NOVEMBER November 15th Day of the Volkswagen 09 See cover and Insert for full event details.

Despite the dismal weather (remember AFL Grand Final weekend?) We had 14 VWs and around 20 members from the club attend the Volkswagen Club of Victoria’s Showcase at Federation Square. We had to wait nearly three years to get our day at this venue, such is the level of interest from Victorian motoring clubs in featuring in this once a month show. We started parking up in the Russell Street extension from around 10am. At 10.30am the very friendly Federation Square security men, who were with us all day to keep an eye on proceedings, and make sure our beloved VWs remained unmolested, started to move us in to park in the Atrium forecourt. The Atrium was the perfect place to be on the day as we were out of the wind and rain and experienced almost tropical conditions compared with what other Melbournians were exposed to that day. The security men directed us to park the cars in what soon became a very colourful and co-ordinated VW display

and they even put oil drip trays under each car. These gentlemen learnt something very useful that day about VWs when they initially put the drip trays at the front of the air cooled models until we diplomatically let them know that they are rear engined motor cars. We had several Beetles including a 1953 Split Window, a Herbie, which of course was a great hit with heaps of kids (with a lot of photos taken), a couple of beautiful Split Window early Kombies, several Kombi Campers, a Type 3 Notch, a 74 TS Passat, a late model Golf and a 2009 Eos 2 litre. As we all know the VW marque is a great one for the extent of model variation and that always adds heaps of interest to anyone looking at the cars. The cars on display at the Showcase were no exception and the overall impact when combined with the architecture and lay out of the Atrium was something very special. Even with the cold, windy and wet weather there were heaps of people walking up Flinders Street, through the display and into the shops. Several

buses that pulled up out the front also contributed to the numbers of interested on-lookers. I must have spoken to 30 or more groups of people who stopped to have a look at our 1975 Kombi Camper, most of our other club members had much the same amount of public interaction. There were a number of overseas visitors to Melbourne that also really enjoyed the car show. One thing that we always find at any public showing of our VWs is that almost everyone that stops to have a chat has a VW related story to tell and that day was no exception. We gave out lots of VWCV related information material and have probably enlisted a few new members. Quite a few people had seen the publicity for the event and had travelled in to the city to have a look at what was on show. Holly and Fiona who looked after the Shannons stand did a great job and were happy with the outcome and their involvement in the event. They were able to secure a sheltered spot out of the weather and in the midst of some pristine VWs which made their time

SwapMeet 09

there much more comfortable. The only car related problem that day was that Vaughan’s Beetle would not start so his car was a late casualty but he still came in to the city by train to enjoy the day. The time went all too quickly and at 2.30pm we had to pack up and head off home. Every club member who was there considered this event to have been a huge success. We snatched a very enjoyable, uncomplicated, easy to organise and well received day out of something that really looked at the start to be doomed. Just goes to show that if an event is VW related you should always give it a go, no matter what. Over my time in the club this has happened on that many occasions I have come to the conclusion that the Almighty likes VWs.

Another fantastic VWCV Swap Meet for the year of 2009. The late closure of the shed and the move to an outdoor event didn’t keep the VW enthusiasts away and their hopes of finding that missing piece of the Volkswagen puzzle. 36 Swap sites and 280 plus punters through the gate this year. Thankyou to all those who attended and volunteers on the day.

The Federation Square event management later received an independent event report describing our Showcase as being “very cool”. We have booked the venue again for September 2011. Thankyou for attending. John Stevens.
