Paul’s Ramblings > Paul Kinsey - VWCV Club President Welcome to the October edition of the Wagensville News. Well it only seems like yesterday that I wrote my first article in the Wagensville News in the capacity of President of our Club, but that was twelve months ago. I am very honoured to be appointed as President for a second term and I thank all members for your support. I also welcome all the new appointees to the committee for the next year. I know that the committee will welcome all new ideas and suggestions. We always must continue to look for improvements which can be made in the running of our club. I cannot remember an AGM that had such a good attendance as the September meeting last month. At that meeting we “kicked off” a new initiative of the “members corner”. This idea is to introduce one of our club members and to get them to give an overview of their history in VW and how their interest in the marque started. We were fortunate to have John Goodison as the first presenter and we thank John very much for his excellent presentation with his family history in VW very well supported with great family photos. Also I would like to thank Bill Malkoutzis for his help in running the formal part of the AGM. One of our two main fundraisers for the year took place on Sunday 2nd October at the Bacchus Marsh Secondary College - the third annual “National VW Swap Meet”. The event, which is the brainchild of club member Eric Roberts, again was a tremendous success with some 57 swap sites present on the day and over 460 people coming through the gates. The event was a financial success with profit improving on last year’s success.

The most pleasing aspect on the day was the number of new helpers who offered their help. This made the work to be done so much easier to manage and gave us all time to check out the swap sites and buy up big. Thanks to all those members who assisted on the day. Our next “Tech Day” is on Saturday 22nd of October at the home/garage of club member and VAS Engineer Bill Malkoutzis, at which he will explain the requirements for the certification of modified vehicles to Australian Design Rules (ADRs). The other big event at the end of the month is the 4 day cruise around Victoria commencing on Saturday 29th and finishing on Tuesday 1st November. Good luck to all those taking part in the trip and please drive safely. I’ll see you all at the next General Meeting on Tuesday 18th October in the Henty Room at the RACV Club. •

New Golf Cabrio Breaks Cover > From ‘drive.com.au’ - 8/2005 The Volkswagen Golf is the latest drop-top to join the folding-metal-roof craze. The new model was previewed in concept-car form at last year's Geneva motor show but the real thing will emerge before the public unveiling at the Frankfurt motor show next month. Known simply as the Cabrio, it has long been part of the Golf line-up and the most recent in the series was built from 1993 to 1999 on the previous, fourth-generation Golf platform. Its place was taken by the New Beetle cabriolet in 2002, but Volkswagen has realised there is still an opening for a convertible version of the Golf. It tested the water with a design study called the VW Concept C, pictured above, which was unveiled at the Geneva show in March last year. Two months later Volkswagen gave the green light for a production version of the Concept C, and as was the case with the concept, the new model will be a folding hard-top coupeconvertible in much the manner of the successful Peugeot 307CC and, of course, the Mercedes-Benz SLK, which pioneered the concept. By comparing the first spy-photo images from agency Automedia against the original Concept C, it appears that the production Cabrio will not inherit the same aggressive styling, although Volkswagen has hinted that the integrated-glass sliding sunroof within the
folding-metal-roof system is a strong possibility for production, giving the car a strong point of difference from other coupe-cabrios. The new drop-top is expected to go on sale in Europe in the first quarter of next year, but because Volkswagen Australia has a crowded 2006-model program, it's unlikely to introduce the Cabrio here until early in 2007. The Cabrio is expected to be a full fourseater and will be aimed at volume sales with aggressive pricing falling between the Golf and the Passat. In Australia, this would put it between $40,000 and $50,000 on today's pricing. The vehicle will be built at Volkswagen's factory in Portugal. Meanwhile, coming to Australia next year are a new Passat, the smaller Jetta (otherwise known as a Golf with a boot), and later in the year the successor to the high-performance Golf R32. Volkswagen Australia is also determined to introduce more diesel-powered vehicles, even though diesel power is yet to make economic sense here thanks to the higher cost of diesel fuel and the price premium that diesel-powered cars attract. •

The Perfect Sunday > The VWCV Yum Cha cruise by Laura...
Last year when the Chapel St Cruise was held, I didn't own a Beetle. My boyfriend asked me to come along in his 1973 Tiger Mica L-Bug, and I loved it! The look on people's faces as they watched a stream of VeeDubs drive past was priceless. I bought my first Beetle in May: a 1970 Stickshift Auto, and when I saw that the Chapel St Cruise would be held again (along with Yum Cha for lunch.... yum!) I was so looking forward to it. Alas, my Beetle couldn't make it on Sunday due to sudden mechanical problems. Talk about disappointment! Lucky for my boyfriend and I, we didn't have to miss out completely. His Dad drives a very clean 1976 Kombi Transporter, so all three of us made our way to Como Park in that for 11am. Being the first ones there, the cameras came out and we waited in the
sun by the Yarra River for more cars to arrive. Before too long a rainbow of Beetles both old and new, a Karmann Ghia and another 2 Kombis were all parked amongst the Beemers and Mercs on both sides of the road. Even Herbie was there! After meeting and greeting cars and people (and after taking many photos) we were all back in our Dubs and ready to cruise. The day couldn't have been nicer to us as we meandered our way into the city.

