A Jubilant Janmashtami Celebration at ISKCON of Houston

J

anmashtami, Lord Krishna’s appearance day on earth, was celebrated on Saturday September 5, 2015 at ISKCON of Houston. More than 5,000 guests attended this devotional festival. Many came donned in their finest, colorful sarees and well pressed dhotis for the biggest birthday bash. The temple grounds held a variety of entertainment for everyone.

strands of rich colorful roses, yellow spider mums, white gladiolas and red apples intertwined in fresh greenery with hints of baby breath. Strands of strung green limes and yellow lemons also hung above the deities. Tall 4’ foot vases stood on the altar filled with green apples. Two large elephant figures stood at each side of the beautifully adorned deities.

There was a booth for ladies to get elegant henna plus a children’s area where kids played games and practice their artistic skills by coloring a picture of Krishna. Devotees assisted with putting tilak on guests and distributed chandan. In Guaranga Hall, the enthusiastic youth held cultural programs such as dance acts and performances relating to Krishna’s pastimes. Furthermore, guests also gleamed at having the opportunity for abishek and julan of Bal Gopal deities. Next to the Gauranga Hall, free sumptuous prasadam was served to all. The pillars on the altar were draped in

The decor accented Sri Sri Radha Nilamadhava’s outfit and Their ornaments. Their outfits were bedecked with sequins and jewels that every color imaginable glimmered. The deities radiated magnificently with the decor and amorous atmosphere from the many kirtans held throughout the evening. by Dr. Krishna Dronamraju s I was watching the press coverage of the Trayvon Martin murder case unfold, it immediately occurred to me that I have seen this scene before. Innocent unarmed people, sometimes children, are shot dead by either the police or some other group. In the case of Trayvon’s murder, the perpetrator was approved by the local police authorities as an individual who could be trusted as an effective and competent vigilante. Even after Zimmerman confessed to the murder of Trayvon, the police did not detain him or conduct an extensive investigation. No DNA samples were taken to test the veracity of Zimmerman’s claims. Is Trayvon’s race a factor in not pursuing the investigation further? It was only after the case became a national sensation in the daily press and TV reports that the Federal Government paid attention and the State Attorney for Jacksonville area, Angela Corey, was appointed to prosecute the case. NRA The National Rifle Association (NRA) opposes even the slightest regulation of the right to bear arms of all kinds including the assault rifles. According to the NRA manifesto: “The Second Amendment says, “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” The right to arms derives from the right of self-defense, and therefore is an individual right. Thomas Jefferson said, “No free man shall be debarred

A

the use of arms.” Patrick Henry said, “The great object is that every man be armed.” Richard Henry Lee said, “To preserve liberty it is essential that the whole body of people always possess arms.” Thomas Paine said, “Arms . . . discourage and keep the invader and the plunderer in awe.” These antiquated statements reflect a time when it was considered necessary to allow and encourage individual citizens to bear arms for national defense. People also used guns to provide necessary food. But today we live in a different world. In the nuclear age guns are hardly necessary. If we follow these outdated statements, by the same token we can also argue that slaves need not be free and black people and women have no voting rights. It is as if the suffragette movement never took place and the civil rights act was never passed by the Congress. This case has drawn new attention to self-defense laws that give people a broad right to use deadly force without even considering alternative possibilities. Until today, Wayne LaPierre, Executive Vice-President of the NRA, had declined to comment on the Martin case, citing a need to learn all the facts. During a recent NRA gathering, he deplored the publicity surrounding the Trayvon case and called the news media “a national disgrace.” But without that publicity the case would never have seen the daylight. Lessons for the next generation There is an important lesson here for the Indian community. Beware of the surrounding community and the area where you live, play and work. Be cautious in choosing what you wear in public and how you speak in public. Many Americans do not know you are an Indian or

understand an Indian accent. Becoming a target of a robbery is another motive for being careful. We live in a violent society, probably the most violent in the world. Handguns are used in almost half of the murders committed each year in the United States. We live in a violent culture. Our daily conversation is replete with violent words. What do children see on television? Disputes are settled by gun violence. There is no room for Gandhi in this society. Children’s games and toys are often associated with guns and violence. The U.S. Government is not helpful either. Resolution of international disputes often involve violent solutions. In recent years, wars started with no prior declaration or congressional approval. Civilian casualties are not even mentioned. When Bush sent cruise missiles to attack Baghdad no leader in Washington even raised any concern for civilian deaths. The only person who expressed such concern was Deepak Chopra in a TV programme. Armed conflicts are often described in a soothing inoffensive language in the news programs on television. What used to be called “Bombing” in the second world war is now called “air strikes”, an almost benign expression, like advertising some new product. Wars and deaths are often pictured as

remote events, as if they are not connected with any human causation. Using drones has taken this process even more remote. People do not see the consequences of their actions. Bombs falling on civilian areas causing the deaths and injuries of women, children and older people is never shown in television news. There is a disconnect between what Americans see on the TV screens and the suffering resulting in several countries. Concern for human suffering should not stop at the water’s edge. It is no wonder then that the public rarely shows any concern or emotion when a new war starts. It is like starting another program in TV entertainment. In fact, the line between real violence and entertainment is blurred. But we pay taxes which support these wars. My point is that violence in the society is not isolated from other events. What we see daily in the news and entertainment influences social and personal behavior.Easy availability of guns makes it much more likely to commit murders. STORY OF MAHATMA GANDHI

