lub 24 Plus, a social and philanthropic “by Invitation only” club attempted a very novel approach to enlighten its members on the issues of the visually impaired by hosting its outreach event at the Light of Houston on Friday, Sep. 12. The firstof-its-kind event was planned for members to be blind folded for three hours
(to the extent one felt comfortable) and experience being served by blind and visually impaired volunteers. Welcoming the guests, Asha Dhume, President, Club 24 Plus gave a gist of the Club that was founded eight years ago with the mission of building bridges and connecting with the mainstream community of Houston with the under-
Speaking to the guests, Lighthouse of Houston, President, Gibson M. DuTerroi said, “When people think about blind people, they think they have no vision but the majority of the blind people have some vision. We serve nine to eleven thousand people but there are 78,000 people in this community that are visually impaired,” he said and that we should be concerned as to what is happening to them. He urged that if anyone knew someone who needed help they should give the Lighthouse a call and see what they had to recommend. He told the member that they would always need dollars especially to keep up with the advancing technology that in turn helps with training. “It would make a lot of difference to the people we serve,” he added.
Chief Guest Sandhya Rao, an attorney who serves on the Board of Directors of the Lighthouse of Houston, received her education in behavioral science and psychology at Rice University followed by Law School at Stanford University. She shared her story about how she was afflicted with a debilitating condition (Osteopetrosis) when she was just two months old and due course lost part of her vision. But she fought all odds, never
gave up, “I’m very stubborn’ she admits and went on to achieving higher goals. She mentioned how the brail books in the Lighthouse of Houston helped her quench her thirst for learning. The guests were served dinner even as they were blind folded and even though it was for a short spell of time one could experience the challenges of eating not knowing what was being served. It was truly an uplifting experience.

Message from Daya The nation is consumed with the video depicting NFL star Ray Rice knocking his wife, Janay Rice, unconscious and dragging her limp body. The negative publicity from the video has forced the NFL to take action by suspending Ray Rice indefinitely. While this episode has captured the public’s attention, it is important to remember that thousands of American women – Black, White, Hispanic and Asian – experience Mrs. Rice’s pain and humiliation every single day, without the spotlight of the press on them. As an organization serving South Asian women experiencing domestic violence, Daya wants to use this opportunity to challenge everyone to look beyond the Rice episode to the pervasive problem of domestic violence that devalues women as a group, ignoring their safety and rights in the name of power, control, public image and profit. We ask you to join in our efforts to change attitudes and promote a culture that respects women enough to take a stance against all forms of violence against women, wherever and whenever it happens. Daya’s Mission: Daya supports South Asian women, their children and families who are trying to break the cycle of domestic and sexual violence and reclaim their lives. Daya empowers these women by offering counseling and advocacy, promoting community awareness, and by advocating at the policy level. Daya’s approach fosters individual freedom and respect leading to healthy families.

Far more displaced by disasters than conflict: Study (AFP) / 17 September 2014
T
he report said that 22 million people were displaced in 2013 due to disasters brought on by natural hazards, nearly three times the number who were forced from their homes due to violence. United States: Disasters last year displaced three times more people than violent conflicts, showing the urgent need to improve resilience for vulnerable people when fighting climate change, according to a study issued on Wednesday. The Norwegian Refugee Council, an independent group that focuses on emergency aid, released the findings ahead of a United Nations summit on Tuesday aimed at building momentum for a global agreement on climate change. The report said that 22 million people were displaced in 2013 due to disasters brought on by natural hazards, nearly three times the number who were forced from their homes due to violence. The problem has been worsening, with roughly twice as many people displaced around the world due to disasters now
than in the 1970s, even as better forecasting and relief operations have reduced the number of deaths. “It’s a wake-up call, I think, to world leaders coming here — as bad as it is today, it would be dramatically worse unless much more is invested in resilience,” said Jan Egeland, the Norwegian Refugee Council’s secretary general. “We have to make people in the Philippines or Chad or in Haiti as resilient as we are in Norway or in many parts of the United States,” he told AFP. Egeland is the former UN emergency relief coordinator who played a high-profile role drumming up international support after the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. He cited the experience as a model, saying that the more than $13 billion that poured in after the tsunami went not only for reconstruction but built up resilience for future disasters. Such an effort needs to happen on a global scale as “we need to get people out of this vicious cycle of being vulnerable and therefore being hit very hard again,” he said.
Vision: A South Asian community in Houston and beyond that is free from family violence.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has called Tuesday’s summit to mobilize world leaders before the 2015 conference in Paris that is meant to draft a new global agreement on climate change. The Norwegian study pointed to findings of a UN-led scientific panel, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which has said that human activity is contributing to the greater frequency and intensity of disasters around the planet. But the report said that a sharp rise in urbanization, and bad planning, were also factors in explaining the steep rise in disaster displacement. “We are not saying here that it’s climate change that has explained the increase. It’s just as much, or more, population growth and urbanization, bad planning and more exposure to the elements,” Egeland said. More than 80 percent of the people displaced by natural disasters last year were in Asia, the report found. The Philippines suffered the two most disruptive disasters last year, with typhoons Haiyan — also known as Yolanda — and Trami together displacing 5.8 million people.

