Carolyn Farb started as a volunteer at the Texas Children’s Hospital. “I have a soft heart,” she said, “so I worked at the snack bar so I could help parents and families and take them around,” and that’s how it began. Family-Friendly Workplace Policies Are Not Frills - They’re Basic Needs
That’s the subject of the ďŹ rst White House Summit on Working Families, which is taking place today. We’re bringing together business leaders and workers to talk about the challenges that working parents face every day and how we can address them. Take exibility -- the ability to take a few hours off for a school play or to work from home when your kid is sick. Most workers want it, but not enough of them have it -- even though studies show that exibility makes workers happier and helps companies lower turnover and raise productivity.
VoiceofAsiaOnline.com Online Editor:
s President, my top priority is rebuilding an economy where everybody who works hard has the chance to get ahead.
Take paid family leave. Many jobs don’t offer adequate leave to care for a new baby or an ailing parent, so workers can’t afford to be there when their families need them the most. And the United States is the only developed country in the world without paid maternity leave. Take childcare. Most working families I know can’t afford thousands a year for childcare, but often, that’s what it costs. I recently got a letter from a woman in Minnesota whose kids’ preschool is so expensive it costs more every month than her mortgage. And take the minimum wage. Nearly 28 million Americans would beneďŹ t if we raised the minimum wage to $10.10. And we’re not just talking about young people on their ďŹ rst job -the average worker who would beneďŹ t from an increase is 35 years old. Many have kids. And a majority are women. Right now, many full-time minimumwage workers aren’t even making enough to keep their kids out of poverty. Family leave, childcare, exibility and a decent wage aren’t frills. They’re basic needs. They shouldn’t be bonuses -- they should be the bottom line.
Barack Obama, 44th President of the United States. Photo Courtesy: Mandel Ngan (Getty Images). that their families will pay the price. Nearly half of all working parents surveyed say they’ve chosen to turn down a job not because they didn’t want it, but because it would be too hard on their families. When that many members of our workforce are forced to choose between a job and their family, something’s wrong.
ity to work, but are held back by one obstacle or another. It’s our job to remove those obstacles. That’s what supporting working families is all about.
Today, I’ll sign a Presidential Memorandum directing every agency in the federal government to expand access to exible work schedules, and giving employees the right to request them. I’m calling on Congress to pass the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act, because too many pregnant workers are forced to choose between their health

I take this personally -- as the son and grandson of some strong women who worked hard to support my sister and me; as the husband of a brilliant woman who struggled to balance work and raising our young ladies when my job often kept me away; and as the father of two beautiful girls, whom I want to be there for as much as I possibly can -- and whom I hope will be able to have families and careers of their own one day.
I’ll work with anyone -Democrats or Republicans -- to increase opportunity for American workers. But in this year of action, whenever I can act on my own, I will.

And to help parents trying to get ahead, I’m directing my Secretary of Labor to invest $25 million in helping people who want to enroll in job-training programs, but don’t currently have access to the childcare they need to do it.
But all Americans should get to beneďŹ t from these policies. That’s why we need to see some action here in Washington.
And there’s a bigger economic case here, too. The strength of our economy rests on whether we’re getting the most out of all of our nation’s talent -- whether we’re making it possible for all our citizens to contribute to our growth and prosperity. That’s the key to staying competitive in the global economy. Right now, we’re leaving too many people on the sidelines who have the desire and the capac-
Parents who work full-time should earn enough to pay the bills and go to work every day knowing that their kids are in good hands. Workers who give their all should know that if they need some exibility, they can have it -- because their employers understand that it’s hard to be productive when you’ve got a sick kid at home or a childcare crisis. And talented, hard-working people should be able to say yes to a great new opportunity without worrying
and their job. They can get ďŹ red for taking too many bathroom breaks, or forced on unpaid leave just for being pregnant. It’s inhumane, and it needs to stop.
States are getting on board, too. California, Rhode Island and New Jersey give workers paid family leave. Connecticut offers paid sick days. So does New York City. Since I asked Congress to raise the minimum wage last year, 13 states have taken steps to raise it on their own.
Some businesses are realizing that family-friendly policies are a good business practice, because they help build loyalty and inspire workers to go the extra mile. JetBlue offers a exible work-from-home plan for its customer-service representatives. Google increased its paid parental leave to ďŹ ve months -and the rate of women leaving the company decreased by half. Cisco lets their employees telecommute as needed, which they estimate saves them over $275 million every year.

Richard M. Alderman Interim Dean of the Law Center
Washington Redskins can continue to use their name Q. I understand that the Washington Redskin’s trademark registration has been cancelled. Does that mean they have to change their name? A. Last week, the United States Patent and Trademark Office issued a decision to cancel the “Redskins” trademark registration because it is “disparaging to Native Americans.” This decision, however, will have no immediate effect on the team’s use of the name or its trademark protection for several reasons. First, this is merely the decision of an appeals board, and was decided by a vote of 2-1. The decision will now be appealed through the courts. Until the appeal is final, which could take years, the registration remains enforceable. This also is the second time there has been such a ruling, and after many years of appeals the earlier ruling was reversed. Second, trademark Protection does not depend on a federal registration. A trademark arises under our “common law,” and can be enforced even if it is not registered, or the registration is cancelled. It is sometimes more difficult to enforce if not registered, but anyone who tried to use the term “Redskins” will face a legal challenge from the Washington Redskins regardless of whether their registration is cancelled. The Redskins will continue to have trademark protection, even if the registration is cancelled. The bottom line is that this is an important decision, but more for its affect in the court of public opinion than in a court of law. Q. I bought a used car from a private individual. He told me it was in great shape and had no problems. In fact, it is a lemon that needs $3,000 of repairs. Do I have any legal rights? Will the lemon law help? A. First, the bad news. The Texas Lemon Law applies to only new cars. Now the good news, the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act, our state’s consumer protection law, applies to anyone selling anything. In other words, when it comes to buying a used car you have the same legal rights regardless of the nature of the seller. Under the Deceptive Trade Practices, commonly called the DTPA, a seller is responsible if he misleads or deceives you, or fails to make material disclosures. In my opinion, if the seller told you the car was in “great shape,” and it is not, he has made a misrepresentation under this law. He also would be liable if he knew that the car needed major repair work and did not tell you. If you are successful under the DTPA, you are entitled to your economic damages, either the difference in value between what you paid and what it is worth or the cost of repair. You also could get up to three times your damages if you show that the seller acted “knowingly.” I suggest you speak with the seller and try to work something out. Perhaps he will give you the money for repairs or a refund. If he refuses, let him know you know about this law. If that still doesn’t work, try justice court. Q. I am moving out of my apartment. I know that under Texas law, a landlord cannot deduct from a security deposit for “ordinary wear and tear.” What is ordinary wear and tear? Does the statute have a definition? A. I have been surprised by how many people have asked this same question. As you understand, under the Texas Security Deposit Law, a landlord may not deduct from a security deposit for damage caused by ordinary wear and tear. The statute, however, does not define this term. Therefore, it is left to courts and juries to determine what it means. Basically, ordinary wear and tear is the damage that occurs through ordinary use by a tenant. For example, tenants ordinarily walk on carpets, and when they do, the carpet ordinarily gets worn and dirty. That dirt and wear is “ordinary.” On the other hand, tenants do not ordinarily spill bottles of wine and that damage would not be ordinary wear and tear. The bottom line is that a landlord may not deduct from a security deposit for the damage that he should expect an ordinary tenant to cause. For more information about your rights as a tenant, check out the landlord tenant material on my website listed below. Do you want to know more about your legal rights? Further Dr. Sethi reported that 530,000 new cases of cancers were recorded around the world each year of which 86% were from the developing countries. “Out of this 120,000 -125,000 are from India,” he said. In the US it is around 12,000, the difference is over ten times between the two countries, he pointed out. Lack of prevention and screening program are major contributors. Even the mortality rates worldwide the numbers are 50% -55% and in the US 33% out of the 12,000 patients diagnosed each year in the US, 4000 die. The mean age at the time it is diagnosed is 48 years. At 20years of age it starts shooting up and peaks at around 55yrs – 65yrs of age and then the incidence drops. The curve is similar in the Asian and developing countries. Speaking of the risk factors he said 99.7% of all cervical cancer have been detect with the HPV (Human papilloma Virus) infection. HPV is sexually transmitted diseases. Almost 50% of all sexually active

