President’s Report Dean Holden, VWCV President Hi all and welcome to the bumper Day of the Volkswagen edition of the Wagensville Deluxe. The main topic of discussion for the Day of the Volkswagen organising committee has been our big day and they have all been busy over the past 3 months to ensure that our clubs big day is well on track to be success in 2009. If you haven’t done so already, please make sure you pre-register for the Show and Shine. You can do it on line, through our club website and pay with PayPal. Great benefits of pre-registration include a free and very stylish Day of the Volkswagen 09 T-Shirt in a classic 70’s shade of orange and a show bag that’s almost worth the $20.00 cost of the Show and Shine registration by itself. It only takes 5 mins to pre register. We have a lot going on at this years DOTVW. Fletch from the Classic Resto’s show on Channel 31 will be on site with a camera man shooting the event. So don’t be surprised if he pushes a camera in your face and wants to hear all about your Volkswagen. Remember standard of presentation is important if you want to get your VW on TV. Theme displays are always a good way to get your Volkswagen noticed. The kids will also be well entertained with non stop kids rides running during the day. We will also have VW plaster mould painting and the slot car challenge for kids both young and old to keep us all well occupied. Our Day of the VW 2009 sponsors Volkswagen Group Australia, Shannons and Volkswagen Magazine Australia will also be on hand with product displays, merchandise and product information for your perusal.
splittycalendar.com RRP Australia: $19.95, Asia Pacific: AUD $22.95, Worldwide: AUD $24.95 Prices INCLUDE delivery
We have included a Day of the Volkswagen lift out with all the details of the day listed for your information. You will notice we have made some changes to the way we are judging the show and shine entrants. This means the judging will get finished earlier and the trophy presentations will run better. The 2009 DOTVW Show and Shine trophies are a work of art and will look fantastic on the mantel of any Vee Dubbers pool room. So get on line and get registered. As reported last month I joined a small contingent of Club Members who headed North for the VW only drag racing at Warwick in Qld. The results for our team of Mexicans called the “Loco Gringos” was mixed with one smashed gear box being the low point but the real high point was our very own Michael Clark winning his class and bringing home the silverware. Congratulations to Michael for a great win. Full report on Warwick included in this magazine. Remember that we won’t be having a Tuesday nite general meeting in December. We will be having a club Christmas get together at Lloyd Davis place in Eltham on Sunday the 13th of December. We will enjoy some nice food and drink and have a bit of fun on the day with a few VW based activities. I’m sure we will find a few nice prizes to throw around too. Full details are provided in the calendar of events section. At the time of writing this month’s president’s report, our club committee is still with out a Club Secretary and Motor Sports Coordinator. Great Clubs run on volunteers and this ensures that we maintain a high standards of presentation and events that we all enjoy. If you are interested in finding out more about these committee positions or have been considering becoming more involved in the running of the best VW club in Australia (yes I am very biased) please contact me. See you all at the Day of the volkswagen on Sunday 15th November.
During the lead up time to print of the November Wagensville Deluxe the new car jungle drums were beating very loudly about the imminent release of the exciting new Golf Mk6 GTI. Details are being very closely guarded by VWGA, but on the basis of information available on international web sites we believe that power is up, economy improved, emissions down and the 0 to 100 kph time just down a touch under 6 seconds. The best sort of launch metrics any car manufacturer could wish for. We also believe that the engine is all new compared to the current GTI, also safety is improved with bigger brakes and 2 stage ESP. And that’s about all we know at this stage. But on the basis the little we do know, its definitely going to be worth the wait when the new Mk 6 GTI breaks cover early in November. One other thing we do know is that there will be a new Mk 6 GTI on display at the Day of the Volkswagen, so get along there and check it out in the metal. For those who cant wait that long, check out the following web site - www.golfgti.com.au/ and sign on to the Volkswagen GTI Advanced Driving Academy. You may find yourself behind the wheel of one of these beauties at a track day in Melbourne. Me first. Dean Holden

Volunteers
The Day of the Volkswagen 2009 Judging Arrangements.