Beautiful blue sky, mild temperature, and the sun on Albert Park Lake looked very lovely. I wonder what all the swans thought of the immaculate Bugs driving past, especially that bright yellow Oval! As always happens though, the convoy of VWs was broken into sections by the pitfalls of traffic... I heard someone got a bit lost and ended up in St Kilda? Anyway the cars soon found their way to the Exhibition Building, and with tummies rumbling we were all parked and heading to the Dragon Boat Restaurant. It is one of Melbourne's leading Chinese Restaurants and it's not hard to see why. Most of the patrons inside were Chinese which is always a good sign! After being seated at 2 huge round tables (12-13 people per table) the feast and fun began! With giggles a-plenty at the thought of those Chicken Feet (I'm sure the flavour is enhanced by what they were standing in while alive and attached....) and the strength of the Chinese Tea, the food was actually very nice. Although 12 baskets of prawn dumplings MAY be considered excessive for the one table now I think of it... but there wasn't much food left at the end! We all had a great lunch in the company of some great people, and I hope I speak for all who were a part of this event by saying "I so can't wait for the next one!" •

Electrons in the Car > Everything you wanted to know about your car’s battery by Bernd Wachs... In of our VWCV club magazine I am going to write a couple of articles titled "Electrons in the Car.” These articles will cover different topics and will hopefully allow everyone to obtain a better understanding of car electrics. Suggestions for future topics for our magazine will be greatly appreciated. If you have any queries bring them to our car club meeting or write into our magazine. I will try to keep it as simple as possible. I own a 1985 VW Caravelle CL, which is a blue/white in colour and given me very little trouble since I first purchased it. It has just clocked over 330,000km. I also own a 1991 Syncro. One of my many interests includes electronics. I have 2 solar panels which are about 25 years old and 3 new ones, 12 205AH batteries, a home made solar battery regulator, and a 300W sinewave inverter which I use whenever there is a power blackout. I also like taking a few photos, owning a computer, NOT an IBM.
Now that the formalities are over let’s get into it... Electron's topic for this month is Batteries Batteries are very fascinating things BUT a pain when they fail... Car batteries can basically be divided into 2 types, the LO and the regular maintenance types. All batteries require maintenance, it is just a matter of what degree. Batteries are primarily designed to work in an upright condition and if titled too far from the horizontal position will decrease both it’s efficiency and life expectancy. Sealed car batteries In the NO, ultra LO maintenance batteries, there are 2 different types of construction. The most popular by far is the sealed water/acid type battery. In this battery the construction is very similar to the standard battery except that it has no venting facility for gases produced during charging. This means also that there is a reduction in the
New European Number Plates... VicRoads has recently released a new type of number plate called 'Euro Plate.’ These plates have a similar layout and dimensions to the number plates made in Europe thereby making them ideal for European cars such as the ones owned by VWCV members. These plates complete your cars European feel, especially since the plate dimensions suit the car design. To mark the release of the 'Euro Plate' a special offer has been prepared for VWCV members. This promotion provides a 10% discount for all members who order the Euro-Plates through your club. This would mean that a standard Euro Plate would cost $355.50 (normally $395) and a personalised Euro Plate would cost $625.50 (normally $695). Contact VicRoads for details... •