women all over the world are prone to this infection at some point in their life. In most cases it goes away on its own. But in 10% of the women who will have persistent infection, the higher risk at developing this type of cancer Dr. Sethi explained. Second panelist Dr. Rachna Bhala is a practicing OBGYN in Sygar Land. She is originally from Rajastan, Udaipur (India) completed her PG in Obstetrics and Gynecology there. Currently she is working under Methodist Hospital System. Cervical cancer known to be caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) infection is one of the few preventable cancers with vaccination. Speaking on Screening and Prevention for cervical cancer, Dr. Bhalla said the most advanced method was the vaccine for HPV introduced in last ten years for females and even males as they are responsible for contributing to this sexually transmitted disease. 50-70% of women that are sexually active have been exposed to HPV. Regular Pap smear tests are known reduce the numbers. Cervical cancer is the cancer of the
reproductive tract. Most women brush it as something insignificant. It may start with bleeding and abnormal discharge. “That’s where the prevention and pap smear comes into play,” Dr. Bhala said. “Some patients say that they have not been sexually active for fifteen years or so or I’m menopausal,” but what they are unaware is that may have caused 40 years ago but it is just manifesting today. “There are many different types but we don’t worry about low risk HPV most women mange to get rid of them if their health is good, with good immunity and are well nourished. Even in the higher risk It can go away in two years but sometimes it persists and in 10% of the women,: she explained. She also gave a word of caution on being aware if your partner has other sexual partners. Well I only have one partner. Please be aware how many partners he has. Now that the vaccine is used to treat men as well, men should also be asking he same question. Oral contraceptives are steroid medication and use of it can suppress your immunity putting you at risk for the disease. Smoking runs immunity down and in-
creases the risk factor. Speak to your daughters and sons and let them know that the late onset of sexual activity reduces the risk , maintain a healthy diet and life style, knowing your partners sexual activities, practice safe sex. Also, getting the vaccine before the beginning of any sexually activity prevents cervical cancer. Last panelist Dr. Terri Pustilnik spoke of the Diagnosis and methods of treatment of Cervical Cancer. Known symptoms are unreasonable weight loss; abnormal pap smears. Pap smears are not 100% accurate Dr. Terri said and, “About 55% of Pap smear test are going to miss the cancer,” she said. “Colposcopy with a biopsy is he gold standard to know whether there is a cancer or not,” she pointed out. CT Scan and Pet Scan are other effective ways to detect cervical cancers early on although a combination of two together gives us twice as much information. Dr. Pustilnik clarified that treatment depends on the stage in which the cancer is. In the early stages surgery could be the option while in the later stages it radiation and chemotherapy or maybe a combination of both could be an option. She also explained the difference between radical hysterectomy which is more elaborate than the simple hysterectomy which are done as part of treatment in some stages. Dr. Pustilnik whose specialty is DaVinci GYN Surgery, a more advance type of surgery done with extreme precision, explained the procedure via a video. There are many criteria, she explained prior to selecting this procedure. Like all treatments, this procedure also has some side effects which the doctors usually explain. A Q & A Session followed the presentations and many guests were able to clear some of their doubts about cervical cancer. In conclusion Dr. Dorai, Treasurer proposed a vote of thanks. Refreshments were served at the end of the session.

Daga, who resides in Meng’s district in Forest Hills, New York, fulfilled his community service by volunteering for Boy Scouts service projects in New York City, particularly in the borough of Queens. He cleaned parks and cleaned and painted churches, senior citizen facilities, and public schools. He also helped install and maintain landscaping. Indian-origin duo developing marijuana breathalyser
T
ORONTO: A marijuana breathalyser that can test for drugged driving is being developed by an Indian-origin duo in Canada. Kal Malhi, a former Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer in Surrey, British Columbia, decided to develop the pot breathalyser after reading a Swedish study. The study found that people could be tested for marijuana through their breath, as opposed to traditional methods involving saliva or urine. Malhi said he is confident his team can take the study’s findings and incorporate them into a handheld device that provides accurate readings. The plan is to have a prototype built within three to four months, then have the Swedish university that led the initial study run a clinical trial with that prototype. Malhi said breath testing has one major advantage it can show if a person has
smoked marijuana within two hours. In saliva and urine tests, marijuana can be detected if it’s been smoked at any point within 72 hours, long after the long after the high has passed, ‘The Globe and Mail’ reported. Trying to prove a driver is still high when they have gotten behind the wheel can be frustrating for police, Malhi said. “It’s largely based on observations you make of the person. And the observations aren’t so obvious for drugged drivers as they are for drunk drivers,” he said. Malhi has partnered with Raj Attariwala, a Vancouverbased radiologist and nuclear medicine physician with a doctorate in biomedical engineering, for the Breathalyser project. Bruce Goldberger, of the University of Florida’s Forensic Toxicology Laboratory, is a senior adviser for the project.