Learning Samskrtam with laughter – A novel approach to an ancient language he led the revision games!
Swami Ramakrishnananda, the acarya from CIF delivering a talk on Sanskrit language. Photos by Jayesh Mistry by Padmashree Rao
E
ven Lord Ganesa must have been smiling when an audience of all ages waited with curiosity on August 29, 2014, that Friday evening of Ganesa Caturthi. It was the introductory class of the “Easy Sanskrit (Sulabha Samskrtam)” camp in the Chinmaya Smrti hall at Chinmaya Prabha, Houston. Soon, curiosity melted into light-hearted joy when Swami Ramakrishnananda, the acarya from Chinmaya International Foundation (CIF), Veliyanad, introduced everyone to the beauty, grace, poetry, and timeless value of the Sanskrit language, with easy humor. From the very first minutes of that opening class, it was obvious that learning Sanskrit from Swamiji was going to be a hilarious adventure! With curiosity giving way to eager interest, the audience came back the next morning
on Aug.30th. All night before, the tune of the great poet Kalidasa’s “Thatham thatham tham thathatham thatham tha…” from King Bhoja’s story that Swamiji had narrated, had been repeating itself in many brains! The way Swamiji had harmonized the interpretations of “Tat Tvam Asi” in deep, yet simple, words had been an eye-opener. There was something fascinating about the way this Swamiji was teaching the ancient language of our scriptures – it was like Sanskrit never before. The word had spread around in Houston. Those who had thought that they will just attend the introductory lecture came with more eagerness the next three days. The audience was diverse – the Acaryas Gaurangbhai and Darshanaben Nanavaty were promptly there, and so were the Bala Vihar teachers. Fathers, mothers, children and grandparents sat together, ready
Members at the Chinmaya Mission Houston listing to acharya Swami Ramakrishnananda’s lecture. with their notebooks. Those who knew absolutely no Sanskrit as well as those who had learned Sanskrit in their schools and colleges in India – both categories sat equally ready to listen to Swamiji as he began the class. There was not even a minute of boredom, as Swamiji charmed and challenged everyone to learn without inhibition. People had to stop themselves from rolling with laughter when Swamiji play-acted, sang opera-style, mimicked accents, and often ‘cooked up’ hilarious examples, quoting mouthwatering Indian delicacies! And, after a while, the sheer fun and unadulterated taste of learning took over. Adults became children and learned to rap vowels, consonants and verb conjugations in Sanskrit, taking cue from teenagers and
young adults. The children, who were pleasantly surprised to see a Swamiji advocate the rap method, immediately connected with the learning process! Many looked amused at their parents’ antics and their efforts to keep with the rhythm of the youngsters. Yet, learning never took a backseat to the unending episodes of laughter. Having navigated the alphabet and carefully identifying the many groups of pure consonants through strange ‘classification’ methods, by the third class, Swamiji expertly led the alert audience into the expanding Sanskrit world of nouns, indeclinables, and verbs. Swamiji likened the whole learning process to a housebuilding project. In just three classes of about four-and-a half hours, the functional four walls
and a simple roof made a simply elegant “home of Sanskrit” take shape. Nouns of three genders, and their twenty-four forms, the changeless indeclinables, and the entertaining combinations of the 2200 verb roots, along with pronouns – all soon came together in happy, coherent sentences. The members of the audience were amazed – they actually could build simple sentences in Sanskrit and speak! What a joy to glimpse into the language of the sages! Encouraging everyone at each step, Swami Ramakrishnananda then gently introduced the “past, present, and future” tense forms of some common verbs. Any tension in the learning process vanished when Swamiji taught with dramatic flair, often using reverse logic techniques. The audience “remembered to forget” whenever
The acarya and author of the “Sulabha Samskrtam” courses in many formats (home-study, online, DVD etc. at www. chinfo.org ) has made it his life’s mission to make Sanskrit a familiar and loved language. He illustrated how knowing just basic Sanskrit can open the doors to greater understanding. In his concluding session, he presented a few of the very familiar verses from the Bhaja Govindam and the Bhagavad Gita, and helped the audience to read in the light of what they learned so far. To get such insight into a realm that had seemed so unreachable made everyone feel grateful for this unique Samskrtam camp, straight from the land of Sri Adi Sankaracarya. Nobody wanted that camp to end; such was the magic of the Sanskrit classes taught by Swami Ramakrishnananda. When Swamiji concluded and praised Chinmaya Prabha Houston for the excellent organizational support during the camp, the Houston audience of almost two hundred Samskrtam students felt reluctant to leave - the rap tunes, the “rice, mustard, jilebi” jokes, and “the T-dal vs. C-dal” dilemma really made the “Sulabha Samskrtam” camp an experience hard to forget! Experiments with Truth: Gandhi and Images of Nonviolence ing simplicity of this photograph, whose author remains unidentified, conveys the deep significance of these items, which serve as incarnations of Gandhi’s ascetic lifestyle and his conviction that the practice of satyagraha must begin “with the individual, at home,” as he once explained.
ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS ABOUT PERMANENT RESIDENCE
Q: I just became a permanent resident. I need to return to my home country as my mother is sick. I am not sure how long I will need to stay there. As a permanent resident, what do I need to know about extended travel abroad? A: If you think there is a possibility that you will end up being abroad for more than one year, I advise that you apply for a re-entry permit before leaving. The re-entry permit is valid for a period of two years and this will allow you to stay abroad for more than one year without losing your permanent residence. The application for re-entry permit is filed on Form I-131, Application for Travel Document. Q: My permanent resident card will be expiring in two months. What form do I need to use to request for a new permanent resident card? A: You will use Form I-90, Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card. You can download the application form at www.uscis.gov, click “Forms”. Alternatively, you may contact USCIS at 1-800-375-5283 to request for the Form I-90 to be mailed to you. Q: I was informed that as a Permanent Resident, I need to notify immigration that I have moved. Is this correct? A: Yes, this is correct. When you move, you need to notify the Department of Homeland Security of your new address. You must file Form AR-11, Alien’s Change of Address Card within 10 days of your move. This can be done online at http://www.uscis.gov/ar-11 Click on ‘online AR-11’ and follow the instructions accordingly. Notification of change of address may also be done by mail. The website also provides instructions for this. Q: I am a permanent resident and I recently pled guilty to an offence. I am worried that I could be deported for my crime. A: A permanent resident can be placed in removal proceedings if convicted of certain types of crimes. The most serious types of crimes are those known as aggravated felonies which now includes crimes such as murder, rape, sexual abuse of minor, money laundering and fraud type crimes where the amount exceeds $10,000, any type of crime of violence or theft offense if the sentences imposed is at least one year regardless of whether the sentence for imprisonment has been suspended or not and drug trafficking crimes. A permanent resident may also be placed in removal proceedings if convicted of a crime involving moral turpitude within 5 years after his or her admission, if a possible sentence of one year or more may have been imposed or if convicted of two crimes involving moral turpitude at any time irrespective of the sentenced imposed. A crime involving moral turpitude is one which involves acts that are inherently evil, depraved or wrong by any society’s standards such as theft, fraud, or crimes of violence. Many crimes such as disorderly conduct, simple assault or driving under the influence typically do not involve moral turpitude. I suggest that you consult with an immigration attorney to properly understand the immigration consequences, if any, for your particular conviction. Q: I recently applied to remove the condition on my permanent residence and have received a receipt notice which states that my conditional resident status has been extended for one year. I wish to travel but my conditional residence card has expired. Can I travel? A: You may travel and return to the US using the receipt notice for the application to remove the condition on your residence. Make sure you also have the expired green card with you. Q: I wish to take a re-entry permit so that I can return to India for more than one year. When I am there in India, do I still need to file US tax returns as I am not going to have any income in the US?

