Indian couple dies in Yosemite while apparently taking selfie

OS ANGELES | AFP | 10/30/2018 - An Indian couple who fell to their deaths in California's Yosemite National Park were apparently taking a selfie, according to a family member and media reports. Vishnu Viswanath, 29 and Meenakshi Moorthy, 30, died last week after falling from Taft Point -- a popular overlook at the park that does not have a railing -- and their bodies were recovered by park rangers on Thursday. Viswanath's brother told local media in India that he believes the couple were taking a selfie when the tragedy happened. The pair, who lived in the United States, were travel enthusiasts and had a blog called "Holidays and HappilyEverAfters" that chronicled their adventures. In a recent Instagram post, Moor-
thy posted a photo of her sitting on the edge of the Grand Canyon and reflected about the "daredevilry" of taking pictures from dangerous locations. "Is our life worth just one photo?" she wrote. Authorities said park officials were investigating the deaths and the probe could take several days. The couple fell almost 800 feet (245 meters) in an area surrounded by steep terrain and rescuers had to use a helicopter to recover the bodies. Some 259 people have died worldwide in recent years while taking selfies, according to a study published earlier this month in the Journal of Family Medicine and Primary Care. Most of the deaths took place in India where 159 selfie deaths have been reported since 2011, the study said.

O
ne may have to go back far in the history of America and still may not find a week quite like the last one which was marked by three major acts of violence linked to hate and demonization with political overtones. These included the October 24th killing of two Black Americans by a White Supremacist Gregory Bush at a grocery store in Jeffersontown, Kentucky, the October 26th arrest of a Donald Trump enthusiast Cesar Sayoc of Florida for sending 14 IEDs (Bombs) to two former Democratic Presidents, currently serving members of US Congress, former chief of the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), a major financier of liberal causes, and media giant CNN, and the October 27th Jewish massacre by the White Supremacist Robert Bower at a Pittsburgh Synagogue – all in the preceding week with intense political campaigning for the 2018 mid-term elections. While on the surface these dastardly incidence appeared isolated and separated, they indeed bore remarkable similarities in terms of their intent and purpose on part of the perpetrators. These were all carried out in the open against the victims who were personally not known to the perpetrators. The only fault the victims had was their race or religion or political affiliation. Besides the killings of the individuals, the purpose of these crimes was conveyance of a message of hate, intolerance, and political disagreement. Since these incidence have occurred so close to the midterm polls, people are sensing nefarious political motives behind these acts. This included even President Donald Trump who suggested in one of tweets a linkage between delivery of “Bombs” by Cesar Sayoc and its negative impact on the Republican momentum in the Congressional races. Such association is natural because the intended targets as well as the actual victims of these tragedies were either members of the racial and religious minorities who typically vote Democratic or the members of Democratic Party itself.

Just exactly who is responsible for these evils acts or what motivated Gregory Bush or Cesar Sayoc or Robert Bower to engage in these dastardly acts is a matter of intense debate and disagreement among Americans. While no one other than the perpetrators themselves are responsible for their actions, some point figure to the President as being the source of motivation by his inflammatory and divisive rhetoric against his political opponents. This cannot be, however, completely discounted because President’s words do matter to people. And that is exactly how he persuades and convinces people to vote for his choice. So, why would some not believe him when he labels Media, enemy of the people or political opponent evil? President trump has been seen mocking and demonizing, and calling his political adversaries and opponents evil or non-patriotic to the cheering crowds – all with justification to win in 2018 mid-term elections. He has been also calling the free American Press as the enemy of the people or Democrats as some unruly mob deserving to be suppressed by some physical force. It was on the very day of the arrest of the Cesar Sayoc that President again blamed media for political violence in the country rather than his own divisive rhetoric
contributing to such polarized atmosphere. Incidentally, all the intended victims of bomb threats by Cesar Sayoc were those whom either President or his surrogates in the Conservative media had been criticizing and demonizing for some time by calling them un-American or un-Patriotic. These included former Presidents Clinton and Obama, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, CIA Director John Brennan, Senators Kamala Harris and Cory Booker, and currently serving Representatives in the US Congress. To justify President’s actions, his defenders argue that divisive and demonizing talk is on both sides, Republican as well as Democratic campus. They point to recent cases of stalking by Democratic enthusiasts of Republican officials like DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, Senator Ted Cruz, Senator Mitch McConnell, Press Secretary Sarah Sanders, etc. in public places. They also point to some Democratic elected officials like Congresswoman Maxine Waters openly trading insults with Republicans and encouraging her supporters to harass public officials. Fact of the matter is that there is vitriol on both extreme of American political spectrum.
And such turbulent times requires effective and assertive national leadership that should rise above partisan politics to unite the people bring country together. It can’t be just about winning a political contest as President keeps repeating. It is rather about installing confidence and sense of reliability in the character of the leadership above and beyond the self. Under such circumstance when American leadership is paralyzed with a highly charged, polarized and divisive self-serving agenda, people have to take charge of their own destiny in a democracy. As America goes to vote on November 6th, it should reject the politics of hate, division and demonization. It should focus on the message of togetherness, cohesiveness and social unity. Political differences and diversity does not mean being unpatriotic. It simply meaning being an alternative philosophy. In a democracy, there is real need to accommodate the “different”, not ignore or vilify it.
As Hindus, we strongly denounce all such crimes which are more and more frequently targeting one group or another. We mourn the loss of the lives of these innocent people as they peacefully celebrated their culture in their place of worship. We also grieve for the families and friends of those who lost their lives as well as the police officers who were injured in performing their duties.
senseless deaths and injuries of all. The Hindu American community knows what it is like to be victim of hate crimes and terrorism. We relate to the Jewish community in their time of pain and anguish. We call upon everyone to accept and respect differences. The atmosphere of hate, including the anti-Semitism shown this weekend, that is contrary to the American and Hindu-American traditions, must be denounced.