We also need volunteers to run the day. This means giving an hour or so of your time to direct traffic, marshal cars, judge cars, serve on the Club stand, help with the plaster mould painting, colouring in or scalextric racing. Volunteering your time helps the Club and the event to run smoothly. This year each Volunteer will receive a limited edition Day of the Volkswagen 09 Volunteer’s Polo-shirt and Pin for their contribution.
To avoid long lines of vehicles at the front entrance, this years judging process has changed to help the flow of traffic. All cars will be judged before they are parked. Once you enter the front gate and your car is to be judged, you will be directed to the pre-judging car detailing area, located in the outside car park.
If you don’t need to detail your car please feel free to join the judging lane straight after entering the gate.
Day of the Volkswagen 2009 Programme for the day This year is looking to be another big year for the Day of the Volkswagen with Volkswagen Group Australia our major sponsor for the event. On display will be many of the new range of Volkswagen vehicles. Representatives from Volkswagen Group Australia will be on hand to demonstrate and answer any questions you may have about the new cars on display.
60 Years of the Transporter Cavalcade The DOTVW theme this year is celebrating 60 years of the Volkswagen Kombi with a cavalcade of Kombis showcasing each year of manufacture. Vehicles will be selected to best represent the range of features and body configurations available across the various production eras. Nominations are open to vehicles in all states of repair including original, restored, modified, works in progress or “as found” condition. The choice of the vehicles for the display will be at the discretion of the VWCV Day of the Volkswagen committee. Nominees must be current financial members of the Volkswagen Club of Victoria to be eligible and members may nominate more than one vehicle. All selected entrants will receive a specially minted 60th Anniversary of the Kombi car badge. Vehicles to be judged for DOTVW show categories are also eligible to enter for this display. Owners must make additional arrangements for their show and shine entry. For further information or full event details please contact Andrew Ermel T 9369 1360
Classic Restos The special event for this year will be Classic Restos featuring the Day of the Volkswagen on their TV show. Mark Fletcher (Fletch) created Classic Restos to provide an opportunity for people who have experienced the restoration process to share their story and showcase the results of their hard work. Fletch will be at the Day of the Volkswagen, filming an episode of Classic Restos. Everyone will have the opportunity to offer their cars to be reviewed during the show. Your car doesn’t have to be fully restored in original condition, Modified and the much loved Rat look vehicles are just as interesting as they represent the diversity of the Volkswagen scene.
Judging will be available from 8.30am to 9.00am for Volunteers who are working on the day but want to enter their car for judging. Public Show and Shine judging from 9.00am to 11.00am. Once your car has been judged you are free to park your car inside the grounds if your model is nominated for inside parking, otherwise please use the outside car park next to the detailing area or across the driveway from the judging lanes. A parking volunteer will be at the end of the judging lanes to assist with directions if needed. This year it is not necessary to park cars in model groups. Please feel free to park with your friends. This year, the Day of the Volkswagen the judging arrangements for the Standard classes will again be organised by club members John Goodison and Lloyd Davies. It will continue the tradition of a ‘Show and Shine’ event established over many years. John and Lloyd will try to ensure that the judging will be fair for all who enter. Good luck to all.

The 60th Anniversary of the Kombi The Evolution of Volkswagen Transporters
Splitscreen Models 1949 – First Transporter introduced to the public in November 1949. It featured unitary construction with its large box like body welded together on a sub frame that carried the drive train and suspension. Mechanically it shared much from the Beetle including an air-cooled 25HP engine and 4 speed gearbox also driving the rear wheels through swing axles with independent torsion bar front suspension. To provide lower overall gearing and higher ground clearance a set of reduction drives similar to those used on the Kubelwagen were fitted at each rear wheel to allow for the greater load carrying capacity of the transporter. Four wheel hydraulic drum brakes were used on 16 inch rims. It had a rounded front for greater aerodynamic efficiency with head lights and panel swaging provide an appearance that was suggestive of the Beetle. The
simple two piece windscreen arrangement with a vertical bar down the middle would give rise to the name “Split screen” that is used for these early generation buses. The proposed model range included a panel van, Microbus, Kombi and pick up with special ambulance and Post office vehicles planned for later release.