Gandhi fights British attempt to divide Hindus Part XVIII Early in 1932 Gandhi wanted to meet the new Viceroy, Lord Willlingdon, but the Viceroy made it clear that the days of negotiations were over. Gandhi informed the authorities that he was again starting a civil disobedience movement. The Viceroy thought it was a threat and had Gandhi arrested and lodged in Yeravada Central Jail. Several other leaders and many followers of Gandhi were also arrested and jailed. Now read on:

t home Gandhi found that the Government had returned to the policy of repression. There were widespread arrests and the Government seized the properties and bank balances of people and organizations who were hostile to their interests. Early in 1932 Gandhi wanted to meet the new Viceroy, Lord Willingdon, but the Viceroy made it clear that the days of negotiation were over. Gandhi informed the authorities that he was again starting a civil disobedience campaign. The Viceroy thought it was a threat. He had Gandhi arrested and imprisoned in Yeravda Central Jail. Several other leaders and many of Gandhi’s followers were also arrested and sent to jail. In March the struggle entered a new phase. Gandhi had always insisted that the untouchables were a part of the Hindus and must be treated as Hindus. Now, however, it was announced that the British proposed to set up separate voting for the untouchables. That meant that untouchables could vote only for members of their own caste. Gandhi regarded the Hindu religion as one and indivisible. He saw the game the British were playing. It was an attempt to weaken Hindu society. “Separate treatment of untouchables cannot be allowed,” Gandhi declared. “Here is an attempt to make untouchability last for-

ties, anxious to avoid any tragedy, allowed everyone to have free access to Gandhi. But all efforts to dissuade him from fasting unto death were of no avail. The die was cast. Gandhi was going to fast. Rabindranath Tagore sent a telegram: “It is worth sacrificing precious life for the sake of India’s unity and her social integrity. Our sorrowing hearts will follow your sublime penance with reverence and love.”

Mahatma Gandhi Week in Houston from Sept. 26 to Oct 2, 2015. Various activities are being planned, including essay competitions for children, lectures, exhibitions, seminars, etc. This will be done in collaboration with several Houston area Indian and American cultural and religious organizations. For more information, call Atul Kothari at 713-785-3900 or visit www.mahatmagandhi ever. Unless untouchability is destroyed we can never have self-government.” “But what can you do about this election law now?” asked a friend. “I can die,” was his prompt reply. “I will resist this evil provision with my life.” Gandhi announced that he would soon start a fast unto death unless the plan for separate electorates was changed. The public announcement of his intention threw the country into panic. The Indian leaders were shocked at Gandhi’s decision. Even Jawaharlal Nehru thought that Gandhi was taking a drastic step on a side issue. During the time between the announcement and the day when Gandhi’s fast was to begin, streams of visitors arrived at Yeravada jail. The authori-

Gandhi started his fast on September 20, 1932. The first day of the fast was observed all over India as a day of prayer and fasting. Many temples were opened to untouchables and meetings were held all over India urging the removal of untouchability. Outside the jail political activity came to a boil. Leaders of upper case Hindus and untouchables met and discussed various measures to try to arrive at a compromise that would satisfy Gandhi. Proposals and counterproposals were made and considered. Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the most powerful leader of the untouchables, met Gandhi and assured him that he would try his best to find a just solution. On the third day of the fast, Gandhi’s condition caused anxiety to all his friends. He was very weak and had to be carried to bathroom on a stretcher. His voice was feeble, his blood pressure was rising. The authorities grew panicky. They sent for Kasturba and allowed all his friends and followers to be with him in jail. On the fifth day of the fast, Hindu leaders finally reached an agreement and signed a pact that would do away with the separate electorates. Gandhi, however, would not accept the pact unless it had been ratified by the British rulers. News came that the British had approved the pact; but still Gandhi would not break his fast until he had seen the text of

The official document of the British government’s approval to the pact came and Gandhi accepted it. Gandhi was released from prison in early 1933. Shortly thereafter he suspended the mass civil disobedience movement but sanctioned individual civil resistance to the government’s policy of repression. For the next seven years, Gandhi worked hard for the social and spiritual awakening of the people. Many leaders, including Nehru, did not approve of many of Gandhi’s activities. “But,” said Nehru, “how can I presume to advise a magician?” Sabarmati Ashram had been seized by the government during the salt satyagraha. SO Gandhi established a little retreat at Sevagram near Wardha in Maharashtra. This became his headquarters. New reforms sponsored by the government got little sup-

port from the people. However, many people, including Congress workers, wanted to try them out as a means of furthering the Swaraj movement. In 1939, the Second World War broke out. England and France declared was on Nazi Germany. Without consulting Indian leaders, Britain declared India also to be at war on the side of the allies. Though Gandhi’s sympathies lay with the British, he believed that all violence was evil and therefore he would have nothing to do with the war effort. The Indian National Congress wanted to help Britain and fight on the side of the allies, but only as a free nation. But to grant India independence seemed ridiculous to Prime Minister Winston Churchill and his government. They had no intention of letting India go by default. Britain refused to accept the cooperation offered by the Congress. As a protest, all the Con-

gress ministries in the provinces resigned. The government took over the administration and they too all measures that would help the effort. Acting on the goodwill and restraint taught by Gandhi, the Indian leaders showed no reaction. However, events in Europe were having repercussions in India. The Congress Working Committee found itself unable to accept in its entirety Gandhi’s attitude to the war. In particular, they would not accept his view that the defense of India should not depend on the armed forces. Congress leaders met several times in Gandhi’s room at Sevagram and talked of their desire to start some action. Finally a proposal was put forward that all provincial governments should join with the British authorities in the defense of India, but the British rejected the offer. ---------------to be continued