Additionally, Vijay has been involved with similar U.S. initiatives, such as the American India Foundation. Agreement Approved for Funeral, Interment of Historic Remains
S
UGAR LAND, TX - Sugar Land City Council recently approved an interlocal agreement with Fort Bend Independent School district to honor and preserve the memory of victims of the convict lease prison system. The agreement builds on the ongoing work of the City Manager's Task Force on the Convict Lease Memorial, a group created to make a recommendation on the interment, memorialization and ceremonial funeral details of historical remains discovered on property owned by Fort Bend ISD. The task force - a diverse group of community members, academics, scientists, activists and other stakeholders - researched various burial options throughout Texas and preferred reburial at the school district's James Reese Career and Technical Education Center, the construction site where the human remains were discovered in an unmarked cemetery on Feb. 19. The task force was informed that legal restrictions prevent Fort Bend ISD from reburying the remains and maintaining a cemetery on school district property, so their second option was reinterment at the city of Sugar Land's Old Imperial Prison Farm Cemetery, 6440 Easton Ave. Sugar Land's interlocal agreement with Fort Bend ISD specifies the relocation and interment of the historical remains at the city's cemetery. The task force will continue to provide input and advice to the city on matters related to pursing DNA analysis, memorialization, funeral details and educational awareness. The land owned by the city was proactively acquired in 2006 to pre-
serve and protect the Old Imperial Prison Farm Cemetery and surrounding land. The property comprised just over 63 acres and has been designated as parkland -- no development has occurred on the city's site. The action taken by the city ensured that the cemetery would not suffer the same fate as many others across the country that have been neglected, forgotten and disappeared into history. Should park development occur in the future, the city will work with the Texas Historical Commission and comply with all state antiquities laws and regulations governing archeological preservation prior to development. Additionally, the city will continue its coordination with the Sugar Land Heritage Foundation - which was established by the city to preserve and document the community's rich history - including the Old Imperial Prison Farm Cemetery on the city's property. In 2016, the city's cemetery was designated a state historical site. An official marker designating the history of the cemetery and prison was installed; this city-led initiative was the result of more than a year of extensive research and coordination with the Fort Bend Historical Commission and the Texas Historical Commission. The city's cemetery contains the remains of prisoners and guards who died from 1912-1942 at the Texas Department of Corrections' Central Prison Unit. Learn about the city's cemetery and efforts to preserve, protect and honor the area's past, visit www.sugarlandtx.gov/ImperialFarmCemetery. OUSTON (10/30/2018) -Early voting of the 2018 mid-term general election is ending this Friday Nov 2nd. A historical high voter turnout is happening across the nation. More than half million people have voted in Harris County as of Oct 29th. For Asian Americans, a record high number of them are also turning out to vote. In Harris County, approximately 14% East Asian voters have already voted in the first week of the Early Voting. In Fort Bend County, which has the highest Asian American population in the state, approximately 30% of the Hindu and 25% of the Muslim voters have already casted the ballot.
This is a truly a historical moment for all the minority groups, in response to the recent anti-immigrant and white nationalist movement led by Trump himself, who came to Houston on the 1st day of the Early Voting and threatened to take away naturalized citizenship early this week. Another reason for this high Asian American voter turn out also comes from a record-breaking high number of Asian American candidates in the Greater Houston Area. There are 15 of them in total, 13 are on the Democratic side, 8 are from Indian and southeast Asian origin. They are running for positions from U.S. Congress, Texas Supreme Court judges, to state representatives, and district judges. Rep. Gene Wu, and Rep. Hubert Vo, who are the only Asian American Representatives in the Houston Area as the candidates, are asking for the unison of the minority communities in this difficult political time. Rep. Gene Wu said with Houston becoming the most diverse cities in the nation, yet Asian Americans have no voice and therefore most vulnerable under the Republican control. “In this election, Asian Americans, must come out to vote, and vote for Democrats who are the candidates and who are standing up for us. If we don’t vote, we are being put on the chopping board!” Rep. Gene Wu alerted the voters. It is very apparent from the contrast between the candidates on two sides, which side has more, stronger and qualified people. Some of these candidates may not have Asian-sounding names,

and may be difficult to pick from the long ballot. The easiest way to vote for them is to go by Straight Party for the Democrats, as Rep. Gene Wu said, so all of these candidates names will be all included. This is the last Mid-term election you can vote for the Straight Party as this option is being removed in 2020 in Texas.
voter turnout is also expected on that day. To avoid longwaiting line and risk of not being able to vote, people should go out to vote early, with polls opening 7am-7pm. You can vote in all locations within Harris county during early voting. On the Election Day, you can only vote within the precinct of your voter registration.
Election day will be on Tuesday, Nov 6th, the last day of voting. A very high