minent lawyer Gopal Subramanium today opted out of being considered for appointment as Supreme Court judge after lashing out at the Modi government accusing it of ordering CBI to “scrounge” for “dirt” against him to scuttle his elevation. Subramanium, who had assisted the Supreme Court in the Sohrabuddin fake encounter case in which Amit Shah, a close aide of Prime Minister Narender Modi is now an accused, said that he was being “targeted” because of his inde-
pendence and integrity. He suggested that his role as amicus curiae, a friend of the court, in the Sohrabuddin case, could have been the reason for government opposing his elevation, although he had no direct evidence. Subramanium, a former Solicitor General, sent a 9-page letter to the Chief Justice of India R M Lodha withdrawing his consent to be appointed as a judge saying that he did not want his elevation to be “the
Recent reports have suggested the NDA government’s reluctance to Subramanium’s appointment while it is said to have cleared the other three names. The CBI and the Intelligence Bureau (IB) are said to have given adverse reports against him. Subramanium said that he had been informed by the Chief Justice on May 15 that he had been given a clean chit by both IB and CBI. But in the past two weeks media reports had spoken about alleged adverse reports against him by the two agencies. The events of the past few weeks “have raised serious doubts in my mind as to the ability of the executive govern-
ment to appreciate and respect the independence, integrity, and the glory of the judicial institution”, he wrote to the Chief Justice, adding, “I do not expect this attitude to improve with time”.

He had been greeted “with a measure of respect” by Modi who had invited him and his wife to Gujarat as his guests of honour although he had not availed of that hospitality. Subramanium said that he had never met Amit Shah and had only seen his photographs in newspapers recently. In the course of hearing on Shah’s bail application, he had said that his liberty should not be infringed and he may be allowed bail but asked to remain outside Gujarat. “This is only to indicate that I had no personal vengeance or any kind of grudge against the said Mr Amit Shah,” he said in the letter to Justice Lodha. Modi government agrees to give greater access to nuclear watchdog New Delhi: Signalling the continuity of policy, the new government has ratified the Additional Protocol, a commitment given under Indo-US nuclear deal by the previous dispensation to grant greater access to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to monitor India’s civilian atomic programme. The Additional Protocol was ratified last week and this has been conveyed to the Viennabased IAEA, the global watchdog of nuclear activities, sources said. The IAEA had in March 2009 approved an additional protocol to India’s safeguards agreement consequent to a pact reached with the agency the previous year to place its civilian nuclear facilities under IAEA safeguards. That agreement had paved the way for the 45-member Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) to grant India-specific waiver for it to have commercial relations with other countries in the civilian atomic field. The waiver was necessary as India, despite being a nucleararmed state, is not a signatory to the NPT. The ratification is a signal by the Narendra Modi government to the world, particularly the US, that it is serious in continuing to implement the Indo-US nuclear deal. This assumes significance since Modi is scheduled to travel to Washington to meet President Barack Obama in September. The sources pointed out that India wants to send a strong signal to the international community that it is a “serious and responsible” nuclear weapon state amid its keenness to become a member of the Nuclear Suppliers Group or NSG.

Warrant needed for cell phone search: top US court by Rob Lever, Chantal Valery
W
ashington (AFP) - The US Supreme Court ruled Wednesday that police must obtain a warrant before searching the cell phone of a suspect, in a major civil liberties test in the smartphone age. Mobile phones deserve the same protection against “unreasonable searches and seizures” as other personal property -- for example homes -- enshrined in the US constitution’s Fourth Amendment, the top US court said. The court, in two cases involving criminal suspects whose mobile handsets were searched by police, weighed the interest of law enforcement in finding important evidence against the civil liberties guaranteed in the constitution. Attacking the reports as “malicious insinuations based on half truths”, he said these appeared to be “a result of carefully planned leaks aimed at generating doubts in the minds of the collegium and of the public as to the suitability and propriety of appointing me as a judge of the Supreme Court.”
Subramanium said that he was dismayed at reports that the file forwarded by the court to the government recommending him and three others for elevation has been “segregated” and the names of the other three had been cleared by the government as well as by the President, who had issued warrants for their appointments.
Rebutting specific allegations, Subramanium told the Chief Justice that reports that he had convened a meeting between CBI officers and the counsel of a person (the then Telecom Minister A Raja) who was a suspect at that time in the 2G case, were factually incorrect. He said that he had advised
He also dismissed allegations of connection with lobbyist Niira Radia during his tenure as government law officer.
“I further understand that the segregation has been carried without the file being sent back to the collegium for reconsideration. “In fact, I have now reliably learnt that no file was sent seeking reconsideration and that segregation and appointments have been made outside
your knowledge and also without the active consent of the collegium.
brazenly done. An attempt at “scrounging for dirt” against him was done, he said.
“If my understanding is correct then the aforesaid three appointments appeared to be against the framework prescribed by the Constitution and by the Supreme Court in various pronouncements,” he said in his letter to the Chief Justice.
“If the government would have had an ounce conscience, it would not have returned the recommendation (of the collegium”, Subramanium said.
Asked if his role in the Sohrabuddin case was the motive behind the government’s decision, Subramanium said, “that is what is believed. But I have no direct evidence. “But in the process of deduction after cancelling four other false allegations, that is what remains.” When pressed further, he said, “I cannot think of any other motive..” He said soon after coming to power the new government had given the CBI a mandate to do “dirt digging” which was
He also did not spare the judiciary in the episode. “I told the CJI that I will not be able to take this any more. My family is in agony. There was no one in the judiciary to tell the government that is not the way a candidate for judiciary is to be decided.” “I don’t need a character certificate from the executive government or any member of the judiciary. I have lived a 34-year unblemished record as a lawyer. I have done nothing wrong. I don’t have to offer any explanation to anyone,” he said. Subramanium maintained that by allowing segregation by the executive what was implicit was the “surrender” of its inde-
advent of 21st century technology. “Our cases have recognized that the Fourth Amendment was the founding generation’s response to the reviled ‘general warrants’ and ‘writs of assistance’ of the colonial era, which allowed British officers to rummage through homes in an unrestrained search for evidence of criminal activity,” Roberts wrote. “Opposition to such searches was in fact one of the driving forces behind the Revolution itself.” Roberts said that people store vast amounts of personal data on their phones and that “the fact that technology now allows an individual to carry such information in his hand does not make the information any less worthy of the protection for which the Founders fought.” “Our answer to the question
pendence by the judiciary. “I was not angling for a job. I was invited for the job. If the government had discomfiture (over his name) it should have been open to persuasion but it can’t be that you don’t open up,” he said. Giving reasons for his opting out of consideration for elevation, Subramanium said “a judge requires public confidence. He can’t begin his career with trust deficit.” “I have consciously opted out of being a judge and possibly the chief justice,” he said claiming he was a victim. Rejecting the reported claim in an IB report that he was given to spirituality and not bound by judicial reasoning, Subramanium said as an amicus curiae in the Sri Padmanabhaswamy Temple case he did observe certain religious traditions as was required while entering the temple and doing the probe into missing treasure. And he did pray to God to give him guidance but that does not make him devoid of jurispru-