Justice court limit is $10,000 Q. I loaned someone $15,000. He has never paid me back. I know the limit in small claims court is $10,000. Can I just sue him for $10,000 and forget about the rest of the money? A. First, the new name for Texas small claims court is “justice court.” The rules, however, are basically the same. As you recognize, jurisdiction in justice court is limited to $10,000 or less. You cannot “adjust” the amount you sue for to get into justice court. Jurisdiction is based on the amount in controversy, not how much you ask for. If the amount involved is more than $10,000, the court cannot hear the dispute, even if you agree to take less. You loaned him $15,000, that is how much he owes you, and it is above the jurisdiction of the justice court. Q. Am I entitled to a paid leave when I have a child? My employer has told me any leave will be without pay. Under the Family and Medical Leave Act, you may be entitled to up to 12 weeks leave, depending on the size the company and how long you have worked there. The law, however, does not require that the leave be with pay. All you may be legally entitled to is an unpaid leave. Q. My sister has a power of attorney over my deceased father’s property. I don’t think she is doing what he said to do in his will. Is this legal? A. A power of attorney gives someone the right to manage the affairs of another. A power of attorney, however, terminates at death. In other words, your sister’s power of attorney is no longer valid. The will should be probated and the executor is the one who will manages your father’s estate. Q. Is a will valid if I do it myself? Does it have to be notarized? Do I have to use an attorney? A. There is no requirement that an attorney prepare a will. In fact, in Texas, a will written completely in our handwriting and signed, called a holographic will, is valid without the need for any witnesses. There also is no requirement that a will be notarized to be valid. Having said this, my advice is to have an attorney prepare your will or use a professional online provider to avoid any possible problems. Doing it yourself may save a few dollars, but a simple mistake will cost your loved ones substantially more, both in terms of money and time. It also does not have to cost much money to have an attorney prepare a will. Many attorneys will prepare a simple will for a reasonable fee. I suggest you make some phone calls and shop around with your attorneys. My guess is you find one that charges a price you can afford. Q. I do not want to be kept alive by life support if I have a terminal condition. How do I get a copy of a living will? Does it have to be notarized to be valid? What does it cost? A. The document you are referring to is an “advanced directive,” commonly called a living will. For a free copy of a living will, just go to my website, www.peopleslawyer.net, and click on “Legal Topics.” A living will does not have to be notarized, but must be signed by two witnesses. You may make several originals to insure that it will be available when needed. For example, you can give one to a family member, one to your physician and one to a close friend. There is no cost to download the form. Q. A credit application I filled out asked for the name of a relative as a “contact” person. I am now behind in my payments. Does the person I listed have any liability for my debts? A. A person you list as a “contact,” does not have any liability for your debt, unless he or she otherwise agrees to pay it. For example, if your relative signed as a co-signer or guarantor, she would be liable if you did not pay. Based on what you say, the company has the right to contact her in an attempt to locate you, but she has no liability. A Jubilant Janmashtami Celebration at ISKCON...... Continued from page 1 As the night went on, the crowd at the temple slowly increased for the grand midnight aarti of Sri Sri Radha Nilamadhava. Prior to the midnight arati, the ecstatic kirtan made everyone - both young and old, to dance happily. This was followed by a wonderful Lord Krishna’s appearance pastimes on earth described by His Holiness Gunagrahi Das Goswami. As midnight approached, devotees chanted “Nand Gher Anand Bhayo, Jai Kannaiya Lal Ki”. It became more ecstatic as the clock ticked down to midnight. Then, as soon as the curtains opened, the crowd gasped and roared at the astonishing sight of Sri Sri Nilamadhava in their night outfit which was a mix of dark green and orange jeweled beautifully. Just as they were all watching the beauty of Their Lordships, another beautiful kirtan was lead and took everyone to a new high. This lasted for another hour before the devotees slowly left the temple to honor prasadam. Harris County Judge Ed Emmet proclaimed Saturday, September 5, 2015 as Krishna Janmashtami Day in Harris County. On Sunday, August 6, 2015, the celebration continued for

oustonians interested in spirituality, dharma teachings, wellness and mindfulness have a unique and valuable opportunity coming up in the next couple of weeks. His Holiness Swami Vidyadhishananda, the spiritual founder of Self Enquiry Life Fellowship, will be visiting our city and will offer three unique events to the community. Readers might remember having attended his thoughtprovoking and inspiring discourses and fellowships in past years in venues as diverse as University of Houston, Rice University, Arya Samaj, Ashtalaxmi Temple, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, and Museum of Fine Arts. Swami Vidyadhishananda is an ordained Vedic monk of the ‘Giri’ monastic order who reveals to us a Himalayan tradition of Vedic wisdom based on his lineages of Sanskrit heritage. He is a Himalayan meditation master from the combined heritage of rishi sages and nāth yogis. Such a unique combination of a yogi, mystic and scholar is rarely seen in a saintly teacher. His Holiness teaches Vedic philosophies with exquisite clarity and initiates seekers into Himalayan meditation techniques. He is among the very few scholars in the West to hold the degree of Mahāmahopādhyāy (Great Ordained Teacher) awarded by the university system in India due to his scholarly and meditative interpretation of Sanskrit literature. His sublime recitation of Sanskrit peace chants opened the 54th session of the General Assembly of the United Nations in 1999. He has lectured around the world as an emissary of peace, bridging

This event will be held on Wednesday, 16th Sept 2015 at 7:00pm at the Heights School of Yoga, 1547 Rutland Street, Houston, TX 77008. 3. Holistic Learning the Vedic Way The final program in Houston is titled Holistic Learning the Vedic Way. During this discourse and multimedia pre-

These methods have been successfully practiced by generations of students to improve memory and preserve lineagebased indigenous knowledge. This accelerated learning relies on combining sublime recitation and breathing techniques. Children feel inspired by whole-brain learning which brings about development of personality and graduation with values. My cousin is in Canada and he said they need a lot of cooks.” In her late 20s, she is among the oldest of the class of 39 mostly teenaged students at her government-run school in Manila. countries. Filipinos are big assets in the global catering industry because of their English proficiency, the ease with which they adapt to the host countries, and a resilience that belies their easy-going nature, according to Pascua. “These are soft skills that we have that make us a little more distinct than either our neighbours or other workers all over the world,” he said. Pascua also said a graduate of the entry-level six-month course at his school, supervised by the Philippines’ Technical Education and Skills Development Authority, would be able to master the ba-

sics in any kitchen. “Your employers will know that you won’t drown in the kitchen. You won’t make a mess of anything,” he said. There are about 2,500 cooking schools -- mostly private but also governmentrun -- in the Philippines, according to Pascua. - Remarkable trailblazers The culinary trail was blazed by Pablo Logro, a former dishwasher who rose to become the personal chef of the sultan of Oman. Logro got his start helping prepare soft buns for a Chinese restaurant in Manila, which gave him a ringside view of its chef’s Asian cooking. He then got a job as a chef’s assistant at a Manila hotel, where he befriended an Arab guest who offered him a sous chef job in Oman in the early 1980s.

