Currently, the network has nearly 7,000 providers, who have collectively given over $9.4 million worth of services. Working with other nonprofit leaders, Dr. Van Dahlen developed the Community Blueprint Network, a national initiative and online tool to assist communities in more effectively and strategically supporting veterans and military families. A Letter from the HRCVC President It’s difficult to believe, but another successful year has flown by for the Hampton Roads Corporate VOLUNTEER Council (HRCVC). Not only have we grown in number of member companies, but also as individuals collaborating for a better community. From Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service to Family VOLUNTEER Day or Global Youth VOLUNTEER Day to the Back 2 School initiative, the lives of many in Hampton Roads have been enriched through care and commitment. It has been encouraging to see the Council’s engagement and effusive consideration for the various needs of our nonprofit partners. Each HRCVC meeting included concerted efforts to match skills, resources and best practices to demand and opportunity. As I developed relationships with my business partners, I found the spirit of volunteerism “alive and well” in our socially responsible corporate world. This was evident in
formal Leadership Conferences and Board Boot Camps and informally while simply enjoying a game of Ping Pong during an entertaining fundraiser series. It has been a privilege serving as the 2013 HRCVC President. I look forward to maximizing current relationships, developing new bonds and assisting the HRCVC in “…encouraging, building and helping to strengthen corporate engagement in our community.” To that end, I ask “How will you make a difference today?”

Back 2 School Program This year, the cost of school supplies increased 7.3%; which can cause students to start the school year at a disadvantage if they cannot afford to purchase all of the needed supplies. In 2013, the HRCVC was able to nearly double the amount of school supplies collected in 2012 and donated 300 backpacks filled with necessary school supplies to three local Boys & Girls Club of America chapters located in Hampton Roads. Family VOLUNTEER Day
Family VOLUNTEER Day is designed to demonstrate and celebrate the power of families who volunteer together, supporting their community. Locally, volunteers of all ages participate in Family VOLUNTEER Day where they pack over 16,000 non-perishable food items that are donated to 12 local shelters, and the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia. Additionally, HRCVC members volunteer at each nonprofit to help distribute the food to clients and participate in an on-site volunteer project. It is a remarkable experience for volunteers to see first-hand, the benefit that their efforts make.
Curbside consulting According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, the value of skills-based volunteers can be 500% greater than the value of traditional volunteering for nonprofits. The HRCVC wants to be the catalyst in Hampton Roads that enhances traditional volunteering by adding a skills-based volunteer model. Curbside Consulting will pair nonprofit organizations that have specific needs with the skills and expertise of Hampton Roads business professionals. . Global Youth VOLUNTEER Day Global Youth VOLUNTEER Day is celebrated each year in over 100 countries, with young citizens working together to address the world’s most critical issues and change their communities. Engaging local students in volunteerism not only benefits the Hampton Roads community, but also has a positive impact on the individual volunteer. Members of the HRCVC are committed to helping to develop the young minds of the future of Hampton Roads at Global Youth VOLUNTEER Day. VOLUNTEERHR
The Hampton Roads Corporate VOLUNTEER Council (HRCVC) is a program of VOLUNTEER Hampton Roads that was started in 1998. Building Your Business Through Corporate Social Responsibility
why doing good is good for business In recent years, the idea of businesses giving back to the communities in which they do business has taken on new meaning – it is now commonly referred to as corporate social responsibility (CSR). Many companies boast of a CSR program or component in their business model. Companies are no longer solely giving money to aid organizations, but also are giving the time and talent of their employees and giving a corporate voice to causes. Most CSR programs are centered around strong employee volunteer programs. Businesses are finding the benefits to such programs are numerous - increased staff engagement, new market opportunities, innovation of new products, improved public relations, attracting the best and brightest recruits, and so much more. A new trend is taking shape in using volunteer projects for a unique team-building experience to allow employees to learn new skills, increase communication and work on leadership development. Implementing this type of program is also less costly than a formal team-building event. According to the Trends of Excellence in Employee Volunteering Series by Points of Light Institute, companies can save up to 75% per employee by implementing an employee volunteer program in lieu of a traditional training program.4 In addition, employee satisfaction leads to greater employee retention. Steve Deflin, President & CEO of America’s Charities states, “From a bottom-line perspective, every recent study shows that engaged workers are far less likely to leave an employer and they are more likely to develop new skills than disengaged employees.” It is estimated that employee-turnover costs drain employers over $11 billion per year.5 In order to reverse these figures and build a company with a strong mission to its customers and community, a well-planned CSR strategy is essential.