The court said the few exceptions to these guidelines would be only “to protect officer safety or to preserve evidence.” - ‘Old values apply’ Roberts was joined by seven of the eight other justices, while Justice Samuel Alito wrote an opinion in support of the ruling but expressed reservations. Steven Shapiro at the American Civil Liberties Union hailed the decision as important for constitutional rights. “By recognizing that the digital revolution has transformed our expectations of privacy, today’s decision is itself revolutionary and will help to protect the privacy rights of all Americans,” he said in a statement.
dence. “When I do my duty as a lawyer I am completely secular and logical and stick to the brief,” he said. Citing yet another charge that he had “behaved funnily” by visiting Parliament House complex being the government’s lawyer in the 2001 terror attack case, he said he went there on a morning to pay homage to the martyrs who died facing the terrorist bullets and went back to do his duty as a lawyer. “It is hitting below the belt,” he regretted. Expressing surprise and feeling “flattered” that IB kept a tab on his spirituality, Subramanium said, “I don’t want IB to be the judge of a lawyer whether he is rational or spiritual.” Maintaining that he had no evidence whether Modi had any hostility or animus against him, the senior lawyer said he would like the government to reconsider the idea that a judge should be pliable and that he should not ask questions of the government. Ramadan 2014: Facts, History, Dates, Myanmar welcomes Greeting And Rules Of The Muslim Fast ancient cities entry on World Heritage list

Muslims offer prayers in front of the historic Taj Mahal on Eid al-Fitr in Agra, India, Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2011. Eid alFitr is a holiday marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan, which is observed by millions of Muslims around the world. (Courtesy: AP Photo/Pawan Sharma) by Yasmine Hafiz. The Huffington Post | 06/21/2014 What are the dates of Ramadan? Because the cycle of the lunar calendar does not match the solar calendar, the dates of Ramadan shift by approximately 11 days each year. In 2014, Ramadan is expected to begin on Sunday, June 29, in the United States, although the date is only confirmed once the moon is sighted. Ramadan for the rest of the world is expected to begin on Saturday, June 28th. The ending of Ramadan is marked by the holiday of Eid ul-Fitr, which takes place either 29 or 30 days after the beginning of the month. On Eid ulFitr, morning prayers are followed by feasting and celebration among family and friends. What is the history of Ramadan? Ramadan is the 9th month of the Islamic calendar. The term Ramadan literally means scorching in Arabic. It was established as a Holy Month for
Muslims after the Quran was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad in 610 CE on the occasion known as Laylat alQadr, frequently translated as “the Night of Power. What are the daily fasting requirements? During the month of Ramadan, most Muslims fast from dawn to sunset with no food or water. Before sunrise many Muslims have the Suhur or predawn meal. At sunset families and friends gather for Iftar which is the meal eaten by Muslims to break the fast. Many Muslims begin the meal by eating dates as the Prophet used to do. This ritual fast known as, Sawm, is one of the five pillars of Islam, and requires that individuals abstain from eating, drinking, smoking and sexual intercourse. To find the specific times for Ramadan fasting, click over to this helpful tool provided by IslamiCity that allows you to calculate prayer schedules -- including sunup and sundown -- by entering your city or zip code.
What are the expectations towards charity? Charity is an important part of Ramadan. The fast emphasizes selfsacrifice and using the experience of hunger to grow in empathy with the hungry. During Ramadan, Muslim communities work together to raise money for the poor, donate clothes and food, and hold iftar dinners for the less fortunate. What scriptural study do Muslims take part in? Many Muslims use Ramadan to read the entire Quran or read the Quran daily. Many communities divide the Quran into daily reading segments that conclude on Eid ul-Fitr at the end of Ramadan. Can non-Muslims participate? Non-Muslims are free to participate in Ramadam. Many non-Muslims fast and even pray with their Muslim friends or family members. Non-Mus-

yanmar on Monday welcomed the designation of its ancient Pyu kingdom cities as a UNESCO world heritage site, marking its first entry onto the UN cultural agency’s prized list.
The temples, some of which are around 1,000 years old, are one of the country’s most treasured religious sites and a top attraction for foreign tourists flocking to Myanmar as it emerges from decades of military rule.
An annual World Heritage Committee meeting in Doha on Sunday granted endangered status to the remains of the cities of Hanlin, Beikthano and Sri Ksetra in the country’s Irrawaddy basin.
But experts have previously warned that haphazard renovation work on some of the temples has irreversibly damaged the landscape, which could threaten Bagan’s chances of winning World Heritage status.
“We are happy. We all worked hard to make this happen for a long time,” Daw Me Me Khaing, director of the archaeology department at Myanmar’s culture ministry, told AFP.
The brick, walled and moated cities at Pyu reflect the Pyu kingdoms that flourished for over 1,000 years between 200 B.C. and 900 A.D., according to UNESCO.
Inclusion on the list has significant economic implications as a World Heritage Site is eligible for financial assistance toward preservation, while the status is a powerful draw for tourists.
“These ancient cities built along the Ayeyarwady (Irrawaddy) Valley belong to the Pyu, a people speaking a language closely related to Myanmar and now extinct,” UNESCO said in a statement.
Remains of the palace citadels, brick Buddhist stupas and burial grounds at the site currently draw around 60,000 local and foreign visitors every year, according to Daw Me Me Khaing, who hopes the new status will bring many more.
The Paris-based United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) oversees the system of granting coveted World Heritage Site status to important cultural and natural sites.
“We will have a better situation for our heritage sites as we gain experience from this,” she said.
Obtaining the status for sites is a point of pride for many nations and can boost tourism, but it comes with strict conservation rules.
Officials are now campaigning for Myanmar’s better-known ancient city of Bagan, home to a sprawling complex of Buddhist temples, to join the Pyu cities on the UNESCO list, she added.
Other sites given the status this year include a French cave that is home to the world’s earliest known figurative drawings, and ancient terraces in the West Bank that are under threat from the Israeli separation barrier.

