The Day of the Volkswagen

Car of the Show Nick Stellatos purchased his Karmann Ghia early in 2005, that same day he began the restoration process and very early into the project realised the car needed a lot of work? The body was stripped of it’s cream paint to bare metal, heater channels, rocker panels, engine bay and the floor pan were all replaced together with a door and the decklid. A good majority of the metal work was done by hand and rollers which took many months. The body and undercarriage was sprayed in Glasurit, the 1776cc engine and dual Kadrons Nick rebuilt and converted the engine to a 75amp alternator. It has a Drycell Odyssey Battery which is hidden in the quarter panel, custom decklid latch and surrounding panels. The whole interior was a mess,

so everything was replaced, even the windows, every nut and bolt is either stainless steel or chromed, front seats were returned to original Karmann spec, the customised luggage compartment and under the hood panels are dressed in a complementary Tan and everything else is new.

The 15” wheels have new chrome outers, 4” up front wearing 145/65 and 6” on rear wearing 195/55 tyres, the suspension is a 4 valve air management system, air sleeve shocks up front and bags on the rear supported by a Viair compressor with a 2 gallon tank and this Day of the Volkswagen Show Winner drives like a prestige car. The project consumed Nick for around 20 months from start to finish and all would not have been possible without the help and patients from his father, friends and girlfriend Stef.

Air pressure switches for the suspension are hidden in the glove box and boasts an electric antenna, pearl white steering wheel, empi shifter and custom speaker grill. The dash gauges have been reconditioned and venetian blinds add to the overall look.

be some VWs left out there, so pass the word around and see if we can encourage more to come along next year.

The other good news is that some of the smaller classes are getting enough cars turning up warrant a separate trophy next year so stay in the loop. Next year the big canteen will be open so there hopefully won’t be the long queue for food.

President’s Report Michael Cronin, VWCV President Welcome to the December edition of the Wagensville News. Well the Day of The Volkswagen is over for another year and what a day it was, we had an increase of approximately fifty percent over last years numbers. To start I would like to thank our two main sponsors Francis from South Yarra Volkswagen and Shannons Car Insurance and the other businesses that support the club, you will find them listed in the back of the magazine. Don’t forget when dealing with them to let them know that you are a member of the club. A big thank you is in order to all those that helped in organising the event and to those who helped on the day, especially Andrew Ermel who did nearly all the hard work for me and David who’s prepaid entries was a great step forward and made a big difference to getting the cars into the grounds. On to the event itself, from all reports Cranbourne was a good choice of venue especially as it allowed us to group the cars together and with a bit of rearranging we will be able to fit even more in next year. Melbourne had so many working VWs and the row of over 60 Kombis was impressive, I know there must still

Planning for next year is already well underway with a busy calendar already worked out. The first event is going to be an impromptu camping trip in late January. Kennett River will be on again on the first weekend in March and hopefully proceeded by a visit to Ray’s Outdoor Centre to stock up on those camping essentials. Unfortunately the numbers have become too big for central catering so you will have to fend for yourself this time, with luck the surf may be up and the fish biting. I want to try and encourage more people to get involved in club activities, so if you have any suggestions of what you want to see or you want to run an event bring your ideas along to the general meeting or drop us a line via email or snail mail and remember your idea does not have to appeal to everybody. Christmas is nearly upon us so it is appropriate to remind everyone that the December meeting is on the second Tuesday not the third as usual. So be there on the 12th. Details of the activities planned for the night can be found in the magazine. Also a reminder that there is no general meeting in January and the next magazine will be out in February, this lets us give our editor, who is doing a sterling job in producing the magazine a well earned rest.

1970 saw larger taillights with integrated reverse lights, as well as squarish wrap-around turn signals, versus the “bullet” style used on earlier cars. The taillights were revised again in 1972, becoming taller and wider, with more visibility from the side. Large safety bumpers were added for 1973. Additionally, 1973 saw the removal of the unusable back seat as a means of skirting new seat belt regulations. Where the seat was once located, there was now a simple shelf with no back rest. In late 1974, the car was discontinued mainly due to increasing safety regulations and sluggish sales. In 1962, Volkswagen introduced the Type 34 Karmann Ghia, based on its new Type 3 platform. It was the launch vehicle for Volkswagen’s new 1500cc engine. It was the fastest, most luxurious, and most expensive Volkswagen at the time.

