hen friends get together and make a plan, sometimes amazing things happen. Such is the case with five friends that became visionaries. Theo Mundell, Sandee and Ken Ragsdale along with Bobby and Mary Lou Coleman, all had worked together in Orlando. They realized after running into each other and socializing in New Smyrna Beach, they had all moved from the Orlando area to New Smyrna Beach. One thing led to another, and the re-kindled friendship grew. The group heard that a local bar was for sale. It needed work and some TLC. They made an offer to the owners and it was accepted. The friends had a vision, and that vision became Merk’s Bar & Grill. After months of remodeling, planning and hard work, they opened in March 2005. Merk’s has been noted as “ The Locals Favorite” for eight and a half years. Anyone can open a sports bar, but their vision was different. They wanted great food, a lively atmosphere, family friendly, and a full bar. A place that offered something for everyone to enjoy. The sports bar is of course the center of action. Merk’s is home to all Cleveland Browns fans and has their own room dedicated to them. They have a pool and game room, a patio deck complete with large flat screen TV’s. In fact there are tables that even have your own private TV for your viewing pleasure as well as huge flat screen TV’s placed all around the dining, game room and bar. Shoes. Dress as casual as you wish. To have a successful business, you must have a fantastic staff. They do! Owner and Daytime Manager Sandee Ragsdale makes things happen at Merk’s. She and G.M. Brian Lapierre share the task of the day to day operations at Merk’s. Making sure that the ship is running smoothly and your visit is a fun and memorable experience. Brian tries to be transparent and is almost always behind the scene, but he loves to chat with the guests to be sure they are having a good time. Chef Jon heads up the kitchen along with Sous Chef Billy Winslow. He is more affectionately know as “The Soup Nazi “ as he can create a soup from just about anything with delicious results every time. Chef Jon comes with lots of experience. He has been Head Chef at many notable restaurants in the area. He can “Wow” you with his fantastic menu items. His wings and sauces are legendary. He and the owners have even created a wing sauce called “Frankenstein Sauce”. It is so popular, word has it they are planning on bottling it. Jon makes everything fresh daily, in-house. Even the salad dressings and sauces are made from scratch, as well as the homemade soups. The sandwich board is extensive, salads abound. The burgers are nothing less than grand! In fact everything on the menu is huge in portions, fantastic in flavor and very affordable. Seafood, choice steaks, chicken of almost every variety and more, is available on their menu. If you like late night dining, the full menu is available until 1:45 am, 7 days a week. They have on and off menu specials every day. The “Happy Hour” starts at 11am and goes to 7 pm, every day as well. Merk’s is lively with daily events like Live Acoustic Guitar music every Friday night. Audience Participating Trivia on Wednesday nights. Poker nights on Tuesdays and Karaoke with John Valerio on Thursday nights. They also have a Full Service Liquor Bar with all of your favorite libations and 100 Beers from around the world. ur restaurant feature this month is about a delightful place to dine in Ormond Beach that is fun and delicious. The Charlie Horse Restaurant has been a localâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s favorite for over twenty years. Current owners Dan and Margie Peckham bought the restaurant in 1994 keeping the name and the general concept the same. They worked very hard to create a menu and atmosphere that would appeal both young and old alike. When Dan and Margie assumed ownership of the Charlie Horse, there were only seven employees an the payroll. Today there are forty including their daughter, Lori who is the general manager, and their son, Daniel who is a manger and server. Thankfully, several staff members chose to continue working with Dan and Margie, many whom are still there today. Their dedication and commitment to quality and consistency proved to be the winning formula for the success of this family owned restaurant. Initially the Charlie Horse was only open for dinner. At that time, there really were not many Ormond Beach-side restaurants open for lunch, so the owners decided to open for lunch, They transformed the Charlie Horse into a very popular lunch spot where customers can enjoy the full menu or take advantage of one of the unbeatable Monday thru Friday lunch specials. Charlie Horse, I ordered the famous “ All you can Eat Crab Leg special” and my wife the Baby Back Rib Dinner. The crab legs were sweet, tender and freshly