It turned out to be at the Al Bustan Palace, where guests of the sultan would stay. In interviews with Philippine media, Logro said during his decade-long career in Oman he regularly cooked lamb for the sultan and served visiting royalty and heads of state. Returning to the Philippines, he became the first Filipino executive chef of a five-star hotel. He eventually left the job to open his own culinary school and establish himself as a celebrity chef with his own successful television cooking show. A more recent success is Cristeta Comerford, who began as assistant chef in Bill Clinton’s White House in 1995 after working at five-star hotels in the United States. She was then appointed executive chef in the presidential kitchen in 2005 by

George W. Bush’s wife, Laura, a position she carried into the Barack Obama presidency. Visiting the Philippines last year, Obama highlighted her introduction to the presidential family of two of the better known Filipino dishes. “Thanks to her, we in the White House enjoy the occasional lumpia and adobo,” he said in his toast at a state dinner, referring to fried spring rolls and meat marinated in salt, garlic and vinegar. - Cooking creating dreams Evaristo, the former bank clerk, has far more modest ambitions, hoping to earn more money than her previous career that paid just 14,000 pesos ($300) a month. After on-the-job training at a Philippine hotel or restaurant following her six-month schooling, she hopes to join a cousin in Canada who is the head chef at a Vancouver restaurant.

China, India drive Shuffle the playing cards, Australia’s best tourism year it’s Janmashtami again! since Sydney Olympics jumped 22 percent to 864,000. They also spent big, contributing Aus$7 billion, a 32 percent spike, to account for around Aus$1 in every Aus$5 spent by international visitors during the year. Tourists from the United States (544,000) and New Zealand (1.2 million) also rose, while those from Britain and Japan remained steady. India was one of the fastest growing markets, boosted in part by Australia co-hosting the Cricket World Cup with New Zealand, with 207,000 people making the trip, up 20 percent, and their spending surpassing Aus$1 billion for the first time.

YDNEY, Australia - A boom in cashed-up visitors from China and India has helped Australia record its strongest tourism year since the Sydney Olympics, officials said Wednesday, with more than Aus$33 billion (US$23.1 billion) pumped into the economy. The government-run Tourism Research Australia’s International Visitor Survey showed that seven percent more people made the trip in the year to June 30 to reach a new high of 6.6 million -- the best since the hugely successful Games were held in 2000. Tourists from China

“Tourism can be our fastest growing sector this decade if we continue to leverage our ‘clean, green and safe’ brand to position ourselves as the number one, long-haul destination in Asia,” Trade Minister Andrew Robb said. “With China now accounting for one in every five dollars spent by international visitors, it is clear that China is vital to the sustained growth of our tourism sector.” New South Wales, home to Sydney, was the most visited state, followed by Victoria and Queensland.

N

EW DELHI, India - Human pyramids breaking buttermilkfilled earthen pots (dahi-handi) may be a popular activity on Janmashtmi but for some, the celebration of Lord Krishna’s birth is more about the thrill of ‘teen-patti.’ People start playing ‘teenpatti’ or ‘three-cards’ a month before Janmashtami with clubs and farmhouses being especially booked for the occasion. Meena Sachdeva, a gaming enthusiast says the game of ‘teen patti’ has a mythological connect with Janmashtami, a festival signifying an end to social evils. “Gujaratis replicate this age old story and play teen patti on a very large scale before Janmashtami and end it on the day of festival,” says Sachdeva. With jobs separating people miles apart, booking hotels or clubs for the game has become difficult for the players who now resort to play the game online.

Shantanu Mathur, an online player says that when he was in US, he used to play teen-patti a lot on Janmashtami with his Gujarati friends. “But with time, I moved to

India and my friends got settled in different places. So playing it online is the best way to catch up with the fun of this game with friends,” says Mathur who expects to play this year as well on Janmashtami. Saurabh Aggarwal, CEO and founder of Octro Inc, which has digitised the centuries old game of teen-patti. Teen-patti, also known as flush or flash, is a card game. The game is about winning or losing one’s money, which is considered illegal in many parts. However, says Aggarwal playing it online may not raise any frowns as the real money is replaced with virtual money. “The excitement of the game remains the same as we give people eight different variations, we have communities as well and we have also tried to mimic the same feel for people who play it offline. We give them virtual currency to enjoy the game with family and friends,” says Aggarwal. Navneet Verma, who plays the game online says since virtual money is used the game cannot be really called as gambling. “Your points are calculated and that’s what determines your triumph or victory in the game. It’s not really about the

According to Aggarwal maximum number of players for teen-patti are usually from Maharashtra and Gujarat on Janmashtami but on Diwali there are more users from North India. “If you look at south, there is more preference for rummy than teen-patti. And if we consider all time users of teen-patti irrespective of festivals, then it is Maharashtra and Gujarati. Infact, they even play a lot offline,” says Aggarwal. Another enthusiast Raashi Gupta says that she starts playing teen-patti a little before Janmashtami and continues to play till Diwali since she has friends from both states. “We have Facebook group for the game so whenever all my friends are online, we join there only and start playing the game. Online makes it even more interesting as there are many challenges. Infact, as far as I remember, last year in a game there was a challenge and the prize was a trip for the top two players,” says Gupta. Considering this trend for teen-patti, Aggarwal says that since he saw a ten per cent increase in the number of users on the day of Janmashtami last year, Octro Inc has especially introduced premium tables online with different colours and different feel on September 5 this year. “Initially when people join, we give them virtual money for free and once they use it, they buy more. But for Janmasthmi people can put in nominal amount and win about a crore virtual chips,” says Aggarwal.

EW YORK - Youth may be wasted on the young and so it seems is the US Open, where four of the men’s quarter-finalists are over 30 and two more have already celebrated their 29th birthdays. This year’s New York showpiece featured a record 40 men over 30 in the first round, up from 32 in 2014. The oldest was evergreen German Tommy Haas, the 37-yearold who was playing in his 17th US Open. There were 10 teenagers -- the most since the 12 which featured in 1990 -- but only two survived until the second round. No man born in the 1990s has won a major. Roger Federer is the oldest man left. The 34-year-old fivetime champion is due to face 29-year-old Richard Gasquet on Wednesday for a semi-final spot. The 17-time Grand Slam title winner is playing in his 64th consecutive major, a run stretching back to 1999. He believes his longevity is a result of making drastic changes to his schedule a decade ago. “The idea was always trying to be around the game for a long time. And for that in 2004 when I became world number one, I took a decision with my fitness coach at the time that we’re going to plan long term,” said Federer.

