President’s Report Michael Cronin, VWCV President Welcome to the October Edition of the Wagensville News. Firstly you will notice that the name at the top is different this month, for those that were not at the AGM last month. Paul has stood down and I have been lucky enough to be accepted to the position of President for this year. I would like to start by thanking all those members of the out going committee for their efforts over the past year and in some cases many years. I hope that I can carry on the good work that Paul and Andrew before him have done in building up the club to what it is today, over 450 members is pretty good. I also hope if anyone has any problems with what is happening within the club they feel they can discuss any issues with me, as far too often good clubs can be destroyed by internal problems that could have been easily resolved.

Thanks to Jan and John Stevens for organising a great day to Eildon and to all those who braved the weather to turn up with their teddies. Apart from the array of teddies including a couple of maladjusted psycho teddies Jan and John also managed to arrange some spectacular rain and hail watching for lunchtime entertainment. A good day was had by all. Inclosing I would like to remind everyone that there will be an auction at the October meeting so bring along all those unwanted VW treasures for Andrew to Auction. The November meeting will include a Model Car show with a prize for what the judges consider the best model. Andrew will be using the models to show potential DOVW judges what to look for.

People’s Car Literally, the word “Volkswagen” means “People’s Car.” In Germany before the 1930’s, there had been many efforts to create simple cars that everyone could afford, but none met with profound success. Almost all cars attempted before 1930, ended up costing more than the average worker’s yearly wage. In 1933, Adolf Hitler met with Ferdinand Porsche to discuss Hitler’s idea of a Volkswagen. Hitler proposed a people’s car that could carry 5 people, cruise up to 62mph, return 33mpg, and cost only 1000 Reich Marks. This was an opportunity for Porsche to push his previous idea of a small car forward, as was to design a real people’s car for the citizens of Germany.

Porsche designated this design the Type 60, but it was soon changed to the experimental V1 which was completed and driving by 1935.

After extensive testing of the VW3s, the next version, the VW30 was created, and in all, 30 were produced in 1939.

The V1 design was updated to the VW3 design and three cars were produced and put through rigorous testing in 1936.

Several VW38s (pre-production models) and VW39s (demonstration cars) were produced to show how the final version of the car would look.

The VW3s had metal floors, swing axle rear transmissions, Porsche’s front independent suspensions, and backbone floorpans. Several engines were tested, and eventually a flat four cylinder aircooled four stroke engine was chosen. This 22.5 hp four cylinder “Boxer” engine was roughly the same as the engines that would later be incorporated into VW Beetles that are still produced today.

This edition of the VW39s was the basis of the Beetle that we know today.

Blue Lake, Mount Gambier.

South East South Australia

Sojourn November 4, 5 6 and 7 2006 In the wake of the cancellation of the 7 day trip in November 2006 a few intrepid VWCV members have decided to organise a low key “do it yourself” 4 day adventure to Mount Gambier in the Lower South East of South Australia. Mount Gambier is just over the Victorian/ South Australian border and around 436 kms from Melbourne. It takes about 5 1⁄2 hours of relaxed Western District driving to get there. The relatively unstructured plan is to meet in Deer Park on Saturday 4 November at around 7am. The route over to Mount Gambier will be via Ballarat, Hamilton, Casterton and Coleraine. Once we are in MG we can organise, either individually or as a group, a few low key outings with choices from such varied options as exploring extinct volcanos, visiting subterranean caves under the very heart of Mount Gambier, motoring up the Glenelg River by charter boat to visit the Princess Margaret Rose Caves, having an occasional cold SA ale at magnificent National Trust classified Mount Gambier hotels, driving north up to Penola and Naracoorte for a day of antique shop browsing,

more spectacular caves and sampling world famous red wines at the Coonawarra wineries and, for those piscatorily inclined, a spot of bream fishing at the much celebrated Donovan’s Landing near Nelson. The plan is to stay at the extremely well appointed Blue Lake Caravan Park near, naturally enough, the Blue Lake in Mount Gambier. Those already planning to go intend to take powered camping sites. If you want to come along you will need to book your own accommodation, either at this caravan park or elsewhere. Given the short lead time we will, in the words of the great Indiana Jones, make up our plans as we go along. It is a BYO food and plan-to-be-self-sufficient event. This should be a great experience for those who are interested and able to go along. There is much to see and do in this beautiful but, sadly, seldom visited area of our great country. Car Parking at the RACV Club A temporary arrangement up to the end of October has been negotiated with the Club, which will mean your car parking will cost $5.00. Park in the car park as normal taking your ticket on entry. Bring your ticket to confirm parking and the Club will issue you with a discount voucher. When you present your original docket into the pay machine it will show parking fee of $10 is required. Then insert the discount voucher into the machine, which will then show a fee of $5.00 is required. Pay the $5.00 as normal. Discount vouchers can only be used once on the night of the meeting.

