VWCV September Annual General Meeting > What’s On >VWCV AGM: It’s the business end of the year.  Your input counts - help us fill committee positions for next year... >VWCV Mini Auction: Looking for hard to obtain parts, books, car models or some rare memorabilia? You never know what could be on offer at the VWCV’s monthly mini-auctions. >Free Refreshments: Free tea and coffee will be provided... >Plus: all the usual news, goss and reports... >VWCV September Annual General Meeting: Tuesday 19th September from 8pm RACV Club, Henty Room 501 Bourke Street, Melbourne

Paul’s Ramblings > Paul Kinsey - VWCV Club President Welcome to the September edition of the Wagensville News and my last in the role of Club President. I have really enjoyed my two year stint as President of our Club. I have been very fortunate to have a very competent and supportive committee, which has made my job easy. However, all good things must come to an end and I wish to give someone else a go at this exciting role. I’m pleased to report that the Club is in a very good situation with our financial position, the continuing increasing membership, a great Club magazine and a web site which is attracting many inquiries and is always up to date. Additionally, the events held over the last few months have proved very popular and it is great to see many new members in attendance. We are now moving into the “business” end of our year with the Club’s main money spinners, The “Swap Meet” at Bacchus Marsh on the 1st October and the “Day of the Volkswagen” on the 26th November at Cranbourne Racecourse. At both of these events, the organisers will require the assistance from our members on the day, so please hop in and lend a hand.

The more members that assist lessens the load on the helpers so we can all enjoy these great events. Don’t forget the “Teddy Bear” cruise to Eildon on the 24th September. This is the brainchild of Jan and John Stevens so we are promised a well-organised event. Don’t forget your Teddy, it doesn’t matter in what condition they are, new or well loved they will all be welcomed. The Club will bring the BBQ along but you will need to bring your food. The September meeting will be held in two parts, the normal General Meeting and then the Annual General Meeting (AGM). If you wish to nominate for a position on the committee for 2006/7, the forms are in the August magazine, so don’t hesitate, do it now. Finally I would to that all members for your support over the last two years and I look forward to the continuing growth of our Club. I’ll see you at the AGM on September 19th. •

VWCV Teddy Bears BBQ at Eildon > Sunday 24th September Attention all Teddy Bear lovers!

Here is the chance that you have been waiting for.   An opportunity to get your teddy bear (or bears) and take   him or her for a scenic drive in your VW up through some of the   most picturesque country in Victoria. He or she is guaranteed   to have a very enjoyable afternoon in the company of other   happy teddies, their owners and their trustworthy VWs.   A group teddy photo shoot is planned. This drive will take all of us through Lilydale, Healesville,   up and over the Black Spur, then through   Narbethong (and past the hotel where,   in 1959, Gregory Peck and Ava Gardner   nearly had a naughty weekend in the movie   ‘On The Beach’), Buxton, Thornton and then   finally Eildon. We plan to have a BBQ lunch,   some teddy bear activities and possibly   some big game fishing before eventually   packing up and returning mid-afternoon. We will meet at the car park of the Croydon Hotel, Melway reference 50 E2   at 9.30am for a 10am departure. Please note that this is a new and better departure point from that advised in the last edition of Wagensville News. The total return distance back to Croydon is around 220 km. BYO teddy and your own food for a BBQ, or picnic if you wish.   The Club BBQ will be transported up to Eildon to provide some flexibility.   Put your fishing gear in your VW if you want to catch your lunch.   Prizes will be awarded for certain teddy categories. Contact John or Jan on 03 9890 2548 AH.