Coming into New York, Federer had played just 12 tournaments in 2015, winning five titles, and skipped Switzerland’s defence of their Davis Cup title. World number one Novak Djokovic, the second youngest quarter-finalist at 28, had played one event fewer, capturing six titles. Haas’s career has been plagued by injury, but he believes the physical strength of the older players is keeping them at the top of the game. “A lot of things have changed with technology. Seems like sometimes the surfaces are a little bit slower, balls are getting heavier,” he said. “It’s gotten a lot more physical. Everybody is getting more fit, bigger and stronger and hitting with more velocity, more spin.” The second oldest quarterfinalist is Feliciano Lopez, who will be 34 on September 20. He has made the last-eight for the first time in 13 attempts.

He faces Djokovic while, in the same half of the draw, 30year-old Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, in his second career quarter-final in New York, takes on defending champion Marin Cilic, the baby of the eight remaining men at 26. The last time that four or more men over 30 made the quarterfinals was in 1982. Kevin Anderson, who put out third seed Andy Murray in the fourth round, is playing his first Grand Slam quarter-final in his 27th major. The big South African will be 30 in May and he puts his late success down to a belated start to his professional career. He only turned pro in 2007 at the age of 21 after studying at the University of Illinois. “My body’s holding up great. I really do as much as I can to take care of myself,” said the Johannesburg-born, Floridabased Anderson, who faces 30-year-old French Open champion Stan Wawrinka for a semifinal spot. “Going to college and turning pro a little bit later, I always felt myself a little younger than maybe some of the other guys my age who have been on the tour a little bit longer.” He added: “Just watching Roger playing at 34, just moving incredible. “I’m still improving. My desire is still there. Right now I don’t think age is something to worry about.”

Implant captures US researchers and Doctors Without Borders to receive “America’s Nobels” cancer cells: study and Stephen Elledge, 59, of Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School, will be honored for their work laying the foundation of our understanding of how cells detect and repair damage to their DNA. The University of Texas immunologist James Allison, 67, will be honored for developing new cancer therapies that rely on the body’s own immune system to fight tumors. Those therapies have been credited with extending the lives of hundreds of patients with metastatic melanoma, a form of cancer that without that treatment kills half of patients within a year.

ASHINGTON - Three US researchers and the NGO Doctors Without Borders have won prestigious Lasker Awards, sometimes referred to as “America’s Nobels,” the foundation behind the awards announced Tuesday. The awards, which are given out annually to recognize ma-

jor contributions to medical science, come with a $250,000 prize and will be presented at a ceremony in New York on September 18. Doctors without Borders was honored for showing remarkable leadership in taking on the Ebola outbreak in West Africa “while others sat on the sidelines,” Alfred Sommer, chair of

the Lasker Foundation’s Public Service Award jury, said in a statement Tuesday. The group, he said, not only worked on the ground to contain the outbreak but “urged international governments to take this outbreak seriously.” The geneticist Evelyn Witkin, 94, of Rutgers University,

“This year’s Laureates have opened up new frontiers into genetic processes essential to all life; developed novel cancer therapies that unleash the immune system; and worked with great dedication to contain a devastating Ebola epidemic,” Lasker Foundation president Claire Pomeroy said in the statement. “They remind us all that investing in biological sciences and medical research is crucial for our future.” The awards have been given out since 1945 and 86 former winners have also won a Nobel Prize, according to the foundation.

WhatsApp bug opened door to hacking

S

AN FRANCISCO WhatsApp recently patched a flaw that left 200 million users vulnerable to being hacked using boobytrapped digital cards for contact details, according to a US computer security firm. Facebook-owned messaging application WhatsApp boasts more than 900 million users, some 200 million of them who access the service on computer browser software that mirrors activity from mobile devices. A flaw in the web version of WhatsApp made it possible for hackers to hide malicious code in seemingly innocent “vCards” containing contact information. Opening tainted cards allowed viruses to infect computers, potentially allowing hackers to steal control or information,

Vitamins against violence: aggressive Dutch inmates to get health kick

T

HE HAGUE, - A Dutch study aims to get a grip on violence in prisons by prescribing vitamins and minerals for inmates with anger management issues, justice officials said Wednesday. Starting early next year prisoners at seven institutions who show violent tendencies will receive added vitamins, minerals and fish oil, the justice ministry said. “Two previous experiments have shown that aggressive prisoners who receive food supplements show less aggression than those who do not,” said Ap Zaalberg, a researcher at the ministry. A British study carried out in the late 1990s showed violent incidents in prison dropping by at least a quarter after supplements were added to prison food, Zaalberg told AFP. A similar study of 200 prisoners in the Netherlands in 20062007 showed a drop of 34 percent in incidents, Dutch daily De Volkskrant recently reported. “We are now checking whether the addition of food supplements can be introduced in prisons as common practice, including as a form of treatment for aggression,” said Zaalberg. Boys and men at five prisons and two youth detention centres, aged from 12 to “quite old”, would take part in the study, he said, adding “the aspect they’ll have in common are anger issues.” Aggression is a feature of prison life in many countries. Roughly a quarter of prison workers in the Netherlands experience threatening behaviour by inmates, De Volkskrant reported. Food scientists at Wageningen University near Utrecht however said although supplements could have a positive effect, Dutch prisons should instead focus on improving prison cooking. A positive effect on prisoners “really starts in the kitchen,” nutritional scientist Frans Kok told NOS public broadcaster.

closed the vulnerability to WhatsApp last month and that an updated version of the application was released.

P

ARIS, France - Scientists in the United States said Tuesday they had created a tiny implant which, in mice for now, captures cancer cells spreading through the body. Cells moving from the original cancer site to infect other organs in a stealthy process called metastasis are usually detected too late to save a patient’s life. The early detection of circulating tumour cells, or CTCs, in the bloodstream can speed up diagnosis and life-saving treatment. But these wandering cancer cells travel in very small numbers, often for long periods of time, before settling in a new site, and are thus very hard to spot. The study, published in the journal Nature Communication, suggests that capturing CTCs would prevent their spread and help halt disease progression. “Animals receiving an implant had a significantly reduced burden of disease in their lungs relative to animals that did not have an implant,” study co-author Lonnie Shea at Northwestern University in Illinois told AFP. In experiments, Shea and a team built biodegradable disks about half-a-centimetre (0.2 inches) wide, and implanted two per mouse. The implant -- which used immune cells as bait -- also contained a scanner to detect the presence of trapped cells. “The combined systems can enable the early detection of

metastatic disease,” Shea said by email. “The initial benefit is detection -- catching the metastasis before it spreads widely throughout the body,” he explained. “However... the opportunity to reduce burden (of cell spread) can potentially extend the period of time over which therapies may be effective.” As a bonus, the implant collected metastasised cancer cells for analysis, making it easier to identify the best treatment. There was no reason to believe the results achieved in lab mice could not be replicated in humans, said Shea. “The main idea of cells colonising organs is the same between mice and humans, and while some of the details may change, we think we can build that into the design of our implant.” Shea said he hoped clinical trials with human cancer sufferers could begin soon.