xperiments with Truth: Gandhi and Images of Nonviolence is the first international project to explore the resonance of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi’s (18671948) ethics of non-violence, or “satyagraha,” in the visual arts. This exhibition presents approximately 130 works spanning several centuries and includes paintings, drawings, photographs, prints, sculptures, rare books, and films by artists from Africa, the Americas, Asia, and Europe. The exhibition’s themes echo the expansive humanitarian concerns of the Menil Collection’s founders, John and Dominique de Menil. Following their example, we aim to create a platform for international conversation on world-wide issues surrounding human rights, compassion, civil disobedience, and progress through non-violence. A renowned photograph of Gandhi’s last possessions, a carefully constructed “still-life” of the few objects he owned at the time of his death (two dinner bowls, wooden fork and spoon, porcelain monkeys, diary, watch, prayer book, spittoon, letter openers, and two pairs of sandals), is the catalyst for the exhibition. The strik-
Among the diverse artworks and artifacts on display will be iconic photographs by Henri Cartier-Bresson from the tumultuous time of India’s independence and partition in 1947, along with another group taken just before and immediately after Gandhi’s assassination in 1948. Portraits and documents of Gandhi’s most important predecessors and contemporaries (Ruskin, Thoreau, Tolstoy, Sojourner Truth), as well as his most eminent followers and leaders of significant movements of social and political reform in the last decades are included. The exhibition will also present major works illustrating the complex artistic visualizations of non-violence throughout world religions including iconography based on themes of asceticism, compassion, abolition of slavery, and racial equality. Finally, artworks by modern and contemporary artists that resonate with Gandhi’s vision and contemplate in a critical way the unfinished conflicts of past and present will appear throughout the exhibition. The exhibition will include works by living artists such as Mel Chin, Marlene Dumas, Suzan Frecon, Theaster Gates, Robert Gober, Shilpa Gupta, Amar Kanwar, William Kentridge, Kimsooja, Ai Weiwei,
and Zarina. Also on display will be examples by Eve Arnold, Margaret Bourke-White, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Dan Flavin, Yves Klein, René Magritte, Agnes Martin, Barnett Newman, Robert Rauschenberg, Mark Rothko, Jean Tinguely, Shômei Tômatsu, and Andy Warhol. The opening events at the Menil Collection will coincide with the 145th anniversary of Gandhi’s birth, October 2, 2014, and the exhibition will remain on view until February 1, 2015, before traveling to the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum in Geneva. In Houston the presentation will activate a city-wide initiative at various sites within the Menil campus and many cultural organizations in the city. Curated by Menil Director, Josef Helfenstein, in consultation with Indian artist Amar Kanwar, Experiments with Truth will be accompanied by a publication intended to introduce the exhibition’s significant figures, ideas, historical events and trends to a non-specialist audience. This exhibition is generously supported by Clare Casademont and Michael Metz; The John R. Homage to the Grand gurus of the Mewati Gharana.
Pandit Suman Ghosh, founder of Gurukul, Saadhana Pariwar addressing his disciples. by Sucheta Roy
I
ndian Classical music lovers in Houston consider it a privilege and a blessing that Pandit Suman Ghosh chose this city above all others to make his home and establish his Gurukul, Saadhana Pariwar. Enriching thousands of lives with pure Hindustani Classical music in the Mewati Gharana tradition, Pandit Suman Ghosh is adored as much by his disciples as by their families. The Gurukul has just staged, for the second year in a
row, about 70 solo performers in a truly unique series titled Saadhana Samvid in various locations of this city. On 7th September 2014, under the aegis of CICMH (Center for Indian Classical Music of Houston), the disciples of Acharya Varishth Pandit Suman Ghosh had the opportunity to honor and celebrate their Guruji. The event was preceded by Panditji’s 2-hour-long live radio interview, the previous evening, on the well-known Open Forum program catering to an audience of
over 26,000 listeners worldwide. Panditji started the symbolic Guru Purnima taalim in a playful manner, with Panditji challenging his students to identify the raga if possible, guess which parent structure it has evolved from (known as a ‘Thaat’) and the notes used in the raga by listening to a short segment of a sitar rendition by the legendary Pandit Ravi Shankarji. The raga was Jhinjhoti, Thaat Khamaj. The revered Guru then taught a bandish in this raga in drut Teental (a moderately