Oktoberfest Cruise > Details on the cruise to the Cuckoo by Kingsley Morrison... Ever wanted to participate in traditional Oktoberfest festivities without having to travel to Europe? If so, then set aside Sunday October 29th in your diaries. The VWCV will celebrate Oktoberfest in true Bavarian style with a luncheon at the Cuckoo Restaurant in Olinda. The Cuckoo has been in existence for nearly fifty years and specialises in serving a wonderful array of customary dishes within a smorgasbord format. Three courses will be on offer and you can select what you wish from the buffet. The cost for the luncheon will be $34.90 for adults and $17.90 for children under 12. Live entertainment is also included. The VWCV has also decided to incorporate a short cruise to the Cuckoo via the Mount Dandenong observatory lookout. The Croydon Hotel car park, Croydon (Melway ref. 50 E2) will be the meeting point at 10am. The cruise will depart at 10.30am and continue further east along the Maroondah Highway to Dorset Road, where we shall turn right. Then a sharp left into Bellara Road to Manchester Road. A left turn will get us to Cambridge Road. Turning right at roundabout into Montrose Road will then take us directly to the picturesque Mount Dandenong Tourist Road. A short stop at the observatory lookout should enable an ideal photographic opportunity to fully capture the sensational scenery. Don’t forget your camera! Arrival at the Cuckoo should be at approximately 11.30am. The VWCV has a limited booking for 50 people. A $10 deposit will confirm your attendance and must be

paid by October 17th. It is advisable to confirm ASAP by completing the coupon on the next page with a cheque/money order to the Club address. I will also be distributing additional coupons at all Club events and meetings up until October 17th. •

All New VW Scirocco > From cars.uk.msn.com - 8/2006

Here is the new Scirocco, due in showrooms by 2008. VW may have billed it as a concept car, dubbed Iroc, but the missing ‘S’, ‘c’, ‘c’ and ‘o’ aren’t fooling us. Why else would the maker hold a special event in Berlin to show it? The maker says it’s to celebrate 30 years since the original Scirocco was launched. It’s even marked this by painting the concept in a very retro ‘70s metallic green, vivid enough to burn your retinas out. Smoke and mirrors. The squat, chunky stance is different to the original’s wedgey profile, more in line with the TT ‘Shooting Brake’ concept – but seems pretty much production-ready to us. The front grille hints at future VWs, we love the extra-wide windscreen, overlapping the A-pillars, and like the homage to the Golf with the C-pillar, too. Inside, it’s all architectural cool, with hints of the new TT (no bad thing). You can guess at the details: it’s probably based on the TT’s version of the Golf platform, will use a 2.0-litre turbo engine

from the Golf GTI, plus maybe the 3.2-litre V6 from the Golf R32. However, VW also states the concept will use a supercharged/turbocharged 210bhp TSI engine; interesting, as the engineer at the Golf TSI’s launch told us the technology was only for smaller engines, which suffer from torque deficiencies. Is this a policy change, and does it mean the next Golf GTI will use TSI tech? Exciting. As for Scirocco prices, we’d bet on a starter of £22k. And are off now to put in our order. •

VW Adventure to the Red Centre > By John Stevens... Attention VW Adventure to the Red Centre Photographers We would like to assemble a collection of the best photographs that were taken on the trip to 1) include a number on the club’s website and 2) produce an audio visual presentation to commemorate this great adventure. A copy of the presentation will be given to each participant, run at a future club meeting and also used for future club promotional purposes.

> Scenes from the VWCV’s Red Centre trip. Photos courtesy of Cheryl Ermel.

16

All the keen photographers that went on this adventure are asked to sort through the photos that they took over the 3 weeks and pick out their favourites. The chosen photos can be burnt onto a CD/s and posted to me, given to me at the next club meeting on Tuesday 19 September 2006 or emailed to me at john.stevens@justice.vic.gov.au. I will then arrange for the photos to be directed to David, our Club’s webmaster and for the production of the audio visual presentation. Christmas in July Cruise > By Andrew Mengyel...

> The Coach and Horses Inn at Clarkefield. Photo courtesy of Andrew Mengyel.