1950 – Just over 8000 transporters were produced in the first full year of production. Around 70% of these were panel vans and the remainder Kombis and Microbuses. They had (for their day) exceptional cargo space at well over four and a half cubic metres and carrying capacity that was equal to their own weight of 850Kg. Access to the load area was via two large side doors and this area was separated from the drivers cab by a steel bulkhead. A smaller compartment area above the engine behind the rear seats (if fitted) provided further storage. The spare wheel was mounted in a shelf above the engine bay which was accessed via a large hinged door but there was no access to the interior from the rear on these models. This door arrangement led to the name “barn door” by which these early split screen transporters are light and sliding two- piece side glass), three side commonly known. windows and one tailgate window being an “11 window” model). A rear window became standard 1951 – The Deluxe microbus (commonly referred on all models. An ambulance model with special to as the Samba) with full length Golde folding roof and skylight windows was introduced. It had equipment was introduced, as was a camping box option that would further enhance the vehicles a better level of interior trim and featured chrome already broad range of uses. trim and a full length dashboard instead of the

The export of transporters to other European countries increased dramatically.
pod type dash of the basic models. The additional 1952 – The pickup model was finally added to roof and side windows of the Samba model which the range. It had a large flat bed with folding included curved glass windows in the rear corners steel gates. An optional canvas top supported gave rise to the name “23 window bus”. (The by steel bows was available. The engine bay standard kombi model with its split windscreens, door windows (which included a pivoting quarter
1953 – The first right hand drive transporters were made available and export to the UK began. Four transporters were sent to Australia (rising to over 700 in the following year). Engines were upgraded to 30HP in line with the Beetle and a synchromesh gearbox was provided. Walk through front seat became available in lieu of the standard full length bench seat as a customer option. Pick up tailgates now contained surface pressings to add strength. (They originally had “smooth” sheet metal skins). 1954 – In line with Volkswagen philosophy continual minor mechanical and cosmetic upgrades were being made in many areas for greater serviceability and performance. The optional Behr air scoop available for all models now fitted as standard on ambulances hinting at cabin ventilation as a deficiency on the barn door models. The 100,000th “bus” was produced in October 1954. The quirky backwards rotating speedo was changed to a more conventional unit that was now calibrated all the way to 100kmh up from 80kmh necessary in light of the increased engine power (now at 36HP).

became standard. The front ribbed bumper gained a wider licence plate area. An extra louvre (9 in total) was added to improve engine cooling air intake on the side of the van models.
button with a finger recess incorporated into the frame underneath. A strengthening lip was added to the rear wheel arch and the engine louvres now faced inward (and were 10 in number).
1957 - Minor changes mechanical continued. Self cancelling indicators were added in late in the production year. Hubcaps on panelvans and pickups became chromed items as standard on all models.
1964 - Hand pump windscreen washers added. Lever operates warm air control between window vents and foot vents in cab.
1958 – A double cab pickup model became a factory standard model replacing the M16 optional body. Cargo doors gained a recess under the doors handles to provide extra hand clearance and strength. Tail lights were moved lower and closer to the side of the body on all models following the changes made on pickups early in the production year and a combined tail and brake light replaced separate units including the single central brake light of previous models. Ribbed bumpers were replaced with smooth units (also featuring no visible mounting bolts) and these were normally painted white unlike the ribbed items which were often highlighted with the body colour.
