Alcohol poisoning kills 34 in Pakistan, suspects held

I

SLAMABAD, Pakistan | AFP | Wednesday 12/28/2016 - Pakistani police on Wednesday caught three men accused of preparing home-made liquor mixed with aftershave that killed 34 people including a fourth suspect after they consumed the toxic brew on Christmas Eve. More than a hundred people were also sickened in the incident, one of the country’s deadliest cases of mass alcohol poisoning, which happened in a Christian neighbourhood in the town of Toba Tek Singh some 340 kilometres (211 miles) south of Islamabad. “Four people have been identified who prepared and distributed the toxic liquor,” senior police official Atif Imran, who is investigating the case, told AFP, adding the group had also consumed the alcohol themselves. “One of them died because of the liquor, two others are in critical condition while the fourth is in police custody,” he added.

The suspect in police custody had confessed to preparing the brew by mixing it with 20 litres of aftershave and other chemicals.

The development was confirmed by another senior police official Usman Akram Gondal.

“I was given a copy of Healthline magazine. After reading the first article, I could not put it down. I read it cover to cover. I was especially interested in the article on autoimmune diseases as my daughter and I both suffer from them. I look forward with great anticipation to your next issue. Thanks for the great magazine, and keep up the good work.” - Rose, The Woodlands.

Though legal breweries exist in Pakistan, alcohol sales and consumption are banned for Muslims and tightly regulated for minorities and foreigners. While wealthy Pakistanis buy foreign alcohol on the black market at heavily inflated prices, the poor often resort to home brews that can contain methanol, commonly used in antifreeze and fuel. Eleven Christians died in October after consuming toxic liquor at a party in Punjab province. In October 2014 29 drinkers were killed after consuming methanoltainted liquor over the Eid public holidays.

Pakistan’s fourth nuclear power plant, built with China’s assistance inaugurated

SLAMABAD, Pakistan | AFP | Wednesday 12/28/201 - Pakistan’s fourth nuclear power plant went online Wednesday, a joint collaboration with China that adds 340 megawatts to the national grid as part of the goverment’s efforts to end a growth-sapping energy deficit. Pakistan is one of the few developing countries pursuing atomic energy in the wake of the Fukushima nuclear disaster in Japan in 2011, as it seeks to close an electricity shortfall that can stretch up to 7,000 MW in peak summer months, or around 32 percent of total demand. The Chashma-III reactor, located some 250 kilometres (155 miles) southwest of capital Islamabad, is the third built as part of a collaboration between the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) and China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC).

EW DELHI, India | AFP - India’s government has banned some 20,000 charities from accepting overseas funds because they failed to comply with the rules, a home ministry official said Tuesday.

where charities, especially foreignbacked ones like Greenpeace, have come under increased scrutiny since Hindu nationalist Prime Minister Narendra Modi came to power in 2014.

KS Dhatwalia, a spokesman for the federal home ministry which revoked the licences, told AFP that they had been cancelled “over the period of one and a half years”.

A major crackdown began in early 2015 after an intelligence report said groups like Greenpeace were damaging the country’s economy by campaigning against key development projects.

“They have not followed FCRA (Foreign Contribution Regulation Act) norms while applying for (licence) renewals,” he said.

The government has cancelled licences of thousands of NGOs since then, citing misuse of overseas donations to harm the country’s growth.

Without the licenses the NGOs will not be able to receive overseas donations, which could likely impair their day-to-day operations.

Critics have argued that the apparent clampdown was an attempt to stifle voices of dissent.

Dhatwalia, however, said they can reapply and have their licenses renewed by the ministry.

An Indian charity running schools for low-caste Dalit children said last week it was set to close down after its foreign funds were blocked over alleged threats to national unity.

“Applications can be sent again. And if they are renewed and revalidated, these NGOs can receive foreign funds and start regular work.”

The country’s first nuclear plant was supplied by Canada in 1972, with an installed capacity of 137 MW.

Meanwhile that leaves only 13,000 NGOs with licenses in India

The home ministry said the charity had engaged in “undesirable activities aimed to affect prejudicially harmony between religious, racial, social, linguistic, regional groups, castes or communities”