prepared, served with drawn butter. I also had a fresh garden salad. Trust me, this was a feast as they were delightful and the servers just kept them coming. My wife enjoyed the Baby Back Ribs that were melt in your mouth tender (I know because I tried them) along with roasted red garlic potatoes and a fresh garden salad. She claimed that these were the best Baby Backs she had ever tasted. The menu was filled with so many wonderful selections that we found it difficult to make up our minds, especially with the wonderful scents that filled the air coming from the kitchen. They have an array of items like homemade Crab Bisque,Spinach and Shrimp Dip, and a variety of Seafood, Rib, Chicken dishes, Steaks, Burgers and specialty Salads. We found the staff to be friendly, helpful fast and courteous. With the atmosphere and Staff, you feel more like family than patron at The Charlie Horse. This Restaurant is the place to go if you are looking for a casual atmosphere and a great meal at a reasonable price. This has been a local’s favorite spot for over twenty years. ou don’t have to go to a 5 star restaurant to find great talent and fantastic food. Sometimes it can be found in a small restaurant in your own neighborhood. Chef Filippo Vaglica is a perfect example. Fil’s Italian Pizzeria opened in October 2010 with Filippo and his mother Filippa Vaglica running this quaint Italian restaurant in Port Orange. Fil was raised in the the business. He started working in the kitchen at the age of 13 making pizzas and sautee’s at Cela Luna, their family restaurant. He has had little formal training as a chef. However, under the tutelage of his father Joe Vaglica and a family that has been in the business for generations, He has learned the art very well. Years of family recipes and experience have given Fil all the expertise of a chef. Fil’s Father Joe, was from Brooklyn and his Mother from Sicily, Italy. They met in Brooklyn and married. His Father was in the restaurant business there. Together they raised their children in the restaurant business in Florida. Owning restaurants became a family tradition. Most people from the area remember the Whistle Stop Italian Restaurant and Cela Luna Italian Restaurant, both in Edgewater, Florida. Both very popular Italian restaurants for many years before Fil’s father passed away. Fil’s Sister, Caterina Tiano and her husband Vittorio also have an Italian restaurant in New Smyrna Beach named Tiano’s. There are aunts, uncles and cousins, all restaurant owners across the country as well. The rich history of the Vaglica family adds quality and authenticity to the fine offerings of Fil’s. Most all of the recipes are from family members, that have been handed down over time. All tried, true and authentic Italian recipes. Pizza in Town! “ Fil’s now serves gluten free pizzas as a choice. But, that is not all that you will find there. They have a wide and varied menu, with offerings such as Chicken Cacciatore, homemade Lasagna, Gnocchi Bolognese, Scungili Marinara, Mussels Marinara, just to name a few. There are ten different varieties of pizza, all delicious with your favorite toppings. Also a medium Stromboli that is a feast. They offer a large Stromboli that measures 16 inches and can feed more than a small family. There are tasty treats like Pepperoni Rolls, Calzone, Pasta Combos, Linguine with White or Red Clam Sauce, Chicken Marsala, Veal Parmigiana, the list goes on and on. All of the ingredients they use, are the finest, freshest, hand selected that they can find in our area. Many of the ingredients are imported from Italy. Fil’s Mother, given a little advance notice, will even prepare one of your own family recipes if you don’t find it on their menu. She will accommodate almost every request if you have the recipe or can give her a description of what it is you desire. They have a variety of homemade desserts that are wonderful too. Tiramisu, Cannoli, Italian Rum Cake, New York Style Cheesecake are all delightful. They serve Coffee, Tea, Sodas, Beer and Wine for your personal enjoyment. Everything is available for takeout or dine in or even get free delivery. Catering is available for any occasion, large or small. Fil’s also gives back to the community. Twice a month, every other Monday, they have a fund raiser for the Rebecca Schneider Foundation. This month they have a baked Ziti dinner with salad and garlic bread for $7.99 and the purchase of a drink. 