1955 – The first major body changes were introduced to the transporter range. Most notably the overhanging peaked roof with fresh air intakes above the windscreens appeared. Inside a central overhead box arrangement now ducted this fresh air into the cab. The fitting of an upward opening tailgate hinged at the top just under the roof made accessing the rear cargo area much simpler and a separate engine lid was added. To accommodate this new separate tailgate and engine lid arrangement, the spare wheel was moved into the cab and was mounted in a well pressed into the bulkhead behind the front bench seat. The “T” shaped handle with its integral key lock was kept for the tailgate and a less secure “church key” lock was provided on the engine lid. The same church key with its tapered square end also now opened the fuel filler flap on the side of the body eliminating the need to open the engine lid in order to refuel. Cargo doors gained an integral key (previously the lock was under a small swinging cover and the recesses under cab’s pull-out door handles were enlarged. Wheel size was reduced from 16 inches down to 15 inches. Braking was upgraded to include twin

wheel cylinders in the front and the front steering and axle beam were significantly upgraded eliminating several key weaknesses in handling and durability of the early model. Telescopic shock absorbers were fitted all round (replacing the lever type units that were previously fitted on the rear). Inside a completely new full length dashboard became standard and a more “stylish” two spoke steering wheel replaced the original “skinny” three spoke item. A full length shelf was also fitted below the dashboard provided additional storage for personal items. Microbus models had a small rectangular clock fitted to the passenger side of the dash and a radio (where fitted) was centrally mounted. Otherwise a pressed metal plate covered this radio opening on all models which allowed the easy fitting of a radio as an option. 1956 – Transporter manufacture was shifted exclusively to the new Hannover plant and Wolfsburg bus production ceased. The engine/ gearbox carrier changed to a pressed steel unit replacing the “bent tube” arrangement carried over from the Barndoor models. A second rear view mirror mounted on the passenger door hinge
1959 – The engine hand crank feature was dropped which including deletion of the lugged pulley bolt on engine, the crank handle opening on engine valance panel and the crank handle itself from the tool kit. Centrifugal advance mechanism on the distributor replaced by vacuum only set up. The pressed steel tube holding the ignition leads was dropped in favour of rubber fittings and a separate generator stand was provided on the engine. Reinforcing was added to the front axle beam. 1960 – 40HP engine provided. Rear bumpers became the same on all models (previously a different shape on pickup models). Plastic
1965 - Payload increased to 1 tonne. Larger heat exchangers and engine temperature control upgraded with “throttle” ring on cooling fan replaced by thermostat activated flaps in tinware ducts. Interior rear view mirror made larger. 1966 – Previous “slash” bumpers were given more rounded symmetrical ends (instead of angled ones). Australian buses adopted a double row of engine air vents above the swage line (unlike imported buses that kept the previous arrangement. 1967 – 12 volt electric were added. Church key fuel lock eliminated and “one key” locking interior door handles replaced chromed ones on be relatively short-lived when a “facelift” was made on doors and ignition introduced. Larger radio “standard” models. The recess for the pull-out cab to all door hardware on the 1963 model and the housing provided. Rear track widened from door handles was made larger. The somewhat “T” handle would be eliminated altogether). Cargo 1300mm to 1350mm and dual circuit braking antiquated and complex semaphore indicators doors top hinges were lowered to a position just introduced. Last Splitscreen rolls of Hannover mounted in the pillars behind the cab doors were above the body swage line (level with the bottom production line in July. New “Bay window” model finally replaced by fixed front bullet and separate of the windows where fitted). Plastic interior flexi from 1st August 1967. Around 55,000 split round rear types. Australian transporter production grab handles replaced metal ones. Rear taillights screen transporters were built in Australia out of a commenced following local CKD assembly of and indicators change to a combined unit (which total of over 1.8 million worldwide. imported buses from 1955. was much larger and slightly oval shaped). 1961 - A fuel gauge was added and the reserve “tank” arrangement and its related operating lever in the cab were dropped. A crescent shaped recess was added under the tailgate handle (but it would
1962 - Larger 200mm clutch. Later production saw full length front bench seat replaced with separate (and adjustable) driver and passengers seats. Headlight buckets (visible from inside cab) were flatter. A “Volkswagen” name badge was mounted above the engine lid. 1,000,000 transporters produced in September 1962. 1963 - Engine capacity increased from a nominal 1200cc to 1500cc. Wheel size dropped to 14 inches (although Australian built models kept 15 inch rims for some time after). Cloth headling replaced by vinyl in microbus models. Bullet style indicators replaced by larger and flatter front “fish eye” style ones. Sliding door option made available. Rear corner windows on the Samba model were dropped making the subsequent Microbus deluxes “21 window” models. Push button locks replaced the pull-out style cab door handles and the cargo door handles were made “squarer” and heavier. The “T” handle on the tailgate was replaced by a push

