We have been busy as bees, curating a summer collection that’s sure to make your wardrobe blossom and grow.
Thoughts of summertime are packed with farm-fresh veggies, fresh-cut flowers, and bees buzzing in our gardens. While there are about 20,000 types of bees (3500 native to North America), only one produces food we can eat - the mighty honeybee. Organized, efficient, and a master pollinator, this petite powerhouse is pivotal in our food production. As we continue to lose honeybees in massive die-offs, we risk a decrease in vegetative food production, including our fruit trees, nut trees, and flowering vegetables. Did you know that more and more people in rural and urban settings alike are creating safe spaces for honeybee colonies by tending hive boxes to help regrow the population? Here in Evanston, one family has several hive stacks on their second-floor balcony. Organic farmers are placing beehives on the edges of their fields. Beekeepers are being called upon to remove and relocate swarms safely, without the use of harmful chemicals. In this issue, we explore the workings of the honeybee colonies, the bees themselves, what’s in store for our collective futures, and how we can help prevent more die-offs.

This 6oz linen will retain its crispness when dry cleaned, or it will soften for a more casual look when washed. If you like to wash everything, make some wide-legged pull-on linen pants or shorts and a billowing button-down shirt to wear with a top sewn from the Sprigs or Blossoms.
Designed for knits with at least 25% stretch, this pattern includes two close-fitting cami styles with a built-in bra for support and shaping. The hierarchy of the hive (hiverarchy?) breaks down into Queen, workers, and drones. Drones are always male, and their only task is to mate with the Queen. Once this is accomplished, they die within hours. Worker bees have different assignments. Foragers flit about, collecting nectar and pollen which are used to feed the hive. Nurse bees care for the larvae, pupa, and baby bees. Attendants feed and bathe the Queen, including removing her excrement from the hive - bees can be a bit obsessivecompulsive about cleanliness. Construction bees build the iconic hexagonal beeswax structures into which the Queen lays her eggs and where honey is stored. Guard bees keep watch at the opening of the hive, protecting it from intruders. Undertakers remove dead bees from the hive (there’s that cleanliness thing again). The development from larvae to full adult takes a few weeks for workers and drones, and just sixteen days for a Queen. The Queen lives the longest, does the least amount of work, and is only responsible for producing more bees. Not a bad gig.
Beeswax honeycombs are made in hexagonal shapes, so it is apropos we begin our next collection with Duty Hexagon. Blueberry, raspberry, and mango form the striking design of this rayon challis print. The Sewing Workshop’s Gardenia can be sewn as a dress as well as a top, and the pattern has simple lines that showcase the fabulous print.
We continue to add new colors of Supreme Techno Crepe to our basic stock collection in our store, and this shade of pink brings warmth and joy to any summer ensemble. Duty Supreme stable knit has a lovely crepe face, plus it is a wash-andwear wrinkle-resistant fabric, making it ideal for creating lovely garments you can toss in your travel bag.
Imagine sitting on your patio, sipping some iced tea, wearing a short-sleeved top created from Duty Garden stretch-woven cotton lawn. Stay cool. Look cool. Make an Aloha shirt or sundress worthy of a Hawaiian luau.

So, how does a bee become the Queen? Is she anointed? Nope. It’s all in the food. All larvae are fed “royal jelly” - a nutrient-rich secretion from the nurse bees. After three days, the nurse bees begin to feed nearly all the larvae a mixture of fermented pollen and honey called “bee bread.” When workers are fed the bee bread, their ovaries don’t develop. A few remaining larvae are fed only the royal jelly to ensure ovary production, indicating the royal status. After all, the Queen’s entire raison d’etre is to produce more bees. If a Queen is killed or dies unexpectedly, nurse bees will begin to feed the most recently laid larvae just the royal jelly to trigger the production of ovaries, because a less fertile Queen is better than none at all for a hive. While workers and drones live a matter of weeks to months, the Queen lives up to six years, produces 1500-2000 eggs per day, and up to a million in her lifetime. When she isn’t sleeping, she is laying eggs. She will mate with a couple dozen drones, ensuring some genetic diversity for the health and survival of the colony. It is easy to spot the queen in the colony. She is the largest bee, about twice as long as the worker bees and a third larger than the drones.

The care instructions in this catalog are a conservative path, but not an absolute. There is no one size fits all for fabric care because of all the variables, such as hard versus soft water, well and septic versus municipal water, washers with and without a center aggitator, dryers that have a no-heat option, etc.
One supplier would have everyone dry clean every fabric, but for many of you this is not feasable.
Here are some general guides. You can always use your swatch to test how a fabric will react to washing and drying. Test wash the way you plan to wash your finished garments - this will remove any sizing and shrinkage prior to cutting/sewing.
Pro-Tip: Set your washer for an extra long spin cycle to remove excess water, then toss in the dryer on low heat for 5 minutes before hanging or laying flat. This minimizes wrinkles, and helps fibers last longer.