chances of acid spills providing the battery is not damaged in any way. It is still a good idea to use all safety precautions when handing this type of battery because of the unknown factor. The internal construction is designed to minimise gassing during the normal charging process, and any gas that is produced is recombined back again to minimise any problems. Because of this design philosophy it also does not require to be topped up with water. The second type of NO maintenance battery is the gel type. This battery does not use the water and acid combination but uses a gel substitute. These batteries are generally more expensive and not as readily available as those mentioned above. These batteries usually last longer and have better charging/ discharging characteristics than acid type batteries. They are also generally more robust than the acid style batteries and can operate at larger tilt angles than standard batteries. Semi-sealed car batteries Semi-sealed batteries contain removable caps for maintenance purposes. These caps have small holes in them to allow gas to escape which is generated during the charging process. This is the most common type of battery being installed in cars today. They require a maintenance schedule just like a normal car does.
Due to the fact that batteries contain an electrolyte which consists of water and sulphuric acid the following information is very important. Safety: It is a very good idea to have a bucket of water or a hose with control mechanism at the user end so that if an acid spill occurs you can wash the affected area down immediately. DO NOT USE ANYTHING ELSE! DO NOT USE BICARBONATE SODA on the skin or EYES to dilute the acid. If baking soda is used (the other name its known by) to neutralise any acid spills - especially in the eyes, it will cause MORE HARM than the acid itself. Use a set of rubber gloves to stop acid burns on your hands and protective goggles to protect your eyes is must. Old clothes: It is a very good idea to wear old clothes because if you spill acid on them you will find that you will have holes in them. Even if you wash them immediately you will find that the holes will still keep growing. Batteries these days generally have a life expectancy of about 2 - 4 years. This will depend upon how the battery is maintained. They should be checked every 6 months for water levels. Only add distilled water as it contains a lot less contaminents (which can reduce battery life.) •

General Meeting Mini Auctions > By Andrew Ermel Every General Meeting from now on will feature a ‘mini’ auction after the first break. Those who came to the last General Meeting had the opportunity to buy some very desirable VW bits and pieces on offer. These items included an oval Beetle steering wheel, hard to obtain books, car models and some rare memorabilia. The idea of the mini auction is to give you the opportunity to sell items to club members rather than having to advertise them. You can view the items during the break and speak to the potential sellers and buyers. Because it is an auction, it gives everyone a fair go at buying items. Also the club benefits if the item exceeds the seller’s reserve price. How does it work? If you have any bits and pieces that you want to sell, bring them along to the general meeting. The items must be small enough to be carried, reasonable condition and above all, clean. There will be a maximum of six items per mini auction. If more than six items are to be auctioned, the auction will be limited to one item per seller. You set the price you want for the item, and this becomes the reserve - and what you receive from the sale. The item is then auctioned to the members during the meeting. If the item fails to reach the reserve, it is withdrawn
from sale. If the item exceeds the reserve price, you get the reserve amount and the club get the remainder as a form of a donation. Also you may have something of value that you wish to donate to the club for auction, and the club would be most appreciative. So get those surplus items and make yourself some money. Remember the items can be of anything of interest to other club members. •

Flagging Sales Refocus VW > From ‘The Australian’ - 8/2005 VOLKSWAGEN has been in the news for all the wrong reasons lately. A boardroom scandal involving allegations of bribery has come hot on the heels of balance sheet red ink in two of the world's biggest markets and confusion over company direction. The Japanese and Koreans increasingly encroach on VW's European territory, General Motors now outsells it in China and VW has dropped the ball in the United States, with sales slipping from 389,000 in 2003 to an expected 279,000 this year. Chairman Bernd Pischetsrieder, speaking to German magazine Stern, predicts at least two more years of trouble for its US operations and extensive cuts in Europe. With its focus elsewhere - such as building the Phaeton luxury sedan - VW has missed out on the booming compact soft-roader segment and lacks something sexy to offer the urbanites who have snapped up small convertibles. Success for VW Still relies disproportionately on the Golf, with at least four variants of the latest model already on sale in Europe and more on the way. Although it took some hasty incentives, this fifth generation is busy repeating the success of its predecessors in Europe and after 12 months on sale in Australia, it has single-handedly salvaged VW fortunes. Sales dived 10 per cent in 2004 but this year they are up nearly 60 per cent, with Golf driving the increase. Although the Golf is necessary for Europe's biggest car-maker to thrive, it isn't sufficient.