Bay Window Models 1967 - In August 1967 the substantially revised “Bay Window” transporter was released. Following the trend of releasing the new “model year” late in the year before the “1968” transporter featured a larger slightly squarer body with a full sized curved glass windscreen. A single sliding door replaced the two hinged cargo doors and bucket front seats were mounted on individual turrets. The basic mechanical layout of the Splitscreen was maintained but a single port 1600cc engine and double jointed rear suspension replaced the earlier 1500cc engine and the swing axles with their reduction boxes were gone. Dual circuit brakes improved handling and an upgraded dashboard, improved switchgear and controls and more extensive vinyl trim made them a far more refined and comfortable vehicle to drive. The engine air intake louvers of the Splitscreen were replaced with a more purposeful scoop mounted high on the rear quarters. Three much larger side windows (with opening quarter lights in the middle) ran the full length of the body replacing the previous small rectangular side fixed and “pop-out” windows. The slightly flatter front nose had two round
1972 – Larger 1700cc engine option available for all models except pick-up due to restrictions on engine bay height. Engine cooling louvers enlarged and tinware modified to again improve cooling. Larger rear taillight units adopted (Longer and squarer than previous oval style) and fuel filler shifted further back to avoid overlap from sliding door. Engine fitted with electronic diagnostic 1968 - Largely unchanged after initial release. system “plug” allowing remote diagnostics using 1969 - Trigger release door handles replaced push special VW dealer service equipment. Larger rear button type. brake cylinders. headlights with large rectangular surface mounted indicators below. VW Warwick 09 The weekend of October 3rd and 4th saw the running of this years VW Warwick at the 8th mile drag strip just out of Warwick Queensland. The weekend consists of not only 2 days of exciting Volkswagen racing, Show n Shine, Swap Meet and a great chance to hang with some serious V Dubbers. On the Wednesday before, a group of 6 dedicated a convoy into Warwick central to display our cars to the locals. We do this to promote the event Victorians headed out of a cold and wet and get more bums on seats for the Saturday and Melbourne at first light, to make the long journey Sunday racing. By lunch time we were all back at up to sunny Queensland. Andrew Ermel, Dean the track and after scrutiny and a drivers briefing Holden, Michael Cronin, Steve Craven, Stuart it was time to race. Saturday racing consists of Ermel and myself piled into two T4 transporters free practice then qualifying, this is where you towing 2 drag Beetles. After 2 fairly uneventful work out your dial in time for the Sunday days driving we arrived in Warwick at about 6pm and after a couple of phone calls we were allowed shootout and finals. to set up camp at the track. It had been a long The Vollkommen Art boys, Nick, George, John, hard drive that day and we were all pretty tired but and Mark turned up with Nicks turbo/methanol it’s amazing what a few Pizzas and a lot of Beers powered Beetle and Marks turbo street Beetle, can do to make you forget the highway. but on the Saturday ,Nicks Beetle after probably the weekends biggest burnout developed a Because we were the first to get to the track we serious oil leak and did not get back on the track were able to pick a great spot in the pits, right in until Sunday afternoon. Mark didn’t fair much the middle of the action. better on Saturday after just one run his engine Saturday morning, after a bit of breakie and lots lost all oil pressure. of coffee saw us ready to join the other racers for
Both Andrew and I struggled in our first couple of runs, my line locker switch fell apart in my hands on the first time out and then I missed 2nd gear. Andrew, after a very cool burnout tried to take off down the strip in 3rd gear, not the start we had planned but things would get better. By the end of the day both Andrew and I had bettered our 1/8th mile times from Portland, which was cool as everyone had told us we would be slower due to the fact that Warwick is of a higher altitude than Portland. Andrew in particular was having a ball on Saturday doing some seriously wicked burnouts which pleased us and the crowd. On Saturday night the local members of the Warwick Drag Racing Club put on a great feed for all the racers and crew members in the main tent. After dinner we settled in for a few drinks and a bit of rocker cover racing. It’s quite amusing to see grown men literally playing for sheep stations while the little kids just wanted to have fun, I was with the kids, having fun. Sunday, and the locals again came good with a hearty breakfast for the VW faithful, eggs, bacon and a beautiful Queensland morning, what better way to start the day.
