Celebrating 40 years of recognizing volunteers in the Hampton Roads community
A Conversation with Lenora Mathews… Lenora Mathews, the first executive director of VOLUNTEER Hampton Roads, began the volunteer awards 40 years ago. She saw an article in a magazine from another city talking about providing public recognition for the hard work volunteers were contributing to organizations and thought it was something that needed to be brought to our area. So in 1975, a small luncheon was hosted to honor 8 volunteers that had impacted local organizations through volunteerism. In 40 years this small idea has become the premier volunteer recognition event in our community with nearly 500 attendees and volunteers in 10 categories being honored. Last year alone, the value of volunteer service recognized at the event exceeded $3,000,000 with over 130,000 hours of service. Lenora’s passion for volunteerism came from her own experiences volunteering in college and as a Navy wife, which eventually led her to lead the first local volunteer center. When we asked Lenora what she would want everyone to remember 40 years from now she said, “To volunteer is our greatest privilege.”

Message from The executive Director, Kate M. Meechan, MBA One of the most important aspects of my job is the privilege to recognize our community of volunteers. Each year I am humbled by the contributions our citizens make to the community; the selfless acts to give of themselves and their precious time to help others; the collaboration and comradery of organizations to uplift other organizations; and the creativity and energy to push forward and solve our greatest social issues. Our forward thinking leader, Lenora Mathews, in 1975 knew how important it was to recognize this impact and hosted the first volunteer recognition event in our community. 40 years later, the prominence of our volunteers in the community remains steadfast. I would like to think that in 2055 I will be attending our 80th anniversary of the event, still humbled by all our community does to serve others.