SKCON of Houston invites you to yet another week of festivities in November. Diwali, the festival of lights will be celebrated on Thursday, Nov 7 and Govardhana puja (Annakut), on the 8th of November, both programs starting at 6 PM. Sunday, November 11th marks the disappearance day of Srila Prabhupada, Founder-Acharya of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), with public program starting at 5 PM. Diwali or Dipavali translates to “garland of lights” in Sanskrit. The festival is a celebration of victory of good over evil that commemorates Lord Rama’s return to His kingdom after defeating the evil King Ravana. The main highlight of this festival- candle light aarti - that is offered to Their Lordships,
where hundreds of candles adorn the altar, is a visual treat that’s not to be missed. Govardhan Puja is celebrated the day after Diwali. According to Srimad Bhagavatam, in Dwapara Yuga, when Lord Krishna observed that residents of Vrindavan were preparing a sacrifice to please Lord Indra, He suggested that they should worship Govardhana Hill instead, as it provides sustenance to the villagers. Accordingly, devotees prepare a variety of foodstuff with grains, butter, clarified butter, milk to offer to Govardhana Hill. The food is stacked in the form of a small hill and hence the name “Annakuta”. It is mentioned in the scriptures that the Supreme Lord entered Govardhana and personally accepted all the offerings of the villagers. Another exec out amid sex harassment tension at Google
S
AN FRANCISCO | AFP | 10/31/2018 - Google parent Alphabet on Wednesday confirmed that an executive accused of sexual harassment left the company without an exit package as tension over its handling of such matters heightened. Word that Rich DeVaul, a director at X lab devoted to “moonshots” such as internet service from balloons, was out came with reports that women employees were trying to organize a walk-out on Thursday to protest lenient handling of sexual misconduct in the workplace. Alphabet declined to share any details about DeVaul’s departure from the company on Tuesday. Google chief executive Sundar Pichai sent a message to employees late Tuesday, a copy of which was posted online by technology news website Ars Technica.
Pichai said he has heard from many employees on the subject of inappropriate behavior at work and was “deeply sorry for the past actions and the pain they have caused employees.” “As CEO, it’s been personally important to me that we take a much harder line on inappropriate behavior,” Pichai said in the message. He said anew that Google had fired 48 employees in the past two years -- including 13 senior executives -- as a result of sexual harassment allegations. Pichai has met with Google employees about the issue since The New York Times reported last week that a senior Google employee, Android creator Andy Rubin, received an exit package worth $90 million as he faced allegations of misconduct, and that Google had covered up other claims of sexual harassment.

Mumbai-set “Selection Day” is a story of cricket and corruption based on the novel of the same name by Booker Prize winning author Aravind Adiga (“White Tiger”). “Selection Day” will be produced in partnership with Seven Stories, the U.K. based production company of filmmakers Sharon Maguire (“Bridget Jones’ Baby”) and Anand Tucker (“Leap Year”). It is part of the ALL3Media group. They shouldn’t speculate about anyone’s personal life. But people have freedom to talk about anything, so let them talk. I have been working in this industry for 22 years, so I know which thing I have to take seriously and which are things I have to ignore.” In Jack & Dil, Arbaaz plays a possessive husband who hires a detective (Amit Sadh) to keep an eye on his wife, played by Sonal Chauhan. Irrfan Khan reportedly returning to India after Diwali post cancer treatment in London
Hollywood women push to get out vote in US
Irrfan Khan will reportedly return to India following a long stint abroad in London, where he was receiving treatment for cancer.
I
rrfan Khan is expected to return to India after a lengthy stint abroad, where he was getting treatment for a rare form of cancer. Irrfan’s spokesperson, neither confirming nor denying that the actor is returning to begin work on Hindi Medium 2, said that the actor could be back home after Diwali. “The story floating about Irrfan starting Hindi Medium 2 shoot in December are all based on speculations. However there is a possibility of him returning to India after Diwali,” the spokesperson said. Irrfan had announced in March that he had been diagnosed with neuroendocrine tumour. He then left for London to undergo treatment, and backed out of promoting his film Karwaan, and appearing in the Amazon series Gormint. In June, Irrfan provided an update about his health in an interview to a tabloid. “This realisation made me submit, surrender and trust, irrespective of the outcome, irrespective of where this takes me,

My confidence in the intelligence of the cosmos became absolute.

EW YORK | AFP | Several of Hollywood’s most famous female faces, including Oscar winners Cher, Julianne Moore and Jodie Foster, have joined forces for a TV spot to urge Americans to vote in the November 6 midterm elections. The minute-long video, produced by billionaire businessman Michael Bloomberg and directed by Foster, was released Tuesday -- exactly one week before voters head to the polls. “What matters to you?” Cher asks in the spot. “Grey’s Anatomy” star Ellen Pompeo talks about school shootings, comedian Lily Tomlin speaks about “basic human rights” and Moore mentions “freedom of speech.” None of the women featured in the ad mention President Donald Trump by name, but the ad clearly seems to be calling for change. At stake on November 6 is
Actress Laverne Cox also participated in the political ad control of Congress, which is currently held by Trump’s Republican Party. All 435 seats in the House of Representatives are up for grabs, along with about a third of Senate seats. Other celebrities featured in the ad include transgender actress Laverne Cox, “Crazy Rich Asians” star Constance Wu and Felicity Huffman of “Desperate
Housewives” fame. Deaf Oscar-winning actress Marlee Matlin signs the word “Vote.” The video was funded by Independence USA PAC, a political action committee launched by Bloomberg, a former mayor of New York who is pushing for Democrats to be elected this year.

hugs of Hindostan, Yash Raj Films’ upcoming offering has already caused quite a stir with its impressive star cast and gigantic budget. Fans can now book their tickets well in advance from 3 November, according to trade analysts. The early bookings will open at multiplexes and single screen cinema halls across the country. According to trade analysts, Thugs of Hindostan will be released across more

It was previously reported that the tickets for Thugs of Hindostan have been priced at least 10 percent higher than those of Ranbir Kapoor-starrer Sanju, in order to milk the lucrative Diwali release window. Directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya, the
film will see Aamir Khan and Amitabh Bachchan share the screen space for the first time. Katrina Kaif, Fatima Sana Shaikh and Lloyd Owen are also part of the film. The plot is based on Philip Meadows Taylor’s 1839 novel Confessions of a Thug, which deals with a thug called Ameer Ali, whose gang of thugs posed a dangerous challenge to the British Empire in India during the early 1800s. Trump steps up anti-immigrant offensive ahead of US midterm vote by W.G. Dunlop

