President & CEO, Priority Automotive
Ellmer began his automotive career at Colonial Chevrolet under the tutelage of the late Josh Darden. He credits Darden with setting an example that emphasized the importance of integrity, service, community participation and personal commitment. Ellmer launched his own brand-Priority Automotive-in 1997 in Chesapeake, Virginia. The newly branded Priority dealerships emphasized unparalleled customer service with the “we put you first” philosophy. In 2001, “Priorities for Life” was launched and has become the company’s differentiating hallmark. Building upon the success of those initial dealerships, the Priority sign soon rose in front of Acura, Honda and Hyundai along with the creation one of the largest Toyota/Scion dealerships in America. Expansion to Richmond included Toyota, Nissan and Volkswagen dealerships, collision repair centers and independent used car businesses. Charlotte, NC followed with the acquisition of a Honda dealership. Steadfast growth and acquisition has today’s Priority with ownership of 19 dealerships from Washington to Charlotte, numerous collision repair centers and used car dealerships with over 2000 employees. Priority is ranked among the top dealer groups in the U.S.

2016 LENORA MATHEWS LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD HONOREE
Just as he never forgot those early business lessons, Dennis has always remembered the importance of community. From Priority’s first day, he encouraged employees to give back to the community as he led by example. In addition to his philanthropy, Dennis serves on boards and committees, many committed to improving the lives of children in Hampton Roads. He is credited with rescuing the 48-year old Charity Bowl and raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for children’s charities. He is active in numerous professional and civic organizations on the local, state and national level. Dennis is very much a son of Hampton Roads. Born in Chincoteague, Virginia, he grew up in Ocean View, attended Holy Trinity and graduated from Norview High School. He has been married to Jan for 37 years, raised three great children and resides in Virginia Beach. LENORA MATHEWS LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD PAST HONOREES 1998

VOLUNTEER HAMPTON ROADS ANNUAL REPORT | 5
Volunteerism is a Priority for all of us.
At Priority we don’t just raise money for those in need. We raise our hands when volunteers are needed. With more than 2000 employees, that’s a lot of volunteers! You’ll find us giving our time to organizations supporting healthcare, education, little league sports, animal welfare, food banks and many other non-profits. Doing our share is a part of being a member of the Priority family.
It’s easy to see the importance of giving back when you have a leader who lives it every day.
Dennis Ellmer approaches charity and volunteerism with the same passion that he does his business. And he expects the same from his management team. It’s a high bar, to be sure. But we welcome the challenge. After all, he doesn’t expect anything from us that he doesn’t expect from himself. Congratulations Dennis for an honor well deserved. –The Priority Management Team.
HYDRAULIC DREDGING • ENVIRONMENTAL ENHANCEMENT WETLAND CREATION • BEACH NOURISHMENT Cottrell Contracting Corporation is a proud supporter of VOLUNTEER Hampton Roads and congratulates Dennis Ellmer for receiving the Lenora Mathews Lifetime Achievement Award.
A FEW TIMES A YEAR, WE PAY
OUR EMPLOYEES NOT TO
SHOW UP. Giving back is a wonderful way to lift up. Our employees – nearly 4,000 strong in the U.S., Canada and Europe – support that mission in both time and money. Our philanthropy spans a range of non-profit causes, from human services to the arts. We match employee contributions 100% and we give paid time-off for participation in Volunteer Days. Because when communities profit, we all win.
“We just want to thank you,” Dennis Ellmer, for making Monarch Bank and the Hampton Roads community a Priority.