Recently a photo circulated on social media of a honeybee hive that had been created in a keeper’s box when he forgot to reinsert the frames. Emma Sophia from The Wonderful World posted “...the bees built their own architecture from the honeycomb, which takes into account natural ventilation, so that the air can flow freely and maintain a stable temperature.” The undulating architecture has several points of entry and an overall shape reminiscent of a stylized drawing of a lotus flower. Honeycomb is not just for storing honey, but also for nesting the eggs, larvae, and pupa in brood cells. It is built out of wax originating from glands in their abdomens. Bees protect the entrance to their hives and nests by reinforcing it with propolis, or bee glue, which Dtek Live Bee Removal likens to being “duct tape for the bee world.” The guard bees mix saliva, beeswax, and plant resins to create the propolis. The honey collected in the cells will take on hints of flavors and colors of the nectar nearby, which has become a cottage industry for small honey producers. Just check out the massive selection of all-natural honey at a farmer’s market. The mass-produced honey found at grocery stores is highly refined and pasteurized, while artisanal honey is not. Both are wonderful sugar substitutes since they contain antioxidants and enzymes beneficial to good health.

Varigated streaks in shades of blues and greens form the geometric shapes, then medallions of off-white scrolls float on top. Digital watercolor may sound oxymoronic, but just look at how gorgeous the colors are in Buzzy Elegance. A delicate mixing of jewel tones like purple, teal, fuchsia, and orange, appear strong in the foreground, while faded versions of the same appear faintly in the background. Wear this as a tunic over a silk charmeuse camisole, line it to wear as a flowing skirt or A-line dress, and roll the hems to whip up a scarf or dupatta.
Picking up on the fuchsia and orange colors of the challis, we found Buzzy Safflower, a cross-woven 64” wide linen. Tailor a beautiful ensemble for a garden wedding or your summer office attire by sewing a straight linen skirt and jacket to wear with a lovely challis blouse.
Honeybees collect both nectar and pollen. The foragers drink nectar from flowers which they store in an organ referred to as the “honey stomach” containing enzymes that break the sugars down from complex to simple (less prone to crystalization). It may take 50-100 flowers to fill this stomach, at which point she returns to the colony and regurgitates the contents to the worker bees who pass the nectar to each other, repeating the process of refining the sugars, until the viscosity is thick enough to seal into a cell of the honeycomb. They fan their wings to help evaporate more water content to thicken the honey further, before capping the cell. Evaporation of the water content is key to preventing the honey from spoiling. One worker bee will produce 1/12 teaspoon of honey in her lifetime, while the entire colony will produce more than 200 pounds in a year. Only 1/3 of this can be safely harvested for human consumption without compromising the health of the colony since they eat it throughout the dormant winter months. Nectar produces honey, but pollen produces beebread. While the foragers are out collecting nectar, they build up static electricity, causing pollen to jump onto their legs where they push the pollen into special storage pouches. The worker bees collect the pollen and add a pinch of saliva and a dash of honey to create a nutritious substance called bee bread. This feeds the colony, providing fats, minerals, and vitamins. It is also the food given to the larvae destined to be anything but a queen.

The oldest known references to human use of honey date back 8000 years, depicted in Stone Age paintings. It was used medicinally for treating wounds and stomach ailments, and modern science supports the wisdom of the ancients by defining its antibacterial and antifungal properties. Ironically, a fatal bacterial disease called American Foulbrood (AFB) is now one of the catastrophic events facing honeybees, along with climate change and chemical weed killers. In the US alone, nearly 30% of colonies have died off in recent years. Record temperatures from climate change can overheat or freeze colonies no matter how much they fan their little wings. Laura Shae from Applewood Farm noted that several of her bees flew out on a particularly sunny winter day and froze upon leaving the hive, scattering their tiny bodies on top of the surrounding frozen snow. Glyphosate, a key herbicide found in top brands like RoundUp, alters the microbiome of honeybees, making them more susceptible to infections. Even vinegar, a popular weed treatment used by organic growers, kills bees. According to Carolina Honeybees, “The most effective bee-safe weed killer is your two hands and a hoe.” What humans may define as a weed, a bee may see as a lovely spot to collect nectar and pollen. European research into the effects of Glyphosate on wild bee colonies shows a change in temperature regulation within the nests, reducing the amount of viable, healthy larvae. When you are out in your yard this summer, make sure to plant beefriendly flowers to provide colonies with a safe-haven full of pollen and nectar. Let’s save these incredible creatures!

Future Chill crinkled cotton gauze features a melange of colors woven with a heathered effect. Summer sewing should be simple and fun. One a rainy (or blazing hot) day, stay indoors and whip up some cute new garments. We envision this stripe as a tank worn with loose drawcord pants sewn from Future Heather, a burgundy and off-white cross-woven 5oz Euro Linen. Bea in Customer Support washes all her Euro Linens. She says she buys a 1/4 yard extra to counteract any shrinkage, tosses it in the washer and dryer, and loves how it softens and fluffs up. You can iron it if you want, but the washed linen looks fabulously casual with loose wrinkles here and there. We are adding many new colors to our popular Euro Linen collection online.