fast 16 beat cycle). This was followed by a short introduction to raga ‘Alhaiya Bilawal’. By this time, the room was charged with a positive energy that is quite impossible to describe in words. After a short break, the second session ensued with ‘Akhand Gaayan’ (meaning unbroken singing) as the core theme, as conceptualized by Panditji himself. Several groups of students took turns to join their Guru on the stage to present a short repertoire. While they took their places on stage, Panditji, the remainder of his students as well as the audience continued singing. The flow was smooth and ‘akhand’ as it was meant to be. The session ended with Panditji leading his disciples in a bhajan dedicated to all the Gurus and Grand-Gurus of the Mewati Gha-
rana and to the greatest Guru of all, the Almighty. The evening was graced by the presence of Shri Pramod Kulkarni, Editor in Chief of Indo American News Houston, his wife Smt Jyoti Kulkarni as well as Shri Govind Shetty of the Indian Music Society of Houston. In true Indian tradition, all disciples received blessing from Panditji and his wife, Guru-Ma Shashikalaji Ghosh. The evening concluded also in true Indian tradition, with a sumptuous dinner, lovingly catered by ‘Madras Pavilion’. Heartiest felicitations to Panditji and his Gurukul on embarking on another year of complete commitment and dedication to the cause of Indian Classical music.

PETA declares New York vegan capital of 2014

(AFP PHOTO/Jewel Samad /Getty Images) NEW YORK, September 17, 2014 (AFP) - Animal rights charity PETA declared New York vegan capital of the world on Wednesday as Scottish actor Alan Cumming unveiled a replica of the Manhattan skyline carved out of vegetables. Dan Mathews, senior vice president of PETA, said the Big Apple was “2014 most vegan-friendly city” of the year due to a first vegetarian public school, vegan fast-food outlets and increasing offshoots of vegan gourmet restaurants.
The vegetable skyline took three days to carve from squash, taro root, radishes, eggplant, broccoli, carrots, lemongrass, banana leaves and beets by food artist James Parker, organizers said. It was shown to New York mayor Bill de Blasio, with whom Cumming said he discussed Thursday’s independence referendum in Scotland. Cumming, who on Wednesday published an op-ed in The New York
Times calling for independence, told AFP he would not be able to vote because he was in New York. City Council member Corey Johnson said he was “thrilled” that New York was number one in vegetarian and vegan dining, saying there were more than 140 vegetarian restaurants in the city. PETA, known for its media stunts, is the largest animal rights organization in the world, with more than three million members and supporters.
Mathews said celebrities such as Beyonce and Jennifer Lopez were among those who had taken the 22-day vegan cleanse, saying that incorporating vegan elements into diets was healthy.
E
xtreme athlete Steph Davis is used to living life on the edge, but not when it comes to her health: She relies on her vegan diet to keep her fit and ready to climb the next mountain—literally. If a vegan diet can give an extreme athlete the energy she needs, think what it could do for you! Animal products have been linked to our nation’s biggest killers, including heart disease, strokes, diabetes, obesity, and cancer. Steph teamed up with PETA for this ad celebrating how veganism helps our health, the planet, and animals.
“I am a vegan and to be in a city which is so vegan friendly is great,” Cumming, who went vegan a couple of years ago and currently stars on Broadway in “Cabaret,” told reporters. “Everyone realizes that these things are delicious and good for you and I think it’s an indication of how we’re becoming more conscious about what we do to our bodies,” he added. Previous winners of “most veganfriendly city” are Los Angeles, London and Austin, Texas, Mathews said.

Miss America 2015 Kira Kazantsev from New York, being crowned by Nina Davuluri.
WASHINGTON, September 15, 2014 (AFP) - So it’s official: America’s most beautiful women come from New York. Miss New York Kira Kazantsev was crowned Miss America late Sunday, the third straight year that the Big Apple’s local beauty queen has gone on to win the national pageant. The former Miss America, Nina Davuluri, also from New York, ceded her crown to Kazantsev after the competition at Atlantic City in New Jersey. Kazantsev, 22, isn’t just a pretty face. She chose protecting women against domestic violence as her advocacy issue and says she’s aiming for a
master’s degree in business administration and a law degree. The crowning kicks off a yearlong national speaking tour and appearances as a national goodwill ambassador for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. And her Miss America title comes with a $50,000 scholarship to continue her education. For the talent portion of the competition, Kazantsev performed a version of the Pharrell Williams song “Happy” in which she sat cross-legged on stage and used a red plastic cup and the palms of her hands to sound the rhythm.

ening disease and the leading cause of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) in children. Cardiomyopathy is a chronic disease of the heart muscle that affects the heart’s ability to pump blood. Some children who have the disease can be symptom-free and are unknowingly at risk for SCA. Approximately 2,000 people under 25 die of SCA every year according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, but there are preventative measures for families. “In many cases, if cardiomyopathy is detected early and managed properly, sudden cardiac death can be prevented,” says Lisa Yue, a parent who lost two children to cardiomyopathy and founder of the Children’s Cardiomyopathy Foundation (CCF). The Foundation is launching the first Children’s Cardiomyopathy Awareness Month in September to call attention to the disease. “Knowing the symptoms and risk factors for cardiomyopathy can help save lives.” Know the Symptoms Currently there is no formal cardiac screening process for children. While pediatricians can respond to more obvious symptoms, identifying pediatric cardiomyopathy can be challenging because some affected children are symptomfree. It is not uncommon for cardiomyopathy to be missed or misdiagnosed as a cold, flu or asthma. Symptoms include shortness of breath, rapid breathing, fainting, chest pain, dizziness, heart palpitations and fatigue. Infants may experience poor weight gain, difficulty breathing, excessive sweating or lethargy. It is important for parents to communicate concerns to the pediatrician. Know the Risk Factors “Cardiomyopathy can occur in any child and be inherited or
acquired through a viral infection or from cancer chemotherapy,” explains Steven Lipshultz, M.D., pediatrician-in-chief of Children’s Hospital of Michigan and chair of CCF’s medical advisory board. Since the majority of cardiomyopathies are inherited, understanding a family’s cardiac history is the best way to prevent premature death. Hereditary risk factors include having a family member who is disabled by heart disease, has died of heart disease before age 50, or was diagnosed with Long QT syndrome, cardiomyopathy, Marfan syndrome or a heart rhythm issue. Family members who exhibit symptoms such as chest pain, discomfort upon exertion, fatigue, fainting or high blood pressure should be evaluated by a cardiologist. Protecting Athletes
At-Risk
Young
Adolescents with an underlying heart condition like cardiomyopathy are at a higher risk for SCA due to increased physical activity and certain body changes. SCA is the top cause of death on school property, and according to the American Heart Association these deaths occur most commonly in highintensity sports. To help keep young athletes safe, Senator Robert Menendez, Representatives Lois Capps and Bill Pascrell, Children’s Cardiomyopathy Foundation and the National Athletic Trainers’ Association introduced the Supporting Athletes, Families, and Educators to Protect the Lives of Athletic Youth (SAFE PLAY) Act, with provisions to protect student athletes from SCA. For more information about cardiomyopathy, visit www. childrenscardiomyopathy.org. Whether children are at home, in school or on the sports field, it is important for parents to understand the symptoms and risk factors of the disease. SOURCE: StatePoint