Karmann Ghia The Volkswagen Karmann Ghia was truly a special car, beautiful, timeless in design and was wonderfully affordable, reliable and fun to drive. The Karmann Ghia was a twoseater sports car marketed by Volkswagen, designed by the Italian firm Ghia, and built by German coach builder Karmann. Over 445,000 Karmann Ghias were produced between 1955 and 1974. In the early 1950s, Volkswagen was producing small, fuel efficient, reliable automobiles (like the Volkswagen Beetle ) but as the world recovered from World War II, consumers began to demand more stylish and elegant vehicles.

and in August 1955 the first Karmann Ghia was built in Osnabrück, Germany. Public reaction to the curvy Karmann Ghia was excellent, and over 10,000 were sold in the first year, exceeding Volkswagen’s expectations.

Since the first Karmann Ghias used the same 36 hp engine as the Beetle, the car was not suitable as a true sports car, however, the car’s styling and “Beetle reliable” parts made up for this shortfall. The Karmann Ghia also shared engine development with the Beetle Executives at Volkswagen decided that it was necessary to produce an as the Type 1 engine grew larger with time, finally arriving at an “image” car to satisfy the demands engine displacement of 1584cc. of post-war automobile buyers. The design and prototype were well In August 1957 a convertible received by Volkswagen executives, (cabriolet) version was introduced.

4 Volkswagen Club of Victoria Inc.

The car was slightly redesigned for the 1960 model year. The most notable exterior changes were the car’s front “nostril” grilles (which were replaced with a wider design), the headlights (which were moved up the fender), and the rear taillight lenses (which became taller and more rounded, sometimes referred to as “cats-eye” lenses). Cars made from 1955 to 1959 are referred to as “lowlights,” due to the lower placement of the headlights, and are much sought after by Karmann Ghia purists and collectors.

One interesting option was an electrically operated sliding steel sunroof, a feature not found even in the Karmann Ghia’s similarly priced Porsche cousins. The styling was more squared-off, versus the curved appearance of the original Karmann Ghia, offering more interior and cargo room. This venture into a more upmarket realm with a low volume production car was not a success, and production ceased in 1969 after about 42,000 units were built. Today, the Type 34 is considered a semi-rare collectible. The assembly line which assembled the Type 34 also produced the Porsche 914 - the Type 34’s replacement. The Karmann Ghia Touring Coupe was developed to replace the Type 1 based Karmann Ghia in Brazil. It was built from 1970 to 1976 and given the Type 145 designation. It was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro at the Italdesign studios in Turin, Italy. The TC was based on the Brazilian Type 3, as such, it has the Type 3’s drivetrain and running gear. The Volkswagen Karmann Ghia was truly a special car.

Car Parking at the RACV Club A temporary arrangement has been negotiated with the Club, which will mean your car parking will cost $5.00. Park in the car park as normal taking your ticket on entry. Bring your ticket to confirm parking and the Club will issue you with a discount voucher. When you present your original docket into the pay machine it will show parking fee of $10 is required. Then insert the discount voucher into the machine, which will then show a fee of $5.00 is required. Pay the $5.00 as normal. Discount vouchers can only be used once on the night of the meeting.

Day of the Volkswagen 2006 VW TRIVIALITIES Do Beetles float? On March the 4th, 1963 more than 1000 people lined the banks of the Murry River near the Mildura Wharf to witness Peter Jungfer put the floating Beetle myth to rest. The Volkswagen Sedan fitted with a propeller driven off the crankshaft, exhaust snorkels and a carburettor breathing tube, drove down the river bank, nose first into the water and chugged off across the Murry River towards NSW manoeuvering the VW with the front wheel as a rudder. The successful accomplishment was recorded in history by The Sunraysia Daily and Burr Bros. Motors were the local dealers for Volkswagen at the time. During the river cruise water did not affect the Beetles engine performance and there was only about half an inch of water on the floor inside.

What a Day! This years Day of the Volkswagen was the biggest on record! Our new venue at Cranbourne Racecourse proved to be a big success. The new venue offered us ample parking for all VW’s inside the ground. Most people arrived early this year and judging for the show commenced at 11.15am which is a new record for this club having the judging completed and ready for the trophy presentation at 2.30pm.

taking advantage of the option for the fast pre paid entry into the grounds. David Wawrowski did an excellent job of organising and sending the entry stickers to the participants well before the day. This saved the participants a lot of time waiting at the entry gate and saved us considerable time in This year attendance was an all preparing the judging sheets for the time record with 195 cars entered judges. Some areas were close to running out of room but Paul and his team managed to squeeze everyone in. There were 25 categories in this years show and the two new categories rat look looks and Kombi camper had 12 and 13 cars in each respectively. Thanks to Mark Krapp who organised and judged the rat look class and next year will be organising a bigger and better display for the rat fanatics.