Oktoberfest Cruise

Hello VW petrol heads. Motor racing is back!

Sunday October 29th 2006

My name is Chris Antonello and I am the new club Motorsport Officer. After a long pitstop, the club motor racing is back on track. We need lots of competitors, officials and spectators to help keep motor racing in the VW club, so it does not come to a permanent pitstop. I need to gauge interest level so we can some events off to a rolling start. Suggestions for the different types of events are welcomed. The VWCV will celebrate Oktoberfest in true Bavarian style with a luncheon at the Cuckoo Restaurant in Olinda. The Cuckoo has been in existence for nearly fifty years and specialises in serving a wonderful array of customary dishes within a smorgasboard format. Three courses will be on offer and you can select what you wish from the buffet. The cost of the luncheon will be $34.90 for Adults and $17.90 for children under 12. Live entertainment is also included. The Croydon Hotel car park, Croydon (Melway ref. 50 E2) will be the meeting point at 10am. The VWCV has a limited booking for 50 people. A $10 deposit will confirm your attendance and must be paid by October 17th. It is advisable to confirm ASP by completing the booking form below with a cheque/money order to the Club address.

Our first motor racing event will be a display at the DOTVW. I will need some assistance on a Motorsport stand as well as anyone wishing to display their race car. Photos and articles would be most appreciated. Just give me a call on the above number.

Teddy Bears BBQ The VWCV Teddy Bears BBQ Sunday 24 September 2006 I heard the forecast just before I went to bed. Strong wind warnings, gale warnings, road weather alerts, rain, hail and snow down to 600 metres, probably the worst weather forecast I had heard in months and we had planned a significant club cruise on this day! The wind howling through the trees outside our bedroom woke me at 3.21am. I could not sleep. I lay there thinking about the likelihood of cancelling the event at the 10am meeting place believing that we may get only 3 or 4 cars, if we were lucky. At 9.30am we had around 6 or 7 cars parked outside the Croydon Hotel. Over the next half hour our ranks swelled to nearly 20, the weather was cold, windy but no rain, as yet. The cruise was most certainly on! Just how keen are these VWCV members! We headed off at 10am with 22 cars and

proceeded up the highway through Lilydale. The multi-coloured kaleidoscope convoy re-grouped at Coldstream and went through Healesville, turning many an admiring head in the main street. We continued up through the windy bits of The Black Spur, past the sign that told us we were entering the Mystic Mountains (like something out of The Lord of the Rings). The cars were running beautifully and the roadside scenery was truly breathtaking with gigantic mountain ash and tree ferns on both sides of the winding mountain road. We continued on up through Buxton, Taggerty, Thornton and into Eildon. Along the way we picked up additional local club members and our ranks had now swelled to 28, quite unbelievable. The cars, drivers, passengers and teddies parked up at the well appointed Apex Park on the banks of the Pondage after a very enjoyable 111 km run from Croydon.

The number of cars, the location, the camaraderie and the sunshine made the effort well worthwhile. The relaxed BBQ/picnic lunch was conducted under the fantastic facilities provided at the venue, which included a roofed enclosure containing tables, chairs, free BBQs, toilets and views over the Pondage. After a very pleasant lunch and opportunity to mingle we set up the teddies for judging in three categories, 1) Rat Teddy, 2) Best Dressed Teddy and 3) Best Original Teddy. Jan Stevens and Kingsley Morrison were judging the competition that was very keenly contested. While the judging was underway we had a minor torrential downpour, a bit of hail and some strong winds but these all abated after around 20 minutes. Back to reasonably sunny, stable, but cold, weather. How lucky had we been! The judges finally concluded their deliberations and announced the results.

The winning teddies were owned by 1) Matt Kinsey, 2) Tracy Williams and 3) Ann Davies. By now it was just after 3pm, the clouds in the west looked ominous and it was starting to get colder. Time to head home. Most members, passengers and teddies headed off within the next 30 minutes and, from all reports, everyone enjoyed the scenic drive home. We later found out that the

overnight temperature on Sunday plummeted down to -2 C. It was a terrific day that was salvaged from an anticipated disaster. It just goes to show that you can never, never predict what is going to happen on a VWCV cruise. Thanks heaps to all members, passengers and teddies that decided to take the punt and come along.
