ Warm Up America! is a 501(c)(3) founded in 1991 for the purpose of providing knitted and crocheted clothing, blankets, hats, mittens, and scarves to the homeless and persons in need throughout the States. On their “Make” page, they provide links for patterns and yarns, how to assemble a pieced blanket, and what the current needs are. They even accept 7”x9” knit/crochet sections which are then joined together by volunteers. This is a fantastic way to use up the ends of soft, washable, acrylic yarns from your stash, as well as a fun way to teach kids how to knit/crochet while instilling in them the joy of doing good deeds to help others in need. https://warmupamerica.org/make/ Turning our focus to the other side of the world, SewPowerful. org provides stylish purses and feminine hygiene items to girls in Zambia so they don’t miss school during menstruation. In poor urban and remote villages in Zambia, there is a lack of affordable feminine products, so girls stay home rather than risk embarrassment. “Disposable products are not the solution because there is no garbage collection and the cost is an impossible barrier to overcome.” When girls fail to attend school regularly, they have a higher failure rate on their 7th grade exams, and become ineligible to move on to high school. Sew Powerful went from creating 504 purses their first year (2014) to providing over 22,000 last year. These cross-body bags are sent to Zambia where they are filled with reusable hygiene pads and soap. Sewists are welcome to donate $10 with each purse to cover the costs of the products that will fill it, and there is a downloadable notecard for writing a note of encouragement to the recipient overseas. www.sewpowerful.org/pages/purse-project

We end the Winter/Holiday 2023 catalog with an unusually large collection filled with holiday red, rich black, and shades of gray. A few simple garments from these lovelies and you can mix and match a sophisticated capsule for travel this season. Begin with Hope Avant, a red-grey-black-ivory zigzag print on a loose mesh we acquired from fashion designer Andria Lieu. Serge a simple, loose top with cut-on sleeves that you can toss over a base knit tank or camisole. Or sew a simple knit top using a lightewight jersey for underlining the bodice but not the sleeves to retain the sheer effect over your arms. Your top will look smart paired with 100% Italian wool slacks tailored from Hope Ash. One touch of this fine fabric and you will want to create several fashion separates for work and for going out on the town, saving yourself hundreds of dollars compared to ready-to-wear Italian wool garments. That’s one reason why we sew, isn’t it? These fabrics create designer looks without the high price tag.

Hope Crimson, a classic Ponte de Roma knit fabric in holiday red, is stunning on its own, as well as paired with most of the fabrics in this collection. Its firm hand is ideal for more structured garments, like pants and a jacket, or a princess-seamed dress. See how well it picks up the red in Hope Wild. The face comes alive with texture and color, while the black reverse has a subtle spotted-animal design in the knit. Craft a youthful hi-low top or dress, or a waterfall front knit jacket, where the reverse will show.