thoughts and deeds which are counter to Islam. By removing material desires, one is able to focus fully on devotion and service to God. Many Muslims go beyond the physical ritual of fasting and attempt to purge themselves of impure thoughts and motivations such as anger, cursing, and greed.
Those wishing to be polite to someone who is fasting for Ramadan may greet them with Ramadan Mubarak or Ramadan Kareem, which mean Have a Blessed or Generous Ramadan. Should Muslims with diabetes fast? However, the study says this was not conclusive. Many diabetic patients fasted with no complications. Patients with diabetes should work with their doctors to figure out a strategy if they choose to fast. What is the ‘goal’ of Ramadan? In general, the practices of Ramadan are meant to purify oneself from
Do all Muslims take part in Ramadan fasting? Most Muslims believe Ramadan fasting is mandatory, but there are some groups that do not. Pregnant or breastfeeding mothers, people who are seriously sick, travelers, or those at health risk should not fast. Children that have not gone through puberty are also not required to fast during the month Ramadan.

CIA planned a bin Laden ‘demon’ doll
WASHINGTON, June 20, 2014 (AFP) - The CIA once considered producing a toy action figure of Osama bin Laden that would transform into a devil-eyed demon, hoping to persuade children abroad that he was no hero, but a scary villain. The face of the 12-inch (30 centimeter) doll was painted with a heat-dissolving material designed to peel off, revealing bin Laden to be a demonic monster, with a red race, frightening green eyes and black facial markings, the Washington Post reported.

ELBOURNE: A first of its kind food magazine detailing 25 top Indian Restaurants in Australia, success stories of Indian-origin entrepreneurs in the food industry and celebrity chef Sanjeev Kapoor’s Indo-Australian recipes has been launched. ‘Spice Out’ magazine, an annual publication of The Indian Executive Club (IEC) was released on Monday night by Kapoor at a gala event, attended by numerous top Indian restaurant owners and food industry experts. Kapoor told the gathering that the new initiative of introducing an Indian food guide would assist in generating quality information for locals, Indian travelers and Indian diaspora down under apart from creating a channel to disseminate information on the Indian food business. Sharing how he dreamed big while picking cookery as his career despite a brilliant score as a student Kapoor said that Spice Out magazine should fledge out to other parts of the country and eventually globally to make it big. Spice Out, the first Indian food guide of Melbourne, lists 25 top Indian restaurants and success stories of Indian-origin entrepreneurs in the
food industry. Apart from that, the inaugural edition has been packed with Kapoor’s exclusive recipe with Indo-Australian flavour like Macadamia pesto sweet potatoes and Sun dried tomatoes, warm quinao salad with Barramundi, cardamom and vanilla pancakes with poached strawberries. Commenting on the magazine launch, the IEC Cofounder Siddarth Suresh said. “We found that there was an urgent need to start a dialogue in the Indian hospitality sector in Melbourne. Our food presentation, recipes, interiors are getting stale.” “Although Indian food is extremely popular in Australia, we have reached a stage where there is a need to re look at how we present this sector,” Suresh said. “Melbourne is home to more than 500 of Indian food joints,” Suresh said, adding the magazine would be an ideal platform for Indian chefs and food entrepreneurs to share and innovate ideas. “We can influence the larger Australian community and their food habits. This will see a growth in the Indian food sector with demands growing for spices and other ingredients used in our cooking,” he said. (Courtesy: PTI)
The 2005 psychological operation, dubbed “Devil Eyes,” solicited expert advice from a prominent retired executive from the Hasbro toy company, Donald Levine, who looked into manufacturing the action figure in China. Three prototypes were created, but the spy agency decided not to go ahead with the project, the CIA said. “The action figure idea was proposed and rejected by CIA before it got past the prototype stage,” spokeswoman K.J. Caldwell told AFP. “To our knowledge, there were only three individual action figures ever created, and these were merely to show what a final product might look like,” she said. The dolls were never manufactured or distributed by the agency and the “CIA has no knowledge of these action figures being produced or distributed by others,” she said. The Washington Post, however, quoting an anonymous source familiar with the project, said hundreds of the action figures were made in a pre-production run in China and then shipped to the Pakistani city of Karachi in 2006. The former Hasbro executive, Levine, had made his name helping to create the best-selling GI Joe action figure toys that started in the 1960s.
Indian court issues arrest warrant for MS Dhoni fixing. According to a report submitted to Justice Mukul Mudgal by G. Sampath Kumar (SP, Railways, Trichy), Kumar had carried out an investigation as SP, Crime Branch CID (internal security) and came in touch with bookies when investigating a fake passport case in 2013. He had submitted the report to Justice Mudgal and top cricketers like M.S. Dhoni and Suresh Raina’s names came up in the report. Justice Mudgal did not give clean chit to anyone but said further investigation needs to be done on spot and matchfixing. But the current focus on just betting is raising questions as to whether senior players are being deliberately shielded and a cover-up is in place .(Source: Dawn).

n Indian court on Tuesday issued an arrest warrant for Indian cricket team captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni for allegedly hurting religious sentiments of Hindus. Formula One: F1 needs cows not just glamour, drivers say
S
PIELBERG BEI KNITTELFELD, (AFP) - Formula One may be known for its glamourous races in places like Monaco or Abu Dhabi, but for many drivers it wouldn’t be the same without a few bovines thrown into the mix. Ahead of the Austrian Grand Prix -- returning here this weekend after an 11-year absence -- teams could not stop posting pictures on social media of rolling hills and old-castles-turned-hotels. Instead of luxury condominiums, spectators were camped out in tents around the track in a rowdy beer-fuelled atmosphere. “It’s old-school racing, everyone camping, good party at the campsites,” former champion Jenson Button said Friday. “We love Monaco, we love the glamour of Monaco, we love the city races like Montreal. But it’s also nice to have one of these old-school tracks,” said the McLaren driver, one of the few to have raced here before. “This is a race that we love. It’s a lot more relaxed.” Current championship leader Nico Rosberg of Mercedes joked that he was staying in his motor-

A far cry from the usual shiny F1 image of stars and fast cars, the Austrian Grand Prix has prompted countless references already to the 1965 film “The Sound of Music,” set in the idyllic Austrian Alps. But the F1 season would be poorer without it, Force India’s Nico Hulkenberg insisted.
“I think the mixture is important. We have these modern and big cities like Singapore, Montreal. But then to come here is a nice contrast: completely different, middle of nowhere, a lot of cows, a lot of trees. I like it here.” On Thursday, an old tractor pulled up alongside the ultramodern motorhomes of Mercedes and Ferrari in the paddock, unloading a group of men and women in traditional dress, who played the accordeon and offered food and Schnapps to passers-by.