P
akistani actor Fawad Khan says as much as he is excited about his hit TV drama ‘Humsafar‘ premiering on Indian television, he is also nervous about audience’s reaction to the show and hopes it lives up to the hype surrounding it. The 23-episode drama is touted as the highest-rated Pakistani TV serial ever and has acquired a fan-following in the country. The serial also received praise for Fawad‘s performance and his on-screen chemistry with co-star Mahira Khan. “I have seen the promos of ‘Humsafar‘ on Zindagi and I am thankful to all those who
have loved the show before and who are waiting for it now because the show is special to me. But I am also scared about its outcome here, I just hope it fares well and people like it. I have mixed feelings about it,” Fawad told PTI. The 32-year-old actor is making his Bollywood debut with upcoming Sonam Kapoorstarrer ‘Khoobsurat’, which is the remake of Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s 1980 film of the same name. Fawad, who has already charmed the Indian audience with his performance in Pakistani TV show ‘Zindagi Gulzar Hai’, says though the drama
has given him a fan base here, it has also put the pressure of fans’ expectations. It is true that ‘ZGH’ has given me a foot-hold in the industry and people like me before my film has released. This is an advantage but it can be a disadvantage too because now people expect a certain performance from me. So, that adds to the pressure. I just hope they like me in ‘Khoobsurat’ as much as they liked me in the show,” Fawad said. ‘Khoobsurat’, directed by debutant Shahshank Ghosh and produced by Anil Kapoor will release on September 19, this Friday.

Countries scramble to make up for ‘precious time’ lost in Ebola fight by Catherine BOITARD

The United Nations is appealing for $600 million (465 million euros) for supplies, with countries asked to send doctors, nurses, beds, trucks, equipment and other vehicles to the affected nations. “Our collective response to date has not been sufficient,” said Power, whose country holds the presidency of the 15member council this month. “The situation on the ground is dire and is growing worse by the day.”
When To Take Social Security Retirement Benefits-Early or Late? orkers planning for their retirement should be aware that retirement benefits depend on age at retirement. If a worker begins receiving benefits before his/her normal (or full) retirement age, the worker will receive a reduced benefit. A worker can choose to retire as early as age 62, but doing so may result in a reduction of as much as 30 percent. Starting to receive benefits after normal retirement age may result in larger benefits. With delayed retirement credits, a person can receive his or her largest benefit by retiring at age 70.
The worst-ever Ebola contagion has killed more than 2,400 people in west Africa since it erupted earlier this year and aid agencies deplore an inadequate international response to an emergency that shows no sign of abating.
The UN Security Council will hold an emergency session on Thursday to discuss ways to ramp up the global response to the epidemic, the US Ambassador to the United Nations, Samantha Power, announced in New York.

RUSSELS, September 15, 2014 (AFP) The European Union urged the international community Monday to boost aid to make up for “precious time” lost in the response to west Africa’s deadly Ebola outbreak, as the UN Security Council announced an emergency meeting on the crisis.
The United Nations said last week that Ebola cases are multiplying “faster than the capacity to manage them” and the president of Liberia, with more than half the victims, has warned the outbreak is destroying the country’s social fabric.

Early retirement reduces benefits European Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response Kristalina Georgieva (C) attends a meeting to coordinate EU aid to help fight the Ebola outbreak in Africa, September 15, 2014, in Brussels (AFP Photo/Emmanuel Dunand) Several months into the crisis, an international response is beginning to get on track, with both the European Union and the United States stepping up plans to make up the lost ground. “We are behind the curve and for a reason,” EU Humanitarian Aid Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva said at the special talks in Brussels to devise a Europe-wide response to the outbreak. “When the warning signs were there, it took some time for the international community to pay attention. Precious time was lost.” To make up the ground, the commission last week announced 150 million euros ($195 million) in aid to fight the crisis and Georgieva on Monday urged member states
to add more. - ‘Important moment’ The United States is also set to raise its response. On Tuesday, US President Barack Obama will ask Congress to approve a request for $88 million to help tackle the outbreak. Obama will also travel to Atlanta to meet medical authorities at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a hub for Ebola research, and announce new aid to affected regions in west Africa. The Pentagon has already announced it will send a 25-bed field hospital to Liberia and the US military could help direct supplies, set up tent hospitals and deploy medical personnel needed to isolate and treat those
suffering with the disease. “This is an important moment in the fight against Ebola,” said French Health Minister Marisol Touraine in Brussels, adding that France was also to set up a treatment centre in Guinea. At the EU meeting, a dozen countries offered to boost aid, including Ireland and Germany. EU officials meanwhile urged countries not to give in to fear. “We must isolate the disease, but not the country,” said Tonio Borg, the EU’s Health Commissioner. He was referring to international airlines that have cut links to the affected countries, which also include Sierra Leone, Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The call was echoed by Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama, who during a visit to Monrovia on Monday called for an end to measures “taken in panic”. “I believe that as long as all of us are implementing appropriate measures, we can allow normal economic activities to take place,” said Mahama, who also heads the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). The tropical Ebola virus can fell its victims within days,
In the case of early retirement, a benefit is reduced 5/9 of one percent for each month before normal retirement age, up to 36 months. If the number of months exceeds 36, then the benefit is further reduced 5/12 of one percent per month. For example, if the number of reduction months is 60 (the maximum number for retirement at 62 when normal retirement age is 67), then the benefit is reduced by 30 percent. This maximum reduction is calculated as 36 months times 5/9 of 1 percent plus 24 months times 5/12 of 1 percent. Delayed retirement increases benefits Delayed retirement credit is generally given for retirement after the normal retirement age. To receive full credit, you must be insured at your normal retirement age. No credit is given after age 69. If you retire before age 70, some of your delayed retirement credits will not be applied until the January after you start benefits. The calculator gives you the amount with all credits applied for comparison purposes. What Is The Best Age To Start Your Benefits? The answer is that there is no one “best age” for everyone and, ultimately, it is your choice. You should make an informed decision about when
causing severe fever and muscle pain, weakness, vomiting and diarrhoea -- in some cases shutting down organs and causing unstoppable bleeding.