W
ASHINGTON | AFP | 10/31/2018 US President Donald Trump on Wednesday said he would fight all the way to the Supreme Court to end a constitutional guarantee of citizenship for people born on US soil, stepping up his antiimmigrant offensive in the final stretch before key midterm elections.
Trump also asserted that birthright citizenship “is not covered by the 14th Amendment because of the words ‘subject to the jurisdiction thereof.’” That phrase traditionally has been interpreted as meaning people who have immunity from US law such as children born to foreign diplomats in the United States.
With control of Congress at stake in the November 6 vote, Trump has sought to energize his base by portraying migrants as a national security threat, ordering thousands of soldiers to the southern border and pressuring Mexico to halt groups of migrants headed for the US. In the latest twist, he has vowed to eliminate the automatic right to citizenship of persons born in the United States, long guaranteed -- with few exceptions -- under the 14th Amendment to the US Constitution. “So-called Birthright Citizenship, which costs our Coun-

Youth Leadership Development Program students visit Houston Food Bank
Brian Greene, CEO, Houston Food Bank addressing the students. by Shreya Lakshman
T
he Importance of Leadership On October 20th, 2018 the class of 2018 to 2019 of the Youth Leadership Development Program was able to take a small tour inside the Houston Food Bank (HFB) and see the many different areas of the organization. Not only did the class take a tour, but they also had the privilege to meet and listen to CEO of HFB, Brian Greene’s presentation regarding leadership, courage, and non-profit organizations. HFB is a non-profit organization that gets many volunteers a day to participate who help pack food and send it out to people who are in need. Since 2005, Brian Greene has led the organization towards great success and now the HFB is the largest food bank in the country. To start off his presentation, Mr. Greene said, “Courage is the most important virtue.” It takes a lot of moral courage to become the best leader
in a company or organization. There are two types of courage: physical courage and moral courage. Too many people, physical courage might seem rare but it is actually moral courage that is not common. We have the immediate instinct to jump into a lake to save someone from drowning but we don’t have the confidence to stand up and declare when something is wrong. In a non- profit organization like the HFB, the leader of any branch must be able to stand in front of his employees and tell them that the company is doing something wrong only then the company can improve. Non- profit organizations don’t have customers to tell them that their organization needs to improve. The employees and the leader have to realize their mistakes and that takes a great amount of moral courage. With a strong moral compass, people can easily solve societal problems and can
YLDP batch of 2018 with Brian Greene at the Houston Food Bank during thier visit. achieve greater success based on honesty and integrity. Brian Greene mentioned that in order to become an effective leader of an organization or a company, you must have many skills such as communication skills and financial skills. He elaborated on how the leader of the organization must plan according to what people will enjoy doing. If an organization like a food bank plans activities that volunteers won’t enjoy, then fewer volunteers will show up and the organization won’t succeed. A key point that Mr. Greene emphasized was that a company’s effect on the outside world and the people in need is more important than obtaining a great amount of money. In the end, the long-term effect on society by the non-profit organizations is important to

that other companies fail to do on a daily basis. Because of organizations like the HFB, many
people around the world are able to live a long and healthy life.
Gun violence sends 75,000 US youths to emergency rooms in 9 yrs: study
In proportion to the US population of people under 18, researchers found that about 11 children per 100,000 were sent to emergency rooms due to gunshot wounds
W
A S H I N G TON | AFP | 10/29/2018 Some 75,000 youths under the age of 18 were sent to US emergency rooms due to gun violence from 2006 to 2014, at a cost of some $2.5 billion, researchers said Monday. You can see the toll of gun violence on America’s children by studying hospital records from around the country. It’s large, and it appears to be rising. Researchers from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine published their results Monday in the journal. They tallied more than 75,000 children who were sent to ERs seeking treatment for gun-related injuries between the beginning of 2006 and the end of 2014. Then they adjusted the data to make it representative of the nation as a whole. For every 100,000 Americans under the age of 18, 11.3 went to a hospital emergency room after being shot.
This figure represents the average incidence of firearm-related ER visits over the nine years of the study. The average age of these gunshot victims was 14.8 years, and the overwhelming majority, 86.2 percent, were male. Overall, 6 percent of pediatric shooting victims who came to the ER died of their injuries, the researchers found. Nearly half — 49 percent — of the young patients brought to hospital emergency departments with gun-related injuries were shot during intentional assaults. Another 39 percent of patients were victims of accidents involving firearms, and 2 percent attempted suicide with a gun. American kids faced the highest risk of a serious firearm injury at the start of the study period, with 15.1 out of every 100,000 minors seeking ER treatment for a gunshot wound in 2006. That figure fell steadily until 2011, when 9.5 out of every 100,000 minors went to the
ER after being shot. After rising slightly in 2012, the incidence of gunrelated trips to the emergency room bottomed out in 2013 at 7.5 cases per 100,000 kids. It then jumped back to 10.1 cases per 100,000 in 2014. This trend was most pronounced for boys. Throughout the study period, boys were at least five times more likely than girls to require emergency room treatment for a gun-inflicted wound. The incidence of these injuries among boys was 26.1 per 100,000 in 2006, then fell to 12.3 per 100,000 in 2013 before rising back to 16.5 per 100,000 in 2014. The incidence for girls remained between 2.4 and 4 cases per 100,000 throughout the nine years of the study. The group that experienced the greatest burden of gun-related injuries was young men between the ages of 15 and 17.