10% of the proceeds goes to the foundation. The next dates are August 5th & 19th for the fund raiser. Fil’s is a dining delight and should be a regular stop on your dining out plans. This months bartender we love is none other than Selina Neeser of Port Orange Steak House. She is originally from Massachusetts and moved to Florida in 2000. The driving force to move here, was her love of the beach and the warm weather she enjoys so much. She has been tending bar since she literally turned 18. Around the time of her 18th birthday, one day at work, they handed her a mixology book and said, “ Here you go ! “ She has been tending bar since. She has been at the Port Orange Steakhouse for 5 years and loves her co-workers. Her favorite part of her job, is her love of conversation, meeting people and of course the money. Outside of work, she loves spending time at the beach with her son, the love of her life. One of her favorite drinks to serve is the Pomegranate Margarita. Here is how you can try one at home. Start with a tin shaker full of ice and a salt rimmed 8 oz. Margarita glass. Add to the shaker 3/4 oz. of Pomegranate Liquor, 1 1/4 oz. of Tequila, 4 oz. of sour mix. add a lime slice for garnish. Shake well, pour and enjoy. Don’t have the time or ingredients ? Visit Selina and have her make you one. Also, once there, you can enjoy the best steaks and ribs in town. Bella Voci repertoire will be showcasing highlights from recent Volusia county performances of Urinetown and upcoming shows like Les Miserables and Songs for a New World. From a comic “Therapy” session to a steamy “Cabaret” nightclub, Bella Voci is sure to capture the attention of any theater-go-er. Looking for an even more grand night? This group will have you singing and swaying to their European sounds of the Opera. Presenting popular tunes like “Arrivederci” and the French sounds of Carmen’s “Habanera,” these foreign language performances will have you transported to the streets of Europe.

The musician in Bella Voci have worked together in several different singing ensembles performing throughout Central Florida for the last several years. With encouragement from the owner of Luna Bella Ristorante (where they had performed in the past with a different ensemble) the group decided to create their own musical entertainment group. Directed by the talented Cynthia Hansen, this eclectic group comprised of an orthodontist, marketing manager, lawyer, and teacher, are no strangers to the stage. Dr. David Lowe, has played an impressive array of characters onstage this past year from shows like, Urinetown, Jake’s Women, and South Pacific, to name a few. Alexa Baldwin has had her fair share of time on stage in many of the same shows as well in theater favorite like Grease and Little Shop of Horrors, and My Fair Lady. Joined by her husband Robert Baldwin, another thespian, who directs the Transylvanian Mania at the Athens Theater’s Rocky Horror Picture Show, and appeared in shows including Grease, Guys and Dolls, and Urinetown. Rounding out the group is the ensemble’s youngest member, Bernadette Siudock, who has shared the stage with all of her members in shows such as The Drowsy Chaperone and South Pacific.

Azteca D’ Oro is a wonderful, authentic Mexican restaurant located in the Publix Plaza on SR. 44. The food is terrific, the atmosphere is warm and inviting. They are relatively new to our area, but well known throughout the Northwest. Four brothers and their families started from a 24 seat restaurant in Burien, Washington in 1974 to a collection of 35 Azteca Mexican Restaurants, established by 2001, Azteca Mexican Restaurants now employ more than 1,400 people, and serve over 400,000 customers each month. Stretching from Everett, Washington, in the north, to Ashland, Oregon in the south, to Kennewick and Spokane, Washington in the East, and eventually even further to Azteca Real in Davie, Azteca D’Oro in New Smyrna Beach and Orlando, Florida. Azteca continues to grow from a small “mom and pop” restaurant to a major corporation in the Pacific Northwest and Florida. Daytona Beach Shores is home to a new Italian Bistro called Tufo’s Italian Seafood and Steaks. Owner and Chef, Sam Tufo has created this lovely Bistro with a delightful atmosphere and delicious entrees. Sam’s extensive restaurant experience started with the family restaurant in upstate New York when he was a child. He, his parents and 4 siblings all grew up in Tufo’s Restaurant that later became Benny’s Steakhouse. Lots of hard work and fond memories make Sam who he is today. Sam opened his very first restaurant back in the 70’s. Most recently, he was the previous owner of Cranes Roost Golf Club Restaurant. Sam wanted to bring back his family’s heritage by starting a new Tufo’s restaurant. June 19th of this year, he opened Tufo’s Bistro. Many Italian treats are on his menu. He has favorites like stuffed peppers. baked lasagna, chicken or eggplant parmigiana, baked ziti and many more pastas. He features fine seafood and choice steaks. You can even have Prime Rib on Saturdays. Everything on his menu and in house sauces and dressings are made from scratch using the finest ingredients available and of course a lot of love.