Competition started with a 1/2 hour practice, mostly for those who had experienced problems the day before. Andrew and I decided to use this time to blow the cob webs out before the finals, as I had been having crank case breathing problems on Saturday I needed to see if our repairs had worked (a piece of rag wrapped around the breather filter to stop the oil from dripping out, very high tech). This was the first time for the weekend that Andy and I had lined up together, unfortunately after another one of his signature burnouts Andrew broke the diff when we both took off. I only noticed this when after getting to the end of the strip, Andrew wasn’t there. Nick came out to run in the finals but after yet another monster burnout he did a massive wheel stand and broke a steering arm when the car hit the ground, exit Nick. Mark was able to sort out his oil pressure problems and run in the finals but due to a lack of track time he lost I think two of his three races and was knocked out. With Andrew and the Vollkommen boys out, it was up to me to represent Victoria. The finals consisted of a round robin style shootout of three
rounds where basically the last man standing wins. There were 84 entrants to start with on Saturday and after a bit of attrition the quickest eight cars compete amongst themselves, (these are the Pro cars) the non VW powered guys and the VW powered trikes to race against themselves, leaving all the rest (air cooled class) to fight it out. So after three rounds I had won all my races and picked up a trophy for my troubles to bring home. After the presentations we packed up, said our goodbyes and hit the road for the long drive home. It’s a big commitment to tow a car over 3000km there and back to race but it was all worth it as we had a great time. We intend going back again next year, hopefully some more Victorians will join us next time. I would like to thank Craig Hughes of Volkswagen Australia Magazine, Custom Bugs and Buses and all the other sponsors and helpers for probably the best motorsport event I have ever been a part of. I would like to thank in particular the Loco Gringos VW Drag Race Team. See you all at Portland in February. Adios Amigos, Michael Clark.

From the Archives The Volkswagen Commercials Unique to the Australia range of the Transporter production during the 1960’s was the Volkswagen 1500cc Container Van. Built on a unitized construction platform of the panel van it was unlike the European VW special bodied vans which were constructed on a modified Pick-up platform.
Petrol and Pancakes Ballarat 09 Saturday 17th October saw the 3rd Annual Petrol and Pancakes hosted by Peter and Marg Bruty. The event was well attended by the Ballarat and Bendigo Volkswagen/Porsche clubs and the VWCV were there to sample the amazing Bruty Pancakes. As always you can count on Ballarat for cold weather but this didn’t kill the appetite. Type 1, Type 2 and Type 3 Pancakes were being pumped out on our arrival. In total over 150 people cued for pancakes, 65 Volkswagens parked and over 300 Pancakes were made on the day. You know when you have had a good turnout when you go through 10kg of Pancake mix, 30ltr Milk, 20ltr Ice-cream and 3ltr Maple Syrup.
The Australian built container Van was made with a steel construction and had a payload capacity of 240 cubic feet and when compared to the panel vans 170 cubic feet was a substantial increase in payload volume.
News travels fast? The morning went off so well Peter received a phone call from Sydney wondering if he and his catering crew could fly up and cater for an event. I think it may have been Volkswagen related too?
The large side panels were pressed by Ansair Melbourne and assembled at Volkswagen special bodies department within the Clayton Victoria plant. With the exception of the four rows of timber slating fitted along the inside of the side panels the body was of an all steel construction and was far superior to that of other delivery vehicles available during those years. The container van featured double opening doors at the rear and had an integral body which was fully welded to the cab section forming a completely weather proof rear area. The side doors utilized the locks from the panel van and provided the van with an overall internal floor to ceiling height of 72’’ or 1.8 meters. These vans were ordered by many taxi truck companies as courier vehicles and the most memorable use was by the Melbourne Company of Brown Gouge as dry cleaning delivery vehicles.
The Volkswagen Club of Victoria would like to thank Peter and Marg for opening their home for the event and for putting on such a great morning.
Although only modest numbers were manufactured here in Australia they are a very unique vehicle and are highly sort after by Kombi collectors all over the world.
We will certainly be back for Pancakes next year.

I think most had seconds they were so good and rumor has it that some went back for their 4th helpings. The morning kicked of with the usual Volkswagen chat, coffee and a chance to look at some great Volkswagen and Porsche vehicles. This was then followed by the engine re building competition for those who think they know how the heart of a Volkswagen ticks. I don’t think the 1 minute 8 seconds record was broken but a few fast times were recorded. Not sure how well the engine would run? but good fun was had by all.
