NOVEMBER November 15th Day of the Volkswagen 09 See Ad full event details.

The weekend weather forecast looked a bit ordinary with rain, hail, thunderstorms and chilly winter weather predicted for the two days of this cruise. Undaunted our stalwart 22 members in 14 VWs came from near (Seaford) and far (Stawell) to meet at Hungry Jacks in Cranbourne at 9am. At 9.30am a fine array of VWs, including numerous Beetles, Kombies, a Golf, a T5, and a new Tiguan, that is owned by Alice who was suitably attired with a captains hat, headed up the South Gippsland Highway in the rain and in general direction of Phillip Island. As usual Evan in his beloved Kombi volunteered to travel at the rear of the convoy to make sure we did not lose anyone on the way. At Tooradin we picked up Uldy and Jenny in their white Lennox Head Kombi (cost him $500 and $78 for a roadworthy would you believe) and proceeded on to the first stop at Wildlife Wonderland at Bass where we got out of the rain and had a look at their great exhibits including Wombats, Dingos, Reptiles,

Giant Spiders, a very, very cute baby Koala and a rather sad looking and rather dead 1.5 ton Great White Shark captured by mistake off Port Lincoln in SA and then shot. After that it was on to San Remo, by which time the rain had stopped and there was actually a bit of blue sky, to watch the famous Pelican feed at the fisherman’s co-operative. Not to be outdone by the Pelicans the humans also took advantage of the co-operative’s great fish and chips for lunch. Once re-fuelled we noted that the sky looked less ominous and, inspired by this development, we then headed over the island, visited the Chocolate Factory, went on past the GP Track and then on to The Nobbies. Most club members had a wind assisted walk along the boardwalk, past the nesting sea gulls and down to the infamous Blow Hole. We then retired to the Nobbies Centre for a quick browse and where we observed Michael Cronin stocking up on pirate paraphernalia for some undisclosed purpose. After being

blown back to our VWs we then headed to the caravan park in Cowes to settle in. A few lemonades were sampled in the late afternoon (dehydration is a very dangerous medical condition) during much VW related conversation. Dinner that night was at the Phillip Island RSL where the company, the atmosphere and the tucker were all really great. Some die-hards kicked on for a while after they returned to the caravan park and were, as a result, noticeably quieter the next day.

Day of the Volkswagen 2009. 60 Years of the Transporter Cavalcade One vehicle from each year of production will be selected for the DOTVW 09 cavalcade and display. Vehicles will be selected to best represent the range of features and body configurations available across the various production eras. Nominations are open to vehicles in all states of repair including original, restored, modified, works in progress or “as found” condition. The choice of the vehicles for the display will be at the discretion of the DOTVW committee.

MOTORSPORT EVENTS For information on Motorsports Events contact Michael Clark VWCV Motorsports Co ordinator on 9878 1554

Nominees must be current financial members of the Volkswagen Club of Victoria to be eligible and members may nominate more than one vehicle. All selected entrants will receive a specially minted 60th Anniversary of the Kombi car badge. Vehicles to be judged for DOTVW show categories are also eligible to enter for this display. Owners must make additional arrangements for their show and shine entry. For further information or full event details please contact Andrew Ermel T 9369 1360

Federation Square 27th September their eyes at its conclusion. One of the museum volunteers who had two tours in Vietnam (and was once a VW owner) personally took us around the Museum and gave us a first hand understanding of what it was like to be there and explained the practical use of the many exhibits, including tanks, helicopters and uniforms. Many club members concluded the visit by having lunch and coffee there before leaving and heading off home at around 1pm. The weekend had been power packed and had been very successful. Thanks to all the VW nuts that came along and contributed.

The morning saw us travel back to the Vietnam Veterans Association of Australia Museum at Newhaven on Phillip Island. We had the rest of Jan and John Stevens. the Ermel Clan, Chris A and Bernie come up from Melbourne and they met us at the museum. A total of 27 members spent the next 2 hours totally enthralled at what the museum had on show. Many of our members had experienced the impact that the Vietnam War had on Australia, mostly in a non-military involvement sense, and the 20 minute sound and light show that commenced the “tour” of the museum brought back heaps of memories and emotions. It was a very moving high tech presentation and more than one VWCV member had tears in

It is a long way off but the word is already out that accommodation at the Valla Beach Holiday Resort for the bi-annual VW Spectacular next year is already very limited. If you are intending to travel up for this terrific event scheduled for mid next year it might be wise to make a booking very soon. It is likely that there will be, as usual, a big VWCV contingent travelling up for this significant VW extravaganza. Contact Valla Beach Caravan Park on 02 6589 5555.
