On behalf of the membership I would like to pass on a huge thanks and congratulations to the 2009 Day of the VW organising committee for a fantastically well run day. Planning has already started on Day of the VW 2010. And as we are entering the second decade of the new millennium we are keen to make our main event even bigger and better next year. Any feedback on the 2009 DOTVW is both sought and appreciated. I would also like to take the opportunity to thank all of our Day of the VW 2009 sponsors, Volkswagen Group Australia,

Shannons, Volkswagen Magazine Australia and Volkwerke. Thanks also to our many Supporters, Volunteers and Trophy Sponsors that contributed to the success of the day. A full colour DOTVW report will be in the February Wagensville Deluxe. We have a couple of new committee members that I would like to welcome this month. Lyn Davis has picked up the challenge and signed on as our new club secretary and Bill Malkoutzis has taken on the role of Motor Sports Coordinator. Two very welcome additions to the committee and we look forward to working with Lyn and Bill over the coming months. While we are on the subject of motorsports, early in 2010 we have the VW only drag racing event at the Southcoast Raceway in Portland on Feb 19th to 21st. This year VWMA and Southcoast Raceway have included some additional competition on the Friday night and Saturday afternoon, incorporating a regular Southcoast Raceway Friday night street meet and

open general race event that VW’s can participate in. There is onsite camping available for racers and support crews. Non drag racing activities include dune buggy action on the Swan Lake sand dunes, a car show in the Portland CBD and Tappet cover racing on the Saturday night. It’s well worth coming along to race or as a spectator as there will be plenty to do over the 3 days. Full details are listed in this month’s magazine or check out the club web site or VWMA web site for more details. Please be aware that there is no general meeting in January. The next general meeting will be at the Bell’s Hotel in South Melbourne on the 23rd of February. Ideal time to bring along all those VW Models you got from Santa for Model Car Show. Finally on behalf of the club committee, I would like to wish you and your families a very Merry Christmas and a safe a peaceful new year. See you at Portland.

Well it’s all over again for another year. Yes I am talking about the Day of the Volkswagen 2009. What an absolute ripper of a day it was too. Perfect weather, the Turf Club grounds were in perfect condition and the VeeWee’s of all types on display looked so colourful. The wetlands (watercoolers area) was packed to capacity, Rat Hill was packed to capacity and the Kombi Cavalcade was a sight to behold. We also had a nice line up of Audis, some new VW vehicles to play with and a sprinkling of Porsche’s just for a little added variety.

The kid’s activities kept the little ones and not so little ones entertained while Mum and Dad checked out the VW’s, spent money at the swap or trader stands or just relaxed and soaked up the surroundings. Fletch from Classic Resto’s was kept very busy talking to VW enthusiasts all day and finding out about all things VW. I think the diversity of the VW’s on display really impressed both Fletch and Brett his very busy camera man.

Experience the picturesque Great Ocean Road and the Surf Coast to Kennett River with the Volkswagen Club of Victoria this February.

That evening saw the VWCV Colonial Community Cook-up and optional colonial dress-up. There were some incredible dishes including kangaroo steaks, 1870’s style fried rice, damper, rabbit stew and cold squatters chicken salad.

On Tuesday, and looking at a 400 km journey home, we reluctantly packed up and left fairly early at 8.30am. We came home along the Murray River via Echuca, Rochester, and Elmore and stopped for lunch at Heathcote with 75,341 other people who were heading home along the same highway. It had been a terrific 4 days of heat, fun, heat, sightseeing, heat and heaps of VW related enjoyment, in the heat. Thanks to all who attended and contributed. Saturday morning on the Geelong waterfront presented a perfect venue for the event. 40 odd VW’s gathered, lots of Splitty’s, Beetles and a few watercooled’s. The display ran until 12 followed by a paraded through the main street of Geelong and out to gather again at Waurn Ponds. Shortly after we headed off towards Deans Marsh for lunch at the very interesting Martians Cafe, where we were well looked after. From there it was on down the picturesque winding road into Lorne, where we stopped to take in the magnificent view. A parade through Lorne followed to a seaside car park near the jetty for a nice photo shoot, then it was back up the Great Ocean Road to Torquay. At Torquay we booked in to the Foreshore Caravan Park. With the onshore breeze quite cool, we shortly adjourned to the pub for dinner. The usual hilarity followed at the pub, and back at the cabins afterwards, but most people eventually got some sleep.

Many thanks to Doc for a well organised event, which I hope will continue in the Club calender for years to come. Brian Reed

VW PRE-DRIVER ENTRY ESSENTIAL ENTRIES CLOSE FEBRUARY 12th 2010

Sunday morning saw us at the same foreshore cafe that we used on the Barwon Heads tour for an excellent breakfast. Then followed a convoy through Barwon Heads, Ocean Grove, Portarlington, and ending at the Queenscliff market, where there was space for group parking, and more photos. After an hour or so and a little light lunch at the market, it was off to the final stop at Leopold’s Mill Market, which kept the antique hunters happy, and also had a good coffee shop. And finally, from here people dispersed and made their way home.