mong other organs eyes are affected first if one has diabetes and glaucoma is a common challenge one faces. Let us understand from the article from aar.org.
Primary open-angle glaucoma Primary open-angle glaucoma This is the most common type of glaucoma. It happens gradually, where the eye does not drain fluid as well as it should (like a clogged drain). As a result, eye pressure builds and starts to damage the optic nerve. This type of glaucoma is painless and causes no vision changes at first. Irritable Bowel Syndrome is called IBS-D. A
bdominal pain? Diarrhea? An estimated 16 million Americans live with a type of irritable bowel syndrome called IBS-D (the D stands for diarrhea), and it affects both men and women almost equally. However, only 30 percent of individuals consult a physician about their symptoms. Why is that? “People who experience symptoms of IBS-D can feel like their symptoms are not severe enough to seek medical attention or that there isn’t anything doctors can do to help,” says Dr. Howard Franklin, vice president of medical affairs and strategy at Salix Pharmaceuticals. “But doctors want to hear about everything you are feeling so they can determine the underlying cause of your discomfort and help you find a treatment plan that is right for you.” A closer look at IBS-D Symptoms of IBS-D, which are different in everyone, include stomach pain and cramping, frequent diarrhea, gas, bloating and an urgency to use the bathroom. Many people experience feeling frustrated, missing out on activities because of symptoms and avoid-
ing situations where there is no bathroom nearby. IBS-D can be diagnosed based on symptom history, including: • Abdominal pain at least one day a week during the last three months • More than 25 percent of bowel movements are loose or watery (diarrhea), and less than 25 percent are hard or lumpy (constipation) • Symptoms started at least six months ago What could be the cause? While the exact cause of IBSD is unknown, and people may have IBS for more than one reason, an imbalance in the usual numbers and proportions of normally healthy bacteria in the digestive system (the gut microbiota) has been found in many people with IBS-D. The microbiota help digest and absorb food and work with the immune system as a barrier against other microorganisms that can cause disease. “One study of 109 patients with IBS showed that 73 percent had an imbalance in their gut microbiota, compared with only 16 percent of healthy people,” says Dr. Franklin. “Other potential reasons may include
previous gastrointestinal infection or food poisoning, communication problems between the brain and digestive system, a family history of IBS and other causes.” Treatment options There is currently no cure, but there are treatments that can help with the symptoms of IBS-D. Lifestyle changes, such as eliminating certain foods and increasing exercise, could help. “Studies have shown that between 50 and 70 percent of patients failed to respond to either fiber or antispasmodics as a treatment therapy,” says Dr. Franklin. “There are different types of prescription treatments for IBS-D. If one isn’t working, it’s important that patients ask their healthcare professional about trying a different medicine to find what treatment is right for them.” For more information, visit IBSDUpClose.com. If you’re experiencing symptoms of IBS-D, don’t be afraid to talk to your doctor about all of them. This is the first step toward helping find a treatment plan and getting relief. -(StatePoint)
Some people can have optic nerves that are sensitive to normal eye pressure. This means their risk of getting glaucoma is higher than normal. Regular eye exams are important to find early signs of damage to their optic nerve. Angle-closure glaucoma (also called “closed-angle glaucoma” or “narrow-angle glaucoma”) This type happens when someone’s iris is very close to the drainage angle in their eye. The iris can end up blocking the drainage angle. You can think of it like a piece of paper sliding over a sink drain. When the drainage angle gets completely blocked, eye pressure rises very quickly. Ideal timing between pregnancies is at least one year: study

L
et Them Smile Again’s medical relief and recovery mission to help the flood-affected people of Kerala, came to a successful close after a hectic ten days that covered the length and breadth of the flood-affected state last month. The mission saw the team comprising of doctors, nurses and volunteers traveling to 16 different affected locations across the worst-affected areas of the state, where they treated over 3,200 patients, performed over 39 surgeries and handed out over 1,000 relief and food packs, all totally free of charge. The team, which included 30+ volunteers from the United States and over 150 from the local areas - which included volunteers and medical personnel from Madras Christian College and Pushpagiri Medical College, undertook a punishing schedule that saw them travel to camps early in the morning and continue working with patients and affected people till late at night. To cover such distances and reach so many people in such a short period of time, was an exercise in logistical and technical wizardry. “The goal of the entire mission was to be able to provide relief and the required medical treatment to as many of the worst hit flood victims as possible, and also to reach those who were not able to access medical treatment or receive aid,” said LTSA Chairman, John W. Varghese. “We have to thank our many sponsors, supporters, local civic and religious authorities as well as our selfless volunteers, for their untiring efforts that enabled the mission to be a grand success.” Let Them Smile Again’s mission certainly struck a chord and attracted strong support from the local Asian community in Texas and other parts