Your monthly benefit amount can differ substantially based on the age when you start receiving benefits. If you decide to start benefits: • before your full retirement age, your benefit will be smaller but you will receive it for a longer period of time. • at your full retirement age or later, you will receive a larger monthly benefit for a shorter period of time. The amount you receive when you first get benefits sets the base for the amount you will receive for the rest of your life. There are also some other things you may want to consider when you make that decision: Are you still working? Do you come from a longlived family? How is your health? Will you still have health insurance? Are you eligible for benefits on someone else’s record? Do you have other income to support you if you decide to delay taking your benefits? Will other family members qualify for benefits with you on your record? Whether the income will make difference in your monthly budget? Science to the rescue of Art 2nd International Conference on
Genomics: Keynote Address delivered by Dr. Dronamraju
T
he 2nd International Conference on Genomics and Pharmacogenomics was held in Raleigh, North Carolina, during 8 - 10, September, 2014. Delegates came from China, Japan, U.K., Italy, USA, Canada, India, Brazil, Russia and many other countries. The conference covered a wide ranging series of topics in Genomics and its applications in Cancer research, Birth Defects, Diabetes, Drug research, Alzeheimer’s Disease, and and many other diseases and birth defects.

technology in art conservation at the molecular level.
PARIS, September 14, 2014 (AFP) - Vincent van Gogh’s “Sunflowers” are losing their yellow cheer and the unsettling apricot horizon in Edvard Munch’s “The Scream” is turning a dull ivory.
Synchrotrons, stadium-sized machines that produce beams of bright X-ray light, are used to analyse the chemical degradation of famous artworks gracing the museums of the world.
Some of our most treasured paintings are fading, warn experts who would like more money for the use of sophisticated technology to capture the masters’ original palettes before the works are unrecognisably blighted.
Much more science is needed to understand the chemical reactions that cause colour changes in canvases, in order to stop them, said Jennifer Mass, an art conservationist from Winterthur Museum in Delaware, who also attended the meeting.
“Our cultural heritage is suffering from a disease,” Robert van Langh, director of conservation and restoration at Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum, told AFP in Paris this week.
“There are heaps of researchers ready to do this work, but very little money.”
“These priceless icons of our culture are deteriorating,” he said. And the amount spent on conserving them “should be multiplied by ten.” Van Langh was speaking on the sidelines of a conference on the use of synchrotron radiation
“The goal is more preservation than restoration,” said Mass, adding that restorers would only in very rare cases touch up the original work of an artist. - Fading like a flower Experts already know that the iconic still life “Sunflowers” is browner today than when van Gogh captured it on canvas in 1888. It turns out the Dutch Impressionist painter had opted for industrial pigments, then new on the market, for his yellows, according to Belgian chemist Koen Janssens of the University of Antwerp.
Understanding the degenerative process would allow museums to display the precious works in the appropriate light, atmosphere and humidity.
Exposed to air, the yellow in cadmium, also used by Munch for his 1910 work “The Scream”, loses its brightness, while ultraviolet light -- as from the Sun -- turns it brown.
But technology would also allow “digital reconstruction” of original pieces, as they were envisaged by their creators, for posterity.
Janssens has also worked on van Gogh’s famous “Flowers in a Blue Vase”, which has suffered a similar fate but for a different reason.
In his Keynote Address, Dr. Krishna Dronamraju issued a warning against misuse of genetic applications, and the need to be vigilant to maintain professional integrity and high standards. He emphasized the special contribution of Genomics to the development of vaccines for Ebola and Malaria which will be available soon for the mass market. He also warned against long term patents of discoveries, such as the genes for Breast Cancer (brc1 and brc2) and Ovarian Cancer which have blocked further re-

Javadekar to represent India at UN Climate Summit on September 23 by Vishwa Mohan, TNN NEW DELHI: India will be represented by environment minister Prakash Javadekar at the UN Climate Summit which is to be held in New York on September 23. One-day summit is being organized to give a ‘political’ momentum to the climate deal negotiations ahead of the December Peru talks. Though the UN secretary general Ban-Ki-moon wanted Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend it, the latter prefers to skip the meet as India does not want to commit anything at such forum before the world
communities arrive at a global climate deal in Paris next year. Chinese president Xi Jinping will also not attend the Summit which is to be attended by many world leaders including US president Barack Obama, UK prime minister David Cameron, French president Francois Hollande and South Korean president Park Geunhye among others. Although Javadekar is not expected to commit anything at the forum, he is learnt to have given a task to, at least, tell the world communities what all In-
dia has voluntarily been doing to cut greenhouse gas emissions for the last over six years. He may also use the occasion to remind the developed countries of their responsibilities and seek their support - both financial as well as technical - in helping out developing countries without diluting the fundamentals of the UNFCCC framework and the Kyoto protocol. Javadekar will leave on September 19 for USA to attend the summit. Courtesy:TNN

