Lenora Mathews Lifetime Achievement Award The Lenora Mathews Lifetime Achievement Award is presented each year by VOLUNTEER Hampton Roads to recognize outstanding leadership in community service. The award was created in 1998 to honor Mrs. Mathews, who served as Executive Director of VOLUNTEER Hampton Roads from 1970 until 1991. As Executive Director, Mrs. Mathews educated corporations, nonprofits and volunteers on the importance of professional volunteer management and the vital role volunteerism must play in the health of any community. She continues to be a passionate advocate for volunteer solutions that meet community needs.
2013 Lenora Mathews Lifetime Achievement honoree Robert M. Stanton Chairman Stanton Partners, Inc. Robert M. Stanton began his real estate career when he joined Goodman Segar Hogan, Inc., which he ultimately went on to buy and then sell as an interest to Dominion Capital. In 1993, he organized Stanton Partners, Inc., specializing in commercial real estate investments. Since that time, Stanton Partners has been involved in the development of numerous high profile buildings and complexes. Over the past 40 years, Mr. Stanton has served in various roles with local organizations. Currently, Mr. Stanton serves on the boards of ACCESS College Foundation, Greater Norfolk Corporation, Old Dominion University Real Estate Foundation, Virginia Maritime Heritage Foundation, Town Point Club, TowneBank Norfolk Board of Directors and Virginia Port Authority. He also serves as Chairman Emeritus of the Chesapeake Bay Wine Classic, which he founded with his wife Eleanor Stanton. Mr. Stanton has been honored on numerous occasions for his service to the community and the real estate industry. He was named one of the Five Outstanding Young Men in Virginia, First Citizen of Virginia Beach, Outstanding Business School Alumnus by Old Dominion University, Distinguished Alumnus Award Recipient by Old Dominion University, Executive of the Year by Professional Secretaries International, Distinguished Eagle Scout by the Boys Scouts of America, Honorary Member of Beta Gamma Sigma, the National Honorary Business Society for the recognition of scholarship and leadership in business and management, Colgate W. Darden, Jr., Scouter Citizen of the Year, City of Norfolk Downtowner of the Year, and recipient of the Humanitarian Award for the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities. He has been appointed by four different Virginia governors to serve on the boards of various state agencies over the past 25 years. The Robert M. Stanton Endowed Chair of Real Estate and Economic Development in the Old Dominion University College of Business and Public Administration is named in his honor.

College Changes Everything Nehemiah Thrash, Jr., M.D. - Portsmouth VA Education:
High School; B.S., Virginia Tech; M.D., Eastern Virginia Medical School Current Position: Internal Medicine, Hospitalist at Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News Proudest Moment: Becoming the first college graduate in my family. Making a Difference: In addition to continually striving to be a more excellent husband, father and physician, one day I would like to return to my hometown of Portsmouth and open a free clinic to serve those in need. I also would like to play some type of role toward improving the public education system.
“I like to say, ACCESS found me. I always had big dreams about my future. I was a student in need of a scholarship and doing well in school, but not performing at a level that easily commands the large scholarship funds I needed. My ACCESS advisor helped me navigate every step of the way, from applying for college acceptance, to finding the money necessary to complete my education at Virginia Tech. They were always there supporting me with genuine interest, advice and practical assistance. I am grateful.”
Congratulations!