It was a cold and wet gloomy Sunday morning on the 23rd of July, when the Club members slowly began to meet up at the Deer Park BP Service Station. By 10.30am sufficient members had arrived for the early starters to come out of their warm VWs and meet up to talk about the days’ event, and any other catch up news of note. Some members - John and Jan Stevens with their beautifully restored two tone Splitty, and the Armstrong’s with their duckegg blue bay window Kombi, went to great lengths to show the spirit of Xmas in July! Some of the older Beetles were also adorned in various fashions with Christmas tinsel, noticed as we took off down the road. Then the time finally came round when about 20 vehicles had arrived, and after a short briefing given by Kingsley (organiser of the day) had been given, we all moved to our vehicles and drove away in convoy along the Western Highway towards Bacchus Marsh where we would rendezvous with a few other Club members before continuing on to Riddells Creek and our final destination, Clarkefield.

18

It was a great sight to see all the Beetles moving along at about 80km per hour on the freeway. It certainly made other road users take note of the variety, colour, type and condition of the Club members vehicles. Volkswagens of nearly all types were represented bar a few, with the Beetles in the front half of the convoy, a Golf, and the Kombis taking up the rear portion of the convoy, with a Mini convertible as a ring-in! We reached the hotel where we were to lunch at approximately 12.30pm. With everyone in high spirits and chatting eagerly, we all made our way to the warmth of the open fires inside, and then started to settle at our various tables ready for the meal after ordering drinks. The conversations then flowed on further after the ordering of the meals, which arrived very promptly. The choice of two soups, two mains and two desserts was ample for many. The meal was very enjoyable and well priced. After the meal was completed the raffle was drawn by two intrepid Santa Claus, with various members enjoying their winnings. Before long it was time to leave, and slowly some members left for the ride back to Melbourne, some 90 kilometres away. In conclusion a great day was had by all - thanks go to Kingsley Morrison for organising this event, which I am sure was enjoyed by everyone of the 50 plus people who attended on the day. •

A (Very) Quick New Beetle > Dave Evans

Ron Patrick is a 48 year old engineer who owns ECM (Engine Control and Monitoring), an American company making auto calibration instruments, and by any definition would be termed a “petrol-head”. Six years ago he grew tired of building hot-rods and decided to have some fun building an extreme vehicle, using a surplus ex-Navy General Electric T58-8F engine costing $250,000, which he fitted into a silver New Beetle after building a massive cage to mount, which puts out 1450 hp at its 13,000 rpm idle. With a little help from some like minded friends running interference,   he has taken an occasional (cop-free) midnight run on his local highway. A jet-boosted run is sufficient to run out of speedo at 140mph, with a   “guesstimate” of 160mph creating enough lift to gently raise the front of the   car off the ground. •

Cruise to Maldon > By Matt Kinsey...

It was a rather chilly morning as we all met at Mobil at Ardeer on the Western Ring Road. Around fifteen VWs had gathered for the trip up the Calder Highway to Castlemaine, from where we would be travelling by steam train to Maldon. We departed Ardeer about 10.15am for the hour long trip to Castlemaine. It was an uneventful trip as we proceeded in convoy up the Highway. We received many curious looks from overtaking cars. On arrival at Castlemaine our convoy of Volkswagens took over the car park at Castlemaine railway station. We were also joined at Castlemaine by some more keen VWCV members, including some who had made the trip from Mansfield to come on the train trip. The steam train between Castlemaine and Maldon on which we were travelling is operated by the Victorian Goldfields Railway. The VWCV had booked the exclusive Tambo parlour car for the return trip. It is a lavishly restored carriage complete with a rear observation platform. On the forward trip to Maldon it was at the front of the train directly

behind the locomotive. Many of us stood on the platform for a close up view of the hard working locomotive and to get a better appreciation of the passing scenery. Standing on the platform also got you a face full of smoke and soot. After a leisurely 45 minute journey to Maldon, we all meandered down to the main street to seek out some lunch and refreshments, while some VWCV members came prepared with their own picnic lunch. There were also a plethora of antique shops and museums to explore in the township during our three hour stop over. Everyone was a bit weary after a relaxed lunch and a couple of beers, and it was a slow walk back to the station. For the return trip to Castlemaine the Tambo car was positioned at the rear of the train, so we now had excellent views of the receding branch line and heavily timbered countryside. Thanks for the day should go to Jen Littlechild for organizing another very enjoyable cruise, and to the Victorian Goldfields Railway for their excellent service on the day. •