Mr Kher has been honoured with various awards and recognition for his contribution to cinema and art. Atul Kumar Anjan, Communist Party of India national secretary, told a rally on Tuesday the adverts featuring Indo-Canadian Sunny Leone should be banned for “developing sexuality and ruining sensibilities” (AFP Photo/Strdel)

N

EW DELHI, India An Indian politician came under fire on Thursday for saying a condom advert starring a well-known porn star would trigger a hike in rapes, in the latest controversial remark over sexual violence. Atul Kumar Anjan, Communist Party of India national secretary, told a rally on Tuesday the adverts featuring Indo-Canadian Sunny Leone should be banned for “developing sexuality and ruining sensibilities”. “If condom ads like this are shown on Indian television and in newspapers, then rape incidents will rise,” Anjan told the crowd in northern Uttar Pradesh state. “This must be stopped,” he said. Women’s groups slammed the comments as ignorant as a backlash against Anjan spi-

ralled on social media in India. Although the communist party plays a minor role in national politics, the comments fuel concerns of a lack of awareness among politicians on causes of sexual violence against scores of women. “Comrade - rape is caused by men’s sense of entitlement and lack of concern for women’s autonomy and consent. Not by pornography, naked women or any other ‘provocation’,” women’s activist Kavita Krishnan posted on her Facebook page. The fatal gang-rape of a student on a moving bus in New Delhi in December 2012 sparked a massive public outcry and led to tougher laws for sexual offenders. But India’s politicians have also been accused of trivialising such crimes. A former chief minister of

northern Uttar Pradesh state, Mulayam Singh, triggered outrage during the national election last year over comments about rape in which he said “boys make mistakes” and “boys will be boys”. The central Madhya Pradesh state government’s home minister also said last year that rapes were “sometimes right, sometimes wrong”. Several politicians have also sought to blame tight jeans, short skirts and other Western influences for the country’s rise in rapes, while the head of a village council pointed to chow mein which he claimed led to hormone imbalances among men. Leone, 34, a porn star turned Bollywood actress, was drawn into a debate in 2013 on whether to ban porn outright in India following a series of brutal rapes.

“Thank you to all my well wishers for birthday greetings... Just arrived in NYC. Thank you once again for your love and kind wishes. Looking forward to performing in New Jersey on 13 September,” the singer tweeted. Bhosle, who has been singing for past six decades, also thanked her elder sister ‘Melody Queen’ Lata Mangeshkar for her “invaluable” guidance. “Didi’s ashirvad (blessing) is always with me but this time it’s special since I’m far away on tour in USA and her support and guidance is invaluable,” Bhosle posted on twitter. The singer, who began her playback singing career in the shadow of Mangeshkar in the late forties, has collaborated with music directors such as OP Nayyar, Sachin Dev Burman, RD Burman, Khayyam and Bappi Lahiri.

Known as an avid follower of Ganesh Chaturthi, Neil celebrates the festival with great fervour with his family and friends every year but is saddened that, while we pray to Lord Ganesha, captive elephants suffer. Singer Asha Bhosle, She gave Hindi cinema some of its most memorable songs including “Jhumka Gira Re”, “Raat Akeli Hain”, “Aaja Aaja”, “Dum Maro Dum”, “Dil Cheez Kya Hain”, among others. The singer has also worked with younger music directors like AR Rahman and Anu Malik in the nineties for films like “Baazigar”, “Rangeela” and “Taal”. Celebrities like former Australian cricketer Brett Lee, Raveena Tandon, Mika Singh wished Bhosle ‘Happy Birth-

day’ on twitter. “A big happy birthday to the lovely @ashabhosle I hope you have a wonderful birthday,” posted Lee, who recorded a song “Haan Main Tumhara Hoon” with the singer in 2006. Raveena said, “Wishing @ ashabhosle whom I’ve idolised grown up with her songs, a very happy birthday! May she continue to enchant/enthrall us forever.” “Happy birthday to the living legend @ashabhosle ji.. God bless you,” Mika wrote.

The well articulated actor, who is also an ardent animal lover, considers it is his ethical responsibility to educate his fans on how the majestic jungle kings have been turned into slaves and are deprived of a natural habitat that’s integral to their well-being. “It’s paradoxical that on one hand, we revere Lord Ganesha, and on the other hand, we ride on elephants – for which their minds are caged, bodies are tormented and souls are imprisoned. You can help put a stop to this insensitive crime by refusing to ride on elephants.” states, Neil. So-called elephant “joyrides” are least joyful and

most painful for the elephants who are forced to participate in these revolting practices. A PETA-commissioned investigation of elephant training in Nepal and a PETA investigation of elephants used for rides in Jaipur revealed that elephants are physically and emotionally abused at every juncture.

Neil’s hairstyling was done by Amit Parekh and make-up was done by Wasim Shaikh Ahmed. Keep an eye out for other visuals of this campaign here on the PETA site shot by ace photographer Rohan Shrestha. You can help by encouraging your friends & family never to ride elephants!

Most Americans’ hearts are older than their actual years

M

IAMI, AFP | 9/1/2015 - Three out of four Americans’ hearts are older than their chronological age, raising the risk of heart disease, stroke and premature death, officials said Tuesday.

69 million adults between the ages of 30 and 74 have a heart age older than their actual age.