ASHINGTON | AFP | 10/29/2018 - Women who want to bear children in their 30s and 40s often face a dilemma regarding how much time to wait between pregnancies. Doctors often advise they wait 18 to 24 months. But pregnancy risks mount with age.
conception of the next one.
A study Monday in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), based on 150,000 pregnancies in Canada from 2004 to 2014, concludes that waiting less than a year between pregnancies raises the risks, regardless of a woman’s age.
These included stillbirth, infant death in the first year of life, low birth weight and prematurity, and affected about two percent of infants in the study.
After a year, however, there is little difference in risk. “The take-home message from the study is that closely spaced pregnancies have risks for women of all ages,” said study author Laura Schummers, a postdoctoral fellow at the University of British Columbia. Let Them Smile Again members aiding in the flood relief efforts in Kerala. of the country, with donations of both cash and kind pouring in . Organizers reported donations of over $40,000 within a short time of the mission being announced. Among the major donors included: National Association of Indian nurses of North America (NAINA), Indian American Nurses Association of Greater Houston (IANAGH), Parackal Charity International, South Indian US Chamber of Commerce, World Malayalee Council Houston Province, Alamo Travels among others. The mission began with the teams assembling at the home base of Kochi, from where they traveled to Paravur, Chirayam. Mallapally, TV Puram, Koipuram, Angadi, Ranni, Ranni Tribal Area, Adichupuzha Hill Tribal Area, Ezhikkad Colony, Kurichimuttom and other badly-hit regions that were difficult to reach for relief teams. The team members were up at the crack of dawn and work began as early as 6 am and sometimes went on till 9.30 in the evening, as the lines of people waiting to be attended to were often much more
than expected. Meanwhile the surgical team, were based in the George Mathen Memorial Hospital, Mallapally for an entire week, where they performed a series of free surgical procedures and interventions on needy patients drawn from the local area and neighbouring regions. After the medical camps were done with for the day, the team members also took time to visit over 10 orphanages and old age homes, where they had dinner with the residents and ministered to their needs, while giving a sympathetic ear to their woes. Let Them Smile Again were also glad to be able to contribute Rs. 100.000 towards the welfare of the fishermen, who played an invaluable role in rescuing flood victims from hard to access areas in the state. At the end of the ten days, it was a tired but happy team who said their goodbyes before making their way back to their home bases, replete with the sense of mission accomplished and satisfaction at being able to touch so many lives.
Millions with high blood sugar face TB risk
“We found that maternal risks were present for women 35 and older only, and not for younger women, whereas risks to the baby were present for women both aged 20 to 34 and women 35 and older. Risks were similar between 12 and 24 months, and “we saw a very small further reduction between 12 and 18 months,” Schummers told AFP. The interpregnancy interval was calculated as the amount of time between the birth of one child and the
people suffering from TB/diabetes. “This tells us even before a person develops diabetes, the risk of developing TB is higher,” Ajay Kumar, a research director at The International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease, who was not involved in the study, told AFP Friday. In some countries such as India, home to roughly a quarter of all tuberculosis cases, anyone found to be carrying TB must automatically be screened for diabetes, and vice versa. Kumar said the study showed that countries should also check patients with high blood sugar for tuberculosis. He said “millions” of people with elevated blood sugar could be at additional risk.
by Patrick GALEY
T
For infants, risks rose among closely timed pregnancies regardless of the mother’s age.
When pregnancy began six months after a birth, the risk of premature birth rose 59 percent compared to pregnancies timed to begin 18 months after a birth. Doctors in the United States typically urge women to wait at least 18 months between childbirth and pregnancy. The World Health Organization recommends at least 24 months. “Our findings indicate a shorter optimal interval than previously thought (12-24 months) for women of all ages,” concluded the study. “This finding may be reassuring, particularly for older women who must weigh the competing risks of increasing maternal age with longer interpregnancy intervals (including infertility and chromosomal anomalies) against the risks of short interpregnancy intervals.”
- ‘Perfect storm’ The link between diabetes and tuberculosis is known, though poorly understood. Diabetes slows the body’s natural defences, allowing TB the chance to develop. While TB infections and deaths have declined slightly in the last decade, type II diabetes has exploded. It is a potent risk: roughly one in four people on Earth carry the TB bacteria in their bodies, and the WHO says more than 450 million people worldwide are type II diabetic. Paul Jensen, director of policy and strategy at The Union, said the countries of greatest concern were those with a high latent TB rate and a growing diabetes problem: India, China, Pakistan and several southeast Asian countries. “We describe this issue in terms of a perfect storm -- economically developing, already a huge pool of latent TB infection and here you have this issue with diabetes escalating,” he told AFP.
he Hague, Netherlands | AFP | 10/26/2018 -Millions of people with high blood sugar may be at greater risk of tuberculosis than previously thought, scientists said Friday, warning that diabetes and TB could combine to create the “perfect storm” of disease.
Although TB is curable, the treatment regimen has historically been long, painful and come with significant side effects.
Tuberculosis, a severe infection caused by bacteria in the lungs, kills almost as many people each year as HIV/ AIDS and malaria combined.
“If you have TB and diabetes at the same time, it makes treatment even more complicated,” Jensen said. “You’re more likely to get TB again in the future and you’re more likely to die.”
In 2017 nearly 10 million people developed TB, according to the World Health Organization, and experts are concerned that a global explosion in diabetes will put millions more at risk.
The global fight against tuberculosis has frequently focused on HIV/AIDS prevention, as that disease, like diabetes, increases TB risk.
New research unveiled this week at a global lung health conference in The Hague also suggests further cause for worry.
Both Jensen and Kumar said more needed to be done to protect people from TB caused by diabetes.
For the study, scientists at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine conducted blood tests on people living with tuberculosis and diabetes in four countries: South Africa, Romania, Indonesia and Peru.
“We saw what happened with TB and HIV in sub-Saharan Africa where HIV weakens the immune system and TB skyrocketed,” Jensen said.
They then tested people with TB and blood sugar levels that were high, but below the threshold for diabetes. They found that blood samples from those who did not have diabetes still contained molecules associated with
For women over 35, the risk of maternal complications was highest for pregnancies that began three, six or nine months following a prior birth.

This start-up, which created the Myo armband under the name Thalmic Labs a few years ago, concluded that the key to a practical and successful set of smart glasses was a combination of three characteristics simultaneously: a “normal” glasses look, an intuitive and non-distracting display, and a “different kind of company to make the above possible.” And thus, Focals by North were conceived.