US high-speed trading firm Text of the Federal Reserve monetary fined $16 mn for low capital policy statement
W
ASHINGTON, September 17, 2014 (AFP) - The Federal Reserve said Wednesday it would maintain its ultra-low interest rates for a “considerable time” after it winds up its assetpurchase stimulus program. Here is the full text of the Federal Open Market Committee’s statement after the conclusion of a two-day monetary policy meeting:
US high-speed trading firm fined $16 mn for low capital
N
EW YORK - US regulators fined a highfrequency trading firm $16 million for violating minimum capital requirements, a record sanction for such a violation, the Securities and Exchange Commission announced Wednesday. Latour Trading agreed to the penalty to settle the charges after regulators discovered the New York-based company held inadequate capital to cover very large trading positions on 19 of 24 dates investigated in a twoyear stretch. The prior record fine for such a violation was $400,000. During the 2010-2011 period, Latour’s transactions at times accounted for as much as nine percent of the trading volume in equity securities for the entire US market, the SEC said. The rule “is critical to ensuring that broker-dealers are able to sustain their businesses and
that investors are protected,” said Andrew Ceresney, director of the SEC’s enforcement division, in a statement “These penalties demonstrate both the seriousness of the conduct here and the increase more generally in our penalties across the board.” Broker-dealers are required to hold a minium level of capital to meet obligations to customers and counterparties and to have sufficient additional resources to wind down the business in an orderly fashion if the firm fails. Latour’s violations centered on its failure to make correct deductions based on its trades, leading it to understate its risk and inflate its capital position by as much as $28 million, the SEC said. The agency also fined Nicholas Niquet, the chief operating officer at Latour when the violations began. Niquet agreed to pay $150,000 to settle the
charges, the SEC said. Ceresney, in a conference call with reporters, said the highpriced settlement does not signal any special crackdown targeting high-frequency trading firms, but was part of the ongoing investigation by the SEC and other regulators of high-speed transactions. Critics say that high-frequency traders skim profits from clients who order a stock at one price, only to end up paying more than the quoted amount after the firm pushes up the price through a series of lightning-quick transactions. Latour is owned by New York-based Tower Research Capital, a financial services firm that bills itself as a specialist in quantitative trading and investment strategies, including the development of proprietary trading algorithms. Tower did not have an immediate comment.
“Information received since the Federal Open Market Committee met in July suggests that economic activity has been expanding at a moderate pace. Some indicators of labor market conditions have shown further improvement in recent months, but the unemployment rate remains elevated. Household spending and business fixed investment advanced, and the housing sector has been strengthening, but mortgage rates have risen further and fiscal policy is restraining economic growth. Apart from fluctuations due to changes in energy prices, inflation has been running below the Committee’s longer-run objective, but longer-term inflation expectations have remained stable. “Consistent with its statutory mandate, the Committee seeks to foster maximum employment and price stability. The Committee expects that, with appropriate policy accommodation, economic growth will pick up from its recent pace and the unemployment rate will gradually decline toward levels the Committee judges consistent with its dual mandate. The Committee sees the downside risks to the outlook for the economy and the labor market as having diminished, on net, since last fall, but the tightening of financial conditions observed in recent months, if sustained, could slow the pace of improvement in the economy and labor market. The Committee recognizes that inflation persistently below its 2 percent objective could pose risks to economic performance, but it anticipates that inflation will move back toward its objective
over the medium term.
“Taking into account the extent of federal fiscal retrenchment, the Committee sees the improvement in economic activity and labor market conditions since it began its asset purchase program a year ago as consistent with growing underlying strength in the broader economy. However, the Committee decided to await more evidence that progress will be sustained before adjusting the pace of its purchases. Accordingly, the Committee decided to continue purchasing additional agency mortgage-backed securities at a pace of $40 billion per month and longer-term Treasury securities at a pace of $45 billion per month. The Committee is maintaining its existing policy of reinvesting principal payments from its holdings of agency debt and agency mortgage-backed securities in agency mortgagebacked securities and of rolling over maturing Treasury securities at auction. Taken together, these actions should maintain downward pressure on longerterm interest rates, support mortgage markets, and help to make broader financial conditions more accommodative, which in turn should promote a stronger economic recovery and help to ensure that inflation, over time, is at the rate most consistent with the Committee’s dual mandate. “The Committee will closely monitor incoming information on economic and financial developments in coming months and will continue its purchases of Treasury and agency mortgagebacked securities, and employ its other policy tools as appropriate, until the outlook for the labor market has improved substantially in a context of price stability. In judging when to moderate the pace of asset purchases, the Committee will, at its coming meetings, assess whether incoming information continues to support the Committee’s expectation of ongoing improvement in labor market conditions and inflation moving back toward its longerrun objective. Asset purchases are not on a preset course, and the Committee’s decisions about their pace will remain contingent
on the Committee’s economic outlook as well as its assessment of the likely efficacy and costs of such purchases.
“To support continued progress toward maximum employment and price stability, the Committee today reaffirmed its view that a highly accommodative stance of monetary policy will remain appropriate for a considerable time after the asset purchase program ends and the economic recovery strengthens. In particular, the Committee decided to keep the target range for the federal funds rate at 0 to 1/4 percent and currently anticipates that this exceptionally low range for the federal funds rate will be appropriate at least as long as the unemployment rate remains above 6-1/2 percent, inflation between one and two years ahead is projected to be no more than a half percentage point above the Committee’s 2 percent longer-run goal, and longer-term inflation expectations continue to be well anchored. In determining how long to maintain a highly accommodative stance of monetary policy, the Committee will also consider other information, including additional measures of labor market conditions, indicators of inflation pressures and inflation expectations, and readings on financial developments. When the Committee decides to begin to remove policy accommodation, it will take a balanced approach consistent with its longer-run goals of maximum employment and inflation of 2 percent. “Voting for the FOMC monetary policy action were: Ben S. Bernanke, Chairman; William C. Dudley, Vice Chairman; James Bullard; Charles L. Evans; Jerome H. Powell; Eric S. Rosengren; Jeremy C. Stein; Daniel K. Tarullo; and Janet L. Yellen. Voting against the action was Esther L. George, who was concerned that the continued high level of monetary accommodation increased the risks of future economic and financial imbalances and, over time, could cause an increase in longterm inflation expectations.”