Where Can You Receive Care? Most long-term care is provided at home. Other kinds of long-term care services and supports are provided by community service organizations and in long-term care facilities. Examples of home care services include: An unpaid caregiver who may be a family member or friend
Adult day services in the area
A nurse, home health or home care aide, and/or therapist who comes to the home
A variety of long-term care facilities
Community support services include:
A caregiver can be your family member, partner, friend or neighbor who helps care for you while you live at home. About 80 percent of care at home is provided by unpaid caregivers and may include an array of emotional, financial, nursing, social, homemaking, and other services. On average, caregivers spend 20 hours a week giving care. More than half (58 percent) have intensive caregiving responsibilities that may include assisting with a personal care activity, such as bathing or feeding.
Adult day care service centers
Information on caregivers show that: About 65.7 million people in the US (one in four adults) were unpaid family caregivers to an adult or child in 2009 About two-thirds are women Fourteen percent who care for older adults are themselves age 65 or more Most people can live at home for many years with help from unpaid family and friends, and from other paid community support.
Transportation services Home care agencies that provide services on a daily basis or as needed Often these services supplement the care you receive at home or provide time off for your family caregivers. Outside the home, a variety of facility-based programs offer more options: Nursing homes provide the most comprehensive range of services, including nursing care and 24-hour supervision Other facility-based choices include assisted living, board and care homes, and continuing care retirement communities. With these providers, the level of choice over who delivers your care varies by the type of facility. You may not get to choose who will deliver services, and you may have limited say in when they arrive. To Be Continued……. Disease-causing chemicals in everyday products cost EU billions: NGO BRUSSELS, June 18, 2014 (AFP) - Disease-causing chemicals in everyday products from sunscreen to store receipts cost EU countries more than 30 billion euros in health costs, a study said on Wednesday. According to a report by the Health and Environment Alliance, a leading activist group on EU health matters, hormonedisrupting chemicals are causing spiralling rates of disease and putting a dangerous strain on healthcare policies across the 28-country bloc. “Exposure to food and everyday electronic, cosmetic and plastic products containing hormone disrupting chemicals may be costing up to 31 billion euros ($42 billion) per year in the European Union,” the alliance said in a statement. It based the calculation on the cost of treating a list of diseases and conditions it said scientists had found to be related to hormone disorders.
the effects of these chemicals however, and the Commission, under intense pressure by the chemicals industry lobby, has missed a December 2013 deadline to provide a comprehensive list of the potentially dangerous toxins. Sweden has threatened to sue the Commission on the delay and France last week urged immediate action from EU ministers after unveiling a national strategy to replace the chemicals in retail products. The chemical industry insists that more research is needed before setting any criteria, and has resisted calls for action.
Bisphenol A, found in plastics, is the most often targeted chemical and has already sparked bans on certain makes of baby feeding bottles. But new research regularly identifies other chemicals. Last month, German and Danish scientists said chemical ingredients used in hygiene and consumer products interfere with male fertility by damaging sperm. The chemicals included 4-methylbenzylidene camphor, an ultraviolet filter used in some sunscreens, and the anti-bacterial agent Triclosan, used in toothpaste.

this summer!
These include cancer, obesity, fertility problems, and penis abnormalities in baby boys, it said. The cost argument is the latest element in a push, led by France and Sweden, to incite the European Commission to meet a long-delayed commitment to identify the dangerous chemicals. HEALTH, TECH & SCIENCE studies showing the following ranges for key blood pressureregulating minerals in walnuts: Potassium- 375-500, Calcium13-91, Magnesium- 189-278 (milligrams/100 grams).
Prof. Meenakshi Bhattacharjee, Rice University, Houston.
Cardiovascular Benefits No aspect of walnuts has been better evaluated in the research than their benefits for the heart and circulatory system. Some review studies have emphasized the very favorable impact of walnuts on “vascular reactivity,” namely, the ability of our blood vessels to respond to various stimuli in a healthy manner. In order to respond to different stimuli in a healthy way, many aspects of our cardiovascular system must be functioning optimally. These aspects include: ample presence of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory nutrients, proper blood composition, correct balance in inflammation-regulating molecules, and proper composition and flexibility in our blood vessel walls. Researchers have determined the ability of walnuts to have a favorable impact on all of these aspects. Research on the blood pressure benefits of walnuts has been mixed. These mixed results are related to the surprising differences in mineral composition amongst different varieties of walnuts. Researchers have long been aware of the relationship between healthy blood pressure and intake of specific minerals, including potassium, calcium, and magnesium. In multiple studies, these minerals have a much greater impact on blood pressure than the mineral sodium (familiar to most people in its sodium chloride form, i.e., everyday table salt). We’ve seen
Even though there are valuable amounts of these blood pressure-regulating minerals in virtually all varieties of walnuts, the ranges above may help explain why some studies have shown statistically significant benefits from walnuts on blood pressure while others have not. Not in question with respect to walnuts and cardiovascular support is their reliable omega-3 content. Adequate intake of omega-3s, including the alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) present in walnuts, has repeatedly been shown to help improve a wide variety of cardiovascular functions, including blood pressure. In at least one research study, adults have been able to significantly increase their blood level of ALA with as few as 4 walnuts per day. Walnuts Help Reduce Problems in Metabolic Syndrome In the United States, as many as 1 in 4 adults may be eligible for diagnosis with Metabolic Syndrome (MetS). MetS isn’t so much a “disease” as a constellation of problematic and overlapping metabolic problems including excessive blood fats (triglycerides), high blood pressure, inadequate HDL cholesterol, and obesity (as measured by waist circumference, and/or body mass index). Recent studies have shown that approximately one ounce of walnuts daily over a period of 2-3 months can help reduce several of these MetS-related problems. In addition, addition of walnuts to participant diets has also been shown to decrease “abdominal adiposity”—the technical term for the depositing of fat around the mid-section. Importantly, the MetS benefits of added walnuts have been achieved without causing