Recent recruit Wolfgang Bernhard, a Merc young turk who found his career path blocked, has quickly rolled up his sleeves and there are signs that the cars VW needs to recover are on the way. With responsibility for the VW brand, Bernhard has belatedly torn up the policy of pursuing luxury makers like Mercedes and declared Toyota as the company's real rival. One key to future success is the new Golf based sedan called Jetta. The current model sells as the Bora in Australia but when Jetta deliveries begin next February, VW Group Australia managing director Jutta Dierks expects the car to climb the sales ladder to become the second best-seller after the Golf, with around 2000 buyers a year. The name change recognises the car's importance in the US, which accounts for one-third of all the 6.6 million Jettas ever sold. It's the single most popular European badge stateside, outselling the Golf five to I one. The Jetta has already been on sale for six months in the US and all markets will be supplied from a factory in Mexico. At the low-key European launch of the Jetta in Germany last week, high-calibre executives like Bernhard were conspicuous by their absence. Bernhard was busy talking to his previous employer, signing off on a joint venture for a seven-seat people-mover designed for the US market. Australia ranks just eleventh in the league table of Bora/Jetta markets and the car has drifted off the radar for local buyers. However, the new car will follow the Golfs punt on diesel engines, which have turbocharged local sales. AustraIia's slow burning flirtation with
diesels, kept alight by Peugeot and Mercedes over decades, has suddenly flared with the Golf and one-third of buyers now opt for either the 1.9 or 2-litre TDI, exceeding VW's expectations five fold. Since taking up the post in January, Dierks has committed to offering diesels across the VW range and believes passenger car diesels could eventually be 10 per cent of the market a long way behind the 45 per cent in Europe, but a huge leap over the handful usually sold. An early opportunity to test that forecast will come with the face lifted Polo due in October. The l.4-litre petrol engine carries over but the Australian subsidiary is examining the 1.9-litre TDI available in Europe, which could address criticisms that the small hatch is underpowered. The slow-selling Polo Classic sedan, Australia's first passenger car import from China, will be discontinued as its 1.6-litre petrol cannot meet emission regulations. The Jetta itself arrives in the first quarter next year with the 2-litre TDI engine from the Golf selling along side the 2-litre FSI direct injection petrol and a performance version - dubbed GLI in the US - offering the turbocharged 2-litre FSI from the Golf GTI. Transmissions will include six-speed manuals and automatics, with the popular DSG sequential manual available in diesel and turbo models. Like the revised Polo, the Jetta adopts the new VW face with incisive-looking headlights, twin circular tail-lights with red surround and a deep grille (chromed in the Jetta's case). The Jetta has grown a huge l8cm longer than the previous Bora, with much of the extra length behind the rear wheels to offer a 527-litre boot. Dierks hopes the car will help satisfy the current appetite for mid-size sedans fed by the Mazda 6, Honda Accord and Subaru liberty all of which are enjoying record sales. Prices are expected to start around $32,000 With two trim levels. Remarkably similar in appearance but larger, the Passat arrives in the second quarter next year with the same 1O3kW/320Nm 2.0litre diesel and the possibility of a new 125kw 2.0-litre TDI which enters I Production in October and filters through the entire VW range eventually. With four valves per cylinder, high-pressure piezo injectors and counterrotating balance wheels, the 125kW diesel promises improved refinement, power delivery
and torque increased to 350Nm from just l800rpm. Further expansion of the diesel lineup ~ will come later next year with the Touareg 3.0-litre V6 TDI, with 165kW and 500Nm. This unit, already offered in the Audi A6 in ~ Australia, comes from a different family of engines that uses common rail technology. It will expand Touareg diesel options to three, with a 128kW five-cylinder 2.5-litre and 230kW 5.O-litre VIO. What Volkswagen really needs, though, is a compact SUV, and at the Jetta launch it confirmed development of a Golf-based miniTouareg. Spy photographs have begun appearing on the internet. Expected to offer fourwheel drive in a high-riding body - and already dubbed the Beduin by several internet sites the Toyota RAV4 rival I should arrive in 2007. Meanwhile, the Passat supplies the underpinnings to plug another hole in the VW range. A folding metal roof convertible called EOS will be unveiled by Bernhard at the Frankfurt show next month before going on sale next year. Based on the ‘Concept C’ shown at Geneva 2004, the drop-top is larger than the Jetta but smaller than the Passat, with seating for four. At the 2003 Frankfurt show, Volkswagen unveiled a two-seat roadster called the ‘Concept R’, with a mid-mounted V6 driving the rear-wheels and O-1OOkm time of 5.3 seconds. It if goes into production it could be pitched against the BMW Z4 and its ilk. Meanwhile, enthusiasts can look forward to the high-performance R32 Golf, which packs a 184kW 3.2-litre V6, permanent four wheel drive and 6.2 second sprint to IOOkm/h, with the optional DSG transmission. And despite slow sales for its Phaeton luxury sedan, VW can still see a future for premium models. In Europe, the new entry level 3.0-litre diesel V6 Phaeton has lifted sales 25 per cent and if the car ever comes to Australia - unlikely before its facelift in 2007 - this could be the engine of choice. Bernhard has also reportedly approved a premium coupe-style four-door sedan similar in concept to the Mercedes CIS for delivery in around three years. •