Sometimes you may feel as if you can conquer anything and maybe you can, but remember to thank those who have helped you on your way. They need to feel your respect & your love. They’ll feel it best if you show it through your actions, not just your words.
Taurus (B,V,U) 21 April to 20 May
Scorpio (N,Y)23 Oct to 21 Nov
The week end’s activities will provide you with food, friends and good conversations. The rest you get will help you to replenish your energy and improve your perspective. Having to ‘rescue’ is likely. It appears especially ‘needy’ and there may be the need for both armchair shrinking and refereeing! Emotional ‘tantrums’ are also likely and your calm and constant intersession may be required, especially at big events or gatherings a ‘distance away’.
Rediscovery of higher education & using reliable ideas to accomplish your goals. Miscommunications or misunderstandings may occur, if you don’t choose your words carefully. What solution that had long gone by the wayside, may now become a viable one. Listen to others with expertise to overcome distance & language problems. Your ability to communicate on many levels will help others to understand your motivations. Be sensitive to those who are affected by your acts.
Sagittarius (BH,F,DH,TH) 22 Nov to 21 Dec
Gemini (K,CHH,GH) 21 May to 20 June Find new ways to succeed. Past performance will not carry much weight and will not have any bearing on the current situation. You need to find your voice and figure out how to use it to your best advantage. Before moving ahead on your own, think about ways to unite others. Human emotions cannot rule you, this time. You must try to look at things on and a more intellectual plane. Try your best to stay clear of those who try to bring you down to their level. You need to look beyond the immediate to understand how the bigger picture works.
Take the time to read, write & express your thoughts on paper. By doing so, you may feel an awakening of ideas, you shared with someone, long ago. That person may remind you of something very important that you forgot. Stress that seemed so intense, lately, may lessen, as the week goes by. Take the time to enjoy all of those favorite things that you really like to do. Don’t be afraid to express yourself. You need to open your mind & your heart to someone who shares your goals. There are no restrictions for you, this week.
Capricorn (KH,J) 22 Dec to 20 Jan
Cancer (D,H) 21 June to 22 July Bide your time. You need to continue to play the waiting game. Others want answers right away, but you should take some time to analyze the whole picture. If you try to push the process faster, something will hit the fan. Unfounded suspicions and accusations will only make others more uncomfortable. It’s better to keep quiet than to be negative. A surprise will shake things up and provide you with some answers. Try to be as discreet as possible. You’re ready to accept the news but not everybody is. If you expect the circumstances to change, you’ll be ahead of the competition.
Your stars show you to be rather vulnerable to misunderstandings, minor accidents and clashes or frustrations. Once we clear the emotions and you have ‘processed them well’ you appears enjoyable and a ‘big relief’ in a variety of ways. Elders, pets and ‘dependent youth’ may need special attention. Be in a personal relationship or a business dealing, you will reach a very positive goal. Focus your energy full force. You’ll seem to have a keener understanding of how things work. Look behind the scene & you’ll see all of your options.
Aquarius (G,S,SH) 21 Jan to 19 Feb
Leo (M) 23 July to 22 August Motivation and positive reinforcement. Recent events have put you in a position of power. You’ll feel moved into proclaiming an alliance between yourself and your peers. Your message will come across in a way that encourages others want to join in. You know just which emotions to draw out of others and when to do it. You could combine valid points of view to provide a dynamic effort. Supporters will rally for your cause. Look upward and forward. Doubts should not be considered an option.
Your stars show fatigue, irritation and multiple ‘annoyances’ are likely and you may need delegate out duty and ‘make the most/best’ of more than one situation, especially IF you are entertaining visitors or have ‘big events’ planned for days. Facts, figures and ‘the bottom line’ must be taken seriously and their weight ‘considered first’. Your investment of time, effort, money and ‘heart and soul’ are key and your reputation stands to either be beefed up and/or expanded OR ‘toasted though impatience’. Make sure it is NOT the latter!
Pisces (D,CH,Z) 20 Feb to 20 March
Virgo (P) 23 August to 22 September Passion, excitement and the start of new adventures. Negative energy will have no power over the positive flow that you are rolling on, but remember, you need to learn to walk first before you can run. The warmth you feel inside will spark your passion for life. Get out there and enjoy all that life has to give. Look past others misgivings in order to take advantage of their expertise. You may not understand all the workings of a new technology, but you can figure out how to use it for your own purpose. Check your list and make sure you cover all the bases.
QR
Excellent results are likely early in the week and upgrades to new employment or opportunities are likely. ANY one who travel for a living, especially driving jobs, must be very careful as they may encounter ‘dangerous situations’ or be delayed or effected by ‘accidents’. Power people may be talking ‘all about money’ and every ‘bottom line’ may fall ‘under scrutiny’. Be ready with explanations, proof or ‘pitches’. Take the responsibility for your actions. You’ll have many options from which to pick from. A show of strength will improve your standing in the community.