What’s New and Beneficial about Walnuts - Part II
exactly what they have done in an increasing number of research studies involving risk and/or treatment of obesity. While it is definitely possible to overconsume walnuts, most everyday diets could remain correctly balanced in terms of calories and fat while still including fairly generous amounts of walnuts (in the range of 1-3 ounces).
MAJOR HEALTH BENEFITS
A limited (but increasing) number of studies have shown potential health benefits for walnuts in the area of memory and general thought processes (often referred to as “cognitive” processes). Thus far, most of the initial research in this area has involved rats and mice, but we expect to see cognitive benefits of walnuts for humans becoming a topic of increasing research interest.
weight gain in any the studies we’ve seen to date. Benefits in Treatment of Type 2 Diabetes Although we think about type 2 diabetes as a problem primarily related to blood sugar control and insulin metabolism, persons diagnosed with type 2 diabetes typically have health problems in other related systems, and are at special risk for cardiovascular problems. An important part of the goal in designing a diet plan for persons with type 2 diabetes is lowering the risk of future cardiovascular problems. In this context, consumption of walnuts is establishing a more and more impressive research track record. Increased flexibility in the response of the cardiovascular system following meals has been a repeated finding in research on walnuts. A variety of different measurements on blood vessel functioning (including their measurement by ultrasound) show a relatively small amount of daily walnut intake (1-2 ounces) to provide significant benefits in this area for persons with type 2 diabetes. Better blood fat composition (including less LDL cholesterol and less total cholesterol) has also been demonstrated in persons with type 2 diabetes. Anti-Cancer Benefits Given the wide variety antioxidant and anti-inflammatory nutrients found in walnuts, it’s not surprising to see research
on this tree nut showing measurable anti-cancer benefits. The antioxidant properties of walnuts help lower risk of chronic oxidative stress, and the anti-inflammatory properties help lower risk of chronic inflammation, and it is precisely these two types of risk, that, when combined, pose the greatest threat for cancer development. Prostate cancer and breast cancer are the best-studied types of cancer with respect to walnut intake, and their risk has been found to be reduced by fairly large amounts of walnut consumption. (Large in this case means approximately 3 ounces per day.) For prostate cancer, the evidence is somewhat stronger, and more studies have involved human subjects. For breast cancer, most of the evidence has been based on studies of rats and mice. Other Health Benefits The anti-inflammatory nutrients in walnuts may play a special role in support of bone health. A recent study has shown that large amounts of walnuts decrease blood levels of N-telopeptides of type 1 collagen (NTx). These collagen components provide a good indicator of bone turnover, and their decreased blood level in response to walnut intake is an indication of better bone stability and less mineral loss from the bone. “Large amounts” of walnuts (in this study, actually raw walnuts plus walnut oil) translated into 50% of total dietary fat. In an everyday
diet that provided 2,000 calories and 30% of those calories from fat, this 50% standard for walnuts would mean about 67 grams of fat from walnuts or 4 ounces of this tree nut on a daily basis. While this amount is more than would most people would ordinarily consume, we expect the health benefits of walnuts for bone health to be demonstrated in future studies at substantially lower levels of intake. Walnuts have also produced a good track record in the research as a desirable food for support of weight loss and for prevention of obesity. That finding often surprises people because they think of highfat, high-calorie foods as a primary contributing factor to obesity and to weight gain. In general, overconsumption of high-fat, high-calorie foods is a primary contributing factor to obesity and weight gain. However, obesity has also been clearly identified by researchers as involving chronic, unwanted inflammation. As discussed earlier in this Health Benefits section and throughout this walnuts’ profile, walnuts are unique in their collection of anti-inflammatory nutrients. These nutrients include omega-3 fatty acids; phytonutrients including tannins, phenolic acids, and flavonoids; quinones like juglone; and other anti-inflammatory phytonutrients. These anti-inflammatory benefits can overshadow the high-calorie and high-fat risk posed by walnuts, and that’s
A final fascinating aspect of walnuts and their potential health benefits involves melatonin (MLT). MLT is a widelyactive messaging molecule in our nervous system, and very hormone-like in its regulatory properties. MLT is critical in the regulation of sleep, daily (circadian) rhythms, light-dark adjustment, and other processes. It has also been found to be naturally occurring within walnuts. Average melatonin (MLT) content of walnuts is approximately 3.6 nanograms (ng) per gram (g), or 102ng/ounce. Other commonly eaten foods— for example, cherries—have also been found to measurable amounts of MLT. Researchers are not yet sure how everyday intake of MLT from walnuts is involved in our health, but several study authors have hypothesized about the MLT in walnuts as playing an important role (along with other walnut nutrients) in the anti-cancer benefits of this unusual food. Thus, munch a handful of walnuts a day and get the recommended levels of minerals, vitamins, and protein making a healthier you and a healthier world.

New Microsoft-Nokia smart- Air India joins global aviation alliance phone is... Android by Rob Lever
W
ASHINGTON, June 24, 2014 (AFP) - Microsoft on Tuesday opted for the Android operating system from arch rival Google for its new Nokia smartphone, in a move aimed at regaining momentum in the competitive mobile sector. Microsoft said the Nokia X2 was “designed to introduce the ‘next billion’ people to the mobile Internet and cloud services.”
While Microsoft has been struggling to get a foothold in the smartphone market with its Windows Phone operating system, the X2 “provides access to a world of Android apps and popular Microsoft services,” the statement said. Even though it uses the rival Android platform, the X2 offers “a gateway to Microsoft services,” including the Skype messaging program and OneDrive cloud storage. The initial Nokia X was unveiled at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in February before Microsoft completed its takeover of Nokia’s handset division in April. The new version cuts the price of a phone that has had success in some countries. “The Nokia X family is going from strength to strength, with the Nokia X smartphone achieving topselling status in Pakistan, Russia, Kenya and Nigeria, while earning the third best-selling smartphone spot in India,” said Timo Toikkanen, head of mobile phones for the Microsoft Devices Group. With the Nokia X unveiled in February, Android applications work but users cannot access Google’s
cording to the PTI news agency.
Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju told reporters in New Delhi that Air India would increase its revenue by about five percent by entering the alliance which includes Lufthansa, Singapore Airlines and Air Canada.
The Star Alliance of global airlines shares a fleet of more than 4,000 aircraft serving an estimated 640 million passengers annually with over 22,000 daily flights.
“It is a new beginning for Air India and we wish they fly higher than they have already flown,” said Raju, ac-
The device is an updated version of a phone unveiled by Nokia before Microsoft acquired the handset division of the Finnish giant. It will be sold worldwide as a dual-SIM phone at a price of $135 (99 euros), Microsoft said in a statement.
NEW DELHI, June 24, 2014 (AFP) - Air India has joined the Star Alliance network of global airlines seven years after its first attempt, the Indian government announced Tuesday, in a major boost for the loss-making staterun carrier.