How Mike Shinoda inspired a generation of hip-hop fans

inkin Park got me into rap music.” If you belong to a certain generation that came of age at the turn of the millennium, it’s a common statement and one that rings incredibly true for me. Linkin Park was my bridge into hip-hop. Now, at the age of 21, it’s the art form and culture that defines me as a human. But back when I was seven or eight, a biracial Asian kid from a quiet city, I would offer “rap is crap” platitudes, swearing my allegiance to rock while low-key enjoying 50 Cent songs “ironically.”
Within Linkin Park’s discography are collaborations with hip-hop’s underground legends: The Alchemist, Chali 2na, Pharoahe Monch, Roc Raida, Evidence, Aceyalone. Other names belonged to some of the genre’s most formidable figures: JAY-Z, Rakim, Pusha T, Black Thought, Bun B, Rick Rubin. Reanimation, the follow-up to Hybrid Theory that would become the fourth best-selling remix album of all time, was produced by Shinoda and littered with underground hip-hop icons, helping niche rap talent reach a deserved national audience. Philippines’ spruced up Boracay re-opens with new rules
T
he Philippines opened the doors Friday to a spruced up and newly regulated Boracay, its famous holiday island that was shuttered to mend decades of harm caused by unchecked tourism.

thousands of tourists during the May 1 Labour Day weekend will be a thing of the past. Tourism Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat said last week she hopes the new Boracay will be the start of a “culture of sustainable tourism” in the Philippines, adding other tourist destinations will be next. Tens of thousands of workers were left unemployed when the island’s
The white sand idyll was closed to visitors in April after President Rodrigo Duterte called it a “cesspool” tainted by raw sewage flowing from hotels and restaurants straight into the sea. But the re-christened resort has a slew of new rules that restrict boozing and smoking on the beach, limit the number of tourists and hotels, all while a renovation spree is ongoing. Photograph by Daniel Prakopcyk
The first time I heard “In the End,” my life changed. It was the first time I saw a rapper who looked kinda of like me; the first time I related to where a rapper was coming from; the first rapper I ever loved. My brother and I sat in front of a computer screen with AZLyrics loaded up and committed ourselves to sing along. Over a decade later, I’m writing about hip-hop, listening to every rap record that comes out, still committed. Mike Shinoda, the multitalented Linkin Park co-founder responsible for the band’s hip-hop inroads, could’ve easily done less. He was the first Asian American rapper to have a number-one album with Meteora. It’s studio album predecessor, Hybrid Theory, is the best-selling debut album of the 21st century, certified Diamond and then some in the United States. As the most successful Asian American hip-hop artist, he wouldn’t have had to be such a hip-hop head to attract a following. But it was that attraction to detail, that sensitivity to people’s issues, that willingness to uplift that made his work special. Mike Shinoda didn’t just get me into rap music; he showed me what rap music could be, who could participate in it, and how they could do so. He used his platform to introduce me to underground legends, to show me where hip-hop came from and how to stand up against the injustices that plague its communities. To invest in Mike Shinoda’s artistry was to receive a rap music education, as well as a sensitivity to the people that helped build it. Many of the people Shinoda’s work inspired ended up becoming hip-hop stars of their own: names like OG Maco, Machine Gun Kelly, and notably Lupe Fiasco. Long before Lupe had become one of the greatest lyricists in hip-hop history, Mike Shinoda was an inspiration for many reasons, not least of which are his talents as a lyricist. One of Shinoda’s most important verses, from the Minutes to Midnight standout “Hands Held High,” showcases his skillset from both a technical standpoint (“Jump in my mind, I summon the rhyme I’m dumpin’”) and a substantive one (“Like this war’s really just a different brand of war / Like it doesn’t cater to rich and abandon poor”). Shinoda was unafraid to make salient political points on behalf of his love for the communities that birthed him: the Japanese people in his blood, and the black people that influenced his music. These were key gestures; Shinoda took the children of Linkin Park, the kids that might not have ever been deeply exposed to hip-hop, and he showed them the way: “Here is what you should be paying attention to now.”
ative and callously unaware of its roots instead became beloved through their seeking to give back, to put on for the culture, and to give a voice to the oppressed. We’re a now full generation removed from Shinoda’s mainstream peak, and Asian Americans are struggling with authenticity more than ever. Awkwafina cannot breathe without Twitter users jumping on her for her accentuation. Rich Chigga, in dealing with heavy conversations of interchangeability and exploitation, changed his stage name to Rich Brian. 88rising has risen, but it’s hard to tell whether the creative company has truly found its footing within the culture or is still seen as an afterthought at best or a joke at worst. If ever any Asian American rappers needed inspiration on how to be themselves within the hip-hop landscape, they ought to look back to Shinoda. Here was a man of Asian descent checking all the boxes; using his platform to pay it backward and forwards to the culture and remaining authentic to his own life.
Among the first visitors to land just after dawn on Friday were first-timers attracted by the prospect of a cleaner, less crowded island. “When I saw pictures of tourists in Boracay lying like sardines in a can, I didn’t want to come here,” German visitor Josef Fuchs, 61, told AFP. “Now I expect to have a few good days here.” Once a quiet hideaway favoured by backpackers, the tiny island was transformed by overdevelopment into a mass destination seeing some two million visitors per year. Under the new regime, the beachfront is cleared of the masseuses, vendors, bonfires and even the builders of its famous photo-op sandcastles it was once crowded with. Buildings were bulldozed and businesses pushed back to create a 30-metre (98-foot) buffer zone from the waterline. Construction is everywhere with road repairs, hotels and resort renovations happening around the island. All water sports save for swimming are also banned for the time being, while Boracay’s three casinos have been permanently shut down in line with Duterte’s wishes.