An online tool at www.cdc. gov/heartdisease/heartage.htm can help people determine how old their heart is, based on factors like weight, smoking, diabetes and high blood pressure, said the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The average predicted heart age for adult men was nearly eight years older than their chronological age, and 5.4 years older for women, it said.

For most adults aged 30–74, their predicted heart age is “significantly higher than their chronological age,” said the CDC in its Vital Signs report, released Tuesday. Researchers found that nearly

“That’s about the number of people living in the 130 largest US cities combined,” the CDC report said.

When researchers divided people according to race, they found the highest heart ages among African-American men and women, who had an average heart age of 11 years older than their chronological age. Risk factor data was collected from every US state and information from the Framingham

Heart Study, which began in Massachusetts in 1948 and has followed thousands of people over time in an effort to identify the causes of cardiovascular disease.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death and serious illness in the United States. CDC officials said they were releasing the report and the online tool in the hopes that they would encourage people to be aware of their heart health and take measures to prevent heart disease before it is too late. “The heart age concept was created to more effectively communicate a person’s risk of dying from heart attack or stroke -– and to show what can be done to lower that risk,” the report said.

Maintaining a healthy weight, keeping blood pressure under control, not smoking, getting enough exercise and eating right are the top ways to avoid heart disease, experts say. “Because so many US adults don’t understand their cardiovascular disease risk, they are missing out on early opportunities to prevent future heart attacks or strokes,” said Barbara Bowman, director of CDC’s Division for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention. “About three in four heart attacks and strokes are due to risk factors that increase heart age, so it’s important to continue focusing on efforts to improve heart health and increase access to early and affordable detection and treatment resources nationwide.”

New imaging agent available at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital aids in the diagnosis of patients with parkinsonism

S

UGAR LAND (September 3, 2015) — The first imaging agent approved by the FDA for use in capturing images of the brain is now being used by neurologists at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital to accurately diagnose patients with a parkinsonian syndrome, a group of conditions that includes Parkinson’s disease. DaTscan™ is a radioactive agent that is injected into the bloodstream and flows to the brain, where it can be easily seen with special imaging technology called a SPECT camera. SPECT imaging with DaTscan can help physicians determine if a patient’s movement difficulties are due to a parkinsonian syndrome or another condition known as an essential tremor. In a normal scan, the imaging agent’s activity will appear as mirrored comma or crescent shapes if sufficient dopamine transporters (DaT) are intact or not affected. In an abnormal scan, the activity will appear in circular or oval shapes on one or both sides. “This imaging agent is a step in the right direction for the timely and accurate diagnosis of patients with parkinsonian syndromes, including

Parkinson’s disease,” said Toby Yaltho, M.D., fellowship-trained movement disorder neurologist at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital. “Without these detailed images of the brain, we rely solely on clinical examinations, which can be inconclusive, especially in the early stages of the disease.” There are several different types of parkinsonian syndromes, with Parkinson’s

disease being the most wellknown. Parkinson’s disease affects more than one million Americans, but the disease – along with other parkinsonian syndrome conditions – can be difficult to diagnose.

ment and prognosis differ. Having another diagnostic tool to help in these challenging cases will help tremendously in reaching an appropriate and timely diagnosis for patients.”

“The challenge for physicians is differentiating parkinsonian syndromes from other conditions, such as essential tremor, that mimic it,” said Yaltho. “While the symptoms are similar, treat-

NY becomes first US city to add salt warnings to menus

N

EW YORK - Eating too much salt can cause high blood pressure, heart disease and strokes. And now New Yorkers will get that warning loud and clear when they browse a restaurant menu.

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio has committed to re-

ducing premature mortality by 25 percent by 2040. Last year, New York raised

to 21 the minimum age at which a person can buy cigarettes.

“High sodium intake is dangerous. It is linked to increased blood pressure and risk of heart disease and stroke,” said the city health department. “With a simple menu icon and statement to alert restaurant customers which items have exceedingly high sodium, New Yorkers will have easily accessible information that can affect their health,” it added.

CMS gives another boost to Medicare Advantage plans

O

n April 6, CMS released final updates to the Medicare Advantage and Part D programs through the 2016 Rate Announcement and Call Letter. The finalized policies will continue to strengthen the growing Medicare Advantage program, and continue the successful implementation of the Affordable Care Act’s reforms that improve quality and provide greater protections for beneficiaries and value for taxpayers. Recent Trends in Medicare Advantage and Part D • Enrollment continues to grow – MA enrollment has increased by 42 percent since passage of the Affordable Care Act in 2010 to an all-time high of more than 16 million beneficiaries, with nearly 30 percent of Medicare beneficiaries enrolled in an MA plan. • Plan quality continues to improve – In 2015, 60 percent of MA enrollees will be enrolled in a 4 or 5 star plan, compared to an estimated 17 percent back in 2009. • Premiums remain affordable – Average premiums today are lower than before the Affordable Care Act went into effect, dropping 6 percent between 2010 and 2015. 2016 Rate Announcement Expected Average Change in Revenue 1.05% - 2016 Advance Notice 3.25% - 2016 Rate Announcement Effective Growth Rate 1.7% - 2016 Advance Notice 4.2% - 2016 Rate Announcement Updated Growth Rate The 2016 rate announcement reflects an underlying per capita growth of 1.9 percentage points of additional FFS spending for 2014 and 2015 and 0.6 percent for 2016, and 0.1 percent for the assumption that Congress will enact the pending legislation to permanently fix the SGR. The updated growth rates reflect the Office of the Actuaries’ best estimate of Medicare spending and are not the product of discretionary CMS policy. The underlying per capita FFS costs continue to demonstrate a historically slow health care growth rate and that growth rate remains below the per capita gross domestic product growth rate. Initial information from Medicare actuaries suggests that contributing factors behind the change from the preliminary growth rate include higher than expected spending on inpatient hospitalizations and some intermediary services such as therapy, rural health clinics and federally qualified health centers. As always, when changes occur, we’ll continue to watch developments closely and work to understand these factors in greater detail. Value-Based Contracting In January 2015, the Secretary announced the Administration’s vision for moving the health care system toward paying providers based on quality