the Windows Phone share, they can build the Windows services share.”
Tuesday’s statement said users would have access to the Nokia Store as “the place for finding the highest-quality Android apps” for the device.
Roger Kay, analyst with Endpoint Technologies, said the Android phone makes sense in view of the fragile position of the Windows Phone platform.
Windows Phone has managed to get only around 3.5 percent of the global smartphone market, while Android has more than 80 percent, according to recent figures from research firm IDC.
“Google has the dominant platform and Apple is number two, so there is a question about whether there is room for a number three,” Kay said.
- ‘Brilliant’ move Bob O’Donnell, founder of Technalysis Research, said Microsoft will get benefits from this strategy. “It’s counterintuitive to most people but I think it’s a brilliant move,” O’Donnell told AFP. “What they are doing is breaking the services from the platform and showing that services can exist on multiple platforms.” This means that even though the operating system will be Android, revenue-producing services like email, search and maps will be from Microsoft instead of Google. “It’s interesting and clever,” O’Donnell said. “Even as they build
He added that the Nokia unit appears to be maintaining some independence after being acquired by Microsoft and that “they want to sell as many phones as possible.” “Microsoft is hanging onto the phone business by its fingernails,” he said. “One bump and they could be gone. You still have a whole phone business in Nokia so it makes sense to be on the dominant platform.” Microsoft closed the deal in April with some adjustments from the announced price of $7.52 billion (5.44 billion euros). Nokia was the world leader in mobile phones before the introduction of Apple’s iPhone in 2007 and the onslaught of Android phones, mainly from Samsung.
The deal is expected to be formalised next month and will give Air India access to the 26-member alliance’s network, which covers more than 1,300 destinations.
Negotiations started in 2007 but hit a roadblock three years ago when Air India failed to meet the minimum joining requirements.
Malware worms its way into more apps: study WASHINGTON - Malicious software is increasingly making its way into mobile phones through “cloned” versions of popular apps, and software weaknesses in legitimate ones, security researchers said Tuesday. McAfee Labs said in its quarterly threat assessment that weaknesses in app security is becoming a growing problem for owners of mobile devices. In some cases, cybercriminals can take advantage of the popularity of an app by creating a clone, which can extract personal data or even allow an attack to gain control of the device. This was the case with “Flappy Birds,” a mobile game which saw a meteoric rise but was later withdrawn by its creator. McAfee Labs sampled 300 Flappy Bird clones and found that almost 80 percent contained malware. “Some of the behavior we found includes making calls without the user’s permission; sending, recording, and receiving SMS messages; extracting contact data; and tracking geolocation. In the worst cases, the malware gained root access, which allows uninhibited control of anything on the mobile device including confidential business information,” the report said. The McAfee report said some legitimate apps have security flaws which can be exploited by hackers. The researchers said they discovered an Android trojan “which exploits an encryption method weakness in the popular messaging app WhatsApp”
and then steals conversations and pictures stored on the device. “Although this vulnerability has now been fixed, we can easily imagine cybercriminals continuing to look for other flaws in this well-known app,” the report said. - Digital pickpockets The researchers also said they identified malware can steal money from a digital wallet. One of the malware programs identified “is disguised as an update for Adobe Flash Player or another legitimate utility app,” and can take over a digital wallet to send a money transfer to the attacker’s server. “Mobile malware has recently started to use legitimate apps and services, in addition to a platform’s standard features, to circumvent conventional surveillance by app stores and security products,” the McAfee report said. “Consequently, protecting only the underlying platform is no longer sufficient. We believe that developers need to protect their apps and services from unauthorized and malicious use.” McAfee’s Vincent Weafer said people may be lulled into a false sense of security about mobile apps. “We tend to trust the names we know on the Internet,” Weafer said. “The year 2014 has already given us ample evidence that mobile malware developers are playing on these inclinations, to manipulate the familiar, legitimate features in the mobile apps and services we recognize and trust.”

Give a little, take a little. If someone else wants to run the show, don’t object to it. You could find yourself facing a choice when you least expect one. Talk to people who matter. Use a little creativity to show that you are dependable, stable and willing to do whatever you can to help. You’re a lively contributor and a giving individual who will gain respect and approval from those in authority. Don’t forget to attend to your inner needs. You’ll be free to do what comes naturally.

Make fresh, new things happen while affirming that which has always been. You’ll feel vital and in control. Leadership is a big plus for you. Your words may be quoted. Your actions may have an effect on others, but it doesn’t all go to your head. Study your opponent or objective from a distance. You may find you need an altogether different approach. Be cautious in how you use your resources, don’t be hasty. Your willingness to listen is enough for someone who wants your attention. It’s too easy to take sides during an overheard dispute.

Celebrate July 4th We are Indian-Americans Come, Join and Celebrate The 4th of July! Voice of Asia invites all fellow citizens to join and honor this great nation that we live in
The United States of America! For the first time, Voice of Asia will be releasing a Special supplement commemorating the 4th of July and is giving you an unique opportunity to convey your message of solidarity. Let us take this opportunity to salute the founding fathers of this country, who decided to frame the constitution of the people, by the people and for the people, which includes you and me. Let us reach out beyond our language, religion, color, race, gender and regional differences. This is our country. Let us all stand united and use our education, influence and resources, our ability and skills, to unify our next generation to achieve greater things. Many Indian Americans have already made inroads and are serving this great nation in many different ways: in the political arena, as CEO’s, CFO’s and community leaders. You are the parents of a future Congressman or woman, Senators, Governors, law enforcement officers and President. Our children and grandchildren are going to be future Generals and Commanders in the armed forces, future scientists, Chancellors of Universities, and Educators. And we owe it all to this nation. It is time to give back. Let us join our neighbors and community and celebrate American Festivals, events and holidays. July 4th like all American festivals and holidays has more relevance and significance in the special freedom that we enjoy. Let us all be a part of it.