We were fortunate this year to have a new dynamic major sponsor South Yarra VW. Francis Mohammed and the dealership team from south Yarra VW demonstrated many of the new line of VWs including Golfs, Jetta and a new Beetle. The display of new cars was spectacular and we are looking forward to visiting the South Yarra Show rooms in the next year to preview the upcoming new VWs. As the major sponsor, Francis also presented the Car of the Show trophy to a worthy winner in Nick Stelliatos for his silver modified Karmann Ghia. Shannons Insurance was able represented by Mark and Don, who assisted many of the participants of the show with their insurance enquiries. We are grateful again for the assistance from Shannons by way of the sponsorship of our advertising, the show bags which contained all those goodies and were a hot item at the front gate. Our show bags also contained samples of Flash Lube’s new product the fuel injector cleaner. Those owners of air cooled VW’s would be familiar with the Flash Lube valve saver and would appreciate that the flashlube products are designed for and suited for our older vehicles.

The VWCV would like to thank our major sponsors for supporting the 2006 Day of the Volkswagen.

The injector cleaner is new product which replaces the sulphur now removed from petrol with an additive that dose not impact on the environment. This additive is suited for the later fuel injected cars and will assist in cleaning the fuel system. We are very grateful for the donation of injector cleaner samples by Flash Lube for inclusion into the show bags. A big thanks also to the RACV for donating the first and second prizes in the raffle. RACV is also one of our valued sponsors and I am sure that the raffle winners will enjoy their stays at both 501 Bourke Street and Healesville resort. Kennett River 2007 Friday March 2 to Sunday March 4, 2007

The traditional weekend camp-out at Kennett River is definitely happening again in 2007. Kennett River is located along the picturesque Great Ocean Road between the townships of Lorne and Apollo Bay. The VW Club will once again utilise the fantastic facilities of the Kennett River Caravan Park, which is conveniently situated directly across the road from the excellent surf beach.

To take advantage of the wonderful surrounds and relaxed atmosphere, have a day off or come down immediately after work on Friday, March 2.

The weekend is intended to be rather casual and you can really do as you please - whether it be going to the beach, fishing, bush walking or general socialising with other VW enthusiasts. Everyone is to self cater which will reduce the overall catering burden off particular individuals, thus creating fairness and a chance for everyone to enjoy the weekend.

12 Volkswagen Club of Victoria Inc.

The Club will supply a barbeque for those who wish to cook. Fresh supplies can certainly be replenished by taking a short scenic drive to Apollo Bay. There is a diverse array of shops, a market and many other activities to pursue in and around Apollo Bay, so remember to pack some extra money! The Club has reserved a number of powered and unpowered camping sites at the Kennett River Caravan Park for both Friday and Saturday night. Unfortunately, at this stage there are no self-contained cabins available unless there is a cancellation.

You will need to confirm your site A.S.A.P by telephoning the Caravan Park direct on 1300 664 417. When booking, mention the VW Club and request a late check-out of 1pm Sunday at no extra charge. Accommodation costs as at December 2006 are as follows: Powered Sites $27 per site per night (2 people) Unpowered Sites $22 per site per night (2 people) Extra $10 per person to a maximum of 4 adults or 1 family per site per night

A cruise to Kennett River will leave the Shell service station, Point Cook Road at 9am on Saturday. Further details to follow in the next Wagensville. Book as soon as you can to avoid disappointment because the area is guaranteed to be busy especially in March. For more information visit www.kennettriver.com or telephone Kingsley on 03 94848953.

Australia Day 2007 Long Weekend Camp January 26, 27 and 28 The club is looking at options of holding a casual camp-out weekend but at the time of going to press we have not been able to find a suitable venue that will accommodate the numbers of people that we may get with a club group booking. If the weekend trip cannot be arranged we will certainly hold a day cruise on Sunday 28 January 2007. Details should be finalised by the 12 December 2006 club meeting.