Sudhir Mathuria Contact: Sudhir Mathuria Licensed Professional Health Life 360 6650 Southwest Freeway Houston TX 77074 713-771-2900 www.MyMedicarePlanning.com rather than the quantity of care they provide. In the Call Letter, CMS continues to signal an intention to begin working with plans participating in Medicare Advantage to better understand, through a voluntary effort, the extent to which they use valuebased payment models to compensate providers offering services to their enrollees. Seniors Love Their Medicare (Advantage) Whether enrolled in traditional Medicare or Medicare Advantage, Morning Consult polling shows Americans aged 65 and older expressing high levels of satisfaction with their federal health benefits. But when asked about individual pieces of their insurance—like prescription drug coverage, the benefits that are covered, and preventive care—seniors using Medicare Advantage reported higher satisfaction rates, sometimes by double-digits. The poll of 3,975 seniors found that 85 percent of seniors on traditional Medicare said they were satisfied with their plan, compared to 88 percent of seniors on Medicare Advantage. Despite registering nearly identical satisfaction levels for the overall programs, 80 percent of seniors on Medicare Advantage said they were satisfied with the overall cost of their plans, compared to 68 percent of traditional Medicare seniors. The gap in satisfaction appeared in every individual measure, with Medicare Advantage proving more popular every time. Robert Berenson, a Medicare expert at the Urban Institute who previously served on the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission, said seniors on Medicare Advantage often get more benefits and have to pay less out of pocket, because the federal government ends up paying more per beneficiary when compared to traditional Medicare. “With more seniors signing up for the program, insurers are getting more help from Congress to pressure the Obama administration to protect payment rates from any reductions. IACCGH hosts Small Business Outreach event by Manu Shah

A

s part of its Small Business Outreach Program held on August 26 at the Houston Community College Campus, the Indo American Chamber of Commerce of Greater Houston (IACCGH) introduced members and guests to two organizations that can facilitate the growth of their businesses. A presentation from Chris Bilton, Houston Director of the Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA) outlined the benefits the Agency offered ethnic minorities to help their business grow. Strong ethnic minority owned firms can help the US economy and MBDA, operated by Houston Community College (HCC) provides these minority owned businesses help with raising capital, contracts and consulting services. The Agency, according to Chris “showed a 59 times return on investment.” Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Business Outreach Director Elizabeth Carreno also offered an overview of the

ber to “educate the community on best business practices.” He also encouraged the gathering to reserve their seats for the IACCGH 16th Annual Gala which features the US Ambassador to India, Richard R. Ver-

supportive network of advisors and peers and access to capital. Applicant requirements include business operations of at least two years, business revenues of at least $150,000 and a minimum of four employees which

Fast food, fast jobs: Chipotle to hire 4,000 in one day

N

EW YORK - Chipotle, the burrito chain whose rocketing growth has fast-food giants like McDonald’s reeling, is not slowing down: it plans to hire 4,000 new staff in one go on Wednesday. Built on a pitch of fresh, organic and locally sourced ingredients, the thriving US chain is making clear it is not ready to ease up on expansion plans. It opened about 100 new restaurants in the first half of the year, taking the total to 1,850, and says it needs the new staff to keep up that pace of growth. Each of its restaurants around the United States (it has only a handful outside the country) will interview up to 60 applicants between 8 am and 11 am on Wednesday, with the aim of adding another 4,000 employees to its 60,000-strong workforce. “We are constantly looking for great people to join our team. Regardless of your back-

ground or experience, you can succeed at Chipotle if you have a passion for making the people around you better,” said cochief executive Monty Moran in a statement. “Working here isn’t just a job, but a career where employees learn how to make others better, run a successful business, master culinary skills, and most importantly, lead teams of top performers.” Company spokesman Chris Arnold said the response had been very strong. By midday Tuesday, more than 50,000 people had registered on the Chipotle website for interviews. At around $10 an hour with health insurance, paid time off and sick leave, the entry-level jobs promise more than those offered by many other fast-food companies which have only recently pledged to increase their wages to that range. The company also said that promotions were more common among its staff, with 95

percent of managers coming from restaurant staff rather than being hired from the outside. Founded in 1993, Chipotle expanded quickly over the past 10 years in leading urban areas based on a Tex-Mex menu of burrito wraps and tacos that stresses organic, non-genetically-modified ingredients and meat from humanely raised livestock. While its prices are higher than McDonald’s or Burger King, it has eroded the market share of both in cities and suburbs, though it has not ventured out into more rural America where both, along with other giants like KFC and Wendy’s, are omnipresent. It has also started developing an Asian rice and noodles chain, ShopHouse, and is partowner of the Pizzeria Locale chain in two western US cities. For the first six months of this year, revenues rose 17 percent from a year earlier to $2.29 billion, and net profits at $163 million were up 11.5 percent.

Apple unveils new iPhone 6S, 6S Plus

A

pple on Wednesday unveiled two updated iPhones, aiming to build on the success of its large-screen handsets introduced late last year. The new smartphones are the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus, keeping the same overall dimensions of the last version. “They look familiar, but we have changed everything about these iPhones,” chief executive Tim Cook said at a San Francisco media event. One of the key new features is called “3D touch” which responds to pressure exerted on the screen to allow users to look inside messages and applications.

The new iPhones will use the upcoming iOS 9 operating system, which supports new features such as 3D touch. The 6S will include the 4.7-inch (about 12-centimeter) display of its predecessor and the 6S Plus -- one of the more popular handsets in the Phil Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of “phablet category” worldwide marketing, introduces the new Apple -- has a 5.5-inch Pencil at the Apple event in the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco, Wednesday, Sept. 9, screen. 2015. MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY FROM HBR.ORG Make Sure Your Team’s Work Styles Are Balanced It’s hard to advise your As a leader, it’s important to understand your work style and the styles of your employees: Prioritizers focus on goals, deadlines, and facts. Planners ask how the project will be delivered and completed. Arrangers want to know who the stakeholders are and who else should be involved. Visualizers consider why the project matters and what the end of the project will look like. All four types of people bring a valuable perspective to the table, and companies need all four types to remain competitive. Realistically, your team probably won’t have a balance of all four styles, but you can bring on new members or call in outside experts to bridge the gaps. And if your team is heavily weighted toward one or two styles, recognize the value in balancing it. Work style diversity ensures you’ll have people focusing on both the big picture and the details.