(Photo © Jay Directo / AFP) Yet it was seeing up to 40,000 sun worshippers at peak times, with tourists spending $1 billion a year but also leaving mountains of garbage and an overflowing sewer system. - End of ‘ghost town’ Boracay The new rules say 19,200 tourists will be allowed on the island at any one time, with the government aiming to enforce that by controlling the number of available hotel rooms. Nearly 400 hotels and restaurants deemed to violate local environmental laws have already been ordered closed and airlines as well as ferries were told to restrict service to the area. Drinking and smoking are banned and the huge multi-day beach parties dubbed “LaBoracay” that drew tens of
tourism machine was deprived of visitors. “Life will go back to normal. We will have money and work again,” said Jorge Flores, 45, a hotel worker. “In the past six months, hotels here were like... a ghost town.” Other places in the region strained by mass tourism have also used closures as a tactic to protect the sites from destruction. Thai authorities announced in October that the glittering bay immortalised in the movie “The Beach” will be closed indefinitely to allow it to recover from the impact of hordes of tourists. - Relaxnews
But for all the accolades and earnings, and despite his having been one of the most influential artists of his generation, Mike Shinoda has never been showered with the collectivistic appreciation he deserves. So, I’ll give it a try.
The Louvre is the most popular European museum on Instagram
Mike Shinoda taught so many Asian Americans how to find a place in hiphop without exploiting it. He reached the summit of commercial achievements and remained focused on putting millions of people on to artists like Pharoahe Monch and Black Thought. His heart brought millions of people together, people of so many different backgrounds. His artistic work alerted many to the darkness of people’s lives, while his charity work alerted them to causes around the world. He inspired a wave of hip-hop stars, and in turn, a generation of fans. His ability to create an album from the ground up—from playing the instruments and writing the lyrics to producing the beats and drawing the cover art—proved to me that someone like me, that biracial Asian kid from a quiet city, could do it all.
ccording to a study conducted by Holidu, a vacation rental search engine, the Parisian museum tops a list of the most popular museums in Europe on Instagram, ahead of the Tate Modern in London and the Hermitage in Saint Petersburg.
I wasn’t even 10 when I fell in love with Linkin Park. I didn’t know anything about hip-hop; nobody in my family did. Mike’s verses on “In the End” were the first verses I ever memorized. His collaborations with Lupe Fiasco brought my attention to the rapper who would eventually become my favorite of all time. He showed me hip-hop, and then he showed me how to treat it and who to study within it. Over a decade later, I can’t imagine what my life would be like without it. Thank you, Mike. - DJbooth.com

f the 25 companies on HBJ’s list of the largest employers in The Woodlands and Conroe, energy companies represent 44 percent of the list. One of the energy companies on the list is The Woodlands-based Strike LLC, which has around 400 employees at his headquarters at 1800 Hughes Landing Blvd. The pipeline services company is being acquired by Houstonbased Sentinel Energy Services Inc. (Nasdaq: STNL and STNLW), which is an energyfocused special purpose acquisition company. The deal is expected to close in the first quarter of 2019, and Sentinel will be renamed Strike Inc., which is expected to trade on the New York Stock Exchange under the new ticker symbol “STRK.” Current Strike CEO Steve Pate will continue to lead the new business with his existing management team. HBJ’s list of the largest employers in The Woodlands and Conroe published in the Oct. 26 weekly edition in the Geographic Spotlight: The Woodlands special section. The section also highlighted the largest bank branches in Montgomery County, the most expensive home sales so far this year in The Woodlands, and thirdquarter data of the latest multifamily sales in The Woodlands and Conroe.
“When we started out, Casey wasn’t married and wasn’t dating anyone,” says Arthur. “So the original project brief was less about bedrooms and bathrooms, and more about the character of the home. Specifically, the shape. Casey had an image in his mind of a house he had photographed early in his career in a wooded area of Maine. The house was a basic shape—as one would draw as a child—just a box with a gabled roof.”
Out of the Woodlands/Conroe South, Tomball/Spring and Conroe North/ Montgomery submarkets, Transwestern reported the highest occupancy in Conroe North/ Montgomery with 93.4 percent. Meanwhile, Tomball/ Spring has the most units under construction with 682. The Plantation at The Woodlands was sold in the third quarter to Waterton Associates LLC. The home’s simple gabled shape is emphasized by the use of burnished stucco on all sides.
That simple gabled shape persisted even after Casey began dating Sarah—who is now his wife—and the plan of the home shifted from a modest two-bedroom to a two-story with three bedrooms.

“With the client as our editor, we adhered to that vision of simplicity,” notes Arthur of the 1,900-square-foot home. “The result is a monolithic dark volume with carefully placed punched openings.” The restrained design approach was also inspired by the minimalist architecture of Marfa, a small West Texas town where—at the same time Arthur and Annie-Laurie were designing the house—Casey had been shooting interiors for his first photography book, Marfa Modern. Bathed in natural light and dressed in natural materials, the house radiates warmth and character with carefully selected furnishings that mix designer and salvaged pieces. “As architects, we’re always getting in our own way by trying to show off and over complicate things for no reason,”
Woodforest National Bank at 1330 Lake Robbins Drive in The Woodlands has the most deposits for a single bank branch in Montgomery County, according to data as of June 30, 2018, from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. The bank branch has $1.8 billion in deposits, per the FDIC. Overall, Woodforest National Bank has $4.038 billion in local deposits in the Houston-Sugar Land-Woodlands metro area as of June 30, 2018, according to the FDIC.
At the time, Arthur was still working for his father’s firm at Furman & Keil Architects and had yet to start his own practice. Yet Casey’s belief in Arthur’s talent helped spur the young architect to leave his job and—with his wife, AnnieLaurie Grabiel—launch Side Angle Side, an Austin–based architectural practice that remembers Casa Casey as their first project.
The clawfoot tub was a salvaged find, while reclaimed wood was used for the shelving. Arthur admits. “This project required us to step aside and surrender to the simplicity of it. We actually redesigned the

20 February to 20 Mar Sharing your warm, sunny nature will bring you better health. With a focus on your relationship zone, it’s time to work in tandem with your partner to create a routine you can do together.
